Ted Nugent forever Rocks with these songs!!
on January 30, 2009

On Ted Nugent "Great Gonzo's" (re-mastered from 1999), you get the incredible late 1970's hits & songs that made "The Motor City Madman" an icon of Hard Rock AND Heavy Metal. The cool plus's about this disc is that you get 3 live tunes from "Double Live Gonzo", with "Yank Me, Crank Me" being a bonus track. "Homebound" (from "Cat Scratch Fever"), is the second bonus track that is an amazing instrumental of all things heavy, Ted Nugent totally jams on this tune! "Give Me Just A Little" is the "previously unreleased" song, (from 1999), it is a heavy tune that doesn't let up, a fine addition to this reissue. Ted Nugent gets a hand on this new track from buddies Neal Schon on guitar and Jack Blades on bass. You just cannot ignore or deny the Heavy Rock accomplishments of this man, this musician, for Ted Nugent indeed was a pioneer of Hard Rock & Heavy Metal. All of these songs sound just as loud, great, and pumped up as they did going back to the mid '70's. Thank you Ted Nugent for the great music!!
The liner notes are really, really, cool. There are 8 pages, 3 pages devoted to a musical & album history of Ted Nugent. There are 4 black & white photos of Ted Nugent, along with 3 full color photos that includes the front & back covers. Music and song credits are listed, there are no lyrics in the liner notes.
What's great about it: 13 great songs, 2 bonus tracks, 1 new track, Ted Nugent on guitar/vocals.
What's not so great: Cannot find a flaw with Ted Nugent.

This is DANZIG! Real Heavy Metal, Really GREAT.
on January 29, 2009

Not only is Glenn Danzig infamous as the former front man for the legendary Misfits, he is a Heavy Metal legend on his own as DANZIG. This EP - "thrall-demonsweatlive" is a formidable Heavy Metal release that exemplifies true characteristics of real deal Metal. Danzig's bellowing and confident vocals are delivered with strong conviction, when he sings I listen. The riffs are abundant and lacquered with all the horror and spooky tendencies that they can possibly deliver. Every tune here is Metal gold. "the violet fire" is so great, it pushes forward like an earth moving machine, leaving behind a swath of Heavy Metal glory. "trouble" is without a doubt, one lean and mean Metal song that is uncoiling with every bolt of Danzig attitude and toughness. "mother" is probably the most famous Danzig song ever, the live version is just as great as the studio cut. All 4 live tunes are energy packed with Metal feistiness and heavy duty Danzig swagger. Treat yourself to some real Heavy Metal, buy "thrall-demonsweatlive". Having Danzig in your Metal collection is a fundamental necessity.
Danzig is: Glenn Danzig on vocals, keyboards & guitar, Eerie Von on bass, John Christ on guitars and Chuck Biscuits on drums. The liner notes are 8 pages that unfold to full color photos of Danzig and his band mates, captured live in concert. Now that is what I call cool Metal liner notes.
What's great about it: Glenn Danzig on vocals, studio tracks & live tunes combined, real Heavy Metal.
What's not so great: Absolutely NO Complaints.

Jet "Shine On" shines with Hard Rock grooves!
on January 29, 2009

Jet "Shine On" is a cool Hard Rock album. Jet definitely shows off their Rock and Hard Rock influences on this album. "L'ESPRIT D'ESCALIER sounds very familiar to the Beatles, it makes for an interesting instrumental start to "Shine On". "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is" sounds both vocally and musically like Lenny Kravitz. "Bring It On Back" is my favorite track on "Shine On", this song too has shades of late era Beatles, especially with the chorus and musical structure. I am not saying Jet is not an original band, they just obviously have great Rock influences that show in their music. "That's All Lies" sounds a tad like Cheap Trick, this song really Rocks. "Hey Kids" has flamboyant originality all over it, this song has a rebellious overture that makes it happen, a good Hard Rock tune. "Shine On" is a catchy Hard Rock ballad that does not register on the sappy or sad meter, a cool and memorable tune it is. Overall, this is a legitimate Hard Rock album and I see Jet continuing to make some positive noise in the world of Rock. I definitely recommend "Shine On" to fans of Wolfmother, Cheap Trick or Hard Rock in general. Good Hard Rock music is "Shine On".
Jet is: Nic Cester (guitar, vocals), Chris Cester (drums, vocals), Cam Muncey (guitar, vocals) and Mark Wilson (bass & piano). The liner notes are 12 pages of black & white photos of Jet, with song credits. No lyrics are in the liner notes.
What's great about it: 15 songs, Jet Rocks these songs well, good vocals, "Bring It On Back"
What's not so great: No Complaints.

