Extreme is definitely back and Rocking!!
on March 10, 2009

Extreme "Saudades de Rock" is one fine Rock album. "Saudades de Rock" is pronounced "sow-dodge". The melodic Hard Rock, with the catchy chorus, led by Gary Cherone's awesome vocals and Nuno Bettencourt's brilliance on lead guitar makes for the complete listening package. "Star" and "Comfortably Dumb" are Hard Rock tunes that solidify my saying that Extreme is without a doubt back! "Interface" is a ballad that I find very enjoyable both musically and lyrically. Extreme "Saudades de Rock" should be embraced by all Hair Metal, 80's Metal and Hard Rock fans alike. I highly recommend this album to all.
The liner notes are fantastic, they are a 12 page fold out, which includes complete lyrics, a very large band photo of Extreme, credits and thank yous. Extreme are: Gary Cherone on lead vocals, Nuno Bettencourt on guitars, piano and vocals, Pat Badger on bass & vocals and Kevin Figueiredo on drums.
What's great about it: Every song, Gary Cherone on vocals, Nuno Bettencourt on guitar!
What's not so great: NO Complaints.

Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" - iconic music.
on March 2, 2009

Yes, Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" makes my list for albums that I would want to be stranded on a remote planet with. What an amazing accomplishment this music is! Futuristic, Progressive, planetary and quite ahead of it's time, "Dark Side of the Moon" can never go out of style for me. Creative and imaginative with the blending of sounds and musical structure, Pink Floyd created their own style of Rock on this album that I can positively say is breathtakingly superior to my ears. Every song, leading into the next, a Rock musical journey that I love listening to and never growing used to. "Great Gig In The Sky" moves me with the emotion that it seeps with. "Us and Them" is my ultimate sit back and clear out the mind clutter song. Pink Floyd made an album here, that I feel can never be considered dated. I most highly recommend "Dark Side of the Moon" to any fan of Rock music, of any genre, for this album reaches out to all plains of music.
The liner notes are far out, with 24 pages of complete lyrics, expanded artwork that truly fits the music, 4 pages of Pink Floyd photos and credits. Pink Floyd on Dark Side of the Moon: David Gilmour on vocals & guitar, Nick Mason on percussion, Roger Waters on bass & vocals and Richard Wright on keyboards & vocals.
What's great about it: Progressive Rock, futuristic and full of imaginative sounds - MUSICIANSHIP to the extreme.
What's not so great: Absolutely NO complaints!!

The Hold Stready "Stay Positive" stays average.
on March 1, 2009

The Hold Steady on "Stay Positive" does a fine job at writing intelligent lyrics, yet the music for me never hits enough high points for it to be above average. The musical sound, vocals and overall ambiance and texture that The Hold Steady delivers is bona fide grass roots Rock & Roll, real blue collar to me. This is not a terrible thing, it is just this album never seems to get revved up to a level where I can say it rocks. What I do hear from The Hold Steady, is an amazing influence from Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, I am most entertained by the horns and horn arrangements than anything else here. The vocals throughout sound like R.E.M. being held back, while the few riffs that do exist fool me into thinking something is about to rock musically. The musicianship is evident while I listen to "Stay Positive", I can appreciate the talents and effort for sure. I would refer "Stay Positive" to an older school Rock & Roll fan who appreciates well founded lyrics. Fans of The Georgia Satellites, very early Bruce Springsteen and early 1970's easy listening should benefit from The Hold Steady "Stay Positive", more than I did.
The liner notes are well done, with 16 pages of extended artwork and graphics, complete lyrics and credits.
What's great about it: A cool CD to hang out & kick back to.
What's not so great: Does not get over the hump for me, no catchy level to grasp.

Judas Priest "Stained Class" is molten Metal!!
on February 28, 2009
Posted by: Fiend

Originally released in 1978, Judas Priest "Stained Class" is bursting out at the seams with what I regard as groundbreaking Heavy Metal that helped define what Metal is today. I, personally feel, that "Exciter" is a song that projects a Thrash Metal speed and vibe. "Better By You, Better Than Me" is a Heavy Metal song that has an opening riff so memorable, so catchy, with it's repeated use throughout, single handedly electrifies this tune. "Better By You, Better Than Me" is loaded down with a heavy bass groove, the tapered down pace of this song makes it so hot and heavy. The bonus tracks are terrific, with the live version of "Better By You, Better Than Me" sounding great and a bit raw, which I feel enhances the song. "Fire Burns Below" is a slow, trudging, Heavy Metal treat to my ears! I really find this song to be a great example of the sound Judas Priest would eventually grasp onto with their albums of the 1980's. "Fire Burns Below" is fused together with repetitive drum beats, layered over by electric guitar leads and very clean, very sharp acoustic guitar leads. "Stained Class" in my opinion, is a Heavy Metal album ahead of it's time, a Judas Priest classic for me. Every song on this album, for me, is as great as Heavy Metal gets. I highly recommend "Stained Class", a must own for those who love all things Metal!
The liner notes are awesome, with 8 pages of complete lyrics, 3 band photos of Judas Priest, credits, and a 1 page review & reflection on "Stained Class" written by Judas Priest. Judas Priest, on "Stained Class": Rob Halford on lead vocals, Glenn Tipton on guitar, K.K. Downing on guitar, Ian Hill on bass and Les Binks on drums.
What's great about it: Vintage 1978 Judas Priest - Every Song - Bonus Tracks - Musicianship
What's not so great: Cannot find a flaw on "Stained Class".

