Powerful/sleek laptop, with gorgeous OLED screen!

Before I give you the lowdown on this Dell XPS, I just want to say what I’ve been saying for years: “why can’t PC manufacturers make a laptop as beautiful and sleek as MacBook?”! This Dell XPS is the nicest Windows laptop I’ve seen in a long time! From every angle, it is clean, nice design that rivals the MacBook’s!
The unboxing experience was quite nice, the box it was in looks like a gift box, everything is laid out very nicely inside. Because the XPS has only Thunderbolt and USB-C ports (3 of them), a USB-C dongle was included, this adds 1 standard USB and 1 HDMI port. It’s a cleverly designed dongle I might add. Included is a 130W USB-C charger in matching white. Once unboxed and unwrapped, you’ll notice the beautiful, clean, minimalistic design. A simple Dell logo on front, and a few ports (2 thunderbolt ports, a gen 2 USB-C, headphone jack, SD slot, and locking port) on the edge and not much more. In the front center of the laptop, in front of where the mouse is, there is a white LED light to let you know how much battery is left, a nice touch. The back edge of the laptop is very clean; no obvious hinge lines are visible. Once opened, the laptop is all white with a beautiful matt carbon fiber look to it. The keyboard is roomy; I have no problem typing on this laptop all day. The touchpad is oversized as well, measuring 6” wide by 3.5 deep”! The best part of this laptop, the beautiful OLED screen with the thinnest bezel (approx. 1/8” thin border) I’ve seen!
Performance and functionality:
I like that this laptop has both Windows Hello facial unlocking technology as well as a fingerprint reader. All the other laptops I have in the house has one or the other. The power button on the upper right of the keyboard doubles as a power button and fingerprint reader. I’m not a big fan of the placement of that power button, I’m used to the most upper right hand button the delete key. I feel there are some buttons you don’t move around or add more buttons next to it, the ESC is always upper left, CTRL is lower left and the Delete key should always be on the upper right. Aside from that, the keyboard is pretty much standard Dell, you have function buttons that do 2 jobs, volume settings, brightness etc. The time it takes to bootup is very fast, I was up and running in 14 seconds!
I installed MS-Office and a stock trading software that includes with streaming videos, performance was excellent, as I expected. It’s very quiet overall, I don’t even hear the fan going on. I also installed a few games including F1 2020 and Valorant; both games ran very smoothly and without a hitch. The colors on the OLED screen were bright and vibrant, it made the F1 cars look much nicer than it did on my other monitor and laptop. This screen has spoiled me! The colors on my other monitor and laptop seemed muted in comparison.
Quirks I noticed while testing the laptops:
On 2 occasions, the laptop froze on me. One time, I removed the power and the USB-C going to an external monitor, I got a blue screen and it was collecting diagnostic information except it didn’t get off 0%, I had to hold down the power button to force reboot. It froze again later in the evening as well. But since then, it seems to be okay. I also found the touchpad a little finicky. I would try to scroll up on a webpage using 2 fingers, it kept going into “Multitasking view”, which should’ve required 3 fingers with a scrolling upwards motion; this happened several times.
Conclusion:
While this laptop is on the higher end of the price spectrum, you get your bang for the buck. The InfinityEdge and OLED screen are my favorite features, if I had to pick only 2. It’s absolutely gorgeous and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a powerful computer! If you don’t want to spend so much, look for the same XPS 15” without the OLED screen.

Don’t ever worry about leaks or floods in your basement, under your sinks, from your water heater and anywhere else around the house. Phyn Smart Water Sensors alert you audibly, visually and with SMS and app notifications to your phone the moment they detect water. Set your own alert thresholds for potentially damaging high and low humidity in the free Phyn app and customize settings to maximize battery life. Easily connects via Wi-Fi to your home network, no hubs necessary. Batteries included.

