A lot different than other security cameras
on July 12, 2018

The camera came nicely packaged in a cylindrical tube, the top half being clear displaying the camera. After cutting a couple seals the top “clear” half comes off and inside you will find the camera, base, magnetic wall/ceiling mount, power adapter, USB Cable “nice and long”, mounting hardware for the mount and a quick start guide. The camera itself has a nice heavy duty feeling to it, it’s not a light piece of plastic by any means.
The first thing you’ll want to do is charge the camera, I used the enclosed charger and USB cable then let it charge till the front light turned green. You’ll also want to download and install the Guardzilla app for your Android or IOS device. Next, follow the instructions for turning on the camera and setting up an account through the Guardzilla app. It’s very simple to do and only took me a few minutes to get everything connected and running.
What’s very unique about this camera is it really does give you a full 360 degree view, when sitting upright and using their app you can move your phone around to look all around the area, straight up, all around and most of the way down to the floor. The app has a selector to pick how you have the camera mounted. We currently have it mounted on the wall above our front door and it gives an excellent 180 degree view side/side. My neighbor was pretty amazed how you could look around the image with this, “he’ll probably be picking one up very soon”. When setting up the camera you will want to go into the settings and play around with the motion detection sensitivity, brightness, alert types and other settings you may want for your individual preferences. There’s also a built in microphone and speaker that allows you to hear and talk back through the camera, it works pretty well and if the camera isn’t mounted too far away you can be heard fairly easily.
Setting the image quality on “high” in the app produces excellent video quality. I don’t know what the hit is on battery life but changing it down a little will probably help extend it. I’ve been heavily testing this unit and recording / viewing a lot more than I normally would so I’ll have to test out the battery life once I get into more real world use. At the moment it’s been a lot of fun being able to pan the phone around and look about the area so I’m pretty much eating up the battery really fast but still get 3 or so days out of it. If you plan on using this where there’s a lot of activity, “or just like messing around with it”, I would recommend using the adapter and cable to keep it powered up, the USB cable is around 10’ long so it’s plenty long to reach. The battery would act as a backup in case of a power outage “as long as your network has backup power”.
All the videos are stored in the cloud, and there’s no SD card slot or external onsite storage with this, it’s strictly cloud based. The cloud storage is plenty fast and playback wasn’t hindered on my end either using my home based Wi-Fi, cellular data, or the free public Wi-Fi at my car dealership while I was waiting for an oil change. The free 2 days of storage would probably be plenty for anyone wanting to use this as a monitoring device or short term security. I’d opt for one of the plans they offer for longer videos “30 seconds instead” and longer storage lengths “7 or 30 days” the cheapest plan if you purchase annually is $50 which isn’t bad at all, or $4.99 a month if you want to go that route. The company is also offering professional monitoring but I haven’t looked into this part of it as of yet.
This is a new device and somewhat newer technology in the security camera world so I’m going to give the company and developers the benefit of the doubt that they will be enhancing this even more with future updates. Their customer support has been quick to answer back and very helpful getting things figured out. This is a great addition to our security system and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Nice Qi Wireless Quick charger
on June 17, 2018
Posted by: SteveC
from Central Mississippi
I got this Belkin Boost UP wireless charger because my new Sony XZ2 supports Qi wireless fast charging.
I’ve been using wireless charging on and off since the Nexus 6, I’ve had many phones in between that and the XZ2 and always miss having the convenience of wireless charging when I get a phone without it.
The main advantage I see is there’s no need to plug in a charging cord, and thus reducing the wear and tear on the USB port. Wireless charging has never been very fast, but it works fine for me as I would put it on the charger overnight while sleeping or on my desk while working. I never had to worry about having a dead battery.
Now as for this Belkin Boost UP charger, it came with the charging pad, “mines in white”, instruction manual and a power adapter. The included power adapter is nice as I have quite a few wireless chargers and all of them want you to provide the power source, usually the adapter included with your phone. All the others also connect by a micro USB port or attached USB cable. This one uses a mini jack and not a USB port for attaching the included power adapter. The power adapter is a switching power adapter and provides 15 volts at 1.5 amps. The pad itself is thicker than the other chargers I have by quite a bit and feels very sturdy. There’s a rubber ring around the top of the pad to help keep the phone from slipping off and with the super slick back of the XZ2 if you aren’t using a case you won’t have to worry about the phone sliding off. There’s also a very small white led on the front side of the pad that glows when the pad is active, it’s not very bright so shouldn’t be a problem at night if using it by the bed while sleeping.
Here are some results I got from trying the charger at around a 63-65% charge, I use Ampere to measure the charging speed and current.
Belkin
63% battery 1180mA max with case and stayed around 1100-1150mA
64% battery 1180mA max without case and stayed around 1150-1170mA
Not much of a change with or without the case.
Cheap $18 wireless charger that I used a 1.5A phone charger with.
65% battery 570mA max with case and stayed around 560-570mA
65% battery 570mA max without case and stayed around 560-570mA
No change if the case were on or off.
Let the battery run down to 35% and put it on the charger, on the lock screen the little Qi symbol appeared and Ampere reports the same 1100mA range as before with the case on. After 12 minutes though the battery temp went up to 39C about 102F and the current dropped to 780ma, but it did manage to bring it from 35 to 46% in that amount of time. I don’t rely totally on wireless charging, especially when the battery drops really low and if it’s not close to the end of the day, but this is such a handy option to have just for the convenience of letting your phone charge while it’s sitting and not have to worry about messing with charging cables when answering a call.
So far this charger is working out really well, it quickly charges my XZ2, much faster than my other chargers and if your phone supports Qi Quick charge then this may be well worth considering.

