Love It

This has been the best for my hardwood floors. The entire first floor of my home is hardwood and I've made due with a Swiffer and the wet mops, which always ended up coating a small part of the area and drying out quickly after. Cleaning with this is super simple - the rotating mop heads work great and I'm able to load the cleaning solution into the tank and spray it as needed. It is a little larger than I was expecting it'd be, but other than that I have nothing bad to say about this.

Neat Little Speaker
on April 20, 2017
Posted by: SamG
I like this little speaker and I think you will too as long as you know what you're getting it for.
It's very small - I'd say about the size of a Zippo lighter. It's made of all rubber and hard plastic. There's a cap on the bottom that covers the built-in USB connector that is used to charge it. There's only two buttons as well as well - volume up and volume down; all other functions are handled through some combination press/hold of the two. Though I haven't dropped it yet, it feels like it could take a few hits to the pavement and be just fine. There's a clip built into the back of it that feels strong and flexible. That combined with the small size meant I was able to clip it pretty much anywhere (shirt collar, pants pocket, etc.) and never had to worry about it falling off. It seems pretty well sealed up, but I don't think it's water-resistant and I wonder how it might hold up if you were to drop it in the dirt or sand.
The sound is pretty good. I'd call it a step in quality and loudness from any built-in phone speaker, but it's not as good as the sound you'd get from a regular-sized Bluetooth speaker. It's great for what it is considering the size. It gets loud enough for quiet rooms. I listened to it in my car with all the windows rolled up and ended up cranking the volume to the max to hear it though. There's a little bit of distortion at max volume, but not a lot.
The battery life is quoted at 3 hours at 'just over half volume' and that seems about right. Most of my listening was at or near max volume and it seemed like I was driving closer to 2 hours. Having the USB connector built in is nice because you don't have to carry an extra cable around with you to charge it, but the speaker is big enough that if you are charging it on a slim laptop or a USB port in a car that's buried in the console it could pose a problem. The battery life is a disappointing to me - it will basically get you through a commute or a short to medium hike, but I would be plugging it into a charger after each use. Again, considering the size I don't think it's terrible, but I do wish it was better.
Overall I think this is a value as long as you know what you need it for. The packaging of the Polk Bit shows people running, climbing, biking, etc. It definitely feels like a fitness-oriented product and I see it's main use case being in places where using normal ear buds or headphones is not appropriate/safe. I could especially see this being useful for someone who rides their bike a lot.

