CD player

This might be closer to 4.5 stars.. It's a good device for what it is. It's a throwback to when phones were for calls and people played music on devices that were just for music, or recorded books. This plays CDs. It doesn't stream anything or have a radio option. If you want to play some kind of CD, this is a really good player.
The sound quality is good. It allows the user to plug in headphones or a speaker. It comes with a set of earbuds and batteries. The batteries last a while, since this player doesn't drain them quickly, but rechargeable ones might be a good idea. If you want to be able to plug it in, you'll have to purchase the adapter for that.
This player has several functions- it has the option to program (a simpler version of a playlist), has 3 preset equalizer settings, and anti-skip or ESP. This last one is a must in a portable CD player.
The downside with this player is that it doesn't have bluetooth or any way to carry it. You're limited by the length of the cord, and you can't wear the player or put it in your pocket. For some, this might be a deal breaker, but most people shopping for a CD player won't be surprised by this, and will deal with those minor inconveniences to have a chance to play their CDs. I would have liked to be able to step away by connecting another device wirelessly. Another minor thing is the small screen fades out the top of the numbers. It makes it harder to read them, although it doesn't prevent the user from using any of the features.
In spite of these, it's a good CD player. It plays CDs well with no problems. It also has a low battery indicator so you can keep an eye on that (if it's not plugged in). Obviously if it's going with you, you'll want to know about the battery life, so this is important. It's black with black earbuds, and is small, but easy to use. I would recommend this for playing CDs.

For fresh and clean carpets

This is formulated for use in Hoover machines, to deal with stains, especially pet related ones, while leaving the carpet with a slight scent that freshens the room without having too much scent to it. It works with deep cleaning machines to remove stains and dirt, rinsing out easily. I didn't notice any residue left behind, which attests to the quality of the machine as well as the cleaning solution. This is a great option for homes with pets. The cats didn't like the machine, but didn't mind the smell of the carpet after, and we (the people) liked the results too. It cleans really well, restoring the carpet to a much improved condition.

Excellent carpet cleaner
on April 13, 2020
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
This performs great, no more getting down on the carpet to scrub stains. Even in households without pets, this is everything you'll need, but for a home with pets, it does an amazing job.
My cats are well trained and we've had no accidents in that regard, but there have been a couple places of regurgitated cat food that I spot cleaned but weren't quite clean enough for me, and a mystery spot that no one owned up to- these were the main areas I needed cleaned, plus the high traffic areas of the living room and hallway. Usually pet products are designed to deal with the toughest of stains or odors, and that's why I wanted this product, although I do have two cats (and a dog who visits).
This didn't have too many parts, and was easy to assemble. I could have put it together without instructions, since it was mostly assembled already, but I did read the manual. The user manual is very clear about putting it together, using the different features, and cleaning and maintaining it after use. It's also very easy to use. There's a tank for the cleaning solution, one for clean warm water, and one for dirty water. The pretreating wand also has a small tank for the solution to pretreat stains. I had one large spot that I pretreated and let sit while I did another part of the room, for about 15 minutes. When I went over it with the cleaner, the spot just about disappeared with the first pass, and was definitely gone the second time I went over it. The whole carpet is the cleanest it has ever been. Except for those two areas, I didn't think it was that dirty, but this pulled up dirt and cat hair I didn't realize was down in the carpet. I thoroughly vacuumed right before, and still it pulled out more than I expected. The manual mentions the antimicrobial brush and pet tool; the results which are things you can't see, but can feel better about that extra bit of cleaning this provides, especially when you have pets or kids on these floors.
After filling the the cleaner with carpet cleaning solution and warm water, then plugging in, it's as simple as pushing the handle release button and the the power button, both with your foot and no effort. Then you basically vacuum the carpet, except that moving forward cleans and pulling back dries, and you want to go a little slower than you would vacuum. The machine covers a wider area than the vacuum, so you don't have to make as many passes. After cleaning, the solution tank can be removed to go over it again with just warm water. Then push the dry only button and go over the carpet to remove all the excess water. No more wet carpets to worry about.
It couldn't be easier to use, and the results are amazing. I wish I had taken before and after pictures. I especially like that you don't have to push a button or trigger to dispense the carpet shampoo. It automatically mixes with the water, cleaning as you push forward. Another thing I liked is the design- the removable parts came off easily, and reattached in the same way, so most people can handle this without assistance. I know I've used easy or easier multiple times, but I was surprised how much less effort this takes compared to previous products I've tried. This carpet cleaner gets the job done really well without seeming like work. If you can vacuum, you can clean with this, and I'm happy with the results.