Anthrax "Among The Living" is genuine THRASH!
on February 27, 2009
Posted by: Fiend

I really enjoy the entire Anthrax catalog of albums, yet "Among The Living" is definitely my most favorite release from this veteran Thrash Metal band. Released in 1987, this album is loaded with all the power and explosiveness of pure Thrash, the Anthrax way. "Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.)" is one heavy tune that is rebellious and fun, to actually here the lyrics for yourself would explain what I mean. "Among The Living" earns it's ferocity courtesy of the talented musicians of Anthrax. Scott Ian on guitar is, in my opinion, one of the best in Thrash Metal history. Joey Belladonna on vocals can carry a note extremely well, he is as valid to "Among The Living" as the music itself. I find Belladonna to be a Thrash Metal vocalist who is quite punctual, without compromising the heaviness whatsoever. I have the upmost respect for the vocals of Belladonna on this album. "Indians" is a great song for me, a Thrash Metal jewel of a tune with inspired lyrics. Every song here adds to the credibility of "Among The Living". Fast music, fast vocals, fast background vocals, everything on this album is fast. That's what makes Thrash Metal so profoundly heavy, the speed and it is all here waiting for you courtesy of Anthrax! I do not hesitate for a second, to recommend "Among The Living" to all Metal fans worldwide.
What's great about it: "Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.)" & "Indians" are unreal tracks!
What's not so great: NO complaints at all.

A Tesla bounty of greatest hits!
on February 27, 2009

If your Rock music collection is currently missing Tesla, this is the ideal disc to add! Tesla's revved up, energy packed Rock & Roll is catchy, melodic and lyrically potent. My favorite track is "Modern Day Cowboy", it is a heavy track that has great guitar leads and one terrific guitar solo. The vocals of Jeff Keith are, in my opinion, standout. Jeff Keith can sing the ballad and the high octane Hard Rock with equal brilliance. "Signs" is a Rock song that touches on social barriers, it's lack of being heavy is what makes this track so powerful to me. Every song is excellent, a quality mix of tunes that represents what Tesla has accomplished musically. I have always considered Tesla a Hard Rock band, yet songs like "Edison's Medicine", "Modern Day Cowboy" and "Call It What You Want" can easily be considered Heavy Metal. However, just as the Tesla song title goes, "Call It What You Want", for Tesla has always been an excellent Rock band for me! I highly recommend Tesla to all Rock fans out there looking for great songs both musically & lyrically.
There are no liner notes with this CD, however, the Rock music of Tesla is all you need!!
What's great about it: The music, lyrics, hard rockin', every song - especially "Modern Day Cowboy"
What's not so great: NO Complaints.

Tom Petty "Full Moon Fever" is all about Rock!
on February 25, 2009
Posted by: Fiend

Tom Petty, in my opinion, is definitely a Rock & Roll original. Tom Petty's voice alone is like none other in Rock, his simplicity in writing music and lyrics are what makes "Full Moon Fever" so strong in it's mood, atmosphere and texture. Released back in 1989, this fun Rock & Roll album has never let me down, always an uplifting listen. The vocal harmonies in "I Won't Back Down" are elevating and shine with the spirit of being positive about life. "Full Moon Fever", on it's own, is actually like a greatest hits package. "Free Fallin'", "I Won't Back Down", "A Face In The Crowd" and "Yer So Bad" are played on mainstream Rock radio today like they are newly released. Jeff Lynne lends a hand on producing and writing with "Full Moon Fever", I feel Jeff Lynne's talents really enhanced the overall quality with this album. Tom Petty proved to me again, with "Full Moon Fever", that good old fashioned Rock & Roll never sounded so good. I recommend Tom Petty and "Full Moon Fever" with all of the highest Rock & Roll praise I can possibly muster!
The liner notes are 12 pages of complete lyrics, credits and thank yous. Extended artwork and 4 really cool photos of Tom Petty are also found in the liner notes.
What's great about it: Tom Petty, his musicianship, vocals and writing. Every song is a winner. Jeff Lynne helped produce and write.
What's not so great: Absolutely NO Complaints.

