Internet security plus PC improvement
on October 29, 2019

I remember when AVG offered a free antivirus software download, which did a surprisingly good job of protecting your computer, without causing more problems than it helped with. I haven't used AVG in years, and have tried several different products that offer virus protection over the past few years. It seems harder than ever to keep your devices safe from attacks, so a reliable product that thoroughly protects AND doesn't slow the computer down too much is so important.
I was pleased to find this item has definitely improved over the years, offering a lot of features I will use. It downloaded quickly, and setup was easy. I set up an AVG account, put in my product code, and went from there. Installation gives you the internet security part and a secure browser; then it prompts you to download additional software. The download, installation, and first scan took less than expected- and less time than most I've tried. After the scan, it lets you know about threats, but also other risks, such as documents that need attention. It protects your personal info and passwords, and even your webcam from being hacked. I haven't had it long, but have already seen improvement in performance and security with my laptop.
As far as the other included features, I do like the secure browser that comes with it, but the best additional item is the Tune up software. After running that and fixing as recommended (mostly), I did find the computer ran faster and smoother. It stopped a few products from booting when the computer starts, which helps it to get to the desktop faster, and put some other to sleep, until I open them again. It dealt with other issues- duplicate and temporary files, broken links, etc. I mostly followed suggestions but really liked that I could choose which parts I wanted to leave alone. It's not all or nothing, and I know that some things I don't want to change, or remove, until a later date. It also includes VPN for additional security.
Two things caught my attention: it doesn't uninstall other virus software. Usually the new one tells you that you have to uninstall the competing program, and replace it with the new one, unless it's just a newer version of the same. Then it might work with it. This is deliberate, since this product can be used along with other options, for even more protection for your computer. This allows users to keep and use the parts they like from different programs. I like this.
The other thing, which is definitely a con for me- it tries to sell you more products. I just got this, and don't see a point in buying more before I've tried this one out. And it's not a free item, so why immediately hit me with other stuff that I 'must' have to fix and improve my computer. That's why I'm using this product, which already has extras.
Overall, it's a great, reliable product and I recommend it. It works on multiple devices, and protects users well. The additional downloads were also an improvement on other brands I've tried, due to the efficiency of the results with my computer.

Gaming mouse

This mouse would be a great mouse for any user. It's comfortable in the hand, fitting at just right angle, and it's a good size. The buttons are very responsive, and the response on the computer are so quick. It's easy to grip the mouse, even for long periods, without discomfort.
It has the usual left and right click buttons, a scrolling button with a couple of options, and three more buttons- one on top behind the others, and two on the side. A simple click with your thumb on one of these, and the preset options are to go forward and back in the browser. These buttons can be programmed to do other functions, as the user prefers. The feel of all of the buttons, and the mouse in general, is very comfortable and easy to use. It's sensitive enough without inaccuracies. And it has a sturdy feel in your hand, like it will hold up to a lot of use.
The lighting is amazing. The Roccat symbol and scroll light up in changing colors. It's AIMO, a next level technology that goes beyond the usual options for mice, in what Roccat refers to as 'living light'. Users can program this for different levels of brightness, as well as changing to other patterns.
The included start up guide gives you the website, and that's where you can download Swarm, the companion software for Roccat devices. This is where you can find all sorts of options for the mouse. Users can adjust the lighting, set up multiple profiles, record macros for specific games or software, change the function of the buttons, and more. To me, it was the right amount of buttons, and I like the size and positioning of the side buttons.
This corded mouse responds so quickly that it gives you the advantage in games, especially where the speed of the mouse can make such a difference in beating your opponents- that fraction of a second matters and the designers of this mouse know the importance and have succeeded beyond expectations with this mouse. You won't be disappointed with this one. I couldn't find anything I didn't like. For gameplay, I need to know the mouse isn't going to let me down, and this one performed beautifully in keeping up with actions in the game.

