Ditch the mop

The Bissell Crosswave is perfect for those who don’t like to mop (me). I love that the Crosswave vacuums and mops at the same time, doing two jobs at once. Also, it cleans the floor and sucks up the dirty water instead of moving it around like a mop. I have only used it on tile so far but they are noticeably cleaner after use. It doesn’t do a deep cleaning but it is as good as a mop and perfect for maintaining your floors. Beyond tile, it works with hard wood floors, laminate, and even area rugs!
Clean up is a little involved; you run the Crosswave on its storage tray with water for a few seconds to clean the roller and intake, then you remove the waste tank, remove hair strainer, empty waste tank, rinse everything off and let air dry. Despite the steps involved, it is fairly easy and doesn’t take more then 5 minutes. I wish the waste tank was slightly larger, but I imagine that would of added unwanted bulk to the lightweight design. I am really pleased with the Crosswave and recommend it to those not just with pets but anyone who is looking for a better way to clean their floors!

Decent Outdoor Antenna

The Mohu Sail is a nice outdoor antenna for cable cutters or those looking to receive local broadcast TV. I bought one of Mohu’s indoor antennas but I had trouble with the TV stations dropping out constantly. Fortunately the Sail performs better, but not sure how much is result of the new antenna or rather placement. Design wise, aesthetically the antenna is nice though the 'sail design' may not be great in windy conditions. Mohu provides mounting hardware, 30’ coax cable, and an amplifier. It is advertised as multi-directional however I found that I had to aim it in the direction of the local stations I wanted to receive. I had hopes of mounting this in the attic but had issues with pixelation on one of the VHF channels my local station broadcasts. With the antenna outside and pointed in the correct direction, I was able to pickup 18 channels of the 35 Mohu estimated would be available in my area. I am still having some pixelation issues but it is far less frequent since installing the Sail outdoors. If you have tried indoor antennas but are having signal issues and channel dropouts the Mohu Sail is a decent upgrade.

Having owned Sonicare toothbrushes for years, I found this one to be a perfect middle ground between their more expensive models and the cheaper options. The ProtectiveClean 5100 is sleeker and lighter then a cheaper model Sonicare I have owned. I like that they included 3 cleaning modes allowing you to do daily cleaning, whitening, and gum care. This model also features the pressure sensor my more expensive model had. The pressure sensor alerts you when you are applying too much pressure by pulsing, a nice touch. Philips includes a chip on the G2 brush head now to track brush life independent of the handle. Some may see this as a way to encourage more frequent replacement of the heads, but there is nothing preventing you from attaching a brush head without a usage chip. I personally like the tracking as sometimes I forget to check the wear indicators on the bristles. The Sonicare 5100 also includes a travel case and charger. I think this model is a perfect for someone looking to try an electric toothbrush or upgrading from a lower cost model.

Decent mid-range headphones

The Sony WH-CH500 are a nice, very basic set of over the ear headphones. They are lightweight, feature simple controls, and offer great battery life. Unfortunately their lightweight and plastic feel make them seem cheap. One nice feature is the headphones pivot so they lay flat, perfect for storing them in my laptop bag. Sound quality is above average, but nothing spectacular. I recommend these to someone looking for a midrange set of headphones with great battery life.

Performance of an upright without the cord

Dyson has a winner with their new design of the Cyclone V10. I own the Motorhead V7 which fell short in a few areas, fortunately Dyson has addressed these issues and now has hands down, the best cordless vacuum I have seen.
To start the V10 offers up to 60 minutes of run time on the base setting of the three modes. Dyson refers to it as ‘base’ instead of low for good reason, it has strong suction even at the lowest setting thanks to the 125,000 RPM ceramic shaft digital motor and the 14 cyclones. I only found myself switching to the higher powerful suction setting when vacuuming hard to reach places. The maximum setting only provided me with 7 minutes of continuous runtime, but I rarely found a need to switch it to that mode. For most of your day to day cleaning the base setting will provide plenty of power and battery life. I feel at the medium (powerful) setting the V10 outperforms my V7 in MAX, which says a lot about the performance of the new motor Dyson has built into the V10.
In addition to the improved performance and battery life, the V10 has a redesigned dust bin/cyclone rotating it 90 degrees. For the most part I liked the change. I feel the vacuum is better balanced and now has increased bin capacity. The bin also can be removed to be cleaned further, another short coming of many cordless vacs I have owned. I am also pleased that Dyson has a removable HEPA filter that can be easily cleaned as well. Though I wouldn’t recommend resting it against a wall, the V10 stays in place thanks to the rubber added to the base of the vacuum and the bottom of the torque drive head. The motorized torque drive head on my model does a great job of cleaning my thick pile rugs on base suction (the V7 would stall on the rugs) without hanging, though it is a bit tall to fit under some of my cabinets. Fortunately, the parts are interchangeable with my V7, a plus if you already own a lower profile head. In addition to the torque drive cleaner head, the Dyson v10 animal includes a great variety of other attachments such as the mini motorized tool, mini soft dusting brush, crevice tool, and combination tool; all of which are easily changed with a one had release button.
Other improvements include battery/clean filter/clog indicators, contoured handle, and faster charging at 3.5 hours. The only negative remark I have is the battery is not removable or user replaceable, but that is hardly a reason to discredit Dyson on what is otherwise a fantastic vacuum. If you are looking for the best cordless vacuum currently on the market, the Dyson V10 is the one to beat.

