VR for the mainstream

The Oculus Quest has nailed the PCVR experience in a portable, wire-free, all-in-one device. When you read claims that the Quest is a game changer they are not exaggerating. It is the first of what will be the future of VR, period.
Beyond Google cardboard, this is my first VR experience. While I was initially impressed by the 3DoF(3 degrees of freedom) of early mobile VR (cardboard), I quickly lost interest as your movement is not replicated in 3D space. I have followed PCVR space for years but I did not want to invest in the hardware nor did I have the free space to dedicate to the typical PCVR setup (PC, external tracking cameras, etc). When I learned of the Quest I was intrigued but unsure how well a dated Snapdragon 835 could perform compared to a full blown gaming PC.
First off let me just go ahead and lay out all the negatives with the device. No offense Mark, but I wish the device wasn’t tied to Facebook. You should have complete faith in a company who wants you to wear cameras and a microphone in order to operate a device, fortunately I trust John Carmack and the team at Oculus. Truth of the matter is this device may not have come to market this soon if it weren’t for Facebook’s backing and their foresight. Thankfully you do not have to use your Facebook account, it is optional. Privacy concerns aside, the sweet spot (focal area) is small, particularly vertically. Adjusting the headset to get a clear image initially takes a few tries but overtime I found it easier to dial in. Oculus also has fitment guides within the headset that assist you the first time you put the Quest on but you can also run anytime you need. The Quest features a manual IPD adjustment, which is needed to get an optimal image and reduce fatigue. The device is a little front heavy and the straps are fairly rigid, combining for an uncomfortable wear at times. Often I can just reposition the Quest to get an acceptable level of comfort, but I wish the straps had padding to help with the pressure on the back of the head which is necessary to offset the weight of the front. It isn’t the end of the world and you don’t need to strap a counter-weight to the back of it, despite what the internet tells you. The included facial interface (foam piece that cushions your face) is very comfortable and the glasses spacer does not seem to reduce FOV (field of view) significantly. The Quest has speakers built in to the straps, which provides surprisingly rich audio. Oculus also offers independent left-right ear buds, but the Quest supports standard headphones if you prefer.
One of the primary components that makes the Quest unique is the Insight tracking system, meaning the tracking cameras are mounted on the headset tracking not only the environment but also the touch controllers. Oculus even lets you look through these wide-angle cameras in a passthrough mode that is utilized to setup your “Guardian” space. I was probably most impressed with the creation and management of these spaces by the Quest, as without them mainstream VR would be a non-starter. Within 10-seconds of putting the Quest on I can draw a new Guardian boundary and safely use the device in a new space without worrying about running into a wall. In my experience, the Guardian works flawlessly and has saved me from swinging a controller into my TV. I found the key is to draw the boundary a few inches away or before the wall/object you are trying to avoid, ensuring the Guardian pops up before your head intersects the plane of a stationary wall. That seems obvious but hopefully someone reading this will take the necessary precautions! With the latest update, you can even adjust the sensitivity to further customize the behavior of the Guardian system which is nice. Initially I had a few tracking issues with the system, which was to be expected considering what Oculus was trying to accomplish with 4 cameras and a mobile processor. The team at Oculus tackled the issue through machine learning and now the tracking has been solid for me. The controllers even seem to be tracked accurately outside of the view of the cameras (using the IMUs and telemetry gathered since release), which is nothing short of amazing. Not to mention this overclocked mobile processor also somehow manages to run decent looking games at a consistent frame rate!
Speaking of games, the Quest has a nice launch library to choose from. The only caveat here is a majority of the games are essentially ports. For me, I am blown away that they are able to port and run PC VR games at all but I can understand why veteran Rift owners may be disappointed with the selection. This speaks to an issue with VR in general not just the Quest. In addition, not all games are cross-buy despite being on both Rift & Quest. I understand the reasoning behind this as some games are not straight ports, but rather optimized for the Quest and wire-free 6DoF. Regardless, it is nice to have the flexibility to play a game on the Rift or Quest for owners of both. If you are new to VR, this is a non-issue and there is a nice selection of VR experiences to choose from. Currently the graphics are fair but will improve once developers learn to work within the Quest's limitations. A device like the Quest is just what the VR community needs to foster broader adoption which will lead to better quality and selection of games. Storage wise there is plenty of room, with many experiences under 1GB and larger games averaging 2-3GB.
Since getting the Quest, my PS4 is collecting dust..it really is a transformative experience that is unlike any console gaming system before it. At the price point, the Oculus Quest can’t be beat. Carmack’s vision of mobile VR has become a reality, the future is now!

