Nice with limitations

I have been using the Surface Pro 3 at work for quite a while and is nearing end of life and when this version of the Surface Pro Line came out, I was interested in giving it a go. It is definitely a niche product and not going to be for everyone.
Build - Microsoft has certainly scored big here with the build quality as it feels like a high end tablet with just enough weight to feel substantial but not light enough to feel cheaply made. I love the rounded edges and the glass meets the metal perfectly. 5/5 here.
Display - Simply gorgeous 2880 x 1920. Oddly though - small bezel on right and left, larger bezel top and bottom. It does not take away from the great resolution but the optics look off a bit. 4/5 here.
Sound and Camera - No issues here. Music and video playback sounded great and zoom calls were crystal clear. 5/5 here.
Battery Life - Microsoft boasts 15 hours - I was only able to get about 11.5 hours with simple normal day to day tasks - email, browsing web, etc. 4/5 here.
Charging - In the year of 2021 I cannot understand for the life of me why there are proprietary chargers as this machine comes with. A large brick that attaches to another cord that then attaches to the Surface Pro X. In the era of simple USB-C charging capability, this is simply a big negative. This is the same charger that I had with my Surface Pro 3 and I had to buy 3 chargers over the 5 years of using it as the wire that connects to the 1-inch connector to the machine would bend over time and become nonfunctional. 2/5 here.
Processor and ARM - I am mixed on this platform for this type of device - Windows 11 is a very welcome refresh from the 10 version - a more modern streamlined appearance. Having Windows 11 makes one feel that it can and should run just about anything but with ARM, this is simply not the case. For example - a very simply interface such as Sonicwall Netextender cannot be installed on this device to remote connect to my office. This program is not a processor hog and this machine could easily handle the task but unfortunately, it cannot be installed. I feel this machine is in a confused grey zone of wanting to be a tablet (with LTE capability available - not on this unit) and also wanting to be a full-fledged Windows 11 Laptop (with the keyboard/pen attached). 3.5/5 here.
Price - Despite its beautiful build quality, I cannot justify the price - $1100 for the tablet plus another $280 for the Keyboard/Pen combo puts you at $1380 - simply too much. I could maybe justify $1100 for all combined - maybe. 3/5 here.
All in all, this is an interesting device that is beautiful in design, does tablet computing well and tries to do laptop computing. Overall, I will give this a 4/5 while understanding it’s limitations as this is what the device was designed for. It is simply too expensive for what it does and equally importantly, what it cannot do. Would I recommend to a friend - likely not.

The Dell XPS 17 laptop delivers powerful performance in an incredibly thin form factor. The stunning 4-sided InfinityEdge UHD+ display enables an amazing screen to body ratio (93.7%) and a 17-inch screen in a 15-inch size form factor. In fact, it’s smaller than 48% of 15-inch laptops. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 graphics feature unique dual opposite outlet fans, that increase fan airflow by approximately 30% and drive cooling airflow in both directions, resulting in more airflow overall and improved skin temperatures. A 100% Adobe RGB display enables you to edit your videos with confidence in their color. 100% of the enclosure is sculpted by a CNC (computer numerical control) machining process. A high precision, machine-milled aluminum chassis creates an elegant design with high build quality that’s stronger and stiffer than magnesium or plastic. A premium 17" touch laptop with a thin and light design.

Simply the Best!!