Best Crockpot
on October 13, 2019
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
This is the best crockpot I've used. It's larger, and oval, instead of round, which makes it easier for me to layer the food for even cooking. I wanted a larger one to hold more, and this 7 quart slow cooker does that. I had no trouble fitting a large pot roast with plenty of vegetables, which is one of the main reasons I wanted a newer Crockpot.
I've used it for a few dinners and they turned out well. It has a timer, not just low and high, but you can program it to cook for a set amount of time on either low or high. The default for low is eight hours, but this is easily adjusted up or down. It can be set for a short cooking time, or all day, from as little as thirty minutes and up to 20 hours. It includes several recipes in the guide that comes with it, as well as recommended times for how long it should take on low or high. Along with this guide, more recipes can be found online.
One of the best features is the option to keep the food warm. When the timer has ended, the Crockpot automatically keeps the food on the 'warm' setting until the power button is used, or time runs out. I was also able to put it back on warm without having to restart the cooking cycle.
The first time I used it, I set the timer to end shortly after I expected to return home. But then I was delayed, arriving home well past the expected time, and the food was still done perfectly, and at a temperature for serving.
I really enjoyed the foods cooked in this, as well as the ease of setting the timer for the desired cook time, and the warm setting. It's also easy to clean the liner and lid. It looks good and works great. I love this Crockpot.

Lunata travel styler
on October 11, 2019

Just pulling it out of the package, it's impressive. The box opens up to show the bag containing all the parts of the styler, in an attractive, black travel case with the Lunata logo on it in gold. It looks like it will protect it while traveling as well as keep it all together. This product is really well made and designed, and seems like it will last a long time.
This comes with the case, the styler, the charging cord, a silicone sleeve, a stand, and an 'world use adapter', which allows for charging in multiple countries. The styler is black with gold plates, and has a nice feel to it. Using it is easy. The instruction manual includes basic information on safety and maintaining the device, but not really on use. Because this is meant for travel, not the main styling tool, the expectation is that if you have this, you already know how to use one, and are in the habit of styling your hair with similar tools. Even though it's meant for touch ups or styling away from home, it does a such a great job of straightening or putting in loose curls in a short time. It recommends that you have hair that's already styled, but it would still work if you were on a trip and it's the only tool you brought along.
It is very easy to get started. Push the button to turn on, set the temperature, and it heats up quickly to the selected temperature. For me, it reached that temperature faster than the time it said it would take. Flip the switch to unlock it, and then start using. It took minutes for me to straighten my hair. Mine isn't really long, so it would have taken longer with more hair to manage. I also put in some loose curls, and it worked well for that too. I put it in the sleeve while it was still hot, which is a really nice option. I didn't want to sit the styler down without it. I also have used the base in addition, but like that I can put the sleeve on for taking it with me in my bag, and keeping it . I found nothing to dislike about any part of this item, or the process of using it.

More than a blender
on October 11, 2019
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty

