Cool design, works well for phone calls, pricy.
on July 29, 2019

These Bose noise cancelling 700 promise to be a step up from the QC35 as far as noise cancelling and with 4 microphones to discern ambient sound from your voice and block the background noises while you’re on a call. More details on this below.
Setup:
I found the Bose app to be a bit finicky. I was able to setup easier with the phones Bluetooth setting app vs the Bose app. But even if the headphones are connected to my phone directly via Bluetooth, the app doesn’t recognize it. It took another try or two to connect through the app. Included in the box is a nice case to safely store your headphones, a USB-C cable for charging and a standard 3.5mm audio cable.
I found the headphones to be very comfortable overall. The ear pieces are comfortable as is the head band. After wearing for hours, I didn’t experience any discomfort from the headband or the ear cups. It is summer, so it was very warm especially walking outside.
Sound test:
The sound quality is excellent, perfect amount of base, crisp, clear audio. I listen to all types of music from morning talk radio, dance hits, top 40 to Piano Guys. I love the sound profile out of the box, of course this is subjective, some might prefer different levels of base etc.
While the controls may seem gimmicky at first, they work well and are intuitive. For me, it took a bit of getting use to, while repositioning the headphones, I inadvertently skipped to the next track. After a few days, I got used to it and didn’t have any more miscues.
Phone call:
This is truly where the Bose 700 shine, making phone calls in loud environments. I had this exact conversation with my friend recently. I noticed if I was speaking to him and I were to hold the iPhone to me ear, it sounds very good on the other end, my voice is audible and not much background noises. If I used a Bluetooth headset, and it didn’t matter which brand, they picked up all the background noise and the person I’m speaking with couldn’t hear me well at all. So the noise canceling on the iPhone doesn’t work when you’re on a Bluetooth headset…until now!
I first tested this out in mid-town Manhattan, my friend wasn’t able to hear all the hustle bustle sounds that I was hearing, instead the background noises were muffled and he was able to hear my voice. If the occasional emergency vehicle passed by, he would hear it. Next, I tried this out in the hallway of an aquatic center where my son was having a swim meet. In the lobby with about 30 people, parents and kids, the NC700 again shined. It was able to suppress the noise so I can have a conversation. I was very impressed so far, so I tried another cal inside the pool area where there’s a lot of background noise, screaming coaches and kids…not so good here. The person I was speaking (read: wife) to got annoyed and hung up. Another comment I received from a friend while speaking to him in Manhattan was that I sounded like I was in a fishbowl! So while he could hear me, the audio sounded off.
Conclusion:
If you need to use your phone in noisy environments often and these headphones are for you! I can see someone who makes a lot of calls while out on the field a lot needing these. In general, I think most people text these days and use voice calls less. They’re on the pricy side, so if you don’t need to speak in loud environments, you may want to look at the QC35’s.

