Very cool, chic and nostalgic camera!

The Polaroid Now+ brings back memories of the Polaroid 600 Land camera my parents had when I was young. But the Polaroid Now+ has a smartphone app for creative modes. Aesthetically, the camera looks great, with a simple look and a retro feel. The Polaroid app is well designed, I liked how easy it was to connect the camera to the app. Just turn on the camera, open the app and it connects, no additional steps. The smartphone app features include: a self-timer, double exposure, aperture, tripod, portrait, light painting and manual mode. The features Light Painting and Double Exposure are fun features to use, however they definitely require experimentation, which can be expensive due to the film’s cost.
Initially, I found the camera+app a bit confusing. I thought I had to use the app to take any photo, but I wasn’t able to find “auto” mode in the app. My son and I had 6 photos come out real dark. But you actually don’t have to use the app unless you want to get creative. If you want to take a photo, just turn on camera, point and shoot. This is where a more comprehensive manual available on the Polaroid website. Point, shoot and in 15 (long) minutes, we had a picture that well, looked like a Polaroid, vintage looking, not very sharp and colors a bit faded. If you want to get creative, that’s when you use the app. For that, I find it a bit cumbersome. You have to take out your smartphone, turn on camera, change the settings on the app, then take your photo. This camera can be a lot of fun, my son borrowed it a few times already when hanging out with his friends. He brought back a few (underexposed) group shots. But he really likes it, it’s different. Having a picture pop out instantly is pretty cool, just like it was when I was a kid. Except back then, you shook the picture back and forth to have it develop faster. With the Polaroid Now, once you take the photo, you leave it in the camera for 5 seconds, then you take it out and put it face down and wait 15 minutes – don’t shake the photo.
This camera can be lots of fun; the biggest drawback is the price of the film and the develop time. A pack of i-type film with 16 photos will cost you $30, about $2 a photo! Continue to use your smartphone for 95% of your pictures, and when you want some cool vintage photos, break out the Polaroid!
I would recommend this to a friend!

Cordless Waterpik, perfect for home and travel!
on December 29, 2021
Posted by: Gizmo
from New Jersey
I’ve used the countertop version of the Waterpik a few times; I purchased that for my kids to use with their braces. I was curious how the cordless one stacked up to the countertop version. The Cordless Revive runs off 3 AA batteries and is water proof, so it can be used in the shower. The Waterpik comes with 3 heads, 2 classic tips and 1 orthodontic tip. The reservoir holds enough water for a 30 second flossing session.
Comparing to the countertop version, the cordless is not as powerful (max PSI is 75 vs 100 for corded version), doesn’t hold as much water and is much larger. But these differences are all expected. Since I don’t use the WaterPik often, I had to fill it 2 times to floss completely. It takes getting used to, if you don’t loosely close your lips, you might get water all over. For 3 days, after using the Waterpik, I then flossed with string, to my surprised, no additional food particles came out with the string floss! Initially, I was skeptical this would be able to replace traditional flossing, but now open to just using this Waterpik. I dare say, it’s almost fun to use! The cordless Waterpik is great for taking with you when traveling, especially if you have braces!

