The very beginning of Stryper ROCKS!
on February 21, 2009
Posted by: Fiend

This is the original demo of Roxx Regime, from 1983, before they became Stryper. The songs are all excellent, with an unpolished feel and spirited energy. These tunes really rock, they have the early 80's Heavy Metal/Hair Metal sound. "Honestly" is a ballad that really touches off tremendous emotion, the most mellow tune on this disc. If you are already familiar with Stryper, you will hear and recognize the talented musicianship, a band in their Metal infancy, that would become a premier Christian Heavy Metal band. Listening to "The Roxx Regime Demos", for me, is listening to a Heavy Metal band that obviously paid their dues and made some excellent, high spirited music. Consistently melodic, with a great heavy groove, I cannot resist recommending this music. This disc definitely puts me in a great mood, the lyrics and Heavy Metal gel together perfectly. "The Roxx Regime Demos" has proved to be a quality purchase for me, plus it is quite the Heavy Metal find as well. This is a definite must for all Stryper fans, fans of '80's Heavy Metal should find this to be quite a neat surprise.
The liner notes are cool, with 4 pages of credits, a 1 page written background on "The Roxx Regime Demos", 2 photos of Roxx Regime/Stryper, plus 1 page depicting Roxx Regime/Stryper concert posters & magazine covers from the 1980's. Roxx Regime/Stryper is: Michael Sweet on vocals & guitar, Robert Sweet on drums, Oz Fox on vocals & guitar and Timothy Gaines on vocals & bass.
What's great about it: Actual demos of Roxx Regime, every song is excellent.
What's not so great: NO Complaints.

Ratt "Out Of The Cellar" is stellar Heavy Metal
on February 19, 2009

In my Metal opinion, Ratt "Out Of The Cellar" is the best Ratt album from their catalog. I always have been very impressed by every song on "Out Of The Cellar". Released in 1984, Ratt created very catchy Heavy Metal/Hair Metal tunes here, all very melodic with memorable vocal harmonies. That being said, the songs truly rock, "Wanted Man", Your In Trouble" and "Back For More" solidifies my opinion on how terrific Ratt can play Heavy Metal. "Round and Round" just seems to be one of those Heavy Metal songs that I have never tired of, like the rest of this album, I find it addicting. I honestly find this album to be very credible due in fact to the excellent musicianship of Warren DeMartini and Robbin Crosby on guitar, Stephen Pearcy on vocals, Bobby Blotzer on drums and Juan Crocier on bass. This is excellent 80's Heavy Metal that is pumped up fun. I strongly recommend "Out Of The Cellar" to fans of 80's Heavy Metal & Hair Metal. This is just a strong album of songs, the appreciation should extend to Hard Rock fans as well.
What's great about it: Every song. Warren DeMartini on guitar, melodic, catchy, fun tunes.
What's not so great: No Complaints.

Edguy have outdone themselves - POWERFUL Metal!!
on February 18, 2009

Seriously, if you have not purchased an Edguy album ever, now is the time. "Tinnitus Sanctus" is absolutely the best album thus far from Edguy. Well, personally I have enjoyed every Edguy album ever created, yet this is power packed with some of their most mature and dark material they have ever done. You will not find the slick and fun "Lavatory Love Machine" material on this album, the lyrics are deep and emotion filled, however, Tobias Sammet does not go overboard on the serious side either. These songs are reality driven, "The Pride of Creation" is a track that embarks on the philosophical side of religion, albeit done tastefully with class. Overall, Tobias Sammet makes you think about the lyrics throughout this album, this I find very appealing. As for the music itself - brace yourself for what I feel will be the very best Power Metal album of 2009! Very monumental are the guitar leads, addictive are the hooks and melodic power of each song. The energy, the background vocals, the musicianship and of course the lead vocals of Tobias Sammet are as great as Power Metal could ever claim to be. This is one heck of a powerful Metal ride! To me, "Tinnitus Sanctus" is so good, I keep looking at the actual liner notes to make sure I am not imagining things. Definitely, without any reasonable doubt, buy this album and prepare yourself for what should be on every 2009 top album list for Metal. Edguy and Tobias Sammet really raised the Power Metal bar here, it will be raised again by Edguy too.
Edguy are: Tobias Sammet on lead vocals, Jens Ludwig on guitar, Dirk Sauer on guitar, Tobias "Eggi" Exxel on bass and Felix Bohnke on drums. The liner notes are exactly what they should be like, 20 pages of complete lyrics, 4 band photos, individual band member photos, 2 pages of live concert photos, 2009 European tour dates, credits and thank yous.
What's great about it: Honestly, every single song. Tobias Sammet's vocals & song writing. The entire band.
What's not so great: Absolutely NO complaints.

