Set The World On Fire... Really Does Smoke!
on June 22, 2011
Posted by: Fiend

This second album from Black Veil Brides is worth picking up, especially if you are into Hair Metal and Arena Heavy Metal from the 80's. This band brings back the glory of that 80's era of Heavy Metal and fuses it with a Modern Heavy Metal sound.
Set The World On Fire plays out from beginning to end with melodic and heavy guitars, plus a rhythm section that thumps and thunders along in psyched-up fashion. Clean & harmonious vocals that remind me a bit of Paul Stanley of KISS. The Punk influenced chorus throughout these songs are catchy and cool. Buy this new Black Veil Brides... it's a good Summer album to crank up!
What's great about it: Melodic songs, still a heavy album, good musicians & vocals
What's not so great: Nothing worth complaining about... really

The New Czars Exemplify Diverse Hard Rock!
on September 29, 2010
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
Founding member of The New Czars, lead guitarist and vocalist Greg Hampton, is no stranger to the Rock Music industry. Greg is the lead vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, lyricist and producer for "Doomsday Revolution" and he comes packing with impressive Rock 'N' Roll credentials. Greg Hampton was a lead guitarist and songwriter for Alice Cooper's concept album "Along Came A Spider".
With his band mates Paul Ill (bass) and David "Chilli" Moreno (drums), they sound as if they have been doing this gig together for quite some time... only this is their debut album and three is not a crowd.
"Doomsday Revolution" unwraps it's heavy side with the Industrial edginess from "Keep On Goin'". The hardened vocals and guitar licks of Greg Hampton simultaneously keeps this song moving at an addicting tempo. "Confessions" takes right over where keep on goin' left off, with an almost maddeningly loud vibe that rises from this song. I envision a full scale implosion of my decades old stereo speakers, at any moment, while this song is being cranked to high.
"Why Do U Have 2 Lie" exhibits Greg Hampton vocally toning things down, amidst a mid-tempo Hard Rock swirl of sound. "Time Stops" is an unexpected surprise on this album. Another mid-tempo ballad, Greg Hampton proves he can croon with a David Coverdale like accessibility. Melodic and hooky, "Time Stops" also incorporates a sitar for some Eastern World ambiance
The title track, "Doomsday Revolution" takes no prisoners with it's Hard and Heavy Industrial mayhem, which comes across as The New Czars answer to their version of an anthem. Trust me, the chorus on "Doomsday Revolution" alone is enough to get the adrenaline pumping up the psyche-out meter.
With 16 songs to digest on "Doomsday Revolution", there are no dull moments. Be it Industrial, Rock, Hard Rock or slivers of Traditional Metal, you will hear it on this album. Just don't stray too far away... for the Alternative and Electronica bug will be poking you on the back from the likes of "Funky Detour".
If ever there was a surefire flag bearer for Music Appreciation 101, then it is Greg Hampton and his band The New Czars. The totality of musicianship from The New Czars Greg Hampton, David "Chilli" Moreno and Paul Ill have left an undeniable impression on my ears, an impression that won't evaporate for me anytime soon.
Fans of Industrial Rock/Hard Rock, Progressive Rock genres and Modern Hard Rock/Metal should strongly consider picking up "Doomsday Revolution". Guitar enthusiasts are urged to take an earful of what Greg Hampton is playing on this album.
What's great about it: musicianship, lyrics, vocals of Greg Hampton
What's not so great: No complaints.

Scorpions ROCK with powerful songs!
on July 16, 2010
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
As has been stated by the Scorpions themselves, they are retiring and have embarked on a 3 year farewell tour. "Sting In The Tail" is as powerful and melodic of a Scorpions studio album as any this iconic band has ever created! I must admit, after seeing them LIVE this Summer at the M3 Rock Festival, this album only means that much more to me.
"Raised On Rock", "Sting In The Tail" and "Spirit Of Rock" are just 3 Rockers that set this album apart from ANY Heavy Metal album release from 2010... the deep rooted Rock 'N' Roll emotion is on high with all the Scorpions sensation you could ever ask or wish for from these songs. "The Best Is Yet To Come" is the mid-tempo ballad that will pull at your heart strings, it's as if the Scorpions are bidding farewell to their life long fans through this song, all the while telling us it's alright that they are really saying goodbye.
If I were to recommend just one Scorpions album to a friend, it would be "Sting In The Tail"... this is as perfect as it gets for the Scorpions. New Scorpions fans should start with this album and work their way back through the Scorpions catalog of albums. If well written and incredibly played Hard Rock and Heavy Metal songs are what you are searching for... you have found it here with the legendary Scorpions and "Sting In The Tail". This by far, is my "Heavy Metal Album of 2010"... and simply a complete listen in how Old School Heavy Metal can truly stand the test of time.
What's great about it: Every song. Honestly. Klaus Meine on vocals, all the music.
What's not so great: There is nothing wrong with this album. Honestly.