Excellent full featured all in one printer!!
on July 22, 2019
Posted by: Gizmo
from New Jersey
Overview
The HP LaserJet Pro M479fdw is a multifunction device, it can print in color, scan, fax and copy. Its big and a bit on the heavy side, 50lbs and sits 16” tall. The box advises you to tip over and pull out on its side, good advice! My printer arrived packed very securely, all the flaps and covers were taped to minimize movement during shipping. This is my first laser printer in a long time. I noticed you no longer have to pull out a strip on the toner cartridges and risk getting ink powder on the floor. Once the packaging has been removed, just plug it in and setup.
Setup:
The LCD screen is a pleasure to use, unlike my current printer, an older inkjet, this LCD screen is large (approximately 4.25” corner to corner), bright (brightness adjustable), the on-screen keyboard is precise and the screen feels sturdy, doesn’t flop around when you press the buttons. Basic setup was simple, type in your WiFi password, follow the prompts. In addition to setting up the printer on WiFi, (I didn’t use USB cable), I also enabled HP ePrint (under “web services”). This feature allows you to email print jobs to the printer from anywhere by simply emailing your unique HP ePrint email address. The printer will provide you with a unique eprint email. This feature is great especially if you have technology challenged family members you need to occasionally send stuff to, like I do. Rather then calling and walking them through how to print an attachment each time, I just email the printer.
Setup to “Scan to network”:
I have a NAS (network attached storage), I wanted to set up scanning directly to a folder the network drive. I found this to be not as straightforward as it should be. All the printer settings can be access through a web browser, simply type the printer’s IP address, for example, 192.168.1.100. In the “SCAN” – “SCAN TO NETWORK” you can set your default scan settings, such as paper size, double sided, file name prefix or suffix. But it doesn’t have the “folder path” here. To set up a folder to scan to, you have to go to “ADDRESS BOOK” – “CONTACTS” and create an entry here under UNC Folder Path. I think it would’ve been more intuitive to have put this setting under “SCAN TO NETWORK”. ON a side note, this scanner can scan both sides of the page with 1 pass.
Performance:
The copy, scan and print quality of this printer is excellent! The text on the print outs are very crisp and sharp, exactly as I expected from a laser printer. I was surprised how nicely pictures print out, although I’ll probably keep my inkjet printers for that. Air Print works flawlessly with my idevices. There are many different ways to print from the printer, you can connect directly with WiFi Direct, Bluetooth, air print, USB drive, Google drive, Dropbox and perhaps the most common, USB cable, WiFi or wired ethernet cable. There are almost too many options, if there’s such a thing. I printed a test page from https://printatestpage.com/ to compare my current inkjet to the color laser, the text is sharper and the images more saturated on the laser. For home usage, the difference isn’t a big deal. The inkjet is fine for most if not all printing tasks of a typical household plus inkjets still print photos better.
Overview:
If you need a printer for high volume, this multifunction laser printer is an excellent choice. With print speeds of 27 pages per minute and monthly cycle of up to 50,000 pages, this printer is suitable for an office environment.
Pros:
1. Excellent print quality
2. Myriad of connectivity options
3. Many options of there to “Scan to” (email, network folder, USB drive, dropbox, Google drive)
4. Nice display screen, intuitive menu’s
Cons:
1. Printer cost.
2. Would be nice if the 3 buttons (Return to prev, Home, Help) under the display screen lit up.

The smart doorbell I didn’t know I needed!
on May 28, 2019
Posted by: Gizmo
from New Jersey
Overview:
The SkyBell TRIM plus is an alternative to other brands of smart doorbells, RING, Nest, Arlo, etc. These have become increasingly popular, probably due to increasing trend in delivered package thefts. I chose the SkyBell over other because they offer 7 days of free recordings, you can view or download your recordings for 7 days. Other smart doorbells require a subscription, for instance, RING is $3/month or $30 annually. Not that $3/month will break the bank, but with all the monthly fees most people have, (cable TV, Netflix, Hulu, cell phone…) who needs a fee from their doorbell?
Initially, I wasn’t crazy about the design of the doorbell, it’s very contemporary and I wasn’t crazy about the “Skybell” letters on the doorbell button (they do offer an “oil rubbed bronze” version). One of the best feature is the LED and letters can be any color! In the app, you can go into setup to change the color. I tried to match the color of my bricks.
Unboxing and installation:
The package included everything I needed to install the SkyBell onto by brick wall. Screwdriver, plastic anchors and screws and a drill bit. I was surprised the included drill bit was for masonry, saved me a trip to the toolbox! I removed the old doorbell, re-used one of the existing holes and made a new one for the top of the SkyBell. Make sure the wires are tucked out of the way on the mounting plate, otherwise when you go to screw the doorbell on, it won’t fit in easily. I had to reposition my wires a few times, when you tighten the small screws, it tends to move the wire to where you don’t want it (see photos). Overall, the physical installation took about 10-15 minutes from start to finish, very simple.
App setup:
To complete the setup, I downloaded the app “SkyBell HD”. Very simple to setup the app, the app walks you through it step by step. Setup user name and password, connect to SkyBell’s WiFi and in minutes, it’s done. The doorbell should be a green color when you’re done, as opposed to the flashing orange and green.
In the app, you can manage the following: notifications, chime, motion detection, speaker volume video quality and LED color. I can’t think of any option that I would like to have that is not in there.
Performance:
After 2 weeks of usage, I found the SkyBell works very well. I didn’t have any issues with it. My kids came home, rang the bell, I was able to speak to them via the app. The speaker is loud and they can hear me clearly. I noticed peoples faces come across a bit dark, this is 2:00 in the afternoon on a cloudy day. So like any other camera, it takes a second or two for it to adjust the exposure. If the person ringing the bell stays in front of the camera, the exposure will adjust and the dark face, due to the bright sunlight being behind them, will adjust and you can see their face. If they’re moving around a lot, like kids often do, it’s a bit tougher for the camera to adjust and their faces might stay dark.
I found the motion sensor to work well and consistent, when we walk out the front door, it’ll pick up the movement and send an alert letting you know motion has been detected. The app allows you to adjust the sensitivity on the motion sensor, I have it set on “Medium”.
Alexa app:
This is where some of the criticism is, while it claims to be Alexa enabled, you can’t see the camera on your Alexa Show! The Alexa app can do things such as turn on quiet mode, take a snapshot, or take a video. I didn’t even bother enabling the Alexa skill for this. Hopefully they will add streaming video to Alexa soon.

