The all new XPS 13 featuring 11th Gen InteI Core mobile processors, it’s now possible to enjoy incredibly immersive entertainment on a remarkably thin and light laptop. The stunning 4-sided InfinityEdge display enables us to bring a 6.8% larger 16:10 display to the 13-inch, all in a 2% smaller size than before, delivering a 91.5% screen to body ratio. 100% of the enclosure is sculpted by a CNC (computer numerical control) machining process. A high precision, machine-milled aluminum chassis creates an elegant design with high build quality that’s stronger and stiffer than magnesium or plastic.

Remarkable Design, Unremarkable Processor

The Dell XPS 13 9310 is a fantastic laptop that is hard to not recommend, featuring a stunning display, thin design, and relatively good performance.
Upon unboxing, I was immediately impressed with the look and feel of the XPS 13. This model features a refined carbon weave Arctic White interior, an i7-1185G7, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD. At only 2.6 lbs, the XPS can easily be carried around without feeling bulky. The tapered, wedge design makes it feel even slimmer than it is. With 2 Thunderbolt 4/USB C ports, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a micro SD card slot the ports available are limited but Dell also includes a USB A adapter. At least Dell had the foresight to put one USB C port on either side for charging and peripherals.
The small foot print of the XPS is matched with a stunning InfintyEdge display featuring Gorilla Glass 6. The 4K display has the slimmest bezels I have seen in a laptop, yet they still managed to keep the Windows Hello webcam at the top of the display without using any quirky pop-up modules. The colors are rich and vibrant, especially when enabling HDR. My M1 MacBook Pro's display looks dated by comparison. I did however experience intermittent flicker with HDR enabled at various brightness levels. Since the problem for me was limited to HDR, I am sure it is software related and hopefully will be resolved in the future. My model is also touch enabled, though I honestly never use it. The keyboard and trackpad are both good, but not great. While I enjoyed typing this review on the XPS, a slight dish to the keys would improve feel for me personally. Otherwise the keyboard is very tactile with good travel and feel. The power button doubles as a fingerprint reader and it performed flawlessly for me. The trackpad, while responsive, feels very stiff when clicking which I prefer over tapping.
The 11th gen i7 chipset with Iris Xe graphics performed well with most basic tasks. Web surfing, editing documents, and watching videos where all easily handled by the i7. Knowing this isn't a gaming laptop, I tested No Man's Sky on low settings to see how the new Iris Xe Graphics would fair. Surprisingly, it was mostly playable despite the fan noise and random graphical tearing. Under basic use it does get warmer then my MacBook M1 but that is to be expected. Any compute or graphics intensive task however, would be unbearable in your lap as the thermal design transfers considerable heat underneath laptop. Also underneath are downward firing speakers that sound decent as long as they are not muffled by your lap.
Battery life is fair for an Intel mobile chip. I managed to get over a week of standby time with very light usage every day. Average battery life is 6-8 hours depending on use. When testing the limits of the CPU/GPU I was able to drain the entire battery in as little as 2 hours but that would not be typical of this device. I am honestly a little disappointed that Dell doesn't offer this model with an AMD Ryzen, as that would be much better suited for the design and make it a real contender for those choosing between Apple's new silicon devices and a PC. Though comparing architecture may not be fair, it should be considered as many users predominantly use web based applications and are not married to a particular platform.
The cost of the device indicates it is a premium product, though I feel In its current form it falls short of providing value for your money. The XPS 13 9310 is a great laptop despite the faults. If Dell ever releases an AMD version with the upcoming Ryzen 5000 series I would reconsider my statement, as Intel's chipset iterations are still behind the competition in my opinion, which would make this device far more appealing.

A juicer that blends
on February 16, 2021

The 3X Bluicer is a novel idea of combining a blender and a juicer into one appliance. Never having owned a juicer before, I was intrigued of the prospect of replacing my current blender with one that can also juice. Part of the allure of the Bluicer is the theoretically space saving aspect of utilizing one base, but I still found it to take up more room than anticipated.
Cabinet space aside, I am pleased with the Bluicer’s performance, providing excellent juices and smoothies. I discovered myself crafting drinks that I otherwise would be hesitant to try such as a green apple, spinach, and celery juice, which was delicious! Being able to juice directly into the blender pitcher was convenient and made it simple to combine fresh juice with blended fruits with one easy to use appliance. For instance; I juiced carrots, pineapple, and oranges into the the pitcher where I had frozen bananas, ice, and some dairy-free vanilla protein powder. Blended together this made great frozen smoothies reminiscent of dreamsicle.
Cleaning is a bit tedious due to the number of components, however it is easy to disassemble and the pulp cup can even be fitted with a plastic grocery bag to further simplify cleaning. Though I am personally unsure of the claimed health benefits of stripping the fiber out of your fruits and veggies, I do feel it is far healthier to pre-packaged juices or drinks. The Bluicer is perfect for someone who is interested in juicing but also needs a blender for making a wide assortment of smoothies, cocktails, or even frappes.