Works well, can automatically detect pollutants
on December 9, 2021

The Insignia purifier is a HEPA air purifier that’s capable of cleaning a large size room of 497 square feet. The purifier removes common allergens including mold, dust, pet dander, pollen, tobacco smoke and other large irritants. All the things that make you sneeze and you don’t want to breathe in! The design of the Insignia purifier is clean and simple, but nice looking as well. The large display has a easy to see visual indicator of the air quality. Simply look at the row of dots going across the top (green is good, yellow is okay, orange is bad, and red is hazardous). In the middle of the display is a large digital display showing the number of particles < or = 2.5 micrometer in diameter. I can see this display when I’m seated 10’ away.
I have this setup in my home office in the basement of my home. I also have another purifier with all the bells and whistles that costs 4 times as much as the Insignia sitting next to it as the benchmark. I have the Insignia set on “Auto”, this will control the fan speed based on the air quality. To test the air purifier, I used my air brush to paint my model for a few minutes. The paint is acrylic and not much odors, to me anyway. After a few minutes, both air purifiers detected the odors and sprung to action. The Insignia purifier went from the normal 10 particles to 50, the green row of dots turned yellow and the normally whisper quiet fan is now moving at a faster speed that’s more audible.
As far as noise and fan speed, on speed 4, the fastest speed, it’s fairly loud. Loud enough where you probably can’t watch TV at the same time if it’s in the same room. This seems normal though, if I set the other purifier to speed 4, it’s fairly loud as well.
I also like that the Insignia purifier blows the air up instead of at you like a fan. I have a friend that has this older air purifier that blows it out forward, I walked into his apartment and this cold air was blowing at me, I than realized it was his air purifier. Not so comfortable in the winter months.
After using this Insignia air purifier in my home office for 4-5 days, I feel like I can trust it to detect pollutants and clean the air as well as the pricier purifier. It just doesn’t have some features such as an app to control it or eliminate germs. After reviewing this purifier, I will most likely purchase another one for my family member. She’s in her 70’s, so the easy to understand buttons and “Auto” mode are a welcome feature. Replacement filters costs $60 (on sale for $45), which seems reasonable. The purifier itself is priced reasonably at $250 ($190 sale price).

Very functional and clean form factor, works great

This charger by Anker is unlike other’s I’ve seen, design wise. Simple, effective and can charge both a phone and AirPods at the same time!
Included is a 20W charging cube, 5 feet USB-C cable (both ends) and the weighted charging base. The charging rate of this charger is 7.5W. On a side note, the iPhone 13 is capable of being charged at 15W if you use the Apple branded MagSafe charger or an approved 3rd party MagSafe charger. It’s too bad this charger can’t charge at the 15W rate.
The charger has a nice weight to it, it weighs 1 lb. Its heavy enough that when I place my phone on it and when I remove it (with 1 hand), it doesn’t move. The rubber on the bottom of the base helps it from not moving around. It’s funny how we often associate how heavy something feels with quality. In this case, the charging base does look and feel like a well-made product. There are no ugly mold lines on it or any other flaws that make it look cheap.
To charge your phone, you simply place it on top of the charger either in the flat position, or the “open” tilted position. When you have it in the open position, the phone is securely held in place by magnets. I have the Apple leather case on mine and it holds fine. When you first place your phone on the charger, a soft white light glows for a second or two on the bottom of the charger. It’s a nice subtle way to let you know the phone is being charged. When I placed my AirPod Pros on the secondary charger, there isn’t an indicator to let me know it’s being charged. I have to look at the LED on my AirPod case.
With the phone on the charging stand, you can still use your phone. It’s actually a nice viewing angle. This is something you can’t do with those Qi charging pads where your phone sits flat on it.
After using this for a week, I liked it a lot. It’s much more convenient than trying to plug in the lightning wire at the bottom of the phone! All pro’s, no cons with this charger. Makes a great gift for the holidays!

