A no-brainer for coffee lovers
on October 15, 2018
Posted by: nhtechie
from Nashua, NH
This coffee maker can do just about everything. And it has a frother.
My wife and I have very different tastes in coffee (and just about everything else, but that’s for a different therapy session). She likes the flavored coffee, I like plain and strong. I’m an iced-coffee-year-round-in-New-Hampshire kind of coffee drinker and she’s about 50/50 when it comes to seasonal (cold in hot weather, hot in cold weather), but she is always a hot coffee drinker at home.
Sorry for the history, but you may be in a similar situation & this could help you in your decision.
First off. Cold Brew. Love it.
How? Doesn’t it take forever for a “real” cold brew? Well yes, but this is brewed at a lower temp and takes about 10 minutes for 1 cup, when it’s set for “XL Mug.” Let me tell you, it’s realllly good. I’m used to doubling up on coffee scoops and brewing hot over ice, then adding more ice, stirring to make it less watered-down tasting & then eventually having something that’s OK tasting and cold. This cold-brewer is fantastic.
Like hot coffee? It does that too; if you like strong coffee, you’re in luck because the “Rich” setting can get you there. Flavored coffee has the flavor pop on that “Rich” setting. Having people over? Carafe time. Want a few cups on a weekend morning? Half-Carafe!
One thing it doesn’t do, is sense if there’s enough water to complete a cycle before it starts pouring coffee into your cup. You’ll come back to see ‘add water’ and half a cup brewed. But, instead of having some logic built in, they make “Step 1. After filling the water reservoir ...” the first part of the instructions in the book, in an effort to explain the ‘limitation.’
We aren’t tea drinkers, so to try to review a feature that I honestly can’t compare and contract would be a disservice to you, the reader.
If you're a coffee drinker and in the market for an advanced maker, then get. this. thing.

Coming from a cheap action camera, this is INSANE!
on October 3, 2018
Posted by: nhtechie
from Nashua, NH
I have experience with an $80 4K action cam, so this camera blew me away.
TLDR: Buy this. The quality is amazing & live streaming is pretty cool!
Long-winded review;
Let’s get right to it.
Pros:
Insane Quality
Tons of GoPro and 3rd party accessory available
YouTube Videos to help you get great videos, tune for cinematography, etc.
Video stabilization
Cons:
No more GoPro studio - replaced with Quik, which isn’t good. It just isn’t.
Things I’ve noticed:
It goes through battery pretty quickly, so you absolutely need 2 batteries at a minimum
It gets warm even at 1080p; 4k -- it’s good to double as a hand warmer, come winter
Issues (Firmware 1.0) - I used this version for over a week:
Occasional Freeze-ups (with an SD card NOT on the list (MB-ME64GA/AM) and with one ON the list / SDSQXNE-064G-AN6MA).
Strange symptoms of …
Screen staying black, but still recorded etc … needed reboots / battery pulls
Had to reset connections / reconfigure to get reliability back to Android App multiple times
Total app failure while at amusement park
NO STREAMING
Then, on roll-out day (when these started shipping) came with the 1.51 update!
There wasn’t an updated App, which I find a bit strange (and 4 days later, still no updates).
To get reliability on my phone, I needed to delete all cache/App data from phone, then remove the app
Then, I had to:
delete Bluetooth paired devices for GoPro
delete WiFi Access Points for GoPro
reset camera to factory defaults & set it up again
Reliability arrived and Live Streaming worked at that point.
But it’s a PAIN to use AND you have to have HotSpot capability on your phone (if you’re not at home), which uses data, so have an unlimited plan!
Let’s help you get a feel for “Live Streaming” while you’re out and about …
Set up your phone HotSpot & turn the HotSpot off (likely you did this before you headed out)
Connect to your Camera with the (Already Configured) GoPro App
FYI -- This turns your WiFi off & Connects to the GoPro HotSpot (WiFi with ! symbol for no Internet connectivity)
Scroll to the Set up Live Streaming button
Facebook setup (easy - need the App installed)
YouTube (needs a long custom URL)
Twitch (needs a long custom URL)
Other providers cost $$, so I didn’t try
Once you are in the setup screen, hit the drop-down for Wireless Networks and flip over to turn on your HotSpot.
Flip back over to the GoPro App and refresh the list (‘pull down’ for android) search for / attach to your phone’s HotSpot within the setup screen.
Then go Live.
If something happens to the App, you have to shut off your HotSpot & go back to the GoPro App. Eventually the Live Stream goes “Network Error” and stops … eventually.
All of my LTE HotSpot usage had very choppy video - so it seems like you’ll need some pretty stellar LTE service -- and you can’t use WiFi on your phone, when it’s a HotSpot.
If you’re home & have a decent pipe from your ISP, the live streaming is smooooooth. Repeat the steps, minus turning on the HotSpot and pick your home/friend’s SSID.
Also, since the latest update, there has been more reliability with the camera and an SD card ON the list; no more pulling the battery.
At first, this was going to be a 3-star review - with deductions due to the crummy App, instability and the inability to live stream, but now - 5 stars because it hasn’t needed a battery pull and live streaming is fixed!
P.S. did I mention there was insane quality?!