The Blue Pure 411 Auto air purifier takes a simple approach to smart air quality management with an integrated particle sensor, Auto mode setting, and LED air quality display. The ENERGY STAR certified air purifier delivers high performance with one-button control and customizable pre-filter colors in a lightweight, compact package. Independently evaluated and third-party tested for performance as part of the AHAM Verifide® Program for room air cleaners, this air purifier has a Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) of 132 for fine smoke particles, 96 for pollen particles, and 107 for dust particles. Recommended for small rooms like nurseries, guest bedrooms, and home offices with a 360° air intake to completely filters room air about every 12.5 minutes (approx. 4.8x an hour at 190 ft²) on the highest speed. The 3-step combination particle + carbon filter works with Blueair's HEPASilent™ filtration technology to remove 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.1 microns, like pollen, pet dander, mold, bacteria, viruses⁰ and more, while an additional layer of activated coconut carbon traps light household odors. The one-touch enabled Auto mode is designed to help you maintain a comfortable and safe home environment. When enabled, the setting automatically adjusts to real-time conditions reported by the integrated particle sensor. Stay up to date on your air quality with the LED display; it changes color to indicate good, moderate, or poor. Blue Pure 411 Auto quietly cleans the air with less noise than a soft whisper⁶ on low (18 dB) and up to a normal conversation on high (48 dB) – while using less energy than a light bulb (2-10 W) on all speeds.⁷ Change color in seconds with five fabric pre-filter options inspired by Scandinavian nature. The fabric material of the pre-filter catches larger particles and extends the life of the primary filter. Plus, a hidden compartment in the fabric pre-filter keeps the power cord hidden out of sight. Vacuum the fabric or toss it in the washing machine whenever it needs cleaning. Great Air Purifier for Small Spaces
on January 24, 2021

Blueair's new Auto models are a great value offering competitive performance with an integrated air quality sensor that can automatically adjust fan speed. My favorite part about the Blueair Pure Auto line is they are standalone and you do not need to connect the air purifier to the internet. I don’t feel the internet of things is necessary to have a quality product, so it is refreshing to still have improvements made to standalone models.
The Auto feature works great and was able to detect a candle being blown out across the room, adjusting the fan speed accordingly. Under normal operation, the 411 is whisper quiet. Even under moderate load the fan is bearable, but when set to high the noise is distracting at 48dB. Fortunately, the unit won’t switch to high unless you set it there or your environment has particularly poor air quality. Blueair does have two larger models that are sized for spaces over 200 sqft, but the 411 seems to work well enough in my space. The 360 filter design is ideal, though it is a little top heavy due to the bulk of the weight at one end.
The fabric pre-filter is removable for easy washing and can even be interchanged with other colors. There is also an area that folds over offering built in cord management, a nice touch. All together, this provides a flexible, clean look that works with your space and isn’t an eyesore.
If you are looking for a small purifier for a space under 200 sqft, the 411 Auto is the perfect choice to blend in and not have to manually adjust the fan speed.

An affordable robot vacmop that works!
on December 30, 2020

Having owned several “robot” vacs, I was still in search of one that didn’t need to be monitored during use and could navigate the home with ease. Though some do this well, they aren’t without their downsides. From the initial mapping being an arduous process to having to clean hair from the brush roll constantly, the bot vacs can quickly loose their appeal.
Shark has surprisingly addressed my complaints and released not only a great performing bot but also an affordable one! The RV2001WD features Shark’s latest IQ Navigation which performs flawless navigation and object detection thanks to the "AI laser vision". I have found it to not only superior in navigation to the older IR navigation but also to another brand bot I own which uses LiDAR. The Shark navigates and cleans with ease, rarely bumping into a wall or object. Initially, I was put off by the rattling noise of the self cleaning mechanism but the noise lessened over time and the vac isn’t any noisier than other robot vacs I have owned. The self cleaning brush roll is worth the added noise, as previously cleaning the brush is always a tedious process. I am happy to report that after using the Shark AI Robot Vac daily or the past 3 weeks I have not had to clean the brush roll once. In fact the vac performs so well on its own, my only daily ritual is changing the mop pad, adding fluid, and emptying the bin periodically. This brings me to my only real complaint and that is the mopping fluid reservoir is a bit small. The vac can only mop what I would estimate to be 300 sqft before it runs out of solution on the default setting. The vac performance however is good, and I don’t have any complaints with how well it cleans.
You can adjust the mopping and vacuum levels in the app to tweak the performance to better accommodate your needs. The app paired with the vac easily and I found the initial setup simple thanks to the intuitive app. I found the scheduling simple, yet effective. During it’s initial discovery pass it maps and detects rugs/carpets in your home, but the app makes it easy to edit the map and mark no go zones, carpeted areas, or high traffic zones. Since the bot automatically detects when the mopping reservoir is connected to determine the cleaning mode, it then dictates if it will traverse rugs or carpet which is a great feature. Though this model is lacking the auto emptying bin of more expensive models, I found the performance and price point to be perfect for most people interested in buying a robot vac. If you like the idea of a robot vac or have owned them in the past but disliked how much you had to baby sit them you may want to give this one a try.

