Good for working from home, software needs work
on January 30, 2021
Posted by: Snarltoof
from Minneapolis, MN
I'm lucky that I can work from home, but this involves many video conferences. The mic and camera built into my laptop just weren't good enough quality. This webcam just plugged into my laptop and it worked with no additional configuration needed, and I didn't have to install any drivers for it to work with Teams and Zoom.
The picture is pretty good. It has a great depth of field, so I have to be really mindful of what's going on behind me! The microphone is really really good. People can hear me clearly and they tell me I sound pretty natural, and it doesn't pick up too much of my background noise.
This is a great upgrade from your laptop's camera and mic if you're using it for remote conferencing.
I then plugged it into my personal computer to take a look at some of the other features. There's lots of reviews out there to talk about how awesome those features are, but there were two major drawbacks for me -- first, Windows didn't trust the firmware installer, so I didn't run it. If there were at least an MD5 hash I might have attempted it, but these days you really shouldn't trust anything without certificates or other verification.
Also, the features software has a scaling problem with my system. It works, but the text on some of the controls is oversized and doesn't fit on the buttons. That makes me trust the software and the firmware updater even less.
So -- out of the box, it's great at what it's supposed to do, but I didn't have any success trying the firmware update or advanced features.

Nice quality appliance

This air purifier is an expensive machine, but it noticeably does its job. I keep it near a litter box. I do clean that box daily, so I'm not asking the machine to mask a week's worth of odor, but it does make a difference in the air quality. I can also see how much litter dust gets kicked up into the air when the cats use it or when I clean it, so I know it's working! It has auto features -- it's usually pretty quiet, but when the air is really dirty it does kick into high gear and you can hear it a bit.
The only issues I have with it is -- I'm disappointed that it doen't have more smart home integration. It can integrate with Alexa, and that's it. I really wish it integrated with Google Home, and I'm sure that others would want to be able to control it through Apple. Second -- the instructions and documentation are fairly vague, especially when it comes to interpreting the display. It allows you to scroll through several different values, including how much per particle size, air temp, and humidity, but I had to search around the internet to understand what it was trying to tell me. There's also an LED bar across the top/front that kinda reminds me of an RGB version of the Knight Rider car, but I'm not sure what it's trying to tell me. Sometimes it's solid green across the front, other times it splits different colors, and I couldn't find anything to tell me what it means.
However, since it is such a powerful and effective air purifier, I can't really cost it a point for those issues.

Good, but what's it for?
on December 24, 2020
Posted by: Snarltoof
from Minneapolis, MN
I regularly go to outdoors camping events, and I like to set up a "theater" tent where I can show movies for my friends, so I jumped on this when I first saw it. The description said "enjoy an epic experience virtually anywhere…" and "this all-in-one projector is the perfect way to watch all your favorite streaming services." So I thought this would be perfect.
First, the good stuff. It's a nice compact form factor, and it looks fairly rugged, so I could toss it on my A/V bag and go. No pesky protrusions, and the power adapter is about the size of a deck of cards. The picture is really nice and colorful, and it seems to be a pretty wide angle lens, so you can project a large screen in a small space. It isn't terribly bright, but it's acceptable for PowerPoint presentations with dim lighting indoors, or movies in a darkened room.
It's got a headphone jack for stereo sound output. I can work with that, but bluetooth would have been a nice touch.
As for features, I was disappointed by the overall product design. There were quite a few drawbacks for my purposes, but I have a hard time lowering my rating for it because of its quality and performance. However, in the spirit of Festivus, here's my grievances:
The connectivity!! It has the option of HDMI, wireless, or USB. The wireless is Miracast screen mirroring, which is super disappointing. If I want to stream something from my phone, it will mirror the entire phone screen including the time and stuff that's across the top. I'm using a Surface Duo for a phone, so that makes full-screen even that more problematic. It would have been way better if you could connect to it as an external monitor or use native casting from the phone. This really limits its capabilities as a portable device. The USB connection is for file browsing only as far as I can tell.
I was able to use it with Chromecast just fine, and the USB port can be used to power the Chromecast, so there's that. Now I have to go out and buy a Chromecast or some other streaming device for it.
I'd expect more power options like a battery or an internal power regulator so you can use whatever power is available. It needs 24v, so I'm pretty hesitant to hook it up to two car batteries in series.
Why isn't there a lens cover? The lens is very nicely inset into an alcove, and I really expected to see an integrated lens cover that would slide over and cover it.
Why is it manual focus only? There's a focus slider on the top. I'd expect it to have auto-focus capability, and a zoom slider on the top instead.
For mounting, it has three m4-0.7 mounting holes so it is ready for a projector mount; there's one behind the front foot and you have to unscrew the rear feet bumpers to get to the rest of the holes. Since it's so portable and light, I'd love to see a 1/4"x20 mount for a tripod or a GoPro mount.
The functionality! It's totally dependent on the remote control, and the remote isn't illuminated so you can't see what you're doing in the dark.
Overall, it's a nice, quality build and gives good performance. I saw a recommended use for it was "ultra-portable home theater," and I'd agree with it, but those seem like two different use case. It seems like the intent is that you could port it from one home theater to another. I can't really see a reason for the portability if you just use it at home, but if it's supposed to be portable, it's missing a whole lot of features that it would need.