Fantastic Headset for the Office
on September 12, 2018
Posted by: nhtechie
from Nashua, NH
I’m a picky person when it comes to headsets and audio. I’ve been trying to use a gaming headset at work, however I need to have the microphone on the right side, which my gaming headset can’t support. Enter the Jabra Evolve 65, where the mic can rotate to be on either side!
I’ve used this headset for over two weeks now and have only good things to say. From Skype for Business, to WebEx and Google Play Music, this headset does exactly what I need it to do.
The form factor of “on the ear” isn’t my cup of tea as I’d rather an “over the ear” configuration, however that doesn’t detract from how good this headset it.
A red light will show up when engaged on a call, whether or not YOUR coworkers will see that and leave you be, only you’ll know -- however my coworkers ignore it every time. If they end up seeing the light and leaving you alone … you can also manually trigger the busy light, which could give you some serious concentration time.
Quick volume adjustment and the ability to mute from the headset are a must and this headset has those features.
I also started using this headset for streaming tunes and the audio is pretty good. I feel you lose music ‘feel’ with on-the-ear headphones, but the sound is good (given the intended purpose for these headphones). Not much for bass, but it’s not tinny at all - so, I’m somewhat impressed.
If you’re looking for a solid headset for calls in the office, all while able to comfortably listen to music, get this one.

Fantastic photo scanner
on August 28, 2018
Posted by: nhtechie
from Nashua, NH
This is a nice device and given the options, can take a bit of time scanning the photos.
By that, I mean that it can sense if there’s writing on one side and then keep a copy of that rear side as well as the image itself.
The color correction can be amazing, or over-the-top and hurt the photo; I recommend keeping the option to have corrections to go a separate file. Beware, these files are pretty big, so get some extra storage.
I found that the “auto rotation” function didn’t work with the included software. Also, the bed says ‘face down’ for people that have used a scanner before. However, there’s a ‘picture’ image, which means face-up and upside-down. So, depending on what you’re scanning, you have to insert the items in a different method.
I scanned my first two dozen photos in the wrong direction, but it worked just fine … because I had the ‘detect other size’ turned on and the photo part was on the ‘back’ it the scanner’s eyes - which increased the time to scan.
For example, it took about 5.5 minutes to scan and process 11 photos upside down on 600dpi. The actual movement of the photo through the scanner is quick … about 2-4 seconds per photo on the higher DPIs.
The power button is in a place that’s in the way. Let me explain: you’re going to scan a smaller photo and you need to adjust the guide (like all printers have), so you rest your right hand on the scanner and slide the guide in/out. Well, my outside palm sits exactly on the power button & ‘off’ it goes.
The app is pretty good, however CAUTION! If you’re using the computer program and are scanning photos (say 50 photos) and you launch the phone APP and set it up / connect to the scanner, it will intercept communication and the photos being scanned / processed on the computer go into the bit bucket -- you have to re-scan.
So, if you’re going to play with the mobile app, do it when you’re not actively scanning via another method.
Super thin paper got caught & jammed and my driver’s license didn’t get through either.
Overall -- 5 stars for this, from what I’ve tried & the quality of the scans.