Great value with plenty of features

The 322GW dash cam is a fantastic value for what it offers, I recommend this for anyone looking to spend $200 or less on a dash cam. With a wide 140 degree viewing angle and smooth 1080p 60FPS recording, the 322 has what you need to get the job done but with a nice set of features and room for expansion. The dash cam includes a “Click&Go Pro” GPS magnetic mount, 12/24V socket power cable, usb cable, suction mount, and a cable tool tp help hide the wire in your vehicle’s crevices. The camera was very easy to install. I opted for the suction mount, which is strong and easy to use, allowing you to easily move the cam between vehicles if desired. Unlike some suction mounts that seem to weaken overtime, this one has so far been rock solid.
Nextbase offers their own 16 and 32GB SD cards but the cam supports up to 128GB. At 1080p 60fps, the dash cam generates videos at the rate of roughly 150MB/minute. Obviously a smaller SD card won’t hold weeks of footage, but fortunately Nextbase makes it easy to lock videos by pressing a button on the unit preventing them from being auto-deleted as it makes room for newer recordings. The cam will also automatically lock a video if the G sensor determines an accident has occurred. In the unfortunate event of an accident, the cam can even initiate an SOS alert to notify emergency services using your phone if it determines you are unresponsive, a potential life saver. The 322GW also features a parking mode that uses the G sensor to start recording if the vehicle is jostled while parked which is a nice bonus. Admittedly, the feature is limited with the front facing cam but the 322GW also features an expansion port where you can add a rear view camera to monitor the cabin and surroundings or just rear view if you prefer. Other notable features include a speedometer screen saver and a time lapse mode to name a few.
Most importantly the recordings are clear and even feature useful telemetry data available from within the app. The only negative I found is the app (iOS) seems slow and buggy at times. When transferring videos the app will sometimes hang and the transfer rate never exceeded 3MB/sec, making transferring multiple videos tedious and time consuming. Hopefully this can be resolved with an update to the app as it detracts from what is otherwise a solid dash cam. Again, for the price the Nextbase 322GW is a great value and being able to download videos to your phone without having to pull the SD card makes this the best dash cam I have owned.

Goodbye cartridges!

The Epson EcoTank ET-2760 is a nice all in one printer that provides the basic functionality (copy, print, & scan) most people are looking for in a printer, but at a better value compared to most cartridge based printers. The main draw to Epson’s EcoTank line of printers is the “cartridge free” feature that not only offers convenience but potentially cost savings over the typical ink cartridge systems we are all too familiar with. Instead of wasteful, expensive cartridges that only last a few hundred pages; Epson designed a unique tank system that is easy to fill and reasonably priced. Each bottle offers up to 7,500 pages for black and 6,000 pages for color far exceeding typical ink cartridges. On top of the great yield of refills, Epson includes a set of ink bottles with the ET-2760 to completely fill the printer with enough ink for 2 years! Time will tell if I print that many pages in 2 years but it is nice knowing I won’t be hunting down refills anytime soon.
The design is basic but clean in an all white finish. The ET-2760 ink wells are visible in the front, providing an ink level indicator. Navigation is performed with an adjustable control panel and is easy to use. Basic printing and copying works as expected. In addition to printing from mobile devices there is an SD card slot in the front for printing photos direct from a memory card. Epson even has a few builtin forms (lined paper, graph paper, music sheets, etc) are convenient but likely only useful for randomly needing a single form or two. A few things I wish were improved at the price point are forgivable at the cost per page this printer offers. I would have liked a larger display; the 1.44” LCD is manageable but older users may be put off by the small print. This model does not have a paper cassette, instead only offering a rear paper feed. Depending on your placement, you may want to consider the premium EcoTank models that offer a cassette feed. Scanning to you computer is limited to USB/WDS but with out a document feeder you likely wouldn’t be scanning that many documents anyway.
The printer does what I need flawlessly, being able to periodically AirPrint a photo or document without worrying about the printer having enough ink is a winner. If you are looking for a no frills printer that won’t burn your wallet with ink refills, the Epson ET-2760 is a great value and highly recommended.

