Exquisitely Chaotic and Brutal

The Mad Max series is finally enjoying a long awaited (30 years!) return to form (or is it?). Fury Road brings our titular hero back into the spotlight where he deserves to be. This time around Mel Gibson has been replaced with fan favorite actor Tom Hardy (Inception, Warrior, The Dark Knight Rises). Not only was Hardy a perfect cast from the aesthetic standpoint (looks very much like a younger Mel Gibson in the movie) but the way he plays the character makes it feel like he's been doing it forever.
The supporting cast was anything but lost in this one. In fact many people will say they stole the show (mostly because of Hardy's more limited role). Theron turns in an excellent performance as the Imperator Furiosa and raises the bar of the female hero almost to the levels of Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley from the Alien movies. Nicholas Hoult (Google him) plays someone that hardly resembles him or anything else he's done and does a great job making you feel conflicted about his character Nux.
Chaotic and brutal, those are the two most defining words to describe this movie. The action in this film is so intense and so constant the minutes in between scenes where it slows down (albeit with an uneasy tension) are just enough for you to catch your breath. Don't be fooled by the extravagantly improbable scenes. Most of which you see in this film was ACTUALLY done (not CGI). Many, if not all of the race scenes are all done with professional drivers and stunt people, making the movie just that much more incredible
George Miller (who also directed the first 3 movies) returns to re-create his dry and desolate world and fill it with vile villains and heroic heroes.
This is Mad Max for the new era.

THE DARK SIDE OF PARADISE

"Hawaii Five-O" takes on its fifth season with 25 action-packed episodes on and off the Hawaiian Islands. The returning core cast gets a full time addition in Jorge Garcia as Jerry Ortega. The show's basic case of the week premise gets boosted by some longer story arcs, including one in which Danny gets a very unfortunate trip to Columbia courtesy of his brother, the effects of which will last several episodes. McGarrett has a long-awaited final confrontation with Wo Fat. Kono will get a marriage proposal and, maybe, a wedding, if she can keep the expected guests alive long enough to get them there. Chin gets enmeshed in yet another Internal Affairs tangle. There's plenty of action, along with the tangled storylines fans have come to expect, and who would want to miss the priceless interaction between McGarrett and Captain Lou Grover (Chi McBride), two law men who just don't see eye-to-eye.
This reviewer really enjoyed a couple of the late season episodes. In one, Kono is stranded at sea and must rely on survival skills taught her by her mother. In another, preparations for Kono's wedding are interrupted by the frantic search for a missing tactical nuclear weapon. Anyway, it's all good fun, and recommended to fans of the series.

THE NERDS STRIKE BACK

While I love the whole ensemble concept in series these days I’m concerned that at some point it will seem to standard to work. That hasn’t happened yet but it could easily become that way with the number of shows working that formula. That being said at the moment I’m still happy with several series in that mode and this is one of them.
Walter O’Brien (Elyes Gabel) is an eccentric genius, devoid of emotion but able to think things through faster and in more depth than any normal person. His current line of work is solving problems for people with a team of other genius outcasts like himself. The team includes Toby Curtis (Eddie Kaye Thomas), a brilliant psychiatric specialist who is a behaviorist but with a gambling addiction he’s in the midst of conquering. Then there is Happy Quinn (Jadyn Wong), an engineering prodigy who also happens to have an anger issue she tends to solve with physical confrontation. Lastly in this group is Sylvester Dodd (Ari Stidham), a mathematical and computer whiz who has social skills problems. The team isn’t doing well when the show starts but their fortunes soon change.
That’s because into their life walks Agent Cabe Gallo (Robert Patrick) who works for Homeland Security. Gallo and Walter have a past together. It was Gallo who arrested Walter when he was a young child and had hacked NASA. He became a father figure to Walter helping him through those troubled times and keeping him out of prison. But something happened that brought about a rift in their relationship, something that works its way out before the end of season one. When the show begins though, Gallo walks into the team’s headquarters and offers them a job working as consultants for Homeland Security. It pays well, offers them a chance to work with great equipment and stay solvent, but Walter is hesitant.
The team votes and agrees to the job and each week following is called upon to stop some crime or catastrophic event from happening. The types of aid the team offers to Homeland Security more often than not involves some technical situation that require knowledge only their expertise can handle. These items range from communications being shut down on all airplanes in the Los Angeles area to the internet infrastructure being attacked with the intent of collapsing it to a mole within the CIA. Each week the team takes on a different task.
Another item it tossed into the mix which is the fact that this group of socially awkward geniuses have trouble relating to people out in the field. A chance encounter at the local diner where Walter has fixed the internet for the owner finds him discovering that a waitress there named Paige (Katherine McPhee) has a young son named Ralph (Riley B. Smith) who reminds Walter of himself at that age, a child genius misdiagnosed as having problems when the truth is he is brilliant. It doesn’t hurt that Walter just might also find himself attracted to Paige but having never been in touch with his emotions he’s not quite sure of what is going on. When the time comes to get someone to take on the liaison task, Walter gets Cabe to recruit Paige. The healthy jump in pay coupled with allowing her son to be around others like himself makes her acceptance of the job a no brainer.
With all of the characters in place and numerous reasons to save the world set in motion the series kicks off. Everyone should be happy, including the critics right? Well maybe not. Many found this show to over the top and unbelievable to accept. Moments seemed cartoonish to them. For those critics I say hogwash. The show was made not to be a blueprint on how to set up Homeland Security. It was made to have fun, to offer adventure coupled with brains instead of a team that just opens fire at the first sign of trouble.
The show harkens back to another well received series that the critics were never overly fond of either, MACGUYVER. That show lasted for some time and then went into movie of the week mode. It was a fan favorite. And SCORPION seems to be following in its footsteps with better than average ratings for a new series. Season two is already being filmed.
If you find that the elements mentioned in this review peek your interest, if you think that a show that has fun and heart is one that you might like to watch then I highly recommend this one. Not only do we get to see the development of characters from week to week, we get to see a group of people that have grown into a family of their own as well as grow accustomed to the newer members with each episode. And while they’re saving the world the odds are that something along the way will be new to you as well, a method used to save the world might teach you something too. With the wasteful number of shows on TV these days this becomes a good thing. Who knows, you might find yourself watching season two the day it begins airing after watching this one.