Conclusion
I like this doorbell a lot, I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone shopping for a smart doorbell. I was chatting with a co-worker that owns a RING doorbell, it seems that ring app has a delay launching, comparing our apps side to side, both on an iPhone Xs, the SkyBell launches much faster. I was viewing live video feed about 2-3 seconds before his. A few seconds is not a lot, but when you’re waiting for an app to launch, seems like a long time.

Excellent charger, with a few caveats.
on May 22, 2019
Posted by: Gizmo
from New Jersey
Not having to plug in wires to charge your iPhone is great! We went from that old 30 pin charger, to the lightning connector and now wireless!
The Belkin Qi works great for the most part. I recently upgraded to the iPhone Xs, although the Belkin Boost Up charging pad can charge at 10W, the iPhones can charge at a max of 7.5w. The charger does a decent job and charges my phone fairly quickly. I like that there is a LED indicator to let you know when it is charging. The LED can be misleading when you have any type of metal on your phone case. White LED means it’s charging, amber means it’s not. It would be nice if the light to indicate not charging was more obvious, like blinking red, or even a subtle audible alert.
On a few occasions, myself and family members had an issue where we thought the phone was charging properly but when we checked after 2 hours or so, the battery was at the same level. When I initially placed my phone on the pad, the LED turns white to indicate charging, after 4-5 seconds, it turned Amber. This was due to either the metal disc I have in my case (for car mount) or improper placement on the charging pad. The charger should be fine for cases up to 3mm thick.
Below are the time it took to charge my iPhone Xs.
Charging speed:
iPhone Xs % increase and length of time charge:
Belkin Qi pad: Battery went from 23% to 73% in 1 hour and 20 minutes. 50% increase
Apple 5W plug, wired charge: 28% to 74% in 1 hour and 20 minutes. 46% increase
Apple 10W (iPad) charger: 36% to 97% in 1 hour and 20 minutes. 61% increase
From the above results, as expected, the 10W iPad charger charged the fastest, followed by the Qi wireless at 7.5W and then the 5W iPhone plug.
Conclusion:
If this charger works for you, meaning your case is less then 3mm thick and you don’t have any metal on your phone case for magnetic mounts, that’s great, buy it, it’s convenient. If you have any of those conditions described, stick to the wired charger. A positive for wired chargers, when it’s plugged in, you know!

Comfort of a foam mattress, w/o any of the cons!
on May 1, 2019
Posted by: Gizmo
from New Jersey
Overview:
The Sealy To Go Hybrid Mattress arrived in an unusually small box, for any mattress, let alone a queen size mattress! It’s a bit on the heavy side, you’ll probably need 2 people, although my UPS guy brought in by himself. The instructions, that I read after the fact, tells you to cut the plastic wrap with scissors and not a knife. It also instructs you to air out in a well ventilated room for 24-72 hours…oops. We unpacked it, my son and I jumped right on it. It was still very comfortable. There was a bit of an oder, but that went away fairly quickly.
Comfort
I’ve been using a memory foam pillow for years and I love it. I’ve always wanted to try a foam mattress but was concerned about drawbacks I’ve heard about, such as foam mattresses retains body heat. This Sealy mattress is a combination of traditional coils with a memory foam layer. After sleeping on this mattress for over a week, I’m happy to report, this is one of the most comfortable mattresses I’ve slept on! One thing I’ve noticed with my old, traditional mattress, if I wake up and lie in bed for another hour or two, my back starts to ache. With the new one, I don’t have that problem. I can waste the whole day away on my iPad and no pain! As for the foam mattress retaining body heat, I have not yet noticed that happening, although the weather in the northeast has not been very warm, about mid 50’s. Perhaps the hybrid design of coil spring and a foam layer does not retain body heat.
Conclusion
My old mattress is only about 3-4 years old and was fairly expensive, it’s a traditional coil spring mattress with a thin foam layer. While the difference in comfort between my old mattress and this new one isn’t dramatically different, I like the newer one better since my back doesn’t ache on it when lying on it for extended periods of time. The Sealy To Go Hybrid offers a lot for the price. If I had to replace my kid’s mattresses, I would definitely consider these!