works great and versatile

I was eager to see how this would perform -- it combines a toaster oven, convection oven, and air fryer all in one device, so it saves a whole lot of valuable counter space. I've compromised with toaster ovens for years because they are more useful than bread slice toasters, but the ones I've tried weren't really awesome at toasting bread or bagels, but it's always been handy to have something other than a microwave to heat up left-overs or to cook treats.
First off, this toaster oven does indeed make great toast! The highest setting is actually too toasted for my wife, so I take that as a win. The toasting is quick, thorough, and hits both sides. Works great on bagels, too.
I've used it in convection mode for heating up leftovers. Important safety tip! It's way too hot in there for plastic dishes. Should be obvious, but I learned quickly! (Good thing I was watching just in case). Leftovers get heated up nicely, not soggy, and as you get used to it, you get a feel for temperature and timing.
Air frying is the big bonus here. It's very different from my old air fryer, and it works way better. It cooks in 1/3 the time of my other one. So far I've tried it on potatoes and bacon, and I made quesadillas, and it's worked very well. It's also easy to clean with broad flat surfaces inside.
One minor annoyance -- why in the world does it come with a not non-stick cooking tray? The first time I used the cooking tray, I had to scrub off a sticky mess. I'm going to keep my eyes open for a non-stick tray to fit.
So -- other than the cooking tray, this oven is awesome.

Good value mouse, great in a set

This is a quick and responsive mouse with a normal amount of buttons. It's comfortable and useful enough to use all day as a primary mouse on a work system. The Swarm software opens up all sorts of configuration and lighting options. I also have a Roccat keyboard and headset, so this mouse completes the "set." It's nice to be able to synch up their lighting effects.
More about the usability -- the scroll wheel can be configured for sensitivity, it has side-to-side tilt for side scrolling, and the mechanism is nicely solid. I don't accidentally click the middle button when trying to scroll. The only thing that bugged me about the buttons was the left side button under your thumb, but they use it effectively. I do hit that button accidentally pretty often, but they have it set as a "function" button, so it doesn't do anything by itself, so once you get used to it, it's great.
Overall it's a great mouse, and it's nice to have a set of peripherals that can synch their lighting effects.

Works great but notifications
on November 3, 2020
Posted by: Snarltoof
from Minneapolis, MN
The camera works great. It detects and follows movement, the floodlights come on, and the image quality is really good no matter what time of day or night. I have it near my back door, and it illuminates the backyard nicely for smoke breaks and quick trips to the garage. Since it's wireless and cordless, I could put it just about anywhere.
The movement following can be kind-of entertaining -- when it records us sitting on the back porch, the camera image can swing all over the place, zoom in and out, but it's a fun feature. I suppose I'd disable that for more professional use.
It does reliably detect humans and animals vs random movement.
There's a few things I don't like about it.
I wish the notifications were more configurable, like a threshold or configurable window. If I'm out there moving around, it will send me a notification that it detects movement every 30 seconds or so. I really wish there were a way to have it alert just once for a set period of time. Also, I set the floodlight to stay on for 5 minutes, but it shuts off after about a minute and then back on when it detects any movement.
Also, there's no onboard memory. It's a cloud-based service. They start you off with a premium account, but I'm not sure how much it's going to retain when I revert to the standard account. I'd really recommend using it with the arlo base station so that you can store your own recordings.