Dash mount for cellphone
on March 8, 2020
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty

This product worked well for me. It has three parts: the dash mount, which looks like a small silver snowglobe, the orbiter magnetic socket, which is flat on one side and the other has a silicone center that fits on the dash mount, and a thin metal plate. The dash mount obviously goes directly onto the dash of a vehicle. It has strong adhesive to keep it in place. The metal piece adheres to your phone in the same way. It also comes with an alcohol wipe to clean your phone before attaching. The orbiter does not stick to either of the other pieces, but is magnetic like the dash mount. It's a strong magnet; I stuck it to my fridge and it's much stronger than anything else I've used on the fridge- which it needs to be, so it holds the phone in place. I did read before using it that the magnets won't hurt the phone.
I attached the dash mount per the included instructions, which says to wait 24 hours before using. I gave it a little longer. Everyone who got in my car noticed and asked about it. It's shiny and silver and looks kind of nice all by itself. Then the plate goes either on the phone or the phone case by using the alcohol wipe, letting it dry, and then removing the backing to the adhesive. Both of these are quick and easy to do, but then you wait for the adhesive to be really secure (24 hours or more for this one too). I thought the piece that went on the phone would be different; it's so flat that it doesn't add any bulk to your phone or the case. It's black, which means it'll stand out if your phone or phone case is a light or bright color, but mine is dark and the disc wasn't that noticeable.
The orbiter is what allows you to adjust the position of your phone. Some phone holders keep your phone in one position but this is designed to hold the phone securely at different angles. I had no problems with attaching the two pieces or in using it. It's pretty simple to use too. It worked well for me and I really like having my phone where I can see it now. I especially liked when using a navigation app, that I could glance to see the miles to the next step. It also prevents my phone from falling. I haven't been using it for long, a little more than a week, but I've had no problems. I like that the directions also tell you how to remove the adhesive if you need to take off the dash mount at some point.

Good epilator
on March 5, 2020
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
The description of this epilator mentions that it is corded, and compact. It doesn't come with a pouch, but is still easy to take along on a trip. It is smaller than my rechargeable shaver, although it is wider. It has a set of directions that I didn't find very helpful. It's a lot of information in small print, and if you're new to using this type of device, it might be enough info. It also refers to parts not included with this item. This comes with the epilator, cord, brush, and a cap for sensitive skin.
Not that it's hard to use- it's easy, but I ended up looking online before getting started. It was my first time using an epilator, so I can't compare to other products. It's an inexpensive model which might make a difference for some users, but I was happy to try this. My first attempt was a little disappointing. It hurt, even with the cap, and I didn't finish my underarm. I tried it on my face, to see if that might be an option. It is not good for the face, although I will point out it doesn't claim to be. There are better products for that. It worked well on my legs. I had to get used to the way it feels, and move slower than with products that don't remove the hair completely, but it did a really good job. It fits comfortably in the hand, and is easy to hold onto.
It has been more than a week and I'm very satisfied with the results. I did try using it again on the underarm area and it went better with the second attempt. For me, that area is too sensitive to do the whole area at one time. I did about half on each side before taking a break. Some people are less sensitive and might not have any trouble with it. I'm glad I tried again before writing this, because more practice allows me to see that the right technique makes a difference. If I go slower than I would if I was shaving, it does a good job, and the area will be smooth. It will leave some visible dots, but they were fine the next day.
It has two speeds. I ended up using the sensitive cap the whole time, which was less painful. Epilation is usually somewhat painful, as are tweezing and waxing. This is no more painful than those, maybe even a little less, especially when doing your legs. It's easier the more you continue to use it, and you'll also adjust to the way it feels. I do recommend this product, and will continue to use it for my legs in particular, since it did such a good job.