Small and Powerful 2-in-1 (Mostly 1)
on April 10, 2017
Posted by: SamG
Outside of possibly the HP Spectre x360, I don’t think I’ve used a Windows laptop that’s as nice as the Dell XPS 2 in 1. It’s so much smaller than you’d think it would be and powerful enough to do pretty much anything outside of heavy media and gaming without a hiccup.
Starting with the physical, this is a 13.3” laptop packed into a frame that’s only a tiny bit bigger than the 12” MacBook. This is mainly accomplished by reducing the bezels in the display. There are hardly any borders around the main display and the webcam is moved down near the hinges (more on that later). It’s really striking to look at. The outside is all aluminum and the area where the keyboard lives is a soft touch carbon fiber pattern. I’m more a fan of the aluminum look all around, but the carbon fiber pattern does look nice and it’s much more comfortable on the hands than cold metal. The entire package feels solid and well put together. The hinge feels strong and keeps the screen stable while still making it easy to move. All the serial number and regulatory information is on the bottom of the laptop hidden underneath the XPS nameplate, which I thought was a neat touch. The one thing that has bothered me is this thing is a royal pain to actually open from close. There’s no notch on the lid to get your finger under and you need both hands to get it open. It’s not hard to open once you get a grip on it, but I wish they’d left even a small gap in the lid to get your finger under.
For ports, you get two USB Type C ports (one of which is Thunderbolt 3), a headphone jack, and a micro SD slot. The USB ports are positioned on either side of the laptop and either can be used to charge it with the included 30 watt USB-C charger. Being able to charge on either side of the laptop is nice and with the charger being USB-C you have the freedom to use any other charger or even a portable charger. I wish they could have included a USB-A port, but Dell was nice enough to put a USB-C to USB-A dongle in the box, so that will get me by until the rest of world gets onboard with USB-C.
The keyboard and trackpad are just about perfect. The keys are backlit, well-spaced, and have great travel. My only complaint about the keyboard is that the Page Up/Down keys are positioned right next to the arrow keys and it’s pretty easy to press them accidentally. The trackpad works great and has a good click feel all around it. Besides that, you also get a fingerprint sensor, which works great and is way easier than logging in with a password.
The 1080p display is plenty sharp for its size and it has good colors. There’s a higher resolution one available that’s 3200x1800, but I don’t think it’s a must-have upgrade. The touchscreen works well, but in my personal use I tend to keep to the trackpad, especially with how great it is. Though a pen is not included, it does support an active pen input that you can get from Dell separately.
Sitting centered below the display is the webcam and it’s not good. The quality is just okay and it looks at you from a pretty unflattering angle in laptop mode. The only way to really use it in my mind is to flip it into ‘tent’ mode, but then you lose access to the keyboard and trackpad. I don’t do much with the webcam, so it’s not a huge issue for me, but if you do a lot of video conferencing I would call this problem bad enough to avoid this laptop entirely.
Performance all around was snappy. My model has the Core i7, 16GB of RAM, and a 256 GB PCIe SSD. It should be noted that the i7 processor that Dell uses is a fan-less model has a base clock speed of only 1.3 GHz, but a ‘turbo’ frequency of up to 3.6 GHz. My usage of browsing multiple tabs, watching videos, and playing a couple of light games didn’t show any signs of slowdown whatsoever. It definitely feels like an i7 to me. Not having a fan is nice too; I did notice it got a little warm after continuous use, but not uncomfortably so. Battery life was also great and my usage got me around a full day of use. This is the first laptop I’ve had where that didn’t give me the anxiety of always feeling like I need to plug it in.
You get Windows 10 Home preinstalled. It’s got a little bit of bloatware, but it was easily uninstalled. One item to note for anyone considering this is to update your Wi-Fi drivers when you get it. For me at least I was getting terrible Wi-Fi speeds until I could download the latest driver. After that no problems.
Though it is a 2 in 1 laptop, I found myself pretty much just using it as a laptop. Being able to flip the screen around is nice when you’re laying down on the couch, but the screen is just too big to comfortably use as a tablet for a long period of time. I think I’d do fine with the regular XPS, but the 2 in 1 functionality is a nice bonus and I don’t mind it as long as it doesn’t hinder the laptop functionality.
I’d definitely recommend looking at the XPS 2 in 1. You get a lot of portability with some real power behind it. The only thing that really kills me about this thing is the webcam, but I can forgive that because I don’t use it.

Really Nice Speaker
on March 25, 2017
Posted by: SamG
I'm really happy with this speaker. It has good sound and it gets really loud. The extra stuff like the lights and multi-speaker pairing I could do without, but they don't take anything away from the fact that this is a really nice sounding speaker.
The speaker itself is pretty compact and it has a good heft to it. It feels like it's built well. It comes with a Micro USB cable for charging, but no power adapter; not a problem for me, but something to note. There's a line of buttons across the top for various functions and they all are big and easy to press. The front of it also has an LED light that will illuminate in different patterns depending on what is playing. It's water resistant as well, which is definitely a big plus for taking it camping or boating.
I like the sound of this speaker for how small it is. It plays all my music clearly and it gets really loud despite how small it is. I think the XB in the model name is supposed to stand for Extra Bass and there's a dedicated button on the speaker for turning it off and on. Most things I've listened to in the past with an 'extra bass' option only muddied the rest of the sound - I'm happy to say that was not the case here. Thinking my default would be to leave this off I actually prefer to have it on and the Extra Bass setting does a really good job of adding that low end depth without making the rest of the music less clear.
Sony has an app for the speaker called SongPal that lets you manage some additional settings. The SongPal app lets you change the way the LED lights on the front behave and also allows you to take multiple speakers and put them all in a single 'group' - basically you could get 2 of these (or an XB30 or XB40) and use one as a right channel and one as a left. It's a nice touch, but I don't see myself ever using it. Unless you want to fiddle with the LEDs I'd say you don't need it.
Speaking of the LEDs, I'm not a fan. I wish there was more control over the lighting. The app lets you set the lights to Rave, Chill, Strobe, or Off. They all seem to be repeating the same pattern as far as I can tell. Rave has the lights changing fast, while Chill is 10x slower. Strobe seems like it's as fast as Rave, but the lights don't stay on as long between changes. I ended up leaving it set to off. Some people might like it, but not me and that's okay. Having them there at all is a neutral point for me.
Some other items that may be of interest:
- It has NFC built-in, so if you've got an Android phone you can use that to pair up with it.
- It also uses a new Bluetooth audio codec called LDAC, which is supposed to allow for higher bit rate audio over Bluetooth. I think some Sony phones have this, but for right now it's probably not something that matters to most people (though Android O will support the codec natively).
Overall I really like this speaker and it definitely lives up to its $100 price. I think there are probably better speakers, but I also think you'd probably end up paying $50-$100 more for them.

