Instant gratification at a price

The Polaroid Now is the latest iteration of a timeless classic, that offers a unique experience missing from our digital lives.
My wife and I were excited to try this camera out as we had recently received her baby book from her mother filled with a ton of polaroids and were excited to do the same for our 3 month old baby daughter.
The plastic body feels well built and the film is easy to load. The nostalgia is spot on, but to be honest, the quality was far worse than we expected. It literally replicated the 80’s polaroids we were trying to recreate. We had envisioned slightly better quality photos, but still knew they would pale in comparison to digital photos, of course. Naturally some of the appeal of analog photography is in the challenge of capturing the perfect shot, but at cost of nearly $2 per push of the shutter button, the Polaroid Now can be an expensive experience.
The simplicity of use, instant gratification of holding the photo in your hand (after it develops) and nostalgia is alluring, but these photos would be more for fun.
So at your next gathering, whip it out, have a little fun, just don’t try to capture the details.

Classic looks and sound
on April 6, 2020

The Marshall Uxbridge is nice for someone who is looking for a WiFi enabled speaker that supports Airplay 2 and Alexa with a classic guitar amp vibe. With its traditional Marshall tweed grill and topped with gold control frets, the Uxbridge is classic yet unique compared to other WiFi enabled speakers. The Uxbridge lacks the leather wrapped exterior and control knobs of its pricier siblings but brings an affordable option to their line. The front features lights that provide feedback on volume, bass, and treble adjustments as well as an indication of Alexa activity. This particular model supports Alexa, Spotify Connect, and Airplay 2, in addition to Bluetooth 4.2, providing a nice assortment of modern connectivity. Alexa responded well as long as the volume wasn’t too high and Airplay 2 worked great out of the box. Though I was disappointed to see the shared light array in front light red when the microphone is muted (there is also a light on top that illuminates red), I can see where it may be beneficial for someone using it on a bookshelf where the top may not be as visible. An option to modify the behavior in the app would be nice.
Though the sound is fair for its size, the mid range drops off when listening off-axis while bass is nonexistent. At this price point, you are paying a little more for looks then you are performance unfortunately. Where it lacks in fidelity, it makes up for in distortion free volume. For such a small speaker, the Uxbridge is unapologetically loud. If you are looking to crank it to 11 or just want a nice looking speaker, the Uxbridge delivers.

Bigger is better

The Dyson V11 outsize is a beast. Unboxing the outsize I was surprised by the size of this monster compared to my trusty V10 animal. Though I don’t have a Dyson V11 to compare, the 150% larger bin makes this vacuum physically larger than a V10. I immediately noticed the weight of the vacuum without any attachments. Without weighing it I would estimate it to be 2 pounds heavier than a Dyson V10, which is considerable when most of the weight of Dyson cordless vacuums are near the handle compared to traditional uprights that keep the weight lower to the ground. Fortunately, when using the vacuum I never found it to be unwieldy and it transfers most of that to the cleaner head. The outsize also includes a new High Torque XL cleaner head that is over 2.5” wider, creating a larger cleaning path but also managing to squeeze in between my dinning room chairs and any other tight spots I could think of. The High Torque XL includes a Dyson DLS (Dynamic Load Sensor) which provides instant feedback on load allowing the V11 to adjust to changing floor types automatically. The interactive display even shows you the current cleaning mode (Eco, Auto/Med, Boost) and expected run time in real-time. It even adapts the battery icons to estimate charge level and informs you if Auto mode is available when a torque head is connected. I found the Auto mode to perform flawlessly, automatically transitioning between floor types. I was able to get 40 minutes out of a single battery, cleaning a 1700 sqft home consisting of tile, hardwood, rugs, and 3 carpeted bedrooms. The amount of dirt and hair it pulled was comparable to a full size corded upright! If that weren’t enough cleaning, the outsize features click-in interchangeable batteries doubling the run time. For me, this is by far the best feature of the vacuum. Dyson even provides a second charger to allow simultaneous charging of both included batteries. One nitpick is the chargers do seem dated and less refined relative to the overall product design (having to plug in the battery over having it integrated into the provided dock or wireless charging or even a magnetic cable). Owning a cat that comes inside periodically, I am glad to have a larger vacuum that can handle the cat hair that always seems to fill my V10 bin. The bin is physically longer and wider, which can make it awkward getting it into tight spaces when using the crevice tool. For me personally, I wish there was a model in between the V11 and V11 outsize but I imagine that would be a small market. Regardless, the V11 outsize is a beast but that isn’t bad because it can replace you upright and your cordless with a single device.

