Awesome, accurate, but could be better
on February 28, 2022
Posted by: Snarltoof

I have a huge photo collection. I've saved pictures from when I was a kid, and I recently got more boxes of photos from family members. I've been tasked with archiving these thousands of pictures, so I was really excited to get this scanner, hoping it would make my job easier.
Over the years I've had six other sheet-feed scanners. Only one of them did a decent job at scanning pictures, but it's nowhere near as accurate as this Canon scanner.

Scanning quality --
By "accuracy," I mean how close the scanned image is compared to the printed picture.
1. Proportions -- most of my other scanners tend to stretch and/or shrink the image vertically in some areas. This Canon scanner tracks much better than others, and the images haven't got vertical distortion like that.
2. Colors -- the Canon scanner is really good at picking up the correct colors in the picture.
3. Sharpness and detail -- Incredibly detailed. The scanner picks up things in pictures that you just can't see with your eyes. For example -- some of my pictures show perfectly straight vertical lines 1 pixel wide. I carefully cleaned the scan surfaces and these lines didn't go away. It turns out that these pictures were scratched, probably during processing, but you can't see these scratches looking at the picture. The detail is so sharp on this scanner that you can tell the difference between a film-developed photo and a high-res digital print.
After scanning and reviewing a few hundred photos, I found that this scanner does a great job of archiving photographs. I feel confident enough to dispose of most of the prints after scanning them because of the scanner's accuracy.
I also use sheet-feed scanners to archive documents. This scanner does an amazing job with text, even at higher speed. Clear and sharp text means that OCR is way more efficient.
So -- this scanner is awesome, but I wish it had a couple more features.
If you call it a "photo scanner," it really needs the ability to scan negatives and slides. This one just does not have that capability at all.
Also, it can only be used when it's plugged into a computer. It has no network connectivity and has no way to attach storage devices for direct scanning, so I can't just stand in front of it and use it as a stand-alone. That would be a huge benefit when archiving hundreds or thousands of photographs.
Overall, I recommend this for most people. You'll get a very accurate sheet-feed scanner.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Espresso is awesome, but controls are basic
on January 27, 2022
Posted by: Snarltoof
from Minneapolis, MN
I like this machine. It makes great espresso drinks. It is oh so close to replacing all the other coffee makers on my counter! So -- the 5 stars is for how easy and awesome it makes espresso drinks, just like it's supposed to. It's just so close to being even more awesome.
What I like:
Great packaging. When you open the box, they even placed a loose wrapping "strap" around it so you can pull it out of the box by the strap! That was so thoughtful.
Easy setup. It's pretty much ready to go out of the box.
My travel mugs fit under it when you remove the drip tray! Just remember to return the drip tray when you're done!
It makes great espresso drinks and it's super easy to use.
The drinks come out hot! The instructions and app indicate that you can adjust the brew temperature, but I can't see any way to do that.
It grinds whole beans for you, and you can adjust how fine or coarse the grind is.
The milk steamer is very convenient, and it does a great job dispensing steam or hot water.
It has an elegant minimalist design.
What I don't like:
The first rinse cycle! Maybe you could have given me some warning that it would spew hot water all over my hands and counter when I got it all together and turned it on for the first time!
Extra-credit -- make the drip tray more obvious. I was so excited to set up my machine that I didn't notice the drip tray. That made my first surprise shower even worse. Maybe make an "insert drip tray" indicator?
Very limited options. You only get 3 coffee "buttons" on the machine -- espresso, Americano (half espresso, half water), or "My Brew." The "My Brew" button is programmed in the app, but you can only choose one of the existing drinks, and you have very little customization available. You can adjust the grind time and brew volume, but nothing else. I haven't seen anywhere to adjust the water temperature.
Things it needs to improve:
There's no automation! It shows up in the SmartHQ app, but it does not show up in Google Home, so I can't turn it on or start a cup remotely. (My other GE Profile appliance does show up in Google Home, so I'm sure it has the capability.)
The app needs work. It doesn't do all the stuff it says it does -- temperature for example.
My wish list:
This is an espresso machine, so these aren't problems with the machine, but if the machine did these things, it would knock both the other coffee makers out of my kitchen.
I wish it made coffee!! I "hacked" it to make me a nice cup of coffee by choosing the "Red Eye" for the "My Brew" button, then maximizing the volume by holding the button down until it beeps then letting go. It'll dispense the maximum volume and stop by itself.
I wish the water reservoir were larger, but that's my problem. I can only brew 2 cups of my hacked coffee, but I'm sure it can brew a whole bunch of espresso drinks.
Do you want awesome espresso drinks at home? Get this machine. You'll be super happy with it.