"Metric Tools."

Once again we visit two tried and true plot devices: Stranger in a Strange Land and The Hero's Journey. This colorful and humorous outing is directed by Tim Johnson ("Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas") with a screenplay written by Tom Astle and Matt Ember ("Epic") based on the novel by Adam Rex.
This animated PG movie from DreamWorks is entertaining; even the title sequence has a good laugh. Of course the adults find this story more predictable than the children; on the other hand adults are amused by many, many bits that go right over the youngsters' heads (e.g., a reference to metric tools).
The voices provided by Jim Parsons ("The Big Bang Theory") as the alien Oh and Rihanna ("Annie" - 2014) as earthling Tip are outstanding and mesh perfectly with the excellent animation that conveys their emotions to a "T." They get able assistance from Steve Martin ("The Big Year") and Jennifer Lopez ("Ice Age"), as voices for the self-centered Captain Smek and Tip's sweet mother Lucy, respectively.
As is the case with a movie like this, I prefer to focus on what a child (and a parent) might take away:
* The importance of friendship: despite a rocky beginning between two very dissimilar beings, friendship is an essential part of life.
* Through the eyes of an alien, we see things we view as ordinary: The purring of a cat.... ice cream ("frozen sweetened bovine secretion").
* Remember "Knock-knock" jokes?
* The irresistibility of rhythm: watch Oh react to music on the radio.
* Tell-tale colors: Oh turns green when he tells a lie and the children in our screening audience spotted it right away.
* The longing for family: Oh lost his parents long ago and Tip is trying to find her mother.
* Oh is always upbeat and sees the best in everything. "This is the best day EVER!" and "This is the best hiding place in the Milky Way!"
* See how difficult it is to cancel an E-vite once the invitation is sent in error ("Reply All").
All in all we enjoyed it!

Stays fresh through season 4

It's amazing how well the writers do at keeping this show fresh into it's forth season. That's a long time to reuse characters. (Nearly every character in the show is a reboot of a famous fairy tale character)
The writers keep the characters original even though they have been around for longer than many of the viewers. They change the nature of the characters without being offensive to your childhood memories. (Captain Hook is a decent person. Peter Pan is evil. And somehow it works!) The Evil Queen from Snow White becomes likable after being evil, etc, etc. It all keeps the story fresh, rather than being one episode after another where the same good guys battle the same bad guys over and over and over. The relationships between the characters are constantly evolving.
The addition of the Frozen characters so far this season has been interesting. The casting, make up, and costuming is PERFECT to match the animated Frozen characters.
All in all the show is just fun. While it has a lot of the traits of being 'campy', it somehow comes off as totally entertaining.
Don't start watching from season 4 though. You will be completely lost. Start at the beginning and enjoy it.

Bought Season Two early for two reasons: James Spader, and the writing.
Season One caught me immediately - this show is brilliantly crafted to carry both one story per show through the titular Blacklist, as well as slowly unveiling larger plots threading throughout the show. Most of the supporting actors are extremely good as well. Megan Boone started well but a little "generic" - by the end of season one, she had grown well above the start and her chemistry with Spader is great. Harry Lennix and Alan Alda are fantastic, as usual - and introducing Peter Stormare will make this season so much better. I can't wait!

