Fast charger for two devices
on November 10, 2020

The Belkin 24W wall charger comes with just the charger, which can fit two cables of your choosing; any regular USB cable that is a USB-A on the end that goes into the charger should work. I was able to charge two different phones at the same time, without slowing down either one. I also used it for charging an iPad with my phone. It charges up tablets at a high rate of speed too, which is especially important to me—I need a charger that can charge up all my devices quickly, and this does the job. All my regular cables worked with this, USB-micro, USB-C, and lightning cables, as long as the other end is the regular USB.
It is white, blending in with the wall, and is fairly compact. It goes directly into the wall outlet, which means your device is limited by the length of the cable; if you have a longer cable, you can have your device farther from the plug, but that’s the same as other wall chargers. What makes this one different, is that it can provide 12W of charging for each device, without slowing down when the second device is plugged in. I did not notice a difference even when I added my tablet while my phone was charging. I don’t have a way of measuring the actual watts, but it’s noticeably faster than another charging base I have that is 9W. I recommend this product for charging two devices at high speed.

KitchenAid blender, crushes ice in seconds
on November 10, 2020
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty

This blender performs as advertised – it crushes ice in seconds, even on the lowest speed, it goes from ice to slush in a surprisingly short time. It does this task effortlessly, blended the ice into the rest of the ingredients seamlessly. Smoothies, milkshakes, coffee drinks, and other beverages can be prepared easily. I also used it for sauce with similar results. Put liquid on the bottom, softer ingredients next, solid items, then ice or frozen pieces and click the dial to the first speed, then up again for smoother results. You can click it down to crush the ice first, but it can still crush it and blend well without that step. I like that it has 3 speeds, but I didn’t need the third for anything I fixed. It does not come with a cookbook or suggestions for recipes, just the manual, which does include stacking instructions for ingredients. I found recipes online that I wanted to try, and I had no trouble making them in this blender.
The blade does not detach from the jar, although it looks like with a tool you could remove it, but for regular use, you’ll end up washing the whole jar. The easiest way is to put warm soapy water in it (about a third to half full) and put it back on the base; turn it on the lowest setting, and it’ll clean the blade and inside of the jar. I use my sprayer to rinse, which gets the soap off as well as anything that was in the jar. I cleaned mine right away and nothing remained after that. The lid has a good snug fit, necessary for any blender, and sits securely on the base once you’ve attached it. The jar is plastic, but still thick enough that it feels like it will hold up for a long time, and that also makes it easier to lift and pour, since it’s not very heavy even when full.
This version comes with the 48 oz jar, and two smaller jars for making individual drinks. After removing from the base, there are lids (one for each cup) to make it into a travel cup you can drink from. There is a different base with a blade to use with these smaller jars. The blender is mostly black (jars are clear), and the lids are black also. This is quite easy to use, just plug it in and get started. It does not have any kind of light to indicate it’s plugged in or in use, and no screen- but it’s a blender, with basic functions, and you can see when it has blended everything together. I’ve used blenders that don’t blend all the way through, and this one had no sections or pieces left that were not completely blended in. I had great results with this blender and can recommend it for home use.

Good wireless headphones
on October 30, 2020
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
These JLab Studio Pro headphones are a really good value for the price. They are light and compact. The best features are the sound and comfort. The cushions on the band and earcups are soft and very comfortable. The earcups cover the ear completely which blocks a lot of the noise in the room and allowing for good sound quality for what you're listening to. .
I didn't have any problems adjusting the size; each side can actually be adjusted separately. They can also be folded in, and then snapped back in place. I was a little disappointed these did not come with a pouch. It's just the headphones and a short USB-C charging cable, plus the instructions on a two sided card. They have a really long battery life. The package says 50+ hours, but I have only been using them for 3 days and haven't needed to charge them yet (charged them up when they arrived).
They are black with blue inside the cups. Volume is adjusted on one of the cups, which is where the power button is too. These buttons change other settings, such as the EQ presets. This is my least favorite thing- it's awkward to press both the + and - at the same time and there wasn't a big difference in three presets. If you go online, you can hear a greater difference, but I didn't notice enough when using them to have a preference. It's a small thing, but I would rather have had a separate button for that. I still think these are more than worth the price, even if they didn't have the EQ presets. You can also skip, pause, and answer or decline calls with these buttons. Pairing was no problem and the sound was clear, even with some distance from the device I connected it to. They stay comfortable for hours and don't need to be recharged for a long time.

