Yippee-Ki-yaa Martha Washington!

Seriously, folks. If it wasn't incredibly obvious from the previews this is another PG-13 Die Hard with a different protagonist. It's got all the hilarious quotable quips, loud explosions, elevator climbing, crashing, bullet-flying, popcorn action you'd expect. It's smartly written, well-acted, and entertaining from beginning to end. Is it ridiculous? Absolutely. Is it silly? Very. It's absolutely what you want and expect from a Die Hard movie. It's also the most likable Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx have ever been in my opinion (yes, I actually sat through Step Up, She's the Man, Ray, and Stealth, slightly more traumatized with each new film).
If you are expecting Independence Day or Stargate levels of over-the-top sci-fi battle-royale-with-cheese you will be disappointed. If you just want a rollicking good time with a Die Hard flick set in the White House you're probably going to love this movie. It doesn't have a SINGLE annoying character and I actually laughed at the jokes. The performances by the superb cast are uniformly excellent. The sound, effects, camera-work, and overall direction of the film do not disappoint. Highly recommended to action fans who like things on the over-the-top entertaining side you can crunch popcorn to and wash down with a Slurpee.

The contrast of directors cut and the theatrical
on May 4, 2015

Verified Purchase:Yes
I'm primarily interested in the storyline differences between the Director's Cut and its theatrical counterparts, so here are the differences between the two (NOTE: SPOILERS FOLLOW).
The Director's Cut runs about 12 minutes longer than the theatrical cut. No additional gore has been added although additional F-bombs have been added. Ethan Hawke makes a surprise appearance in a scene that was cut from the theatrical movie.
(1) Extra scene of Quaid meeting with a Human Resources Management representative from the Cohaagen administration who requests that he sign a non-disclosure agreement given that he works at a sensitive defense production factory. (I can see why this was cut as it didn't add much to the overall storyline.)
(2) Extra scene of scantily clad women in Rekall neighborhood. (The three mammary gland-ed lady still makes the same appearance with topless nudity.)
(3) In the scene where Quaid finds the hidden holographic piano recording in his apartment, it has been altered to show Ethan Hawke as the old Quaid, revealing that Cohaagen also gave Quaid facial reconstructive surgery. (This was an interesting twist which I wished they had left in. It explains why no one was able to recognize him.)
(4) When Quaid and Melina escape from Lori in the elevator action sequence, there is a re-inserted shot of the destroyed elevator plunging onto the roadway below and destroying a hover car. (Pretty neat CGI!)
(5) During the UFB assault on Matthias's base, there is an extra shot of a white combat synth gunning down some hapless Resistance members.
(6) Melina is revealed to be Matthias's daughter. Cohaagen also refers to Melina as Matthias's daughter, rather than lieutenant.
(7) Cohaagen talks a little more about his plan to use Quaid to lead to Matthias, revealing that it was Quaid's idea to have his memory wiped in order to feign allegiance to Matthias.
(8) When Cohaagen has Quaid strapped to the chair, Quaid instead yells an F-word laced expletive at Cohaagen.
(9) When Cohaagen ponders what to do with Melina, she spits in his face and screams the F-word, whereas in the theatrical cut she says "Never!"
(10) The climactic final fight is slightly longer, showing an additional shot of UFB black-clad special forces troops getting gunned down by Melina and the fight between Cohaagen's black painted super-synth bodyguard and Quaid is slightly longer.
And that's it. The biggest addition is Ethan Hawke's reinserted scene.
I enjoyed the Total Recall re-make, even if it lacked some of the campy humor and ridiculous gore of Paul Verhoeven's original. I give it five stars for completely shallow reasons- Kate Beckinsale! Hello. Heck if I were Quaid and married to Kate Beckinsale I'd forget about Rekall. Jessica Biel is easy on the eyes too. The re-make is darker and more serious, akin to Minority Report meets Total Recall. It seems to combine elements from both the Arnold film and Philip Dick's "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale".
In a nod to the Verhoeven film, Harry and Quaid talk about going to Mars, a synthetic thug loses his arm, a similar looking "two weeks" woman walks by customs, Quaid uses holograms, Federal police engage in a zero-G gunbattle with Quaid, and the iconic three breasted woman makes an appearance. Missing of course are the memorable Johnny Cab, Benny, the poor sap who gets perforated on the escalator, and Kuato.
The action scenes are well staged even if TDI Vector sporting Federal police are mowed down like stormtroopers. The technology is fascinating, especially "The Fall" and hand insertable phones. The Colony's populace has a distinct Asian overtone and is more Blade Runner-esque. The UFB is probably situated in England to make Beckinsale's native accent more convenient.
I only wish they had made a hard R-version rather than pander to the PG-13 desires of studio executives.

