This release compiles all episodes from season four of Elementary, a detective show starring Jonny Lee Miller as super-sleuth Sherlock Holmes, who investigates crimes in modern-day New York City as a consultant to the NYPD and is assisted by Joan Watson (Lucy Liu), a former surgeon hired by Holmes's wealthy father to help keep the eccentric detective sober.

Last season this series opened up a bit strangely and it took awhile for me to get into the groove of it again. For one, Holmes had a new assistant and it really threw me. I'm glad to report that nothing strange like that occurs this season. There is one big change but it is a good one. John Noble. who is an outstanding actor, joins the cast as Sherlock's father. I was so pleased when he was standing on Sherlock's roof and turned around and I saw who it was.
Secondly, Holmes and Watson open together as committed partners in solving crimes. There is no more wishy washy stuff about them going their separate ways and such. They are united but they are still not romantic partners and I don't think it will go in that direction. I think that is wise as it entirely shifts the show when that occurs. Lucy Liu and Johnny Lee Miller at this point have Watson and Holmes down perfectly. Miller has down perfectly all of the weird tics that characterized Holmes in the Conan Doyle works. He is a very odd duck but indeed so was Sherlock Holmes.
As for the drug addiction episode we closed with last season with Holmes, that mainly serves to bring John Noble as the father into the show. Sherlock resumes becoming a recovering addict. We do not seem to be belaboring the drug abuse aspect of this show and for that I am thankful.
The reason this show was late entering the fall lineup is there was some football show on Thursday nights which was going to mess with its ratings. That show is now off so Sherlock will last longer into the spring this year.

Forget about any attempt at gritty realism like say for example Marvel/ABC’s “Agent’s of SHIELD”; Legends doesn’t give a rats pajamas about all that... rather it’s pure superhero fantasy mixed with a little Doctor Who-esque sci-fi (less the overt sentimentalism and annoying travelling companions) and unlike SHIELD it’s more about an unlikely team-up than getting to know the b-team.
Let’s review: Hawkman (kinda like DC’s version of Wolverine) and Hawkgirl (played by the distractingly gorgeous Ciara Renee) are a solid team all by their lonesome and then throw in Leonard Snart (aka Captain Cold) who is just frigg’n awesome (wouldn’t he be amazing on FOX’s Gotham?) along with the dim-witted but nevertheless entertaining Heat Wave for good measure and you get some endearing characters with great chemistry. Absolutely not a White Canary fan but I suppose her character adds the gratuitous martial arts skills and yes I’ll admit The Atom registers rather high on the lame-o-meter but actor Brandon Routh is just such a pleasure to watch as the super-nerdy, rich genius not to mention he lends the show some big-screen presence. Firestorm on the other hand is absolutely one of my favs from the DC canon and I’m really looking forward to seeing him let off the chain, not to mention Victor Garber as Professor Martin Stein has rapidly become one of my favorites in all of DCTV and his new companion Jay Jackson is really starting to grown on me (these two also have some great chemistry). Top it all off with a pretty cool super-villain in Vandal Savage (who gives the show kind of a Highlander vibe) and here’s hoping he’ll get his very own Legion of Doom.
“Legends of Tomorrow” is ambitious with a capital “A”, mixing genres along with what some might consider too large a cast but what it’s got in spades is: generous budget, a cast and crew that obviously love what they’re doing and ton of story potential, and yes I’ll admit I wasn’t exactly blown away by the pilot (thus the 4 stars) and yes, the bar fight with White Canary was embarrassingly lame (I blame the character) but still, all things considered, this is absolutely a show I’m gonna take a chance on by maintaining high expectations.
It’s a great time to be a nerd in general and a DC Comics fan in particular. Now we just need either A: NBC to bring back Constantine or B: CBS and CW do a Supergirl/The Flash teamup. :o)