Use your gaming laptop as a desktop
on December 30, 2021
Posted by: Snarltoof
from Minneapolis, MN
I have a couple of high-end laptops, so I retired my desktop systems some time ago. I use these laptops for gaming and general computer use, so I can take them with me, use them while sitting on the couch watching TV, or docked at my desk.
My desk setup includes an awesome RGB keyboard, mouse, and headset, plus a gorgeous FHD monitor.
One of my laptops is a high-end 2 in 1 with an i7 processor and optane storage, so it's a power house with thunderbolt 4, but no gaming video. This dock squeezes the best video performance out of it. It's awesome to be able to just shut the lid and plug it in using one USB-C cord, and it seamlessly transitions the video and controls. My laptop immediately detected the dock as thunderbolt 4, so I didn't have to do anything to install drivers or anything. Razer drivers did pop up and gave me the option to install, so I can use it to control the RGB effects, but this laptop isn't for gaming, and this dock doesn't change that.
My gaming laptop on the other hand is a powerhouse with a Ryzen 9 processor and RTX 3060 video but it does not have Thunderbolt, so I'm sure I'm missing some functionality or performance there. It still works great as a USB-C dock, but I'm not sure whether display link through USB or plugging directly into my monitor from the laptop's HDMI port works better, but the USB-C cord does keep the laptop charged. Important note -- I've found that my laptop does not charge through USB when the battery is too low, so don't expect USB-C to bring back a totally dead battery. That might be different with the Thunderbolt laptop, since it only charges through USB-C.
Another important note -- this dock does not have video jacks, so unless your monitor has a USB-C input (which isn't very common when I wrote this), you'll need to get an adapter cable. I understand that the USB-C standard includes Display Port and HDMI outputs, so I just use adapter cables and I'm all good.

Strong cam system easy setup
on December 14, 2021
Posted by: Snarltoof
from Minneapolis, MN
I enjoy tech. I already wired my house for ethernet, so I had quite a head-start on this one, and I'll give you a whole bunch of feedback on its connectivity.
It comes with four super long (60 foot!) cables, which would make installation convenient, but beware! Those are not ethernet cables, so don't expect to use them for your other network devices! There's only four wires in those cables. However, you can use normal ethernet cables just fine. Another cool networking feature -- the NVR can find cameras that are connected through your network and not directly into the NVR. Although -- the box has 8 POE ports on it, so I'd connect the cameras directly.
Like my other experience with Swann systems, the app works very well, it allows you to toggle between different NVRs, and the video playback comes up pretty quickly.
On the other hand, the web app isn't awesome. It works great, but only works in older browsers. I have to use Internet Explorer to be able to access it from my computer.
Setup was pretty easy, but I really wish I could use a physical keyboard on the console. That would make it much easier to use complex passwords. You have to enter the password using the mouse on a virtual keyboard. You also have to have a TV available to use it. I tried to connect to a computer monitor and it just won't resolve the picture.
Other than that -- it has lots of powerful configuration options, including alerts, identifying people and cars, and you can select the active monitoring areas within the image. You can also schedule the recording so you can reduce your disk usage by just keeping the times you want to see.

great deterrent, looks original
on December 7, 2021
Posted by: Snarltoof

So -- if you have your battery Nest Cam outside where people can get to it, there's always the risk that they'd just take it, since it's just held in place by a magnet. It makes it convenient for us to pull it down for charging, but also anyone who recognizes the device knows that they could just grab it. This cable adds a degree of deterrence. You see the security cable, you'll know removing it will take a lot more work. It won't stop someone who is determined to take it, but reduces your overall risk.
The shell fits nicely around the body of the camera. There's no physical features that positively position it, but once you get it lined up right it looks like it's always been a part of the camera.
There's usually a compromise between security and convenience, and that applies here. The camera's battery is not removable, so you have to plan how you're going to recharge it once you place the camera.
Overall, it's well-made, a good solution, and a great value.