I had low expectations when I decided to download the pilot episode. After the utter failure of 'The Cape' and other superhero TV shows ruined with poor acting, poor action and plots that could have been written by a 10 year old, who can blame me for expecting Arrow to be another loser. However, I actually came away impressed ... and I am not that easily impressed.
First, the selection of Stephen Amell as Green Arrow was excellent. I was worried the role would go to a male model more concerned with being pretty than being a hardened man on a mission. With Stephen Amell as Green Arrow you get a guy who comes off more as an MMA fighter, which makes Arrow so much more believable. The action scenes are crisp and effective. Arrow starts out with grit and has an edgy quality that keeps you interested. The plot contains plenty of room for mystery and the dialogue/acting is pretty good. It makes no difference if you are a Green Arrow fan or not, this show is about enjoying a unique action hero. Maybe a bit too much glorification of 'taking the law into your own hands' but, OK, maybe we'll see if the main character grows beyond this.
This appears to be a Canadian production. That may explain why the producers of Arrow seems to be taking more risks in making a DC comic action hero into an actual action hero (and showing a bit more respect for the intelligence of superhero fans young and old).
I look forward to seeing more from this series. One thing the producers could add - a touch of humor. Nothing sets up an audience for action and dramatic twists than a touch of humor (the Firefly TV show first comes to mind as well and the most recent Avengers film). And, that's why I went with 4 stars instead of 5.
Like super heroes? Check out Arrow. Let's see if we can keep this on the air a few years.

Boasting enigmatic performances

I'll be honest, I have both Taken and Taken 2 in my collection. I did not really see a need for a 3rd, but we all know movie studios (namely Fox) capitalize off of a franchise they see to be successful. And that being said we have the movie Tak3n.
Tak3n brings back Bryan Mills who again is trying to live a normal life. Bryan's ex-wife Lenore is having second thoughts about her current marriage to Stuart-and beginning to rekindle her feelings toward Bryan. After Bryan later receives a text from Lenore requesting to meet at his place to bring bagels, Bryan buys the bagels and arrives home; but what he arrives home to is something not even he saw coming.
Liam Neeson is fantastic once again as the character Bryan Mills. Possessing both uncanny intelligence and elite fighting skills, he shows an unstoppable determination to solve the mystery of the movie. Maggie Grace does a great job too as his daughter Kim-which in all the movies, I think the bond they share gives these movies a more emphatic vibe; a man going high and low to ensure the safety of the people he cares most about. Famke Janssen returns as Lenore and does a good job, while Dougray Scott plays her ever so insecure husband Stuart. And Forest Whitaker does a Really nice job playing Inspector Franck Dotzler. He's not as easily fooled as the other cops in the movie are, and he and Bryan go back and forth with each other in terms of who's telling the truth and who isn't.
The action in the movie is similar to the action scenes in the others, but there are still a few more explosions and surprises to be had in the movie. The story progresses mostly as it should; BUT at a point in the movie I kept telling myself things are becoming a little too predictable which is not exciting for a movie of this caliber. Sometimes the lines an actor says just feels like it can be a bit too much/'unnecessary for the type movie this is. Then too, the primary villain just is uninteresting and does not look exactly threatening. Even so, Taken 3 or (Tak3n if you prefer) manages to still be a worthy successor to the 2nd movie even if it's not better than the first; due to the lead actors/actresses, the action sequences, and the different direction of the (not entirely satisfying) but still good story.
All this being said, while Taken 3(or Tak3n if you prefer) is nowhere near the quality of the 2008 film, my sincere hope is that you enjoy it because Taken 3 is
An Above Average Experience

Works great but with a few minor issues

This ram is an excellent deal if you can purchase it below its MSRP of $79.99, however, there are some issues you'll have to tackle before you can get it to the specifications listed. This RAM will inform your BIOS that it should run at 1333 MHz. You may want to overclock it to its rated frequency before you begin using your system. Warranties at this stage shouldn't be a problem, because you've purchased memory listed at that speed. In summary, it works well. It gets lower ratings in benchmarks than more expensive memory, but that is just to be expected. It looks nice and doesn't interfere with my heatsink. I'd recommend it if you're willing to do the work on it.