Nice design, limited sound

The Insignia Speaker is a unique alternative to other smart speakers in that it has a (limited) display allowing it to be utilized as a clock. I intended on using it in the kitchen but found the speaker itself to be lacking. The speaker sounds distorted playing music at the higher volumes necessary to fill a noisy kitchen. I have an original echo and found the audio of this speaker to sound very weak and thin in comparison. The speaker is better suited for a small space where you are looking at replacing an alarm clock rather then adding a high fidelity speaker. The display does provide some useful information beyond the time, such as volume during adjustment or even the temperature when asking about the weather. Ultimately, if you are curious about smart speakers and enjoy rich sounding music look elsewhere; however, if you currently have a smart speaker but are looking to supplement your current setup this is a good addition.

Good cameras, poor implementation

The Arlo Pro 2 is probably the best wire-free camera currently on the market. Where as most wireless cameras sold today require power (typically over USB), the Arlo Pro 2 is completely wire-free allowing you to place the camera virtually anywhere. There is a trade off to this freedom, when operating wire-free the cameras have a reduce feature set that is standard among wireless cameras (activity zones, 24x7 video recording). I found that despite missing these features, being able to install the cameras in places I don’t have an outlet provides better visibility and coverage. The initial setup was easy, taking around 15 minutes to sync the cameras to the basestation and mount them with the provided magnetic wall mounts. The cameras include rechargeable batteries that can be charged with the included charger, an optional solar panel, or even removed for quick replacement. Battery life is fair. After using the cameras for over 2 weeks, the less active camera has 80% charge remaining and the very active one (facing street) has 70% left. I expect to get 1-2 months of battery life on a charge, though you could keep it topped off with the optional solar panel. Motion detection on battery power is good, though a person may be halfway through the frame by the time the camera wakes up. Unfortunately, this were things start to fall apart due to lack of overall product refinement. To start, I am not a fan of having to use a basestation considering the cameras operate over wifi (802.11n). I would have preferred the option to connect them to my existing wifi, reducing the number of things I need to connect to my router (basestation requires ethernet). There is only one USB cable and charger provided for the two camera system, meaning if you would like to wire these to be able to utilize most of the features advertised (3-sec look back, 24x7 CVR, activity zones) you will have to purchase another cable and charger. The included magnetic mounts are great for a flat vertical surface but are limited when mounting under an awning or similar horizontal surface. Again, you can purchase the optional ceiling mount but including the ceiling mount or better designed surface mount would eliminate this inconvenience. Person alerts or detection is missing from the product, meaning you have to view numerous 10-15 second clips to see which were triggered by the neighbors cats and which were triggered by the mail man. Even the number of clips could be reduced if the setting for record until motion stops worked properly. I also had an issue with one of the cameras going offline periodically, though this may have been resolved after the recent firmware update. This brings me to my biggest gripe, the software. The Arlo web app still uses flash while the mobile app (iOS) burns through my battery. Viewing the cameras and reviewing the clips for 10-15 minutes will drain my battery 30-50% (iPhone 7, 11.1.2). Again, these things could be fixed but currently sour the overall experience. For now, it is hard to recommend these cameras but they fit a niche of true wire-free cameras and I am hopeful Netgear will refine the product overtime.

