Good Entry Security System for Smaller Property
on May 3, 2021
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
If you are looking for a solid, wired security system for your house or property, you could do well with this Swann system.
The biggest caveat to any wired security system is installing it, and as long as you are aware of that going in (but also of the benefits of wired) then there’s no reason to discount the system.
Wiring for each camera is generous, and tucking them away in the wall seals or running the cables through holes drilled in your property isn’t an issue. Installation is straightforward, and there’s nothing really to fault here during the process.
Construction of the cameras does feel more robust than some wireless counterparts (I have a few Arlo inside the house and the Swann cameras have a bit more weight to them and feel less plastic).
My biggest recommendation to anyone would be buy a separate monitor/tv for your security system to use exclusively. If you do that, you won’t have any issue with placement of the system’s DVR box. Once everything is set up you’re pretty much good to go.
I really like the cameras blue/red lights and sirens, and the motion detection seems to be spot on. The heat detection feature seemed to be hit or miss, but I felt that was the least important of them all for my needs.
Some people may also find that the 90-degree angle of each camera is too little, but again if you place your cameras right this shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
My only real gripe is with the Swann app that they have. It’s okay at best, not like the cloud-based systems such as Arlo’s interface. It’s a bit clunky and could benefit from an overhaul. Of course, most likely you’re not going to be relying on the app and cloud-storage (hence why you’d buy a wired system) so it’s a bit of a pass for me.
Overall, the camera quality is good at day and night, DVR is clear and has ample storage, and camera wiring is long enough to ensure coverage.

Great gaming laptop that just misses perfection
on March 2, 2021
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
The latest “mid-range” gaming laptop from Asus, the TUF Dash F15, is a great entry into the market for a lot of reasons, and one you should consider if you’re looking for power, sleekness, and performance on the go.
Starting out, unboxing the laptop was easy and typical in a brown box. You get the power cord and brick, start up guide, and the laptop itself. Standard fair.
Once everything is out and you take the laptop out of its protective sleeving you’ll see just how sleek the grey looks. Make no mistake: the F15 is slim, doesn't look too “gamer”, and at 4.4lbs stacks up against the likes of a Macbook Pro, from an overall size perspective. It’s made of aluminum and plastics, which you’d expect in this price range.
You’ll want to perform a BIOS update upon first turning on, along with a few other system updates recommended from Asus upon initial power on.
Starting off, the screen is pretty good, not the best calibrated out of the box, but will do for most, and with the RTX 3070 the 240hz refresh rate can really be unlocked provided you play on lower graphics settings. During my testing, I found that the F15 really stood up with High or Ultra quality games at 1080p above 60fps for most AAA titles. Putting it in perspective, my own desktop is outfitted with a RTX 2080 TI and 32GB of RAM, on a 1440p 144hz 34” monitor, and at 1080p the difference wasn’t as profound as I expected.
Speaking of general performance, the battery during my week so far with it has been great, honestly. One unique feature is that you can actually charge via one of the USB C ports if you want, to mitigate the poor power port placement. Hard tasks you can expect the usual 2-3 hours worth, but other, standard usage I consistently got 6-8 hours out of it, which to me isn’t bad at all.
Of course, if you’re worried about a quiet gaming laptop this probably isn’t your best choice. The fans and computer tend to run a bit warm, which should be expected from such a small chassis and power underneath the hood. Ideally, this isn’t on your lap during power sessions, as the metal can get warm to the touch. Again, nothing out of the ordinary, just something to note.
WiFi is also fast with the new ax adapter included., and audio output is adequate, or good enough, with the two speakers.
Should you want access to the components, you can do so by removing the bottom panel via 14 screws. Upgrades to 32GB RAM, different storage, etc, are all doable.
The biggest minus, to me, from making this a really good buy is the omission of a camera. The other cons, to me at least, are the placement of the power port and processor. Right in the middle of the chassis is never really thrilling placement. Added on, I think the quad-core processor is a solid entry, but also seems like a potential bottleneck down the line.
Overall, I think this laptop is great, and if it was priced roughly $150-200 cheaper I think it’d be a great buy. Either way, I would recommend.

Awesome, space-saving workout in one system
on January 28, 2021
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
If you're looking for a space-saving, all-in-one workout system that won't break the bank right now, the JAXJOX KettlebellConnect system may be just the one for you.
To start out, setup is easy and there's not much to unbox. There are the weights, the kettlebell, and a charging cable included.
Overall, these feel like high-quality weights and materials, with the clear LCD screen making it easy to see exactly how much weight is selected each time. In my week with the weights, used four times, I've never had any issue connecting or disconnecting weight amounts at any time.
To get the most out of the weights, it's recommended that you download and use the JAXJOX app, which is used to track your fitness to varying degrees. This is helpful for those who aren't used to kettlebell training, like me, as everything is in one place, making it easy to use and track.
Also, I've yet to need to recharge the base station after a full charge and usage for 30-min at a time, so the battery should serve you well.
The only real drawback about the system is that to get the most out of the JAXJOX workouts you'll need the premium subscription, which is another cost to factor into long-term usage. My only other concern with these types of systems is long-term use: will the weight selection start to break down as most tech does down the road?
Other than that, though, there's nothing to not like about the system itself. You can save a lot of space with the KettlebellConnect system, get high-quality workouts right on your phone all while tracking your own fitness, changing weight is seamless and easy to do, and the kettlebell itself seems to be made out of material that would last.