Ash vs evil dead

I have been waiting years for this, years!! Well, a lot of us have been waiting years for this. Luckily Universal Studios didn’t let Raimi use the original cut for Army of Darkness (originally titled Medieval Dead and with a different ending where Ash uses the Necronomicon to return home but ends up in a post-apocalyptic future). For years there were rumors of another Evil Dead film, or a reboot, but since television has gotten so good, I’m really glad that this was the medium they chose to tell more adventures of Ashley J. Williams.
I watched the pilot Halloween night on Starz as was intended, and it was everything I wanted it to be. Bruce Campbell was perfection as always, it was so amazing to see Bruce back in the role of Ash after all these years, it’s almost like no time has passed. After picking up a girl and taking her back to his trailer, they “party” and to impress her Ash reads a bit from the Necronomicon, not a good idea. Never read from the book! There are tons of awesome deadites in the pilot, lots of creepy and gross moments that harken back to Evil Dead 1 and 2. I love all the call backs to ED 1 and 2, music cues and flashbacks (though there is no mention of Army of Darkness at all, maybe in future episodes but that adventure was not mentioned in this first episode). I want to say more but I won’t spoil anything either. I loved that there was more Three Stooges style slap stick humor, this just felt right at home with the rest of the films.
Ash is a lone hero, but often times his stubbornness and arrogance gets in him in trouble. Luckily for Ash, he has some help. Ray Santiago plays Pablo, Ash’s coworker who looks up to Ash and sees the potential in him to be a true hero. Dana DeLorenzo plays Kelly, Pablo’s friend and also works with he and Ash, she doesn’t really see Ash in the same light that Pablo does. We are also introduced to Jill Marie jones as Amanda Fisher, a cop who runs into some deadites and has a very brief encounter with Lucy Lawless who plays Ruby. Sam Raimi gives us a lot to chew on in the pilot, but is also keeping a lot secret, and as the first season unfolds you really can't tell if Ash will be the hero he has been in the past. Who is Ruby and what are her real motivations, will Pablo and Kelly become an item? Will Ash ever get to see Jacksonville, FL? There ended up being only 2 references to Army of Darkness that I caught, but there were some great callbacks to things that happened in the past, especially ED 2. Some of the episodes in the middle of the season are a bit light on action and horror and focus more on character development. But boy does the last half of this season really kick s&%# into 12th gear with the gore and horror and action. I ended up loving all of the first season, the show retained the campiness and style of the original films while injecting some new blood and modern touches that I think really helped the show overall. The humor, the action, the horror, it’s all on point. This is everything I wanted it to be and more. I think any fan of Evil Dead 1 and 2 or Army of Darkness is really going to enjoy watching more adventures of Ash vs. Evil Dead. FULLY APPROVED.

This release features all sixteen episodes from the sixth season of the AMC smash hit series The Walking Dead, following Rick Grimes' (Andrew Lincoln) attempts to lead the survival of humans amidst the zombie apocalypse in Alexandria, Virginia. One of the best seasons yet!

Season six is quite possibly my favorite season after the original. Seasons four and five really dragged for me to the point that I almost gave up on it, but I was intrigued by the last half of season five when they found Alexandria. Season six had a lot of action, suspense, and controversial cliffhangers. This review will contain some spoilers! The group must not only deal with over 1,000 zombies trying to invade Alexandria but they have to fight off more evil groups of people such as the Wolves and the Saviors. Morgan was given his very own solo episode that shows why throughout this season he lives by his 'All life is precious' motto, but the action and storytelling make up for it. My top 3 favorite episodes are JSS when the Wolves attack and Carol really steps up her 'Rambo' game, Not Tomorrow Yet when Rick leads a full on assault against a group of sleeping Saviors, and Last Day on Earth, the hugely controversial episode that ends on a massive cliffhanger. Rick Grimes steps into a much larger world when he meets Paul Rovia, who goes by the nickname, Jesus. Jesus leads Rick and his people to the Hilltop where they learn about the Saviors and their leader, Negan. Negan may very well be the toughest adversary Rick and his group has faced yet. If you love the show, I highly recommend THE WALKING DEAD: SEASON 6!!!

This is not The Walking Dead or a pretender

Is this The Walking Dead? No. The only similarity is it takes place in the same world and shares parts of its name. Other that that, Season One should not be compared to The Walking Dead. Travis is a dolt and my least favorite character, until the season finale that is when I believe the events that happened have woken him up. He will be a changed man in Season Two. The rest of the players have their ups and down and I can see potential parallels to The Walking Dead characters as they grow and are forced to change. We like our characters on The Walking Dead because we see how aware they are of the threat, how to survive, go on runs, take down walkers but would we have liked them if we met them during the "Fear" stage? Maybe some of them. Maybe none of them.
In Fear, we see a modern day family just trying to get through the day when inexplicable things start happening around them. Like most people would be, they are in denial of what's happening, put blind faith and trust in the government and military and are more than happy to let other people control things while they sit behind a fenced in town under martial law. The focus is on this one family (and the people that have been sort of adopted by them as well) and how they come to terms with society breaking down and less on the walker effect. Could they show downtown L.A. being overrun by walkers gnawing on people for six hours? Sure. But that's not where the "fear" really lies. The "fear" is, how do I get food, water, am I safe at home, do we stay, go, wait for help, do it on our own, what's really happening, is anyone in charge, and so on. When society collapses, the fear is not the visible decomposing flesh-eating former humans walking the streets. It is the fear in what can't be seen, controlled or known. Going into this show, that is what I anticipated and that was what I received. With that said, I cannot wait for Season Two!

