This Oral-B Pro 6000 electric toothbrush with Bluetooth allows the brush to connect with your smartphone to give you real-time feedback on your brushing habits. The advanced design of the CrossAction toothbrush head surrounds each tooth with bristles angled at 16 degrees, and 3D cleaning action oscillates, rotates, and pulsates to break up and remove more plaque. The pressure sensor lights up, if you brush too hard to prevent harmful over-brushing and there are 5 modes and a timer to help you brush for a dentist-recommended time.

Do I Brush My Teeth Better Than You? I Do Now.
on May 11, 2017
Posted by: NickAtWTF
Quickly list for me, if you will, 10 things you wish were "smart" devices. I'm gonna bet a toothbrush doesn't make the list. Even so, you ought to give this one a try, here's why: everybody skimps a little on certain habits sometimes. Now your toothbrush can call you out on it. The app is pretty slick and well-designed, without the usual clunkiness associated with "omg, why is this thing bluetooth enabled?"-type devices. I know it sounds totally silly, but beyond the "numbers geek" fun factor, it has sensors that make immediate feedback pretty useful - especially if you brush harder than you should.
Even better - you can track which sections of your mouth aren't getting the attention they need. You can earn badges for keeping good care of your teeth. Your dentist can work out a specialized care plan that your toothbrush then knows about and helps keep you on top of.
Cool factor: you can change the LED lights on top to whatever color you want. The battery is inductive and seems to last just as long as any other electric toothbrush I've had while also charging in a reasonable amount of time. The plug-and-go travel case is also pretty awesome.
Useful: the heads aren't as bulky as some of the competitor's heads - meaning a lot less waste goes into the trash. Also, the heads are swappable, and in theory, more than one person could use the same base.
Two big negatives: 1) this is the noisiest toothbrush I've ever used (I've used Sonicare in the past - this is easily twice as loud). 2) the "area detection" requires some sort of special suction cup which isn't included in the box (to mount your smartphone to the mirror so it knows which section of your teeth you're brushing). Without this, it's kinda awkward, holding your phone out so it sees the right angle, etc.
Overall - if you're a data geek or have kids with smartphones and bad hygiene habits, this toothbrush is a must buy. For everyone else: it will make you a better brusher, probably, and since most electric toothbrushes are about this same price anyway, I'd drop the extra money on the extra features.

Loads of Sound Packed Into a Small Package
on April 25, 2017
Posted by: NickAtWTF
My first thought on unboxing was, "Oh great, this is gonna be a tiny little narrow-range speaker with a tinny sound and crackles on max volume."
Nope. Totally deceptive: this speaker has DEPTH. It's like the whole thing is a resonance chamber... it pumps out audio much louder, clearer, and with better frequency range than your smartphone on speaker mode, in the same form factor as a small pack of mints.
This will be my go-to device when I need to fill a conference room or small classroom with mood music.
I love the cable-less USB recharge capability (at least, until everybody swaps to USB-C), the form factor is nice, the whole package is very clean - but the lack of more than 2 buttons was kind of obnoxious.
There's a slew of button combinations that comes from those two buttons and the timing on each that equates to various functions like "unpair" or "pair" or "turn off/turn on" or "answer call". Obnoxious enough that you can't learn it? No. Obnoxious enough that if you're otherwise distracted in the first 3 months of ownership and you don't have a manual handy? Yeah, you might push the wrong button or something silly.
Overall: worth your time and attention if you bike, run, or otherwise need your own personal soundtrack (in a form and sound factor that will NOT make you feel silly or burdened).
In fact, this would probably be perfect for Cosplayers or LARPers... the clip is sturdy and has enough strength and give that you wouldn't worry about losing it or where you'd have to clip it - and you could load up another device with pre-programmed sounds, integrate this into your cosplay, and you'd have really loud, attention-grabbing SFX right there with you.

Excellent Bluetooth Speaker, Horrible App Support
on March 29, 2017
Posted by: NickAtWTF
As far as bluetooth speakers go, this one has amazing sound clarity, volume, and battery life. It charges quickly and pairs well and fast, staying connected with a minimum of issues. The extra bass mode is fantastic and certainly carries the oomph of a much larger speaker.
My only complaint is that this speaker is best for party mode. It features an LED ring around the primary facing and two strobes. These lights seemly cannot be turned off (there is no physical button to do so) except through an app you must run on your smartphone. The SongPal app is rated 2 stars on the App Store at the moment, and once you open it, it's clear why. The app can't connect to the speaker, a setup protocol is required, and it doesn't seem to recognize that you're already connected to the speaker in Bluetooth mode. It's not clear if you can shut off the "party mode" lights or not as I was never able to get it to connect after several attempts.
I haven't tried splashing the speaker with water, although it's clear from the housing near the charging port that the product is water resistant. Sturdy and built well, but not prohibitively heavy - it's the right size to join you at the pool or at the office (provided your coworkers like to party if you can't get the SongPal app to work).
Ultimately, this is a really, really nice bluetooth speaker - and if you just leave it as-is, it's pretty darn cool. But if you had to put it in a business setting where LED lighting effects and strobes aren't going to fly, you might want to test out the SongPal app in store before you go much further.