Turtle Beach - RECON 70 Wired Stereo Gaming Headset for Nintendo Switch - Red/Black
The Turtle Beach RECON 70 headset is just what my daughter was looking for! She plays games on the Nintendo Switch with her siblings and needed a headset to communicate with. These Turtle beach RECON’s are nicely designed, simple, not too large, not too small. The red and black color scheme is nice.
These are constructed from plastic with leatherette cushioning on the headband and of course, the ear pieces. It looks nice and feel sturdy. They’re fairly comfortable as well. My daughter, who is 8, doesn’t have any problems using them. I’ve tried them on as well and they’re comfortable. If I were to use them for longer periods, I’d probably want to stretch them out a bit by putting over a towel. The cord feels nice, silicone type, decent quality. You cannot unplug it from.
The sound quality is between good to very good, for this price point, it’s great. If you’re an audiophile or hardcore gamer, you probably want to look for something better. Overall a nice looking headset with solid performance and a great price!

Nice upgrade from V8!
on March 31, 2019
Posted by: Gizmo

The Dyson v11 Animal is definitely an upgrade to the V8 Animal I currently own. I love the v8 and v11 is even better. The battery lasts a little more than 60 minutes, enough time to vacuum my two-story home. The suction power does not fade when the battery runs low. The Auto mode works well, easily adapting suction going from tiles, hardwood and carpets. The bin is a nice size, larger than the v8’s bin. The only negative is that long hairs gets stuck at the top of the bin when emptying. (My wife and daughter both have long hair). It takes several pushes of the lever to get the hairs unstuck. I see this as a minor inconvenience, I would still recommend this vacuum. I am in awe every time I use this vacuum, I’m so impressed by how much fine dust it pulls out of carpets and rugs.

Exc. gaming laptop with the latest and greatest!
on March 31, 2019
Posted by: Gizmo
from New Jersey
Overview:
When you open the box, the first thing you may notice is the clean, bold design. The vents are angular and made from metal, sort of reminds me of a tank, it feels solid! The Alien logo on the cover lights up and the color can be changed with the “Alien Command Center” software. At almost 6 lbs, this is not the laptop you want to lug around unless you plan to be gaming! The packaging is very simple, you get a laptop and a charger. The charger is quite large, it measures 8”x4”. This is by far the largest charger I’ve had for any laptop! Since the corners of the screen (where the hinges are located) are angled, when you open the lid, you get this sort of weird triangle seam on the corner. My son didn’t like it, I wasn’t bothered by it, it is unique as other laptops are usually a straight line. I thought it was fine.
Performance:
This laptop is a beast, it features the Nvidia Geforce RTX2070 GPU with 8GB video memory, Intel i7-8750 processor and and 16GB of DDR4 RAM, I didn’t expect any lag or other issues with the games I play. Admittingly, the games my kids and I play are not “AAA” games, they include Fortnite, Overwatch, Battlefront and Call of Duty WWll. Even with the settings for Fortnite on “Epic”, the laptop performed great, no lagging at 56-60FPS and 6.7ms. The laptop gets very warm, the fan stays fairly quiet, even at high speeds, it’s not very loud or obvious.
The 17” display is an IPS panel at 1080P with a refresh rate of 60Hz. The colors and viewing angles are great, no issues.
There is a good selection of I/O ports, HDMI 2.0, Mini display port, USB-C, 3xUSB 3.1. I was able to output this to 65” TV with no issues. Note: There is no CD/DVD drive. I guess these are becoming obsolete, but every once in a while, they come in handy.
The keyboard is backlit, you can also change the color and lighting pattern on it. It feels, well, plain. Not much different from any other laptop I have.
Speakers: I found the sound quality to be very good, there is no mention of speaker brand used. For gaming, you would be using a headset anyway, but it’s nice to know if you stream music or watch a movie, the speakers are quite loud and clear.
The 60WHR battery, depending what you’re doing on the laptop, can run out quickly. If you’re playing games, you’ll want it plugged in.
Conclusion:
Overall, this is a beautiful laptop, if you want a gaming laptop with all the bells and whistles, this is the one you want! However, if you don’t need the latest graphics and processor, you can find a similar Alienware 17” for much less.