Relive all seven seasons of the revolutionary sci-fi television series Star Trek: The Next Generation, which aired between 1987 and 1994. Scrapping the original series' limited "five-year mission" for a more ambitious ongoing one, Star Trek: The Next Generation aims high from its first episode. The Enterprise D is captained by Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), a leader more reserved and thought-driven than the beloved Captain Kirk. Other notable crew members include Klingon lieutenant Worf (Michael Dorn), security chief Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby), android Data (Brent Spiner), empathic ship's counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), first officer Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) VISOR-wearing lieutenant Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), Chief Medical Officer Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), and her genius son Wesley (Wil Wheaton). This release features tons of bonus content and behind the scenes features.

Good video, poor design choices for packaging
on September 24, 2016

Video Quality: Good. DVD Interface: Okay, apparently unchanged from previous releases. Disc Design: Highly Flawed. Packaging: Flawed.
If you're a STTNG fan like I'm an STTNG fan, you'll want to actually WATCH these videos. Wait, no, I guess that would mean I'm not really a "fan". A REAL fan would leave it in it's originally sealed package. So let's try again.
If you want to actually WATCH these videos, you'll find this release was not designed for that purpose! Obviously whoever designed the discs and packaging did not actually try USING it. Product testing folks - it's not just a theory, like Gravity!
Let's begin with the discs themselves. Monochrome neutral gray. I kid you not! More, the logo and text are "clear", so you're seeing the disc surface for the lettering, which results in, you guessed it, SILVER ON GRAY. What a brilliant color scheme - provided you don't actually need to READ the text. And speaking of the text, we have no readily-readable numbers here, no siree! We have teeny-tiny little WORDS under the logo for the season (sorry non-English-speakers!), and somewhat bolder disc numbers (in words, of course) toward the bottom. The upshot of all this is that it's annoyingly difficult to read the labels and find the disc you want.
To make matters worse, the packaging is plastic holders which hold two discs per side, with two sides each, making "pages" with four discs on each. The discs are held in place with clips which are shared on either side of the "page", each clip holding two discs. I'm including a photo so I can save myself a thousand words. :)
The downside is twofold. First, the discs are "interleaved" in such a way that one disc covers up about a third of the one sharing it's side of the "page". So no matter how you position it, you will never be able to see the Season and Disc number on the partially-covered disc. Worse, the clips are stiff, and about a third of the time, when you pop one disc off, the one on the opposite side of the page will pop off as well. Since you won't usually see that, you'll find out when you move the package and the disc falls to the floor, perhaps damaging it. And of course, between the stiffness of the clips and the way the lower discs are covered, you'll be "sliding" them against each other and the packaging to get them in and out, possibly scratching them. Yay!
But they do look nice sitting on the shelf, so if you don't plan on USING them, I recommend them! :-)

Season Two Starts Strong

This was one of the best new shows on TV last year. (I know it doesn't exactly match the comic books. I don't care.)
(Nothing below is a spoiler. It's either stuff you know from season 1 or stuff that gets shown to you in the first 10 minutes of season 2)
Season two kicks off with Jim Gordon being on unfriendly terms with the GCPD and having to make tough decisions about it. The series still centers around Gordon as the main character.
Young Bruce Wayne and Alfred are exploring what's down that creepy stairway behind the fireplace that they discovered in the final scene of season 1. (Gee...you think maybe it'll end up being a big cave that could be used as some kind of secret base of operations for a vigilante crime fighter? I dunno...I might be reaching on this one...)
Penguin continues to be seriously creepy, even more so than in season 1. It's still strange that The Penguin is played by the skinniest actor on the show. I mean The Penguin has always been the little fat villain. But at least he's short. Maybe they will have him become a big eater in later seasons.
The production value on the series continues to be really high. The sets are elaborate. The costuming and make up are great. The acting is fantastic. All the villains are wonderfully acted. It's got a very realistic look while maintaining the dingy comic book vibe of Gotham.