Great addition to the Hue lifestyle
on July 10, 2018
Posted by: nhtechie
from Nashua, NH
These lights came in a box, where the weight said ‘these things are no joke.” Well, they aren’t. I was shocked to see that the weight was for all of the pieces that WERE NOT the lights; heavy duty transformer and thick AF cables.
A quick glance into the lights showed so many LEDs that I expect some good color with accuracy to the wheel.
I must say that my man card was revoked during the assembly, as I was forced to reference the documentation to connect all three lights together while testing in my home, prior to moving them outside.
Once assembled, I applied power and went into the Hue App (which was already installed), as I already had fifteen lights (bulbs/strips/etc) before adding these into the mix.
I searched for new lights and one-by-one, the new lights Hue Outdoor Spotlights 1-3 appeared. I created a new room “Deck” and added them to the room. Once added, I merged the lights into one (via the color wheel) and controlled them as a single color. I also gave the pre-configured scenes a whirl, and they tuned each spotlight as I’d expect (given so many colored Hue lights in the house already). Then, for the 4th, I lit them up Red White & Blue!
Then, I popped over to my Google Home app and unlinked / relinked my Philips Hue app to allow Google to know about “Deck” and allow voice control.
I interrupted Hirie and Eric Rachmany killing it in “Sun and Shine” and my Google Assistant powered JBL Link 20 (from Best Buy) responded. “Turn off Deck” I spoke and ‘poof’ I was in the dark; “turn on Deck” then allowed me to continue on with my messing around. So easy and so responsive; both the App and GH integration.
After about 24-hours, an update was available for the lights & it took around 15 minutes; no issues encountered.
If you want to add some outside mood lighting while entertaining, this is the way to go.

Great multi-functional Bluetooth device
on July 1, 2018
Posted by: nhtechie
from Nashua, NH
I’ve had Bluetooth in the car since 2012, but I’ve taken on a car *without* Bluetooth in it and it’s driving me crazy.
I’ve been using the 3.5mm AUX jack to handle music and enough is enough - time to find a Bluetooth solution.
Enter: Aluratek and the ABC35F.
They include every cable that can interface with this unit, which includes the optical cable, and I found that fantastic and also, unheard of. Kudos to Aluratek for providing what we need and saving us from having to take another drive to Best Buy to get more cables.
This unit has a very small footprint and is powered by 5V USB. An added bonus is that it has an internal battery. When using the device, a quick flip of the switch turns it from transmitting to a receiver for your phone, pushing sound out the out the 3.5mm jack on the unit, right to the AUX jack in the car.
When the radio is on AUX and there is no music, acceleration creates a whine noise through the speakers, however when a connected device starts playing music, the whine goes away and the tunes sound pretty good.
The disappointing part, is that you cannot also use it to handle your calls in the car. Nothing says you can, but I found this very strange, as I could “hey Google,” ask a question & get a response without issue.
If you try to make a call when they are paired, it just works like a normal call; hitting the “B” Bluetooth button on the phone goes into scanning mode for devices that can handle calls, which this device can’t do.
When I retire this car and get Bluetooth capabilities again, this device will move right into the bedroom to be a transmitter to my Bluetooth headphones!
Do I recommend this? Well, even with the caveat that it can't handle phone calls, it's still a "Yes."

Great features and easy to use.
on July 1, 2018
Posted by: nhtechie
from Nashua, NH
This is the first time I’ve used a paid piece of VPN software to control the identity of my browsing. I’ve used the (free) tor browser before, as well as running a Tails VM off of a thumb drive to play around with the Dark Web. Tor browser was easy enough to use, but bookmarks and whatnot don’t make sense if you want to hide what you’re doing, plus there are some interesting things you can find there.
Now NordVPN is a piece of software that installs without a hitch on ChromeOS and Android, as well as MacOS, Windows and other platforms using the quite simple OpenVPN software like you were connecting into the office with a Linux laptop.
The nordvpn.com account portion was easy enough to do, even with an already existing login/password; just go to the URL in the paperwork inside the box & use your existing credentials to have the annual plan activated with the provided code.
My first few uses of the software showed my ‘net speeds dip from 130Mb/s to ~ 260Kb/s -- which wasn’t good AND it was in the US like me. I disconnected and switched countries in the App and over to the UK I went and up to 65Mb/s - much better.
Other cool features with NordVPN, is the Double VPN (Netherlands -> Russia, for example) as well as Onion Over VPN -- to get to the Hidden Wiki, for example. Onion Over VPN skirts the need to use tor browser, for example & you can use whichever insecure browser you want like ( ::cough:: Chrome ::cough:: ) or move to something a little more privacy-centric like the DuckDuckGo browser.
I like the software and it doesn’t seem to bloat me up, whether or not it kills my battery, is tough to say. This is because I rarely do the same activities, use the same apps, etc, to be able to make a solid call.
Do I recommend this? Sure!
Will I renew after the year? Maybe, it all depends on the discounts thrown towards someone to renew.