Excellent Indoor Security Camera
on May 28, 2018
Posted by: SteveC
from Central Mississippi
I got the Kasa camera so we could keep an eye on our dog that stays indoors while we are out and about.
The first thing I noticed upon picking up the camera is the actual weight of it. Its frame, stand and arm are all made of metal, very heavy duty feeling and sturdy. The base has a magnet in it so you can attach it to any metal surface without adhesives, and there’s a rubber ring around the underside of the base to keep from scratching the surface it’s stuck to.
The first thing you do is install the app from the Android or IOS store, we use Android so any reference to the software will be for that. Starting up the App you will be prompted to sign in or set up an account. After entering you information you will receive a confirmation email and then you are ready to set up the camera. You can plug in your camera now and then go to the App, there you will set up your first device, and it will find the camera on the network, “make sure the camera LED is blinking an alternating amber/green color”. As soon as the app finds the camera you will need to enter your wireless account password. After a minute or so you will receive a message stating the camera is ready to use.
I found the app pretty easy to use but it needs quite a bit of refinement and not quite as good as some of the competitors out there, fortunately if TP Link has an opportunity to really make this a nice app.
You can set up scheduling so the camera turns on at scheduled times, you can also set up “Activity Zones” so only certain areas of the viewable area alerts and record motion. This is really nice as I can block out a zone around the ceiling where the ceiling fan would otherwise give off a bunch of false alerts. There are actually quite a few settings that you can adjust from the app, from resolution, night vision sensitivity even turn the status led on the front of the camera on/off.
When viewing the camera there’s a microphone button you can press/hold and can speak through the camera. It actually works pretty well and it’s a little louder than the other cameras I have that also have this feature. You can access the recorded videos by selecting the “Bell” icon, under that tab you will see the list of recorded videos, you can also download them if you wish to keep a clip longer than the plan you are on.
I set the video quality on 1080, and it’s very good, clear, well-lit and sharp. You can also do a finger pinch to zoom in / out of the image which also works very well. At night the IR lighting is bright enough to light up a standard sized bedroom easily.
It would be nice if there were a manual record button and a snapshot button, I actually use that feature often on our other system and hopefully this will be added in the future.
The free account gives two days of storage and 1gb of storage space, not much but it’s free and it’s plenty for us as we are not using this as our main security cameras. You can opt for different levels of the Kasa Care program, $40 gets you a year of 14 day storage and a 14gb limit. $70 a year comes with 30 days and 30gb but this is also for each camera, so if you have more than one camera you would have to multiply that by the number of cameras. I could see having one main camera with larger / longer storage and then have other cameras on the base plan, in all it’s not too bad of a setup.
This is a really nice camera to use indoors, and we’ll be keeping it as it works for what we want and the video quality is extremely good, hopefully they will make the app a little more user friendly.