Seems you brought a hook to a sword fight

As much as I do enjoy fairytales, I don’t think I would have ever expected to be as hooked on Once Upon a Time as I am. This show continues to entertain me. Each episodes flies by all too quickly, and I can’t wait to find out what will happen next to the characters I love. That continued for season 5.
If you are new to the show, I don’t recommend you start here. This is one of the many serialized shows on TV these days, and to fully appreciate all that happens in season 5, you need the background on the characters and their relationships. They are complicated, which is frankly one of the things I love most about the show.
As with the previous two seasons, this season really breaks down into two arcs. In the fall, we get one story with a resolution and a cliffhanger that sets up the spring episodes. Even better, all these episodes aired on back to back Sunday nights with only one or two breaks in the scheduling, allowing the viewers to truly get lost in the story since we know that there will be more next week.
This season opens moments after season 4 ended. Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison), who originally came to town as the fairytale character’s savior from a curse, has turned to darkness. Very specifically, she has become The Dark One after this ancient darkness left Mr. Gold, aka Rumpelstiltskin, (Robert Carlyle). She is struggling with the power, however, trying to keep from succumbing to the evil, and her family and friends are going to help her. They think they can defeat the darkness once and for all by going to Camelot. However, when they return home weeks later, no one has any memory of what happened during their time away and Emma has embraced being the Dark One.
The back half of the season find the gang heading down to Hades to try to rescue one of their own and bring him back to Storybrooke. While down there, they meet many people, friend and foe, who have unfinished business. Can they help these people move on? Or will they get trapped down there by Hades (Greg Germann) instead?
Regina (Lana Parrilla) tries to help Emma avoid becoming evil while dealing with the weird relationship between herself, Robin Hood (Sean Maguire), and her half-sister Zelena (Rebecca Mader), aka the Wicked Witch of the West. David (Josh Dallas) develops a bromance with King Arthur (guest star Liam Garrigan) much to the dismay of his wife Mary Margaret, aka Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin). Gold, meanwhile, tries to deal with being human again, and it’s not an easy transition for him and his wife Belle (Emilie de Ravin). And Henry (Jared S. Gilmore) develops his first serious crush. We also get to meet Merida (guest star Amy Manson) and get an update on Ruby (Meghan Ory) and Mulan (Jamie Chung) as well as return to Oz before the season is over.
Why this show continues to enthrall me is the way they build the characters. These are complex people who have grown and changed as the seasons have gone along. When this show is working well, we have a story, but that story is showing us things about the characters and allowing them to be better developed. It’s again why I will tell you to watch the show from the beginning. It’s well worth it.
Not to mention that our time in Hades allows us to see quite a few people again. The second half of the season opened with the 100th episode of the show, and the writers did a fantastic job of using that to bring back some characters we loved (or loved to hate). Plus the flashback that episode filled in a gap in the storyline from the season 1 flashbacks. Not that I would have complained if we’d never gotten that answer, but I was thrilled to see them address it.
Yes, we still get flashbacks in each episode. Sometimes, they focus on the new characters, like Merida or King Arthur. Sometimes, they tell us a bit more about our main characters. And sometimes, they fill in the missing time for the characters from their time in Camelot. (And yes, I was ready to roll my eyes at the characters having their memories erased again when the characters did it for me. I had to laugh at that.)
While quite obviously I love the characters, I’m not trying to take away from the plot at all. Each episode is jam packed with storylines, twists, and surprises, and they are over all too quickly. The writers are still doing a great job of telling a story that is compelling and entertaining. The fact that they have created such rich characters to play with only makes it better.
Of course, I’m giving the actors their share of the credit for the rich characters. They take the material the writers give them and bring it to life perfectly. This is clearly as case where the actors and writers are on the same page, and the result for us is magical.
The only thing I didn’t care for in this season was a much publicized lesbian storyline. Honestly, the show didn’t need it. But, at least in this season, it was kept to one episode, so it is easy to ignore it and enjoy the rest of the brilliance that is this season.
There are 23 episodes in season 5, and they are all included in this set in their native wide screen and full surround. Extras include a look at bringing Merida to life for the show, the fate of a minor supporting character left up in the air at the end of the season (I’m being vague on purpose), a look at the 100th episode, and the usual audio commentaries, gag reel, and deleted scenes.
The final two hours set up the upcoming season, and I am excited about the possibilities with what they’ve done. Not only do I think it will be fascinating from a plot standpoint, but the potential for theme and character development are brilliant. I can’t wait to see what they do with it all.
So if you aren’t up to date on this wonderful show, you’ve got time to catch up. And if you are already a fan of Once Upon a Time, you’ll be glad to you picked up season 5 so you can revisit these characters any time you want.