Great keyboard
on October 29, 2020
Posted by: Snarltoof
from Minneapolis, MN
I like it. I love the responsive mechanical keys, and I can type really fast on them. They're not quite as loud as the cherry red keys on my other gaming keyboards, and they're a little squishier and I think the key travel is a little less, so it's a bit of a quicker response for me.
The keyboard layout and spacing are pretty normal so it's very well suited to everyday use as well as gaming.
There's a knob that toggles between sound volume and keyboard brightness, so that's handy, and it has a mute button, which is great for conferencing and stuff.
The keyboard has feet along the back edge so you can angle it up or flat. I've gotten really used to my other keyboard that had feet along the front edge so you could angle it back, so I wish this keyboard were more adjustable. The wrist rest is okay, but not adjustable. I like the magnet attachment, it makes it really handy for moving around.
The keyboard looks gorgeous. There's an elegant brushed metal face and there's some amount of weight to it so it feels really steady. The way the key caps are minimized gives it a cool look that seems like the keys are floating above a field of light. It's also really easy to clean dust and crud out of there.
The Swarm software is where this really shines. You get an amazing amount of customization in colors and key mapping, and it remembers profiles. There's lots and lots of other settings. You get to choose between some keyboard sounds. You can make it sound like a typewriter, and there's a couple of arcade sounds if you really want to add some crazy feel to your games. I just leave the sound off though. The mechanics give it plenty of sound already. Another thing that's really cool is you can fine-tune the responsiveness by setting the key repeat rate. I haven't experimented with it yet, but I'm sure it could help cut down on typing errors for really fast typers.
This is a quality keyboard at a really good price.

Comfortable and great for comms
on October 27, 2020

I got this for gaming along with a Roccat keyboard and mouse, and it's awesome that their lighting effects can be synchronized. I really can't see the headset while I'm wearing it, but I'm sure I look cool!
So I got this for gaming, to be immersed in the world of my games, and it does great for that. The sound is rich and clear, I enjoy the sounds and music of my games, I can locate footsteps and things creeping up on me from behind.
The self-adjusting band is comfortable to wear all day. I'm working from home these days, and this headset is great for conferencing.
The thing I like the most about it is there's a volume dial for the mic, so I can adjust how much I can hear myself talking. That's a game-changer for conference calls.
The cord is plenty long, feels durable, and doesn't tangle.
So this is good for play and for work.

Works great, but missing a lot of features
on October 22, 2020
Posted by: Snarltoof
from Minneapolis, MN
Functionally this is a very good piece of equipment. I find myself working remotely full-time, and we use web conferencing, and once I started using this headset, most problems just went away. I'm not adding static, feedback, or other bad sound issues. It must be optimized for voice communications because I can hear voices and follow conversations very well, even when people are speaking at the same time. My voice comes across loud and clear but not overpowering so I can easily join into conversations. The headset is also really comfortable. I can wear it all day and hardly notice it's on. So, for use in teleconferencing, this is a great headset.
If you are just looking for a comms headset to connect to your computer OR your phone, stop right here and get this one. If you are expecting more usefulness, read the rest of this to know what you're getting yourself into.
For me, the drawbacks are pretty significant and cost my review one star.
First -- the instructions aren't great. There's a thick users' guide, but it's only thick because it's in 13 different languages. The instructions only take up 6 pages and only include the basics. The instructions don't even tell you how to put it on your head, so I had to look at the one picture on the box to try to figure it out. Maybe it's obvious to some people, but just wearing it confused me at first. Also it isn't reversible. The mic is on the left side and the buttons are on the right side and that's that.
The instructions do include an awesome card that go into detail on how to pair the headset. Whoever made that card should have also made a quick reference card for the button functions. There's a + and a - button, plus a multifunction button. The buttons are very easy to find with your fingers, but there's all sorts of combinations, 2 second presses, 3 second presses, tap 2 buttons, hold 2 buttons, etc, that would be very handy to have on a card. I might even make a copy of the instruction pages or type out a table in word for these features for quick reference rather than carry around the 80-page, 13-language user guide.
It comes with a lovely custom-sculpted carrying case. But why?? If I'm travelling with it, I'm not going to devote the space equal to a thick grill-cheese sandwich. It's one piece and easy to feel-for, so I'd just stuff it on a pocket in my computer bag. The case also has a really nice pocket for the charging cable. The special charging cable. Why not go with micro-USB, USB-C or wireless? Where am I gonna find another cord for it if I'm on the road? I think that they should have gone with some other setup entirely, like either a charging case or a charging desk stand plus a travel cord.
So -- I recommend this only if you're using it for communication and don't expect to travel with it.

