"Aca-wedersehen, b*tches!".. the gang is back and

"Pitch Perfect 2" (2015 release; 115 min.) opens with our beloved a cappella band the Bellas giving a performance at the Kennedy Center in the presence of President Obama, when Fat Amy encounters a 'costume malfunction' of epic proportions. As a result of this 'muffgate' incident, the Bellas are suspended but they manage to negotiate a loophole: win the a cappella world championships in Denmark, and they regain full standing. At this point we are 10 min. into the movie. Will the ladies be able to pull it off? To tell you more would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.
Couple of comments: first, this sequel is the full length feature directing debut of actress-producer Elizabeth Banks (she also reprises her role as Gail, the TV commentator), and Banks does a very capable job as director. The movie is paced perfectly, and even better, remains faithful to the spirit of the first Pitch Perfect. Let's face it, if you loved the first movie, all you want to see is the return of the original gang (mostly Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson, I suppose), and find excuses for them to sing and interact. This time around, the big rival for the girls is a German band called Das Sound Machine, and I have to admit, DSM sounds and performs impressively. We are also introduced to a new member of the Bellas, Emily (played by Hailee Steinfeld, the young girl in True Grit is now a young woman). Beware: there are plenty of fairly (c)rude jokes and lines in the movie (such as: Emily's last name is Junk-Hardon, no, really) so that even thought this movie is rated PG-13, frankly I wouldn't recommend taking young kids to this. Some of the better lines come from the TC commentators (played by Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins), but my favorite comes from Anna Kendrick's Beca character, when she hisses back to her DSM rivals "aca-wedersehen, b*tches!", ha! The music is aplenty in this, even more so than in the first Pitch Perfect, and that's just fine by me (they even find a way of brining "Cups" back again). Bottom line: despite the high expectations, Banks & Co. have managed to deliver exactly what the people wanted from this sequel, not a small feat. Not surprisingly, there is already talk of a Pitch perfect 3, with Rebel Wilson already signed on. For my money, if they can't find a way of keeping Anna Kendrick around, my interest in another sequel will nosedive.
I saw the first Pitch Perfect knowing next to nothing about the movie, taking a flyer when it showed on its opening weekend. That screening was not all that well attended but I vividly remember how immensely I enjoyed that movie. Flash forward 3 years: I was really looking forward to seeing PP2. The early evening screening where I saw this at today (Sunday) was PACKED, and then some. The crowd absolutely ate it up, laughing at all the right times, and giving an applause when the house lights turned on. Many of them left as the movie's end titles started to run. A shame for them as they missed a very funny bonus extra which I won't spoil here. Just stick around when the end titles start running! Meanwhile, "Pitch Perfect 2" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Surprisingly Entertaining, and Reeves is Superb!

I've written often about the deterioration in quality of "The Adventures of Superman" after color was introduced, in 1954, and I'll still stand by the statement, for the last seasons of the series...But having just sat through this collection of the third and fourth seasons' color episodes, allow me to "eat crow"...these episodes are VERY entertaining, and certainly are far better than I remembered!
The decision to shoot in color was a bold move, by sponsor Kellogg's, producer Whitney Ellsworth, and the series' home studio, Motion Pictures for Television Inc,(MPTV), as the technology to even air color programming would not be widely available to local television stations for nearly a decade. Series like AOS, "The Cisco Kid", and "The Lone Ranger", in choosing to use the far more expensive process, understood that these programs would have a 'lifespan' far beyond the 1950s audience. Certainly, in the case of AOS, the continuing popularity of the show, and the sales of these collections prove their point!
Because of the expense of color, the seasons would be slashed from 26 to 13 episodes per season, which was a godsend to the cast, particularly George Reeves. Lighting for color was MUCH brighter and hotter than for black and white, and the costume department realized Reeves' original brown-and-gray, frequently sweat-stained "shoulder-padded longjohns" would be even more of a problem in future. A 'genius' decided to redesign the costume, creating a thicker, full-body red and blue suit of foam rubber, which would not 'show' perspiration (but would, sadly, make the actor appear much stockier). While in theory this was a great idea, in truth, it was a disaster, as the suit didn't 'breathe', with 'locked-in' sweat causing severe rashes and frequent heat exhaustion for Reeves. A half-hour stretch was the maximum he could wear it, safely, making for long 'shooting days'...and the physical torture of the suit would 'age' Reeves, rapidly, over the remainder of the series.
Knowing this, my respect for Reeves' professionalism has increased, and this collection offers some of his really terrific performances, as well as some of Noel Neill and Jack Larson's best work, as well. Among my favorites are "Superman Week" and "King For a Day" (which shows Reeves still willing to manhandle baddies...something that would soon be completely eliminated as Kellogg's bowed to parental pressure for less violence); "Jimmy the Kid", offering Larson a meaty dual role, as both 'comic relief' Jimmy Olsen, and a notorious gunman; and, best of all, "The Wedding of Superman", an acting tour-de-force by Neill, in a remarkably sensitive (and prophetic, for "Lois & Clark" fans) episode of Lois and Superman finally acknowledging their love. This episode is acclaimed as one of the finest episodes of the entire series, and shouldn't be missed!
So, if you harbor an illusion that the color episodes will be a disappointment, like I did, I strongly urge you to reconsider, and buy this collection...I think you'll be in for a VERY pleasant surprise!