I loved this movie. It had me laughing, and crying, and it was sexy, and poignant, and very, very well acted. Jake and Anne are wonderful together. Very believeable. I could have done with a little less of the "brother" character, played by Josh Gad, and I wish Jake had more scenes with Hank Azaria and Oliver Platt, but I really did love it. When it ended, I just wanted to go right back to the beginning again!

Love Robin Hood? Well, Mel Brooks has made fun of this timeless story in one of the "best ideas since pay toilets." This excellent and witty film has continued Mel Brooks' legacy of wacky, outrageous films such as Blazzing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs and History of the World Part I.
Cary Elwes probably described his own performance best: "Unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent!" Cary Elwes brought comedic timing and a wacky calmness to literature's most heroic and stern characters.
Other great performances included Richard Lewis as Prince John who is constantly annoyed by the noise in his castle and his outstanding mobile mole. David Chappelle brings soul to the cast in a midevil attitude sort of way with impersonations of Malcolm X and famous lines such as "awww, white men can't jump!" Roger Rees also brings a wacky interpritation to one of history's greatest villains. Mark Blankfield brings and incredibly funny wacky blindman to life with excellent delivery and fast punchlines. Also, watch out for Little John, "but don't let the name fool you, in real life, he's real big!" played by Eric Kramer. Some other noticible performances were given by Amy Yasbeck, Megan Cavanagh, and Matthew Porretta.
Watch out for many famous stars making brief appearances such as Isaac Hayes, Tracey Ullman, Patrick Stewart, Dom DeLuise, Dick Van Patten, and of course, Mel Brooks.
You'll want to watch this hillarious movie over and over again to catch some of the faster jokes and to pick up on some of the older ones. I have seen this movie many times and I still repeat lines from it on almost a daily basis.
As Mel Brooks would say this movie is "the best thing to come since pay toilets!"

Two parts comedy, One part action!

The Critics shredded and diced this movie so I really went to the theatre expecting to see one sick puppy. Instead, I was delighted and I continue to be delighted every time I watch this marvelous movies. John Carpenter created an original howl of a time, with tongue firm planted through the cheek and simply went wild with fun and throw away lines, that will keep you coming back again and again. The Critics just did not get the JOKE!! Sigh...fortunately, the public did not agree.
A great cast Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun, Kate Burton (Richard's Daughter), Victor Wong and James Hong take several wrong turns and end up in a war - kung fu style - kidnappings and all sorts "some very unreasonable things". Originally the manuscript for the second Buckaroo Banzai movie, Big Trouble hits bulls eye where BB just missed. It's over kill to the max, but such a great way to go as Jack Burton - Russell doing a BAD John Wayne Imitation - runs headlong into the magick underbelly of Chinatown. One critic put down Russell's performance as "was so poor, it was like he was doing a poor John Wayne imitation" WELL, DUH???? Earth to LM!!
Russell is taking Dennis Dun to pick up his bride to be, but she is mistakenly snatched. It's up to Russell, Dun, Wong and crew to try and get her back. Instead, they lose Kim Cattral to Hong as well as Burton's Peterbuilt "the Porkchop Express", so old Jack has to get mean.
If you don't want to laugh so hard your ribs hurt, you don't enjoy parodies, you don't enjoy bad John Wayne imitations...fine give it a pass. But everyone else wanting a great time, this is one you should not miss!

A phenomenal movie that everyone should see

Steven Spielberg finally got the long awaited respect he deserved as director when he won the Oscar for his 3 hour 16 minute epic. And now this excellent 20th Anniversary Blu ray finally arrives. Spielberg shot in black and white because he says that is how he pictures all the events in his mind. As a kid he had seen some photos and they were B & W. With a splash of color at the beginning and end, he also tosses in an effective shot of a little girl walking through chaos wearing a red coat.
Brilliant movie making but certainly not a movie that can be casually watched. Nor is it a film that requires regular viewing. Frankly it is difficult assignment most of the time. In spite of the upbeat aura of Schindler's great good, the film also accurately depicts the horrors bestowed upon Jews throughout Eastern Europe. As one might expect, we see superb performances especially by Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley and Ralph Fiennes. A masterpiece for all time.
This Blu ray transfer includes a 1080p resolution and a 1.85:1 aspect ratio that matches the original. Spielberg personally supervised the high definition transfer and the lossless audio (DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1) restoration of the film from the 35mm film original negative. Special features include:
Voices from the List: Documentary featuring a number of testimonies and stories from men and women who survived the Holocaust thanks to Oskar Schindler.
