A potent dose of Metal from Motorhead!
on February 12, 2009

A brilliant piece of Metal work from Motorhead. This reissue delivers quite the bonus material, the second disc of this 2 CD package is loaded. There are 3 bonus tracks: the 12 " single b sides to "On The Road" and "Steal Your Face", plus an alternate version of "Claw". There are 11 live tracks on the bonus CD as well, recorded live in concert from 1984. The sound quality of the live tunes are top tier, Motorhead always sounds better raw and live! The original version of this album was released in 1986. All 9 of the studio tracks are wrought with heavy bass from Lemmy and forceful riffs and leads from Wurzel and Phil Campbell. Pete Gill is on drums here, he made for a great compliment to this Motorhead lineup. This is a great album, a definitive statement in the vast Motorhead catalog. Motorhead aimed towards a more heavier, more Metal direction and kept the speed and power on high. "Built For Speed" and "Deaf Forever" are kicking tracks, these two songs underscore my points. I always admire and enjoy the vocals of Lemmy Kilmister, they are gritty, raw and raspy. Every song is vintage Motorhead style Rock & Roll, not a micro hint of commercialism to be heard. There is nothing plastic about this legendary band. You are getting a total of 23 Motorhead tunes here. You will be doing yourself a great Metal service by treating yourself to this double CD of Motorhead, plus it will serve you right!
The liner notes are extremely cool, with 12 pages of full color photos of Motorhead, a written history on the making of this album, and plenty of credits. These liner notes make for a great Motorhead read. There are no lyrics in the liner notes.
What's great about it: Lemmy's vocals & bass, every song, Wurzel & Phil Campbell on guitars.
What's not so great: Absolutely NO complaints!

Time for some retro Rock grooves with Bob Welch!
on February 11, 2009

Bob Welch, a former original member of Fleetwood Mac, made some really good music on his own back in the 1970's. "French Kiss", released in 1977, became a platinum seller and is worth the purchase plus many, many, listens. My favorite track is "Ebony Eyes", this tune is quite the Rock mover, truth be told it is one of my favorite Rock songs ever. All 12 songs are good. The overall Rock sound and mood is vintage late 70's, however, "French Kiss" has an ageless groove to it that sounds great today.
There are no liner notes at all with this CD, only the song list on the back cover of the jewel case.
What's great about it: 12 good tunes, "Ebony Eyes" really Rocks, Bob Welch and his vocals
What's not so great: No complaints.

This album is INCREDIBLE. Punk Superiority!

This incredibly important, Punk Rock album, "Never Mind The Bollocks Here's The S** Pistols" was and still is the foundation, the building block for so many Punk Rock and Hardcore bands that followed. Released in 1977, this is in my opinion, one band, one album, for the ages. This is one of those albums I would want to be stranded on a remote planet forever with. Every song, every note, all the lyrics, the Punk attitude, Punk vocals, Punk sound and angst, it is all so very incredible. I will never, ever, grow tired of this album. I not only recommend this band and album to all, I strongly urge anyone interested in this music to flat out, BUY THIS ALBUM!! Long live the S** Pistols!
The S** Pistols were: Sid Vicious, Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones and Paul Cook.
What's great about it: Every second of every song. The Punk attitude & music.
What's not so great: Absolutely NO Complaints.

Black Sabbath fronted by Dio, at their very best!
on February 9, 2009

This is one of the classic, vintage, true Metal albums that has stood the test of time. It sounds like a cliche, yet we are looking at the immortal Black Sabbath here, fronted by the legendary Ronnie James Dio. "Live Evil" has a chilling ambiance that seems to seep out at you throughout every song. After all these years, I still cannot resist this "Live Evil" album, it seems to gain Metal strength each time I listen to it. Released in December of 1982, this version of Black Sabbath; Ronnie James Dio on vocals, Tony Iommi on guitar, Geezer Butler on bass and Vinny Appice on drums, perform their melting pot of Metal. Early Sabbath tunes are on "Live Evil" as well, with "Iron Man", "Children of the Grave" and the always eerie "War Pigs". The overall sound quality is tremendously upscale, the production is unparalleled. There is such a legitimacy and historical appreciation for this Black Sabbath lineup on "Live Evil". This is a live Metal album that belongs in every Heavy Metal collection of music. If you are pondering the purchase of "Live Evil", do not hesitate any longer.... you have to own this album that in essence, carved out the path for Metal in the early 1980's.
What's great about it: Vintage Sabbath Metal, Ronnie James Dio on vocals, quality sound, every song!
What's not so great: Absolutely NO Complaints!