For Paul a Fitting Tribute

I've got nothing but praise for this movie. Here we are, the seventh film in to a long running franchise and it just happens to be one of the best, one of the most unique and one of the most creative yet. Throughout the Fast and Furious series, the franchise has slowly grown from its humble beginnings as an undercover cop film that featured street racers and fast cars to something bigger and more bombastic with each new entry. No complaints from this guy either. I've loved the ride. Furious 7 to me is the most "blockbuster" film of the series to date. I honestly don't think this movie was any less exciting or "big" than any Marvel movie I've seen except for maybe Avengers and Winter Soldier. It was a huge movie, even more ambitious than the 6th which I thought was extremely ambitious in its own right. This has instantly become one of my favorites in the series easily on Par with #1 and #5 my other two favorites.
I also wanted to say what I thought about the Paul Walker situation. The way his character is handled in this film is nothing short of brilliant. I know the film was only half finished when he passed away, but you would never know it. The character "Brian" has no less screen time than he has always had. And keeping this spoiler free, the way they handled writing him out of further movies was straight up brilliant, touching and moved at least this guy to tears. Honestly. It was a tragedy that Paul Walker died so young and his unfortunate passing must have created a huge problem for the production of this film that could've ended up leaving it a complete disaster. Luckily that was not the case. I would love to shake the hands of everyone involved in making this movie for the way that they handled Paul's passing and finishing the filming with his character still completely intact. It was an outstanding tribute to an integral player in this franchise and an actor taken before his time. I'm sure it was not an easy undertaking. The creative team behind this film all deserve all the kudos in the world for the most respectful send off of Paul Walker they could have possibly come up with. I'm sure his family and friends would be proud, as would he.

Worked great for multi-boot USB!

I bought this primarily to put all of my Windows and Linux install discs and bootable utility discs (like A/V scanners, backup, partition editors, etc...) onto a single USB stick. This worked great. Found some utilities to make it easy (just drop the ISO files into subfolders), did some customization, and now I no longer have to bring a pouch of CD/DVDs when I go to help a friend or relative out - nor do they need a working DVD drive.
It isn't the fastest USB flash drive, though, but for the price, I can't expect USB 3.0 and SSD speeds.

The best Disney film to date
on July 20, 2016

When I went to see this film, I expected it to be good. I expected the usual Disney "talking animal" movie, some fun moments, and pretty animation. What I did not expect was a story that deals with some very uncomfortable truths about our world, brilliantly told in a way that anyone can understand and that are woven into the plot, rather than beating you over the head with the message.
I did not expect such a wonderful, strong, well written female lead. I did not expect the main characters to not have a forced, shoehorned in romantic subplot. I did not expect the best Disney movie since Lilo and Stitch, and easily my favorite since The Lion King. Everything about this movie is wonderful, from the animation to the voices to the music to the story to the messages.
I did not expect to so completely love the main characters, who are so well written and fully realized that when the movie's tearjerker moments hit you they don't feel forced because you really believe these characters. Judy dealing with her latent mistrust of foxes, Nick dealing with society's view of foxes, and how both of these characters overcome their past trauma and grow is fantastic and some of the best character writing I've seen in a major release.
I can't possibly say enough good things about this movie. If I DO have a negative, it's that from now on all animated movies (and most live action ones) will fall short of this film's strengths.
If Frozen is a 8/10, Big Hero 6 is a 9/10, and Zootopia is an 11/10

I would give this six stars!