RGB lighting in a comfortable, reliable keyboard
on October 22, 2020
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
The ROCCAT Vulcan TKL mechanical gaming keyboard is one of the better keyboards I have used. I was able to pair this keyboard with the ROCCAT Elo headset, and the appearance of them makes them seem like a matched set with the RGB lighting, which is adjustable with the function keys on the keyboard, and can be turned off if preferable. I liked them both, and they were clearly meant to be compatible for those who are looking for a set, but if you aren’t looking for a headset to go with it, this keyboard is a great option all on its own. It was strange to me to not have the number pad on the right and when I sit down I still reach for those numbers at first. I’m not using this for anything that I would need to type a lot of numbers, and it’s a fairly quick adjustment to just use the numbers on top, as though you were just typing and not using the ten key pad.
The keyboard is very comfortable to use. It’s not too clicky, with a very smooth and fast response. If I were typing a lot, I could use this keyboard and be comfortable with it; I wouldn’t have to slow down at all, and I can type quickly. I had no trouble with this (and am typing this review with the keyboard). By removing the number pad, it allows for a gaming specific design, with all of the function keys you want for online gaming, and the keys on the side are still there, the directional ones, scrolling, etc. It adds a volume control to the keyboard as well. Its compact size gives more room on the desk for the mouse, without seeming smaller. The keys are still full sized and nothing seems sacrificed. It is really well designed and well made. I’d like to mention again how comfortable it is to use, and it has already replaced my previous mechanical keyboard, which has the number pad but is a little too noisy. This isn’t completely quiet, but not bad. I've only been using this a few days, but for a while each day, and have found no issues with this keyboard at all. It is also reasonably priced for a gaming keyboard, and I would definitely recommend this device.

Great headset by ROCCAT
on October 22, 2020
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
I really liked the ROCCAT Elo Wireless Gaming Headset. They were very comfortable, and the sound quality was great, what you would expect from the ROCCAT and Turtle Beach brands. Apparently, ROCCAT technology is now exclusive to Turtle Beach, and the combination seems to enhance the features of this headset. They are sturdily built to hold up to hours of use. At first glance, they are average sized for gaming headsets; I’ve used larger and heavier ones, although the trend is starting to be towards lighter ones. To me, these fell in the middle range, but not at all to heavy or bulky. As soon as I put them on, they seemed lighter than the first impression while I held them.
Their appearance is attractive, all black except for the lighting on the sides – the ROCCAT name on one side and the cat logo on the other—which cycle through colors; I also have the keyboard with the same effect, the AIMO lighting. I really liked this, and thought it was appealing without being too bright or distracting when I had the lights off. The top part is metal with a padded band underneath that stretches, adjusting to fit around my head, and holding them securely in place. Even when I moved around, they didn’t shift on my head.
The headphones are large enough to fit over my entire ear, not resting on them at all, and insulating against some background noise. It did not block it all out, still can hear myself speak and some other sounds in the room but it muted it some, so I could focus on what I was hearing. I also turned it up a little to block more of it and could hear every little sound in the games (and movies) while I was using these. I liked that the cushions on the ear cups were so comfortable and didn’t seem to put any pressure on the sides of my head or on my glasses. Sometimes I have to remove them after a while, but I was still fine wearing this headset.
These are wireless, with USB receiver to plug into the computer, which also has the logo on it (no getting it mixed up with other receivers, like the ones for my mouse and keyboard, which are almost identical). The mic has clear sound, no issues with others hearing me at all, without static and I was able to speak normally, although you can make some adjustments to personalize this a little. The overall sound quality is great. There are options to use the Superhuman Hearing mode, or the 7.1 surround sound, by using the Swarm app. Again, these are a matter of personal choice about preference; try them out and see which gives you the sound you want while using the headset, and adjustable for different situations. I liked the Superhuman a little better, more comfortable sounding to me.
The battery life is also impressive. I’ve been using these for about four days and have not had to charge them yet. They come with the USB charging cable, but not the AC adapter, which is common these days. It could be plugged into the computer to charge, or into an adapter for faster charging. For the price, you will get a great headset without paying more than you need to for the kind of performance you want for PC gaming. It’s a really great value for a headset that will last for a while.

