Hygienic Humidifier
on February 1, 2023
Posted by: PeboQuattro
The Dyson Purifier Humidify+Cool PH03 is an all-in-one air purifying and humidifying device that improves the air quality in your home while also maintaining humidity levels. The device is larger than other Dyson purifiers and also nearly 20 pounds empty, so don’t plan on moving it around the house. Fortunately, the device covers a large area and seems to perform well. The signature Dyson design doesn’t exactly blend in and at 3’ high and nearly a foot wide, you will want to verify you have a dedicated space for it.
In my opinion, the standout features of the Dyson Purifier Humidify+Cool PH03 are it’s bacteria reduction measures. In my experience, humidifiers tend to develop bacteria or mold internally. Often times, the smaller cool mist humidifiers can not be taken apart and with evaporative models you have to maintain the evaporator pad which is prone to bacteria. However, the Dyson PH03 has mitigated this with a silver woven evaporator pad which is resistant to bacteria growth, as well as a UVC LED in the water inlet to purify the water prior to evaporation. In addition, the device can clean itself through an automated cleaning mode! Granted the device is costly, but Dyson has put in some desirable features that aren’t common in this market. Besides humidifying, the device uses a HEPA H13 filter to capture 99.97% of airborne particles including dust, pollen, allergens, and other contaminants as small as 0.3 microns. The filter also features a carbon layer able to capture harmful VOCs and gases, further reducing indoor air pollution. Both the filter replacement and cleaning process are simple, and the device even alerts you when it's time to change the filter or run a cleaning cycle, so you never have to worry about it.
In addition to humidifying and purifying the air, the device provides pseudo cooling similar to a an evaporative (swamp) cooler. Though you can’t really control this operation directly it does seem to provide cooler air while the humidifier is enabled. You can also turn of the humidifier completely if desired. The Dyson Purifier Humidify+Cool PH03 is also very easy to use, with a user-friendly app and magnetic remote control. The app shows the current temperature, humidity, and air quality, and you can control all functions as well as schedule modes of operation. In addition to standard oscillation modes like other Dyson purifiers, this model features a breeze mode that simulates a “refreshing breeze”. It seemed like a gimmick but I actually found this to be more appealing than traditional oscillation methods. The unit is fairly quiet when running below level 5, but higher speeds are distracting. I found when setting purify to AUTO, the device tended to ramp up the fan to high speed frequently even when air quality was good. The device even stayed at higher fan speeds for prolonged duration leading to several comments from my significant other. Hopefully this behavior can be tweaked through a firmware update by Dyson. Fortunately you can manually set or schedule lower speeds and the device still provides a decent volume of air flow, humidity, and cooling.
Overall, the Dyson PH03 is a unique purifier and humidifier that improves the air quality in your home while also hygienically humidifying or cooling the air. Like all Dyson products, it has thoughtful design and engineering which sets it apart from other similar devices. While the price is high, the unique features of the humidifier provide peace of mind knowing it is far less likely to develop bacteria and distribute it throughout your home.

Nice Portable, Compact Hub
on December 21, 2022

The Hyper DUO Pro 7-in-2 is great accessory to your MacBook, expanding the capability and number of ports available Hyper has included most of the common requirements such as HDMI, micro SD, USB-A/C, and a 3.5mm jack. In addition to the typical I/O, Hyper includes a full size gigabit ethernet and Thunderbolt 4 pass through (40Gbps) and 100W PD. On paper and mostly in practice it works great. For my use case, I enjoy how compact and light the hub is making it easy to store in my bag. The gray color matches and compliments my MacBook Pro and I like how it is not dangling or putting additional strain on the port but rather attaches the side and even has interchangeable plastic supports to keep it in place, depending on your model MacBook.
Everything is not perfect and there are a few negatives I have encountered with this hub, though they don’t apply to everyone. First, the plastic strips prevent the lid from closing. Without them the hub sticks out a few millimeters from the side and does not feel secure. Second, the spring loaded ethernet port makes it difficult to remove the ethernet cable as it maintains force on the clasp unless you hold it open while releasing the cable. Lastly, there is only one PD port which is also your thunderbolt port. Since the device attaches to both open thunderbolt ports on my device I can not use a thunderbolt accessory and charge the MacBook at the same time when using the hub. For my intended use this is not a deal breaker but I do feel they should have at least made the second USB-C port PD as well. Overall, a mostly well designed docking station with limitations.