Great fit, solid sound, great value
on October 6, 2020
Posted by: Snarltoof

I enjoy mobile tech, so I have several different earbuds from different manufacturers including some really high-end ones.
These are very satisfying, and I think they're a great value for their price, especially when comparing them to sets in the hundreds of dollars.
They are comfortable and feel secure. I think they got the geometry right; this hooks around my ear and the earbud rests right in my ear, and it stays put no matter how I shake my head and hop around. The key for using these, or any earbuds for that matter, is to test fit the different inserts. You gotta get the right fit that seals off your ear but won't pop out. JLab has a unique insert that's that spongy foam material, so it squishes down to fit then slowly expands to fit your ear, like earplugs. I like these the best and actually prefer them on other kinds of earbuds, too.
With the right inserts, these sound nice, clean, and thumpy. The noise reduction is dramatically effective. It has 3 settings, on, off, or active. I'm not exactly sure what's the difference between on and active, but they both do a great job keeping out the noise. Unfortunately, they're so good that when I walk my dog, I have to turn off noise reduction so I can hear cars on the road.
The controls are good, it's just that there's enough variation between the different kinds of earbuds I have that I keep having to refer to the cheat sheet. At least it's included!
I feel pretty comfortable with using these in all weather conditions, since they can get wet and not get ruined, but don't wear them swimming or in the shower!! Water plays havoc with the controls. It's fine if they're splashed, it's not fine if they're submerged or have water running on them.
The charging case is really handy. I haven't tried wireless charging yet, but the built-in reversible USB connector is very useful.
One thing I don't like is that the charging case is solid black. That means I lose it easily. I still haven't been able to find my old JLab earphones.
My desk is black, and I also lose it in my bag, drawers, etc. I marked it up with a silver marker to make it easier to locate. Isn't there some bluetooth functionality that can be used to locate them?
Anyway -- highly recommended, especially for the price.

They got it right!
By Snarltoof from Minneapolis, MN
I've been using tablets for years, including my first Galaxy Tab 7" tablet, a variety of Acer and Asus tablets, a Surface, and Surface Book. I've also been a fan of the Samsung Galaxy phones, having a 3, 4, and a 5.
When I first got this S3 tablet, I was expecting to get decent tablet performance. What I got was a powerhouse in an elegant, extremely light weight package. The size is great -- it's way more portable than my Surface devices, and the type cover gives it a good amount of protection.
Great job on the type cover, guys! The magnet attachment and the tilted viewing angle are great. It would be awesome if the type cover had a hole for the rear camera. A couple of other minor keyboard quirks; the tablet only accepts the keyboard if the tablet is unlocked when you attach it. I was also hoping for an android button on the type cover but couldn't find it at first. I read the instructions (under settings/physical keyboard/keyboard shortcuts) and it shows a "super" button that supports all the commands I'd want to use for an Android keyboard. After hunting around, I figured out that the "search" button on the keyboard, with the magnifying glass icon, is this "super" button. Now my hands don't need to leave the keyboard. The keys are a fairly natural size, not too cramped for my very large hands, They didn't bother making a touchpad on the keyboard like you see on some other compact keyboards. Good move!
I'm going to experiment with USB C video adapters to see how it performs as a "desktop" replacement, but I'm really optimistic given how it performs normally. I have a USB C to USB 3 adapter, and it picks up my keyboard and mouse just fine, even through a KVM.
I've been using a Google Pixel phone for a while, so I lost practice with how Samsung does stuff, so it's a bit different to navigate. Not too bad, and this thing does way more and has way more features than I've explored so far.
It connected to my Wi-Fi network easily, has great web page load times, installs apps quickly, and Zen Pinball is super responsive on this.
It feels really light, so it is very easy to hold. It does great as a Kindle reader, although the screen is a bit shiny. They keyboard/case pops off easily but holds securely when it's attached either as a case or as a keyboard.
I was really excited to try it out, so I used it for two days before charging it. I let it run down to 15%, and it was still happily playing pinball. It supports quick charging, so it was back up to 40% in about 15 minutes.
It's pricey, but you get what you pay for. It's an awesome tablet.