Super Easy, Super Fast, Super Pricey
on January 13, 2017
Posted by: SamG
This is my first time using a mesh router system. I really like the Velop setup. It's extremely easy to use and setup and the WiFi is super fast and very stable. It's missing some advanced settings that unfortunately made my setup a little more difficult and for the price you better make sure you have a home that really warrants this type of setup.
Physical Units:
The nodes themselves are relatively compact, though I don't think as small as other nodes like the Google WiFi ones. Still, they're inconspicuous enough that you could put them on a bookshelf or something and they wouldn't really stand out. There aren't any external antennas and there's just one LED indicator light on the top of each node. Each node has 2 physical Ethernet connections - for the one you are plugging into your modem you can use either one; the node will automatically sense which Ethernet connection is providing the Internet. I do wish that they could have put at least one more Ethernet port in there as I do have a few devices I like to hardwire, but for most people I'm guessing this won't be an issue. There aren't any USB ports anywhere either, so you're out of luck if you use an external hard drive as a network drive. Again, that's another sort of advanced feature that probably isn't an issue for a lot of people, but it would have been nice to have one. Maybe even some kind of optional node you could get separately that had more connections like that?
Setup:
The initial setup is extremely easy; there's no generic WiFi network you need to connect to or Ethernet cable you have to run to a PC. Everything is done with the Linksys app through Bluetooth. I already had a WRT3200ACM from Linksys, so I was pretty familiar with the app already. You run the first time setup through the app and it will give you a step-by-step on disconnecting your old router and connecting the Velop in its place. Once you have configured the first node you assign the WiFi network and then additional nodes as needed. All of this is done without having to even connect to the WiFi network you just created, which I really appreciated. I've always enjoyed the Linksys app, but I haven't had this easy of a time setting up a router since I got the Google OnHub.
I should note at this point that I was not able to remove my WRT3200ACM router because my CenturyLink Prism connection requires a VLAN; something my WRT router has an option for, but the Velop does not, at least at this point (01/13/2017). I had to connect the first node to my WRT and turn off my WRT's WiFi to finish the setup. It's pretty disappointing that there are no VLAN settings available and it's the same reason I had to get rid of my OnHub router, but my internet setup is a little unique so I understand it's omission. I do hope the add it in later.
Using:
Fast strong WiFi everywhere. I didn't have any problems connecting and maintaining full signal strength anywhere in my house. The 3-node system is made for homes up to 6600 square feet; my house is much smaller than that and I probably could get away with using just 2 of these nodes. It does combine the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks under the same SSID and as far as I know that can't be changed. That might bother some people, but for my uses it didn't affect me. Using the app is even simpler with the Velop nodes than it is with my WRT router. The app is less about managing the router itself as all you can really do is change the WiFi network and more about managing access. You can set restrictions are certain devices and turn the guest network on and off. It's not a knock on the app because I know they're going for simplicity here and they nailed it.
I really liked using the Velop overall, but $500 is a lot of money for a router, especially when you're missing a lot of features that more advanced single router systems have for $200 or $300 less. There are also less expensive mesh router systems out there, though I don't know how they would compare to the Velop. I think you need to look at where you're putting them and what kind of coverage you need. Linksys does offer a two pack and a single pack and since all the nodes are the same you could start with one or two and buy more as needed. I really do like the Velop, but add VLAN, Linksys!