An Honest 4.5 it fell just a little short

Big Hero 6 is a movie that intrigues me on a lot of levels. It ought to have everything going for it.
It's based on a Marvel property (which I didn't even realize until I was seeing the movie (I can't say what gave it away (okay, I could, but that would be a spoiler))). That said, it's based on a Marvel property that I'm not actually familiar with so this is the rare adaptation (from a comic book) that I can see without having a picture in my mind of how it ought to be. Of course, I looked up the comic when I got home, and the path of adaptation they chose for this one is really interesting.
The comic is loosely set in the X-Men side of Marvel so has the full spectrum of mutants and all of that. The movie has removed everything that isn't technology based or transformed those things into something that is technology based. Basically, they made Big Hero fit into a slightly futuristic world in which people are still just people. And they did a really good job of it, too.
The movie does a great job with the exposition of the story. It's so typical of movies these days to just skip the exposition entirely, so I really appreciate it when a film takes the time to provide a foundation for the story they want to tell. Without having a way to check the timing on the movie, I'm going to guess the first half hour or so is all exposition. Let me re-say what I just said before: I like that!
Visually, the movie is incredible. Not just that it has great animation, but it has a great style. Actually, it looks a lot like The Incredibles, but that's not surprising considering that John Lasseter produced the movie.
Plus, it has the best drunken robot scene ever. Okay, that may not be surprising since it's probably the only drunken robot scene ever, but, still, it's hilarious.
The voice acting is adequate. There's nothing there to make any of it stand out except, maybe, for Scott Adsit, but it's hard to tell how much of that is him and how much is manipulation of his voice to make it work for Baymax.
The villain has a really cool look. That's all I'm saying about that. I mean, I'd be freaked out to have someone like that coming after me.
And the side characters work, too.
It has all the ingredients it needs for me to love it.
But I didn't.
Don't get me wrong; I really liked it; I just didn't love it. And I can't really tell you why other than that I saw the movie playing out the way it was going to go well before it got there. However, that was an interesting experience in-and-of itself, because my kids made the logic jumps the movie wanted them to make so that they would be surprised by what was actually going on when it was revealed at the end. I had to bite my tongue not to spoil it for them. For instance, at one point, my son said something about who the bad guy was, and I almost said, "No, that's not who it is," but I managed to catch myself.
I'm not really sure if that was the problem or not. It might also have been that the main emotional punch of the movie happens toward the beginning, so I had no catharsis at the end.
Really, it's not that important. It's a really good movie. It's great, even. It's just not excellent. It's not a movie I left the theater wanting to see again, which, for me, is the hallmark of an excellent film.
The short film at the beginning, though, that was awesome, and I'd love to see that again.

it cute its fun is seems a tiny bit like the last despicable me but was still a lot of laughing going on. I haven't got a good laugh in a while and I really enjoyed this film. Especially those puns (Nicholas,"cage" them! , Drew, Barry, More power!)..
Anyway, good moral, the story's pretty good..i think it just goes to say that the penguins can really stand on their own and not just extras for the other animals from Madagascar.. Sweet Shitake Mushrooms!

What did you expect Teddy Ruxpin?
on February 20, 2015

Verified Purchase:Yes
After being beat down by Hollywood's recent (say, the last 15 years) interpretation of comedy, I was skeptical of this movie.
But, since it seemed different from your basic mindless, re-hash comedy(Epic Movie), or endless do-over (W. Farrell, J. Carey), thought I'd give it a chance.
After watching Ted, I was actually happy to have taken the time to see it, and that doesn't happen often in this age of re-makes and sequels.
Being 49 years old, it's tough to come across a new, funny comedy. This is definitely one.
Admittedly, there are one, or two, scenes that even made me cringe.
This is NOT a movie for kids, or folks whose laces are tied a bit tight(as noted by a few bad reviews,... 'What did you expect, Teddy Ruxpin?').
Most people will find this quite funny. 'Most'.

awesome blu-ray home theater experience

WOW! I already had all 3 on DVD and decided to get these to go with my new Blu Ray player. It's no wonder they won awards for sound editing. The picture definitely seemed a little clearer than the DVD's but the sound was incredible. Already good on the DVD version in my home theatre this took it to a new level and I'm not regretting the $65 for upgrading my set. The best thing about it was I have a Sony Blu Ray and a Sony 7:1 AV receiver. Every movie I've played I've had to cycle through my settings to get the best sound. I'm not sure if it was just this movie, my set-up or what but it wouldn't let me change the setting before the movie got started saying it wasn't used. The sound was absolutely perfect so I'm glad it didn't let me mess with it. Motorcylces racing from back left to front right speaker, gun shots echoing and traveling through from front to back. My son and I were laughing at times at how cool the sound was. Visually I use an HD projector that throws a very clear 100 inch picture, I lose a little video quality but this was the best home theatre experience I've had. The movies are great but the Blu Ray version is incredible with the proper set-up. I have other Blu Ray movies that have not provided as good of an experience as these.

After hearing all the negative comments about this movie I was hesitant to go to the Theater and watch this film. I enjoyed KickAss a lot so I dragged myself to go see KickAss 2....And I'm Glad I did! I'm sure everyone has their own reasons for disliking this movie but I thought it was Great. The characters are older and let me just say this..Hit Girl is AWESOME! She's my favorite character and KickAss has been working out!! He looks Great, too. I'm not a big Jim Carrey Fan but he did very well in this role. I'm not sure which KickAss movie I like better? But, I own the first one and I'm definitely going to own the second one. I can't wait for KickAss 3, The Final Installment to see where all this ends? As long as Hit Girl and KickAss stay alive it's all good.