At my house, using a blender means milkshakes, with the occasional smoothie or frozen drink, although it's capable of a variety of recipes. This blender does these and so much more. It's powerful enough to crush ice and blend ingredients. It performs well, and exceeds expectations for what I want from a blender.
This blender offers a whole new set of features, beyond what I would expect to be able to do with a blender. It comes with more presets than any blender I've used before, and this makes it even easier to work with. I had no issues with figuring them out, since it comes with a user guide, and a recipe book to get you started.
Instructions are given on how to layer ingredients for best results, and step by step directions. The included recipe book offers a bunch of recipes for cold drinks, and even ice cream. But it also has sauces, dips, smooth soups, like tomato, and hearty soups, and even a general guide on making your own mixtures, such as trying your own variation for a smooth or hearty soup. My favorite is the homemade chicken noodle soup. It's so easy, just put the ingredients in, everything but the noodles, and this blender does all the work. It mixes and cooks- just 30 minutes of cooking time! Noodles are added in near the end to prevent them from getting overcooked. It was really good, and everything was thoroughly cooked. I will be using this recipe again. I did not expect to be making soup with a blender.
It's not a large portion, so it wouldn't work if you want leftovers, or for a crowd, but it makes enough for people who want a quick and easy way to make soup. It doesn't require stirring (it does that for you) or watching. You can come home, throw everything in, hit the preset for that recipe, and come back when it's done, or almost done, for adding in additional ingredients. This is great for saving time after a long day. I also found more recipes online.
The only possible downside I noticed, which isn't a problem so far, is that the pitcher cannot be disassembled or put in the dishwasher. Because of the heating element built into the base, it cannot be submerged in water. It has a Clean Cycle that cleans the inside of the pitcher. Users should only have to rinse, using the cleaning brush to remove anything that might remain after it cleans itself. I didn't have any problems with this; it came clean without extra effort for me. It also meant I didn't have to worry about the blades, since they remained attached, and cleaned during the cycle. This might not even be an problem, if it continues to clean as it designed to do. It's too early to tell, but I'm mentioning it, since most blenders do come apart for cleaning. It might be a good thing, less time and work to clean it. The cord is too short, but I have the same problem with my other blender, so I can't really fault this one for that issue.
Overall I'm impressed. It describes itself as the evolution of the blender, and that's a fair description. Ninja has made another versatile product that I am looking forward to trying out more recipes with.

Good remote for smart devices
on September 25, 2019
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
When I went online for more information on device compatibility, I found a lot of comparisons to other devices, including a Logitech device. This one doesn't fall short from its competitors, although I didn't have the opportunity to compare them side by side. I will also say this is a device that lives up to most of what it is meant to do, including offering an advanced and more than capable Smart Remote for a wide range of users. It does require the use of the app, but so many devices either require this, or have limited functionality without the app.
Most devices above a certain price point assume that the consumer has a smart phone capable of doing a lot more than calls and social media. We’ve become people who do a lot with our indispensable phones, so having to use an app to set up this remote was not a surprise. I think that having a companion app aids in setting up the device, without a lot of reading; many people want the shorter, easier way to get started, and the app does so much of the work for you. The Sevenhugs app takes you through the setup, which makes it very easy to get started. It can control so many devices, it almost eliminates the need for a bunch of remotes. You certainly won’t need separate remotes for each item.
When unboxed, the remote should be charged up using the included charging base and cable. Then it prompted to update software before using, not unexpected for a new device. From there, the app will get you started. It is most useful for those people with a lot of ‘smart’ devices, such as smart plugs and lights, but can also work with older infrared devices. I was a little surprised that it connected to my TV so easily, as it’s an older model which has given me trouble with universal remotes and other peripherals in the past; it immediately connected and worked with the TV—there’s one remote I’ll be happy to replace with my new smart remote! It took a little longer to connect with my bluray player, and I missed when it did work, and had to go back (an issue with my player responding slowly, and not the remote). I wasn’t really expecting it to work for both of these, and was pleasantly surprised that it did. I mostly got it to work with the smart plugs I have, and hadn’t really been using to their full capability. This remote allows for greater control with those, and the items plugged into them. I don’t know if Spotify Premium is a requirement; it seems like it was, since it was one of the first things that the app wanted to set up. It does work for that service, which means I can play the music with a remote, something I wasn't able to do before the remote.
I had a little trouble with getting used to the remote, and it is an adjustment to using traditional remotes. I gave it 4 stars for this reason. It’s such a cool little gadget that I’m having a lot of fun with, but I will not be getting rid of all my remotes. My Roku and bluray remotes are still going to get some use, as I can push some of the buttons by touch alone, and I like that option. Whether watching with the light off, or just while multitasking, the Sevenhugs remote doesn’t allow for touch alone, or that quick of a response. I have to focus on the remote, to make sure I swipe the right way, or I'm directing the right device (since I'm usually using multiple at the same time) and sometimes that just isn’t going to work for me. I think some other people will feel the same way, especially since people do get used to doing certain things without looking at their hands, or the remote/controller they’re holding. I don’t know what to suggest to improve that, since I’m not sure that is a feature that can be added. I’m not visually impaired, but it seems like this wouldn’t work for anyone who can’t see the remote clearly, or who does not want to use an app on their phone. I still would recommend this device for most users. It’s a really nice remote, and the prices on these have reduced with some recent models, making them more affordable, especially when you consider how much they are capable of doing.