Leak detector+temp+humidity levels!
on June 20, 2021

I’ve been looking for a device to monitor a few places in my home where I feel water may potentially leak: the hot water heater (14 yrs old) room and another closet where I have a water filter and softener installed. Many of the water sensor’s I’ve seen on amazon seem to be no name brand from overseas. I’m a bit wary about installing these apps on my phone and allowing them to access my wifi, security can be lacking or even provide a backdoor to foreign companies. These PHYN sensors seem to be made by a reputable company. They have other products as well including a device that can detect water usage and shut off the main valve if needed!
The PHYN water sensors are fairly small, about the size of a hockey puck. Setup was very easy, simply unscrew the base in insert 2 of the included AA batteries. There’s a rubber gasket around the bottom of the device to seal out water. On the base cover, there’s a hole in case you want to hang the sensor, not sure where this would be useful though. The app walks you through the setup process, it’s fairly simple, although the QR code setup method did not work for me. Neither did the entering in the code on the device. I had to resort to connecting the device wifi and setting up that way.
Once connected, I placed the devices in my basement. I didn’t realize these would also read the temperature and humidity levels, it’s like 3 devices in 1! The humidity measurement is important to me, since I’m using the basement as a home office. The readings aren’t real time though, seems to be hourly readings; I’m guessing have the sensors update more often will shorten battery life. As far as sensing water, they work great! I licked my fingers and connected the contacts on the bottom of the device and it sensed the moisture and sent me a text message right away. I’m not sure how accurate the humidity readings are. Its readings are consistently higher than a device I have that reads the temp and humidity levels. Right now after it refreshed, I checked the temp and humidity levels on my digital thermometer/humidity gauge, Dyson app readings and the PHYN sensor. The humidity readings were not very consistent with the 3 devices; I believe the PHYN is reading higher than it really is.
ThermoPro Digital gauge: 72.7 temp/60% humidity
Dyson: 75 temp/54% humidity
PHYN: 72 temp/68% humidity
Even with the variance in humidity readings, I would still recommend these to anyone that is looking for some peace of mind when it comes to water leaks. They’re reasonably priced, the app is very straightforward and easy to understand.

