Will It Blend? Heck Yes.
on December 4, 2017

from Fort Collins, CO
OK, I'll admit. Since high school when those "Will It Blend" videos came out, I've set my geeky little heart on owning one of these Blendtec blenders. And I can honestly say that: yes, it is exactly as awesome as you think it is.
Unboxing: everything is recyclable. Everything. There are 3 pieces of packing that went into the box, along with 3 supplementary materials - one of which says "YOU'RE NOW IN POSSESSION OF THE WORLD'S BEST BLENDER." They're not kidding. The cord even has its own velcro strap to keep it contained.
Setup: There are only 4 pieces to the blender including the base. The base (motor/controls) is not super heavy as one would expect. It's actually a decent size and weight that'll prevent tips and such, but not so heavy it'll decimate your storage area. The footing is super stable, it does not wobble in the slightest, but it doesn't take up a huge amount of real-estate either. The blade and blending bucket are all one piece. Normally I'd be a little wary because every non-detachable blender I've owned has shattered at the blade/plastic connection point.
A quick note here: the detachable versions are awful. Horrible. You have to put a washer at the bottom, twist on the blade attachment, hope you got it right, and then if you didn't, you only find out after you've blended your stuff that gross rubber water and smoothie/soup is all over the base and getting into the motor.
Not a problem here. And in fact, the way the blending bucket fits on top of the motor/base is incredibly smooth. The blending bucket is made out of very sturdy plastic that has a little give to it, so I'm guessing it's not going to shatter like other blenders. Even if it does, it has an 8-year warranty. When's the last time you had a blender last more than a year? Did I mention the whole thing is Made in the US? How cool is that?
In use: Unlike the videos, I decided to work my way up to blending iPhones and brooms. Something edible is best.
So we made milkshakes. I poured a cup of chocolate milk and two whole pints of frozen-solid chocolate ice cream in. Added in some chocolate chips. We keep it healthy in my house.
Anyway, I pressed the handy "smoothie" button and a countdown timer started. About 45 seconds later (while the blender varied the speed to avoid air bubbles and such), the whole family was enjoying chocolate milkshakes that were stupidly smooth.
"Honey," I said, "Can you grab me the broom?" She politely declined, so I moved on to try making some soup instead.
There's no denying it: this is a super-powerful blender. The automatic settings make it a super-smart blender and I'm looking forward to making many more nigh-impossible yet edible combinations of liquids and solids that would rend mere mortal blenders asunder.
My only regret is that I don't have two Blendtecs to answer the final, ultimate question: will it blend itself?
TL;DR: the geeks/internet savvy in your life will love this (thanks to the amazing marketing Blendtec has done over the years). The culinary-savvy in your life will love this (thanks to the power, speed, and size). The money-savvy in your life will love this (thanks to the warranty and comparative cost). Highly recommended.

Super-Speedy, Super-Fun
on November 16, 2017

This is a fun RC car and a great way to enter into the world of hobbyist RC cars.
All of the parts (including the body cover) are removable, and Redcat Racing even has a website where you can buy additional bodies, shocks, gears, etc. There's plenty of customizability here. It's pre-assembled, but literally everything you need for hours of fun is in the box.
The battery is NiMH (no memory - woo!) and there's a spare in the box, so you can charge two before you go drive and you'll get twice the driving time.
The remote is a 2.4GHz radio - I didn't notice a way to swap channels or anything else on it, so... be cautious when operating around other cars, drones, etc... using that same bandwidth. On the radio are the standard controls you'd expect: steering knob that can be switched from normal to inverted steering, a steering trim knob, and your throttle (forward and reverse). The remote runs on 4 AA batteries.
Everything from the speed to the responsiveness of the car to the turning radius is impressive, and with about 2 minutes of instruction and a little guidance, my 4-year-old was driving this competently. It's super easy to drive; forgiving, fast, and fun.
He had it climbing over river rock, through grass, over curbs (when going full speed, the car WILL catch some air over a curb), luckily it also has shocks which dutifully keep the bottom of the car scrape-free. The throttle was responsive and make no mistake about it - the 20MPH on the box is pretty accurate. The steering was also responsive and not jittery. The range on the remote was pretty darn good (it seemed to cover the better part of our street, we haven't yet found the end of the range).
The included turbocharger had the battery ready to go in just about an hour. We ran the car through its paces for a good 20-30 minutes and didn't notice a loss in speed or responsiveness.
This is actually a realistic RC car I felt OK with my kiddo playing with. It's fast and light enough to be fun without being fast enough to be dangerous or destructive. If it breaks, the replacement parts on Redcat's website are both easy to find and reasonably priced, and many of the components look stock-swappable.
This is a solid, entry-level RC car and Redcat has a slew of other models that look like just as much fun.