I've been using this tablet for a month now. Still five stars. The performance is fantastic, the battery capacity is awesome, the tablet is lightweight and easy to handle, and the keyboard case pops on and off really conveniently. It is awesome that it comes with the pen.
If Samsung is out there reading this -- you gotta come up with a dock or keyboard/mouse/video/Ethernet adapter for it! This thing is a powerhouse, and if I could use it with a fullsize keyboard and monitor it would be a viable laptop replacement. I've been scouring the internet and I can't find anything that displays video while providing power to the tablet.

Do you experience dropped calls, slow internet speeds, or the inability to send and receive texts while you’re on the road or enjoying some time off the beaten path? With the weBoost Drive Reach RV, you can improve your cell signal, wherever your adventures take you. Designed to enhance signal coverage for RVs, campers and trailers, especially in remote areas. The weBoost Drive Reach RV Cellular Signal Booster uses the latest technology to pick up an existing cell signal, route it the booster, then broadcast that amplified signal into your RV. To install the Drive Reach RV, first select where to mount the outside antenna using the provided ladder bracket. This is the most important step as it impacts the overall performance of the booster. Check that the antenna is at least 12 inches from all other antennas and openings to avoid interference. Use the modular mast extensions to ensure the antenna is above any obstructions. Once the outside antenna is installed, run the coax cable behind the weather stripping of an opening, like a door, window, or pop out slide, into your RV. Next, place the inside antenna on a table or countertop near where you plan to use your devices the most. Then run the coax cables to the booster. Plugin both the outside and inside cables. Now, plug in the power cord to the booster. Finally, plug the power cord into your vehicle’s power supply and turn on the booster. When the green light is on, it’s working. All coax cable needed for installation is provided. Stay connected, wherever you choose to explore, with the weBoost Drive Reach RV Cellular Signal Booster!

The power requirements says “plug in”. Plug into what? Does this plug into 120v AC which would require shore power or an inverter or does it plug into 12v DC in an RV? If I t’s 12V what kind of plug?

It comes with an AC power adapter, so you need shore power, inverter, or generator. I bought the 12V adapter for it, which plugs into a lighter socket.

Will the Surface Duo allow you to do Hotspot from the device? Is this capable of wifi calling?

Yes and yes. You can use it as a hotspot. At least I can on my Verizon account. It can be used for IMS calling and for SIP calling.

What is the maximum output through the USB cable. Example if I use a hub can I get 1gb Ethernet and two 4k screens @ 60hz plus a keyboard, mouse, and USB 3.0 at regular speeds? Also is there going to be a Samsung DeX or Chromebook OS from MS?

Ethernet, keyboard, and mouse work through the USB C cable, but video does not, so you won't get anything on your monitors.

Is data transferred or synched from my PC to the Duo via the YourPhone app on my PC? If not, how?

It's compatible with cloud syncing on Google Drive, gmail, hotmail, and OneDrive, so you get your data, pics, contacts, calendars, etc. It's also compatible with the YourPhone app so you can resume your browsing session and use text messaging on your PC.

Does the phone give you the option to turn off a display when not in use to conserve battery?

When you have it open like a book, both displays are on. When you have it folded shut, both displays are off. When you have it folded in the open position with both screens on the outside, only one screen stays on. You double-tap to switch screens, but it also seems to respond to how I rotate my wrist. There's only one camera so you have to rotate it between selfie and normal modes.

Do I need a smart phone to be able to use Norton Core?

I'm pretty sure you do; you need the app to set it up and control it. I'm not sure if there's a web interface, but I don't think there is.