Great sound and volume control! My new favorite!
on November 15, 2021
Posted by: Gizmo
from New Jersey
Overview:
I’ve tried many earbuds over the years from various manufacturer’s, the earbuds I’ve grown attached to and use daily are the Apple AirPods Pro. Since the AirPods Pros are so popular, I will compare the Beats Fit Pro to my AirPods Pro.
The Beats Fit Pro come in an attractive case that charges the earbuds for a total of 24 hours of listening time (6 hours on earbuds+18 hours charging case. The lid on the case is held in the closed position with a magnet, but doesn’t snap down as nicely as the AirPods and doesn’t feel quite as sturdy and there’s a play in the lid. In the case, the earbuds are securely held in place with magnets as well. They snap in place easily when placing the earbuds back into the case. Unlike the AirPods Pro, the Beats case does not have wireless charging, you will have to use the 9” USB-C cable that came with the earbuds. Kind of short, but I’m sure by now, we all have extra USB-C cables lying around.
These Beats are powered with the same H1 chip used in the AirPods, the benefits of the H1 chip include longer battery life, effortless one touch pairing to Apple devices, audio sharing, “hey Siri” feature and was automatic switching between Apple devices.
Comfort:
The Beats earbuds fit very comfortably in my ear. They come with 3 different size rubber tips so you find the correct size for your ear. I used the one that came pre-installed on the earbuds. I had these on for over 2 hours and they were very comfortable, I forgot they were even there. The rubber “leg” for lack of a better word, doesn’t seem like it can be removed, so I’m not sure these earbuds would be a good fit for everyone. I had 2 other family members try them on and they fit their ears fine.
The Beats Fit Pro is designed to be used all day for those with active lifestyles. While my AirPods don’t feel like they would fall out, these Beats feel even more secure in my ears. I took the Beats Fit Pro on a 3-mile jog and a 45-minute stationary bike ride, they felt very secure. I was even able to take my shirt off without them falling off! With the AirPods, I typically have to remove them from my ear before changing my shirt.
Usability:
The sound quality of the beats is very good, compared to the AirPods, I find the base and mid tones are more pronounced. I prefer this sound profile, so overall, I would say the Beats sound better than the AirPods. The active noise cancellation is about the same, both do a great job eliminating noise. I can’t say 1 is better than the other. For water resistance, these are rated as IPX4 (same as AirPods), meaning they’ll survive a splash of water, not water jets or immersion in water.
I generally don’t like buttons on earbuds that you push towards your ear to activate, as this drives the earbud deeper into your ear canal. But the button on the Beats is soft, they don’t require much pressure to use and doesn’t cause any discomfort when using. It’s a great option to be able to program the buttons to control the volume! When I first started using these Beats, I would inadvertently press the button, hanging up on a few calls.
Conclusion:
If you appreciate a bit more base and mid-levels, you’ll probably prefer these over AirPod Pro’s, albeit a larger package size and no wireless charging. Both are excellent earbuds, you can’t go wrong with either.
Pros:
1. Excellent sound, good base and mid-levels.
2. Very secure in ear, won’t fall off.
3. Option ton control volume using left and right earbuds
4. Supports “hey Siri” feature
Cons:
1. No wireless charging
2. Case is larger than the AirPod Pro’s, takes up more space in pocket.

Comfortable pillow, but better options out there
on October 12, 2021
Posted by: Gizmo
from New Jersey
The Bedgear Glacier pillow looks and feels very nice, it’s white cover and gold stitching looks elegant. The outer cover is cool to the touch and feels like a quality cover that will last. There’s a zipper so you can remove the pillow to wash the cover. It features 10 side vents that will help you stay cool during the night. I’m comparing this pillow to a regular pillow my wife recently purchased from a large warehouse store.
This pillow comes in several sizes, based on a chart (body size and side, back or stomach sleeper) you arrive at a size for you. According to the chart, I’m a size 2, body size medium and back and side sleeper. This pillow is thicker than what I’m used to. At first, I felt like my neck is bent too much because the pillow is too thick. After moving around and adjusting the pillow, I was able to find a comfortable position. I used it for a week and found it to be comfortable for side and back sleeping. The cover did stay cool throughout the night, but it is Fall by where I am, with cooler temps outside. While I found the Bedgear pillow comfortable, it wasn’t “that” much better than the plain pillow. I think my 10-year-old daughter put it best, she said “it’s comfortable, but it’s not comfortable, comfortable”!
Conclusion:
I think pillow comfort is very subjective, what’s comfortable to me may be terrible for everyone else. The Bedgear is nice in many ways, the feel of the cover, the softness and it stays cool, but other than that, I wasn’t too impressed by it. I really wanted to like it, but at this price point, it should be 10x better than my warehouse club pillow.

