The soundbar for rooms w/o space for rear channels
on July 17, 2023
Posted by: Gizmo
When I first learned of this soundbar, I felt it was made exactly for my family room. I like to have surround sound, but the shape of my room doesn’t allow for speaker placement behind the sofa. With the JBL 1000 soundbar, the wireless and battery powered rear channels were perfect for my setup!
Unboxing and setup:
The box is rather large and fairly heavy, this is of course, due to the subwoofer. Included is everything you need to get started including wall mounts, brackets (for soundbar), power cords and even an HDMI cable. Also included are end caps for the soundbar and the detachable speakers. With these end caps, it hides the charging connectors and gives it a nice, polished look. Downlaod the JBL One app to setup the soundbar ony our netowkr. Once this is done, you can AirPlay and login your smart assistants on the speaker.
There are 2 ways you can connect this to your TV, via Bluetooth or HDMI using the audio return channel or “ARC”. Newer TV’s should support this, the HDMI port that supports this should be clearly labeled in the back of your TV. In my case, my Samsung TV uses HDMI port 4 for ARC. I tried both connections and it worked. Powering on the TV also powered on the soundbar.
Setup was simple, the speakers found the subwoofer and the rear channels easily, I didn’t have to do anything aside from plugging it into power and powering on. One all the speakers have been placed, run it through the calibration to complete your setup. I think the design is simple and would blend in well with many living spaces, but the subwoofer may stand out as it’s fairly large.
Sound quality:
Once everything was connected, I was able to control the volume using my (Samsung) TV remote control. If I wanted to adjust the sound level of the subwoofer or the rear channel, I had to use the included JBL remote. I found the sound quality to be very good. The movie really comes alive with the added center channel and the bass! The rear channels come alive when you have a F1 car drive from the front to back or scenes from Top Gun where a plane flies from back to front! The TV experience is so much more immersive with a decent surround sound than watching with just TV speakers or a 2 channel soundbar! I have other sound bars, albeit at a lower price point, that don’t include rear channels, those are good, but I find it just makes the volume louder and adds murky bass. After using the rear speakers for a week, they still didn’t need to be recharged. My only minor complaint is I felt the audio quality of the center channel, where a lot of the conversations usually take place, could be more clear. Compared to my in-wall speaker/receiver system, it sounded more clear to me, but I’m having issues with that system, hence the soundbar.
Overall I found this to be a versatile soundbar with very good overall audio quality and features. It offers a solution for my family room that other soundbars cannot. You won’t be disappointed with this unit.
I would recommend this to a friend!

The Shark Matrix Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum features incredible suction power, Matrix Clean and Precision Home Mapping. It has Incredible Shark suction power and a self-cleaning brushroll, pulling trapped debris, dust, and pet hair from carpets and hardwood floors. With Matrix Clean, the robot cleans using a precision grid taking multiple passes over dirt and debris, leaving no spots missed. The robot empties itself into a bagless base after each clean and holds up to 30 days of dirt and debris. No additional purchase necessary for dirt/dust bags. Now with extended runtime technology, the robot cleans 2x faster (*vs. Shark AI Ultra RV2500, due to more initial runtime in recharge/resume mode). With Precision Home Mapping, the robot uses its 360 LIDAR vision to scan your home and build a detailed map, enabling fully autonomous movement. This also allows your robotic vacuum to detect and avoid objects in its path day or night (*objects 4.5 inches or greater in its path). It creates a precise home map in the SharkClean app so you can select specific areas to clean on-demand, initiate Matrix Clean, and set cleaning schedules from anywhere. Together, Shark cleaning power with Matrix Clean and Precision Home Mapping give you the confidence your robot will complete the cleaning mission every time.