Nice laptop, great features & thin, clean design

The Dell Inspiron 14 arrived in a nondescript cardboard box, not much of an unboxing experience. Included in the box is the laptop, a charger (USB-C) and a plug to go with the charger. Once opened, I was pleasantly surprised with a laptop that is very nicely designed fairly thin, clean and sleek. The top lid is an attractive metallic dark blue color while the lower half is a dark metallic gray color. I’m not sure if I like the two tone color scheme. I think it would look nicer if it were all blue.
Setup was very straight forward, as with other Windows devices, you simply log in with your Microsoft login and your settings are applied. I like that the camera has a privacy shutter (albeit with a tiny metal slider button that doesn’t slide easily) that you can actually see when it’s activated. I have a work laptop that has a privacy shutter also, but it’s not as obvious when its activated. In addition to the 2 USB 3.2 and 1 USB-C ports, there is a HDMI port! On my 2 other laptops (1-3 years old), they don’t have HDMI ports, so if I wanted to put something on the TV, I need to use a USB-C adapter. There is also a Micro SD slot for your photos. The keyboard is backlit with a high and low setting. While we’re on the keyboard, the function keys do double duty as F1-F12 as well as computer settings (volume, keyboard lighting etc). You toggle between function keys and setting keys by pressing fn+esc buttons to lock the function keys or setting keys. But there’s no indicator to tell you which selection you’re on. On my other laptops, there is either a LED that turns on to let you know that the function keys are active, or you hold the fn key and the setting key to activate. Minor pet peeve I suppose.
Using the laptop is a very pleasant experience, the keyboard is nicely laid out and a good size. The power button, on the upper right of the keyboard, doubles as a fingerprint reader to log into Windows, definitely a nice feature! I was a bit surprised that facial recognition unlock isn’t available on this laptop though. The 2 in 1 feature is nice, but I don’t usually use the laptop as a tablet, I find it too heavy. I downloaded a trading application I use use daily and it installed and ran very quickly. I also installed Microsoft Office and used Excel and Word with no issues. This laptop should be able to handle all my everyday tasks with ease.
Dell Mobile Connect: As an iPhone and iMessage user, I usually have my phone nearby to read or send messages. With Dell Mobile Connect, it allows me to send and receive iMessages and text messages, in addition, I get all the notifications on my phone. It tried to mirror my phone basically. It seems to do this somewhat successfully. I can send and receive messages, it won’t however, copy all your current messages on your phone to the app. When I rebooted the PC, the conversations I had started on the PC went away (they’re still on my iPhone). I should also be able access my photos and videos from this app also, but I wasn’t having any luck. Both my laptop and iPhone are on the same wifi; the instructions on the screenovate web site shows that in the Dell Mobile access app, I need to have a setting “allow local network access” toggled in the ON position. On my phone, that setting isn’t even available (see photos uploaded). It seems the Dell Mobile Connect app needs some work, but it’s a good attempt to bridge the gap between your mobile device and PC.
Alexa came pre-installed with the laptop, this is great, as I have many Alexa products, but don’t have an Alexa speaker near my office where I will be using the laptop. With the Alexa app, I can have Alexa turn on lights, control the thermostat, etc as if I had a speaker nearby! But this isn’t unique to this Dell laptop, I was able to download the Alexa PC app on my other Windows laptop as well.
Overview:
This is a great little laptop for anyone looking for a laptop for work or school. The minimal design, features and processor speed makes it a great choice and I would highly recommend it. I did have a few “cons” on my list, but they’re minor issues, not deal breakers. I look forward to using this Dell laptop on a daily basis in my home office!
Pros:
1. fingerprint reader
2. Nice, clean design
3. Dell Mobile
4. Mechanical privacy shutter (that you can see when it’s on/off)
5. Light up keyboard
6. Alexa
Cons:
1. Can’t unlock using face
2. 2 tone color scheme
3. No LED to indicate whether function keys are on or not
4. Privacy shutter difficult to slide

Solid gaming monitor for budget conscience!

The Asus VG246 is a 23.8” Freesync monitor that is nicely designed with a thin bezel on 3 sides, the bottom part is a bit wider as that’s where the controls are. This monitor is full HD (1920x1080), 1 ms response time and 75Hz refresh rate. Out of the box, the setup is very simple, includes a stand and a plate to mount to. The base stand can swivel 360 degrees, can be raised up or down, and is also capable of tilting. It can also be VESA-mounted. I chose to mount it on my desk mount that I already had with my previous monitor (non-gaming).
The monitor’s setup is simple, coming with a power cable and an HDMI cable. There is a headphone/audio driver, which I found strange, and my system kept asking to switch to it. There are two inputs, an HDMI and VGA.
This monitor has a 75hz refresh rate, and very low motion blur. The display is sharp and the video is smooth, I tested it for several days with Valorant and Star Wars Battlefront. This is much better than the monitor I was using before. However, the colors are a little too muted for me, but I was able to fix that by changing the color settings on the graphics card Control Panel.
Some of the features that I liked about this monitor is the video quality, the dark colors and the size is perfect for me. Some things I don’t like are the audio jack input, the fact that there is only one HDMI input, and the default color settings. Overall, this is a great choice if you’re on a budget and looking for a monitor in this size range.

Excellent all around monitor, nice curved design!

