Excellent Gaming Laptop
on October 7, 2019

Performance (RTX 2070 Max-Q and i7-9750H model):
The M17 R2 can run any game with the highest graphical settings at 60fps or more, whether it's a graphically-demanding game like Apex Legends or Forza Horizon 4, or a smaller game like Rocket League or Overwatch. Running apps like Discord or Chrome on a second display in the background doesn't affect game performance at all. Loading times and boot up speeds are quick. Recording the screen while gaming doesn't affect performance. Out of the box games don't perform as well as they could; there's a couple of config changes that need to be done in the Alienware Command Center to allow games to run on full power.
Peripherals:
The keyboard has a very durable feel and is nice and clicky, definitely one of the best keyboards I've seen on a laptop. It includes a number pad, a button to quickly turn on and off the RGB lighting, and 4 extra programmable keys. Editing the RGB keyboard lights in the Alienware Command Center on the laptop peripherals (keyboard, Alienware logo on the back of the screen, etc.) is a little confusing. The mouse pad is closer to the left side of the laptop so I find myself brushing my palm against it when I'm playing games using the WASD keys, moving my camera or my cursor around when I don't want to. Otherwise, the mouse pad has a very smooth and clicky feel and is a decent, somewhat big size.
Features:
The built-in speakers have a good sound to them, though the placement of them isn't too convenient. They're placed on the edge of the keyboard facing about 45 degrees down. I think they would've been better if placed above the keyboard under the display near where the power button is. The M17 R2 has 3 USB ports, an AUX audio out and microphone port, an Ethernet port, an HDMI out, and a thunderbolt for more display options besides HDMI. The HDMI is all I need for running an extra display out for some more screen space for things like Discord or Chrome. The resolution of the built-in camera is okay, though I don't use it often so it's not much of a problem for me. Alienware included a built-in eye tracker into the bottom of the display. I most-likely won't be using it much either. It's just a nice extra feature. Personally, I would've switched the eye tracker out for a Windows Hello compatible camera, that way I won't have to punch in a password every time I need to unlock the computer, I can just look into the camera.
Battery, heat, and noise:
The battery life of the M17 R2 is fairly average. It's good for streaming video or listening to music for a couple of hours, but once you start gaming on the battery, it drains fairly quickly. You will want to plug it in if you're playing a very graphically demanding game. Playing demanding games while plugged in heats the laptop up pretty easily. The noise of the fans is a little louder than other notebooks. If you don't mind the noise, it'll be easy to ignore. If you're a little more sensitive, just put on some headphones or turn the game volume up and you should be good to go.
Other notes:
The weight of the laptop is average, weighing almost 6 pounds. Charging doesn't take too long when the laptop is idle, though while playing games it may run a bit slower. The 1080p 144hz model works great for games. I don't need a bigger resolution, but a faster refresh rate is a nice touch. The screen overall is vibrant and clear.
Overall, the Alienware M17 R2 is a great gaming laptop for the price.

Good Value Earbuds
on July 2, 2019

The JLAB JBUDS Air Executive earbuds are good set of earbuds for the money. Their diminutive size and black color allow for them to be very inconspicuous when in ear.
Pairing is super easy. Charging is fast and has performed as advertised for me. Having all of the controls available as taps seems like it should be nice, but I ran into periodic issues with my taps being misread as a different function. To be honest, it could have been me not hitting the surface well.
Sound quality was good. Highs are crisp and voices are clear. The EQ settings allow for some adjustment, though the Bass Boost mode seemed a bit too much. Call audio was also clear on both sides of the call. One note here: I tested these on 2 different phones: A Pixel XL and a Sony Xperia XZ2. Everything sounded find on the Sony, but on the Pixel, the volume was very low. Not sure why; haven’t had an issue with any other BT headphones that I’ve used with the device. Could have been something I set funny on the Pixel, but I haven’t found it yet.
A couple of other points: The nesting charging cord on the pod is a nice feature meaning you don’t need to carry and additional cord with you. And the ear fitment is comfortable, secure, and very customizable with the included 4 sizes of ear tips.
Overall, the JLAB JBUDS Air Executive are not only good earbuds, but moreover, and excellent value.