Exc fire pit, less smoke than traditional pits!
on September 25, 2021
Posted by: Gizmo
from New Jersey
About a year ago, I purchased a fire pit, it’s square shaped and made from steel (painted black). It includes a metal cover to make it a flat table and a mesh cover. I’ve only used it about 3x, it sat outside with a cover on it, but parts of it are already rusting. I also seemed that no matter which side I moved to, smoke was always in my face. Obviously depending on the wind.
I jumped at the opportunity to review the Farenheit Flare fire pit, I don’t think my current one will last too long. The Farenheit fire pit comes in 2 pieces, very easy to figure out. Stack big circle over small circle and that’s it. Also included is a spring loaded rod to lift up and position the grill when it’s not hot of course. It comes with a nice bag to store the fire pit and transport it. Although it’s made out of stainless steel, according to the manual, it can still rust.
I started a fire using some paper and burned some wood I purchased at Lowe’s. It seemed easier to get the fire going on this fire pit. The fire burned well and there was noticeably less smoke. The fire pit has holes around the top as well as the bottom for the ash to drop through. I assume this helps with the airflow and helps the fire burn so well. On the night I used the fire pit, the forecast called for rain the next morning. I was expecting a mess of ash and unburnt wood. I was pleasantly surprised, there wasn’t any ash in the fire pit or in the catch bin, probably due to the winds that evening. There was some ash stuck to the side of the fire pit. I spray of the hose and it was all gone. Good as new, there was some change in color due to the heat.
Overall, I like this fire pit a lot, having smoke blow in your face while you’re trying to enjoy your beverage isn’t fun. I can’t wait until it gets cooler and will have to try this with some wood pellets. I wish the logos weren’t as big and obvious. A logo where the metal is stamped instead of cut out might be better. One observation, if you’re transporting the fire pit somewhere, you would put the ring inside the filthy fire pit, it could get messy.

The Nest Doorbell is the battery-powered video doorbell that works with any home. See what’s happening at your door from anywhere and get intelligent alerts about important activity, like when there’s a person, package, animal, or vehicle.* And because there are no wires, you can install it yourself. Nest Doorbell requires the Google Home app and a Google Account – it’s not compatible with the Nest app or the home.nest.com site.

Very good doorbell with excellent image quality
on September 23, 2021
Posted by: Gizmo
from New Jersey
I got this Google Nest Doorbell battery smart doorbell to upgrade my current smart doorbell. The first thing I noticed is the clean designed, but considerably larger than my current doorbell, probably due to the battery inside. It measures approximately 6.25”x1.8”. Although it’s called “Google - Nest Doorbell Battery”, it can be hard wired as well. I thought the name with “battery” in it was a bit confusing.
Setup:
Included in the box was everything I needed to install the Google Nest doorbell, USB-C charging cable, wire harness thing to install, screws, mounting plate and It even included a 20-degree wedge plate to mount the doorbell on an angle. This came in handy for me as my doorbell is on the right hand side of the door, visitors would walk up my walkway on the left, this would allow the motion to detect when people are coming to my doorway, not just when they’re already in front. The install was fairly easy, I mounted mine on the bricks, so I had to use a special drill bit and screws. This is connected to my existing “dumb” doorbell chime mounted on the wall. It sounds a bit off, but it could be my chime. Be sure to keep the little “key” handy for those that plan to install it in a spot where power is not available.
The setup on the Google Home app was quite simple. Launch the app and follow the steps. It took about 3-4 minutes without any issues. The doorbell has facial recognition feature and recognizes when someone has a package. When the package is removed, it will also let you know the package is no longer seen. For the facial recognition, you have to names the faces that the Google Nest picked up. You do this in the Google home app under Home Settings – Nest Aware - Familiar face detection. The facial recognition feature worked for me sometimes, I would say about 30-40% of the time. Perhaps this will improve over time. To allow other family members to view the camera, in the app, there’s a link “Invite home member”. This will send them a link to download the app and provides the details they need to set this up on their app. One downside is that I could not get this doorbell to work with my nest app, I have nest smoke alarms already, I was hoping I would be able to add the doorbell to the same app. It seems, for now at least, I can’t and a separate app is required.
Usage:
The HD video quality is very good, in daylight, the video is clear. In low light, the IR’s provide enough light to get a clear black and white image. In the daytime, the camera exposure is very nice, I can see the visitor’s face and I can see the blue skies in the background. The lens is a wide angle lens of course, this allows me to not only see the visitor at the door, but when the motion is triggered, I see my front yard and part of my driveway as well.
Conclusion:
Overall, the Google Nest doorbell battery is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a smart doorbell. For me, once I got over the size of the device, I found the Google doorbell to be much smarter than my old doorbell! This is a great add-on if you’re already on the Google ecosystem and have their cameras and voice assistant. If you’re in the Amazon Alexa camp, there’s a “Google Home” skill you can add to make this doorbell Alexa compatible.
Pros:
1. Clean minimalist design.
2. I like the pre-recorded responses, choose from: “You can just leave it”, We’ll be right there” No one can come to the door”.
3. Facial recognition – it easily recognized members of my family after setting up.
4. Battery or hard wired connection makes this doorbell very flexible.
5. Google Home app allows you to add 3rd party devices (Arlo cameras for example). This is a nice feature, you can eliminate an app and view your cameras in 1 place.
Cons:
1. Subscription required if you want videos saved and be able to access. Both plans offer discounts for annual payment. Without a subscription, you can only view 3 hours of events.
2. Don’t have the ability to customize the pre-recorded responses, it would be nice to add “Go away” for those pesky door to door salespeople!
3. The doorbell is on the large side, almost the size of a TV remote control.
4. Could not add camera to nest app, needed to install Google Home to setup doorbell camera.