Great little air purifier
on January 25, 2021
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
This is my second air purifier in my house, and have to say that I'd easily recommend it to anyone looking to freshen up the air in their rooms.
To start, set up was fairly easy and took about 10 minutes total: just plug in the purifier, follow the steps provided, and then let the purifier do its thing. It's small enough to tuck away and very quiet, with no lights on it should you decide to toggle them off inside the app settings.
Once it's on and connected to wifi, there really isn't much else you have to fuss with daily or even weekly. The only maintenance recommended from Blueair is to change the filter every six months (which will be reminded to you via the app notifications and onboard buttons on the purifier itself).
From the app, you can set up different schedules and cycles for the purifier to go through daily, without having to do anything on the purifier itself. Being able to check all the different air readings via the app is very convenient and helpful. There are also alerts if the air is detected to be toxic (though this hasn't happened to me).
The only real con, in my opinion, of the purifier, is that it does use an app that could be updated and streamlined to function a bit better. Of course, since I've set my purifier to run on auto and cycle at different parts of the day, it's not really too relevant to me for daily struggles.
Overall, this seems like a solid purchase for anyone looking for a compact purifier for smaller rooms inside the house.

Great robot for one week
on December 26, 2020
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
Let me preface this review by saying this would get five-stars had I not had to send the vacuum back in for a warranty claim one week after receiving it. That out of the way, let's get into it.
First off, I've had a previous Shark Robot vacuum before, some three years ago, and wasn't too impressed with that one. Fast forward to now, though, and the company's robots have come a long way.
Let's start with the setup: very easy to assemble, instructions are quick and to the point. The only tricky part was pairing with the app to utilize wifi and cellular controls with the robot, but after a little bit of a connection issue we were all good (sometimes pairing with apps and onboard wifi can be tricky, of course.)
That out of the way, the robot needs to charge for six-hours. Once charged, it will go through its automatic mapping process, where it goes through your home twice to build a room map for cleaning. After this, it will go through a third time to detect carp to avoid during mopping sessions. This function worked well, in my experience. Once these actions are completed you can tweak the map accordingly via the app.
Speaking of the app, this is actually a lot better than the previous version years ago. Everything is easy to find and controls work when your robot is connected to wifi. The only annoying part from the app is the "support" section doesn't really exist; it simply takes you to their website or gives you a few FAQs to look over.
Once the initial process is complete, cleaning can start. Again, please remember that the Shark robot isn't meant to replace a whole vacuum; rather, it's meant to complement and help your house stay clean in between deep cleaning sessions.
The robot AI vision is very good, and never got stuck with my time with it; the only time the robot stopped cleaning was due to running over an uneven surface due to something being left out on the floor. The suction seems to be pretty good overall. Just remember to empty your bin after every clean, or you'll find that the performance will decrease.
Now, the only real cons for me are the mop reservoir seems to run out pretty quickly. It can't finish my downstairs area (roughly 800 sq ft) on one tank. The second is that I had to send the vacuum back for a warranty claim, which I'm still waiting to get my replacement back.
This all said, I was very impressed with everything so far. As long as the warranty department comes through, I would highly recommend this vacuum.

Solid projector for price, not professional use
on December 6, 2020
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
If you're simply looking for an easy way to up your screen size for movies, games or other media consumption, this projector is a solid choice. Please note that this isn't a HD or great quality picture, but for the price everything is good.
There are plenty of ports to utilize, which makes it nice. One drawback to the inputs, though, is that the projector can't recognize using USB as an input from another source. Again, the image quality isn't great at 800x400, which is not good by today's standards, but at this price, you shouldn't be concerned with that.
The menu system is straightforward and easy to use, and the focusing mechanism also is no frills.
While there isn't a carrying case to really make this "portable", it's small and lightweight enough to throw into a backpack to bring around, though the power brick is slightly bigger.
Also, while the projector can output sound, there is really nothing worth using as true sound. It's very harsh, as you'd expect from something this small. In fact, it's probably worse than your phone.
That all said, it's less than $100, so if you just want a big picture that can be used on a variety of surfaces, there's no reason you shouldn't pick this up! This is not for any sort of professional use; rather enthusiast or portable work stuff.