Efficient little vacuum with an excellent app!
on July 13, 2023
Posted by: Gizmo
Over the last 10 days or so, I’ve had the opportunity to test out the Shark Matrix. This is pretty much my first automated vacuum; I wasn’t sure what to expect. The promise of a vacuum that can automatically navigate and vacuum my basement (approx. size 1,100 sq ft) with some uneven flooring and a doorway leading into an office seemed almost too good to be true.
Setup:
Unpacking and putting together the vacuum was simple and took less than 5 minutes. Then I then had to download the Shark app, register and setup the Wi-Fi and I was ready to go. The Shark has to then go through a mapping process where it wanders around your space and with it’s LiDAR, it learns where everything is, including it’s home so it can return and empty itself. The map looked very accurate, it found the sofa and some other furniture. I found the app very easy to get accustomed to and use. The menus are laid out in a logical, easy to understand manner, 2 thumbs up on the app!
Performance:
For the first 2-3 days, I had the Shark placed in a spot that was like a narrow passage (2.5’ wide by 5’) with a wall on one side and a weight bench on the other side, I wanted to keep it out of plain sight. It seemed to take some time for it to get out of this area to start vacuuming. It was not optimal spot for it, so I then moved it to an open spot in the middle of the TV room, this spot was much better.
I have a gym area, a TV room and an office. To get to the gym section, there is a vinyl molding that transitions the hardwood flooring and the rubber gym flooring, the vacuum was able to go over this fairly easily with no fuss. When I first started testing the vacuum, I wasn’t paying attention to it, I’d just turn it on and went to work in my office. I would hear clunking, bumping and a few times it would get stuck. It turns out it kept getting stuck under a weight bench, as the angle metal bar would trap it and it also got stuck under the treadmill. It also didn’t like some of the foot of the weight equipment, the lidar wasn’t able to detect the 2” tubing of various pieces of equipment, it would bump into it until it found its way around it. To resolve this, I took out the app and added a “no-go zone” for it to avoid, very simple. Now the vacuum stayed out of the gym area completely.
My initial thought when I started using the Shark was “is this what it feels like to have a pet” it seems the vacuum wanders around and getting itself stuck and into trouble. The next day, I had a few minutes, so I watched the vacuum clean. I was impressed with how methodically it would go back and forth in open areas. When it came to a large obstacle, it didn’t bump into it, instead, it stopped, went around the obstacle and then continued going. It was almost kind of fun to watch. But like a pet, you have to “pet proof” the area you want to vacuum to clean. I had to clean up and removed small obstacles, move items such as an air purifier closer to the wall and tuck in the wires so it doesn’t get stuck.
Battery life is very good, it’s able to clean the entire basement on a single charge. I don’t have any carpeting though.
Conclusion:
Now after 1 week and a half, as I sit here writing this review, the vacuum is wandering around vacuuming. It’s nice once everything is setup properly (no obstacles, mapped out and no go zones). It does great in large open areas; it just goes back and forth and cleans efficiently. When it’s in an area with more furniture or other obstacles, it’s a bit tough to watch as it bumps around a bit like a blind person until it finds it way out. I don’t think these robotic vacuums are for everyone. If you’re impatient and just want to get the vacuuming done, you may just want to purchase a regular vacuum.
The vacuum just rolled by, went to it’s base and emptied itself, I love how it turns around and slowly backs into the base, they should add beeping sounds like when a truck is backing up! After emptying itself, it rolled away and went back to the room it was cleaning prior. I now have this scheduled to clean twice a week in the morning. If you’re looking for a robotic vacuum to do your dirty work for you, add the Shark matrix to your list, you won’t be disappointed!