Outstanding coffee maker
on May 8, 2018
Posted by: SteveC
from Central Mississippi
Arrived very well packaged cradled in a Styrofoam cage.
The lid of the water tank is taped down, and some of the extras were inside the tank. Included in the box are the stainless steel carafe, a gold mesh filter basket, cone basket “already mounted”, measuring scoop, water hardness test strip, and manual.
First off this unit looks great with the stainless steel body, silver colored bottom portion, and clear, easily view able water tank. The one thing both of us noticed is the carafe is actually pretty heavy and very solid, once full it’s really heavy. This is also a very large coffee maker so you’ll have to make some room on the counter and preferably not under a cabinet, it would fit under ours but left no room to fill the water tank.
On initial startup it asked to set water hardness. I didn’t use the included test strip as I already know what our water hardness is due to having aquariums, I also only will be using reverse osmosis water in this so I’m not too worried about hardness or scale build up. Then is does a system purge, fill the tank with water and let it run a cycle, then you are ready to go.
I decided to make a full carafe at first using the brewing basket, added the amount of coffee I wanted to use, filled the water tank, set the brew cycle to “Gold” and started the brew. This brewer is fast, 12 cups in just under 8 minutes and the temp in the carafe was 180F. There’s a count up timer showing time since last brewed. I brewed a full carafe at 5:30am, we had around 4 cups out of it and then I forgot about it till later that day, at around 6:00pm I remembered it still had coffee in it, “I’m use to using a single serve coffee maker so didn’t think about having extra coffee”, figured the coffee was cold by then because I never had a carafe that would keep coffee warm more than 4-5 hours so I checked the temperature. To my surprise the coffee inside was still at 135F after more than 12 hours of being in there. The outside of the carafe was cold to the touch so I figured the coffee would be cold inside also. This is really outstanding for a thermal carafe, and the coffee inside was still pretty good and drinkable. If a person were to run hot tap water inside the carafe before brewing the temp would probably stay higher longer if you wanted to keep coffee that long.
I also tried the single brew cycle by filling the tank with 14oz for my mug. Place the mug on the tray, put the coffee in the filter in the cone basket and ran it. It only took 3-4 minutes to brew and came out perfectly using the “Gold” setting. The brewing basket actually has 3 options, a “Cone” filter for making smaller batches up to 8 cups, then remove it and use a flat bottom paper filter in the bottom of the main basket or use the gold mesh filter without a paper filter. It’s nice to have all the options included so you can adjust brewing to your needs without having to go out and get anything. The brewer does come with a few paper filters so you can use it any of those ways immediately.
Cleanup is really easy, just remove the basked and throw out your grounds, pretty much like any coffee maker.
What I really like is the ease of cleaning up the, what they call “The Showerhead”, inside the top where the water comes out on the grounds. There’s a large knurled nut holding it in and a few light turns the nut comes off and the whole shower head comes out. It’s made of red silicone and is easily cleaned. Just put it back together in reverse order and it only took me a few seconds to remove and replace.
This brewer has a timer setting so you can set everything up the night before and wake up to fresh brewed coffee.
We won’t use this option much as the brewer is fast and we don’t have a set schedule to get up in the AM, but for someone on a set schedule “and when we were younger”, this is a really nice option to have. The brewer isn’t that overly loud, not more than others I’ve used and shouldn’t bother you while it brews.
In all this is an excellent coffee maker and haven’t had any problems with it at all. Be sure to read through the manual though as there are a lot of options you can set manually like “water hardness, brew temperature, bloom time, and so on”.