Black Sabbath + DIO = Masters of Metal!
on February 18, 2009
Posted by: Fiend

Black Sabbath, fronted by Ronnie James Dio, in my opinion, is what Metal is all about. Dio's vocals are so dynamic, his range is profound. Dio has an uncanny way of extolling such incredible emotion with his voice, always treading with a unique haunting tone. Tony Iommi with his classic Metal riffs and leads, Tony's distinguishable sound is a trademark of Black Sabbath and Metal. Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice are so incredible as the tandem that crushes as a rhythm section. The songs are taken from the four albums Black Sabbath did with Ronnie James Dio, "The Mob Rules", "Voodoo" and "Lady Evil" are such amazing Metal songs, the musical Metal power of these songs are simply historic for me. The three new songs are very, very good. "Ear In The Wall" is the heaviest of the 3, Tony Iommi delivers a solo in this song that is so unreal, I get an extremely psyched up feeling that is all Metal goodness from it! "The Devil Cried" and "Shadow Of The Wind" are both slower paced, driven by the riff and stomp Metal that is characteristic of the Dio/Sabbath combination. On these new songs, Dio sings like he is thirty years old again and Black Sabbath plays like they are too. This is one terrific disc to own and cherish! I recommend this disc to all Metal fans, Black Sabbath "The Dio Years" is a Metal keeper.
The liner notes are superior as a 12 page fold out. There are 5 pages of written history & anecdotes on the 4 Dio/Black Sabbath albums which makes for a great read. Also included in the liner notes are extended artwork and original artwork from the 4 Dio/Black Sabbath albums, 1 small photo of the band, credits and thank yous.
What's great about it: Greatest hits, all 3 new songs, Dio's vocals, Tony Iommi on guitar, Geezer on bass, Vinny on drums!

Angel "White Hot" is good old school Hard Rock!
on February 16, 2009
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
Angel "White Hot" is a really decent, good, Hard Rock album. Released in 1977, this is legitimate old school Hard Rock that, in my opinion, really matters. Angel is a band that flies under the Hard Rock/Heavy Metal radar, a neat band to get into and add to your music collection. Every song is really cool, the overall sound and production quality reminds me of the earliest of Kiss albums. The music of Angel is bona fide Hard Rock, borderline early Heavy Metal. The songs are all catchy, melodic and fun. "Got Love If You Want It" and "Stick Like Glue" are good examples of the fun lyrics that Angel uses, these two songs are terrific. "The Winter Song" is a diverse track, it has a heavy beat, yet it is also a Hard Rock ballad that is filled with great emotion and spirited lyrics. You will also hear quite the inspired chorus on "The Winter Song" as well, adding to the total uplifting sound and feel. Overall, Angel "White Hot" is definitely worth owning and turning to for some good retrospective Hard Rock.
Angel on "White Hot": Gregg Guiffria on synthesizer and keyboards, Frank DiMino on lead vocals & background vocals, Punky Meadows on lead guitar & acoustic guitar, Felix Robinson on bass and Barry Brandt on drums. The liner notes are 4 pages of extended artwork and credits. There are no lyrics in the liner notes.
What's great about it: Every song is cool, a legit Hard Rock band, lyrics, "The Winter Song" is memorable
What's not so great: No complaints.

Reo Speedwagon "Hi Infidelity" is AWESOME Rock!!
on February 16, 2009

What a terrific album is "Hi Infidelity"! Released back in 1980, wow do I think the world of this album! Catchy, catchy, and as melodious as it gets with Rock & Roll. REO Speedwagon definitely created a set of songs here that were/still are Pop radio friendly. "Tough Guys" and "In Your Letter" are my favorite tunes, they are songs that were not considered as hits from this album, yet they very well could have been. "Keep On Loving You" is simply put, a Rock power ballad that explodes with emotion, due in part to the fabulous vocals of Kevin Cronin. What stands out for me with REO Speedwagon, especially on "HI Infidelity", is the superb play of Neal Doughty on the Hammond Organ. You can hear how special a sound the Hammond Organ gives to song, "Don't Let Him Go" is a perfect example. This album does rock, even with the dominating lyrics of love. Overall, the musicianship of the entire band is five star. Every song is great, no pretenders to be found on this album! At one time, this album was a #1 best seller, "Hi Infidelity" will always get high marks and consistent listens from me.
What's great about it: Every song, the lyrics, musicianship, vocals, catchy melodies & rhythm.
What's not so great: Absolutely NO Complaints.

