Finally. A robot vacuum you can rely on to get the job done. The Roomba j7 + robot vacuum packs 10x the power-lifting suction and comes with unique intelligence to avoid cords and pet waste. It even understands times when you’re home and seasons when more cleaning may be needed. Compared to the Roomba 600 series cleaning system.

J7+ is super smart and will save you time
on September 25, 2021

Let’s start with the bad (because there’s not much of it to be had):
- the base station, when emptying the robot, is like a jet engine taking off. It’s loud and startling and there’s no warning beeps that the robot has docked and finished (this is why it’s 4 stars instead of 5).
- the robot will quickly get scratched and scuffed (cosmetic only).
The Roomba J7+ has a fantastic set of sensors that help it avoid things like cords. In practice, this works better in better light situations, but it also has a flashlight on the front of the device to help it spot and avoid obstacles right in front of it. It navigates around things very nicely and resumes a grid pattern around your room, cleaning and creating nice lines as it goes.
Having previous Roombas, this one is miles ahead in terms of smarts, but also: it’s very, very thorough. The room map it generated after 2 cleans was almost perfect. Even on low-light it was able to find its way around the house and avoid things that would have stalled out the lesser models.
If you’re used to Roomas already, you’ll be familiar with some of the serviceable pieces. In terms of the vacuum itself, it’s VERY quiet - the flashlight does make it a bit less discrete, but overall very impressive.
There’s a clean by room feature as well, so once it creates a map of your space, you can tell it to go clean a specific room. No need to let it roam the entire house and hope it gets the area you want (as you had to in the past), just tell it to focus on the areas that need the most attention.
You can even check out the photos of the object it detected and attempted to avoid in the app. The updates to the app have been really refreshing and made it much easier to use.
Overall, I’m very impressed with this latest tech leap, compared to other robots with similar features, the Roomba is by far the best.

This is a lightweight setup with tons of great angle options for recording grab-and-go footage.
The light is detachable and can be put/angled pretty much any which way you'd need it to go. The phone attachment is made to be expandable and lockable in multiple different angles.
The stand and weight are perfect if you're at a table/desk/etc, and there's even a flat-foot mount for DSLRs and the stand is heavy enough that it can safely hold the entire setup. So you could get a primary angle, secondary angle, and light your shoot all with the same stand that takes up less than 2 sqft.
The light itself has good battery life and good throw and coverage for something the size of a smartphone. The three options for light temperature (cool, warm, mix) are paired with variations in brightness level, so you can quickly dial in your lighting setup.
All in all: if you're getting started or need to upgrade your space from bare-bones basics, this is a great toolkit. The only other thing you might need is a lav mic.