Better than my S8+
on April 12, 2018
Posted by: SteveC
from Central Mississippi
Ever since seeing the redesign of the Experia line I’ve wanted to get the XZ2. I’ve used the previous models and they were never something I wanted to use on a daily basis so I never kept them very long. My biggest complaint from the previous models too was how the camera compared to the completion and the Sony models just didn’t cut it for me, the XZ2 has changed everything.
The phone came nicely boxed, and included a fast charger, USB C cable, a USB C to audio jack to use the included wired ear buds, some replacement domes for the buds and some paperwork. The phone had a plastic cover over the screen and a small piece on the back of the phone.
The body of the phone itself is a big change from the old Sony design, it’s no longer squared and boxy feeling. The old design of their phones did feel very sturdy and heavy duty but I could never find them very comfortable to hold on to. The new design has everything rounded slightly with the back having a nice rounded design “sort of reminds me of the Nexus 6 shape” but the back is covered in very glossy and slick glass. It looks nice but it’s also slippery and a fingerprint magnet. That won’t bother me at all since I’ll be putting a case on it right away. The glass on the front is edge to edge going right up to the frame of the phone with a nice curve going into it so there’s no sharp feeling edges. This may make finding a glass screen protector that doesn’t have a halo effect around the edge hard to find but I’ll probably end up going with a wet apply flexible protector like I did on the S8+.
There’s a single USB C port on the bottom edge, nothing on the top or left edges, then the Camera, Power and Volume Rocker are all on the right edge. The speakers are actually front facing, the bottom being right at the edge of the glass between it and the frame, and the upper earpiece serving as the upper speaker. I like this setup, its true stereo and I’ve always found my hand blocking the bottom firing speaker of the S8+. I have hearing problems and these front firing speakers were very welcome. Also on the front “top” is the front “selfie” Camera, sensors and a notification LED, “something they all should have”. Then on the back you have the Fingerprint reader, Camera, Flash, and a couple sensors.
The XZ2 also has built in wireless charging, that’s about the only way I charge my phones anymore and won’t buy one without it, “really no reason for it not to be there”. We have quite a few wireless chargers around the house and we each have one in our vehicle. My wife also has an external battery pack that has wireless charging built in and it works perfectly with it. It’s just so much simpler to use that over having to plug it in. We would still use the just in case the phone was really low on power and needed a quick charge though.
The fingerprint reader is just barely above center, it’s a little lower than the G6s reader but it’s in a whole lot better location over the S8+. I’ve put my finger on the camera a couple times while getting use to the lower placement but that’s a lot better than constantly hitting the camera on the S8+, the reader on that is in just an odd location and not easy to reach at all. I’m more than happy with the location of the reader on the XZ2. The speed it unlocks the phone is almost instantaneous and I didn’t have any problems with it reading my finger. It would be nice if they added some functionality to the reader other than just reading fingerprints, hopefully they will address that in the near future.
The sim card slot doesn’t have the normal small hole and tool you have to use “and loose”, to get the tray out. It has an indentation next to the door and using a fingernail or credit card edge, you pop out the tray. I really like this as I’m constantly losing the sim tray tools. After powering up, connecting to my Wi-Fi network, signing into Google there were three system updates right off, the first one was around 120mb, the second was 420mb, the third I didn’t catch the size but all required a reboot. I had to program in the APN, which was easy to find under the menu and then made a couple test calls. Everyone I spoke with sounded clear and they didn’t have any problems hearing me, so I call that a success. The signal strength compared to the S8+ according to the LTE discovery app was about 2db less, not much but it was a little less. I use T-Mobile and with the S8+ it supported Voice over Wi-Fi, I have not been able to find that option and hopefully they will address that issue also although I rarely use it, but it’s nice to have as a backup.
The Screen is a big change for Sony, it’s a 5.7” screen, a little bit bigger than the 5.5” screen of the XZ: Premium, and is the newer 19:8 aspect ratio, just like the S8+ and G6. The new aspect ratio has really grown on me, I like how it helps make the phone narrower and easier to hold, especially using it one handed. The S8+ is quite large still, and almost too much for single handed use, I actually prefer the size of the XZ2 over it. The XZ2 screen is still a LCD panel but Sony has always had excellent LCD panels and, this one really stands out. It’s very clear and from an angle only the brightness changes, the colors really don’t shift at all from what I can see. My S8+ has the OLED and personally I could use either. The only thing I’ve never cared for with the OLED panels is the possibility of screen burn in. The XZ2s panel is very clear, the black levels are nice and deep, deeper looking over the G6 but naturally not as deep as the S8+ but I’d rather compare like panels than totally different technologies.
It was also nice to see that the Sony launcher lets you customize a lot of things, it’s much better than the Samsung’s and I ended up using Nova Launcher on that. The G6 is about the same for being customizable. The XZ2 let me do enough customizing that I won’t need to use Nova on it, which was a pretty big surprise, as I’ve used Nova for year as the manufacturers never let me tweak things exactly the way I like. I do wish they would let you use icon packs, but it looks like that may be possible in the future as there is an option to reset the icons back to normal, just no way I can see to change them.
The weight of the phone really surprised me, with cases on the G6 comes in at 7.3oz, the S8+ at 8.4oz and the XZ2 is 8.3, the G6 and S8+ have dual layer heavy duty cases, and the XZ2 has a thin TPU so it would probably end up heavier than the S8+. The build feels very sturdy and well built, and like the other Sony phones I’ve used in the past. The curved back glass, while looking really nice is super slipper and a major fingerprint magnet. It has already slid off my desk and survived the fall to the floor. And I’ve noticed if you set it down it has a tendency to move around on its own. Luckily I was able to find a TPU case for it before I had received it and that took care of the sliding around and slippery feeling problem, although you really shouldn’t have to put up with that but I can live with it. I happen to like the curved back feel, it’s more comfortable for me to hold on to.
I’ve used the camera a few times, took some outdoor pictures, and did a comparison between the G6, S8+ and XZ2. I set them all on maximum resolution, automatic mode in 16:9. Full screen the pictures all look pretty close and would hard to tell apart, plenty good for sharing online. But when you start zooming in, even just a little you can immediately see the G6 image isn’t as detailed. Zooming in even further you can see the S8+ images start to loose detail, especially in the shadows. I’m very pleased with the image quality that the XZ2 has shown so far and I’ll be shooting a lot more in the future. I also tried the super slow motion video and was really impressed with the video quality, it’s outstanding for slow motion. Getting it to shoot wasn’t the easiest though, you have to pick the mode from the small icon above the record button then you have to start the recording and then press the slow motion button to start the capture. It would be nice if they just had it start when you pressed the record button but it does work.
Sony really has changed things with the XZ2, not so much that you can’t tell it’s a Sony design and it’s enough of a difference from the other manufacturers that it doesn’t look like everything else out there.
I’m really happy with the phone and it’s going to take a while for me to figure out everything this can do.
So far battery life seems just as good as the S8+ or the G6 I just haven’t had it long enough to do a good comparison. Overall this is an excellent phone with just a couple small flaws that are easy to overlook. I’m not use to the power button location, for me it’s just too low, and the fingerprint reader could be higher but that’s pretty easy to get used to. The super slippery back is probably my biggest complaint, it’s just too slippery and the phone has a tendency to rotate and slide around on its own, fortunately a case takes care of that problem.