Slayer slams it very heavy on "South Of Heaven"
on January 29, 2009
Posted by: Fiend

If you are new to Slayer, "South Of Heaven" is probably the most accessible album to listen to in the Slayer catalog. When comparing this album to the extremely fast Slayer release "Reign In Blood", the contrast is in the speed and ferocity of the music. Make no mistake, "South Of Heaven" is one very heavy Thrash album, a dynamite Metal attack of relentless riffs, leads, solos and punishing bass & drumming. The opening lead and riffs of the track "South Of Heaven" is down right eerie and clears the path for an earth shaking song. This tune sets the groundwork, the tone for the rest of the album. This is one Thrash Metal album that I can never get enough of, from a Grammy winning band that helped create and originate this genre. Definitely buy "South Of Heaven", if you are into real Metal and Thrash you will have no regrets!
The liner notes are 8 pages, with complete lyrics and song credits. Slayer is: Tom Araya on bass and vocals, Kerry King on lead guitar, Jeff Hanneman on lead guitar and Dave Lombardo on drums. As with other Slayer albums, the producer is Rick Rubin.
What's great about it: Every song, riff & solo. Tom, Jeff, Kerry and Dave really display the heavy!
What's not so great: Absolutely NO complaints.

Tiger Army is sensational! Punk Rock that is NOW!!
on January 27, 2009

Tiger Army has been around, since about 1999, and what a refreshing Punk Rock band this is! The constant Punk vibe you hear throughout "Music From Regions Beyond" is addicting, man, this album will grow on you. The first two tracks are obviously the heaviest sounding, both musically and vocally. "Hotprowl" and "Afterworld" rock heavy with sincere Punk Rock groove. "Hechizo de Amor" is a Spanish track, the vocals are sung in Spanish and the music has Latin flavor all over it. From the guitar to the percussion and bass, this song is a strong statement of musical diversity for Tiger Army. Like all the tunes on this album, it makes you move. "Spring Forward" has great lyrics, based on a moment of time and reflection. This song, like all the others, is just down right great stuff. There are no pretentious moments on "Music From Regions Beyond". The overall quality of the songs and their lack of over indulgence into excessiveness is what makes this one great album and band. In my opinion, Nick 13 is a great vocalist, song writer/lyricist and plays one heck of a Punk & Rockabilly guitar. Jeff Roffredo plays stand-up bass and James Meza plays drums, I really dig this trio called Tiger Army! If you are into the Ramones, the Misfits, AFI, or a fan of Punk Rock in general, you really have to give Tiger Army a listen and get hooked by their infectious Punk vibe! Tiger Army will prove to you that Punk Rock is still happening right NOW!
The liner notes are very cool, with 8 pages of complete lyrics, a full page black & white photo of Nick 13 and a full color 2 page photo of the entire band.
What's great about it: Every song is really, really cool. Diverse style, Punk Rock that...rocks!!
What's not so great: Cannot find a flaw here.

David Gilmour deserves many, many, listens. Great!
on January 27, 2009

Released in 1978, David Gilmour gave the Rock & Roll world a realistic, melodic and forever lasting album. "Mihalis" is one of the greatest Rock instrumental songs I have ever listened to. Honestly, this is one tune you can legitimately chill out to and yet still get inspired by. The atmosphere and ambiance of "Mihalis" has an invigorating coolness that musically overflows. David Gilmour literally speaks with his guitar on this album. You can easily see where today's "big" guitar names get some of their influence from, David Gilmour. "There's No Way Out Of Here" showcases how David Gilmour is one of a kind with his vocals. Every song on this album is tremendously established with musical Rock finesse that only David Gilmour can create. Listening to this album has me appreciating David Gilmour all the more, as well as appreciating his legendary work with Pink Floyd. If you are contemplating or skeptical about purchasing this album, take my opinion, this music is not dated. David Gilmour was ahead of the times, breaking Rock & Roll and guitar ground for what we listen to today.
The liner notes are 8 pages of David Gilmour photos, a two page full color photo collage of David Gilmour, his family and friends. Song and original LP credits are included, there are no lyrics in the liner notes. David Gilmour plays keyboards as well as guitar on this album.
What's great about it: Just a splendid Rock album, David Gilmour is all that on guitar. Every song.
What's not so great: NO Complaints.