Highly Capable Dual Work/Gaming Machine
on August 2, 2021
Posted by: NickAtWTF
from Fort Collins, CO
I'm not going to do a deep dive on the FPS stats; other reviewers have done a capable job of defacto benchmarking. It games well and I was able to run max settings happily on almost every game in my library.
Across a few lengthy gaming sessions, I had a very favorable experience of the HP Omen, comparing to my slightly older ASUS ROG 17" laptop. My daily work is conducted primarily on a 16" MacBook Pro.
From a practical perspective, if you're looking for a discrete gaming laptop, this is one of the best options on the market right now. It's lighter and has a sleeker surface area than many other gaming laptops... however, the laptop itself is still pretty heavy. When you consider you'll also need to pair it with a cooling pad, an extended gaming session on your lap may become uncomfortably toasty and heavy.
Physically, the number and location of the ports on the device are generous and well-thought-out. All the heavy-hitting attachments can be grouped on one side, allowing for easy cord management. If you're a streamer you'll enjoy the extra ports to connect your streaming setup as the internal webcam is only 720p.
The trackpad is large and generous and the wrist deck is wide and comfortable. The keyboard is spacious with large keys that have a solid feel to them, backlit by colored LEDs in 4 different zones (there's a lighting control that allows you to use preset patterns, animations, and even design your own). It's an odd choice to have placed them in zones instead of individual keys, but I imagine this was a measure designed to reduce weight and reduce the likelihood of required service.
The display is bright and clear with vibrant colors and can be positioned in a wide array of angles. As another reviewer noted, the screen feels significantly less sturdy than the rest of the device. I can only assume this was because they were trying to save weight. The display itself is on par with other modern gaming laptops. As you might have guessed, there's no touchscreen or pen support included.
The included 1TB SSD is blazing fast and everything in my gaming library loaded accordingly - with haste. The discrete graphics card means the 16GB of system memory isn't a real issue, although I wish they'd have included 32GB just for bragging rights and longevity.
The inclusion of wireless AX in addition to a physical networking port is fantastic and helps eliminate lag no matter how you are set up.
If your intent is to utilize this laptop as a dual-function work/play device, the screen is reasonable for almost every workplace application you'd want to run. The discrete graphics card performance was impressive; I was very pleased with the gaming performance overall and I didn't run into any issues that took me out of the game (flickering, lag, graphical oddities).
The in-computer Bang & Olufsen audio/speakers are just fine; considering most folks will want to headset in, especially with the propensity of fans to kick in right when you don't want them to, they're often an afterthought... but I found they had decent quality and loudness in general play, and more than sufficient if you forgot your headset and/or external speaker setup.
Gaming laptops often come with a suite of specialty management software to tweak hardware performance to your needs. HP's OMEN Control Center is one of the better suites I've seen and there's even a physical key to access it. The ability to swap between graphics settings based on needs is useful - and having this degree of control and performance visibility is gratifying. Overall the social/gaming aspects of the HP Omen software seem like an unnecessary inclusion in an age of Discord, Twitch, Steam, and Windows Gaming Center.
Battery life when on full-on gaming mode: not spectacular... you'll want to be plugged in; on maxed-out settings, pretending I was plugged in, I lost about 25% per 30 minutes. The recharge cycle seemed to be pretty fast, but still, you'll want to operate plugged in most of the time. When optimizing settings for battery life, there was less of a hit to performance than I expected and the battery did last slightly longer, though it wasn't a total game-changer.
Heatwise: the design of this laptop led my (righty) mouse hand to get baked every so often. A slightly wider cooling pad + lap desk combo would prevent that, but... at what point do you opt-out and head back to the desktop?
Ultimately, I was thrilled with everything the HP Omen had to offer, it's a great combination of performance and portability. If your intent is to do your work and play on the same machine, this laptop is a really great option for you.

Wait For SanDisk to Make A Better Physical Design
on July 29, 2021
Posted by: NickAtWTF
from Fort Collins, CO
I used to love the Western Digital USB thumb drives. They had such easy functionality - they were sturdy without being stiff, light without being flimsy. You never had the feeling you were accidentally going to break the thing. I also really liked their book series of portable drives.
SanDisk won me over with their Extreme Portable SSD series which has a much nicer feel and much smaller surface area over the WD Book series, no moving pieces, and great design/UX with space for a clip or keychain hook, so when I heard SanDisk was doing USB-C flash drives, I was PSYCHED.
This SanDisk flash drive is fantastic from the perspective of having a HUGE storage presence and the ability to connect easily to phones or tablets because of the USB-C interface. I've been hoping for a really good USB-C flash drive since Apple made USB-C ports standard on MacBooks and it seems like the market is finally catching up.
In terms of a flash drive: it's fast and connects easily without any need for additional software or drivers or anything else. It's good to go.
In terms of the physical design: I nearly broke the thing several times just trying to get the "slide" to work. Because of how the retracting USB-C port works, you have to grip the side or the back, and there's no real "grip". I suppose you could just leave the USB-C port out, but... since these tend to get shoved in pockets and such, not the best option. I still haven't figured out how to do this well. The lack of an included keychain attachment also is a huge gap as these can sometimes make tricky/sticky physical interfaces a lot easier to manage.
While transferring large files over time, the flash drive also generated a LOT of heat. As in: it was physically hot to the touch after only 15 minutes of use transferring 2 multi-gig files.
All in all: wait for a different physical case for this model. It works exactly as you'd expect a flash drive to work, but the physical limitations of the design are just so frustrating you'll probably wish you'd spent your money elsewhere. When SanDisk brings this flash drive up to the level of design as the rest of their smaller drives, dive in without hesitation.