Solid monitor that looks and performs very well!
on June 15, 2023
Posted by: Gizmo
Overview:
This Samsung 34” ultra-wide screen monitor is a very nice-looking monitor. The thin bezel, simple stand and thin design gives it a contemporary look. You couldn’t tell from looking at it that it’s priced under $400. It even includes features you’d expect from higher priced monitors such as FreeSync for gaming, Picture in/by Picture mode, and auto ambient light detection.
Unboxing and Setup:
The setup was very easy, a HDMI and DisplayPort cables are included. My laptop doesn’t have either of these ports, so I had to use a USB-C hub that has HDMI ports on it. There are 2 things I wish the monitor had, 1. an adjustable (or a taller stand) and 2. a USB-C input source that can power my laptop at the same time. The lower edge of the monitor sits at 3.5” from the desk. I use this monitor as an extension of my 15” laptop which has a 9” tall screen. So unless I use a desk mounted arm for this monitor, it’s partially blocked. The monitor I had been using with my laptop, a Samsung curved) has a USC-C port for video in and also provides power thus eliminating the need for the laptop power supply and less wires.
Performance and Specifications:
In my tests, the monitor performed flawlessly. I used it mainly for office applications, web surfing, YouTube videos, and movies. I also play a few games on it without any issues. In the morning, my home office gets a lot of light from the windows. I didn’t have any issues with the monitor brightness.
Here’s a tip on moving your applications around, using the shortcut Windows+<> (left of right arrow key), you can move your application windows easily without needing to manually drag and resize. Also try Windows+up/down arrow to resize into quarters.
Conclusion:
There’s a lot to like about this monitor with a few minor drawbacks as described. Before this monitor, I was using a Samsung curved monitor and got used to that. At 34”, I prefer the curve over the flat monitor. But this is an excellent monitor overall.

A Reliable All-Around Home computer!
on June 8, 2023
Posted by: Gizmo
Introduction:
The Dell Inspiron 3020 desktop computer is a dependable and versatile machine designed for general home use. This computer offers a balanced blend of reliability, performance and affordability. While it may not cater to the gaming crowd, it excels in providing a seamless computing experience for everyday users.
Performance and Specifications:
Powered by an Intel Core i5 processor and 8GB of RAM, the Dell Inspiron 3020 is perfect for everyday computing tasks. I was able to seamlessly multitask, web browsing, edit spreadsheets and documents, as well as stream music at the same time. Out of curiosity, I did try playing a game on it to see how the Intel Graphics would handle it. I installed Valorant and Roblox, as I expected, it wasn’t too good, I was having lag issues. I’ll be sure to stick to Office applications, web surfing and YouTube!
The system has a 512GB SSD drive in it, that’s perfect for my needs as most of my files are stored on a NAS. I would use the SSD for installation of software applications.
Design and Build Quality:
The Dell Inspiron 3020 boasts a sleek and minimalist design, its compact form factor ensures it doesn't occupy excessive desk space, making it suitable for smaller setups. The side panel comes off easily without any tools. Inside, there is space for an additional memory (total of 2 memory slots) and a PCIe slot for a graphics card. As with other Dell desktops I’veowned, the build quality is reliable, with sturdy construction that will last.
This desktop computer offers a reasonable selection of ports and connectivity options. It includes 3 USB type A and 1 USB-C ports on the front, another 4 USB ports on the back, HDMI and display port output for connecting to external displays and an Ethernet port for wired internet connectivity. In addition, there is also a DVD drive and a convenient SD card slot on the front. The ports allows users to connect various peripherals and expand the system's functionality as needed. I was a bit surprised there are so many USB type A ports and not many USB-C ports.
Conclusion:
The Dell Inspiron 3020 i5 desktop computer is an excellent choice for individuals seeking a reliable, all-around home computer. Its performance, affordability, and versatility make it well-suited for everyday tasks like web browsing, document editing and multimedia. While not suitable for gaming enthusiasts, this desktop delivers a seamless computing experience for general users.