A Party In A (Large) Box
on October 18, 2017

This speaker is seriously powerful for something that operates on battery power. The sound produced easily filled up a voluminous space (1500 sqft) with practically no loss in audio quality or thumping bass.
The speaker is very large; easily 2' tall x 1.5' deep x 1' wide. It can sit on its side. The handle is appropriately located and, while the speaker is on the heavier side probably thanks to the huge battery required, you'll never feel unbalanced carrying it.
The battery life is actually pretty good, although the "stamina" mode for the battery seems to drain a bit of the life out of the sound (to my ear it was the mid-range frequencies). Unleashed, this could easily provide amazing ambiance for a block party or a mid-to-large sized room.
I host a lot of events and I'm planning on utilizing this for podcast playbacks and panels at comic con.
I have the MUCH SMALLER Sony XB30 Bluetooth Speaker; it also has impressive sound for the size factor. The lights are similar on both models; the strobe and border lights are pretty fun to watch.
Bluetooth connection is quick and speedy, the "party chain" is easy to use and connects other Sony speakers via Bluetooth for fast multi-point sound. The battery life is good; it'll outlast your event for sure, but it also plugs in as well in case you need it.
You can also connect via USB, AUX (in and out), and there's a microphone port as well with an independent volume level. If you host any sort of events where you need to bring audio equipment, this is a good addition to your lineup. I'd expect to see these populating community centers and other similar venues soon.

Pure Magic. You want this Lightning.
on October 5, 2017
Posted by: NickAtWTF
from Fort Collins, CO
Ultimate Lightning McQueen is straight-up magic, for real.
The attention to detail put into this toy is astonishing - from the charging mechanism (you plug him in, the plug goes under his gas cap), to the care put into the app (there's a ton to do and Lightning gives you feedback the whole time), to the impact sensors ("Ow! That's gonna leave a mark!"), to how he handles on carpet (exceedingly well), to his headlights and taillights that actually work, to the fact that he can reverse or get a speed boost, to his idle chatter, the fact that his MOUTH MOVES when he talks, and the whole chassis moves up, down, and all around.
OK, sure, that's nice, right? Let's take it a step further: he knows if he's upside down. He knows if he's stuck. He tells you when his battery is low. He knows when you've picked him up and when you've set him down and he comments about it. He talks about what screen you're on in the app and gives feedback about what's happening inside the app, too.
This is a SLICK toy that adults and kids alike will appreciate.
He's not just a functional RC car, he's FUN to drive - he's not just a gimmicky car that "kinda works" - nope, Lightning has pep and travels well on hardwood as well as carpet. The controls are easy to learn, there's a reverse feature, a speed boost feature, lightning can also burn donuts AND drift with like two buttons. Will your kid be able to figure it out? Probably after like 2 minutes of practice (the on-screen instructions are pretty helpful, too).
He's got race mode where you combine a little app play (pit stop puzzle game) and driving him around. All in all, he's pretty open-ended - there's a ton of fun things to do with him (from watch Cars - he responds to the movie - to just tooling around driving him from place to place). He's super speedy, the battery life is darn good for an RC car, the handling is good but you'll want a significant area to play with him on (and probably padded while you get used to his turning radius). I goofed plenty and he didn't show any scratches or scrapes. I was afraid to really wreck him, but he seems pretty padded, especially around the front bumper.
If I had to conjure up a complaint, he's a little loud on unboxing (as in when Lightning is talking, the driving mechanism itself is quiet)... but I was also testing in my carpeted basement office, so the sound carried. Lo-and-behold, HE HAS HIS OWN VOLUME CONTROL. Did I mention these Sphero folks have figured out how to package magic?
The app is not clunky (as Sphero has had a ton of time to figure this out with the other products - and in fact, I'd say this app is a significant step up from the Sphero BB-8 app, which I consider to be the weakest part of the Sphero BB-8 experience).
If you or your kiddo is a Pixar Cars fan IN THE SLIGHTEST, this is the toy you/they will want to have without question or delay.