You've found it: a USB lav that will SAVE you time
on June 18, 2021
Posted by: NickAtWTF
from Fort Collins, CO
The TL;DR version: yes, this is the USB lav that you are looking for.
Samson is my go-to for wireless lav mics when you need quality audio that is suitable for podcasts or other simple standup video production, but I've almost always had to use some sort of fixed camera setup requiring my DSLR... hooking into a laptop to record was always too clunky or required in-software settings swaps that then later had to be undone... and if you're trying to record + produce in the same short window, good luck unless you're willing to drop several hundreds of dollars on equipment.
The problem in the past has been that USB wireless lavs were so stupidly clunky or didn't work, or to facilitate the use of a wireless lav to your laptop/iPad/iPhone required dongles and no end of settings hoops to jump through. I've even resorted to just using my Yeti Pro to keep things simple and dealt with adding the noise filters in post.
No more. Samson's XPD USB Wireless Lav + USB-C to USB-A attachment, plug it in, turn on the lav, pair it, done. Seriously. I was recording with stellar audio quality within 5 minutes of unboxing on both my MacBook Pro and my iPad Pro.
Gamechanger. That has never happened before. No complicated setup. No weird setting swaps or driver installs or a jumble of horrible cords. Just plug it in, set ONE setting in your primary audio input, confirm your levels, and go.
I only wish they'd included a USB-C adapter in the box (they include a USB-A extender in case your USB port isn't angled for easy use), but other than that... it meets all the promises they make in the description:
- range is excellent, with minimal interference even in a crowded space like a mall
- gain adjustment inside the lav is identical to other Samson lavs
- the lav utilizes AA batteries (2 of them) and the USB receiver requires no batteries
If you need quality audio for quick standup video productions and/or want to get into fast spot interviews without having to sell an organ to afford the equipment, this is the right route for you. WAY better outcome than a shotgun mic and pairing this with your iPad or iPhone is infinitely more portable than lugging around a DSLR rig.
Samson's XPD wireless lav gives you a great option to save you time and frustration, which means you'll be able to produce more great content.

Great starter laptop for students and new grads
on June 18, 2021
Posted by: NickAtWTF
from Fort Collins, CO
Dell’s Inspiron 7000 2-in-1 14” is a very good starter laptop computer for students, recent grads, aspiring creatives, or light gamers on the go.
Other reviewers have commented on the rather minimalistic unboxing, and I for one was super thankful I didn’t have a boatload of plastic nonsense to throw away on unboxing (most of it cannot be recycled anyway). The trash was minimal and it’s a pitch-perfect approach for the audience of this particular laptop.
The hinge design is actually one of my favorites I've seen in 2-in-1s lately. It's both smooth and substantive all at once - and comparing to a tablet+kickstand+keyboard combo (like the Surface), you'll love the ability to change the angle of the computer without it falling over and/or forcing awkward angles. It feels both lightweight and stable, which is a surprising rarity for 2-in-1’s, and Dell doesn’t disappoint here.
There was a minimum amount of pre-loaded nonsense, which is a time-saver very much appreciated as my family’s IT person who regularly sets up new devices. Out of the box, it was good to go within about 30 minutes of setup time which seems to be pretty normal these days on Windows machines. The battery life so far has been outstanding. I haven’t needed to try out the Express Charge™ options, but it’s nice they’re included.
I really liked the advent of the mechanical webcam cover, what I did not like was the comparatively low quality of the ONLY cam on the computer — too low of a quality to allow for facial recognition (which is probably why they included the fingerprint reader?). There is no back-facing webcam like you find on laptops in the 14-17” range, and I don’t really want to attach an external webcam, but it’s “good enough” if you’re just doing video meetings with your team/cohort. The fingerprint reader also makes a lot of sense in a world with masks in classroom settings, where this laptop is likely going to find a huge amount of viability.
The touchscreen is responsive and works well with the Microsoft pen stylus, and it has a magnetic attach point for the pen on both the left and right sides of the screen. The touchpad is a nice size and has no weird pressure points, the keyboard is also nice to type on — no surprises there (for work laptops you don’t need crazy high-end, you just want it to do its job reliably, and it does here).
The brightness of the screen and viewing angles are very good and they’re telling the truth about the minimal bezel. You won’t get crazy resolution out of this device or 4K (not really important in the context). You WILL get versatility and battery life, which is important in a laptop for students and new grads.
The placement and number of the included ports (USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, and MicroSD) are also very good and support almost everything an aspiring creative will be using. The inclusion of Wireless AX/Wi-Fi 6 alongside a generous 512GB SSD HD virtually guarantees this laptop could survive an entire HS or College stretch.
I have no complaints about this laptop at all - it’s exactly what it should be, and in the context of a starter laptop for a student, or a recent grad’s first computer, or a creative work laptop or portable “good enough” gaming machine, it’s a very good option to consider.