We spend 90% of our time indoors where the air is often 2 to 5 times worse than the air outside. Continuous monitoring of indoor air quality is key for minimizing negative health effects, preventing illness and increasing productivity, energy and good health. Airthings, air quality specialists and experts in radon, created the Airthings Wave Plus as the first smart air quality monitor with radon detection. Wave Plus has since won multiple awards for consumer electronics and innovation and was among the 2019 TIME Magazine inventions of the year. It is the perfect solution for homeowners to gain full visibility into six indoor air factors; radon, carbon dioxide (CO2), airborne chemicals (TVOCs), humidity, temperature and air pressure. Airthings Wave Plus includes a free app to connect to your smartphone (iOS/Android) via Bluetooth and an online dashboard with advanced analytics. Battery operated allowing you to install anywhere, with 16 months battery life. Please allow for a 7-Day settling period for the sensors to adjust to their new environment. By monitoring daily and continuously, you can avoid radon side effects, get the best indoor humidity level, low voc levels and low carbon dioxide levels. Made to the best indoor air quality standards, Airthings Wave Plus is essential in every home.

Easy to setup air quality monitor
on November 6, 2022
Posted by: PeboQuattro
The Airthings Wave Plus is a smart indoor air quality and radon monitor that combined with an app on your phone can provide realtime and historical data on your indoor air quality. As radon levels can very overtime, it is great to have a long term monitoring device.
The device, for better or worse, looks reminiscent of a small smoke detector minus any buttons or the ability to alert you to carbon monoxide. Of course the Wave Plus is not meant to replace your smoke/CO alarms but rather supplement them by monitoring your air for harmful radon as well as carbon dioxide and VOCs. The Wave Plus also provides humidity, temperature, and pressure values which combine with the radon, VOC, and CO2 measurements to effect your overall air quality score of good, fair, or poor; which is then displayed as a motion activated color ring of green, yellow, and red respectively.
Though an Airthings account was required to setup the device, the process was a breeze and the Wave Plus connected via bluetooth in a snap. The app is clean and straightforward, displaying realtime values that correlate with the device’s LED color. You can view historic data, though you have to view the the “web dashboard” within the app for 12 hour or specified time frames. I hope they can incorporate the data into the app better without having to change dashboards, as currently it feels redundant. While I was interested in determining our Radon levels in our home, thanks to the Wave Plus I am now aware of the elevated CO2 that accumulates in our home. I was surprised to find that in the first 48 hours I had only fair air quality due to indoor humidity and slightly elevated CO2 levels. Fortunately, my radon levels are low which is what I had anticipated but it is good to have confirmation. After the sensors calibrated for a week my quality has been mostly good apart from on occasion you light a candle or when the coastal humidity overcomes my air conditioner’s ability to keep the humidity levels below 60%.
Overall I like that the Airthings Wave Plus provides peace of mind knowing what your radon levels are as well as monitoring your air for other potential harmful contaminants. It also has been a nice reminder that, weather permitting, it may be good idea to open the windows to let in some fresh air and ventilate your home!

