Chilling depiction of the excess of the 20's

As a fan of the book as well as of DeCaprio's, this is undeniably the Gatsby adaptation I've been waiting for.
First, the set: Much attention is paid to small but important details, such as the glowing green light at the dock and the faded oculist's sign. The splendor of Gatsby's mansion is recreated exquisitely, and the "valley of ashes" doesn't disappoint in its ghastly wasteland.
Second, Luhrmann doesn't depart from the story too much, though I think there was a lot more discourse between Gatsby and Daisy than I remember reading in the book. He may have changed some of the dialogue, but he does stay unflinchingly true to the spirit of the book and its morals, which I think is vastly more important.
Third, the casting was perfect, and probably the most telling detail about Luhrmann's good judgment in making this film- DeCaprio is the embodiment of Gatsby--the smile, the charm, the mannerisms are all what one reading the book would expect him to be like. Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway was also a great pick -- he has the 'outsider' qualities required for the role of the narrator. Debicki as Jordan Baker was also very well-cast; she had the aloof coolness and the slightly-bored gaze I pictured when I read the novel. Daisy, by far, was the most crucial casting in my opinion, because if played too obnoxiously and over-the-top, the whole story falls flat. However, Carey Mulligan makes her flighty and airy but also lets her show real emotion. In a way, though her character does horrible things in the movie, you can't help but feel that she isn't completely devoid of thought/emotion. And of course, her husband Tom, makes the antagonist as a macho-man whose emotions occasionally seep through to the surface.
Honestly, with all the good things this movie had going for it, the anachronistic music surprisingly didn't bother me one bit. It was also clever how jazz motifs were mixed in with hip-hop and rap beats, somehow making the sound swirl into an unidentifiable, chaotic experience.
Overall, this was a phenomenal adaptation and definitely a must for any Gatsby fan.

Warner Brothers has made up for the long wait for a good DVD edition of The Dirty Dozen. This two-disc package is excellent, a major improvement on the previous release.
Image quality: A new transfer to anamorphic video. The image is great--very sharp and clear, giving all due emphasis to the gritty quality of the story. In some shots you can see every pore on Lee Marvin's face. A little frightening, I suppose, but worth it.
Sound: Very good. The Dirty Dozen won the Oscar for Best Sound Effects, and this DVD's sound does the film justice.
Special features: Surprisingly good for a film as far-removed in time as this. The highlight, for me, was the commentary on the film by a few of the surviving actors, a film historian, and Cpt. Dale Dye of Warriors, Inc. Dye's salty commentary is the real jewel of the features on this edition.
It's nice to see a movie I've loved since childhood getting the DVD it deserves. If you've been waiting for this DVD--or even if you haven't--pick it up as soon as you can. Highly recommended

Fabulous Western Mystery Series

If you like Big Sky Country and mysteries, this series seems like a perfect marriage of the two. It is worth watching for the scenery and rustic interiors alone. Based on a popular mystery series by Craig Johnson, the sheriff, Walt Longmire, is skillfully played as an independent, compassionate but tough lawman who is recovering from the death of his wife. Australian actor Robert Taylor plays this role but leaves his accent down under. At first he seemed nondescript to me. Couldn't pick him out in a line-up, but his magnetism grows on you. He has got an abrasive and occasionally annoying female deputy, Vic, whose impulsive energy is the perfect foil for his understated demeanor.
Series that are based on novels seems to have more depth of detail and nuances. Look forward to seeing future episodes. I think this is going to be a popular series as it has the essentials: likable detective, inspired casting, gorgeous setting, rustic western décor, complex plots and characters, and interesting dialogue.

Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze are a couple madly in love with each other when Swayze is murdered - but just won't entirely go away. His ghost is hanging around, protecting Moore from some bad guys and trying to figure out a way to give someone the information needed to nail his killer. The movie veers between genres: horror, sci-fi, romance, mystery. And then, there's Whoopi Goldberg in another signature role (she won an Oscar for this one); she plays a medium who is shocked to find that she really IS gifted with second sight - and her confusion as she comes to grips with her newfound power is hilarious to watch as she works with Swayze to pass on the incriminating criminal information.
It's a tear jerker, especially the scene in which ghost and Goldberg revisit Moore in a passionate, loving, romantic sayonara interlude set to the music of the Righteous brothers.
Marvelous sentimental schmaltz that works perfectly in every way.

A little pricey if you just need the space, but...

