A simple surge strip that does the job.
on November 17, 2023
Posted by: Gizmo
This is a simple, 6 outlet surge protector that I needed for my standing desk. It’s constructed out of plastic, there are 2 smallish holes on the back for mounting. It would be nice if it had the tabs on the top and bottom to make it easier to mount, but not everyone needs those. Here’s a quick tip if you’re looking to mount this on a desk or wall, tape a piece of masking tape, tape it on the back of this surge strip, then punch holes in the tape where the holes are. Take tape off and tape on to the desk or wall and voila, you’ll have the proper spacing to mount!
Features:
I appreciate the flat wall plug in case I need to put it behind a piece of furniture. While it doesn’t have many extras (no USB-A or USB-C outlets), it is UL listed which I prefer. Many surge strips I’ve seen has ETL protection, which is probably fine, if I can pick between the 2, I prefer to get products UL listed.
The protection of 1,080 joules should suffice for my needs (laptop, monitor and phone chargers). If you plan on using this for home theater equipment, TV consider a surge protector with a higher joule rating.
If you’re looking for a surge strip that’s UL listed and fairly inexpensive, this is a good product. If you want a fancy surge strip for your high end stereo equipment or a surge protector with USB charging ports for your portable devices, look elsewhere. This is a plain and simple device.

Love the nostalgia, but can’t get a decent photo!
on November 12, 2023
Posted by: Gizmo
This is now my second Polaroid camera, my previous one being the Polaroid Now +. From using the Now +, I didn’t have high expectations of this camera, since the former rarely yielded decent photos. I get that film photography is not meant to be perfect, but the pictures I got from these cameras were barely recognizable, often not bright enough, or too overexposed. It should be easy, just take out the camera and shoot, right? I would think the camera would automatically adjust the exposure, but I can never seem to get a good looking shot. Compared to something like the Fujifilm mini cameras, they do a much better job at capturing accurate pictures. I’ve taken pictures in good indoor light, or if there was not enough light, I used the flash. However, the pictures either come out too dark or too bright. Perhaps it takes a little more practice to get used to the camera, but with how expensive the film is, I’m almost apprehensive when taking photos. In my opinion, fujifilm is a much better choice for amateurs looking for a good point and shoot. The film is less expensive, and the pictures come out looking much better.

Perfect keyboard, didn't find any "cons"!
on October 30, 2023
Posted by: Gizmo
My first impressions of this keyboard out of the box, it’s a great looking keyboard, the white looks really nice, I think it looks better in person vs. the photos. It feels really solid, when typing, no rattles or anything. The top plate is aluminum while the sides and bottom are plastic. I found the size to be perfect, not too large but not small either (approximately 12W”x6”D).
Setting up the keyboard was simple, as soon as I plugged in the USB-A connector, a prompt to install the Razer software came up, within a few minutes, software was installed and I was ready to start customizing my keyboard! The wrist rest snaps onto the keyboard magnetically, it’s a good size and the material is soft. It puts my hands in a comfortable typing position, without the wrist rest, the keyboard feels uncomfortably high. You can flip out the legs to make the keyboard higher, there are two different levels to choose from. Without having them up, the keyboard is still at a slight angle.
The keyboard is highly customizable with the lighting and keys controls. I can customize each individual key by brightness, function, text function, etc. This is actually my first gaming keyboard. While I don’t game as often as I’d like, I can see how being able to customize the keys would be very helpful. You can even use the Hypershift feature to have a program start up. Just for kicks, in the Synapse program, I customize certain letters to open the Office applications I normally use. To use the shortcut, press the “Hypershift” key, which is “fn” to the right of the space bar, and your shortcut key. I was able to create shortcuts to launch Excel, Word etc. Such a great feature, so convenient. But all this is just the tip of the iceberg of what the keyboard can do. The lighting effects can range from a simple single color to various patterns such as “breathing” or “fire” patterns, on all keys, or some keys. As a beginner, it’s almost overwhelming amount of customizations you can do. I’m sure with time, I’ll figure it out, just my productivity will suffer in the short term. I appreciate the flexibility of the hot swappable keys design, most likely, I’ll be sticking with these keys.
There is so much to like about this keyboard. Here are a few reasons:
It feels great typing and I love how the orange switches sound and feel, not too loud and just the right amount of feedback. I appreciate how solid the keyboard feels, it’s not a heavy keyboard, yet, it feels like it’s stuck to my table and won’t move or bounce around like cheap keyboards may. The volume scroll wheel is very convenient, they should have this on all keyboards! This is so much better than the keyboards that come with the PC’s, I know it’s not a valid comparison, but that’s what I use 50% of the time, the other 50% is laptop keyboards. While the price point may be high, it’s in the same ballpark as other gaming keyboards with these comparable features. Furthermore, the design of the keyboard is sleek and clean. The white color gives the keyboard a sophisticated look. As I use this keyboard more, the more I like it. I actually ordered this for my daughter, she may have a hard time getting it from me!