DIO "Lock Up The Wolves" is Metal with power!
on January 24, 2009
Posted by: Fiend

DIO "Lock Up The Wolves" is a really great and powerful Metal album. Just the one song alone, "Born On The Sun" is enough to saturate your Metal senses! This tune is a classic Ronnie James Dio vocal performance, he has that keen ability to make a song so powerful. "Wild One" is a noteable DIO track, it is a song that impacts you from the onset, this song displays the heavier side of DIO. Released in 1990, this is just another DIO album, another Heavy Metal album, that has immense musical relevance to today's Metal sound. Simon Wright, who spent 7 years as the drummer for AC/DC, joined DIO on this album. The atmospheric keyboards and Rowan Robertson's heavy & cool guitar licks, compliment alongside the amazing vocal prowess of Ronnie James Dio. "Lock Up The Wolves" lends itself to be years ahead of it's time with it's power, the song structures and it's sound. Great Heavy Metal like this I truly admire, you will too after just one listen.
The DIO lineup for "Lock Up The Wolves": Ronnie James Dio on lead vocals, Rowan Robertson on guitar, Jens Johansson on keyboards, Teddy Cook on bass and Simon Wright on drums. The liner notes are immensely great, this is a 20 page fold out, with a mini full color poster of the entire band, complete lyrics, and individual band member photos. These liner notes are done the way they should be!
What's great about it: Ronnie James Dio on vocals, Simon Wright on drums, every song is awesome.
What's not so great: NO complaints.

Paul Stanley is solid on "Live to Win"
on January 23, 2009

Hey, if you are a Kiss fan, you just have to grab "Live to Win". Paul Stanley puts on a decent vocal performance, he sounds quite good actually. "Wake Up Screaming" is a hard edged ballad, with a glow of relevance to today's Hard Rock sound. "Everytime I See You Around" is an emotional, heavy ballad that rocks all over the place, Paul Stanley really gives it an extra push on vocals here. "Live To Win" is an inspiring, positive message of a tune, a great track to get the heavy ball rolling on this album. John 5 appears on 2 tracks: "Bulletproof" where he kicks in a cool solo and "Where Angels Dare", where he plays guitar and does the solo. Paul Stanley plays drums throughout this album, not too shabby. Overall, "Live To Win" is not going to blow you away with Metal, it is a good Hard Rock album that is catchy and memorable. Paul Stanley was cool with Kiss, he is still cool with "Live To Win".
The liner notes are just what you want, with 16 pages of full color expanded artwork, photos of Paul Stanley (6 photos if counting), complete lyrics, song & musician credits and thank yous.
What's great about it: Paul Stanley sounds good on vocals, John 5 appears on 2 songs, Bruce Kulick appears on bass.
What's not so great: No complaints, quite a few ballads.

A Slayer EP that is early Thrash Metal history.
on January 23, 2009
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
If you are looking for early Thrash Metal, the old school stuff, here it is. From 1984, "Haunting The Chapel" was Slayer making a bold statement in the Metal world. Never looking for commercial acceptance, no hits to be found, only mind bending, speed defying Thrash Metal fury. All 4 songs were so important to the foundation of not only Slayer's musical future, this EP was an important blueprint to the future of Thrash Metal. I highly recommend this EP to all Metal fans, especially new fans to Slayer and Thrash Metal. "Haunting The Chapel" is a listen into the infancy of this great genre of Metal and the beginning of a legendary, Grammy winning, iconic band.
Slayer is: Tom Araya on bass & vocals, Kerry King on lead guitar, Jeff Hanneman on lead guitar and Dave Lombardo on drums. The liner notes come with complete lyrics.
What's great about it: Slayer - all 4 songs - Kerry King & Jeff Hanneman on guitars
What's not so great: Absolutely no complaints.

A whole lot of great, classic Hard Rock from Heart
on January 23, 2009
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
To sum it up, Heart "Greatest Hits" is a bona fide gem of a Classic Rock album. This is a compilation of hit Heart songs from 1976 through 1980. The Wilson sisters have proved they can Rock like there is no tomorrow, still performing, recording and playing their music to this day. Ann Wilson, in my opinion, is one of the greatest female Rock vocalists of all time. Ann can Rock the song, as on "Crazy On You", then she can deliver a smooth and beautiful ballad like "Dog & Butterfly". Nancy Wilson is as accomplished a guitarist as there is, these two have combined for what has become a true Rock & Roll treasure. "Even It Up", "Barracuda", "Magic Man" and "Heartless" are legendary Hard Rock songs that not just defined and shaped Heart, these songs helped define the late 1970's Rock era. "Dreamboat Annie" is another beautiful Rock ballad that bestows the undeniable musical talent of Ann and Nancy Wilson. "Rock And Roll" performed live on this CD, is the Led Zeppelin cover song that Heart does very well, believe me, I saw them live in the late '80's, Heart rocks the house with this song! Heart is synonymous with great Rock & Roll, this "Greatest Hits" is only the tip of the musical iceberg of what Heart has accomplished. Definitely buy and enjoy this CD, it is worth every second of Rock listening enjoyment!
The liner notes are very cool, it is a 12 page fold out poster that depicts a collage of Heart and their band, with song credits. The pictures in both collages are in black and white. There are no lyrics in the liner notes.
What's great about it: Great song selection, every song, Ann Wilson on vocals, Nancy's guitar!
What's not so great: NO Complaints.