Perfect first FPV drone for practically anyone
on September 7, 2022
Posted by: PeboQuattro
DJI has nailed it with the new Avata. DJI’s newest drone is a cinewhoop design with the polish and refinement of a major consumer drone manufacturer. Traditionally, you would build (or pay premium for a RTF or BNF) your FPV quad leaving you to source all of the necessary components. While there is something to be said for investing the time to learn all the skills involved with building a quad, many would like to just fly. Having flown tiny whoops, I anticipated the Avata to be familiar but also had high expectations coming from flying Mavic drones in the past (Mavic Pro, Mini, Mavic 3). DJI did not disappoint, providing a fantastic cinewhoop solution that is far more approachable for new FPV pilots or even seasoned GPS pilots.
In the box of the Pro-View Combo, is the Avata, 1 Intelligent Flight Battery, Motion Controller, new Goggles 2 with supporting hardware, Goggles 2 battery, 2 spare props/screws, a charging adapter, short USB C cable, and an USB A to C adapter. The combo does not include a power adapter (AC) or a long USB C cable to interface with the goggles, I also feel a full set of replacement props wouldn’t have broke the bank for DJI.
The Goggles 2 are a mixed bag, though I don’t have experience with their previous FPV goggles, I have used analog FPV goggles and found the image to be much improved. While not comparable to modern VR headsets, the FOV was adequate and the image (1080p) was very crisp apart from slight blurring at the perimeter of my visual field. I was able to scale the image down some but it does reduce the immersive feel since the image does not fill your field of view. The Goggles 2 have comprehensive IPD and diopter adjustment, which is good because it will not accommodate glasses while wearing. DJI does provide frames for prescription lenses but I found it wasn’t need as my prescription was well within the -8.0D to +2.0D diopter range. I really like how compact the Goggles are, making it a breeze to fold the antennas and use the including eyepiece cover to store them in your bag. The signal is pretty good, though I did experience some video breakup while flying low to the ground through a heavily wooded area on my property about 250’ away. The battery life of the Goggles are ok, I managed to get almost 2 hours of operation.
At 410g (Registration Required!), the Avata is heavier than most FPV drones of proportional size. With its ducted design and pusher configuration, the compact Avata is most similar to a 3” cinewhoop. The Avata excels at low altitude flight and flying close to obstacles, hitting tight gaps both indoors and out. While your family may not appreciate the screaming banshee, it is capable of providing smooth indoor FPV footage that is becoming more popular. While flying inside your home may not be practical, it is perfect for real estate or venue promotion. While the included motion controller lacks the precision of the older DJI FPV Controller 2, it is actually makes sense considering their target market. Traditional FPV has a steep learning curve but I was able to hand the motion controller to my 12-year old son who picked it up instantly. The motion controller is very intuitive and provides most of the FPV experience with one hand, sans flips and rolls, without the skill. Fortunately, DJI made the Avata compatible with the FPV Controller 2 and full manual mode is available. In manual, the default rates are a little high and DJI doesn’t allow near as much customization but I was able to dial it in after a few minutes. Unfortunately I had a few bugs in my time flying the Avata in manual mode (acro). I had one occasion where it refused to enter manual mode due to erroneous height error and a few times it spontaneously switched back to normal mode during manual flight. While frustrating, DJI is known for patching release issues with subsequent firmware upgrades and these issues should get ironed out in the near future. Flight time is great, I averaged a respectable 10-15 minutes depending on how aggressive I was flying.
The video quality out of the Avata is very good. The camera features a 1/1.7 “ CMOS sensor, f2.8 aperture, 48 MP sensor size (down sampled), and 155 degree FOV capable of capture 4K/60 at 150Mbps. Image stabilization is on board as well, with your choice of RockSteady or HorizonSteady to smooth your videos. DJI even embeds gyro data for export to a third party stabilization, if you desire. The single axis gimbal has a range of -80 to +65 degrees, though the ducts come into frame when pointed downward. Since both your FPV flight and your capture camera are the same it simplifies the flying, knowing what you see in frame is the same as being captured. For a beginner, I also like how you can adjust your camera angle on the fly letting you determine your preferred flight angle and in doing so speed. While not the fastest, I feel the Avata is fast enough for a cinewhoop capable of reaching 60 MPH in manual flight. However, with the included motion controller you are limited to normal and sport modes with speeds of 18 MPH and 32 MPH respectively. Fortunately the Avata is fairly rugged as well, having had a few high speed spills with it so far and it has only suffered minor cosmetic damage. My only real issue with the Avata is the SD card/USB port location inside the duct. It is unfortunate as this has the potential to be very problematic should the cover come loose over time. So far it locks in place firmly but time will tell. The placement would be less of an issue if WiFi transfer was available but as of launch it is not available. I am not sure if there is a hardware limitation for omitting it but it really is a let down for what otherwise is a fantastic product.
The Avata is probably my favorite drone I have owned and I am having a blast flying it. I feel for the price, the versatility and gradual learning curve can’t be beat. Again, I feel DJI has the correct strategy by including a motion controller as I imagine the intended audience will be able to pick it up and start flying right out of the box. If you are new the hobby or have flown GPS drones, the Avata is the perfect gateway into the world of FPV.