Wow, really impressed

We have a home theater projector and even though it has built in speakers they just aren’t that good, or loud enough due to my hearing problems.
I have a Bluetooth transmitter hooked to the audio out jack and had been using a Bose Soundlink II portable Bluetooth speaker with it and the sound was much better. I got this to compare the two and we were totally blown away by the difference.
The Sony SRS-XB21 speaker is more of a tubular shape, covered with a heavy weaved fabric, “very easy to hold on to” It came with a USB power cord, no charger, and manual. You’ll have to use your phone charger or any other USB charger you may already have. I used a multiport USB charger and that worked perfectly. Once you plug in the charger the charging led “next to the USB port” will glow till finished charging. You’ll want to use a 2A charger if you want it to charge fairly quickly, around 3 hours.
Powering up and pairing was very simple, I just had to put the transmitter into pairing mode and then turned on the speaker, pressed and held the power button for 3 seconds, then the pairing indicator light started blinking, about 4-5 seconds later it showed both were paired and ready to go. There’s also a built in NFC antenna so you can connect your phone easily, can even take phone calls over the speaker too if you wish.
Fortunately my transmitter allows for two devices so we could compare the Sony and the Bose side by side and there’s a definite difference between the two. First the Sony can go much louder than the Bose. There’s a ton of base to it also, we were both amazed just how much “Boom” this little speaker put out, way more than the Bose. For voice quality it was pretty much a dead tie, I preferred the Bose and my wife preferred the Sony. Battery life seems a little better with the Sony and during the 2.5hrs watching Lord of the Rings the battery level moved very little. Pressing the “Batt” button on the back gives you and voice announcement stating the level. Sony claims 10-12hrs of battery life and this looks pretty close to being accurate from what we observed.
Sony also has some neat built in features that allows you to pair more than one device “chain them together” so you could have a left – right speaker set up if you wanted. But for as loud as this little speaker is there’s no need for us to do that at all. It is also rated IP67 water resistant, which means it can get completed immersed in water up to 3’, don’t think I’ll be testing this but it’s nice to know if you want to take it with you while outdoors.
There’s also some built in lighting that will blink to the rhythm of music, it doesn’t work very well for movies but during a sound score it kept up pretty good. It’s not a feature we will use and fortunately Sony allows turning that off.
And then there’s also a “Party Booster" feature that while you are holding the speaker in your hand and tap on different areas of the speaker to create sound effects like “drum, record scratch, and a cowbell. Neat for the kids but can’t see us using that.
In all, this is an excellent speaker, and trying it out to use with our home theater mainly worked out better than we planned. What I really like is its size, if I’m the only one watching a movie I can set it right in front of me and hear it perfectly. With my wife or company in the room I can place it further out on the coffee table and there’s more than plenty volume for everyone to hear.