Better Than I Thought
on January 8, 2017
Posted by: SamG
I ended up liking this little thing a lot more than I thought I would. I have used white noise apps on my phone in conjunction with a speaker and I didn't expect this to sound any better, but it does. The sound quality doesn't blow away the phone and speaker setup, but it's more even, which I am guessing is because of the fact the speaker is facing up and probably distributing the sound better. If you are a person who needs something like this to sleep I think it's a worthwhile purchase, especially if you are using a white noise app and just having your phone play the sound. Having the dedicated device is a lot easier than breaking out the whole phone and speaker deal.
Things I Liked:
The sound is very good and can get pretty loud for how small this thing is. You get a range of white noise options, as well as different types of fan sounds. I settled on Brown Noise #5, which is the 'darkest' of the white noise options and it did seem to have a positive impact on my sleep. Once you turn the speaker on you can set it on a sleep timer as well in 60 minute increments, which is nice. The thing itself is pretty small and inconspicuous as well and since the speaker is facing upward you can tuck into a corner or behind something and still get the sound.
Things I Didn't Like:
I wish there was some kind of display or indicator on it. There is are white noise and fan noise buttons that just cycle through the sounds without an indication of what each sound is. The manual does give you the list of sounds and you do get a little chime to indicate you've come back to the beginning of the selection, but some kind of knob and/or LED to give you a better sense of where you are would be nice. This is only a minor annoyance for me and I imagine most people as you will probably settle on the sound you like best when you first set it up and leave it from there.

Cool Little System
on December 18, 2016
Posted by: SamG
I really like this system a lot and was actually very surprised at how easy it was to get everything going. I already have an ADT system with door sensors and a motion detector. I've had some false trips on the motion detector in the past few weeks and this gives me a really easy way to check my house and see what is going on. Besides a few minor gripes that can be remedied by purchasing additional accessories I don't have a lot of bad things to say about this.
In the box you get:
- 2 Cameras w/ Rechargeable Batteries
- Base Station
- Magnetic Mounting Bases for each Camera (w/ screws)
- Power and Ethernet Cables
You start by plugging in the base station to an Ethernet port on your router. The base station is not wireless, so you'll need to make sure your router has a free Ethernet port and that you are able to place the base station close enough. Once the base station is connected and powered on you start the setup process either through the app or in a web browser. The process has you register for a Netgear account and then sync all of the cameras you have. The sync process is a really easy and takes less than a minute per camera. Once you've got all that done you can begin placing your cameras wherever you are going to put them.
For my setup I have one camera mounted on my front porch looking at my door and another camera mounted on the side of my house looking out on my back patio. The cameras a weather proof and can be used indoors and out. The included magnetic bases make it really easy to mount and position the camera, but the flip side of that is that it's actually really easy to just remove the camera and walk off with it. I wish they had included more secure mounts for outdoors (they are available separately). If you are mounting the cameras outside I'd recommend either getting better mounts or placing your cameras someplace that is inconspicuous and out of reach. There is also a black silicone shroud available for the cameras if the white sticks out too much for you. Again - kind of wish that had been included or the cameras were a darker color in the first place, but at least it's an option. The cameras are a least relatively compact and I found the one on my front porch was easy enough to conceal from plain view.
As far as the image quality goes, it looks pretty good in both day and night situations. The cameras do have night vision built in, so it will switch to that when it starts to get dark. There are also motion sensors and microphones built-in. The motion sensor is the primary detection method by default, but you can also turn detection based on audio as well. One other neat thing is the cameras will actually let you talk through them if you have the app on your phone.
Both cameras sync with the Arlo base station, which will record when triggered and store those recordings in the cloud. You get 7 days of recordings from up to 5 cameras for free. The base station also has a couple of USB ports that you can use to record to local storage. I was a little concerned about the cloud recording on the base station since if the internet were to go out you would no longer have recordings being sent, but having the option of adding local storage is nice peace of mind. The local storage would work in concert with the cloud recording, so you don't have to choose one over the other. The base station also has a 100 decibel alarm built in that can be activated when motion or audio is detected by the cameras. It's turned off by default and I haven't tried using it yet, but I'm assuming it would be plenty loud enough to wake up the whole house or scare someone off.
All of this is controlled through the Arlo app or Arlo online portal. Since the cameras are connected to the internet you can access them from anywhere. You can set rules for the different modes, view live feeds of each camera, see recordings, and change settings. You can arm and disarm the system manually through the app, setup schedules, or arm and disarm based on your location (geofencing). The geofencing option was listed as a beta feature, but it is what I have been using on my iPhone and I haven't had any problems with it. The app is really fast and easy to use is able to connect the system from anywhere very quickly.
After going through everything the only thing I wish that Netgear had included was better hardware to secure and hide the cameras outside, but besides that this is something I plan to keep and continue using. The app makes it really easy to control everything and the free cloud storage is a big plus for me.