Excellent tool for your fitness journey!
on June 2, 2023
Posted by: Gizmo
This is one of those devices I didn’t think I would need. My current scale only measures weight and I body fat percentage. This innovative device has revolutionized the way I monitor my health and has become an essential companion on my wellness journey. With its ability to measure body fat percentage, body mass, bone mass, heart rate, and even metabolic age, this smart scale offers a comprehensive overview of my overall health status. The app was easy to setup, I simply followed the steps to connect to the scale, enter my height and weight, allow it to access my iPhone health data and the app was setup.
One of the standout features of the Withings smart scale is its accuracy. I compared the heartrate from the scale to my apple watch and it was the same. I have found the measurements to be consistent, providing reliable data that helps me track my progress and set realistic goals. The scale seamlessly syncs with the Withings Health Mate app, which displays my results in an intuitive and easy-to-understand format. The app also allows me to set personal targets, monitor trends, view historical data, compare my fitness level to others so I know where I stand.
The inclusion of body fat percentage and bone mass measurements has been particularly valuable to me. These metrics provide a more holistic understanding of my body composition, going beyond weight alone. I’ve been trying to exercise more, mostly cardio type workouts, and eating less bad carbs. By tracking changes in body fat percentage, I can assess the effectiveness of my fitness routine and adjust my nutrition accordingly. Having the body fat percentage can be encouraging as well, provided it decreases.
Lastly, I appreciate the sleek and modern design of the Withings smart scale. Its slim profile and minimalist aesthetic make it a seamless addition to my bathroom décor. The scale itself feels sturdy and well-built, instilling confidence in its durability and long-term reliability. They also include rubber feet for carpeting, which I don’t need, but can appreciate.
In conclusion, the Withings smart scale is a game-changer for anyone looking to take control of their health and well-being. Its accurate measurements, comprehensive health tracking capabilities, and seamless integration with the Health Mate app make it an invaluable tool. I highly recommend this smart scale to anyone committed to living a healthier lifestyle and monitoring their progress along the way. At the end of the day, it’s a tool. Like any other thing else, if you are not committed to your health, to changing exercise and eating habits, the smartest scale can only do so much.

A capable no-nonsense laptop!
on April 24, 2023
Posted by: Gizmo
The Acer Aspire 3 is a well-priced laptop with all the features most would be looking for in a laptop. Perfect for students looking for a laptop for school or a work/office laptop. With the Ryzen 5 and 8GB of RAM, this is more than capable to run Office applications, browse the web, watch videos etc. What it’s not good for would be power hungry photo/video editing applications or intense gaming.
Physically, the Aspire 3 is on the large side (14” wide x 9.5” deep), it doesn’t feel heavy (a bit under 4lbs). Still, I wouldn’t want to commute with it. The entire laptop is constructed from plastic, and while this keeps the weight down, it also won’t win any beauty competitions.
The Aspire features a large 15.6” IPS touch screen, 512GB SSD drive, built in camera, HDMI, USB-C and USB connections. The keyboard also features a number pad on the side, something you don’t see often, although the keys are a bit smaller.
Overall, the Aspire 3 is an excellent, no-nonsense, practical laptop. Perfect for someone who doesn’t want to spend a lot for a laptop.

Excellent iPhone case with Magsafe at fair price!
on March 21, 2023
Posted by: Gizmo
For the past week, I’ve been using this Insignia silicone case with MagSafe there is a lot to like about the case, and a few minor gripes. The outside of the case has a really nice, soft, smooth feel to it with just the right amount of stickiness to it. The inside has a microfiber liner that looks like it would keep your phone from getting scratched, should dust get in between the phone and your case. The raised lip around the camera will help keeping your camera lens from getting scratched. Appearance wise, the case is a winner, all the buttons and openings for the charger are spot on. The only minor gripe I have is the prominent mold line, that bugged me for about 10 minutes.
I usually keep my phone in my jacket pocket or pants pocket. The slight grippiness of the case made it sometimes more challenging to get it into my pocket compared to my other case that’s more slippery. But that’s to be expected. Life is all about trade-offs, with the grippiness feel to it comes dust! Each time I put my phone in my pocket and take it out, the case was coated with dust and sometimes hair (yes, I do wash my clothing). I found this to be especially true the first 2 days when the case was freshly opened. After 3+ days, it seemed to have less dust tuck to it. Probably because there’s already a coating of fine dust and oils from my hand to keep more dust from sticking to the case.

The MagSafe feature works great, I use it with all my MagSafe accessories (charger, and 2 dash mounts) no issues at all.
Overall I like this case a lot and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a nice case. I’m already looking to purchase another color and one for a family member! To me, this case is nicer than other cases costing more, good job Best Buy/Insignia!