Very Impressive

I’ve been wanting a projector for a long time, just haven’t gotten around to getting one till now. The main reason I held back was due to the cost of replacement lamps. Older models and even some still out today have lamps that cost around $200 to replace every couple of years, or a lot sooner, “not bad but still too high for me”. I saw that this Epson model had lamps that cost around $50 and last around 4k hours. Which was easily in the price I would be willing to pay for a replacement lamp. Now onto the review.
The projector arrived nicely packed, all cradled in a Styrofoam shell. In with the projector was the remote control, power cord, batteries for the remote and manual. That’s it, nothing else, no cabling is included, and fortunately I have plenty of extras laying around.
We already have a 65” 4k LED mounted above our fireplace and I decided to mount a 100” screen just above and in front of it so we could use both. The projector would be mainly used for movie night and the TV for regular viewing and this setup works out really well for us. I have the projector sitting at 15’ from the screen on a tripod with a tray made for projectors, a long range blue tooth transmitter is hooked to the audio out port on the back of the projector. It is being use with one of our Bluetooth speakers. For video and streaming options I only have a Roku 3 hooked up at the moment.
Setup was really fast, I set the projector on the stand, hooked up the Roku, plugged in power and turned it on. I only had to do some minor image adjustments to get the screen centered, sized and focused. All very simply done by using the zoom slider and focus controls on the top front of the projector. I only had to use the “Lens Shift” a little, and that was mainly just to get the image adjusted an inch higher.
I did try moving it further to see how far you could raise and lower the image and was really impressed there was so much movement available.
We were both really impressed by the image quality right out of the box without any tweaking to the image. We did set this up at night and our living room was plenty dark so image brightness wasn’t a problem right off. There are two HDMI ports on the back along with VGA and an audio out port. I’m only using one port for the Roku, I do have a Chromecast and some other streaming boxes along with a DVD player we can hook up to the other port.
The projector itself had a lot of image adjustment settings under the menus, “reading the manual and learning what all the settings are for is a must”, and you can really tweak the settings any way you want.
After spending some time reading through the manual, and tweaking the image to our liking and environment I was able to get the picture very close to the 4k tv sitting behind it, “mind you the clarity isn’t as good as the 4k but for a 100” screen 15” away it’s amazing”. Black levels aren’t as good as the 4k TV, but this is a projector projecting onto a white screen so blacks are never going to be deep black but they are very close.
Image quality watching a movie was outstanding, there’s no lag or flickering when watching an action movie, Lord of the Rings was impressive, just like being in the movie theater without the audience. My wife was very hesitant at first when I told her my plan, she thought a 100” screen would be way too big, now she loves it. She was also impressed with the image quality and said there’s now no reason for us to go to the theater unless we need to see something when it comes out.
The projector does have a built in speaker, it’s rated at 10 watts and it’s actually pretty loud, about the same volume “maybe a little better” than the 4k TV, but with the projector sitting back against the wall right close to where we were sitting the sound was a little unnatural coming from that direction. I had a Bluetooth transmitter already and use a stereo cable that came with it to plug into the audio out jack. We also have a couple Bluetooth speakers, an Ion Block Party and a Bose portable, both of which linked up sound great, plus we can place those anywhere we want to get the best sound quality.
The projector itself when running does make some noise, it’s not as loud as projectors I’ve used in the past. If you set the power setting to “ECO” the fan noise cuts way down, and while a movie is playing we never even noticed it. On full power setting the fan is a little noticeable, but not during a movie. There is quite a bit of heat coming out of the vent and you’ll want to make sure you’re not sitting in the direction it’s blowing. During the day if we decide to use it, we do have to turn the power mode to “Full” otherwise the image is a little too washed out. Our living room during the day has moderate ambient lighting, and we do close the blinds if we want to watch a movie during the day, “but that’s what we have the 4k TV for too ”.
I’ve used projectors in the past, a good 20 years ago and this Epson is leaps and bounds better than those ever were. The picture at 1080p is simply outstanding, and if you spend some time tweaking the image from the factory settings you will be really impressed with the image quality.

Decent bluetooth solution

I wanted these Bluetooth enabled headphones to use with our home theater setup. I have hearing problems and using a headphone while watching a movie for me is pretty much a must.
I already have a set of Sony noise cancelling MDRZX110NC on the ear headphones, these are the cheapest NC headphones Sony makes and they are wired so I’ll be comparing the two.
I was really surprised how light these were considering they are wireless, and have a 20hr rated listening time. These are almost exactly the same as the wired set I have. The headband seems a lot stiffer and the adjustment sliders are a lot further up on the band than they are with the wired pair. The wired pair feel more comfortable to me as the headband isn’t quite as tight and more flexible. The ear pads are almost identical between the two so there’s not much difference between them for padding comfort. They both have 30mm Neodymium Drivers so there isn’t much difference between them speaker wise either.
Both headsets fold up for travel and storage, the wired set let the headphone pieces rotate and turn upward where the wireless set only rotate for flat storage so the wired set are a lot more compact for travel.
The sound quality between them is almost identical, for me there’s not much difference, but the wireless set won’t go as loud as the wired pair but I don’t need max volume with the wireless pair anyway. The lows are pretty good, plenty of bass and highs are crisp, I can at least hear everything going on during a movie with either pair. The noise cancelling on the wired pair works pretty good, but being these are the low end of their line the noise cancelling isn’t as strong as their high end models, but it is noticeable when comparing the two.
Now the main reason why I wanted the wireless is pretty obvious, not having to worry about the cord is a huge help. I have a Bluetooth transmitter hooked up to our HD projector and already use it to connect to our Bose Bluetooth speaker. The transmitter I have works with two devices simultaneously and I can listen with the headset while everyone else can hear through the speaker. Or I can watch silently in the evening without disturbing anyone. The headset connected to the transmitter easily the first try, and there’s almost no sound lag “if any”. The range on these is outstanding, the transmitter I have is a high powered one rated for 60m and I have no problem leaving the room and going to the other side of our house with no signal loss.

I’ve also paired these with my Samsung S8+ and made a couple calls, the sound is nice and clear and everyone I called said they could hear me perfectly. This helps a lot for me as I don’t have to be wearing my hearing aids “also Bluetooth enabled” to make or receive calls. Plus I can answer calls using the power button by just giving it a quick tap to answer and another tap to end the call
.
The main disadvantage I found with this headset is you cannot use them while they are charging. Not sure why Sony did this, as it would be nice to be able to charge while wearing just in case you forget to charge them or have been using the for a long time. I haven’t worn them for the rated 20 hours, “don’t plan to”, but have to make sure I keep them charged up for use. I have plenty of long USB cables that would work fine while to charge and use at the same time, so I’m pretty disappointed not being able to do that.
In all these are a decent set of Bluetooth headphones, not great, but good enough if you are like me and have hearing problems and want a solution to help hear movies, videos, or to make phone calls and not shell out a ton of money for a high end set. There are a lot of under $100 headphones out there and I'd do a lot of comparing to see which ones meet my needs.