Extreme plays some good & diverse Rock.
on February 8, 2009

This Extreme album is catchy, the songs are diverse and loaded with plenty of melodic moments. My favorite tunes are, "Decadence Dance" and "Get The Funk Out". Both of these tunes are high spirited and hard rockin'. These songs give off that Hair Metal vibe, this really gels with the overall harmonies and melodic guitar play of Nuno Bettencourt. "More Than Words" is a very mellow acoustic ballad, this song hit #1 for Extreme back in 1991. I respect the diversity of this album, however, the heavier songs are always my favorite. Gary Cherone, on vocals, soars with his ability to cross over from heavy Arena Rock tunes to soft ballads. Overall, this is a cool album, representing a wide variety of genres. You will encounter Soft Rock with "More Than Words", Funk Metal with "Get The Funk Out" and Hair Metal with "Decadence Dance". I recommend this Extreme album to anyone who is looking for a cool album that has a diverse mixture of Rock.
Extreme, on this album, were: Gary Cherone on vocals, Nuno Bettencourt on guitar, Pat Badger on bass and Paul Geary on drums.
What's great about it: Catchy songs, semi-Heavy Metal, "Decadence Dance" is best song.
What's not so great: No complaints.

Kittie "Spit" is one tough & extremely heavy disc.
on February 7, 2009

Kittie "Spit" is one huge chunk, of an extremely heavy piece of work. If you are into Death Metal, Hardcore and Extreme Metal, well, "Spit" should be in your Metal collection. Very heavy music here, seriously heavy. The lyrics are heavy. Everything about Kittie and "Spit" is Metal, of the extreme. Morgan Lander on vocals and guitar has the attitude bellowing with unabashed aggression. Morgan's Death Metal vocals definitely get across loud and loud again. Listening to all 12 songs will have you knowing that Kittie is not looking for commercial approval, they are playing the heaviest of Metal and delivering it like a cosmic storm. I love Metal and respect what Kittie had created with "Spit". This is a disc worth exploring if you are into the heaviest of Metal.
This enhanced CD has a full screen video of the song "Brackish". The Kittie lineup for "Spit" was: Morgan Lander on vocals & guitar, Mercedes Lander on drums, Talena Atfield on bass and Fallon Bowman on guitar. The liner notes are 6 full color pages with band photos, credits and thank yous. There are no lyrics in the liner notes.
What's great about it: Very, very, very heavy. A whole lot of attitude. Tough vocals.
What's not so great: No complaints.

Cheap Trick "Silver" is grandiose, Classic Rock!
on February 7, 2009
Posted by: Fiend

This 2 disc set, Cheap Trick "Silver", (released in 2004), is a great listen and super value. Cheap Trick has a tremendous catalog of albums to choose so many songs from. All the vintage hits are here, from "I Want You To Want Me" to "The Flame". Hearing "Voices" and "Dream Police" performed live is a thrill, these songs are what made Cheap Trick such a revered Hard Rock band for over 25 years. The overall sound of this live double CD is fantastic, the live vibe you hear and feel is cool and genuine. You are getting 31 songs total, that is a terrific batch of Cheap Trick Rock to add to any music collection. Slash plays guitar, as a special guest performer, on the song "Your All Talk". Cheap Trick covers the Beatles classic "Day Tripper" with Rock perfection! I cannot compliment Cheap Trick enough for all this Rock music they have made over the years. "Silver" is a splendid live tribute that I recommend highly to all Cheap Trick fans and those of you who appreciate Rock greatness.
The liner notes are 8 pages of black & white photos of each band member, with many credits, song credits and thank yous. Cheap Trick is: Robin Zander on vocals, Rick Nielsen on guitar, Tom Petersson on bass and Bun E. Carlos on drums. There are no lyrics in the liner notes.
What's great about it: 31 songs! Quality live sound, a greatest hits as well, it Rocks!!
What's not so great: NO Complaints.