First and foremost, this is one beautiful machine and certainly worthy of the XPS designation (Extreme Performance System). This 17 inch model has the size of most 15 inch laptops on the market but weighs in at a heavy 5.3 pounds (due to it being packed full of hardware and having the 4k touch screen). This is by no means a knock on this machine as it has the best of the best for any computer out there.
Setup of this Dell took all of a few minutes and transferring all my files, pictures and music took a little over an hour (175gb). The USB-C thunderbolt transfer was rather quick for this large of file transfer. A very nice extra came with this laptop – a USB-C dongle that can attach USB-A and HDMI – the laptop has neither natively which allows to keep the slim form factor of the chassis.
The screen (4k UHD touch) is simply outstanding – colors seem to pop off the screen and at times seem 3d like – especially the preinstalled background pic of the water flowing through granite rock faces. The touch screen is responsive and does not seem to collect fingerprints as much as my old laptop.
Battery life was a little less than I expected – approximately 8hours - even with the screen brightness turned down to 20%. Perhaps this is due to intense computing testing I put the machine though over the first 3 days. The last full day I used it as I normally would, and the battery was plenty sufficient to last all day.
Over the last 4 days I have tested this machine with gaming on PlayStation Now and while this is technically not a gaming laptop, it certainly handled its own with no lag or latency noticed. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 card was sufficient enough and the laptop remained nice and cool with the dual fans installed.
Testing this with my Photoshop Premier Pro account proved that this machine is capable of every form of video editing possible – not one hiccup which was simply a pleasure as my old laptop struggled at times.
Simple pleasures of this machine are numerous – the carbon fiber around the keyboard and trackpad has a soft feel to it and is not cold to touch. The speakers are superb for such a thin machine and the track pad is nicely responsive without too much sensitivity.
I have owned many premium laptops and ultrabooks in my life and this one is my absolute favorite. I was not too sure I was going to like a 17 inch form factor but it is only slightly larger than my previous 15.6 inch laptop. All in all, Dell has a winner here if you can manage the price. The old adage “you get what you pay for” certainly applies in this instance. Highly recommended!

Google - Nest Camera Battery – Snow Review
I have multiple older model Google Nest Cams on my property – the Nest Cam IQ outdoor, the Nest Hello Doorbell as well as the Nest outdoor 2 pack. While those cameras have always performed flawlessly, I always disliked the install process – simply due to the wires needing to be hidden – meant drilling through the house, feeding the wire through to the inside and then finding a nearby outlet etc). I was excited when this product launched as it would fix that install issue.
Installing this camera took all of 2 minutes – 2 screws to attach the magnetized base into my pergola where this camera will reside. Simply the place the camera on the base and position the camera as needed. Connecting to the Google Home app took about 30 seconds and within 3 minutes I had the camera up and running.
The resolution of this camera is as good as the older products and having the video recordings through the Nest Aware Subscription is simply priceless and cost effective. Daytime and nighttime views are flawless and you can filter the video clips to see only what you want to see – people, motion, sound etc.
My only critique is that this camera does not seem to be able to be viewed in the Nest app like all my other Google products noted above, only the Google Home app. Having the two app ecosystems seems tech sloppy to me – I am guessing the Nest app will be going away at some time and the Google home app will prevail. The other issue I see would be theft – would be very very easy – walk up, pluck the camera off the mount – done. Google does have a theft replacement policy for free on its newest products including this one.
Another quality product from Google! I would recommend.

Capable Shaver

Gave this a good 5 days to try out in both dry and wet conditions. For the price this is a very close, capable shaver without the nicks I've had from other shavers. Charge has lasted all week and still has a good deal left. I have a very thick black stubble and this shaver powered through nicely without too many "second passes" needed. I would recommend this shaver!

Interesting Light

Received my light 5 days ago and had a chance to use it over the last 4 full days. I would give this a 5/5 for design as I have always appreciated a mimalistic design. I would give this a 3/5 for the actual light as it is simply to stark white and bright for my taste (subjective of course). I have received many compliments on it's looks but for me, I will not be able to use. I did not see (or feel) any noticeable difference with this light on vs off.