Upgrade your phonograph

When reviewing the Sony PS-LX310BT, I approached it like any self respecting audiophile would; using a digitally remastered vinyl, on a turntable with speakers connected via Bluetooth. I know the purists would scoff at the idea of a product such as this but I get it. Despite being torn on the subject personally, I know I find myself on board and appreciate the convenience. Most people today have already purchased and own numerous Bluetooth speakers, so it makes sense to drag this analog medium into the future.
Not only is it convenient, it sounds great too. I tested with both a name brand soundbar and handful of portable bluetooth speakers, all sounding great. The warmth and richness (distortion and limited range) are replicated even when compressed over Bluetooth. All jokes aside, having a turntable with Bluetooth doesn’t detract from the vinyl experience, if anything it adds to it by giving you more flexibility. With that debate out of the way, Sony did a fair job with this one. The design is clean and operation is flawless. The turntable is fully automated, a welcome for newcomers such as myself but can also be operated manually if desired. The turntable will play at 33/45 rotation and accommodate both 7 and 12” records, which covers a majority of the market. The turntable is quiet; except for the noisy automated action of docking and undocking the tone arm but that’s hardly a deal breaker at this price point. Pairing speakers was simple and the turntable can store up to 10 devices. It seems to automatically attempt to join the first available one but it would be nice if it had an option (action) allowing the user to cycle through the paired devices. My only complaint is the turntable is mostly plastic, but seems solid.
Overall I am pleased with the PS-LX310BT. I think it great for someone just looking to try out vinyl without growing their hair out, wearing sandals, and committing an entire bedroom to storing milk crates of vinyl.

Lightning strikes twice

The Belkin Duratek Plus is a high quality Lightning cable that should last for years. The cable features a thick woven exterior and aramid fibers inside to create a strong, resilient cable. Though I am not a fan of the speckled appearance, the large molded strain relied is an improvement over the Apple cable. Belkin claims the connector is also laser welded, but time will tell if it breaks off as some cheaper cables I have owned. Fortunately, Belkin offers a generous 5-year warranty for added peace of mind. The length is perfect for me. At 4-feet, the cable is just slightly longer than the Lightning cable included with most iPhones (see photo) and includes a strap for bundling the cable together. Overall, a well designed and worthy replacement of the ever failing Lightning cable.

Microwaving has evolved! When it comes to everything you expect in a microwave, nothing compares with the defrosting, cooking, and reheating capability of the new Cyclonic Wave. At every temperature level, Cyclonic Wave circulates heat in precision, ultra-efficient 3D waves for easier, more versatile food preparation, even with denser, more complex food textures. This exceptional microwave also includes patented Inverter Technology. Unlike traditional microwaves that rely on pulse-on, pulse-off power at lower temperatures, Inverter Technology delivers a constant stream of cooking power at every temperature. The result? More evenly cooked meals — edges to centers — every time. Put together, Cyclonic Wave with Inverter Technology provides the fastest, most efficient way to enjoy perfectly prepared snacks, sides, and meals across a broader range of cooking techniques, while also maintaining more of the natural nutrients and flavor you want. It's the ultimate combination by Panasonic!