Excellent Quality Monitor
on June 29, 2019

Right out of the gate, let me just state, I’m no videophile. I can’t get into a discussion on nits or color gamut. I’m also not a hard-core gamer worried about high refresh rates. What I am is just a guy who uses his computer everyday for...computing...and I only do casual photo and video editing. So, with all of that said, I offer my review of the LG 27UL600 monitor.
Out of the box, the monitor goes together quickly and easily. The stand comes in 2 pieces and assembles fast with a single thumbscrew. After that you will need a phillips screwdriver to attach the stand to the monitor with 2 screws. This would have been a little nicer if the entire process was toolless, but its not the end of the word either. Once assembled, the stand only offers tilt adjustment; there is no adjustment for height.
The back of the monitor offers 2 HDMI ports, 1 DisplayPort, 1 3.5mm headphone/speaker jack, and the power connector. Also included in the box is 1 HDMI cable, 1 DisplayPort cable, and the AC brick. All cables are white to go with the white on the back of the monitor. And on the front, the anti-glare coating is nice and the bezels are indeed very thin.
The monitor powers on quickly. Using the power button/control nub located under the center LG logo, the on-screen display (OSD) is easy to understand and navigate. Inputs can be quickly and easily toggled. There are a wide range of picture modes available. Images are crisp, blacks are deep (depending on the settings) , there is plenty of brightness, and there were no dead pixels.
One final observation: Both of my computers changed their default sound device to go through the monitor on the first use. There are no on-board speakers; this only works if you plug speakers or headphones into the 3.5mm jack in the back. I can see where this might be a nice feature for some folks, but for the way I have my workspace setup, I needed to go into the sound settings on both computers and change this back.
All in all, it’s a very good monitor that fits my needs well.

Excellent Premium 2-in-1 Laptop
on June 17, 2019

The Dell Inspiron 15 7000-series laptop is an excellent premium 2-in-1 laptop.
Starting out, the overall construction and design is top-end. The aluminum chassis is very sleek and feels solidly built while not being overly heavy. The convertible screen hinge has just the right amount of resistance to it with no slop. The black anodized finish is attractive, though it is a fingerprint magnet. The back-lit keyboard, which features a full keypad, is chicklet style but has a good feel to it. The touch pad is large and very nice to work with. And the Dell pen stores magnetically in the screen hinge, which feels very secure and keeps the pen easily accessible.
Regarding performance: Once fully setup, boot time (cold to login) has been very speedy (less than 25sec). App loading and switching is also very fast. Wifi range has been excellent; better than any other laptop in my home. The 4k screen is beautiful: Colors are vibrant and images crisp with plenty of brightness and excellent viewing angles. The touchscreen is very responsive to both finger and pen input. The stereo speakers are very clear and offer plenty of volume, though without much bass. Battery life has been good, with over 8 hours of mixed usage. And the unit is very quiet with minimal fan noise.
Just a few other points:
- There is minimal Dell software-bloat, which is nice.
- The SD card reader is strictly Micro SD
- There is NO Ethernet port (despite the BB description saying there is)
- The combo power button/fingerprint reader is not marked (top-right key on the keypad). Finding it the first time took longer than it should have.
- I haven't yet found a single instance where the pen buttons work. Even within tablet mode or apps like the Sketchpad
All in all, the Dell Inspiron 15 is an excellent laptop.

The JVC HA ENR15 Gumy Sport headphones are a good set of headphones for the price.
Sound quality is ok. Highs are crisp and voices are clear. They are a little light on bass, though. The earbuds feel sturdy and are listed as being "sweat-proof". They fit comfortably in my ears and felt very secure. The cord seems a little thin, though I've had no problems with it. The remote/microphone feels plasticy and seems situated a bit too high on the cord for my tastes.
Included with the purchase is a larger set of earpieces and a set of instructions explaining the remote's functionality.
All in all, these headphones are a perfectly serviceable set inexpensive sport headphones.

The Belkin multimedia hub offers great expandability to your laptop in a well-built easy to use package.
The metal body houses an HDMI port, 2 USB-A ports, 1 USB-C port, an SD port, and a network port.
Installation is easily accomplished simply by plugging the USB-C tail into your laptop. Nothing else to install or configure.
That said, make sure that your laptop has USB-C Thunderbolt in order to use the HDMI port. This type of port will feature the lightning bolt icon and not the USB icon. Without this feature, everything but the HDMI port will work, as is the case with my HP Envy laptop.
All in all, great little device that is super easy to use and very helpful.

Excellent Fitness Smartwatch
on March 24, 2019
Posted by: Beuge
from Newark
The Galaxy Watch Active is a great fitness-oriented smartwatch that looks as good as it performs.
To start, the watch is very simple yet attractive. The smaller 40mm metal body is more minimalist than the usual standard Galaxy Watch as it lacks the rotating bezel. However, this plays well to its focus on fitness. The screen is bright and beautiful and the synthetic rubber band is soft and generally comfortable. Though, the way the excess band tucks inside the band through a slot rather than using a loop can be tricky.
Setup was fairly quick and easy. Apps and menus are easy to access and understand and there is plenty of customization options. I paired the watch to a Galaxy S9 which was painless. There were a few extra apps that needed to be installed on the phone and a lot of permissions to grant, but this all made sense in the context of how the watch's functionality.
The watch also has performed well. The screen generally responds quickly, steps are tracked accurately, and battery life has lasted comfortably through a full day of usage. Every once in a while, the screen might lag or notifications may be a little delayed, but the issue isn't chronic.
All in all, the Galaxy Watch Active is a great smartwatch.