Essential Arlo experience with enhanced capacity
on December 8, 2020
Posted by: PeboQuattro

The Essential XL is a nice entry level wire-free camera for the Arlo ecosystem. For the price you get a wire-free, weather-resistant, 1080p security camera with an integrated spotlight. Like the Essential, the Essential XL also dropped the old Arlo requirement of needing to install a basestation and it can join your existing WiFi. This is great for homes where there is already adequate wireless lan coverage and you don’t want to install another proprietary hub or basestation. With that said, the Essential XL can also join an Arlo basestation easily with the added benefit of having local storage of footage.
The Essential cameras design are similar to previous Arlo camera’s but notably missing the magnetic mount and an access door to remove the battery. Arlo transitioned to an integrated battery design in this model likely to save costs. Unfortunate, as batteries will eventually loose their efficiency and need replaced. Fortunately, the XL has an extended battery which can last up to an entire year on a single charge! Though I don’t think the battery will stay charged for an entire year based on my used case (used 10% over 2 week period), but the enhanced battery is a great improvement. Where as you lose swappable batteries you gain a feature missing from the previous entry-level Arlo cameras, an integrated light. The light is similar to those found on the Arlo Pro/Ultra cameras, which provides decent illumination of the immediate area around the camera allowing “color night vision”. There is also a built-in siren that can be triggered through automation or activated manually as well. The camera performed as well as my Arlo Pro 2/3 cameras, with image quality in between the two. Daytime performance is similar to the Pro 2 but nighttime clarity and color are improved thanks to the spotlight design shared with the Pro 3. Though the 1080p image isn’t as detailed as the 2k Pro 3s, it is still clear enough to identify people and animals from over 15’ away.
Ultimately, the Essential XL is just that...the essential features of the Arlo experience with double the battery capacity and without the fluff.

Connects directly to Wi-Fi without the clutter of extra gear. The Arlo Essential is wire-free and weather-resistant to deliver fast, easy installation and flexibility to get the perfect camera view. With the integrated spotlight, see important features like faces and licenses plates in full color, at night with color night vision. Ward off unwanted guests by triggering the siren or integrated spotlight automictically or manually from the Arlo App. Receive smarter alerts for people, vehicles and packages and take quicker action like sound the siren, call a friend or dial emergency services with the included trial of Arlo Secure**. Works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit*** and Samsung SmartThings.

4 appliances in one!

The Panasonic Home Chef 4-in-1 is a fantastic device that combines a Microwave, Air Fryer, Convection Oven and a Broiler into 1 relatively compact package. Visually, the microwave has a clean look without excessive graphics or gimmicks. The front and interior are stainless but curiously the top and sides are painted silver. The controls are easy to understand and use, though the dial rotation does feel a little cheap for the price point, giving it more resistance and smoother turning would improve the feel.
Let me go ahead and lay out my main complaint with the device, at 1000W it takes longer to reheat or cook food compared to my previous 1200W microwave. Obviously, it has 20% percent less output and that is to be expected but if you primarily need a microwave be aware of the output. Fortunately, it makes up for it by eliminating the need to have a separate air fryer you have to pull out or preheating your larger oven if you are preparing a smaller dish. Initially I was skeptical on how well this would perform as a convection oven but I was pleasantly surprised and found myself using this function far more than I anticipated. Where the inverter microwave took a little longer to cook compared to my old microwave, the convection oven reduced the cook time and also preheated far faster (due to size). Despite only have 1.2 cubic ft of cook space it can accommodate an entire frozen pizza with room to spare. The Air Fryer performed good as well and is far more convenient compared to pulling out my other air fryer. You do have to keep track of some accessories to utilize with the different modes but that didn’t surprise me and they are easily stored when not in use. Lastly, I found using the FlashXpress broiler function a fast to broil foods. The microwave can even perform a combination of microwave, oven, or broil to cook your meals faster without compromised texture or consistency.
One downside to have a microwave with an oven built in is the heat generated makes the top and rear considerably hot. Do not put anything on top of this microwave as it gets very hot when using functions besides the inverter microwave. Overall, despite my nit picks, it is easily the most versatile microwave oven I have ever owned!