The Genius Prestige Plus is a modern take on the traditional microwave, featuring cyclonic wave and sensor cooking technology. The exterior and glass touch sensitive buttons give the microwave a refined appearance. The script font of “Genius Prestige Plus” isn’t my taste but others may like it. The microwave was larger than I anticipated, measuring 12” H X 22” W X 19.5” D. Inside the interior seems spacious for the 1.6 cubic foot size and features LED lighting. The control panel is a radical approach to how you interact with the microwave. Instead of directly entering your cook time, the microwave is geared more towards cooking functions. Initially I was put off by the approach, but overtime I became use to this method and don’t have any trouble quickly using the proper function. Fortunately the microwave also lets you cook in 30 second increments easily or has a swipe function to dial in cook times. Once you get use to the layout you can operate it as fast as a traditional number pad.
Though I find using the functions useful, the genius function (smart cook/reheat) doesn’t work well when using a cover as the microwave can’t detect the temperature/humidity as accurately, causing the food to be overheated for my preference. This issue is specific to covered food that you don’t want to splatter, which I tend to cover everything out of habit. Using a paper towel instead or perhaps a better ventilated cover might work better. When using a paper towel or cooking uncovered, the smart reheat does a fantastic job at heating the food to the proper temperature taking out all the guess work. The cyclonic wave also seems to heat more evenly than a traditional microwave as well.
If you have the space for it, the Panasonic GPP is definitely one to consider and despite my issue with the sensor reheat I feel it it the best microwave I have owned.

These Cobra MicroTalk 2-way radios work great assuming you have reasonable expectations up front. First and most importantly the 23-mile range is theoretical, actual range in my urban environment was approximately 1/2 mile. Depending on what you intended to use these for 1/2 mile may be more than adequate, otherwise you will want to look elsewhere. These radios are perfect for around the house/office or even a venue. I like their ease of use and no non-sense look that can be used in a professional setting. Their small size make these easy to pocket or clip on and they even feature a hands-free mode which is great when you don’t have a free hand to respond. I found the battery life to be good, still having a charge after a few days of sporadic usage. The kit includes a charging cradle but they can also be charged using micro USB. I recommend these for anyone looking for a nice set of radios that don’t look cheap and work great.

Perfect for Smoothies

Posted by: PeboQuattro

I got the Ninja FreshVac Kitchen System to replace an older Ninja “Kitchen System” and for the most part I feel the newer model performs better. After unboxing I immediately noticed the smaller footprint of the 1400-Watt motor base. The drive system is smaller but the same design as the older unit, which has performed well over the years despite being made of plastic. Ninja also reduced costs by eliminated the suction release mechanism from the base in favor of smaller traditional suction feet. All of these cost saving measures make me question long term durability, though time will tell. The new base is all black with a nice selective touchscreen based on the vessel attached to the base. It works well and makes the blender simpler to use, which is nice.
Beyond the variety of vessels including with blender (72oz pitcher, 40oz Processor, 20oz cup) Ninja is offering a unique vacuum feature under the guise of not just better texture but also locking in nutrients. The FreshVac system does create a smoother texture, without all of the unwanted foam. I found my usual spinach smoothie with almond milk to be easier to drink but slightly thin. After 2 weeks of daily use the batteries in the FreshVac pump had already died. “Fortunately” Ninja sells a cord that probably should have come with it in the first place. Beyond the FreshVac pitcher and blender cup, the Kitchen System includes a Precision Processor with a reversible slicing/shredding disc, chopping blades, and dough blade. At 40oz, I don’t expect it to hold much dough but I haven’t tried. I have used the slicing disc and chopping blades, both performed reasonably well. I wish it came with an additional disc blade that had a larger opening for thicker slicing but it gets the job done.
After a month of daily use, the FreshVac cup blade assembly feels a little stiff and makes a squeaking noise when coming to a stop after blending. Despite this, I am still happy with the new Ninja as it still performs better than my previous Kitchen System. Overall, the Ninja FreshVac System is perfect for those looking for a multipurpose blender with a nice assortment of attachments but also looking to make fresh smoothies and extracts.

Hello! Is it me you're looking for?