Affordable home-based hair removal

The Conair Lumilisse is lightweight and fairly portable. The housing is plastic and seems sturdy enough. The wall power adapter is fairly large, but the cord is plenty long, at about 5ft. And the face and body attachments are easily interchangeable. The Xenon bulb, while rated for 300,000 flashes, does not seem to be replaceable. So don’t drop the unit.
Regarding use, I highly encourage you to take your time and read the detailed and easy to follow directions. This is not something you can just unpack and start treatments. Gauge your skin color, set your power levels, then test an area of your skin and wait the prescribed 48 hours to see you react.
Treatments can be felt but are not painful, even at the increased power levels. Its akin to a burst of warmth. The treatment area is small, so covering larger areas can take time. And reaching areas such as your back may need a second set of hands.
For me, my light skin and dark hair is an optimal combination and I have seen slowed regrowth in the treatment areas. But suitability for use and results will vary depending on your skin tone, hair color, and commitment to follow-up sessions.
Note that there is no storage case included so keeping the box for storage is a good idea.

Excellent Premium Blender
on November 27, 2018
Posted by: Beuge
from Delaware
The Ninja Blender DUO with FreshVac is a solidly built, versatile, premium blender that is easy to operate and performs fantastically.
Upon unboxing, everything feels solid and well built. Much of the construction is plastic, including the 72oz pitcher, but none of it feels cheap. And the water-proof screen is a proper touch screen and not a flexible membrane, so it should last without fading or cracking.
Assembly is logical and easy to follow with the included instructions. Lids and hatches close tightly and easily and vessels engage in the base smoothly and positively. Batteries for the FreshVac pump are also included, which is a nice touch.
Once a vessel is mounted to the base, the base detects the vessel and provides you with applicable Auto iQ modes (‘Smoothie’, ‘Puree’, ‘Extract’, etc). The IQ modes adjust speed, power, and time and have seemed to work well. If those modes don’t fit your application, manual ‘High’, ‘Low’, and ‘Pulse’ modes are still available. The 1400 watt motor has made quick work of anything that I’ve thrown at it so far with very smooth results. And it is not overly loud, especially given its power.
The FreshVac pump works quickly and quietly, pulling a vacuum on either the 72oz pitcher or 20oz cups. While I’ll need to test it more over the long term, it does at least seem to produce less foam when used for smoothies.
The only cons to mention: The 72oz pitcher or 20oz cup being plastic limits use with hot liquids. Also, the FreshVac pump can be used with a corded AC adapter, but the adapter is not included and must be purchased separately.
Overall, an excellent blender that produces great results quickly.

Attractive watch that works
on October 22, 2018
Posted by: Beuge
from Delaware
The Fossil Gen 4 Explorist HR is a very attractive watch that performs as expected.
The begin with, the watch looks fantastic. I love the stainless steel construction, round body, and dimpled bezel. It looks like a proper watch and goes well with dress clothes (as compared to a rubberized fitness tracker). And the size is perfect. I do not have large arms and was concerned how it would fit and look on my arms. But those fears were unfounded. It not only fits but also feels very comfortable.
With regards to the overall construction; The metal band, which is easily shortened, feels very sturdy and the clasp has a very positive closure to it. The buttons and crown feel solid with just the right amount of resistance. The 30 meter water resistance is reassuring. And the screen is crisp and bright and fills the full face of the watch (no flat tire).
Once charged (using a proprietary cable that makes a physical connection...no wireless charging), setup was snap. Instructions on both the watch and the phone app are clear and easy to follow. And the ability to reconfigure the buttons is a very nice option.
As for performance, the device has been responsive to swipes or tilts-to-wake and animations have been smooth. There has been an occasional hesitation, but they are few and far between. Step and heart rate tracking have proven consistent. And the battery has performed as I expected; I have comfortably gotten a day of mixed use without the device draining and shutting off. Though, admittedly, only just.
Regarding Wear OS 2, everything is easy to access and use. Quick swipes show you your notifications, or the settings, or the Google Assistant. The Google Assistant does a great job of pulling together relevant information from your calendar, your frequent locations, and your local weather. Notifications appear instantly and are easily cleared. And Google Pay is super easy to setup and use via NFC.
Overall, I'm very happy with the watch. Yes, it would be nice for the battery to last longer. But for the way I use it (telling time, tracking steps, checking notifications, NFC payments), everything works and I get a day of use without issue.