CrossWave cleaning with cordless freedom!
on January 6, 2020

The Bissell CrossWave Cordless Max is a versatile wet/dry vac that can clean tile, hardwood, laminate, and even area rugs! This CrossWave Cordless Max is a great upgrade from my older wired CrossWave, offering a cord-free experience while still providing the same level of cleaning. The two-tank system is the same, which works well and is far better than a dirty mop bucket. Though the CrossWave Max could be a little lighter, it is easy to use and maneuver. The cordless design allows easy floor cleaning without worrying about locating a nearby outlet. The battery life unfortunately is rather poor and only last 30 minutes, but this is enough to fill the waste tank fully and equates to approximately 1-2 rooms depending on the area. I would have liked to see battery life approximately doubled so I could complete my hard floor cleaning without having to wait for it to recharge. Another shortfall is the long charge cycle, which can take over 2 hours depending on how depleted the battery is. Despite the poor battery life, I much prefer using this over my older cording model due to the convenience. The CrossWave Max also features a cleaning cycle which is a great addition, making it far easier to clean and you spend less time cleaning the vac after each use. While the CrossWave Max isn’t going to work miracles on your old stained grout, it will clean and maintain your floors far better than a mop while being adaptable to your various floor surfaces.

Grande taste, Small footprint
on December 8, 2019

The Nespresso De'Longhi Gran Lattissima is an automatic espresso machine with integrated milk frother, capable of producing coffee drinks that rival Starbucks with the ease of a single cup brewer. The attractive design features a small (18.8 D x 7.99 W x 10.87 H) footprint, rear water reservoir, detachable milk carafe, and a glass capacitive touch panel for easy operation. After unboxing and testing water quality, the Gran Lattissima is ready to produce quality espresso based drink in less than 25 seconds. Like all Nespresso machines, the Gran Lattissima uses capsules to produce high quality coffee extraction. Though the Nespresso capsules are slightly more per serving ($0.70) compared to some K-Cups, the quality is unmatched apart from much larger, noisier, and pricier espresso machines. I like the drop through design of the machine, meaning your capsules drop into an internal waste bin after use for a clean operation and easy waste removal. The bin holds approximately 10 capsules, allowing me to operate the machine all week without worrying about disposing or recycling (recyclable aluminum) used capsules. The rear mounted water reservoir however, barely makes it a week of pouring daily flat whites and running a purge shot with milk cleaning after each use. I would like to have seen just 8-10 oz more to accommodate daily drinks and cleaning without worrying about capacity, as well as a side mounted reservoir. The detachable milk carafe allows you to easily store it in the fridge, making it a breeze to connect when you are making a milk based drink. The carafe is also easy to clean by simply turning the knob and the Gran Lattissima rinses the milk system for you. For deep cleaning or storage, it easily disassembles with a turn the other direction. During operation, the Gran Lattissima is slightly louder than my retired Keurig but the quality of coffee it produces is no comparison. Thanks to the 19-bar pump and automatic operation, the machine makes the best coffee I have had from any home coffee machine, producing nice crema and smooth flavor. It really is surprising what this little machine can accomplish at the push of a button. If you are looking for a high quality coffee machine that can produce a large assortment of beverages (Lungo, Espresso, Ristretto, Macchiato, Latte, Flat White, Cappuccino, Hot Milk and Foam) that rivals your local coffee shop yet still fits under your counter, the Gran Lattissima is hard to beat!

As a laptop, this thing rocks!