Great printer for the office or home office
on August 27, 2019
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
This HP printer is great for home or office use, since it prints a lot of pages quickly, in crisp, clear print quality. It would also work well for students, for the same reason. Very reliable. Not meant to be a photo printer. It does allow to choose between document and photo when you print, so you could try photo paper and print a black and white picture, but it's really not for that purpose. It can only print 2 sided if you manually flip the paper and print on the back.
It's primarily designed for business use, and it exceeds expectations. This printer is compatible with multiple devices and operating systems, many versions of Windows, iOS, Android, etc. I quickly downloaded the HP Smart app, which prompted me to add the HP printer plugin. It searched for and found the printer already connected to the network. Then I was able to print right from my phone- printing from downloaded files, pictures, and from email. All of these showed great print quality. And it prints so quickly, there's no hesitation. The specs say 40 pages per minute, and this seems to support that claim. It was very easy to connect to the printer, and the options were right there in the app. Whether on the computer or mobile device, it tells you to go to the website. This prompts downloading of the app on your mobile device, and software on the computer. There isn't much to set up, not complicated, allowing me to get right to printing. For me, I need something that I can print from my desk, but also from my phone, if I worked from home or have notes from a meeting to print out.
It has two trays for paper, one holds 100 pages, the other 250, and can handle different kinds of paper, and smaller sizes, but can print letter and legal size documents. I set it up so I can leave 1 kind of paper in the drawer, but print from regular paper by just selecting the other tray. It's versatile, and convenient, so I don't have to keep adding or changing paper. At the back of the printer is a place for the power cord, as well as ports for the ethernet cable, for connecting another device USB 2.0 cable, and for a USB flash drive. These are not included in the box. I didn't expect a flash drive, but was surprised it didn't have the cable, since these are inexpensive. It's a minor point, since it's not required to use the printer. An ethernet cable is required, as this printer cannot connect wirelessly, and most people will want that connectivity to their network. It's especially important if you're using a mobile devices to print from.
It was heavier than I expected, but sturdy and compact. This is not a portable device, but one for keeping in one spot. It doesn't take up much space on my desk, and since I don't need to connect a bunch of cords, it doesn't clutter the space.
It's designed to only use an HP cartridge, with one of their chips in it. Other brands without the HP chip will probably not work in this printer, so it limits you to the HP cartridge. If the other cartridge does work, it might not work again the next time. This means you can't shop around for less expensive cartridges, but it does offer a higher level of security, which is the real purpose of the chip. It focuses on maintaining the security of the user's information as a trade-off, something many users might appreciate enough to overlook this limitation.
Pros: fast, reliable, print quality, high volume output, 1500 pages per cartridge, compact, easy to set up and use.
Cons (for some): limited to HP cartidges, not wireless, no color
Overall it's a great, reliable printer, which I expect to use for a long time.

Lightweight noise cancelling headphones
on July 24, 2019
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
There are so many options for headphones, and they all seem to offer more features than ever, but I have to say I recommend these for several reasons. They pair quickly, using the NFC technology, if your phone supports it, but almost as quickly without it. These are sleek, but feel well constructed, like they will hold up for a long time.
They are very lightweight, with plenty of cushioning on the band and ear cups. The left has the power button, and a custom button that's for ambient control, but can be used for either Google Assistant or Alexa. Downloading the app (there's always an app) allows this to be activated, but has options for adjusting sound. Given that these are named XB, extra bass, that's an attractive feature for many users. But I actually preferred getting to adjust the sound based on what I'm listening to, and changing easily in the app when I listen to something else. Audiobooks sound even better with these, and music sounds great too.
Noise cancellation is what a lot of users will expect, and these do not disappoint. With the touch of a button, ambient sound can be reintroduced, or other adjustments to sound quality. These even make some adjustments on their own, also viewable in the app.
These are comfortable and foldable for storage in the soft bag that comes with these headphones, along with the USB C charging cable and headphone cable. They have very long battery life, and lasted me for days without recharging. There's a built-in microphone for calls or talking to Alexa or Google, and touch controls on the right ear cup. Since it was my first time using this, it took a minute to get used to it, but I really liked having this feature, literally at my fingertips. If you're wanting great headphones with noise cancellation for under $300, give these a try.