The Apple iPhone of shavers!
on February 10, 2023
Posted by: Gizmo
The first thing you should notice about the Norelco 9000 rotary shaver when you unbox it is the beautiful design. This might sound strange since I’m writing about a shaver, but it’s very nice looking! Inside the box, you’ll find the shaver, a fairly large travel case, a Quick-Clean Pod with fluid cartridge, a corded charger, a small cleaning brush and the user manual. It takes about an hour to charge fully and should last 60 minutes. A quick charge of just 5 minutes should be enough energy for 1 use. The included travel case is nice, a bit on the large side, large enough to hold the shaver, charging cable and the click on precision trimmer attachment.
The 9000 is fairly lightweight and very comfortable to hold. The notched rubber part on the back is shaped so your finger can fit right in and grip it comfortably. The fit and finish on this razor is incredible. The sound this shaver makes sounds high tech and very quiet. When I compared the S9000 to the Norelco 7000 series shaver, the S9000 sounds much nicer, more quiet, a smoother and almost high tech sound. The 7000, while not a bad shaver at all, sounds less refined and louder.
I use the shaver dry, you can use this in the shower with gels and shaving cream if you wish. The shave is as close as any other electric shaver I’ve used. The 3 heads pivot individually to contour to your face. I found the pivoting heads to work very well, it shaved off all my stubbles very quickly and with minimal effort. With my foil shaver, I have to go over a few times and look closely in a well-lit area to make sure I got all my stubbles. Once done, simply press the release button in front of the rotary shaver to pop open the top and rinse off with water (after each use).
With this trimmer, there is no pop up trimmer on the back, which I find very convenient and use all the time. Instead, you have to take off the rotary heads by pulling straight up (I was uncomfortable the first time I did this, I was worried I would break it) and replacing it with the trimming attachment. I couldn’t help noticing that this trimming attachment didn’t do as good a job on my sideburns as my current foil shaver did. I think it’s because of the size of the “teeth”, the teeth and the gaps in between on the Norelco is wider than my current foil shaver. It seems the sacrificed convenience over form factor when designing this shaver. With the notch on the back where your finger comfortably sits, that is where most shavers would have the hair trimmer built in instead of having to swap out the unit.
This shaver also takes less time, probably due to the 3 heads covers more surface area. After using the Norelco for several days, I gotten used to the Norelco. It does the job quickly, the shaver itself is more quiet than my foil shaver. I don’t find the app that useful, not sure what shave history does for me. It seems like every device has an app these days, whether it needs it or not.
Also included with this shaver is the quick clean pod. Once you do it once and understand how it works, it’s quite convenient to use. In a nutshell, you open the liquid and place the entire container into the pod container. There’s a little ring you snap to give you a carrying handle to lift into and out of the cleaning pod. Then place cleaning pod lid back on and place shaver in and press the start button. The shaver will know to go into clean mode, in 1 minute, it will be done. Depending how often you use the cleaning solution, you might have to replace it after a month (daily use) or 3 months (weekly use) - $12 for 2 pods.
The Norelco S9000 is a beautiful device, it’s for the person who appreciates design and form factor, not so much for someone that is on a budget or demands practicality. Know what you are getting, there are rotary shavers that are less expensive that does a similar job. Much like a luxury car vs. budget car, they both get you to the same place, but which would you rather drive?

