Kip Winger diversifies musically and succeeds!
on May 4, 2009

Forget about finding the Kip Winger from his heyday of the late 1980's. No Hair Metal on "From The Moon To The Sun" - yet you do not need it! Kip Winger away from his band Winger, shows us his diverse musical talents as a song writer, musician and vocalist. "What We Are" is my favorite tune on this album, very upbeat, plus it has the musical influence of late era Beatles, especially George Harrison, in my opinion. "Where Will You Go" is another standout track, it is a mid-tempo and emotional ballad that is catchy for me. "Every Story Told" starts this fabulous album off on the right note, this is a really cool song for me, from the background vocals to the layers of musical instruments that create a richly filled tune. "Nothing" showcases Kip Wingers vocals like you have never heard before, his tonal changes will have you hooked on this song for certain. "Ghosts" is an Instrumental/Classical/Symphonic track, whichever label you prefer. "Ghosts" really surprised me, I never thought this kind of music would be on this album, yet I respect Kip Winger for creating this piece.
Kip Winger giving into such diverse music on "From The Moon To The Sun" and creating such extreme quality Rock is why I rate this album five star. Kip Wingers vocals are tremendous, I am convinced he can sing any genre of music he wants and do it at the highest level. If you are looking for a change of pace and want to hear some truly diverse Rock music, this is the album. "Ghosts" will catch you in the middle, but again it is a beautiful piece after all.
The liner notes are 10 pages of complete lyrics (cool), with plenty of credits and thank yous. A current photo of Kip Winger appears on the back page of the jewel case.
What's great about it: Great lyrics and music throughout, Kip Winger on vocals
What's not so great: "Ghosts" is a symphonic/classical song - not a bad listen, just a surprise

Over Kill delivers TRUE Thrash Metal! A MUST!
on April 27, 2009

If it is old school Thrash Metal you are looking for, you have definitely found it! Over Kill does not disappoint, each song is as heavy as the next, TRUE Thrash Metal. This is as great a start as you can get if you are beginning an Over Kill music collection. Over Kill throughout the years have been steadfast and loyal to the Thrash Metal sound and genre, comparing "The Years Of Decay" to their other albums is non sensical, for I admire the entire catalog of albums from this band. "The Years Of Decay" in my opinion, stands out from the vast Thrash Metal album crowd, since it's release in 1989. Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth on vocals and D.D. Verni on bass deserve all the accolades. Bobby Gustafson on guitar and "Sid" Falck on drums are both tremendous players on this album as well. I really recommend "The Years Of Decay" to all Metal and Thrash Metal fans alike. New Over Kill fans cannot pass over this heavy hitter.
The liner notes are what you look for - 12 pages with complete lyrics, 4 pages of band photos, credits and lots of thank yous.
What's great about it: "Blitz" on vocals, D.D. Verni on bass, full throttle Thrash Metal, every song
What's not so great: Absolutely NO complaints!!

This is a Metal Church classic. Great Heavy Metal!
on April 17, 2009

This is a really cool Metal Church album from 1989. Old school Heavy Metal is what you are going to hear, this Metal Church album should satisfy fans of 1980's Metal & fans of Metal Church. For me, this album sounds as great today as it did in 1989! Mike Howe is the lead singer for "Blessing In Disguise" and he was sensational! This album may not be as heavy or fast as the Metal Church debut album, yet the direction Metal Church goes here is genuine Heavy Metal at it's finest. "Fake Healer" is the opening track - a thundering Heavy Metal anthem that clears the path for the remaining album that has, in my opinion, no weaknesses. "Rest In Pieces (April 15, 1912)" is a tune that pays homage to the sinking of the legendary Titanic luxury cruise ship. Metal Church "Blessing In Disguise" is a time tested Heavy Metal treasure for me, you should make it a Metal treasure for yourself as well.
The line notes are excellent, with plenty of credits, thank yous and complete lyrics. One page of the liner notes is devoted to individual head shots of each band member.
What's great about it: Mike Howe on vocals, every song, great musicians, excellent old school Metal!
What's not so great: Absolutely NO complaints!