Bella 4.2 qt manual air fryer
on October 13, 2020
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
This air fryer from the Bella Pro Series is an affordable and reliable kitchen appliance. The basket is large enough for a couple of servings, without overloading it. It has a crisping tray that fits in the basket that helps keep the food off the bottom, ensuring even cooking. Air fryers are a great way to fix foods without adding grease or oil, and this is no exception. There is a wide variety of foods that can be fixed, plus it’s easier— and faster— than baking the same items in an oven. This attractive matte black fryer doesn’t take up a lot of space on the counter. It is considered 'manual' because it has two knobs, one for temperature, and the other for time, no screen or programming options. You can estimate the length of time it will take based on the oven time, if that’s included on the packaging, but be aware that it will be at least a third less time. The timer goes up to 60 minutes, but I haven’t fixed anything that takes more than 20. The chart in the manual is the best place to start, as it includes a selection of common foods, temperatures, and approximate times for cooking. Foods that are already fully cooked take less time than raw foods, the same as with other methods of cooking them, but they usually take less time in the air fryer. Halfway through the expected time, open and shake the contents to keep them cooking evenly; this also lets you see if the food might be done sooner than the selected time.
I like that there is a timer, so if someone walks away and doesn’t come back right away, the fryer shuts off and the food should not be overcooked. That makes this easier for older kids to use with a lot less room for error. I also found that I had to reduce the temperature from what I would have set the oven on, but I did the same with a previous air fryer too, so that wasn’t unexpected here. The temperature in the included chart gave more accurate temperatures than the original packaging. If you open the basket, the cooking stops, and restarts when it is pushed back in, although the timer continues. You can turn the timer to zero when you’re finished if there is time remaining. I like that this is so easy to use, and doesn’t heat up the whole kitchen like using the oven would. The inner basket is not a separate piece; the whole basket with handle (which does not get hot) can be washed along with the crisping tray. The rest of the fryer can be wiped down when it’s cooled off; it can’t be washed, but should not need it.
Everyone in the family can use this (no small children here) and found this fryer simple to operate with good results as far as the crispiness of the foods. I even reheated a grilled cheese sandwich to see if that would work, and it was so much better than microwaving, which would have left it soggy. I didn’t heat it long enough for the cheese to melt out, but it crisped the outside up and heated it through. It works great for fries and chicken straight from the freezer, but there are many options that don’t involve reheating already frozen foods, including handmade fries or chips (regular or sweet potato) and hamburgers. I look forward to trying more foods with this Bella air fryer.