There are better options out there.
on September 21, 2021
Posted by: Gizmo
from New Jersey
About 2 years ago, I upgraded my garage door openers to Chamberlain myQ belt driven openers (great openers by the way, very quiet), so my openers already have wifi and I can open and close with the myQ app. Adding a camera should be very simple…and it was! The box included everything I needed to mount and power the camera. Using the app, I was able to add the camera and setup the wifi without a hitch. I than took it out to the garage and using the magnetic mount, attached it to my opener, plug the USB cable into the other available outlet and I was done. Setup took about all of 10 minutes! The time and date is setup automatically as well.
Performance:
The camera is very clear; the 1080p HD resolution delivers excellent quality video. The wide angle lens is wide enough that I can pretty much cover both doors with 1 camera. The camera mount is nice, the magnetic mount and the 360-degree swivel makes it easy to find an optimal position. Low light video is also very good, images are clear. I found the app to be straightforward and generally, very user friendly. You can “link” the camera to a particular door, so when that door is opened or closed, it would record, although the motion should trigger it to record anyway. There’s a microphone button so you can speak to someone in the garage while you’re viewing the video. Motion sensing and door opening recordings worked well. I’d get notifications each time the door opened and when the camera detected motion.
A camera like this would be super handy for those with amazon key delivery. I had key delivery, but then I turned it off, it was easier to open my front door to retrieve the package rather than going to garage. I haven’t lost a delivery yet all these years.
Video storage:
The lack of local storage or X days or even X hours of free storage is the biggest negative of this camera. I understand that all companies are looking for recurring revenue streams, but to not include even a few days or hours of free video history makes this camera of limited use. You can only view live video. myQ offers 2 pay packages, one offers 30 days of video and the other 7 days of video history. The prices are reasonable and won’t break the bank. But why subscribe to a garage door camera when you can subscribe to some other brand of camera that offers wireless cameras, doorbells cameras etc.
Summary:
I wanted to love this product, and if we’re talking about the product itself, the camera, I like it a lot. It’s the lack of free storage that makes it not worth it in my opinion. Look elsewhere, there are better options to monitor your garage AND the rest of your home.

My Experience:
From the unboxing experience to turning it on for the first time, the steps were very straightforward. I was able to open it and get it working in under 10 minutes. Initially, the picture was a little oversaturated and warm, however I was able to easily fix that with their Camera Hub software (software can be found on Elgato’s downloads page). Overall, I had a very good experience setting up and using the Facecam, so on to the pro’s and con’s.
Pro’s:
As previously mentioned, I really liked how easy it was to set up. Another aspect I really liked about the webcam was the mount. It mounts very well, even on my Alienware monitor where the back is angular and nowhere near parallel to the front. I also like how the camera is able to rotate and pivot atop the mount. When using the camera, one of the biggest benefits is the very easy to use software, and the fact that settings can be saved onto the camera.
The quality and framerate along with the wide field of view makes the video very nice and smooth. The exposure is pretty good; with a desk lamp on the camera is able to properly expose my face even in front of a bright window. The colors are pretty accurate, maybe a tiny bit too red.
Con’s:
The con’s of this camera have nothing to do with the video quality, but with the hardware. The included cable is very thick and feels as if it doesn’t belong with this camera. When setting it up, the cable can pull down on the camera which is annoying. Another annoying feature is that the mount covers some of my screen. The front face of the mount has a good quarter-inch overlapping the front of my monitor.