Actually, I would give this six stars. Does it knock my socks off, every time? no, nor do I expect something to, but it's most always true to "comic book gone film." It's like reading a comic book, only better, as you see the live actors. I give it the extra star because I have such a good time watching it. It's a show I can discuss with my grandchildren. So this is not like a serious film review, but I am an artist, and do take it seriously, too. It's good clean fun, interesting, just soapy enough, with moral questions to ponder, with surprises, twists and turns.
I'm so glad I found this show, worth every penny for my viewing entertainment. It's solid in that it's interesting, well done and the acting is great. The choice of costume, and casting, too. Very wonderful. My favorite type of show.

Excellent series!

Even the secondary characters are engaging in this series of stories penned by the writer of The Mentalist.
This is Gotham before the Batman begins to bring order to that city.
A number of the characters from the comic are introduced in their early years with personalities, strengths and flaws that foreshadow what they will become in DC comics canon. The delivery is subtle, believable and the plots and characters are very nicely done.
Little Poison Ivy has an abusive father and raises her few pathetic plants in a small apartment in a concrete jungle.
The casting is flawless, as are the direction and acting. The characters (even the stranger villains) are entirely believable (Oswald Cobblepot particularly so). The writing makes even the "toss-away" characters three dimensional.
A street urchin asks a favor of a burnt out cop in an office full of crooked cops - he denies the request (out of habit) and she quite casually threatens to "Scream and tell everyone that you 'touched me'". He lurches back from her and gives her a pained expression (despairing that even the children of Gotham have lost all respect for the cops, or that one so young would prove so adept at blackmail) before getting the detective that she demanded to see. That 30 second exchange by Selena and "cop number 6" has an impact (technically, it should have been just filler between scenes).
And again, Selena Kyle as a thief and street urchin looking for her mother is especially well done (and it really is hard to pick a "favorite" in this group - there are excellent scenes for all the primary and secondary characters).
Harvey Bullock, always a nuisance character that I found annoying as a two-dimensional "corrupt cop" - is actually quite a believable, sympathetic character here... even while he's being a completely arrogant, lazy jerk! I really can't bring myself to hate This version of Harvey... and he clearly sold out years ago.
The writer/director and actor actually conjured up a Harvey that ..... dare I say it..... I actually Like!
The future Commissioner Gordon is the main character of this ensemble - Very intelligently done. Determined enough to take on a corrupt city government, intelligent enough to stay Just under the radar by "playing ball" without actually playing ball. He brings an insightful air of menace to the criminals that he encounters without actually stepping over the lines... a precarious balancing act.
Even his girlfriend, Barbara, is notable in the few minutes that she is on screen. Ideally a sounding board for him to recount the events of his day and plan strategy - she engages and does a lot more than just listen and kick in an idea or two. She helps bring the issue to a head by pushing him into the deep water (with a mischievous grin) all the while providing him with plausible deniability.
Bruce Wayne's presentation as a 12-13 year old was, however, most potentially concerning for me as his was the easiest precursor character to get terribly wrong. They nailed it! Bruce the adolescent shows a forceful personality with out showing any sign of youthful petulance. He comes across as Very intelligent and Very perceptive, but most of all ..... Driven in a way the borders on the disturbing.
Alfred (another strong role) explains to Lt Gordon why he Hasn't called in a psychologist to look into why Bruce seems..... more than a bit ..... different. A bit too detached, A bit too perceptive - it seems as if he already has an agenda and he doesn't care to explain what it is.
When you ask yourself - could This kid grow up into a man that will make hardened sociopaths wet themselves, the answer for me was - oh yeah. The transformation has already begun.

FLASHHHHHHH!