Very capable 13 inch laptop
on May 2, 2021

Microsoft has continued to improve the surface laptop line and now has the addition of choice between Intel processor and AMD Ryzen, both in multiple specifications. My unit is the Intel core i5 with 8gb ram and 512gb SSD.
First impressions on the unboxing proved that this looks and feels like a premium product. I have the sandstone finish and it is a nice change from the constant silver/metallic finishes of almost all brands out there. In the box are the computer, proprietary charger, and paperwork.
Upon initial startup, I found that the laptop, via Cortana, made the process painless and was quite fast. Transferring 280 gb of data (files, music etc.) was surprisingly fast compared to my 4 yr. old core i7 Lenovo product (no knock there as it has been a workhorse).
Once the laptop was set up to my specs, I put this produce through multiple simulations and processing abilities and to my surprise, was able to handle everything with ease. The 11th gen i5 processor is truly a step up from the previous version and quite a bit faster than last year’s iteration (I have a laptop with i5, 10th generation). Even with the additional processing power, the battery life is stellar and every bit was is reported in the spec sheet. I was pleasantly surprised to see this much processing power in this product and so much so that I am going to purchase another for my business needs.
My only negatives to this laptop are the screens bezels are a bit wide and dated compared to other manufacturers. I would also like the ability to increase the RAM on this but unfortunately, this is not possible. I also will never understand proprietary chargers. While the USB C can charge the laptop, it is not as fast as the Microsoft charger that is different than all other manufacturers. In the era of thunderbolt USB-C, and warp charging from other manufacturers via USB C, I do not get the need for yet another unique charger. I know this is personal preference but the tech is there to charge all devices (phone and computers) with only one type of charger. The fruit computers have this issue as well. I would also love to see this computer have a thunderbolt USB C which it unfortunately does not. Not a huge cost increase to the manufacturer and would be appreciated by every purchaser.
All in all, I would recommend this laptop, mostly because of it’s processing power ability. The price is right for what you receive and with just a few tweaks, this could be an outstanding laptop on every level. I do not think you will be disappointed in this offering.

Very Nice Sound Overall
on April 23, 2021
Posted by: JediJeff
from Kansas City
Let me start by saying that I am an avid Sonos member since inception with 12 Sonos products in my home so adding this speaker was quite easy. Plug it in, press the power button and my system recognized it immediately to set up. This process took all of about 60 seconds. Please note that this product only works on the newer Sonos S2 app and will not be recognized by the older Sonos S1 app. For those of you not familiar with these two apps, Sonos’s newest products will only work on the S2 app and some of their older speakers only work on the S1 app. Not too surprising, this angered many original Sonos product users as it essentially “bricked” the old devices. Yes, there is a way to do a split system using both apps but that kind of defeats the purpose of an “easy” ecosystem. Anyway – just a warning in case you have older Sonos products.
The speaker is quite small in a good way and I was pleasantly surprised by the output it produced. No, it will not blow you away with sound but this speaker is not meant for that purpose. It will fit quite nicely in my home office to provide quality sound. You can adjust the bass and sound within the app to your liking and I found that after I did this, it sounded wonderful. The Roam is portable and unplugging it and taking it to my garage worked flawlessly (still on wifi). I then tested it off Wifi as a Bluetooth speaker only which worked fine and sounded the same. Please keep in mind, per the Sonos website, that you cannot have two Roams in a stereo pair via Bluetooth – only on Wifi. And nicely, it held it’s charge for 9 hours in my test.
All in all I am pleasantly surprised by the sound this little speaker can produce and I would recommend this for small spaces and for those that need portability.

Simply Outstanding!

Love this system and to be able to connect to the Sonos ecosystem is wonderful. Set up of this product took just about 3 hours which included digging a trench for the wiring, placing all the speakers, digging the hole for the sub and then wiring all the speakers. I used 14 gauge 4 conductor wire and buried this in conduit. Wiring the speakers was a simple daisy chain configuration for right and left channels which took no time at all (maybe 45minutes). I then connected the left and right channels to the Sonos amp and my S2 app recognized it immediately and within a minute, I was playing music through the speakers. The sound from this system is simply stunning albeit a bit too base heavy from the sub right off the bat. This is easily fixed by going into the system settings in the Sonos app and plating around with the EQ settings. I easily could reduce the base sound from the sub. A couple other minor tweaks and it was perfect (for me). While the price is quite high for this product, I believe it to be fair given the sound quality as well as getting a quality amp to power the system. All in all - I would recommend to anyone who wants a discreet outdoor sound system.