As with many people, I’ve been working from home since the start of the pandemic. I’ve been looking to upgrade to a larger monitor to accommodate my needs which primarily includes spreadsheets, trading software (a lot of graphs), some photo editing in Lightroom and maybe an occasional game with the kids. I also use both a Mac and a PC, so ideally, if I can split the screen and run 2 different laptops, that would be great!
The Samsung A650 monitor was surprisingly simple to setup. All I had to do was screw in 1 screw on the base plate into the vertical mount. From there, the monitor clipped onto the arm very easily. The monitor is height adjustable as well as left and right pivot. The bezel surrounding the monitor is fairly thin and clean looking.
In the back are 3 video connections: HDMI, USB-C and display port (HDMI and USB-C cables are included). The USB-C also puts out 90W, so not only will this be an input to the monitor, it will also charge your laptop! It’s always nice to reduce additional cables! The monitor also serves as a hub, there are 3 USB ports, a network connection and a headphone jack. It’s a nice feature to have, again, to keep the wire clutter to a minimum.
I was able to connect my laptop to the monitor using the USB-C cable. Note, make sure you don’t have any dongles or adapters, the USB-C or HDMI should plug in directly to your laptop. Initially, I had a USB-C adapter in between my laptop and monitor, I wasn’t getting the resolution and refresh rate topped out at 24hz. Once connected properly, the monitor looks beautiful! The curved shape of the monitor is very nice looking, I can see all the charts and graphs without turning my head back and forth as much. I was able to connect my Mac to the HDMI cable as well, using the menu, I split the screen in half. So now I can use the Mac for LIghtroom, imessages and email and the PC for my charting software and spreadsheets.
Overall, there’s a lot I like about this monitor, the USB hub, network connection, 90W USB-C are great features. I found the image quality to be excellent for everything I used it for. I wish there was a KVM switch built in so I can use the same mouse and keyboard with both laptops. Not a deal breaker as I can easily add a KVM switch or purchase a keyboard and mouse that can switch between 2 computers. I would also have liked to see software that automatically tiles open applications to the monitor. Even without these 2 features, the Samsung 34” curve is an excellent choice for anyone looking to get a larger screen!

Innovative floor cleaning device, like no other!
on March 23, 2021
Posted by: Gizmo
from New Jersey
This Dyson Omni-Glide hard surface vacuum could not have come at a better time! I’ve been looking for a vacuum for my hardwood and tiled floors. Although I already have a Dyson, Animal, I don’t have a good hard surface floor brush for it.
The first thing I noticed about the Omni-Glide vacuum is that its very lightweight. It weighs approximately 5lbs with the roller brush, for comparison, the Animal V11 weights almost 7lbs. The Omni-glide comes with 2 attachments, a unique “omni-directional soft roller” and a cleverly designed combo crevice tool with brush. The charger is fairly small as well, it is connected to an equally small wall mount. Unlike other Dyson vacuums, it doesn’t appear like the charge cord can be removed from the wall mount.
The omni-directional soft roller tool is unlike any vacuum head I’ve used before; it is very maneuverable! It’s power head spins towards the suction hole to capture dust and dirt and sends it into the vacuum. The rollers are, as you would guess, very soft. So perfectly safe for your hardwood floors or any delicate surface. My family tends to use the Animal with power heard to vacuum the hard surfaces and it makes a rather loud sound, the Omni-Glide doesn’t do that. The omni-glide head can get to all the hard to reach places other vacuums cant, close to the walls, next to the toe kick of kitchen cabinets, I was even able to vacuum under the pedals of the piano (2.75” clearance), the omni-glide head is only 1.75” tall.
After 5 mins walking around my house, the canister was already ½ full! I didn’t think my floors were so dusty, but I guess I was wrong. With a press of a button, the omni-glide head easily comes apart for cleaning. There is also a replaceable filter inside, it traps 99.99% of particles! This will be helpful for my seasonal allergies. I tried this in the basement, where I just finished putting up some drywall and plaster a few weeks ago. Although the floors had already been cleaned, after walking around a few minutes with the Omni-glide, the dirt trapped inside the canister was white plaster dust, very find dust.

Overall, I love this little vacuum, it’s better than any vacuums I’ve looked into purchasing. The promised run time of 20 minutes is adequate, it’s a good compromise for a lighter device. In my tests, it lasted around 18-24 minutes. Growing up, I remember my parents had this broom with a foam sweeping surface. It was good because the foam picked up dust like no other broom could. This vacuum is a 2021 version of that!
Pros:
Vacuums close to walls, cabinets, under sofas etc, very maneuverable.
Cons: None.