Hip to be square

Recently, I have been taking photos with my Polaroid of my daughter to put in her baby book but I found myself wanting better quality photos. The Canon SELPHY Square printer is perfect for this. The SELPHY Square is a portable dye sublimation printer that delivers fast vintage style square prints that are cheaper and offer better clarity than similar Polaroid photos. My wife appreciates how the photo paper even has a removable backing so that it can stick directly to paper. The printer is battery operated so it is very portable and the app provides printing direct from your phone. The app does feel a little dated and clunky but it is manageable. Unfortunately the printer has an ad-hoc wifi that you must join every time you print, but the app automates this...mostly. I would have liked to have seen it support AirPrint for iOS devices but it isn’t a deal breaker. I could nitpick how it only came with enough ink and paper to print 5 photos (sold separately as a set) or how you can’t eliminate the borders but it works well despite the missing features. The SELPHY provides the square look with better quality prints in a convenient, portable design.

The key(board) to happiness

The MX Keys for Mac is an outstanding alternative to the Apple Magic Keyboard with excellent key travel and feel. The dished keys are very comfortable to type on and provide excellent rebound without being loud. I prefer a quiet keyboard but often they provide mushy key feel, the MX Keys for Mac however is practically perfect.
The keyboard only last 10 days with backlighting on according to the literature but can manage 5 months with backlighting off. Fortunately it recharges with USB C, as any modern device should. The smart illumination adjusts to ambient lighting and even detects hand presence with a welcoming glow as your hands approach the keys. The Mac version provides the often used option and command keys as well as the default function row key bindings. The MX Keys remembers up to 3 device pairings and features 3 key mappings to these devices to make it easy to switch between them. It pairs easily with bluetooth but also includes a wireless receiver as an alternative (FileVault can delay Bluetooth connectivity). I enjoy using the keyboard with my Macbook as well as my iPad. I was actually surprised how well it works with the iPad, allowing be to be far more productive than using the on-screen keyboard. The function key bindings even work great on iPadOS, a nice feature. Though the Space Grey color compliments some Apple devices well, I was surprised to find the top plate is actually plastic. In fact I think the keyboard may be mostly plastic, though the underside could be reinforced with aluminum but it may just be a composite. Materials aside, the keyboard feels solid and has a nice weight to it lending itself to feel like a quality device. Thought the angle is not adjustable, it is pitched perfectly for me and Logitech generously applied 6 rubber feet to prevent it from sliding around.
For portability, I would like to see a version without the 10-key numeric pad but that’s just me. If you are invested in the Apple ecosystem, the MX Keys for Mac provides better a better typing experience while being quieter than the Magic Keyboard. Period.

One toaster to rule them all
on July 13, 2020
Posted by: PeboQuattro

My old toaster was something of an enigma. Setting it to 1 resulted in warm bread while 3 provided charred slices of rock. Naturally, setting it to 2 would provide results on both ends of the spectrum depending on astral alignment. Needless to say, I was in need of new toaster. The R180 promised a revolution at a price point that would make even the most seasoned salesman blush. Is it worth the price of admission?
The Revolution Cooking R180 2-Slice High-Speed Smart Toaster is a modern take on the often over looked appliance. With an intuitive large touch screen, the R180 provides a visual indicator of how your food will be toasted eliminating the guess work. This alone makes it so even I can manage to toast food to perfection. The cooking selection features a carousel of foods including Bread, Bagel, Waffle, Pastry, and English Muffin. All but the pastry have the option to select your toasting level with visual feedback on how the food will come out. Additional smart features include auto adjusting which internal elements run during the cook and crisping cycles, resulting in toast perfection. The heating elements have more surface area than most toasters, delivering a fast cook time with consistent results. The automatic lift mechanism raises and lowers your toasted delicacies with a smooth motion. No jarring jack-in-the-box spring action here, your toasted bagels will rise up slowly with sophistication. As impressive as the mechanism is, hopefully the longevity of the motor out lasts the mere 1 year warranty. For the price, a longer warranty would be appreciated. One other short coming is the clock. This smart toaster only tracks time while plugged in, apparently adding an internal battery would have made it a genius and Revolution Cooking is thwarting the machines taking over humanity one toaster at a time.
The toaster is clearly a luxury at the price, but for something I use so often it is nice to have an appliance that is easy, fast, and consistent. Just don’t ask it for the time.