The Samsung SmartThings Tracker is perfect for someone who needs the ability to keep track of someone or determine the general location of something with the expectation of periodically having access to charge the device. The primary purpose I am using it for is geofencing/location services with my SmartThings without having to rely on a phone. You could also attach it to your child’s backpack to provide rudimentary location or even trigger alerts based on when they leave or arrive at a certain location. One suggested use by Samsung is pet tracking, but I found the device not well suited for this unless you have a medium to large size dog who won’t mind the tracker hanging from their collar. Measuring 1.7” x 1.7" x 0.5" and weighing .9 ounces, it is relatively portable but may be too large and heavy for smaller dogs or cats. The tracker features a simple lanyard and isn’t really designed to be attached to an animal collar without hanging down. The tracker is well suited to be attached to or inside a bag and most would find it non obtrusive. The tracker itself is IP68 rated and seems well made with only a simple button to check status or update it’s location.
What sets the Samsung SmartThings tracker apart from other “trackers” is it’s on-board LTE radio, providing location services without requiring the device to be in bluetooth range. Samsung includes 1 year of service without requiring a credit card to activate, which is nice. After 1 year you can continue service at a reasonable $5/month. The tracker has fair battery life, but again depending on use. I was able to burn through the battery in as little as 2 days after setting the device to update it’s location in 10-minute intervals. Obviously a tracking device is pointless if it’s dead, fortunately Samsung allows you to increase intervals to a more modest frequency such as hourly or even as little as every 5 hours. Adding to this a power saving mode where by you can specify times of expected dormancy and pause updates during this time. Using hourly updates with power saving on during the evening I was able to achieve over a week of battery life. I am sure this could be stretched further with less frequent updates and more aggressive power saving setting. My only issue with the tracker is software related. Sometimes the app takes a few minutes to catch up with historical data, initially making you think the tracker is dead or not functioning. Hopefully Samsung will work on processing this data before you request it to improve the perceived performance. Otherwise the app works fine, providing tracker history, instant location update, and even live location tracking (live tracking will drain the battery significantly). I think the Samsung tracker is a unique device that is relatively cost effective for what it does. I recommend this tracker over a bluetooth based one if you know there is a possibility of needing to locate an item that may not be in bluetooth range of a “tracker network”.

You don't want to just hear the bass - you want to feel the thunder. The Bose Bass Module 700 delivers rich, resounding bass in a compact wireless subwoofer so you can feel the full impact in every thrilling moment of your music, movies, and TV. With its premium glass-top finish, the Bose Bass Module 700 offers elegance you won't find in typical subwoofers or home theater equipment. But the real beauty lies beneath the exterior. This wireless subwoofer delivers a dynamic range of resounding low notes from a powerful driver and generously sized port. You can feel the crushing footsteps of a T-rex on the screen, or a heart-pumping, beat-stomping chorus in your favorite song. Don't be afraid to turn up the volume, either; QuietPort technology virtually eliminates distortion without sacrificing clarity. Want to kick up the performance a little bit more? Add the Bose Surround Speakers to your Bose soundbar and bass module for full-on surround sound.

If you are reading this, trying to decide if the sub is worth it; the answer is yes. Simply put it delivers where it should, providing deep wall shaking bass. The setup was easy. After unboxing the surprisingly heavy sub, it paired to the soundbar via the app in a matter of seconds. The glass top matches the aesthetics of the soundbar, which means it attracts fingerprints and dust. Besides a refined glass top, the enclosure is made of plastic and metal with rubber feet that prevent the large black cube from vibrating across your floors. The dimensions are 12.9 “ H X 11.6” W X 11.6” D, which is a little large but Bose offers a smaller sub for those who wish to sacrifice performance for space. Speaking of performance, the 700 delivers. Response is fantastic and the bass is punchy yet deep and distortion free. My only gripe is I wish Bose offered bass control independent of the soundbar. Sometimes I found myself wanting the bass to be fuller on the soundbar but turning it up too far caused the subwoofer to be overactive for some content. Most people won’t need this level of control and will find the preset EQ to be satisfactory. If you own the Soundbar 700, this is a must buy.