Papa Roach delivers inspiring & heavy tunes!!
on April 11, 2009

To sum up "Metamorphosis" by Papa Roach - a great Hard Rock album that borders on Heavy Metal, with not one song to fast forward through. Papa Roach definitely relates to current times with the extremely catchy and contagious tune - "Lifeline". "Days of War" is an instrumental intro that is pure heavy stuff! "Change or Die" is a Heavy Metal track that solidifies to me, why Papa Roach is the real deal. Jacoby Shaddix is fabulous on lead vocals, I feel he sounds unique, he carries the song with Hard Rock swagger! This album has definitely gotten my attention, now I cannot resist these songs! Definitely pick up "Metamorphosis" for the Summer of 2009, if you are into Hard Rock or 1980's Heavy Metal - you shall not be disappointed!
The liner notes are 12 pages of full color photos of each band member. There are no lyrics in the liner notes. Credits and song credits are found in the liner notes. Papa Roach is: Jacoby Shaddix on lead vocals, Tobin Esperance on bass guitar, programming and backing vocals, Jerry Horton on guitars and backing vocals and Tony Palermo on drums, percussion and backing vocals.
What's great about it: Every song is worthy, Jacoby Shaddix on vocals, musicianship, catchy - hard rockin' tunes!
What's not so great: Absolutely NO complaints.

Saliva brings on the heavy with "Cinco Diablo"
on March 31, 2009

What you are getting with Saliva "Cinco Diablo" is a Heavy Metal album of tough, angst fused tunes that will surely satisfy your hunger for recent heavy music. Saliva captures some old school Heavy Metal flare with their riffs and background chorus, yet they are an original bunch, with plenty of overwhelming guitar leads and confident lyrics. Josey Scott on lead vocals has the spirited and heavy attitude that comes through loud and clear. This band has the integrity and grit that gels together perfectly with their musicianship. Saliva is one fine American Heavy Metal band, "Cinco Diablo" is a smart choice for any Hard Rock or Heavy Metal fan.
The liner notes are great, with 12 pages of complete lyrics, individual band member photos, credits and thank yous. Saliva is: Josey Scott on vocals, Wayne Swinny on lead, rhythm guitar & backing vocals, Dave Novotny on bass & backing vocals, Paul Crosby on drums and Jonathan Montoya on guitar.
What's great about it: A total heavy package of songs. "Family Reunion" & "Hunt You Down" are unreal good.
What's not so great: Absolutely NO complaints.

A true Classic Rock album from Styx that lives on!
on March 31, 2009
Posted by: Fiend

This Styx album is another one of those Classic Rock albums that just keeps getting better for me as years pass by! "Cornerstone" has the hits, yet every song Rocks! "Why Me" and "Never Say Never" are my two favorites, they are the pumped up Styx Rock & Roll that they are so famous for. "Babe" is the vintage hit ballad that signifies why Dennis DeYoung's vocals are so incredible for me. "Boat On The River" is plain and simple a fun Rock song, the lyrics are memorable and the music is feel good. This is a perfect CD to kick start your Styx collection now! "Cornerstone" was a can't miss back then, it still is a can't miss for me now!
What's great about it: Every song, "Why Me" and "Never Say Never" flat out Rock! Musicianship all over this album!
What's not so great: Absolutely NO complaints!

Thin Lizzy lives on! An incredible live CD!
on March 28, 2009

It is great to have VH1 Classic Records release "Still Dangerous - Live At The Tower Theatre Philadelphia 1977"! Thin Lizzy was such an important Hard Rock/Heavy Metal band from the 1970's, their sound helped shape and evolve Heavy Metal to what it has become today. Every song on this CD is classic Thin Lizzy! The late Phil Lynott on lead vocals and bass is terrific! No fan of vintage Hard Rock & Heavy Metal should resist hearing "Jailbreak" and "Boys Are Back In Town" live! I highly endorse the purchase of this rocking live CD from Thin Lizzy! A great CD to pick up for the Summer of 2009!
The liner notes are really cool, with 8 full color pages of live concert photos of Thin Lizzy, (16 photos counting the front cover photo of Phil Lynott), a written word about the concert and credits. There are no lyrics in the liner notes. This Lizzy on "Still Dangerous" is: Phil Lynott on lead vocals & bass, Scott Gorham on guitar, Brian Robertson on guitar and Brian Downey on drums.
What's great about it: Quality live recording, every song is a Thin Lizzy classic!
What's not so great: Absolutely NO complaints.