Excellent sound quality in a small package!

Denon Home 350
When the box was delivered, I thought it was a rather large box for the speaker. This speaker is much larger (and heavier) than I expected it to be! The speaker measures 15” wide, 7” deep, stands 9” tall and weighs 15lbs! The speaker was very easy to setup, I setup a HEOS account and logged in.
Music sources:
I think Denon added every source of music one can think of, in addition to WiFi, there is an Ethernet port, for those that prefer hardwiring to LAN. There is also a USB port in case you want to stream music from a USB drive. As far as steaming services, there are many sources of music to choose from, popular services such as Pandora, Spotify, Tune-in, Amazon to name a few. I was surprised Apple music was not on the list of services. While you can simply stream Apple music via Airplay 2 to get around this, you can’t setup as a quick select channel. The one source that I was happy to see is “Music Server”, if you have a NAS or a folder on your computer, you can set this up so that it streams from it! A few years back, I spent days ripping all my CD’s to my Synology, all the music showed up and played flawlessly on the Denon speaker! This is indeed my favorite feature of this device!
Sound quality:
To test, I signed up for a Deezer high fidelity account. I was blown away by the sound this device puts out! I expect this sound quality from a large stereo system. Its capable of much more then I had the volume turned up to. I had to move the Home 350 to my basement so I won’t disturb the wife and kids as I crank this baby up! In my finished basement, I have it setup in the main room which measures 30’x17’, this speaker has no problem filling the room! With the volume set half way at #51, it’s very loud. Not only is it loud, but the highs are crisp and clear, while the bass levels are deep. There are some adjustments in the HEOS app if you want to tune the sound. Under settings, My Devices, EQ, you can adjust the treble and bass. I played all types of music, Greatest Showman soundtrack, Queen, Imagine Dragons, the sound quality is phenomenal! I have other very good speakers in the house that I like a lot also, but this Denon sets a new standard!
Functionality:
The top of the speaker has hidden touch control buttons that light up when you approach and put your hands near it, very nice touch. These allow you to use the Qucik Select buttons, control the volume, and play/pause your music (holding the play pause button for 5 seconds will also put the Denon into deep sleep mode. Initially, I found the light turns off rather quickly, sometimes before I selected what I was trying to select. I was able to fix this in the app, there are settings for brightness and how long the touch control stays on for. On one occasion, I wasn’t able to wake the speaker up from deep sleep via the app, I had to walk over and press one of the buttons. Hopefully this was a one-time glitch.
I like that it has quick select buttons you can program to your music service. You do this by playing your selected streaming service. For example, I have a “Piano Guys” station setup on Pandora, while it’s playing, I simply press and hold the Quick select number I want to program until the LED flashes once. This is great, because if another family member wants to use the speaker, they can simply press the Quick select number.
Conclusion:
After testing the Denon Home 350 for the past 3 days, I’ve gotten quite attached to this speaker. I look forward to working in the basement and turning up the speaker with my favorite music! Design wise, it’s nice, but a bit on the conservative side. Anyone looking for great sound to fill a large room in a small package should take a look at the Home 350.

Nice looking purifier and works well!
on January 17, 2021
Posted by: Gizmo
from New Jersey
Standing at almost 34” tall, the BlueAir 7770i is a fairly large device. Setup was simple, download the app, follow the steps to add your device and you’re in business. I found this air purifier to be very quiet on the lowest setting, on it’s highest setting, you can hear the fan, but the noise level is acceptable.
I ran 2 tests, first, I placed it in my large kitchen/dining area.  We have the unit set to “Automatic” and it is on 24/7. When I cook or shortly after I’m done cooking, the Health Protect automatically senses higher amounts of particles/pollutants and turns up the setting and the LED bar that is normally blue to indicate low pollutants, turns yellow, to give you a visual indicator, which I like.  In the BlueAir app, in addition to being able to control the air filter speed, it gives you an air quality chart as well as history, you can go back days, week or even months. In my second test, I placed the Health Protect in the basement, where I was doing a bit of sanding and painting. After I painted a nearby wall with latex paint, again, the LED turned from blue to green, I also noticed the chart on the app spiked up. Then I did a bit of sanding about 10’ away. Minutes later, the LED light turned yellow and the chart on the app spiked up more.