AN OUTSTANDING SERIES

Brilliant series. I prefer this to Season 1, though both are equally brilliant. It's not really right to compare them. They are very different to one another.
The opening theme music is Leonard Cohen's brilliant "Nevermind". The lyrics match what goes on in the series.
The aerial shots and general vibe remind of David Lynch's "Lost Highway". And, in an homage to Lynch, the first episode features a car with a dead body being driven onto Mulholland Drive.
The theme of it all being a kind of Dream appeared in Series 1 (Rust Cohle). This theme is reprised here in Season 2 when Frank Semyon notices the two rain stains on his ceiling and wonders the same. He muses is his life like papier mâché? Is it about to begin to implode by forces he cannot see? His intuition is correct. In a nice shot the image morphs from the two ceiling stains to the two now eyeless sockets of the corpse in the morgue. And so it all begins... Later, over coffee, he notices the same stains on the table - and hurriedly tries to cover both of them with his cup.
There is also the weird Dream of Velcoro where he meets his prophesying father.
Some memorable performances here - in particular from Colin Farrell who excels. Rachel McAdams gives a tremendous performance as agent Antigone (Ani) Bezzerides. And what a great character she is! Vince Vaughn and Kelly Reilly also deliver. Taylor Kitsch gives a memorable performance as motorcycle cop turned detective, Paul Woodrugh. And I liked the poker faced "Nails", Frank's loyal bodyguard, who sees much and says little.
There is so much going on in this series. Even the "minor" scenes such as where Velcoro and Semyon meet in the bar, as the musician sings "This is my least favourite life", are laden with atmosphere. (The singer's name is Lera Lynn, in case you're interested.) The music keeps on playing and we now see Bezzerides in the casino, drinking heavily and losing at her table. And finally we see Woodrugh, on his bike and dangerously speeding down the highway, as he attempts to deal with his own inner demons. This sequence stamps the four main characters onto our awareness.
The plotline is often deep so some episodes are worth watching more than once to get the full story. Hence I would recommend the viewer get the DVD version.
An outstanding series. Stylish with a capital S. Six Stars.

Apparently the CW, in conjunction with Warner Bros. television studios, totally gets DC comics because after completely owning the character Green Arrow, they've gone and created a series about another iconic hero from that universe (i.e. The Flash), that's both true to the source-material and possessing all the sophistication of the big-screen.
So, let's see: superhero origin story... check, crossover scene with "Arrow"... check, foreshadowing for future Central City villains... check, great casting all-around... check, lots of eye-candy FX and exciting action... CHECK!!! Those of us who were able to watch episode 8 from Arrow Season 2 already knew who was gonna play Barry Allen, but actor Grant Gustin seems to have already become the part with just a cameo and a single pilot; and then there's Jesse L. Martin playing Detective Joe West, the guy that basically raised Barry and is also his mentor and biggest supporter at C.C.P.D. (where the latter works in forensic investigation), who, along with Tom Cavanagh as Dr. Harrison Wells, adds a level of drama (and let's face it... maturity) the show may have otherwise lacked. Fans of the DC universe will also recognize a name that has recently become almost legendary in the comic world, i.e. Geoff Johns, who is not only a writer for this series but also a producer for the show thus ensuring it will be a definite source for unmitigated, super-heroic, television magic.
This pilot episode reminded me of Marvel's, live-action Spiderman films as far as feel, being decidedly optimistic with an obvious undercurrent of fun (in spite of often tragic events that surround the central character) and based on what I've seen so far I'm also very pleased to say that this looks like a series the entire family could watch together (with no f-forwarding or embarrassing moments) and I just got to say I love a show that makes me laugh and leaves me feeling a little happier afterward. Way to go CW! Mid-season finale... holy cats!!! Introduction of a major villain from the Flash/DC universe and another major superhero, the excellent, excellent cast: Barry Allen, Det. West, Dr. Wells, Iris West. Performances that have invested these characters with life and their story (much like the central hero) continues to gain such momentum... I was laying on my couch at the beginning of this episode but on the edge of my seat by the end (also teary-eyed more than once). Nothing against SHIELD, Arrow or Constantine but The Flash in just 9 episodes has, in my opinion, established itself as possibly THE best action/adventure series on television.
A very moving and exciting finale has finished up an amazing first season that has rapidly (pun intended) made "The Flash" a fan favorite and I know so many of us are extremely stoked to see what amazing comic-book goodness this series will bring next season.