Lightweight, great value
on September 5, 2022

The Shark WANDVAC cordless stick vacuum is perfect for quick cleanup with its lightweight and thoughtful design that transforms from a stick vacuum to a hand vac with ease. While no replacement for an upright, the WANDVAC provides surprising suction (and noise) for its diminished size, cleaning hard floors and low pile area rugs while keeps the self cleaning brush roller hair free. The minuscule dust bin is oddly designed to flip out or down depending on how the WANDVAC is oriented, leading to at least a few dust ejections on the floor until you master it. Shark also placed the button to empty the WANDVAC adjacent to the power, further increasing the odds an unsuspecting spouse may inadvertently empty the bin prematurely. I also found the pre filter in the dust bin had to be manually cleaned often, requiring you to remove hair and impacted dirt from the mesh cone. Another downside is the WANDVAC will not stay upright on its own, Shark designed it to stay on the included charging dock. Fortunately we had space for it near an outlet where it would be out of sight, though I imagine that may be an issue for some.
Once you overcome these obstacles, the WANDVAC is a breeze to use at under 6 pounds including the base. The WANDVAC is very nimble and easily pivots on hard floors with one hand, getting under furniture and around chairs. With one hand, you can detach either the motorized base or the extension wand leaving an even lighter 2 pound hand vac. The WANDVAC really excels at edging or even cleaning hard to reach places by not having the weight of a larger cordless vacuum.
Even considering the shortfalls, the Shark WANDVAC makes a great choice for an additional floor cleaner or primary for someone who has a single bedroom apartment . I still feel the WANDVAC is a good value but it isn’t for everyone.

The Anker 633 MagGo magnetic battery offers a unique take on their traditional design. This 10000 mAh battery provides a versatile combination of an 18W USB and a 20W USB C port with 7.5 W wireless charging and MagSafe connection. The connection is very strong, especially with a MagSafe case, providing a secure attachment for on the go charging. The iPhone can even be positioned landscape and tilted back with the built in kickstand. The 633 charged my iPhone 13 Pro from 20% to 100% in about two hours, while reducing its SOC 50%. The 20W USB C can also passthrough charge, charging both the 633 and the phone simultaneously. With a case on, I found the magnetic force too strong to be used as a table side charger and the 7.7oz weight to be too much to carry with it attached to the phone. I think in this particular case, the Anker 633 would have been better suited with a smaller capacity battery to reduce weight and improve portability. I still like the form factor and will keep it in my bag for charging on the go.

The Roborock S7 MaxV is a robot vacuum that has been created to make cleaning your floor completely automatic. It is a robot vacuum and mop combo that you can genuinely set and forget for weeks at a time. Its ReactiveAI 2.0 obstacle avoidance system with enhanced hazard recognition keeps it away from hazards, so you don’t have to clear the floor before it runs. 5100 Pa of suction power deeply cleans dust on wood floors and carpets. The unique VibraRise mopping system scrubs your floor at up to 3000 scrubs per minute to eliminate dried-on stains. It can also lift up when carpet is detected, so you can mop floors and vacuum carpets in one run. To top it off, the Empty Wash Fill Dock is self-emptying and holds up to 7-weeks of debris, refills the water tank, and washes the mop, ready for another run so you don't have to lift a finger!