Excellent toaster!

from Kansas City
Perfect timing on receiving this toaster as my last one, purchased over 10 years ago, just stopped working. Unboxing this toaster was easy and the packaging was adequate to protect it well. I have always been a big fan of stainless-steel appliances and this matches my kitchen décor nicely.
I have now had the opportunity to use this toaster on various types of breads, bagels and English muffins and had to try different settings based on the bread. Lighter breads toasted nicely and evenly on setting 4 but denser breads (pumpernickel and sourdough) did better on 5. I tried sourdough on 6 and it burned it pretty quickly so this toaster has some power and heat when needed. Toasting from frozen was as easy as pressing the button on the toaster and while of course it took a bit longer, it was still a nice even toasting. Overall I am satisfied with the evenness of the toasting.
Just two very minor “cons”. First, I prefer the crumb tray to be in front or side (not rear as this one is) for ease of use. Just a personal preference. Second, stainless steel has a tendency to attract hard to remove fingerprint stains due to the oil on our skin. Easy to counteract this by waxing the case with standard car wax periodically – I did this prior to using this toaster and it worked beautifully.
All in all – love this toaster.

Beautiful cover, bad book + loud fan
By Levi
This laptop definitely gives a great first impression. The watchband hinge is unique looking and reduces the wobble that plagues most 2-in-1 computers. The glass panel is elegant. The touchpad is apple quality.
However, one should not always judge a book by its cover. After using the laptop for a week, I noticed that the high-pitch fan kicks up at random times. It is also not a comfortable, low pitch hum that occasionally turns on like on my old macbook air which I considered in the past to be very noisy. It's more a like a high pitch kettle sound that's constantly on and throttles violently at times. Perhaps, if you're elderly or partially deaf, this will not bother you. Even the BIOS driver released in December 2016 did not help in my case. Actually, the fan ran 80% before the driver. Now, it runs literally 100% of the time. And FYI, I use the laptop mostly to watch youtube, take notes for class, and watch netflix.
When I was looking at the display model in the store, I asked the salesperson whether or not the laptop had an aggressively loud fan like some comments online had mentioned. He told me that the computer is silent because of the SSD which is a complete lie. Do not be fooled by claims that this laptop runs quietly. The only time this computer is silent is when it is turned off or in standby. I read in another review that the fan is only noisy for the first week of use because of some file management process that is beyond my understanding. But, I can assure you that the fan is still noisy after 1 week of use.
I expected loud fan noise during intensive processes like making a movie. But, I hear the fan screaming even when I only have one browser window open and gmail. It can get pretty annoying in quiet places, so I no longer can work in quiet libraries. Sadly, this supposedly flagship computer is best used at home or in private/ noisy places where sound isn't an issue. And even when watching netflix, I have always opted to use headphones because no one likes to watch tv/movies with constant whistling in the background.
Another concern is the durability of the glass cover. I am very sad that my beautiful glass cover looks like a limited edition "spider web" now after just 1 week. I placed it on a stand to elevate the keyboard to a comfortable typing position. The stand tipped over backwards and the laptop pivoted off 4 inches. That was enough to shatter the entire back lid. Now I know why 99% of laptops don't use glass as the lid cover... So if you own or are considering this laptop, I would invest in the bestbuy protection plan or a screen protector because this glass lid is beautiful but not practical at all. And because the laptop is limited edition, Lenovo quoted an $800 price for the replacement part after 2 hours on hold... for that price I can buy a whole other laptop with multiple thunderbolt usb C, hdmi output, normal sized right shift key, active stylus compatibility.
If I could do it again, I might give the full HD standard aluminum version a chance. I really wanted a unique laptop, and unfortunately it didn't work out well for me. Sometimes it is better to be practical. I would go for a metal laptop with certain features that this laptop lacked: latest thunderbolt capable usb C, >6 hr of real world use, hdmi or mini display port of some sort, SD card reader, and larger right shift key.

I have found this computer to be just about perfect, especially after my updates to BIOS and all other drivers. Runs super quiet and fan kicks in quietly once every hour or so and when does, it is certainly not loud. See my review for what I did after purchase...it makes ALL the difference to the performance!

I wanted to know your recommendations for the speaker wire ? others have mentioned 14/4 CL3 or 14/1 CL. I just want to know what is best for this system and amp.

14/4, direct burial wire would be perfect