Stream your favorite shows on this 60-inch Hisense television. Its 3840 x 2160 resolution and 8 ms response time bring scenes to life, and 4K upscaling transforms lower quality video into HD resolution. This Hisense television is equipped with HDMI inputs to connect to a gaming console or Blu-ray player.

Very good for the price

The TV came in a large box and had 4 plastic clips you remove toward the bottom, after removing them the outer and upper portion of the box slides right off making it very easy to lift the unit out.
I was surprised by the weight of the TV, it’s around 45lbs, which is super light. Inside the box besides the tvTV is a bag containing the instruction manual, remote, power cord, and batteries. The two stand legs are in the top of the box, you either have to cut the tape on the top or pull the Styrofoam piece out through the bottom. We didn’t attach the legs as this is being wall mounted.
Powering the unit on you get the Hisense logo and then the setup screen asking language, time zone, and a couple other things, it also scans for the OTA channels if you have it hooked to an antenna.
We will be using this as a streaming device and will use the built in apps or a Roku.
The remote that came with it is more of a standard TV remote, not the “smart” remote that came with the Samsung, and I prefer that over the Samsung’s, there are things you cannot bring up easily with the Samsung’s and that why I purchased an original style remote for it and barely use the “smart” one. I much prefer the old style remote.
There are plenty of inputs on the back, we are only using one HDMI input but there are a couple more for other things, plus a USB port, composite in and an optical digital out. If you are looking at the front of the TV the ports are all on the left, the power cord attaches on the right.
We have a series 6 65” Samsung in our main living area so I can compare this one to that.
There are plenty of apps that are already installed, the only one missing that we use on a daily basis was Sling, hopefully that will be ported over to their OS someday, otherwise we will be using a Roku 3 to stream Sling. The apps load pretty fast, and they seem to run a little faster than the one on the Samsung, enough to notice a difference. The layout of the Amazon app is different than the one on the Samsung and I actually prefer it better.
Checking viewing angles the Hisense is almost as good as the Samsung, not quite as good, but at viewing height they are pretty close, there is noticeable color shift at very high viewing angles, but for this price range I was surprised. Neither of these are high end units so I didn’t expect much especially in this price range. Straight on the pictures are super close, although I haven’t fine-tuned the Hisense yet so I could probably get the images really close. I streamed “The Man in the High Castle” on both and the devices showed they are being shown in UHD 4k. The Hisense actually took a few seconds for the picture to adjust, when the show began it started at 720 then jumped to 1080 then to UHD, it only took maybe 30 seconds or so at the start for it to catch up, I didn’t see that problem with the Samsung, but it’s such a short time for it to do it that really doesn’t bother us. Otherwise the UHD image was nice and clear. Black levels aren’t quite as dark as they could have been on the Hisense but I may improve that after tweaking the image, but in this price range, I’m still impressed. On a black screen there’s a little back light bleed, not much, and it’s a lot better than the Samsung, the Hisense has a much smoother across the screen Black where the Samsung’s has very noticeable banding, this isn’t a problem at all while either unit is displaying an image.
The big thing we noticed is the sound, the Hisense is much louder and clearer than the Samsung’s, can’t even do a comparison between the two there’s that big of a difference. There’s definitely more bass to it and with my poor hearing I could really tell the difference. Still not as good as a soundbar or surround system, but it’s very usable.
For us this is a good TV for our spare living area and it didn’t cost much especially if you can get it on sale.