Outstanding Dashcam
on July 19, 2019
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
This dashcam (322GW model) by Nextbase is in the middle of their available products, not the most or least expensive, and is reasonably priced for the quality of this device. It's easy to get started and has additional features to explore when you're not driving. Once it's set up, there are several automatic controls that make it unnecessary to do more than let it work while the vehicle is in motion.
When turning it on for the first time, the prompts on the screen guide you through the initial settings- language, time zone, units of speed (mph or km), date, etc. Then it lets you know to install the app on your phone, and connect to the dashcam. This connection allows more features to be activated.
One of these is the Emergency SOS. With the dashcam and phone connected, it's activated through the app. The user adds their personal information, along with medical conditions, allergies, medications, and blood type. If an accident occurs, the dashcam can detect this and starts a countdown. If it isn't cancelled, because the driver is unable to and cannot call for help, it will contact emergency responders to assist. This seemed like a great addition to this device. There would be video, and information a first responder might need in the app.
Additional features include parking mode, where the camera will start to record if it detects movement of the vehicle, even if the car is still off, useful if something happens to the car when the driver is away, and a screen saver that can show the rate of speed. I turned on cruise control in my car, and the speed matches, so it's accurate in measuring that.
You can edit the videos on the dashcam screen, or transfer them and edit them there, such as on a computer. The videos are crisp and clear, HD quality and settings are adjustable between 1080 & 720. Duration of each video is preset by the user, so you can keep them very short or have them a few minutes long.
A micro SD card is required. Nextbase has their own cards available, but it doesn't have to be that brand, as long as it's a recognized brand and its speed is compatible, at least class 10, although U3 is recommended, with plenty of room for storing videos. A 32GB holds about 240 minutes, and 64GB about 480. I was impressed with this dashcam and look forward to continuing to explore its features.

Multidirectional antenna
on July 9, 2019
Posted by: MrAnubisKitty
from High Point, NC, USA
If you're looking for a way to get local channels without a monthly fee, this is a great way to get HD channels. I've tried other antennas before with little success. I was able to get about two channels, and they didn't always come in regularly. With this antenna, I did not have that problem.
The first thing that was different with this one, is that it tells you to download the app on your phone. The purpose of this app is to find the best signal, which lets you know the best places to install the antenna. This way you'll have access to the most channels available. It mentions being multidirectional, which means you don't have to adjust it for different channels.
Set up is very easy. Once you've determined where to put the antenna, it can be mounted to a window or wall with the included double-sided mounting stickers. It takes no time to put it up, connect the coaxial cable to the TV, plug it in, and start the search for channels. It's so quick and easy to install and start using.
This antenna brought in 23 channels, although some aren't channels we'll watch, and not all of them stayed clear all the time. I don't think that's a problem with the antenna, since it's a lot more channels than I've ever gotten without cable or satellite, and it includes all the local channels that we will actually watch. The picture is great, and best of all, they're consistently clear.
This device comes with an amplifier as part of the antenna, and it's not removable. The cord was a little short, which was the only issue I had. The signal from the side window was better, but the cord wasn't long enough to plug it in and connect to the TV. Since you can't separate the amplifier, which requires a plug, you'll have to make sure it's close to the TV. Also, it recommends hanging it up a little, and the short cord limits placement a little. It was a minor inconvenience, but might be more of a problem for some users. I still recommend this as a way to 'cut the cord' and get the local channels you want, plus some you might not realize are available in your area.