Mechanical keyboard
on October 8, 2020
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
The Logitech K845 is a Mechanical Illuminated keyboard. By going with a mechanical keyboard, there are five key switch options, so the user can select the one that fits their typing preference. The Red Linear is the most commonly used switch, allowing for smooth typing and a fast response time. I can type quickly with this and it feels comfortable to use. The switches and the metal base they sit in are sturdy and seem like this keyboard will last for a long time.
It seems taller than some, but it is more the impression given because it has no extra space around the keys, just what it needs to hold them. It takes up less space on my desk, which is great; there is never enough room for all the peripherals and other items needed for work. My previous keyboard is much bigger, and I like that this gives me the extra space. It is wired, so there’s no need to worry about connection issues. I just plugged it in and it worked right away. While it is not much bigger than a compact keyboard, this one still has full size keys and the ten key number pad on the side, with feet that can be used to lift it a little. It has little pads that seem to grip the desk. This enables faster typing because it won’t slide around.
A feature that is for show rather than functionality is the illumination. It doesn't help me type any faster, but I like the option for backlit keys. The F12 function key lets you choose between five different backlighting patterns, and the F1 and F2 can lower or increase the brightness of the lighting. It doesn’t have other colors, but it’s nice to have a little fun with the illumination, especially if I’m using it in a lower light setting. The function keys can be used for other things, like watching videos or listening to music.
I’d say this is 4.5 stars, it’s solidly built and does what it’s meant to, but a little clicky for me. I would probably get the Brown Tactile Switch version of the K845 if I had it to do differently, as the description says it’s quieter. My recommendation is to think about (and read about) which one fits you, and select the switch based on that. It’s light on frills and additional features, but I like that it is illuminated, doesn’t take up a lot of space, and is solidly made.

Bose sound in sport earbuds
on September 29, 2020
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
These have the build and sound quality associated with the Bose name, with features that allow for use while exercising. They stay securely in place in the ear, without needing an ear hook. The earpieces fit snugly at the opening of the ear canal, while the side tucks into curves of the inner cup of the ear. It doesn't shift once it's in place until you're ready to remove it. It remains comfortable throughout the day, with soft silicone rather than hard plastic surfaces, yet doesn't move, enabling the wearer to exercise without worrying the earbuds will fall out while in motion. They don't have noise cancellation, but that's not expected if you'll need to be aware of surroundings when exercising outdoors, although they blocked out some of the sound because of the way they fit. Another feature that goes along with this is that they can withstand exposure to sweat and rain, rated IPX4. They are not waterproof and should not be submerged in water (not the case either) but should hold up to a regular workout in or outside, and during regular daytime activities.
There are no buttons, but they have what is called capacitive touch interface on the outside surface of each earbud, so you can double tap on the right one to pause what is playing or answer a call, or tap and hold to skip a call. The left one can be programmed through the app.
The Bose Music app, available through Google Play for Android devices (also compatible with Apple), guides through setup including connecting (although I had already connected through the phone, and didn't need the assistance) and connecting to the music apps used on the phone, like Spotify and Prime music. In settings, you can select the option for the left earbud; the default is for battery life, but I chose another option to fit my preference. There isn't a lot to the app, as the earbuds automatically begin to connect to the device when the storage case is open after the initial set up.
They have about five hours of battery life and can be charged twice more in the case, or a quick charge that will give you two hours of use. The case holds its charge well, and didn't need to be charged right away, and still had more than half their charge after two days. When the right one is removed, it automatically pauses, no need to push a button on the phone. That's new for me, and convenient. You can't listen to just the left one. Most earbuds are like this, from less expensive to more expensive, and it's frustrating to me. I'd like to listen to one, then switch it out for the other fully charged one, so it will last me all day, allowing me to go from one activity to the next and only switch once. I don't know why most earbuds are right side dominant like this. I know a lot of people who wear one earbud or other bluetooth device for long periods, and this is an inconvenience that most devices, including this one, don't address. Because I haven't found a pair that lets me do that, I'm not holding it against these, but pointing it out for users new to products like this. You'll either wear both or just the right. The best use would be if you intend to use them as a set.
When using as a pair, the sound is incredible, just what I expected and better than any previous set of earbuds I've used before. It still sounds really good with just the right, but you miss out on the full experience. Apparently the technology in these automatically adjusts bass, treble, and midrange for the user, providing what the manufacturer calls lifelike sound. This enhances the listening experience, regardless of whether you're listening to music, an audiobook or other recording, or a phone call. The microphones are supposed to be able to focus on your voice during a call, while minimizing background noises. When I made or received calls, they were very clear, and the people I spoke to commented on how clearer I sounded than with my usual bluetooth earpiece. The built-in antennas also allow you to move away from your phone without losing any sound quality, which is especially important on calls, to be able to move around without static or fading out. I definitely recommend these earbuds, for use during all sorts of activities, especially those where you need them to stay securely in place for the duration.