Firewind is the epitome of Power Metal, a MUST!
on February 5, 2009
Posted by: Fiend

Firewind is a Power Metal band hailing from Greece. "The Premonition" is their latest release, (2008), what a fabulous album this is! From the consistent, streaming, melodic sound to the jaw dropping guitar play of Gus G., no Power Metal fan can live without Firewind and "The Premonition". Metal fans should take notice here, Gus G. is a legend in the making, his ability to shred on guitar is so unbelievable, hearing is believing! Apollo Papathanasio is brilliant on vocals, he has a dynamic range and can lift every song to unreal, powerful, Metal heights. "Mercenary Man" is my favorite track, every song is great in it's own right, however. "Mercenary Man" just takes you by storm, the velocity of the song with Gus G. on guitar sounds so prolific, truly astounding. In my opinion, I feel it is a creative idea for Firewind to cover "Maniac", this dance tune from the '80's is turned into a very cool Power Metal song. Firewind does not overdo it on the heavy with "Maniac", actually this cover song could easily be a radio hit, if it ever received the recognition it so justly deserves. "Remembered" shines with the heavier side of Firewind, a tune that showcases the real talent of Mark Cross on drums. "My Loneliness" is a heavy power ballad that has an amazing guitar solo by Gus G. and spotlights just how talented Apollo is on vocals. Definitely make this purchase of "The Premonition", you will become an instant admirer of this band and will be jumping up and down telling your friends how great Gus G. is on guitar.
The liner notes are super cool with 12 pages of complete lyrics (except for "Maniac"), with a page for each band member, including their photos and individual thanks.
What's great about it: Gus G. on guitar, vocals, every aspect of this album and band.
What's not so great: Absolutely NO Complaints.

Saviours "Into Abaddon" is heavy, good Metal.
on February 3, 2009
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
When I first listened to Saviours "Into Abaddon", I heard instantly the early Black Sabbath and Motorhead influences. This album is heavy duty on the riffs, a fine quality about this music. Saviours plays what some regard as Stoner Metal. The Metal here is heavier, with a tad comparison to The Sword, only darker, thicker and vocally more raspy. All 7 songs are good, the lack of more songs is made up for by the time length of each song. Lead vocalist and guitarist Austin Barber sounds like he is leading a Metal charge through the dark northern woods of an ancient forgotten land. Musically, these guys have their armor, it is the hard and heavy way they play. You will find "Into Abaddon" difficult to walk away from. Saviours plays Metal the old fashioned way, no hits, no frills, just coming at you with the pound and stomp heavy!
The liner notes come with 6 pages of complete lyrics, with cool and spooky, midivil extended artwork and credits. Saviours is: Austin Barber on guitar and vocals, D.Tyler Morris on guitar, Scott Batiste on drums and Cyrus Comiskey on bass.
What's great about it: Heavy riffs, heavy all over. Lyrics are cool, 7 quality tunes.
What's not so great: No complaints.

This Slipknot release is a great Metal experience!
on February 2, 2009
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
Slipknot has been classified into several Metal genres. In my opinion, Slipknot is Metal, pure and simple. Yet, the Metal that Slipknot provides has a diverse mixture of sounds, noise, special effects and yes, the trademark heavy riffs, leads, breakdowns, blast beats, shrieks, screams and growls. What makes Slipknot " Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)" so special is the creative way the music is packaged together, the totality of the musical structure, complimented by the skillful musicianship of the band and enhanced to a level of extremity by the vocals of Corey Taylor. What Slipknot brings to the Metal table here is not vintage or Classic Metal from days long passed, this is Metal that reflects a new school of thought, Metal for the new millennium. Every song on this CD achieves it's well deserved existence, making for what I consider one of the greatest Metal albums I have ever listened to. Joey Jordison on drums is the real thing, Mick Thomson and James Root are both absolutely incredible on guitar. As a whole, Slipknot leaves no Metal ground or heavy universe unchartered with "3: (The Subliminal Verses"). Slipknot is a Metal band that takes musical chances and wins. I highly recommend this album to anyone who wants to be knocked over by amazingly creative, super powerful Metal, that no other band can duplicate.
The liner notes are done extremely well, with 20 full color pages of complete lyrics, credits, expanded artwork, 3 group photos and individual band member photos that are enhanced with abstract artistic effects. A superior job, these liner notes.
What's great about it: Real Metal by real musicians, Corey Taylor on vocals, every song.
What's not so great: Absolutely no complaints.