A Good Entry Point to VR
on October 3, 2017
Posted by: NickAtWTF
from Fort Collins, CO
I'll preface this with: I was 99% sure in my experience with VR I'd be that luddite falling out of his chair or blowing chunks as a result of some rollercoaster app.
Unboxing: kinda clunky, and I wish the CONTENT portion of setup had been more user-friendly, there was a lot of instructions for something that mostly relies on your phone to interface. The instructions were minimal at best and seem aimed at folks who've tried VR before in other settings or at least have some knowledge of where to go and what content to get.
Merge needs a better on-boarding process than what they currently have.
I had to take off my minimal tech21 iPhone case (I'm running an iPhone 7 Plus) to help it fit inside. The adjustable lenses were a huge plus, and the head straps were infinitely adjustable, but I couldn't figure out the triggers right away, so it ended up being a little frustrating at first.
True to form, the first app I downloaded was the Cedar Point VR app, and of course, my wife chose that moment to pop in and say something to the effect of, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"
I don't remember exactly what she said because I was too busy falling out of my chair. Classic.
The whole rig is well-designed, comfortable, adjustable, and in and of itself was pretty easy to set up; figuring out what content and where to go was the next tricky part and because Merge has no curated content ready to go, you end up going to like... Discovery and doing their stuff, which means you also sometimes have to pull the phone back out.
There's a ton of Shark Week stuff, and a ton of gimmicky content right now, but the library of titles will grow.
I've always wondered why you'd want/need a specialized device when most phones have insane graphics chips, cameras, retina displays, and almost everything else you need to be immersed in VR.
Merge solves that problem and it's glorious (just remember to take your vertigo medicine first and lock your office door so you can't be messed with).
All in all: a solid purchase and good entry point into VR if you're OK with limiting your content to whatever is available on your phone's ecosystem.

Cool Idea, Needs Work
on October 3, 2017
Posted by: NickAtWTF
from Fort Collins, CO
In combination with the Merge VR goggles, this cube is a pretty sweet VR toy. I say "toy" because I'm not entirely sure the use is practical just yet.
The free "Things" demo app held a lot of interesting surprises and a lot of novelty and very interesting ideas, but I started thinking about how an augmented reality device like this would really function. Depth is still an issue (and let's be honest: nobody is good at depth perception when you're wearing VR goggles), The tracking app easily got confused with some complex twists and turns, and so motion sickness can quickly result as you try to figure out where the cube went or which orientation it's in.
I kinda wish Merge had spent more time curating content with partners rather than leaving the curation of this content to their website... and keep in mind this 4-star rating is mostly a result of the initial lack of content (so if you're buying this in the future, your mileage is likely vastly improved). At this point, we're really just waiting for content creators (and our stodgy caveman biology) to keep up.

Great Business Projector - Not So Great Wireless
on October 3, 2017
Posted by: NickAtWTF
from Fort Collins, CO
I've had a ton of different business projectors over the last few years, but this Epson family will definitely be on the top of my list of choices moving forward. Here's why:
- Image quality, color depth, brightness, and size of the projection across a small space are all amazing.
- Speed of unboxing to first chorded projection: 2 minutes (max).
- Speed of full brightness from off: 30 seconds in a fully lit room.
- The unboxing: the remote, cords, and carrying case are all easily accessible and ready to go from minute one. The carrying case is great, padded, and has a nice strap.
- Solid, accessible controls that work easily, menu items that are infinitely customizable, lots of adjustable options to change the nature, angle, etc... of the projection.
If you're considering a projector for business needs (especially if you make any sort of presentations in well-lit rooms) this is the right projector for you. YES, YOU NEED TO SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY - THE BRIGHTNESS HERE IS NO JOKE.
I have two downsides (which is why this projector gets a 4-star rating instead of a 5-star rating):
The wireless functionality is stupidly clunky. They wrote an app for this, based on QR codes and installing unsigned network profiles to your device. Why? Why? There are so many other awesome protocols out there... why is a home-grown app a thing?
Wireless functionality requires an EXTRA DONGLE which is, thankfully, included... but get this: because you have to join the network OF THE PROJECTOR, you cannot use the internet on your device at the same time and therefore it's mostly useless in a business setting. It's like the wireless stuff was thrown in as an accident.
The only other issue: the projector's fan is loud and reeks of hot electronics/burning plastic for the first few outings.
OK, so, brass tacks: will this projector do what you need it to do and do it really well (namely throw an image, contract, presentation, or something else that needs to be exceedingly legible on a wall)? Yes.
Is it worth the price tag? I'd have to say so. The image quality (color depth and brightness, as well as the size of the projection from a 5' gap to the wall) is hands-down amazing. In an office/small boardroom setting, this will make you look like a rockstar. The setup time alone means you could literally pick this up on your way to your client meeting (DON'T FORGET YOUR HDMI CABLE BECAUSE IT'S NOT INCLUDED IN THE BOX) and be projecting in a 2-minute span. I'm not even joking. My 3-year-old could get this thing up and running very quickly if he had to give an emergency presentation to his stuffed animals.