Multicooker to fix food quickly
on September 22, 2020
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
This is not my mother's pressure cooker, and very different from the traditional slow cooker I associate with the Crock Pot brand. I do have a lunch warmer, and the design reminds me more of that, with its metal liner (not the heavy 'crockery' liner that's used with slow cookers. This liner is non-stick, which makes clean up easy, or wiping it out quickly to move to the next stage of the cooking process. You can use multiple functions in one recipe to prepare the whole meal, cooking it faster than you could bake it.
It has the option for slow cooking, and delaying the start time, so food is ready when you need it. It can brown/saute, steam, and pressure cook. Because of the way food is prepared, you can fix healthy meals for a family, especially given the 6 quart size of the cooker.
I didn't really like the recipe book. I'm going to look online for more recipes, and hope that'll give me more choices that fit what my family and I will eat. The beginner recipes were more complicated than I expected, as I have not used a pressure cooker before. Multiple recipes called for accessories not included with the Multicooker, like a 7 inch cake pan, two different 5 and a half inch trivets, and silicone egg pods- several in the beginner recipes. I don't want to buy accessories as I'm starting to use this appliance; that's something to try later, after I've gotten accustomed to it. And I'm not even sure what baking paper is.
Except for the minor issues I had with the recipes, I really enjoyed this Crock Pot cooker. I did try several recipes, especially the eggs, with instructions for hard, medium, and soft boiled eggs- this I really appreciated. I also enjoyed the beef stew and the beef and broccoli with rice, full of flavor without overcooking the beef. It's great to fix more meals like this. It can even fix desserts too. The rice did turn out perfect, and I couldn't believe that it 'baked' potatoes so quickly, without heating up the whole kitchen, like it would have if I used the oven instead.
I found the Owner's manual more interesting and informative than the recipe book, although the illustrations inspired me to try some new things and new ways of fixing familiar ones. The manual has the basics like safety information and how to operate and maintain the cooker. It also had a lot of tips and even how to steam or pressure cook basic foods, such as certain vegetables and meats. I really like the versatility of this multicooker, which has the capability of traditional slow cooking, steaming, and pressure cooking, but allows for combinations of functions so owners can prepare more in one appliance, and even additional functions, like the brown/sauté setting as well, so you don't have to turn the stove or oven on at all.

Keurig with new features

The K-Supreme has some features I haven't seen in other Keurigs I've used. The multistream technology enhances the flavor of each cup, and can be combined with the 'strong' brew option for a bolder cup of coffee. The reservoir holds a little more than two quarts of water, with a light that blinks to notify when it needs to be refilled. I like that I can choose from 4 different cup sizes, and a brew over ice option to make my own iced coffee. It's easy to use; it turns on when the top is lifted and turns off five minutes after use. That's an important feature. A lot of coffee makers have an auto shut off after an hour or more, which doesn't apply here since each cup brews fresh. Another unnecessary feature is the ability to program it. It brews so quickly that there's no need.
The reservoir can be placed on the side or the back, part of its space saving design. It's so slim, especially with the tank behind, that it takes up less space than you might think, narrower than my old Keurig and other drip coffee makers.
It can accommodate a travel mug too. This is a really well designed single cup coffee maker that seems like it will last a long time. The cord is deliberately short for safety, but a longer cord can be purchased if it is needed. Another optional purchase is a refillable k-cup, but only the newer version. I found a couple of sites that have it, but it's important to make sure it's the compatible one, so it won't mess up the coffeemaker. Because this one puts 5 holes in the top and the My kcup for this has the extra holes in the top. If you're concerned about the cost of kcups, or the impact on the environment of throwing away all the used kcups, the reusable kcup resolves that issue, while still allowing you to enjoy a great cup of fresh brewed coffee. I highly recommend this Keurig coffeemaker.