The Dell Inspiron 15.6” 7000 2-in-1 is a great laptop featuring a sharp 4K display, a fast 512GB SSD with 32GB Optane memory, 16GB RAM, the latest 10th generation i7-10510U processor, and an MX250 GPU with dedicated 2GB of GDDR5. Everything you would want Dell has added to this powerhouse making it the perfect all around laptop for practically everyone (apart from serious PC gamers). On the outside there is a satin metallic black finish that gives it a clean look but attracts fingerprints. The left side has a traditional power port to charge the device with the included brick, a full size HDMI port, Thunderbolt 3/USB C, and micro SD slot. The right is flanked by two USB 3.1 ports and combination microphone/headphone jack.
Opening the device reveals a colorful 4K display, a nested stylus stored magnetically in the hinge and a full size keyboard with a 10-key numeric pad. A few gripes here is the trackpad isn’t the best, my trackpad has some play/movement when pushed down before it clicks. On what otherwise is a solid device, the trackpad falls short. The small amount of play aside, tracking is good and scrolling is smooth. The keyboard makes up for my issue with the trackpad by offering fantastic typing feel. The keys have decent travel and offer great feedback without being noisy. The power button inside is also a fingerprint reader, which works well and is a convenient way to switch users. The stylus is battery operated and is a nice addition but I will primarily use this as a laptop as this is a less than ideal tablet. The display, while rich and colorful, has noticeable light bleed in the top corners of the screen. It is most apparent when waking the device as it briefly shows a black background, revealing a flaw that is otherwise obfuscated by colorful backgrounds and content. One of the key features of this device is the ability to fold the display all the way back, allowing it to be held and used like a tablet. Unfortunately the weight of the device and active cooling make this a poor tablet experience. Don’t get me wrong, it is a cool feature and some people may find it manageable but for most you will have a far better tablet experience with a different form factor. The fans are mostly silent except for when you try to run a graphically demanding game, which is to be expected. Don’t expect a gaming machine but you can play less graphically demanding games with the settings turned all the way down. For instance, I was able to navigate No Man’s Sky with everything turned off but it easily became overwhelmed during action sequences. Again this isn’t what this laptop is for but it gives you an idea of the performance it is capable of.
Back to it’s strong points, I couldn’t be happier with this as a laptop. Of the 460GB storage partition, mine had 400GB available after running updates. The SSD recorded a blistering 2300 MB/s read and 1100MB/s write, likely due to the Intel Optane memory. Geekbench recorded 1266 single core and 4380 multicore on battery, which isn’t bad for a laptop. Arbitrary numbers aside, the laptop feels fast and I have been pleased with the performance. Battery life is pretty good as well. It can hold a charge for 4 or 5 days and still manage to get 5+ hours of battery life with mixed usage. Overall, it really is a great device. Dell has managed to provide something for everyone in a nicely packaged 2-in-1.

Under Pressure
on October 27, 2019
Posted by: PeboQuattro

The Withings BPM connect is a nice, portable blood pressure monitor that has connected features making it easy to record and track your blood pressure / heart rate. Setup was simple and easy, interfacing with your phone over bluetooth initially but utilizes wifi to upload data to the Withings Health Mate app. The device has a clean modern design with a discrete LED display and single button operation. One click to turn on, another to start a measurement, and finally one last click to assign the measurement to a user. Tracking is simple as well thanks to the Health Mate app which can also sync the data to Apple health if you are an iOS user. The device provides color coded feedback indicated if the measurement is normal, elevated, or high blood pressure. The Health Mate app can provide further details about the classification and easy to view trend data. The BPM connect features an internal battery that charges via micro USB, though it would have been nice if it were USB C it can provide up to 6 months of usage on a single charge. I have used the Connect for about a dozen readings over the past two weeks and the app still reports a full charge, so the 6 months claim is definetly plausible. My only negative comment about the device is my wife claims it caused her discomfort, seeming to get tighter than she expected. Though I do feel it gets tight compared to a wrist BPM, I have not experiencing any discomfort and I use the Connect daily. I recommend the BPM connect for anyone who is concerned with their health and wish to have an accurate, convenient method of tracking their blood pressure.

Zoom, Enhance
on October 5, 2019
Posted by: PeboQuattro
from Beaumont, TX
The Arlo Pro 3 is the latest camera from Arlo, and a great addition to my current setup of Arlo Pro cameras. In the box you will find 2 Arlo Pro 3 cameras with batteries, 1 SmartHub basestation, 1 charging cable, 1 magnetic mount, and 1 threaded mount. I found it peculiar that Arlo didn’t provide two magnetic mounts as they showcase the design of the camera and are easier to use than the threaded mount.
Setup was a breeze. Arlo has refined the process over these years and I had the Pro 3 up and running in under 5 minutes. Migrating my Pro 2 cameras over to the new SmartHub was equally as easy but not required to use the new Pro 3 system.
Borrowing design from their higher end Ultra 4K cameras, the Pro 3 is an upgrade from the Pro 2 in both hardware and features. The Pro 3 now shares the sleek unibody design with the Ultra, along with the improved magnetic charging. Offering up to 2K HDR footage and a wide 160 degree viewing angle, the Pro 3 provides a clearer picture and better coverage when compared to my older Pro 2 cameras. Also new to the Pro 3 is the addition of a spotlight which allows the camera to record color night video, a welcome upgrade from the black and white nighttime video of the Pro 2. The spotlight can evenly be manually activated from the app if you desire. The Pro 3 has improved audio, allowing 2-way conversations from the app to the camera. One cool feature I like about the new Pro 3 is the auto zoom and track. When enabled, Arlo uses their computer vision algorithm to not only detect the object but zoom in, enhance, and track the object! Unfortunately it crops the footage to 1080p while uses this feature but it is disabled by default. A lot of the enhanced features are handled in the “cloud” and require an Arlo Smart subscription, which is reasonably priced and the cameras include a 3-month trial. Some of the limitations inherent to the Arlo system are still present in Arlo Pro 3, namely the slight delay in the time it takes for the camera to record once it detects motion; though I do feel it has improved on the latest Pro 3.
The Arlo Pro 3 is a great iteration of their “Pro” camera line and reasonably priced for the feature set Arlo provides. I can easily recommend the Pro 3 to not only existing Arlo Pro users but to anyone who is in the market for a well designed wire-free camera.