Great album by The Doobie Brothers! REALLY GREAT!
on February 16, 2009

The Doobie Brothers "Minute By Minute" is so loaded with Classic Rock goodness, every song is a standout winner to me. Released in 1978, this album continues to impress and entertain me each passing year. This is Rock & Roll that picks you up, a true feel good album! Yes, the hits are fabulous and never grow stale: "What A Fool Believes", "Minute By Minute" and "Dependin' On You". What is so outstanding about this album is the continuous flow of great songs, "Don't Stop To Watch The Wheels" is actually my favorite track, it Rocks so well! "Steamer Lane Breakdown" is an outstanding instrumental that is ignited by a blend of bluegrass, country and good old fashioned Rock. This song jams, the picking is absolutely entertaining on this tune. The lead vocals of Patrick Simmons are stuff of legend, alongside the lead vocals and vocal harmonies of another Rock legend - Michael McDonald. Wow, to have two lead vocalists like this in one band, that is down right amazing! This is an all time great Rock album that has a permanent place in my music collection. Overall, "Minute By Minute" is not too heavy, not too mellow, it is just right!
The liner notes are 8 pages of complete lyrics and credits.
What's great about it: Every song, musicianship, all the vocals.
What's not so great: Absolutely no complaints.

Fleetwood Mac - undeniably superb with "Rumours"

In my opinion, Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" is one of the greatest Rock albums ever created. It is not just about hit songs, with Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" it is the total musical package, with the vocals of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, all the musicianship, the vocal harmonies, the melodies, the lyrics and unique Rock sound. Released in 1977, the music of Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" has always sounded current, with such a rich and strong Rock vibe. "Go Your Own Way" is a song that demonstrates how Fleetwood Mac always structured their musical strengths, molding them together to create this music that will forever be heard. This music of Fleetwood Mac can easily lift your mood and make you feel downright good, just listen to "You Make Loving Fun" for proof of this! My opinion is that "Rumours" is an excellent album to own, a sure fire must for Classic Rock fans or any fan who appreciates great Rock musicianship & vocals.
Fleetwood Mac: Lindsey Buckingham on vocals & guitar, Stevie Nicks on vocals, John McVie on bass, Mick Fleetwood on drums & percussion and Christine McVie on keyboards & synthesizers. The liner notes are 8 pages of complete lyrics, with a few black & white band photos and credits.
What's great about it: Every song, so memorable are the melodies and lyrics, each member of Fleetwood Mac!!

"Evolution" is a great, key Journey album to own.

Released on April 5th of 1979, "Evolution" further solidified Journey as a band that could write and play music with impeccable Rock integrity. Every song is so good, with the unique Rock sound that only Journey can create. A multi-platinum seller, this album belongs in everyone's Classic Rock collections. Steve Perry on lead vocals is of course, a prolific and legendary singer. I cannot compliment the musicianship of Journey enough, Neal Schon on lead guitar and Ross Valory on bass are two genuine Rock icons. Steve Smith on drums is one of the best ever in Rock. Gregg Rolie was an integral piece to creating Journey's Rock sound, the music on "Evolution" really benefited from his Hammond B-3 organ and his vocals. "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" may be the biggest hit from "Evolution", yet you will find yourself immersed in the rest of the songs all the more. This is just one terrific Rock album to own and listen to time and again.
What's great about it: Every song, the entire band, the unique Rock sound of Journey
What's not so great: NO complaints.

Gamma Ray "Land Of The Free ll" is a superb Power Metal album that should be easily embraced by all fans of this genre, (Helloween, Blind Guardian, Edguy, Firewind). Kai Hansen, (former - original lead vocalist and guitarist for Helloween) is very good on vocals & guitar on this release. Kai Hansen is a true founding father of Power Metal, he never disappoints on any Gamma Ray album. "To Mother Earth" is a cool and yet powerful song, a reflection on the environmental plight of our planet. The chorus on this song is standout. "Rain" is a great song, with intriguing lyrics and a heavy upside throughout. The musicianship you hear with Gamma Ray is top shelf in the Power Metal genre, any fan of Metal should recognize the accomplishment and skill at which these guys play. Every song here is rich with prolific and momentous chorus, melody and speed. Definitely buy Gamma Ray "Land Of The Free ll" and give your ears the Power Metal food they deserve!
Gamma Ray is: Kai Hansen on guitars & lead vocals, Henjo Richter on guitars & backing vocals, Dirk Schlachter on bass & backing vocals and Dan Zimmermann on drums & backing vocals. The liner notes are stupendous, with 16 full color pages of extended artwork, individual and group photos, complete lyrics, credits and thank yous.
What's great about it: "Rain" is a great song, the musicianship, lyrics, vocals and the Power Metal!
What's not so great: NO Complaints.