Apparently the CW, in conjunction with Warner Bros. television studios, totally gets DC comics because after completely owning the character Green Arrow, they've gone and created a series about another iconic hero from that universe (i.e. The Flash), that's both true to the source-material and possessing all the sophistication of the big-screen.
So, let's see: superhero origin story... check, crossover scene with "Arrow"... check, foreshadowing for future Central City villains... check, great casting all-around... check, lots of eye-candy FX and exciting action... CHECK!!! Those of us who were able to watch episode 8 from Arrow Season 2 already knew who was gonna play Barry Allen, but actor Grant Gustin seems to have already become the part with just a cameo and a single pilot; and then there's Jesse L. Martin playing Detective Joe West, the guy that basically raised Barry and is also his mentor and biggest supporter at C.C.P.D. (where the latter works in forensic investigation), who, along with Tom Cavanagh as Dr. Harrison Wells, adds a level of drama (and let's face it... maturity) the show may have otherwise lacked. Fans of the DC universe will also recognize a name that has recently become almost legendary in the comic world, i.e. Geoff Johns, who is not only a writer for this series but also a producer for the show thus ensuring it will be a definite source for unmitigated, super-heroic, television magic.
This pilot episode reminded me of Marvel's, live-action Spiderman films as far as feel, being decidedly optimistic with an obvious undercurrent of fun (in spite of often tragic events that surround the central character) and based on what I've seen so far I'm also very pleased to say that this looks like a series the entire family could watch together (with no f-forwarding or embarrassing moments) and I just gotta say I love a show that makes me laugh and leaves me feeling a little happier afterward. Way to go CW!
[Update 12/10/14 *MILD SPOILERS*]: Mid-season finale... holy cats!!! Introduction of a major villain from the Flash/DC universe and another major superhero, the excellent, excellent cast: Barry Allen, Det. West, Dr. Wells, Iris West. Performances that have invested these characters with life and their story (much like the central hero) continues to gain such momentum... I was laying on my couch at the beginning of this episode but on the edge of my seat by the end (also teary-eyed more than once). Nothing against SHIELD, Arrow or Constantine but The Flash in just 9 episodes has, in my opinion, established itself as possibly THE best action/adventure series on television.
[Update 5/20/15] A very moving and exciting finale has finished up an amazing first season that has rapidly (pun intended) made "The Flash" a fan favorite and I know so many of us are extremely stoked to see what amazing comic-book goodness this series will bring the next season.

Paves The Way For Future Marvel Events

Following the destructive events of the last film; the Avengers have now rebuilt a new headquarters and Tony Stark and Bruce Banner are in the process of programming a global peacekeeping machine program called Ultron. Things seem to go well at first, until Ultron becomes self-aware.
With Ultron now sentient, he does the opposite of what Stark and Banner wanted and develops an evil philosophy that in order to save the earth, he must exterminate mankind. He takes the powerful duo of Pietro “Quicksilver” and the beautiful but sneaky and psychological manipulative Wanda “Scarlet Witch” Maximoff under his leadership to carry out his plan to first kill every Avenger and then humanity.
With the fate of the earth and all who inhabit it in grave danger the Avengers must reassemble to prevent Ultron and his minions from destroying the planet. Along the way, the Avengers will face the ultimate test as their trust and friendship with each other is put on the line all in the middle of battle
Overall: Avengers – Age of Ultron was a major success and was just as great as the first film. Action packed with a well scripted plot to keep your attention beginning to end. One thing I loved about this sequel was the focus of the bonds with a lot of the characters involved in the film. Throughout you’ll see bond developments—good and bad, minor and major with Hulk/Banner, Iron Man and Ultron, Wanda and Pietro, and even Hawkeye and his wife. Hulk fans will be disappointed to know that the Hulk’s appearances and on-screen time in this installation of the film are kept to a minimum but in a way it all has to do with the story. I don’t want to spoil anything but I’ll just say that the ending leaves the viewer asking a lot of interesting and exciting questions about what the future holds for a few different Avengers in particular. All in all, it just leaves you wanting more! I was extremely satisfied with Avengers: Age of Ultron and I can’t wait for Infinity War to see what happens next. Any fan of the Avengers or any hero in general involved in the Avengers needs to add this one to their collection