W.A.S.P. "The Last Command" commands my respect!!
on March 20, 2009

from Pennsylvania
W.A.S.P. "The Last Command" is a Heavy Metal album that has enormous energy, loaded with heavy riffs and guitar leads. I am a W.A.S.P. fan, I by no means want to sound bias, yet this is a classic example of just how sensational and provocative the Heavy Metal music and lyrics of W.A.S.P. truly are/were. Released in November of 1985, it is my opinion that "The Last Command" provides more Heavy Metal music muscle than many bands of this genre and time period. The bonus tracks are key, there are 7 in all, with W.A.S.P. doing a heavy duty cover of the infamous Mountain song "Mississippi Queen". Blackie Lawless on lead vocals and bass is the epitome of Heavy Metal then and now, his vocals are a focal point for me, extremely riveting. The 5 live bonus tracks are infused with an electrifying energy of all things Heavy about this band, these songs are quality live recordings. After you listen to the 3 opening songs, the captivating Heavy Metal of W.A.S.P. will have you wishing you owned "The Last Command" for the last 20 plus years! I highly recommend "The Last Command" to all W.A.S.P. fans, Heavy Metal and Metal fans and fans of quality Heavy music from the decade of the '80's.
W.A.S.P. on "The Last Command" - Blackie Lawless on lead vocals and bass, Randy Piper on lead, rhythm guitars & background vocals, Chris Holmes on lead & rhythm guitars and Steve Riley on drums & background vocals. The liner notes are outstanding, with 12 pages of complete lyrics, extended artwork, nearly a dozen full color photos of W.A.S.P. and written history behind the making of "The Last Command" and a history of W.A.S.P. as a band.
What's great about it: Every song, this is vintage Heavy Metal! Blackie Lawless on lead vocals and bass!
What's not so great: Absolutely NO complaints.

Asia "Then & Now" is super Progressive Rock!
on March 13, 2009
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
Asia "Then & Now" is a collection of 10 songs total, the first 5 songs are greatest hits and the next 5 songs are "new" songs from 1990. This superb "Then & Now" from Asia was released in 1990. "Days Like These" and "Prayin' 4 A Miracle" are two songs filled with inspiring lyrics and the vocals of John Wetton are solid and inspiring as well. Musically, these two songs are very uplifting. All 5 of the newer songs are Progressive Rock, exactly what you will come to expect from Asia. "Am I In Love"? is a soothing and musically streamlined ballad, including a brilliant orchestration and background vocals. "Summer (Can't Last Too Long)" is an upbeat song that anyone who loves Summertime will agree with lyrically, I know I do. There is not one song here that I skip over, the 5 greatest hits are as refreshing to hear now as they were to hear back in the '80's. Carl Palmer on drums & percussion is his legendary best, Geoff Downes on keyboards leaves his signature on every song with remarkable talent. John Watson on lead vocals, background vocals and bass, to me, is one of a kind. I highly recommend "Then & Now" to all fans of Rock, Progressive Rock and Easy Listening music.
The liner notes are 6 pages of credits and song credits. There are no lyrics in the liner notes. There is a small photo of each band member on the backside insert of the jewel case.
What's great about it: 5 greatest hits, 5 "new" hits from 1990, the musicianship & vocals are incredible.
What's not so great: Absolutely NO Complaints.

Cannibal Corpse delivers punishing Death Metal.
on March 11, 2009

Cannibal Corpse is going to give you very aggressive, heavy, crunching, Death Metal. That is what "Evisceration Plague" is, every second of it is pure and original Death Metal. From the pummeling drums and blistering guitars, the punishing bass and growling, screaming and scary vocals, this is Death Metal at it's most extreme and finest. Each song carries it's intensity and extreme sound and lyrics, non stop, not a nano second found here to catch your breath. If you are looking for the heaviest of all Metal genres, you have found it here, "Evisceration Plague" is really, really, heavy stuff. I highly recommend "Evisceration Plague" to all Metal fans, especially Death Metal fans. This genre has been elevated and given a fabulous boost, in my opinion, from this new release by Cannibal Corpse.
What's great about it: Very heavy Death Metal, each song is a solid crunching blow.
What's not so great: NO Complaints.