When researching which air purifier to purchase, the most important factor is CADR (clean air delivery rate). CADR reflects the volume of clean air that an air purifier can produce at its highest speed setting. The higher the CADR, the faster and more efficient the air purifier is. A CADR above 280 is considered excellent by Consumer Reports. The CADR for this Blue Air filter is 435 cfm for pollen and smoke. Over 400 for dust. Unfortunately, I cannot test this for pollen as it is winter where I am. I suffered from seasonal allergies, I hope this filter will alleviate that.
Overall, I am very impressed by this air purifier, I was a bit skeptical initially. But after the 2 tests I ran, it proves that the HealthProtect is working and doing its job. It actually knows when the air is bad. I will be purchasing an additional unit for my bedroom.

Cute USB-C adapter in nice form factor

If you’re working from home on your dining room table like I am, this adapter might come in handy. It was perfect for my needs, I plug in all my peripherals and monitor into this hub so I don’t have to plug everything into my laptop. If I need to take my laptop somewhere, I just unplug the USB-C cable.
The design of this 6 in 1 adapter is round, it’s a nice looking form factor – it basically resembles a hockey puck. I like that the USB-C cable rewinds back into the adapter and tucks away neatly by simply twisting the bottom half. The adapter includes the following ports:
1. Ethernet
2. HDMI
3. DP (display port)
4. USB-C
5. USB-A
6. VGA
After using this for a few days, here are my thoughts on the Dell 6 in 1 adapter. First off, it’s 2021, do we really still need a VGA adapter? That space could’ve been utilized for something else, an extra USB to charge your phone perhaps. With this adapter, it gives my laptop an ethernet port which it doesn’t have.
The adapter does everything it promises; I can connect several devices to it and unplug 1 cable to disconnect it all. Here’s where the design doesn’t work so well, with a few devices plugged in, it looks like an octopus with a wire extending in every direction! Comparing this to another USB hub I happen to own, the cables line up better with a straight design. Not a deal breaker, just something to consider. One other feature I wished it had is “power delivery” via USB-C. This feature would charge your laptop if you plug in a USB-C power supply into this adapter and then plug it into your laptop. This adapter won’t do that.
Overall, Dell has made a nice little USB-C adapter that will fulfill the needs for many. Easy to stow in your laptop bag, and nice to look at. A bit on the pricy side for what you get though.

Excellent wireless charger, new and improved!

The Belkin Boost promises to charge at 15W, compared to the current Belkin I have, Boost Charge 10W. Appearance wise, they look very similar, the new 15W charger is slightly thicker and has a sturdier look to it. The charger comes with a USB-C cable and charging block.
On the inside of my cell phone case, I have a metal disc used to mount my phone magnetically to my car mount. With the 10W charger, I always had a difficult time finding the right spot to get it to charge. I found the new 15W charger to be much more “forgiving” in that sense. Every time I put the phone down, the white light would appear and it would charge properly! I was very surprised! While I don’t have an iphone 12 to take advantage of the 15W charging, it does seem to charge quicker than my 10W charger. I then tried charging my AirPod Pro’s wirelessly, I have a Native Union leather case over the Airpods, it seemed to have a difficult time charging, I moved it around until the light came one, a but off center near the USB-C cable seems to be the sweet spot for the Airpods. Without a case, it wasn’t an issue at all.
If you’re looking for a Qi charger, I’d recommend you taking a look at the Belkin. I found the new 15W charger to be much better than the 10W version. The only con is the USB block it came with, it sticks out of the wall about 2”, I wanted to place this charger on my dresser, but I can’t since the plug is behind the wall.