Great multipurpose kitchen appliance, powerful!
on October 19, 2023
Posted by: Gizmo
It’s great when an appliance can do more than 1 job, thereby saving space. But as I recently learned with a new stove that has a built-in air fryer in the oven, sometimes it doesn’t live up to the hype. With the Ninja Blender and Food Processor Duo, having the versatility of both a blender and a food processor in one unit is a huge plus. Included are 2 containers: a 72 oz pitcher and a 64 oz bowl for the food processor, 2 chopping blades, a dough blade, and a shredding disc. Also included is a 24oz to go cup with it’s own blade, so you can make drinks on the go!
The blender has BlendSense technology, it’s like AI for a blender, it can automatically detect and adjust speed and blending time. A big reason I got this blender is for my teenage son, he LOVES smoothies! He makes one pretty much every day and has gotten very proficient at making them. He uses frozen fruits, usually mangos and strawberries and fresh banana.
I thought it would be interesting to see how the Ninja stacks up against the pro style blender we currently have, a 12 year old Vitamix. Over the course of the week, we made 3 smoothies with various frozen fruits, unfortunately, the results were not that great. The ingredients tend to stuck to the side of the blender jar. We had to take the jar off, shake it up, push it down with a spatula or thinning out a bit with more water (the “add water” light did not come on”). After 3 presses of the Blendsense button and more shaking, it blended smoothly. I love the light show you get with the dial while the blender is working, irreverent? Yes, but its’s still cool!
Next test, we used the food processor and the dough hook to make pizza dough. It worked fine, mixed all the ingredients in “dough” mode. A feature we liked when making dough is the lid with the rubber gasket, you don’t get flower dusting all over when mixing. The suction cups held the processer in place when the dough was being mixed. The worse part of this was the cleanup, sticky dough to wash out of the dough blade and processor bowl vs a stand mixer and dough hook we would normally use. Using the food processor with the shredding disc was great, it made chopping up vegetables was a breeze. The dual sided disc is a neat feature, so smart!
Overall, the Ninja Blender and Food Processor Duo is a fantastic addition to any kitchen. It would’ve been nice if the recipe book had more recipes to try, although scones are mentioned, no recipes were included. It might have a minor quirk with some ingredients sticking to the side in the blender, but it's a small price to pay for the convenience and performance it offers. I recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and multifunctional kitchen appliance.

Great hardware+excellent, easy to use app!
on October 10, 2023
Posted by: Gizmo
The Theragun Sense percussion massager is different from other massagers I’ve used in the past. First, this is a percussion massager, it uses rapid and repetitive pressure and vibration therapy to massage you. A bit different from the shiatsu type massager I have in the house. The Theragun Sense takes it a step further as it includes an appt that walks you through different massage routines and even includes guided breathwork exercises to reduce stress to help with sleep.
Setup:
Setup takes no time, simply download the app, connect to your phone’s Bluetooth. In the app, you’ll have to answer a few basic questions including your wellness goals and activities. You’ll also need to add the Theragun Sense to your devices. Charge the device using the included USB-C cable and you’re ready to get started! Included are 4 different massage heads, the app will tell you which head to use. Notice the biometric scanner under the handle, where your index finger would be. The included zippered soft case is a nice touch.
Using the app:
The app has many different massage routines, there are routines for pre workout, post workout, recovery, upper body, lower body, you name it, there is a massage tutorial for you! There are even massage tutorials for someone that sits at a desk all day, as well as sleep prep routines. I was pleasantly surprised by all the different tutorials available, it’s like a Peloton app just for massages! I found this to be very helpful. With my old school massager, I would simply massage the normal body parts that ache or are sore. I would never think to use a massager to warm up or for desk relief! I like how the app shows you photos of the body part and starts a timer. The triangle shape of the Sense makes it easy to grip, no matter the muscle you are trying to reach.