Best. Babysitter. Ever.
on July 20, 2017
Posted by: NickAtWTF
I awoke to two pairs of eyes staring intently at me. It was bright and early this morning and my kids were asking if they could "see Jeeves go".
We named the Roomba "Jeeves".
I gave a groggy thumbs up and a few loud shrieks and happy giggles later, I heard the Rooma activate with a happy-go-lucky tune.
Jeeves quietly left its dock and went about its task as the children watched intently, following it from room to room, sometimes tossing bits of paper or other detritus in Jeeves' way to test its ability to do its job.
Patiently and without complaint, the Roomba continued on its duties as the children merrily snuck along in its wake. About an hour later, having provided me enough time to prepare breakfast for the family, Jeeves reported the job was done with another happy tune and returned back to its base to relax and recharge. The children happily reported to the table ready to start the day and the floor was clean and ready for playtime.
--
Positives:
- the Roomba is super easy to assemble and is mostly prepped right out of the box. It's worth going through and examining it for the first time before you turn it on.
- the Roomba is super easy to CLEAN. You WILL spend some time maintaining the Roomba.... as the bin gets full pretty quickly the first few runs through.
- almost everything that comes in contact with dirt and grime is accessible to you to clean AND is easy to get to without tools.
- the mechanism for picking up gunk is two big rubber rollers on the bottom of the Roomba, so that means a lot of fuzz, dirt, hair, and whatever else will be picked up at first compared to your regular vacuum. As Jeev-- ...er... the Roomba cleans your home, it'll naturally pick up just the new dirt and you won't have to empty as much.
- the Roomba is a beast. I have kids, so... no judgment... but, I saw it pick up: pieces of pancake (like 1" at least), noodles, raisins, large pieces of egg, you name it. It didn't flinch. It didn't track a mess all over the floor, it just cleaned and kept going.
- the Roomba easily cleans under tables and around chairs and pretty much anywhere it can get to. It has no problem transitioning from hardwood to thick carpet and has enough clearance to go over fixed objects (like cord guards and floor mats or metallic table legs flush to the floor/carpet)
- the battery is sufficient to clean a LOT before having to recharge.
- the schedule feature is easy to learn.
- the errors and lights are easy to learn and clearly point to trouble without much guesswork. The app tells you exactly what's going on, too. You can set a remote clean if you want to.
- the setup is super easy and FAST.
- Robot Vacuum. The floor is wicked clean and WE, BUSY PARENTS, DIDN'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING BUT EMPTY THE BIN.
- the kids love it. Seriously, it's their new favorite toy.
Negatives:
- the "full bin" light came on about halfway through this morning's clean. I paused the clean cycle and emptied the bin and cleaned the contact sensors, but the light didn't turn off. I paused the clean again and cleaned more of the vacuum. Still didn't fix it. The light only turned off once Jeeves returned to its charger again. I'm not sure what that was about, but there's a SLEW of super helpful videos that demonstrate EXACTLY what you need to do to troubleshoot. Some sensors seem to reset only when reconnected with the home base.
- I mentioned earlier, you'll need to clean out the rollers and bin quite a bit at first - especially if you have longer hair or someone in the house has longer hair. If you have pets, expect to clean it out A LOT at first unless your existing vacuum is very thorough.
- can get stuck and requires your help at first to navigate. If you change the structure, shape, placement, etc of the objects in the room, it can get confused.
- bathrooms and under beds are tricky, there's a lot of objects and it seems to get overwhelmed in this space.
- they're not kidding when they say make sure home base is easy for the Roomba to get to. The first few times ours got lost because we placed it in our dining room where the nature of the room changes frequently (chairs move, highchair placement varies, etc). It always seems to be able to get back home but not without significant effort.
- I wouldn't call this a negative, but... the cleaning approach, while it learns where things are, is... interesting. It "zig-zags" through your home most of the time, rather than going in straight lines along walls and such. There's a method to its madness, but if you are used to the "get everything as clean as possible in the most efficient way before the kids demand your attention again" mode, you're not going to find it here.
TL;DR: if you're busy or just hate to clean, you need this. It's really cool and it cleans very well with a minimum of fuss.