The DEEBOT M81 Pro is a promising take on the robot vac market, offering Alexa integration and an assortment of cleaning modes (auto, spot, edge, max). The M81 Pro includes the standard main brush option, a direct suction option, 4 side brushes ( 1 spare set), remote control, dock, an ‘advanced’ wet/dry reservoir with 2 cloths, and a measuring cup. The direct suction option is for everyday cleaning and to reduce hair tangling on main brush, I found it did a great job on tile/hardwood floors. The main brush worked well, but found it often managed to get hair tangled around it. Ecovacs includes a tool to remove hair and maintain the device, which is conveniently stored in the vac. The bot includes wifi connectivity with Alexa integration, however the 2.4 GHz band was not compatible with my band steering dual-band router. Normally, the access point will direct the client to the correct band but due to the way Ecovacs requires another device (iPhone/Android) to facilitate the setup it kept trying to join my 5 GHz band, failing every time. Make sure you have a legacy device to setup the M81 or a router/AP that can broadcast a 2.4 GHz only network if you want to utilize it’s network features. I was also disappointed with the ‘mopping’ attachment. It barely dampened the floors and always found its way to a carpet, defeating the purpose. Honestly I think a Swiffer type mop is far superior to using the M81 to mop floors, which isn’t saying much. My biggest issue with the M81 is it constantly would get stuck somewhere, usually under my coffee table which is on a rug. The M81 does not detect BotBoundary strips (magnetic strips) so there is not a reasonable way to prevent it from getting stuck in my home. One other gripe is the design of the dust bin. The inlet and access door are on opposite ends with the inlet being covered by a flimsy piece of mylar. Every time I went to empty the bin I would tilt it downward in order to open the access door, causing debris to fall out the inlet. Despite all my issues, I still feel it is a nice robot vac that may work well depending on your environment.

Well designed and quiet

The Shark ION ROBOT 720 does a great job cleaning hard wood, tile, and low carpet floors. Once you sort out any issues the robot has navigating your home, you can set up a schedule and come home to cleaner floors. The schedule feature works great, though I did come home to find it stuck on one of my rugs (high pile). Fortunately Shark provides a boundary strip that can be cut to length, preventing the robot from entering certain areas of your home…..or in my case a rug. In addition to the boundary strip Shark provides a cleaning tool, dock, remote, spare sides brushes, and a replacement HEPA filter, a nice touch. I found the Shark ION ROBOT to be far quieter than my 2-year old premium brand robot vac, a welcome surprise. The large capacity dust bin even hinges open allowing it to be cleaned easily. My only issues with the Shark are it tends to run into dark colored furniture at full speed (same issue with my premium brand robot vac) and it doesn’t fully approach a light colored obstacle or baseboard. Despite it’s tendency to turn around before reaching a wall, I still found it cleans the floors very well. I don’t think this can replace a traditional vacuum due to its poor edging of baseboards but it is still an excellent choice if you are looking to supplement your current cleaning tools.

Almost Perfect

The Sony WF-1000X are a very versatile set of headphones. They are perfect for a multitude of tasks from enjoying music while exercising to listening to an audiobook/podcast while mowing the lawn. Sony was able to accomplish this by offering a comfortable, lightweight set of true wireless (no connecting wire!) headphones that not only are comfortable, but stay in place. Sony provides 2 sets of supporters and 7 different sets of tips, 4 sets of silicone rubber and 3 sets of triple comfort (foam). I was surprised by how comfortable the foam tips were, though I found myself preferring the silicone ones just due to the slight edge they had on staying in place.
Besides providing a perfect fit, these headphones even sound great. Out of the box, the headphones provided great range and rich sound. Being they are truly wireless, the lack of a cable between the earbuds means you don’t have to worry about that annoying feedback that can transmit by moving the connecting wire (microphonics). In addition, these headphones provide optional noise cancelation features that can be customized to fit your activities. I found that while working in the yard I preferred the ‘Noise Cancelling’ option, however ‘Ambient Sound - Voice Mode’ was my go to mode a majority of the time. I enjoyed how it helps block out most noises while still allowing you to hear someone who may be talking to to you. Periodically, you hear the headphones adjust to the changing ambient noise, but it never became a nuisance for me. Also, the noise cancelation can be turned off. The headphones offer basic controls, one headphone changes the noise cancelation mode while the other functions as play/pause or answering phone calls. It would of been nice to have some way to control the volume on the headphones, but I imagine Sony opted to limit the controls in an effort to reduce complexity. Of course, you can control the volume on your phone as well as through the Sony Connect app. The app also provides further control and customization of the noise cancelation modes, equalizer, as well as an Adaptive Sound Control via “Smart Listening”. In my experience, Smart Listening wasn’t able to detect my activities automatically but it isn’t a feature I necessarily would use as I found it very convenient to cycle through the modes by using the button on the left earbud.
Battery life is fair, I averaged close to the advertised three hours depending on my activity. Three hours may be plenty considering the headphones come with a charging case, making it easy to top them off in between listening. The case also provides rapid charging, topping off the headphones for 75 minutes of activity after just 15 minutes of charging inside the case. When combined with the charging case you effectively get about 9 hours of use (2 headphone recharges) before you need to find an outlet to charge. One drawback is these can not be used independently. In order to operate (pair), the left earbud must be on. I would of liked to be able to use one while charging the other, but the bluetooth implementation by Sony prevents this. Hardly a deal breaker, but having slightly better battery life and independent operation would of made these practically perfect.
The Sony WF-1000X are a great set of wireless headphones that come very close to perfection. If you like the idea of truly wireless In-ear headphones that will be comfortable and discrete I highly recommend you consider these.