A diverse Rock 'N' Roll listen from Bret Michaels!
on July 11, 2010
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
Bret Michaels brings some Hard Rock, Country Rock and a Club Mix song to the Rock 'N' Roll table with "Custom Built". It's a diverse listen into the Rockin' mind and soul of Bret Michaels... he has made an album of songs here that are well worth giving an approving nod to.
Just don't expect the Hard Rock sound of Poison to explode from "Custom Built", just expect songs that are mainstream accessible and pretty memorable at the same time. Bret Michaels can sing Country, he mixes in his flare for Country Rock almost seamlessly. The huge hit "Nothing To Lose" with Miley Cyrus is here, yet "Rock' N My Country" and "I'd Die For You" are two songs that are even bigger hits for me.
I don't personally care for the Club Mix of "Go That Far", still there certainly will be fans that will. I just don't see this song "fitting in" with what "Custom Built" is actually "built" on.
Fans of Bret Michaels should embrace "Custom Built" and Hard Rock fans with an open mind for a diverse detour of good ol' Rock 'N' Roll might just jump up and down to "Custom Built" as well.
What's great about it: Just good well written songs that are Rockin' diverse!
What's not so great: The Club Mix - "Go That Far" just doesn't do it for me.

Redemption is a Progressive Metal Band to watch!
on April 3, 2010

"Snowfall On Judgement Day" is an enjoyable listen in quality Progressive Metal. Each song is well written lyrically, with incredible musicianship throughout. These songs are layered, with all the ambiance and textures one can expect from a Progressive Metal Band of substance.
The vocals are not over the top. A very tight and cohesive band is Redemption. Fans of Dream Theater, Queensryche and Coheed And Cambria should be very enthused by "Snowfall On Judgement Day". I'm pleased to have purchased this album and I highly recommend Redemption to any fan of Hard Rock or Heavy Metal that is looking to expand their music listening interests.
The liner notes are fantastic, with complete lyrics and a two page band photo.
What's great about it: Excellent songs, quality musicianship
What's not so great: No Complaints.

An Overkill Classic! Horrorscope reigns!
on March 13, 2010
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
Overkill - "Horrorscope" is in my opinion, one of the top three Overkill albums, along with "Feel The Fire" and "Taking Over". The cover version of "Frankenstein" is beyond excellent, a Thrash Metal instrumental that more than compliments the Edgar Winter Group original. "Horrorscope" is my favorite song, yet each song has it's very own identity and feel. "Horrorscope" I highly recommend to all Thrash Metal fans both young and old! Heavy Metal fans should enjoy this Overkill album just as much... it's a true classic. Buying this album, from one of Thrash Metal's originators, is a smart choice.
What's great about it: Old School Thrash Metal, every song, a powerful album.
What's not so great: NO Complaints!

Mark Knopfler shines with brilliance on Get Lucky
on February 21, 2010
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
Mark Knopfler continues to embark on his successful solo career with "Get Lucky." This album of songs is a collective of characters and stories that come through the entertaining and sincere lyrics, with the music of Mark Knopfler underscoring the excellence that is "Get Lucky." Mark Knopfler shows why he is the complete musician through his song writing, lyricism, guitar play and vocals. "You Can't Beat The House" has a sliver of the Dire Straits sound from years gone by, a bluesy Rock song that blends in well on this album. "Get Lucky" is an album to own for Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits fans alike. Classic Rock Music and Easy Listening fans should get quite carried away by Mark Knopfler on "Get Lucky" as well.
What's great about it: Mark Knopfler, music, lyrics on each song!
What's not so great: No complaints.

A very powerful Metal album!
on February 18, 2010

Charred Walls of the Damned has founding member, Richard Christy looking really good! Tim "Ripper" Owens on vocals is powerful on each song. The musicianship is pretty tight, almost as if this band has played together for quite some time. A fantastic debut album from these guys... I hope they release more material in the future as well.
The music is Metal, with an overall feel and sound of Power Metal... American style. There is an overriding "Old School" Metal sound to these songs as well, with "Ripper" on vocals highlighting this point. A MUST buy for fans of Old School Metal like Judas Priest. Power Metal fans will surely like this album too. Charred Walls of the Damned is a tremendous Metal album for 2010.
The bonus DVD makes for great insight into Charred Walls of the Damned.
What's great about it: It's Metal, thats for certain! Tim "Ripper" Owens on vocals, every song.
What's not so great: No liner notes at all??

Darkest Day is true Death Metal!
on February 18, 2010
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
Obituary - "Darkest Day" is just a fabulous Death Metal album. Obituary really embarks on a journey of songs here that are extremely groove laden. Heavy Death Metal grooves! From beginning to end, this Obituary album is as solid as they come in the Death Metal genre. "Darkest Day" proves quite well as to why Obituary are Death Metal legends. "Darkest Day" is one of my top overall Metal albums of 2009.
Definitely buy "Darkest Day" if you are into Death Metal or any Extreme Metal at all. Heavy Metal fans should get into the grooves found on this album, quite easily.
What's great about it: It's all about the musicianship and the songs. Very, very, heavy too!
What's not so great: Absolutely nothing wrong with Darkest Day.

Wicked Wonderland Is NOT Wonderful At All.
on November 24, 2009
Posted by: Fiend

Honestly, I bought this Lita Ford CD without listening to a single song first. I do regret it. There is no resemblance to the 1980's Lita Ford sound, vocals or Heavy Metal music whatsoever on "Wicked Wonderland". The songs lyrics are centered around her personal life... too personal and unentertaining for me. I listen to volumes of Heavy Metal... this is just simply put, non memorable and unbearable for me. Buyer beware and listen to the song samples first, before making a purchasing decision on this one. This CD I sold and at least recouped some of my money.
What's great about it: The liner notes artwork/graphic design and photography
What's not so great: This is NOT old school Lita Ford, a major leap away from her glory days.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