Great choice for active athletes - waterproof!
on February 18, 2019
Posted by: Gizmo
from New Jersey
These days, there are so many choices when it comes to wireless earbuds. Everyone company that makes headphones/earphones is introducing wireless earbuds! For the most part, all the ones I’ve tested so far are all very good as far as sound quality, (Apple, Bose, Jabra, and of course Jaybird). That said, a big part of the deciding factor may come from other criteria such as size, how well they fit and usability. This past week, I had the privilege to test the new Jaybird RUN XT! One of the major improvements over original RUN earbuds is the IPX7 water resistance rating. The original RUN did not have an IPX rating. What the IPX7 rating means is that these can be immersed in water up to 1 meter in depth. The rating scale of IPX 1-7 varies from water dripping on them, to being splashed with water and with 7, being immersed in water.
Included in the box: 2 earbuds, 3 sizes of fittings, a USB cable and a charging case that resembles a giant pill. This charging case stores your earbuds and provides an additional 8 hours of charging time for a total of up to 12 hours!
Setup:
These earphones are very easy to setup, just like any other bluetooth device, you simply pair it to your phone. However, these can only be paired to one device at a time. If it’s connected to my iPad, I would have to manually disconnect it.
Downloading the JayBird App will allow you to customize the sound, there are some sound presets or you can create your own sound profile. I found this app to be a must have as the sound quality out of the box was flat. With the app, you can “customize” your button settings. It’s basically standard mode, where you can use the buttons on the left and right earbuds to control music and use Siri for use to control volume. Not the most robust customization but good to have an option. I chose to leave it in default mode and use my physical phone buttons to control the volume. The app also has a “Find My Buds” feature that allows you to locate your earbuds if you misplace them.
Usability:
Each earbud comes with 3 outer and 3 inner fittings. I found the middle ones that came attached worked for me. Also, what I noticed is that these headphones have to be in your ear good and snug for the base levels to sound good. The rubber tip should be almost inside your ear canal. For me, that took a few seconds of fidgeting. The sound quality out if the box was okay, the equalizer settings on the app helped. The right earbud is the master, you can take off the left earbud and put it in the case and the right will continue to work. This is nice when you’re walking in the streets so you can be aware of your surroundings. If I take off the right, the left continues to work until I place the right info the case.
Playtime: according to manufacturers specs, fully charged RUN XT’s can last 4 hours. Then you would use the charging case to charge them up again. The case can charge the earbuds up to 8 hours additional. A 5 minute quick charge provides 1 hour of use. In the week that I’ve used these, this seems accurate. When you place them in the case, the 3 LED’s let you know the charge status, green for charged and red on the middle LED lets you know the case itself needs charging.
Pros:
1. I like the size of these earbuds, they’re not very large and don’t stick out much when you’re using them.
2. Secure fit - With 3 sets of silicone inserts, finding a comfortable fit should be easy. I used these while jogging and working out at the gym, I did not have any issues with them falling out. After a few minutes, you forget they’re there.
3. Play time of 4 hours +8 hours with the case is very good, the charging case measures about 3” and 1 1/2” in diameter (see my “cons”).
4. Very good sound quality, on a scale of 1-10, I would give these a 7 for sound.
Cons (in the order of annoyance):
1. When I’m in a music app and switch to video, such as YouTube, the sound disconnects. I would have to pause and hit play for the audio to come through the earbuds.
2. Intermittent drop out - the left earbud occasionally disconnected on me.
3. Case design: the case, although attractive and sturdy, is an oval pill. For men’s pant pockets, it’s on the large side. Also, I find the button to open the case can be inadvertently pressed easily. When I had it in my gym bag and weekend bag, it opened a few times accidentally. When that happens, all the audio is routed to the earbuds when I didn’t want it to. See my photo for size comparison as compared to another brands.
4. Button placement: the button on the earbuds is on the end of the earphone, to press the button, you have to press it towards your ear, this can sometimes be uncomfortable as the earphones are already deep in your ear.
5. If you plan on using these for phone calls, note that these are mono, the voice comes out of the right ear only.
Overall, in spite of the cons I’ve listed, they are very nice and capable earbuds for active individuals. If you are concerned with water hazards (mud runs perhaps) or sweat a lot, these would be the earbuds you want. If the IPX7 rating is not critical, check the offerings from other brands before jumping in these.