There are 2TB drives out there for less money and if all you need is a huge space, you might consider one of those. The value added in this package is the backup software that is bundled with the drive (actually, delivered right on the drive).
WD Smartware is a backup/restore suite that, once installed, boots with your machine. If the MyBook is attached via your USB port, it will constantly monitor activity and make backups accordingly in the background in near real time without any action on your part. It also maintains multiple generations of files (you choose how many), so you can go back to, say, three versions ago if you need to recover a spreadsheet or other data file.
You can also use it on multiple computers. Backups are stored under folders with the same name as the PC they're created on.
I tested on a Win XP Pro laptop and a Win7 laptop and detected no system slowdowns at all. Every now and then the activity light on the drive would flicker; otherwise the backup operations were not noticeable. The drive itself is completely silent. I strongly consider copying the software included on the drive to a CD before you do anything. I can envision situations where you might want to delete everything off the My Book and if you do that, you'll no longer have the software to install on another machine (the manual has instructions about where to look for it online).

Appealing chemistry Will Smith and Margot Robbie

Will Smith is a favorite actor of mine and has been for many years. It has been quite awhile since the audience has last seen Will Smith on screen as a lead, but he shows us why there's a science to getting people to trust you in the movie Focus.
While at a restaurant, Nicky takes notice of Jess who is at the moment in the company of a very drunk individual. She comes over to Nicky's table and suddenly asks Nicky to pretend to be her boyfriend. They strike up a conversation and immediately Jess invites Nicky upstairs to hotel room. Just as things are about to get steamy, Jess's "husband" bursts in and claims he will shoot Nicky; too which Nicky replies that he has cancer. After Jess figures out that Nicky realizes what is really going on here, she later meets up with Nicky wanting him to teach her his skill. But there is so much more to being a con man.
Will Smith does a fantastic job in his role as Nicky. He is cunningly clever and easily maneuvers his way in and out of schemes like there's nothing to it. His performance in this movie is a reminder of the Will Smith I enjoy watching in his movies. Great job. The Gorgeous and talented Margot Robbie does a nice job portraying Jess throughout the course of the movie. Jess is a fast learner, and she and Nicky begin to develop an attraction towards each other. And in terms of chemistry, Will Smith and Margot Robbie are ELECTRIC together on-screen. Rodrigo Santoro plays Garriga and does a good job, while Adrian Martinez stars in a supporting role as Farhad and does a really nice job.
In terms of story there were a FEW times where the script felt uneven, but that did not stop me from enjoying the movie. The music that this movie has is also really likable. Each scene that has music playing in the background fits in really well with the scene it was being played during. Focus is not a slow movie by any means, but it is a good movie due to the lead actors (and chemistry between Will Smith and Margot Robbie), the humor, the surprises, and the quick change of scenery . And with all this being said, I consider the movie Focus to be

Much better than you've been led to believe

The producers of this film shot themselves in the foot, twice. It was supposed to be released in the summer (where it belonged) & then pulled it & set it for a February release leaving the pundits to speculate that there had to be something wrong with the film. Strike one. Next the producers gave a unannounced sneak preview of the film at the Sundance Film Festival. That was like showing a new model Chevrolet at a Maserati - Ferrari -Lamborghini car show. No matter how good the Chevy is it's not going to be appreciated by those car buyers. So now we had endless articles about how the Sundance audience hated "Jupiter" and some audience members walked out in the middle of the showing. Well, dah, what else would you expect? Strike two. The word was out, "Jupiter" was rotten. If I read that once on the internet I read it half a dozen times before it even opened in theatres. I wanted to see the film anyway (not trusting the film critics as far as I could throw them). I likes the film. Interesting story; good guys vs. bad guys; Unbelievably beautiful special effects; very good film score; well acted; etc. First & foremost it was entertaining. What more do you want from this kind of film. It isn't Tennessee Williams! It's just a very enjoyable sci-fi film I'm glad I went to see.

Next up is Predators from 2010. This is my biggest complaint. The disc that is contained in this set has NO SPECIAL FEATURES. It is just the movie itself with scene selection, audio changes, and subtitle options. That is it. The previous release of this movie had a bunch of special feature. All in all a good bundle, despite the fact that Predators is a bare bones Blu Ray. Worth the money, but for the completionists out there who like their special features along with their movie, this is a big disappointment.

This is the 1st horror film of 2014 I've seen, and I really quite enjoyed it. It was very creepy and had some great genuine jump scares that gave me chills. I usually don't care much for demonic possession movies, but this one was intriguing because it involves a cop teaming up with a preacher to solve a supernatural murder case. (This would make a great tv series) Eric Bana stars as Ralph Sarchie, a real life New York City street cop who is thrust into the demonic and supernatural world when he tries to solve a case that deals with sacrificed babies and demonic writings. If you love scary movies, you should enjoy DELIVER US FROM EVIL!!!