More comfortable keyboard
on January 26, 2020
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
This keyboard by Logitech is more comfortable than you might expect from its appearance. It looks distinctly different from the average keyboard, not rectangular nor flat. The keys are split and angled in such a way as to allow the user to have their hands in a more natural position, which reduces strain on hands, wrists, shoulders and even the back, since the upper body can be more relaxed and use better posture while typing. When you're on the computer a lot, you get used to using the keyboard and ignore that it's not a natural position, which often leads to problems like carpal tunnel syndrome, or just pain or discomfort if you're sitting in that position for a while. There is an adjustment period as you learn to use this keyboard, but it's worth it to try out. And you don't have to already have a problem to want an ergonomic setup. Logitech also has an ergonomic vertical mouse that goes perfectly with this.
The wrist rest is built in, rather than a separate piece. It's soft to the touch but still firm for support. I've used one that's memory foam, and this one is actually more comfortable over time. Instead of feet at the back, this device has 2 sets under the front, which gives you the option of to adjust the height of the front of the keyboard, for additional wrist support if needed. I had it in my lap for a while but it's meant to be on a surface. Because it's wireless, you can sit farther back from the screen
It comes with a USB receiver for connecting with a computer, but it can be stored in the battery compartment if Bluetooth connectivity is utilized instead. It connects easily with either one, and then it prompts you to install software. This contains information about programming the function keys, unless the user chooses to keep them as the traditional F keys. It also guides you through some of the other features, and how to switch devices. It can connect with up to three different devices. It has the usual keyboard layout with the numeric keypad on the right. It's compatible with multiple operating systems, including Windows, iOS, and android. It is wireless, with no option to connect with a cable, and it not rechargeable. It takes AAA batteries, and one could use rechargeable batteries, but this device claims that battery life is very long anyway. I've only been using this a few days, so I can't tell if that will be a problem later on. There is an on/off switch, would can conserve battery life.
I had no problems with this keyboard. I had to adjust to the angle on the keys, and would hit some keys wrong, but once I adjusted to it, I was able to type with my normal speed and accuracy. Each day the adjustment period is shorter-day three was brief. Now I want one for my office, because that one is harder to use when this one feels so much better to use. It's light enough to take with you, but is a little too big to be portable. It takes up a bit more space on the desk, but it's more room for your arms while using the keyboard in a more natural position. I recommend this for anyone who spends time using a keyboard.

Great little mouse
on December 2, 2019
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
This is a great little mouse. It's smaller than average but really comfortable to use. I used it at the office, and it was noticeably different. Even after using all day, it still felt comfortable. I was concerned it might be a little too small for work, but I didn't even notice the size once I started using it, and discovered how well this mouse functions. I plugged the receiver into the computer, turned on the mouse, and it took no time for the drivers to install so that I could use it. It also can connect via bluetooth for devices that support that option.
The top of the mouse comes off easily. It has magnets, so removal requires no effort, and it returns just as easily; the magnets keep it securely in place. I liked this better than others that have compartments on the bottom, which are sometimes hard to open. The receiver is stored in this compartment, along with the battery. This mouse goes to sleep when idle, ensuring the battery lasts a long time. It comes with the battery preinstalled.
The on/off switch is on the bottom next to the optical sensor, and it has the usual buttons, left and right click as well as the wheel for scrolling. It's really smooth to use. I was surprised how much smoother than my regular wired mouse, and even the wireless one at home. The tracking on the screen was better too, quicker with greater accuracy. The buttons are very quiet and more sensitive than other mice I've used, which was an adjustment. It takes a lot less pressure to click, and I could complete tasks faster with this mouse once I got used to it. I felt this improved productivity with my work, and will continue to use this there full time. My wired mouse has been retired. Overall I'm impressed, it's not an expensive mouse, but really great quality for long term use. It's small, but not too small, very well constructed. I can't think of anything that needs improvement.

Wireless keyboard
on November 23, 2019
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
This wireless keyboard is easy to use. It's portable, light and compact, but the keys feel full sized. There's very little border around the keys and it's so thin, allowing it to seem small while remaining very comfortable to type with. It connected via bluetooth to both my phone and my laptop with out any hesitation. It also has a USB receiver, tucked inside the battery cover. This cover has a place to sit a phone or small tablet. My phone was too big to fit in its case, but my tablet fit. I tried my larger iPad in the upright position, but it was too heavy and tipped it back. This isn't a flaw in the keyboard, since it's meant to sit your phone in.
It has really long battery life, partly because it automatically goes to sleep when not in use. I haven't had it long enough to know if it lasts the full amount stated, but such long battery life is nice to have. Most devices would need regular charging or battery changes, and I'm expecting to avoid this with this Logitech keyboard.
It can be used with other operating systems, but is designed specifically for Chromebooks, with Chrome shortcut keys built into the keyboard. One of the best features is the Easy Switch button, which lets you stay connected to two devices and move back and forth just by clicking this switch. It's not as small as the keyboard for my iPad, but this includes the number keypad on the right, and function keys, so I can do more with it.
There's really nothing to set up, just pull out the tab under the battery cover, and connect to your devices. I really liked being able to type on my phone with an actual keyboard, and found it very comfortable. If you get tired of typing with a finger or thumb, this makes it easier to do a lot more typing, especially since I use my phone more for work these days. For that reason, and for the Chrome specific features, I highly recommend this keyboard.