Pretty Good Trimmer
on November 18, 2016
Posted by: SamG
I really liked this trimmer. I owned a trimmer like it prior to this one and it absolutely blows it out of the water. You get a nice assortment of attachments and they all work very well; wet or dry. I'll go over each of them here:
1. The nose hair trimmer worked well. It is a different shape than I was used from my old multigroom trimmer, but once I figured it out there were no problems.
2. The body shave works as advertised. I was hoping I could maybe used it for my face and neck as well, but the manual specifically warns against doing that. Nothing against the attachment, just not what it was designed for.
3. The trimmer head and the precision trimmer both work great. I used them to trim up the hair around my neck line and there were no issues. You also get a little thing of oil to lubricate the blades on these.
4. Body/Stubble/Hair Combs - I only got a chance to use the body comb, but it works well. It seems like they are not as easy to attach and remove as they could be, but as long as you line them up correctly with the trimmer you shouldn't have any issues. Still, I wonder if I might accidentally break one of these some day.
Besides the attachments you get a charging cord and a bag to carry everything in. I haven't had to charge this yet since I got it and have used it 3 or 4 times. I do wish Philips included a better storage solution for the trimmer and all the attachments. The bag is just a bag; it will hold everything, but not in any sort of organized fashion. I also wish this had a charging stand instead of just a cord, but with the way the battery has lasted so far this isn't something I'll need to charge after every use anyway, so I can understand the lack of something like that. The instructions are pretty clear and easy to understand but they are all printed onto a big multi-language folded piece of paper. A booklet would have been much better and having to unfold the entire sheet to find something is infuriating.
Besides a few nitpicks, I really like this overall. I didn't use my old multigroom tool that much before, but I will definitely be using this more often.

Awesome Router
on October 20, 2016
Posted by: SamG
I am loving this router. I'd read a few early reviews that stated the firmware was buggy, but I have not seen any issues like that. I actually had just recently purchased the Netgear Nighthawk X4S AC2600 router before this and and while it worked pretty well, I had some issues with my Centurylink Prism TV service freezing up every now and then while using it. I was never quite able to resolve that issue on the Netgear, but it doesn't seem to be a problem at all with this Linksys router and I really appreciate that.
I really do like the design. It's a throwback to the extremely popular WRT54GL, which you can actually still buy today from Linksys believe it or not. It's not quite as big as my Nighthawk X4S, but I would not call it compact by any means. The lights on the front look really nice and they're not overwhelming. It has 4 antennas, 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports, a USB 3.0 port, and USB 2.0/eSATA port, and a WPS button. There's also a power switch on the router, which is a nice touch.
I don't have any complaints about the WiFi performance. My house has a few computers, a 4K TV, game consoles, Apple TV, Chromecast, and phones connected to the network and I probably have 8-15 devices connected at any given time. This router has the latest and greatest 802.11ac Wave 2 WiFi with MU-MIMO and 160MHz channel width. That's not going to make a difference to most people right now because there really aren't any devices out yet to take advantage of it, but it's nice to have for the future and what I have right now works great. We do a lot of streaming and my TV service is brought in over the internet; both have been perfect over the past few days and I have struggled to get the TV service to perform well with my Nighthawk router.
One of my favorite thing about this and other Linksys routers is the the Smart Wi-Fi status and configuration interface. I haven't used any router that does this better, including Google's OnHub. The Smart Wi-Fi lets register the router to an account and access it anywhere online or through the app. Both the browser and the app give you really easy access to a lot of useful features. My parents also have a Linksys router that has the Smart Wi-Fi interface and I'm able to manage their router and mine through the same account. Something specific to to this series is that it will actually let you replace the Smart Wi-Fi firmware on the router with a 3rd party open source firmware, which is what made the WRT54GL so popular. I haven't tried replacing the firmware, nor do I want to, but it can open up a world of functionality and features that may not be available on the stock firmware. For my purposes it's perfect, but the option is there.
I don't think you can go wrong with this router, but if you wanted to save $50 or so you could get the WRT1900ACS, which has most of the same features, but doesn't have the 802.11ac Wave 2 WiFi.

I would recommend this to a friend!