Best breast pump ever
on December 3, 2020
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
This is the best breast pump that's ever been used in my house. Onto baby two, we've tried many different electric and manual pumps, and honestly nothing is as effective, quiet, and easy to use as the Elvie.
Unboxing and set up are very easy, as there are instructions to guide you. The user friendly app is also super handy to help set things up, too.
You can sanitize all components, and there are different sizes to accommodate all breast sizes.
Speaking of the app, it's been something that, while unsure of at first, has become too easy to rely on. When using the Elvie hidden and unseen, the app will keep track of how much milk has been pumped and battery levels, along with some other data. Extremely useful in many different instances, and adds that extra level of confidence when using the pump.
Now, as for the actual pumping: it’s great. Certainly allows for ample milk production, and is virtually silent when doing so. Battery is also good, as after a full charge and weekly use I haven’t needed to recharge it. The pump action latches almost instantly and within 5 minutes you can have a solid supply.
The only really downside to the pump is that you probably don't need to buy the double pack, unless you have use for it.
All that said, I would recommend this to any other moms that are looking to ease the burden of pumping.

Great natural headphone, okay NC headphone
on November 14, 2020
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
Great sounding natural headphones with good NC features. This is the bottom line of the Shure Aonic 50 headphones, the first NC headphone by audio company Shure. Overall, these are a great sounding headphone for those that crave a natural soundstage, along with a tight, refined bass dynamic. The NC leaves a bit to be desired, though, so if that’s your first concern you may want to look elsewhere.
Build quality is solid, and overall I think they’re a comfortable headphone for 3-hour listening sessions. I didn’t test them for longer, but the foam on ear cups are plushy enough for comfort, but also seem quality enough to last. The metal construction also seems solid.
The biggest two gripes I have about the Aonic 50’s are the carrying case and the NC features. First, the case: it’s big, round, and sort of hard to fit in places. Plus, since the headphones don’t fold up they are a bit harder to lug around for trips and such.
As for NC, there are three modes, one to help hear ambient sound, one with no NC on, and another with NC on. This is distinct because each mode changes how the Aonic’s sound, and sometimes not for the better. The best pure sound mode. When you switch NC on, the headphones lose some of their range and the sound becomes more muffled, and muddled. This is sort of expected, but the profile is a noticeable difference. I much prefer the natural sound without any NC features on.
As for the wireless bluetooth connection, I haven’t had any issues with them, and overall battery life is good, roughly around 17-hours with two full battery drains tested, with some NC listening and some not. Charging is fast and the case can hold multiple cables, which is nice.
Again, I think these headphones are a welcome addition to the plentiful NC headphone scene, and should fit the sound profile that some are looking for. If you want a warmer, deeper sound, you should probably look elsewhere, though.

Hydroponics are the future of gardening
on October 21, 2020
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
I've had my Aerogarden Farm for two weeks, and I can say that so far, this thing is great. As an avid outdoor gardener for most of the year, I've always been curious on how an Aerogarden setup would work, and was excited to try one out.
Setup was a little tough with one person and took about an hour total. The only real con that I can note is that some of the framings seemed a bit off in terms of drill holes and such, and was difficult to align certain screws when putting together.
After it was complete, all I've had to do so far was plant the pods, add some fertilizer (provided with the pods), and let the Aero do its thing. Two weeks in all my pods have sprouted and are looking good. There's no mess, nothing to clean up every day, and everything can be controlled/checked on my smartphone thanks to Aerogarden's nifty app. The notifications are nice, and the app works well enough.
So far I have the Farm in my garage, where temps hover between 48-60 degrees (night vs day), so we'll see how the plants do moving forward. The LED lights give off enough heat that this shouldn't be an issue moving forward, but we'll see how the plants hold up.
Very excited to see what happens moving forward, and am interested in working with my own seeds, too. They make custom seed pods for you to try out our own plants and that will be my next step.

Sweet all in one cooker
on September 23, 2020
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
First off, if you've been on the fence of buying an air fryer, you should get one, and if you have a family of four+, then this Chefman may just be the one for you.
Upon unboxing, you'll be provided with some instructions on first time usage, etc. Set up is easy, and once done it's time to start cooking. The 9 functions all serve their purposes, and all are easy to access via the touch screen controls.
Simply select what you want to cook and the machine takes care of the rest. Overall, it's quiet, too, which helps when cooking things. There are a variety of cooking surfaces included so that you have the tools to bake, fry, broil, or toast with ease.
Also, the Dual-Cook mode is pretty nice for when you need to time certain foods to be done and stay warm for meals.
Honestly, the only con is size; it's a fairly large appliance to have on your counter. Of course, if you're replacing a toaster and a few other appliances like we were, it's not an issue.
Overall, this thing rocks, truly.