Nice little shaver, you won't be disappointed!
on February 5, 2023
Posted by: Gizmo
I’ve been using electric shavers for 25+ year, but I’ve always used the foil type shaver, this Norelco 7600 is the first time I’m trying a rotary shaver. Inside the box, you’ll find the Norelco 7600 shaver, a travel case, a Quick-Clean Pod with fluid cartridge, corded charger (the charger plugs into bottom of the shaver handle), a small cleaning brush and the user manual. Note: the charger it comes with is only a wire that plugs into the shaver, the other end is a USB-A connection, you’ll need a USB block to charge. It’s like the new iPhones, just the wire is included. It takes an hour to charge fully and should last 60 minutes. The included travel case is nice, not too big, just big enough to hold the shaver and the charging cable…if you fold it neatly (see photo).
The 7600 is fairly lightweight and comfortable to hold. The 3 heads pivot individually to contour to your face. After each use, you’re supposed to clean the shaver. There’s a small button on the front to flip open the shaving heads for easy cleaning. It has SenseIQ technology to detect your beard density for better shave. In addition, there’s a Philips Norelco app that connects to the shaver via Bluetooth. The app gives you feedback on your shaving and all sorts of other information on shaving including shave history.
The shaver can be used wet or dry and with shaving creams and gels, I plan to use it dry. There is a handy pop up trimmer on the back which I find very convenient for trimming the sideburns. Since I’m on the topic of the pop up trimmer, I noticed the trimmer didn’t trim off as much hair like my current foil shaver did. I think it’s because of the size of the teeth, the teeth on the Norelco is wider than my current foil shaver (photo attached). The shaver itself does a very good job in trimming my facial hair, it’s like a little lawnmower on my face! It gave me a close shave; I would say about the same as my foil shaver when it comes to closeness. Where this shaver excels is that it trims all the random hair that’s on the side of my face, away from my chin area, with the foil shaver, it misses some of that hair.
I found the illustrations and instructions for the quick clean pod a bit confusing, basically you open the liquid and place the entire container into the pod container. Overall, a very good shaver, I would recommend this to anyone looking for a full featured rotary shaver at a reasonable price.

Great camera to start and grow with!

A few years back, I was all in the Canon ecosystem, I had the Canon 6D DSLR and a few nice lenses that I loved! I traded all that in because it was too much gear to pack and carry for vacations. I found the mirrorless cameras that were coming out to be very nice and compact. Fast forward a few years later, while I still like Sony the mirrorless I have, I have to say, due to its small size, it’s not the most comfortable grip. When the opportunity to test the Canon R10 mirrorless presented itself, I happily obliged.
While it’s not as compact as other mirrorless cameras on the market, the R10 is a nice compromise of size and comfortable grip. With the strap anchor points, I can easily put a comfortable hand strap on this camera, something I had struggled with on my current mirrorless. The camera is fairly lightweight; the body is made from plastic with sections of rubber texture where your hands would be. At 3”, the screen is easy to see while you’re taking photos or using the touch screen to select menu items. Speaking of menus, I found the settings easy to use, this has not changed much from other Canon’s I’ve had. If I go to “Scene” mode, the icons displayed to select the scene you want are very intuitive. The description of each scene along with a sample photo of the scene makes this a great camera for beginners.
With the kit lens that’s included, I thought the photos I got were very good. Mostly sharp and colors seem fairly accurate. With the lowest aperture setting of 4.5, I wasn’t able to get any shots with the pleasing bokeh in the background. I generally don’t expect too much from the included lens. This lens is great for someone starting out. The R10 is backwards compatible with EF and EF-S (with optional EF-EOS R adapter) lenses, so there are plenty of great lenses to choose from.
When taking photos, the camera tries to guess what you want to focus on, it recognizes faces. If it’s not what you want to focus on, simply tap on the screen of what you want to focus on. For me, the best part is that it can auto focus when in video mode! I remember my previous Canon’s did not have this feature, which made taking videos difficult and mostly useless for me. To take videos, you simply press on the red button on top. No need to switch to “video” mode. Though you still can switch to video more for more video options. I tested the camera on a few occasions, one by the shore, where we came across a Praying Mantis. I also tested out the sport mode when my son decided to practice his skateboarding tricks. The photos came out very good, I think with a nice low aperture prime, you have an even better camera!
I would highly recommend this camera to anyone that is looking for a mirrorless camera. The R10 has many great features that makes it a versatile camera for the beginner or intermediate photographer. Want to blog, grab a tripod and flip out the 3” screen, plug in an external mic if needed! Going on vacation, this is the camera for you, not too large and it takes great photos and videos! With the Canon, you also have access to so many great lens usually at decent prices.