"Thunder & Lightning" is Thin Lizzy Heavy Metal!
on February 25, 2009
Posted by: Fiend

"Thunder and Lightning" is a Thin Lizzy prize. Released in 1983, this is Old School Heavy Metal that is stupendous with every aspect of it's music. John Sykes on guitar is sensational, especially on "Cold Sweat", "Someday She Is Going To Hit Back" and "Baby Please Don't". In my opinion, the purchase of this album is worth it for these three songs alone, however, every song is incredible Heavy Metal that will engulf you. "Thunder and Lightning" to me, is one of those albums that is a perfect example of being a Heavy Metal hidden treasure. "The Holy War" is a standout song for me, it is not that it just rocks, the lyrics are intelligent, the guitar solo is breathtaking and the rhythm section comes at you with a continuous groove. The late Phil Lynott is simply excellent on vocals, he had a contagious voice that I find so unique. "Bad Habits" and "Heart Attack" are the real catchy, melodious and hooky songs that end this great album, the riffs and leads are extremely memorable on these two songs. Overall, in my opinion, this is as sound, talent fused and classic of a Heavy Metal album as you can get, "Thunder and Lightning" truly delivers on it's title. Any Hard Rock, Classic Rock or Heavy Metal fan should appreciate what Thin Lizzy created here with "Thunder and Lightning", I really do.
What's great about it: Phil Lynott on vocals, John Sykes on guitar, every song, Old School Heavy Metal.
What's not so great: Absolutely NO Complaints.

Black Sabbath "Mob Rules" rules with real Metal!!
on February 24, 2009
Posted by: Fiend

In my Metal opinion, this is such a tremendous album, a true Metal mainstay for so many years. Released in 1981, this is Old School, Black Sabbath that time cannot age. I highly endorse "Mob Rules" to be in every Metal fans music collection. Every song is enormous, with the prolific riffs and leads from Tony Iommi on guitar, I so admire this musician. Geezer Butler on bass and Vinny Appice on drums make for what I consider one of the greatest rhythm sections in Metal history. Ronnie James Dio is pure Metal perfection on vocals. Between the music and Dio's voice, this Black Sabbath lineup takes a back seat to no one. "Voodoo", "Turn Up The Night", "Slipping Away" and "Mob Rules" are songs that have that unrelenting Metal energy that does not subside. "E5150" is an instrumental that has the eerie Black Sabbath ambiance flowing over, a perfect fit for this album. "Mob Rules" is, as I see it, one of the most complete Metal albums ever made, it has the songs, vocals, Metal and lyrics. Do not skip over this Metal gem for too long, you could be enjoying it right now!
What's great about it: Ronnie James Dio on vocals, every song, Tony Iommi on guitar, Old School Metal.
What's not so great: Absolutely NO Complaints.

Great Soft Rock listening, Don Henley is superb!
on February 23, 2009
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
This is as comprehensive and complete of a greatest hits from Don Henley as you will find. Every song is just a tremendous hit, 13 songs total. The soothing Soft Rock classics "New York Minute" and "End of the Innocence" have become quite timeless for me. "Sunset Grill" and "I Will Not Go Quietly" has Don Henley stepping it up a notch on the Rock meter, again, I cannot ever grow tired of these songs. "The Garden of Allah", at over 7 minutes long, is a song about the devil visiting a major Western city, only to find he is no longer needed for any bad deeds. This song is a Rock winner for me, Don Henley definitely diversified musically here, with many of the lyrics being narrative and quite interesting, a strong Rock groove abounds with this song. "You Don't Know Me At All" is another strong Rock song that was new for this "Greatest Hits", I feel this is one of Don Henley's finest Rock songs I have ever listened to. Track 13 is "Everybody Knows", a song written by Leonard Cohen and Sharon Robinson. This is a song that Don Henley sings with a vigorous and contagiously spirited emotion. A fabulous Rock song for me, very, very, enjoyable to listen to. Overall, in my opinion, this is one far out "Greatest Hits" from a legendary Rock & Roll voice, a legendary member of The Eagles, Don Henley. I strongly urge all fans of Don Henley, The Eagles and Rock & Roll to purchase "Actual Miles Henley's Greatest Hits".
The liner notes are also super, with 12 pages of complete lyrics, credits and a full page photo of Don Henley.
What's great about it: A greatest hits, Don Henley's vocals, lyrics and musicianship throughout.
What's not so great: No Complaints.