Expectations Exceeded!
on June 24, 2018
Posted by: nhtechie
from Nashua, NH
First off, this is my second Chromebook, however first 2-in-one.
Technical Issues? Nope, surprisingly!
There were a ton of things that I liked … including:
Quick WiFi acquisition -- when opening the clamshell, it got a wifi signal very quickly.
Printing - worked fine with my HP 5200 series wireless printer
The display comes set to a very low resolution, so I bumped it up to 1500x1000; the max resolution made it impossible for me, with great eyesight, to use it.
I listen to a ton of music during the day -- let’s say 10hours/day. I found there to be seamless audio casting with Google Play Music to any Google device in the house. Also, it connects to a Bose Soundlink Mini via Bluetooth without issue as well.
Another very good feature is that there is NOT a proprietary connector to charge it … it uses a USB-C Charger, but requires so much juice to charge, that normal fast-chargers won’t touch it. At least you can use THAT charger to charge your phone, etc.
Oh, and it has 2x USB-C ports, so you can still hook up a flash drive if needed. Let’s not forget about the microSD card slot for additional storage as well, though at 32GB on this unit & everything going to the cloud -- I didn’t find myself struggling for free space.
There is a solid feeling keyboard. It’s a good size given the tablet portion and the trackpad is perfectly centered - so it’s easy movement between typing & moving the cursor. The magnets are strong and takes a good tug to disconnect it from the keyboard, which doesn’t have a power source itself, thus doesn’t need to be charged in addition to the tablet.
The camera is decent, however I didn’t find myself bringing it outside to use so I can’t compare it to my S8+ in regards to quality (and I didn’t research the specs on this camera either, FWIW).
Something that REALLY shocked me was how minima the fingerprints were … not like the iPads of yesteryear.
Lastly, a pen is new to me, and until I get a real need for it, is somewhat in the way, so I keep it attached to my old 13in MacBook Pro’s Incase pouch.
With the Pros, there are almost always some cons. This device has a lot less than I had expected, so here we go …
The front-facing speakers (like the Nexus 9) are good but not great; when I see something purposely marked B&O (Bang & Olufsen), I expect more than some tinny output.
The screen is a bit wobbly when taking photos while docked to the keyboard, mainly because the display is a HEAVY ‘tablet’ piece. When I was doing some basic video recording on the rear facing camera I definitely had low-light focusing issues.
Can’t [easily] rename the device -- which can be annoying for those with naming conventions
Apps:
Not all are major Android Apps are ready for ChromeOS - it seems like they want to get away from “Apps” and move to Cloud-driven, so -- GMAIL isn’t an App by default, it directs you to Chrome & the gmail web page.
Here are some Apps that I came across that just don’t work:
Netflix (but the website works fine)
Blink Camera
Fing
So, to sum it up there is plenty of horsepower for the type of use that I’m giving it and I’m a power user in all aspects of technology.

Effective scrubbing
on April 26, 2018
Posted by: nhtechie

I've been looking to replace my steam mop because of its age and this fell in my lap.
Using the water / solution mix - it did pretty good getting some marks off the old linoleum. I took it to the wood laminate and it also gave a nice shine, however left a bit of a cloudy residue. Perhaps a bit less solution for the future.
Overall, the two different pads make a good difference and it's quiet. Very quiet. It has a bit of pull when you turn the handle and given that the pads are circular, you can't get into 90 degree corners.
There is a plastic mat that you can rest the mop on and it has holes, allowing for the pads to dry - a cool idea.

A printer that requires a subscription
on April 3, 2018
Posted by: nhtechie
from Nashua, NH
This review is for the HP OJ 5252.
Imagine getting a new printer at only $100 - that copies / scans / faxes … it must seem too good to be true, right? Now, imagine taking that same printer, however after only printing 20 pages - you’re stopped from printing more … unless you subscribe to a ‘printing payment plan.’
Ahhh, there’s the catch.
Printing as a service, out of your home, is what this is.
This printer reports every page printed back to HP & if your plan says you can only print 30 pages a month, your printer goes unused. Plans will ding you from $3 and more every month for a pre-specified number of pages.
That may be good for some, but this is yet another recurring payment that I don’t want to have to worry about.
How does this handle jams? Do the pages count against that? I don’t know - probably best to call HP.
Does a blank page at the end of a document (say, page 10 is blank but 1-9 are full color) count towards your limit? Yes it does.
Now get this - you are running low on ink -- *you* don’t know you are, but HP does and they will automagically send you ink at no cost -- because that’s included in your monthly subscription.
Now THAT sounds cool - except once again, you can’t print until you’re out of ink like normal printers … you can print until you’re out of your ‘free’ pages a month, or until you’re exhausted your current allotment. Never fear! Should you run over & need to print more, no worries - you’ll get a credit card charge.
Say you are on a pay plan & you don’t use all of your pages? Rollover pages exist! Rollover pages DO NOT exist, however, for the free pages. So you can’t go 10 months without printing your max free pages a month & have them all available at month 11.
I understand the budget constraints & how people need to spend $100 on Certified HP ink (on other printers) can be tough on families and people. For me, this idea is not for me (does that make sense?).
I have enough monthly subscriptions to have to worry about a mystery $10 charge because my kids printed extra pages for a report.
Now, onto the printer itself.
The color is great, quality is great, scanner & app functionality are great. This can print multiple sides & instead of having to scan a page, flip it and continuing on, the tray will feed the pages for you and generate a nice .pdf.
The app is a bit clunky and the Admin Interface is how you update the software. For me, the update didn't work and required a reboot of the printer during the install (risky, I know) for it to complete.
If I could buy it & use it as any normal printer, that’d be great. Otherwise, I’d pass.