Simple but functional and reliable
on November 20, 2021
Posted by: Snarltoof

This system tells you that anybody can have basic home security. It's super easy to set up, everything is wireless and cordless except the base station. I have my base station down in my basement and it connects to everything just fine.
The door sensors stick on with tape and are self-powered. I originally installed my system 3 1/2 years ago, and they are still working and never fell off. I even have one outside in my garden shed and it's been working with no problems.
The system's sensors have three states -- off, home, and away. You can configure what happens when each device is triggered, but your settings are limited to disabled, alert yourself, or alert dispatch if you subscribe to monitoring. That's it -- just 3 modes, and 3 choices for each device. You can set them to alarm immediately or with a delay.
You can also choose from a few different levels of monitoring, from unmonitored for free to a $25 plan that includes 24/7 dispatch.
Adding the cameras to my system was super easy, too, and the cameras work great. They alert me via the app with a popup on my phone whenever they detect motion, and I can open the app to see what it captured. You can't fine-tune the range or sensitivity of the cameras like you can with other systems, but the resolution is really good, even in the dark.
This is a great system for people who want solid protection but don't want to deal with complex setup and configuration.

Good performance but missing some key features
on October 21, 2021
Posted by: Snarltoof
from Minneapolis, MN
I have a Shark ION P50 vacuum, so I was looking forward to receiving this one to compare the two.
First of all, this is a really good vacuum. It's cordless and has just as much power as a plug-in machine. It's light weight and very well designed for versatility and maneuverability. You can use it as an upright or a cannister vacuum by lifting the body of the vacuum off of the handle part. The battery lasts long enough to get most of your vacuuming done. There's even a "fuel gauge" that tells you how much battery you have left. Somehow it has phenomenal vacuum power without sounding like a jet taking off, but it does have higher power settings that are louder.
I really like how easy it is to pull off parts to clear a clog or clean/change a filter.
However, I have a huge problem with tool storage. It has awesome features and power, but it still doesn't come with any way to store the attachments!! It's so portable and maneuverable, you'd think tool clips or something would be natural. But just like my ION from 3 years ago, there's no place to put the tools. The instructions say it comes with a storage bag, but it doesn't.
The battery pulls out for charging and comes with a charging base. My ION vacuum's battery is also removable and ALMOST identical. The Vertex battery fits in the ION, the ION battery fits in the Vertex charger, but the ION battery DOES NOT fit in the Vertex. Really guys? Why??
Battery inconsistency and tool storage cost this two stars from an otherwise 5-star review.
So -- this one is going to live in my RV. At least that's a smaller space so I wouldn't have to run up and down stairs looking for the attachments.

Straight-forward simple single-cup coffeemaker
on October 19, 2021
Posted by: Snarltoof
from Minneapolis, MN
This coffee maker has just the features I need. It does one job and it does it well! Actually, 2 jobs...
I do a lot of traveling, and this coffee maker now has a home in my RV.
Here's what's great about it:
It's single-serve. You dump water into it from your coffee cup and you'll have exactly the right amount.
Even so, the reservoir has steps in it that easily tell you how much water is in it.
The filter basket is re-usable.
It uses coffee grounds, not kups or pods or anything, so you can get coffee for it anywhere. There's no compatibility problems.
It makes the water really hot!
It brews pretty quickly! Although, its indicator light goes out before it's completely finished, so you have to wait a couple of moments after it says it's done.
It comes with a scoop, and storage for it.
There's just two buttons! One for hot coffee, one for cold coffee.
It comes with an insulated cup for iced coffee! It's a nice cup that I also use for water and soft drinks.
It makes iced coffee!
Bonus -- you can use iced-coffee mode without ice for a super strong hot cup of coffee.
I really like this machine. For my purposes they got it right.