GO 2 has got your back!
on October 5, 2019
Posted by: PeboQuattro
from Beaumont, TX
The Upright GO 2 is a posture trainer which claims to improve alignment, strength back muscles and develop your core...quite a lot for what is essentially a battery powered accelerometer.
The GO 2 is small and fairly discrete at 1” wide and 1.75” long. The device affixes to your skin with replaceable adhesive strips which last up to a week in my experience. The adhesive does lose its grip fairly easily once you perspire so probably best to take the device off before a workout. After placing the device at a comfortable point on your back, you set your upright posture. Upright has helpful videos to guide you through placement of the device and how to find your upright posture. You can set you posture either through the app or by double clicking the button on the device itself. After this the device vibrates to let you know when you are slouching or bending beyond a certain point based on the training mode you set between stationary, standard, and active. The different modes adjust the sensitivity and length of time before the GO 2 alerts you of incorrect posture. Preset modes are nice and convenient but the app also allows you to further customize the modes to make the device work best for you. It would be nice if the device could automatically switch between the training modes based on accelerometer activity but the app makes it easy enough to change modes. When your phone isn’t nearby the GO 2 has a few functions that can be performed with the button on the device such as power, set posture, and switching between training and tracking. The GO 2 also comes with a magnetic carrying case that has an opening to charge the device while in the case. The battery life is excellent, I can go several days without needing to recharge the device.
After customizing the vibration, delay, and range I found the device helpful without being annoying. The app provides stats on your posture, revealing I slouch much more than I realized! After using the device for a week I find myself correcting my posture even when I am not wearing the GO 2, making this an easy recommendation to all of those hunched over a screen reading this!

Fast and convenient without the noise
on September 11, 2019
Posted by: PeboQuattro
from Beaumont, TX
The Ninja Foodi Air Fry Oven is a great multipurpose device that can air fry, roast, broil, bake, dehydrate and even toast! It includes a removable crumb tray, a wire wrack, a sheet pan, and an air fry basket. All of the items store inside the unit as to not take up additional space.
My previous air fryer was a smaller, vertical design by Ninja that I found to be very noisy and inconvenient due to the small cooking area. The Foodi features a large interior accommodating a variety of foods. The 13”x13” interior provides ample space to spread out food allowing the Foodi to cooking more evenly than my previous air fryer. The internal clearance from the sheet pan to the top heating element is 3” giving you enough room for a majority of foods and proteins, just don’t plan on cramming in a Thanksgiving Turkey. The Foodi has a nice interface featuring a dial to select cooking modes or to adjust time and temperature after selecting either with the buttons. It is a breeze to operate and even features an internal light like you would find on larger, conventional ovens. I have used the roasting, air fry, bake, and toast modes so far with great success. I find it is more convenient to use over my larger oven due to it’s incredibly fast warm up and cook times.
My favorite aspect of the Foodi is how quiet it is. The fan on other air fryers can sound like a jet engine, fortunately Ninja designed the Foodi with quiet fans that circulate the air without generating excessive noise. It remains to be seen if the fans will become louder overtime but it is night and day compared to other air fryers I have used. One feature that was a bit of a miss for me was the the flip up vertical storage position. I am pleased that Ninja incorporates vertical storage of the device as without it I wouldn’t have room in my cabinets. Ninja advertises flipping it up under the cabinets for countertop storage but in my case my cabinets are too low, and dial protrudes out too far and it won’t quite clear at 15” height. It is not a big deal for myself as I did not intend to store it on the countertop but it is worth mentioning for those who would and have low hanging cabinets.
The Foodi Air Fryer Oven is the best air fryer I have used and is perfect for someone who is looking for a quiet countertop convection oven with an assortment of features and convenient vertical storage.