Best for smaller spaces, loud + hot
on June 15, 2021
Posted by: NickAtWTF
from Fort Collins, CO
Probably perfect smaller, uncluttered space (closet) that you don't visit very often.
To test the humidifier, I left it running on high in a basement room that was roughly 400sqft overnight. My portable humidity meter was at 56% and I left the device running for approximately 12 hours. Checking the next morning, the humidity was up to 58% (to be fair, this was an improvement vs other areas on the same floor that read higher). and 400sqft is on the upper end of room size recommendations.
The tank had about 1cm of water inside, so clearly it'd been working and in a smaller space no doubt we'd have seen a reduction in humidity levels. The top front was warm to the touch, which was a bit concerning (and all over the instructions it says do not cover/put anything on top of it - this is probably why).
Pros:
- portable with good handholds, not super "light" so it won't get accidentally knocked over, but not heavy enough that you'll break a sweat taking it from room to room
- tank is super secure and easy to remove + clean - no accidental leaks or frustration while cleaning
- super-easy controls with timer settings and high/low mode, plug it in and it's ready to go
Cons:
- LOUD - louder than most air filters on high mode. On low mode, approximately the same as an air filter. "Whisper quiet" is only really true on low mode
- gets warm - especially running continuously
- no on-device humidity meter - seems like a necessary inclusion for the price point
- no auto-shut-off when the target humidity level has been reached - again, seems like a necessary inclusion for the price point
If you need a bare-bones dehumidifier for a small room or bathroom with a small footprint and don't mind the sound or won't be present while it runs, this is probably the device for you. If you need more nuance, you'll want to upgrade to a larger device with more features.

Small and quiet, easy to see status at a glance
on May 18, 2021
Posted by: NickAtWTF
from Fort Collins, CO
Air filters can make a world of difference in allergy season, and I've tried a ton of 'em from the simple ones to the craziest ones.
Filtrete makes some very high-quality filters, and my experience with this particular air filter is pretty good so far.
A few metrics that stand out when shopping for air filters are size/footprint, ease of use, noise, cost over time, and throughput + filtration.
Size: this one is the size of a paper shredder. Not too large, tucks away comfortably in a room without a lot of fuss.
Ease of Use: the app interface is a little annoying; the ONE thing you want the app to do is alert you when you need to change your filters and/or alert you to issues that you don't know about. Other than that, the app/wifi interface is a nicety and not a necessity. Setup would take 2 minutes without the app stuff. With the app stuff, setup takes 10 minutes and multiple tries plus an account setup, etc. The device itself is probably one of my most favorite interfaces I've seen yet: it shows you the air quality index right on the device, along with easy color coding so you don't have to be right next to it. Maybe not a necessity for everyone, but nice to know what lowers your indoor air quality and how far away those activities reach, and how quickly things go back to normal.
Compare/contrast to things like the Molekule or larger BlueAir filters with minimal interfaces and indicators, fine but not all that helpful. This Filtrete Air Purifier is like having a portable indoor air quality meter that also cleans the air so you can get kind of scientific about your methodology.
Noise: very, very quiet most of the time, ramps up as needed.
Cost Over Time: you want to watch for filters that have shared shapes and/or are usable in multiple devices (because it lowers the cost for replacement vs single-device and/or specialty filters). Filtrete filters tend to be multi-purpose and that seems to be the case here, so expect your costs for filter replacement to be about average.
Throughput + Filtration: I was impressed by the difference this made in a somewhat dusty room in a short amount of time. The airflow throughput was impressive at the highest settings and even when operating on low/quiet mode - the throughput was good.
All in all, very good with or without the app.