A new experience for your head
on October 19, 2021
Posted by: Snarltoof
from Minneapolis, MN
I didn't think much of the technology of pillows until I had the opportunity to use this one. I was surprised to see how much these things cost, but this pillow is worth it and I'm going to buy another one.
Normally when I shop for pillows, I give them a good squish test to get a feel for the loft, support, springiness, and softness, and I do my best to guess how it would feel to use it all night. I pick the best one and take it home and I'm usually disappointed. The stuffing looses its ability to spring back into shape, or the springiness turns into firmness that tweaks my neck at a bad angle, or any number of other issues, so I usually sleep with a firm flat pillow and a big fluffy king-size pillow, and I'm usually able to mush them into the shape I want.
This pillow was nothing like that. The first thing that impressed me is the weight. It just feels substantial. Then the firmness -- it isn't just soft. It's compliant. It cushions my head very nicely, but it keeps its shape. I don't have to mash it into a shape I want. It absorbs my head just until I'm comfy, then it springs back into its full shape when I get up.
One weird thing is that the cover material seems kind of slick, and it wriggles itself out of pillow cases overnight. I'm going to try using a king-size pillow case for it, or something that zips shut.
On the other hand, when it doesn't have a pillow case on it, it feels really breathable. I'm a hot sleeper, and I often get a ring of sweat around my neck, so I usually wake up in the middle of the night to flip my pillow. This one keeps me from sweating. The cooling effect is a bit better when it doesn't have a pillow case on it.
So far, this is my favorite pillow ever. It's a luxury item that will hold its value by giving me more comfy sleep.

Get this if you have Google Home
on October 15, 2021
Posted by: Snarltoof
from Minneapolis, MN
I've used several different kinds of security cameras, but if I had to start over, I'd use these. Integration into the Home app is flawless, so you don't have to install any other app. You only have to go one place to see what's going on.
Alerts are very configurable. I used this as a "littercam" for a while, aimed at one of my cats' litter boxes to keep track of which cat is using which box, and I set the camera to only alert on animals.
Picture quality is very good, even in the dark. The resolution is pretty high so you can really zoom in to see details.
I used it with the charging stand, so I can't comment on the battery life, but the camera is really durable. I've dropped it on our cement basement floor a few times and it didn't seem to affect the camera at all.
It's very clever how it only records when there's alerts, and no full-time, so that saves a ton of storage space, so this isn't as powerful as an NVR type of system, but it has all the features you'd really want.

They got it right!
By Snarltoof from Minneapolis, MN
I've been using tablets for years, including my first Galaxy Tab 7" tablet, a variety of Acer and Asus tablets, a Surface, and Surface Book. I've also been a fan of the Samsung Galaxy phones, having a 3, 4, and a 5.
When I first got this S3 tablet, I was expecting to get decent tablet performance. What I got was a powerhouse in an elegant, extremely light weight package. The size is great -- it's way more portable than my Surface devices, and the type cover gives it a good amount of protection.
Great job on the type cover, guys! The magnet attachment and the tilted viewing angle are great. It would be awesome if the type cover had a hole for the rear camera. A couple of other minor keyboard quirks; the tablet only accepts the keyboard if the tablet is unlocked when you attach it. I was also hoping for an android button on the type cover but couldn't find it at first. I read the instructions (under settings/physical keyboard/keyboard shortcuts) and it shows a "super" button that supports all the commands I'd want to use for an Android keyboard. After hunting around, I figured out that the "search" button on the keyboard, with the magnifying glass icon, is this "super" button. Now my hands don't need to leave the keyboard. The keys are a fairly natural size, not too cramped for my very large hands, They didn't bother making a touchpad on the keyboard like you see on some other compact keyboards. Good move!
I'm going to experiment with USB C video adapters to see how it performs as a "desktop" replacement, but I'm really optimistic given how it performs normally. I have a USB C to USB 3 adapter, and it picks up my keyboard and mouse just fine, even through a KVM.
I've been using a Google Pixel phone for a while, so I lost practice with how Samsung does stuff, so it's a bit different to navigate. Not too bad, and this thing does way more and has way more features than I've explored so far.
It connected to my Wi-Fi network easily, has great web page load times, installs apps quickly, and Zen Pinball is super responsive on this.
It feels really light, so it is very easy to hold. It does great as a Kindle reader, although the screen is a bit shiny. They keyboard/case pops off easily but holds securely when it's attached either as a case or as a keyboard.
I was really excited to try it out, so I used it for two days before charging it. I let it run down to 15%, and it was still happily playing pinball. It supports quick charging, so it was back up to 40% in about 15 minutes.
It's pricey, but you get what you pay for. It's an awesome tablet.