Decent student or kids starter laptop

I wanted to check out a Chromebook mainly for something simple to travel with that has good battery life.
From the outside this Acer Chromebook looks like a regular laptop. It has 2 USB 3 ports, HDMI out, headphone jack and SD card reader. Opening it up you have a regular chicklet style keyboard “no keypad and the keys are not backlit”, a nice large trackpad and speakers flanking each side of the keyboard. This isn’t a thin and light unit but more of a standard unit with large bezels around the screen and it’s as thick as all the other cheaper laptops I’ve seen lately.
Booting up is very fast, almost no wait time for the login screen to appear. Setup was quick and easy as it used my Google login and password to get it set up, and after entering my password booting to the home screen is just about as fast. There’s no cooling fan and this unit makes absolutely no noise while running it. The system did have to do a pretty big update, it came with version 56 and upgraded to 62.
The screen is very basic 1366x768, you can push the resolution a little higher but I noticed it didn’t look as clear. The viewing angle is pretty limited and you need to have it centered just right to look the best. The image starts to shift quite a bit as soon as you turn or change the angle. This is typical of what I’ve seen on cheaper laptops and for me being use to 1080hd screens it is very noticeable. I tried watching a movie on it through Google movies and it looked ok, just a little washed out, it did run fine without stutter though and the speakers actually sounded pretty good for this price range.
Speed wise it ran all the Google apps I tried very fast, Gmail, Chrome, Docs, and the movies all ran quickly. I didn’t bog it down too much with multiple apps running but I usually keep that to a minimum anyway. The 4gb of memory is nice, the 16gb of storage is pretty limited but it connects to Google Drive and you get 100gb of storage with this unit, you just have to be connected to the internet to use it. I ran it for a few hours and barely used up and the battery level barely moved, I can see it getting close to the 12hrs that they advertise, it just depends on what you are doing.
For me the Chrome OS isn’t for me, I rely on a lot of things this cannot do and would use my android tablet probably more. But if you want a simple system with a larger screen for web browsing, email, hangouts, and google docs I think this would be a great machine for that. Especially for kids in school, college students on a budget or older folks that just don’t want to mess around with a more complicated system like a full Android tablet or Windows laptop.

Very nice addition to the Yoga line.
By SteveC from Mississippi
I received mine a couple days ago, I returned a Yoga Pro 2 as the scaling of the high resolution screen was something I didn't like, and that the yellow color was still off after the patch, better but still off, especially when you turned down the brightness.
The screen on this is a full 1080p and is more fitting for this size of a screen and so far I haven't had the scaling problems I had with the Ideapad. The colors are bright, crisp, and yellow looks like yellow, no green hue to it at all. The only thing I noticed is upon boot there's some light bleeding on the top edge of the LCD, it's not that bad and disappears once the main background has loaded.
The Thinkpad is definitely heavier and thicker than the Ideapad Yogas but the build quality is very sturdy and there's room for a 2.5" 7mm hard drive. The 5400 RPM drive that comes with it isn't the fastest but the 16gb M.2 SSD catching drive helps. I'm planning on replacing the main drive with a large SSD.
I haven't had a chance to use it much yet but it looks like this one is a keeper, easier to update and expand, and windows scaling handles the 1080p screen much better. The keyboard as IMHO is much better than the Ideapads, the keys are larger and it feels like a normal laptop keyboard. I really don't have an opinion about the track point mouse as I use a wireless mouse 99% of the time, but the little I tried it seemed to work fine.
The last thing is heat, the Yoga 2 Pro got very hot after an hour or so of watching a movie, the fans were still very quiet but it was too warm for my liking. The Thinkpad running the exact same thing was much cooler. Looking at the underside of the laptop you can see there are a lot more vents for cooling than what the Ideapad has, "basically 0" but that also means you have to be careful not to block those vents or I'm sure the unit will get just as hot as the Ideapad.
Next I'll be trying out some games so see how it handles the heat using the Geforce GT840M, that's another very nice addition not very often seen on this size of laptop.

Update
November 4, 2014
I've successfully changed the drives around, I now have a 240gb Crucial M500 7mm SSD as the main drive and a 256gb Transcend M.2 SSD as a data/storage drive, works perfectly. I used the USB restoration drive I created to do a clean install of Windows, now this machine boots lightning fast and runs even cooler than before.
I've played Fallout 3 with all the settings on Med-High and the resolution set at 1080.
The game plays flawlessly and the machine doesn't get too hot, actually a lot cooler than I expected and the keyboard/trackpad area never got warm to the touch.
So far this exactly the laptop I've been waiting for. A smaller portable laptop that can play games, and as a bonus can turn into a tablet, "a very large tablet" but very functional as a tablet none the less.

Just an FYI, do not buy this and plan on returning if t doesn't fit, BB will not refund after the package has been opened.
I purchased this for my wife and it didn't fit properly and wanted one with an ear hook.
I took it back the CSR and MOD both said they cannot take it back as it's a Motorola policy????
No where is it posted on the display, the website or receipt that you cannot return this item once opened.
Just a warning to anyone thinking about purchasing this item.

I did say "Do not buy if you plan on returning"
But as and update to this. After calling the Best Buy customer care number and they checked into the problem.
The CSR stated he didn't see why they wouldn't return it and contacted the store and spoke to the MOD that refused the return. He came back after a few minutes and asked me if I could return it to a different store providing there's one closer "which there is".
I took it back yesterday to the other store and the person at the returns desk said their system showed the same thing "Open Box" unable to return.
The MOD there took the time to look into the issue and returned the item stating that it's not a Motorola policy but just a mistake in their system, and that the MOD at the other store was just being lazy and not wanting to take the effort to look up the problem.
I'd be happy if BB wanted to remove this review if they know the issue with the returns has been resolved.