Nice for the price, but buzz is annoying
By solandmatt from Chicago, IL
I appreciate the importance of quality sound in a home theater system but I would not call myself an audiophile. I needed a powered subwoofer to integrate with the surround speakers that I hooked up with a new receiver.
The subwoofer works great. Movies, TV and music sound wonderful, with deeper and richer bass than I expected for the price.
My only disappointment, and it is a major one, is that it started to buzz after a few days. It does this whether on or off. I have to unplug it because it is extremely annoying otherwise. I searched reviews and it seems that other customers have had this problem as well. An Amazon customer spoke with Pioneer tech support and they indicated that this is a known issue. I guess the price is too good to be true.

buzz / hum

I purchased one, ordered another to have the "5.2" - and the same buzzing / humming is coming from the one from the store. I'm waiting for my second one to come in & see if it's the same. If it is, sigh - I'm going to dump them.

Featuring a 1-inch CMOS sensor, powerful autonomous functions, and a compact body weighing less than 600 g, DJI Air 2S is the ultimate drone for aerial photographers on the move. Take this all-in-one aerial powerhouse along anywhere to experience and record your world in stunning detail.

can you use the air 2 app to fly the 2s

Short Answer: No
Longer Answer: There isn't an Air 2 App.
The DJI Fly App has been (seemingly) pulled by the Google Play Store (you may still have it, but it won't update), so you have to get it right from DJI now.
If you don't get the current App from DJI, you can't activate and subsequently fly the Air 2s.

This only has 1 hdmi input? So I can’t hook up my Apple TV n my PlayStation thru the sound bar? Or does it just pay to go with HTZ9F

Use an optical cable OUT of your TV and INTO the bar and use the HDMI ports on your TV for your accessories. That way, the sound will be sent through the bar and it'll be one less hop to risk degradation of the video signal. Any Apps on your TV will also go through the bar, so another win there.

I have a PS4, Blu Ray Player and PC running through this soundbar without issue.

The user guide has a cabling diagram that's very straightforward.

I read online that this mouse doesnt work with windows 10?

With the G Hub software for customizations (and to make the left-click work at first), it works flawlessly.

Can the Link 20 be paired to more than one device? I got it set up on my phone with the Google Home app. I put Google Home on my tablet. When I try to pair it can't find a device.

Pairing is for Bluetooth, Linking is for Google Home.
As long as your tablet is on the Same WiFi network name (linksys vs linksys-5G) and you're using the same Google account, it should be listed in Devices in the Home App.
If any of those items aren't the same (like using another google account), you'll have to link your account or join the same WiFi Name.

Make your home an internet haven with this versatile Linksys Velop wireless Wi-Fi system. Three identical tri-band dual-stream AC2200 routers, each equipped with a quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor, deliver lightning-fast internet. Equipped with Bluetooth 4.0/LE, this Linksys Velop wireless Wi-Fi system is simple to set up and pairs easily with computers, tablets and smart devices.

Have Linksys EA9500 which is hooked via Ethernet with my current provider which ihas a modem/router. Had to add 2 D-Link Power line adapters to get better wifi. Would returning all above work better with Velop?

I had the same thing. I disabled all of the functionality (Wireless, DHCP, etc), changed the IP (from 192.168.1.1, as the Velop uses that IP as well) and changed the hostname on the EA9500 and set these up with the same SSID that I had on the EA9500.
The additional devices only require power - no extra Cat5e/Cat6 cables needed. Since the Velop doesn't have a bunch of ports (just 1), I kept the EA9500 to act as a switch.
Spreading out the Velop units DOES make the signal better with little to no impact on speed.