The Dyson Pure Hot + Cool is the only purifying heater + fan to clean a whole room properly. To simultaneously purify and heat a whole room properly, the Dyson Pure Hot+CoolTM purifying heater + fan goes beyond standard tests by automatically sensing pollution, capturing ultrafine pollutants, and projecting purified and heater air using Air MultiplierTM technology. It is the only purifying heater + fan designed and tested to do this.¹

Excellent hot cold fan and HEPA filter combination
on January 22, 2019

from New Jersey
Pros:
1. App control
2. Alexa enabled
3. Quiet
4. Heats up room quick
5. HEPA filter
6. Clean design
7. Magnetic remote storage
8. Unlike traditional heaters, no hot surfaces exposed
Cons:
1. App and Alexa cannot turn on heat (not Dyson’s fault, some UL safety standard)
2. Pricy device
3. Filter replacement cost
Overview:
Before receiving this Dyson hot and cool fan + HEPA filter to test, I recently purchased a AM09, a Dyson hot and cold fan without a filter. I was a bit surprised to see how much larger the HP04 is! The base is fairly thick to accommodate the filters. It’s about 10” wide, 30” tall and weighs 12 lbs. It is very easy to setup, just need to install the filter, plug into wall and you’re read to go. I like that there are no exposed heating elements for the kids to burn their hands on or moving blades. The entire fan can pivot on the base to aim higher or lower, a feature my AM09 did not have.
Operation:
The included remote can control everything, on/off, hot, cold, oscillate, vent out the front of the back. When you’re done with the remote, you can store it face down on the top of the fan, the magnetic catch will hold the remote securely, a nifty feature. The iOS or Android app does the same, except you can control it from anywhere. You can do things such as turning on the heat to warm up a room before you get home. The one thing the app DOES NOT allow you to do is to control the heat. If you turn on “cool” with the app and want to go back to “heat” mode, you can’t. This seems to be a safety rule (UL 1278) and not a Dyson capability issue. This fan is also Alexa enabled, with Alexa, you can turn on the fan, set device speed, ask for temperature, humidity levels and more. Again, like the remote, you can’t adjust the heating temperature or turn it from cold to hot.
Performance:
The Dyson heating fan operates fairly quietly, at level 10, it does make a fair amount of noise. If you’re watching TV, you’d need to bump up the volume a bit. The noise is more tolerable at level 8. As a test to see how quickly the fan can warm up a room, I ran the fan in my room (approximately 25’x16’). Starting temp was 67 degrees, by the end of 20 minutes, it was 68 degrees (outside temp 27). So depending on the size of your room, it can take some time to make a noticeable difference. There’s an automatic setting as well, set it to the desired temp and the fan will do the rest.
I was able to tell my room temperature from the 1” circular LCD screen on the fan. It gives you info such as air quality, inside temp and temperature the fan is set to. The app also shows you the temperature, humidity as well as graphs on temperature history.
The filter portion will come in handy this Spring during allergy season. The HEPA filter + carbon filter costs $80 to replace, annual replacement is recommended.
Overall, I really like this hot cold fan. Not only is it nice to look at, but it performs well. If you can get pass the price, and the price of the filter (1 star subtracted for cost), I would definitely recommend it.