I've been using this tablet for a month now. Still five stars. The performance is fantastic, the battery capacity is awesome, the tablet is lightweight and easy to handle, and the keyboard case pops on and off really conveniently. It is awesome that it comes with the pen.
If Samsung is out there reading this -- you gotta come up with a dock or keyboard/mouse/video/Ethernet adapter for it! This thing is a powerhouse, and if I could use it with a fullsize keyboard and monitor it would be a viable laptop replacement. I've been scouring the internet and I can't find anything that displays video while providing power to the tablet.

Do you experience dropped calls, slow internet speeds, or the inability to send and receive texts while you’re on the road or enjoying some time off the beaten path? With the weBoost Drive Reach RV, you can improve your cell signal, wherever your adventures take you. Designed to enhance signal coverage for RVs, campers and trailers, especially in remote areas. The weBoost Drive Reach RV Cellular Signal Booster uses the latest technology to pick up an existing cell signal, route it the booster, then broadcast that amplified signal into your RV. To install the Drive Reach RV, first select where to mount the outside antenna using the provided ladder bracket. This is the most important step as it impacts the overall performance of the booster. Check that the antenna is at least 12 inches from all other antennas and openings to avoid interference. Use the modular mast extensions to ensure the antenna is above any obstructions. Once the outside antenna is installed, run the coax cable behind the weather stripping of an opening, like a door, window, or pop out slide, into your RV. Next, place the inside antenna on a table or countertop near where you plan to use your devices the most. Then run the coax cables to the booster. Plugin both the outside and inside cables. Now, plug in the power cord to the booster. Finally, plug the power cord into your vehicle’s power supply and turn on the booster. When the green light is on, it’s working. All coax cable needed for installation is provided. Stay connected, wherever you choose to explore, with the weBoost Drive Reach RV Cellular Signal Booster!

The power requirements says “plug in”. Plug into what? Does this plug into 120v AC which would require shore power or an inverter or does it plug into 12v DC in an RV? If I t’s 12V what kind of plug?

It comes with an AC power adapter, so you need shore power, inverter, or generator. I bought the 12V adapter for it, which plugs into a lighter socket.

Yes and yes. You can use it as a hotspot. At least I can on my Verizon account. It can be used for IMS calling and for SIP calling.

What is the maximum output through the USB cable. Example if I use a hub can I get 1gb Ethernet and two 4k screens @ 60hz plus a keyboard, mouse, and USB 3.0 at regular speeds? Also is there going to be a Samsung DeX or Chromebook OS from MS?

Ethernet, keyboard, and mouse work through the USB C cable, but video does not, so you won't get anything on your monitors.

Is data transferred or synched from my PC to the Duo via the YourPhone app on my PC? If not, how?

It's compatible with cloud syncing on Google Drive, gmail, hotmail, and OneDrive, so you get your data, pics, contacts, calendars, etc. It's also compatible with the YourPhone app so you can resume your browsing session and use text messaging on your PC.

Does the phone give you the option to turn off a display when not in use to conserve battery?

When you have it open like a book, both displays are on. When you have it folded shut, both displays are off. When you have it folded in the open position with both screens on the outside, only one screen stays on. You double-tap to switch screens, but it also seems to respond to how I rotate my wrist. There's only one camera so you have to rotate it between selfie and normal modes.

Password protection isn't enough anymore.Engineered with multi-layered security, Norton Core™ intelligently protects your Wi-Fi network and an unlimited number of connected IoT devices such as smart TVs, baby monitors, Wi-Fi thermostats as well as your personal devices like laptops, desktops, smartphones and tablets against malware, spyware, ransomware, viruses and more.

Do I need a smart phone to be able to use Norton Core?

I'm pretty sure you do; you need the app to set it up and control it. I'm not sure if there's a web interface, but I don't think there is.