Relaxation and Breathwork:
Currently there are 4 routines for relaxation and breathwork. The routine instructs you to grip the Sense with both hands, the biometric sensor will be activated to take your heartrate. Keep in mind the heartrate won’t show up while you’re in the routine, it’ll show at the end. While in this routine, your phone will play various relaxing music “Theramind”. While it’s a nice option to have and some may find it useful, I didn’t find it that useful as I have a smart watch to track my heartrate and subscribe to 2 fitness streaming services that includes meditation type workouts. Keep in mind the Sense routines only play relaxing music, there are no spoken words.
Conclusion:
The Theragun Sense itself is a great massager, it feels sturdy in my hand, the output from the massage head feels and the device itself seems well made. Combined with the Therabody app that guides you through a massage for your specific workout and you have a winning combination! While the app has an almost overwhelming amount of information, it’s laid out in a logical, easy to understand format. I thought the relaxation and breathwork aspect of it seems a bit gimmicky, hopefully it will be improved upon.
Pros:
- Guided massage routines – a game changer, perfect for those without imagination like me
- Triangle shaped handle allows for multiple ways to hold Theragun Sense
- Sturdy, well-made hardware
Cons:
- A workout called “Move and breathe with Julianne Hough” – I thought it would be a massage routine that Julianne talk through, but there was no audio, nothing to do with Julianne aside from description.

Perfectly sized USB-C charger!
on October 10, 2023
Posted by: Gizmo
When it comes to phones, tablets, and maybe even laptops, we are at a period of transition. I have a box of wires that contain USB-A to lightning, USB-C to USB-C, USB-C to lightning and USB-A to micro USB. Probably a few other combinations. It can be daunting for some less technically inclined to figure out which to use. I for one, am glad Apple is finally changing to USB-C for all their devices. Since I won’t be upgrading my iPhone, I would have to keep some adapters and USB-C to lightning cables around.
This Insignia charger is a great addition to helping me convert to the USB-C standard. The output of the Insignia charger is up to 30W, my iPad Pro and iPhone 14 was able to charge fairly quickly with this charger. I should mention, watts is calculated simply by multiplying volts to amps. There isn’t a concern of hurting devices with a charger of higher wattage a the phone won’t draw any more power than it’s designed to.
Aside from the wattage output, another great feature with this charger is the size, as the title implies, it is very compact! This charger is not much larger than the original Apple cubes that they used to include with their iPhones. It’s amazing how far technology has come even with something like a charger. The insignia compact charger is also smaller than the Apple USB-C 20W charger that you can purchase. I was able to use this charger and plug into an outlet with another charger, usually I have to pick which I rather charger and remove one. In the photos, I compare this charger to the Apple OEM chargers. I highly recommend this compact USB-C charger. I’ll most likely be ordering more!

Nice design and great sound and noise cancelling!
on September 11, 2023

Technics A800 Headphones
I love using these headphones… the Technics A800 Headphones are very well designed, comfortable to wear for long periods of time, have the battery life to sustain those long periods, they are able to be compacted into a decently sized travel case, and more importantly, they have great sound and noise cancelling.
Audio Quality:
The sound quality is great, very well balanced. Listening to music ranging from hip hop to classical, I could hear voices and instruments very clearly. You can use the sound enhancement feature on the Technics app to produce different sounds effects. (Ex. If you want to increase bass, vocal, or treble, there are different options to do so.)
Noise Cancelling:
The active noise cancellation features are very effective at blocking out unwanted noise. Testing them on a loud bus, I was pretty much deaf to the sounds of people around me. As for the ambient mode, I found that the ‘attention’ mode was not very effective. Voices were not as easy to hear, I preferred to use the transparent mode instead.
Design:
Visually, these headphones look amazing… I love their sleek design. On the other hand, some things I didn’t like were the button design and placement and the cushioning. The control buttons on the right side of the headphones are a little difficult to discern from one another. Without looking, I found it difficult to pick out the pause button from the bunch. After a while, I began to memorize where the buttons were placed, and then it was just a matter of feeling around until I found the button I was looking for. Essentially, you do get used to their positions after using them more. But if the buttons were spaced out and made distinct shapes, they would definitely be easier to access. As for the cushioning, the top headband piece becomes slightly uncomfortable after long periods of use.
Mic: I found that these headphones are great at blocking out unwanted noise while to talking to others. I played some music pretty loud, and my guy on the other end could not really hear it.
Overall, these are a great choice for people looking for headphones with noise cancelling and great audio. Plus, they look great to wear!