Floor Cleaning Automation
on August 5, 2022
Posted by: PeboQuattro
I have owned a fair number of robotic vacuums over the years and feel the technology is finally what it originally promised with the Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra. The S7 MaxV is the latest and currently most advanced robotic vacuum on the market. Building on top of Roborock’s solid LiDAR navigation, capable of mapping your home within .8” of accuracy, is their new Reactive AI comprised of three elements: 3D structured light system, a RGB camera, and a NPU. Where LiDAR has difficult seeing items below its turret, Reactive AI’s front mounted camera system can detect and identify small objects in its cleaning path. In addition, this image processing is done on device and no images saved with Roborock attesting the system is privacy focused. Not to mention it does this mapping and navigation on the fly, out of the box. No need to run a slow initial mapping cycle, it is able to not only map your home on first run but identify obstacles, rooms, furniture and floor types. It really is incredible to see how far they are pushing the technology compared to my previous year old robovac, which was already a jump ahead of my other robotic vacuums I have owned over the years.
The onboard RGB camera also provides the ability to live view through the app. While providing little use during a cleaning cycle, it is suggested it could be used to check on pets and even use the onboard speaker and microphone to really pester them. I could also see using this to check on your home while away, though not really practical as surveillance and more of a novelty. Fortunately you have to physically enable remote viewing on the S7 and you set a live viewing pattern to deter unauthorized access. Of course many are probably more concerned Roborock is trying to see their poor interior design choices, but rest assured Roborock has attained TUV certification with respect to privacy. From what little network traffic I have monitored from the S7, it does not seem to be streaming live video when not activated in the app. In addition to whole home cleaning, you can specify rooms or zones to clean on demand or scheduled. The S7 MaxV has 5100Pa of suction power, but to achieve that number you have to run the vac on Max+ mode which still does not replace the need for a full size vacuum. I prefer to run the S7 MaxV on balanced or turbo, depending on time of day to reduce noise though it still is not as loud as my previous robovac. The S7 detects floor types and using their VibraRise mopping system, can lift the mop pad when traversing carpet instead of dragging the wet pad over carpet or rugs. It is reported the mop pad scrubs 3,000 times a minute, which does a great job maintaining clean floors but obviously will not work miracles or clean grout.
The Roborock app is by far, the most well polished and customizable app for a robotic vacuum I have used. With intuitive maps you can easily modify room demarcation and floor type, though the S7 does a commendable job at doing this automatically with its Reactive AI. though I prefer a standard 2D map, you have the option to view a 3D model or even use your iPhone to create a Matrix view overlaying a wireframe of your home onto the map. Within the app you can even adjust everything from the Reactive AI’s functionality, schedules, and carpet settings to even how the dock will perform.
The final piece of the puzzle that lets this device finally achieve less hands on interaction is the Ultra dock. The dock further automates floor cleaning by cleaning the mop pad, emptying dust bin, and refilling of mop water in S7. Inside the dock, there is a cleaning apparatus, tanks for storying clean/dirty water, and replaceable dust bag filter. Roborock even lets you customize the behavior of the S7 and the dock so you can adjust frequency and water usage. With balanced settings, I can get 5 days of cleaning before needing to empty the dirty water tank or refill the clean water tank. Unfortunately, I have found if I wait that long the dirty water tank develops an odor. I have found maintaining the dock every few days reduces this but that will vary depending on you cleaning area and environment. It would have been nice to have a bagless bin in the dock to reduce maintenance items to buy but it seems the bag should last a couple months. My only other issue is the mop pad, while “clean”, is constantly damp despite the S7 lifting the mop pad when docked to help dry. A recent update does show an “auto drying” option that will require a separate dryer module but it is unfortunate that the dock did not ship with this.
Despite a few short comings, the Ultra dock finally closes the gap on floor cleaning automation. With the S7 MaxV’s excellent mapping, navigation, and obstacle avoidance combined with the automation of the Ultra dock Roborock has solved many of the downsides of owning a robovac. Now, if only our robot overlords could help me with the laundry.

Signature Marshall Sound In Your Pocket
on May 16, 2022
Posted by: PeboQuattro
from Texas
How Often Used:3-5 times a week
The Motif ANC In-Ear headphones offers signature Marshall styling in a discrete, yet rugged design while maintaining the tone Marshall is known for. The design of the earbuds don’t just look tough, they are also IPX5 rated while the scratch resistant case is IPX4. I am not sure what material voodoo Marshall has cooked up for the case but so far it’s scratch free and the cracked leather look is a nice nod to their roots. The case can be charged with either the included USB C cable or wirelessly, offering a claimed 20 hours of playback. The earbuds offer a respectable 4.5 hours of playback while a quick 15-minute charge will provide an hour of listening.
Sound wise they are really good. Compared to my AirPods Pro, the default EQ is rich and offers enhanced mid-range and low end. Marshall also provides 5 other EQ presets to dial in the sound to match your content. Everything from blues rock like The Black Keys and the indie sounds of Florence + The Machine to progressive jams of Electric Light Orchestra and heavy riffs of Gojira all sound great despite their different, complex tonality. The earbuds feature auto play/pause with removal and with familiar touch controls, you can easily change between ANC (active noice cancelation), transparency mode, and off. Three tip sizes are included to ensure proper fit. For me, the tips seal so well that even with ANC off I have to enable transparency mode to adequately hear my surroundings. ANC also works fantastic for when I need a little less external input like doing yard work. I like how you can customize the Motif for your taste such as the interaction sounds, ANC/transparency levels, touch control actions, and even extend the battery lifespan by setting an 80% charge option.
For the price, I feel they are good value and offer strong sound and performance. The Motif ANC headphones are a great choice regardless of your preferred music genre, providing rich Marshall tone in a small, striking design.