A nice little charger for active folks on the go!
on January 3, 2017
Posted by: NickAtWTF
My constant lament while traveling was just how many dongles, cords, etc... I needed to keep my relatively few devices charged. Worse: if I worked out for a good clip or tracked my heartrate for a bit, my watch would die before I had a chance to close all 3 rings at the end of the day!
Enter Belkin's power pack. I've used and have liked their other packs, but one that eliminates the need to have YET ANOTHER CORD? Awesome.
Charged + recharged quickly. MicroUSB makes interchanging cords an easy thing if you lose the original. Longevity/rating of the battery is a definite plus. Connectors are good and solid. Doesn't add too much weight to my minimalist pack, especially considering it removes both the USB apple dongle and the old powerpack I was using for just my phone recharges and the container I used to keep everything organized.
This has easily earned a spot as my go-to charger when working from anywhere that available plugs are rare.

Great bluetooth headphones
on November 30, 2016
Posted by: NickAtWTF
First and foremost: great sound and good sound isolation. Lightweight and stays out of your way. Easy to pair and minimal fuss when it comes to wearing out and about, you don't look silly.
I couldn't figure out how to activate Siri, but since I use "Hey Siri" or the button, it's not a huge deal.
The battery life seems to hold up really well. Audible feedback is really good.
Why 4 stars? Charges only via USB connected to computer... and guess who just got rid of all their standard USB ports? So now I not only have to carry around a dongle, I have to carry around a short USB cord to attach to that dongle to charge the headphones.

A decent, if sluggish, Windows tablet
on October 13, 2016
Posted by: NickAtWTF
This Acer Switch One is a definite upgrade from previous models, but definitely struggles in a few key areas (as far as tablet/netbook combos are concerned).
Battery life: standby/sleep was close to about 3 days without a charge with minimal use in between charges on power conservation mode. Takes a long while to charge, seemed to be about 4 hours to reach full charge.
Screen: the screen was plenty bright and was very readable.
Sound: forget about it. The speakers on the back are tinny, tiny, and not very loud. Be prepared to plug in some headphones.
Touchscreen: works as expected and is very accurate. Did not try a stylus with it.
Balance: this thing is not balanced to be a laptop when connected to the keyboard. It WILL tip over on you (because all the guts are in the screen). Still, it has a nice hinge and will tilt exactly to where you want it to go, so you can balance it well (it's just if you get bumped by kids or whatever...)
Keyboard: the keys are totally flat, not bowed in the middle, which increased fatigue on my fingers. Also, not backlit, so... good luck typing at night. Slightly weird layout (at least, coming from other smaller keyboards like the Surface Pro's, you'll notice some accidental strikes).
Touchpad: run of the mill. Nothing fancy, nothing terrible.
USB: one port, on the keyboard dock. MicroUSB on the tablet itself.
Processor: Will it Word? Yes. PowerPoint? Sure, if you keep animations to a minimum. Excel? If it's a big sheet, go make some coffee. Anything fancier, like Photoshop or Illustrator and you're bound to get frustrated and start pining for your workhorse.
Storage: 32GB. Forgivable since 99% of everything is in the cloud. Expandable with miniSD card; I don't have one handy, my concern would be speed.
Cameras: Yeah, it has front and back cameras. The quality level is on par with a 2006 smart phone. You'll get away with a low-grade Skype if you're OK looking like you're on the set of the Blair Witch Project.
For Students: High School - sure. College? Hmm. Maybe for the Freshman Burner computer (the one you know is gonna get stolen sometime).
For Work: If all you're doing is email or data entry or managing someone's calendar, sure. If you need to do something more substantive? Skip it and go for the Surface Pro.

Tough on bad guys. Easy on you.The Nest Secure alarm system is easy to live with every day. Just tap Nest Tag on Nest Guard to arm and disarm the alarm - no passcode needed. Nest Detect sensors look out for doors, windows and rooms. And with the Nest app, you can keep an eye on what matters.

If you leave a window open, are you able to bypass to set an alarm? Also to confirm, if you set the alarm to say you are at home but want the alarm to go off if the window or door is open, will this go off instantly or will it be the min 30 seconds?

Yes - each Detect has a button you can use to "quiet open".

You can set the alarm to go off as close as 30 seconds after a motion or open detection event has happened (it's not instant). There are 3 modes you can set: off, "at home but armed", which turns off motion detection but turns on open detection, and "away and armed" which turns on motion detection and open detection.