My New Go-To Outdoor Speaker
on June 29, 2017
Posted by: NickAtWTF
Nyne's Bluetooth speaker is about the size of a stepstool or small boombox, super lightweight, and has amazing sound - it can easily fill up a large room with sound without distortion. Outdoors it performs very well. The bass is strong, I haven't found a way to do any sort of equalization on it (outside my streaming device, that is - the speaker doesn't seem to have any sort of tweaking ability).
The battery really does last a long time; I've been playing with it for a week on and off (an hour here and there) and haven't run out of the initial charge yet. It has an auto-off feature that shuts off the speaker when not in use that also helps preserve in case you're forgetful. Bluetooth pairing is fast. The location of the ports is convenient and also protected. Added bonus that I haven't seen on other devices: you can use the speaker to charge your phone via USB connection on the back. Thanks to the aforementioned rockin' battery life, your music will last the length of the party for sure.
Charging time is a smidge slow, so plug it in the night before you need it.
The entire case is rubberized and while I'm not brave enough to spray it down with the hose, getting splashed or having it out in the rain or snow probably won't be a big problem. I just wouldn't toss it in the pool.

Without Irony: Your Friends Will Be Jealous
on June 15, 2017
Posted by: NickAtWTF
I love coffee. I drink it daily, probably more than I should. For years I've tinkered with a lot of different machines. I've bought myself a mini espresso machine (which was awful). I have a simple 4-cup coffee maker and a Keurig for "fast" coffee.
TL;DR Version: Your friends will be jealous. If you're serious about coffee, like to make your own drinks, and have 5 extra minutes in the morning or afternoon to use this, go for it. It'll save you a trip to the coffee shop.
This is, by and large, the fanciest coffee maker I own and the setup fussiness in setup is the single biggest negative. From the way the machine is packaged to how many parts there are, it took 30 minutes to clean everything and another 30 minutes to finish the recommended "shakedown" brews. The second biggest negative: the instructions are not super clear - neither in to how to run anything or as to what and how and where needs to be cleaned, so I literally removed everything that could be removed to start. I had a few misfires with the steam/espresso side at first, but once you screw it up, it's easy to undo and do it the right way (just make sure you're wearing gloves the first time, haha).
However, the flip side to the long cleaning process is that you CAN remove almost everything that touches coffee or water (the one exception being the espresso downspout (not the handle/coffeepuck thing, the thing it attaches into that pours the hot water). The steamer nozzle comes off. The water reservoirs come out. Almost everything can be removed and cleaned easily. Even the (both espresso and drip coffee) filters come apart from the filter base to be cleaned.
So, how quickly does it brew? Within 5 minutes of finishing the lengthy cleaning process, I'd already made my first latte. Coffee was brewing on the other side and was finished quickly thereafter.
How does it taste? Awesome. The consistency is what I'd expect from the espresso; it's easy to get a good cup of coffee from it. The steamer/foamer works fantastic (seriously, look at that picture and consider that I officially started "using" the machine 5 minutes ago).
The instructions provide a lot of guidance as to what works well; but the design of the machine and parts is what really shines. The scoop for the espresso component exactly matches how much coffee you need to put in. Flip the scoop over and it's the tamp for the coffeepuck.
Third downside which is possibly an upside if you're not a rank amateur (this is minor, but you HAVE to be paying attention when you brew espresso): the machine doesn't automatically start and stop when you set it to brew espresso. The drip coffee side is simple, push a button and it brews and then keeps warm for 2 hours (yeah right, like a fresh pot of coffee lasts that long in your house...)
The espresso side, though, has to be turned on. Then, you have to wait for the green light to come on. Then, you push the button for the espresso drip. Then when that light turns off, you have to shut it off yourself (otherwise you'll overrun the cup). I guess this could be a "feature" because you can water down your espresso if you want, or you can correct for under/overpacked coffee in the espresso filter. But the average newbie isn't going to know to do this. The steam takes a few minutes to figure out, but once you've got it down, it's pretty simple.
All in all: if you want to be able to make your own fancy coffee drinks, this is a great machine to go with. You'll be able to make your friends jealous with just a little practice. The three downsides (initial setup time, instruction clarity, and no auto-brew option on espresso) are relatively minor, with 2 that are common among all coffee makers and one that won't bug you after the first few uses.

Tough on bad guys. Easy on you.The Nest Secure alarm system is easy to live with every day. Just tap Nest Tag on Nest Guard to arm and disarm the alarm - no passcode needed. Nest Detect sensors look out for doors, windows and rooms. And with the Nest app, you can keep an eye on what matters.

If you leave a window open, are you able to bypass to set an alarm? Also to confirm, if you set the alarm to say you are at home but want the alarm to go off if the window or door is open, will this go off instantly or will it be the min 30 seconds?

Yes - each Detect has a button you can use to "quiet open".

You can set the alarm to go off as close as 30 seconds after a motion or open detection event has happened (it's not instant). There are 3 modes you can set: off, "at home but armed", which turns off motion detection but turns on open detection, and "away and armed" which turns on motion detection and open detection.