Winning Combination

The Phillips Sonicare Power Flosser System is a perfect combination of a water flosser and a Sonicare electric toothbrush. I have used Sonicares for years and always have preferred them over other electric toothbrushes. Though I did own another brand water flosser in the past, I didn’t care for the loud noise or the operation (once on you had to hold the button on handle to not spray water). Phillips has improved on all of the shortcomings and includes a convenient charging base for the included Sonicare toothbrush.
First thing I noticed was how you can turn it on and select your operation mode (clean, deep clean, sensitive, or massage) without shooting water everywhere. The flosser handle magnetically attaches to the base and the cord neatly coils into the unit when not in use. Operation is very quiet, yet powerful and easily adjustable on the fly. It was simple to find a setting that worked well while accommodating my sensitive gums. While they include 3 nozzles to customize the flosser, I found the Quad Stream to provide the best performance. The pulse wave feature ramps the flosser pressure up and down chronically to help guide you from tooth to tooth, though I found myself staying in some hard to clean areas for multiple “cycles”. I am not sure it will completely eliminate the need to floss periodically with traditional filament, but it does a pretty good job and is far more convenient and easier on my gums.
The included Sonicare is a really nice toothbrush with all of the features you would expect. The toothbrush offers 3 cleaning modes and 3 power levels which offer a customizable cleaning experience. Operation was the familiar 30 second quadrant cleaning I was accustom to but it may be slightly quieter and stronger than my old handle. Though only 1 brush head is provided, Phillips does include a travel case and an extra charger that is separate from the power flosser base. Overall it is a really nice kit that provides everything you would need to improve and maintain your oral health.

Treat Yourself

As I read the description of the Foreo UFO described as "the world’s first smart mask treatment to offer spa-level facial treatments in just 90 seconds”, her eyes lit up with excitement. Spa days are her love language and this was almost like the device that would keep on giving.
She was excited to get started using it right away.
Upon opening the sleek white box, you will find instruction manuals, a USB charging cord and a package of 2 different types of sheet masks.
The Foreo beauty app needs to be downloaded to your phone, to select treatment types and is super easy to use.
She just so happened to have two breakouts around the time it arrived so she opted for the Make My Day mask.
The experience, she felt was pretty relaxing lasting about 90 seconds. The app starts it out explaining each step so you know what to do and what to expect.
Start by moving the device around your face and neck in a circular motion to spread the mask essence evenly. It slowly starts to warm and emits a red LED light to calm inflammation. Next up, it switches to the green LED light with the science of its anti-aging benefits.
The pulsing begins shortly thereafter pushing the serum from the sheet mask deep into the skin for maximum hydration benefits.
She did note, that by the end of the cycle, the serum had absorbed into her skin and her skin felt extremely moisturized. She struggles with dryness and usually applies her high end moisturizer, morning and night after cleansing. She was able to use her moisturizer less, which is helpful, as the packages of the sheet masks are a bit pricey if you were to use them one to two times a day as recommended.
She did feel a noticeable improvement in the texture of her skin almost overnight. It felt more smooth and supple.
As far as the two breakouts, she can’t say for sure if aided in the healing process, but she did feel that the treatment helped dry out the breakouts more quickly than her regular facial cleansing routine.
Due to the flat, circular design, she did feel that the UFO was hard to maneuver around her under eye area and nose.
However, the device is soft and fits nicely into the palm of your hand.
With everything having to be charged daily these days, adding another device was less than appealing, but she found the battery life to be impressive.