The benchmark for soundbars, just buy it!
on August 30, 2023
Posted by: Gizmo
The Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar is a beautifully designed, simple and elegant. The front is the black perforated metal grill, covered on top with a glass (or Plexiglas) cover, it measures about 41” wide. It looks very similar to the Bose Soundbar 900.
Unboxing and setup:
The speaker is fairly heavy, one of the first things I noticed is how solid it felt. Setup was simple, I went with the HDMI ARC. The other option is optical – toslink cable. There is also a wired Ethernet port available. Using the app, I setup mine using WiFi. There is 1 HDMI out port on the Bose, no inputs. I’ve used other sound bar that has HDMI inputs as well, this one does not. This soundbar is not meant to be mounted on the wall, it’s meant to be placed on top of a shelf or entertainment unit. Once the soundbar was plugged in to power and the TV, I was able to use the Bose app to setup the WiFi and add it to my Bose devices. In addition, I enabled Alexa.
The next step was to plug in the headphone like device and have the soundbar calibrate it to my room. This process was very simple, using the app, all I had to do was move to several seating locations, the soundbar would play some sounds to assist with calibrating.
Sound quality:
With setup complete, the first movie I played is the Matrix, specifically the lobby scene! I really enjoyed the sound coming from this soundbar, the sound quality is very crisp and clear. As the empty shell casings were ejected from the guns, you hear the high pitch sound of the empty casing hitting the floor clearly. As I was watching this scene, I heard water seemingly come from the right of where I was sitting. It happened a few times, I thought I had a leak in my house, only to realize it was from the soundbar! It’s amazing that the soundbar is in front of me, but it’s able to project the sound to other areas of the room. Playing the car scene in 6 Underground, the sound quality is excellent, the immersive experience is tough to beat. From the tires squealing to the gun shots fired from all sides, it sounded fantastic!
Next up, I watched my son play Call of Duty for an hour, he liked this soundbar better than the one I had, lets call this soundbar J. The Bose sound is noticeably cleaner, less muddied then soundbar J, which I recently added. The only area soundbar J beats the Bose is the base, and that’s because it has a subwoofer. Add a subwoofer to this Bose soundbar and it’ll be perfect! The Bose is pretty good out of the box w/o a sub, but I would def add a sub to give it those heart pounding lows it truly deserves.
Playing music and music videos on the soundbar, as predicted was also excellent. Having good sound quality makes listening to music so much more enjoyable. I used AirPlay to send audio to the soundbar, it worked flawlessly.
Alexa:
I was able to have Alexa in the soundbar turn off the TV and back on, increase and lower volume, I believe I can change channels also, but I don’t have cable service. There are 2 other Alexa’s nearby from where I’m seated, but I believe the microphone is more sensitive on the soundbar, it picked up while the other 2 did not.
Conclusion:
I am very impressed with this soundbar, the rich, clear audio transforms my basement living room into a mini theater! Bose just raised the bar on subwoofers!

Crucial X10 Pro SSD drive - Compact and Speedy!
on August 29, 2023
Posted by: Gizmo
This little external drive checks off all the boxes for me, it’s fast, holds a lot and is durable. In the past, I’ve used memory sticks (slow) and traditional external drives, this is my first external SSD drive. I was surprised how this drive is! At 2”x2.5”, this is slightly larger than a set of AirPod pros and smaller than a credit card. Not only is it small, but it’s durable. It is rated at IP55 and is water and dust resistant. It’s also drop resistant up to 7.5’, making it much more durable than traditional drives. With traditional drives, I’m always extra careful when handling them as they have moving parts inside that is definitely not drop resistant.
Speed:
One of the standout features of the X10 Pro SSD is its remarkable read and write speeds. The read/write speed of this drive is rated at 2,100/2,000 MB/s! While this sounds really fast, I wasn’t able to get these speeds in my tests. I formatted the drive using ExFAT format so I can use the drive in both my Mac and Windows laptops. Using the USB-C cable that came with the drive, I plugged it into the USB-C ports thunderbolt 4 ports on my Dell XPS 13” laptop. I copied a 71GB video folder to the desktop (the laptop has a NVMe SSD drive as well). I tried both copying and moving the folder to the Crucial X10, the transfer speed fluctuated between 400-550 MB/s and took about 2 mins 18 seconds to complete. While it did not achieve the. 2,100MB/s, it’s still very fast.
I than ran CrystalDiskMark on the drive to see what the software would benchmark the drive at, the results were 1,072.58 for read and 983.63 for write.
Usability:
After copying the video files to the drive, I was able to play the videos directly from the drive with no issues. This can come in handy when you want to play movies directly from a TV, but you may need a USB- to USB-A adapter. I also copied my photo collection (thousands of photos) to the drive and used Lightroom to manage the library. This took a bit longer as I was copying it from a traditional external drive. I love how the Crucial X10 does not required separate power and is so small compared to the old external drive I was using,
In conclusion, the Crucial X10 SSD drive is a compelling option for anyone seeking a blend of speed, durability, and a compact design. Crucial is a brand that I’m familiar with, I’ve purchased RAM upgrades from them in the past. I’ve already recommended this drive to several friends looking for a small backup drive they can leave in a safety deposit box.