Small but powerful 2in1 laptop
on November 18, 2019
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
Sleek, slim, silver- this laptop looks attractive, and performs even better than expected. The first thing after the outside of the laptop that I noticed was the power cord; it comes in two parts, with a braided cord for extra durability. With this cord and the Thunderbolt port, charging completes very quickly. Other devices can connect to this port, or the other USB C port. There's also a collapsible USB 2.0 port, but no HDMI or ethernet ports. The Wifi 6 technology with dual antenna makes the connection such that you won't miss the option for ethernet. I used it in a room where Wifi is sometimes spotty on other devices, and this had no hesitation in loading pages or downloading.
It has incredible battery life, especially when you consider how quickly it charges. The screen resolution is beautiful, with clear colors and pictures. One of my favorite features is the fingerprint scanner. This works really well and eliminates the need to log in with a password each time. It has some of the best features of a tablet, combined with the best from a laptop- the scanner, great picture and sound (with its dual speakers), and the Intel i7 processor. Another thing a lot of people will like is the switch that turns off the camera, for privacy, if you're concerned about outside access to your camera.
The Intel Optane memory boosts the SSD, so that it speeds up performance, including the loading of saved files and programs. For some, the 8GB of RAM might seem like it's not enough to some, and there isn't a way to upgrade yourself, but it isn't an issue for me. I had no problems with anything I did on this, and it's more than enough when you consider how smoothly the whole system runs. Overall, that's what I observed and found most impressive- the wifi, the processor, the memory and drive all work at speeds that keep things moving, whether you're using this for internet browsing, or more resource intensive tasks. It's not a gaming computer, but you don't buy one this size for that. It's compact without sacrificing performance.
It doesn't have an optical drive, which is typical for a laptop of this size. It comes with a sleeve that's a perfect fit; it offers protection without adding bulk, maintaining portability. The sleeve also has a spot to hold the HP stylus pen that came with this model. It can be used in different modes, not just the usual laptop position. Folding the keyboard back to hold it like a tablet is another option, but those aren't the only two positions. The keyboard is also easy to use, and doesn't feel too small. It's comfortable to use. It's also backlit, so you can see better in low light.
I found this laptop as portable as a tablet, with the power one might expect in a larger laptop, or even your average desktop. It definitely exceeds expectations, as it's more than just the sum of its parts. It was clearly designed so those parts enhance each other without the need for a bigger device, and will be versatile enough for most users to be very satisfied with this purchase.

Homemade pasta
on November 8, 2019
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
If you're interested in eating healthier, one way is to make more food at home. This pasta maker allows users to make their own pasta at home, and makes it so easy. It mixes, kneads and extrudes for you. It comes with four discs to make different pasta- spaghetti, fettuccine, penne, or lasagna noodles, and a storage compartment to keep them in. It also comes with a tool that helps get remove remaining dough, and aids in the cleanup process. It really is easy to use and clean after.
Just put the ingredients in- measured as indicated in the booklet- no need to mix before. It reminded me of a good bread maker, which takes the work out of it and simplifies it to appeal to more users, not just those who have a lot of time. It takes less than ten minutes to extrude (push out) the pasta, maybe fifteen minutes for the entire process.
It comes with a small book with how to make the dough and a bunch of recipes. There's room to make variations and try different ingredients, including different kinds of flour, and juice instead of water. You can also choose between with or without egg. As long as you stick to the proportions of wet and dry ingredients, it allows for experimenting with different recipes. It is very different from the dried boxed pasta. It's adjustment, but very good pasta. It's softer, but you can dry it before cooking for better results.
This would be especially good for someone who wants or needs gluten free, as it'll taste better than a lot of gluten free options. It does tend to stick together, at least with the spaghetti.
Pros: healthier, known ingredients, no preservatives, fun to make, easy, since the machine does most of the work.
Cons: doesn't make a lot (less than a pound), alternative flours are more expensive .
This isn't really cheaper than buying the boxed pasta, but there are benefits to fresh pasta. If you've bought the pasta maker, your focus is on healthier eating and not on cutting corners with the least expensive option. Overall, I really enjoyed trying out the fresh pasta, and while it won't always replace other pasta, it will be get regular use. There's still plenty we haven't tried yet.