Pulls Hair Non-Stop, Trims Too Short
on April 4, 2021
Posted by: NickAtWTF
from Fort Collins, CO
I get my hopes up every time for these new electric trimmers and I end up disappointed every time.
Let's start with the basics: my kiddo winces now when he sees this trimmer, because it pulls hair. I tried it on my beard. Pulls hair. Cleaned it, shook it out, realigned it... pulls hair.
Worse: the attachment is off by one setting. So a #3 is a #2, even though it's a cool and easy-to-use dial system that easily attaches, the fact that it's not quite right means you end up with a closer trim than you wanted.
The cap for the trimming blade cannot be removed easily without also popping off the trimming blade and having to reattach it. The charging cable is some non-standard thing and it comes with a base so you can display it proudly instead of shove it in the utility drawer like you're likely to. The whole thing is overpackaged and encased in see-through single-use plastic rather than any sort of recyclable materials... skip this.

Designed for a life with less cleaning, the DustMagnet 5210i air purifier catches 99% of airborne dust before it settles on floors and surfaces. Independently tested for performance as part of the AHAM Verifide Program for room air cleaners, for a Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) of 154 cfm for smoke, 173 cfm for pollen, and 153 cfm for dust. Recommended for small to medium rooms like a guest bedroom, home office, or dining room, the 5210i completely filters room air about every 12 minutes (approx. 5x an hour at 238 ft) on the highest speed. Patent-pending DustMagnet technology powerfully attracts airborne dust particles like a magnet. Two air intake points and a unique airflow pattern create a vortex effect in the room to capture dust before it settles. A stream of negatively charged particles clusters airborne dust particles, making them easier to capture. Once inside, the particles stick to the positively charged pre-filters like a magnet. Equipped with HEPASilent™ filtration technology to kill germs and effectively trap 99.97% of airborne particles like allergens, dust, pollen, pet dander, viruses, and more down to 0.1 microns. Plus, activated carbon is integrated throughout the filters to absorb light household odors from cooking, smoke, and pets. Air purifier not tested against SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). DustMagnet delivers more clean air using less energy and less noise. The 5210i quietly cleans the air with noise levels less than a whisper (29 dB) on low and less noise than a normal conversation (45 dB) on high – while using less energy than a light bulb (5-22 watts) on all speeds. Designed to blend into your home like a great looking piece of Scandinavian-style furniture, the dual-use design features a convenient top surface to double as a side table and air purifier. With a design worth showing off, there’s no need to hide your air purifier, place it prominently in the room where it will be most effective. DustMagnet is equipped with proactive features such as Auto mode, Welcome home, and a five-color air quality indicator light. Set to Auto mode and the air purifier will auto-increase fan speed when pollution levels creep up (when cooking, vacuuming, etc.) and returns to a lower speed when cleared. The Wi-Fi-enabled model can be controlled from almost anywhere with the Blueair app and voice-control via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant-enabled devices. Includes one set of ComboFilters with a maximum of 1-year filter life and two permanent stainless-steel pre-filters. Noticeably Less Dust

An air filter that actually does exactly what it says it does with useful indicators and legitimately smart functionality.
I really appreciate the BlueAir DustMagnet for a number of reasons, but most of all because it has noticeably reduced the amount of dust settling in one of our dustiest rooms.
The auto-mode is particularly adaptive and does seem to kick in when a meal is being made or when pollen levels rise. Even so, the whole device is remarkably quiet. The app and other related functionality are also pretty easy to use and functional, though you can also use the DustMagnet on its own without any of the fancypants stuff if you so choose.
Design-wise: I wish it had adjustable height. If the intent was to make it a "piece of furniture" it's too low to be helpful as an end table and the surface area is about the size of a medium plate and if you want it in your bedroom, you may not appreciate the indicator LEDs next to your head.
All in all: highly recommended so far and I'm excited to see how it performs during allergy season.

Tough on bad guys. Easy on you.The Nest Secure alarm system is easy to live with every day. Just tap Nest Tag on Nest Guard to arm and disarm the alarm - no passcode needed. Nest Detect sensors look out for doors, windows and rooms. And with the Nest app, you can keep an eye on what matters.

If you leave a window open, are you able to bypass to set an alarm? Also to confirm, if you set the alarm to say you are at home but want the alarm to go off if the window or door is open, will this go off instantly or will it be the min 30 seconds?

Yes - each Detect has a button you can use to "quiet open".

You can set the alarm to go off as close as 30 seconds after a motion or open detection event has happened (it's not instant). There are 3 modes you can set: off, "at home but armed", which turns off motion detection but turns on open detection, and "away and armed" which turns on motion detection and open detection.