Panoramic 3D surround sound without limits. Experience movies, music and games with sound that puts you right in the middle of theaction, thanks to 880W of total output power and thunderous bass from the 10” subwoofer. The JBL Bar 1000 has MultiBeam and four up-firing drivers—two in the bar and two in the detachable battery-powered surround speakers—to envelop you in a sphere of Dolby Atmos and DTS:X 3D surround sound with a wide, spacious soundstage with no need to draw extra cables. You’ll never miss a word with our PureVoice technology, which makes sure the dialogue is clear even when other sounds are at their loudest. When you’re ready for some music, stream your favorite playlist from AirPlay, Alexa Multi-Room Music (MRM), and Chromecast built-in and it’ll feel like the band is right there. The soundbar for rooms w/o space for rear channels
on July 17, 2023
Posted by: Gizmo
When I first learned of this soundbar, I felt it was made exactly for my family room. I like to have surround sound, but the shape of my room doesn’t allow for speaker placement behind the sofa. With the JBL 1000 soundbar, the wireless and battery powered rear channels were perfect for my setup!
Unboxing and setup:
The box is rather large and fairly heavy, this is of course, due to the subwoofer. Included is everything you need to get started including wall mounts, brackets (for soundbar), power cords and even an HDMI cable. Also included are end caps for the soundbar and the detachable speakers. With these end caps, it hides the charging connectors and gives it a nice, polished look. Downlaod the JBL One app to setup the soundbar ony our netowkr. Once this is done, you can AirPlay and login your smart assistants on the speaker.
There are 2 ways you can connect this to your TV, via Bluetooth or HDMI using the audio return channel or “ARC”. Newer TV’s should support this, the HDMI port that supports this should be clearly labeled in the back of your TV. In my case, my Samsung TV uses HDMI port 4 for ARC. I tried both connections and it worked. Powering on the TV also powered on the soundbar.
Setup was simple, the speakers found the subwoofer and the rear channels easily, I didn’t have to do anything aside from plugging it into power and powering on. One all the speakers have been placed, run it through the calibration to complete your setup. I think the design is simple and would blend in well with many living spaces, but the subwoofer may stand out as it’s fairly large.
Sound quality:
Once everything was connected, I was able to control the volume using my (Samsung) TV remote control. If I wanted to adjust the sound level of the subwoofer or the rear channel, I had to use the included JBL remote. I found the sound quality to be very good. The movie really comes alive with the added center channel and the bass! The rear channels come alive when you have a F1 car drive from the front to back or scenes from Top Gun where a plane flies from back to front! The TV experience is so much more immersive with a decent surround sound than watching with just TV speakers or a 2 channel soundbar! I have other sound bars, albeit at a lower price point, that don’t include rear channels, those are good, but I find it just makes the volume louder and adds murky bass. After using the rear speakers for a week, they still didn’t need to be recharged. My only minor complaint is I felt the audio quality of the center channel, where a lot of the conversations usually take place, could be more clear. Compared to my in-wall speaker/receiver system, it sounded more clear to me, but I’m having issues with that system, hence the soundbar.
Overall I found this to be a versatile soundbar with very good overall audio quality and features. It offers a solution for my family room that other soundbars cannot. You won’t be disappointed with this unit.
I would recommend this to a friend!
