Simple is the goal
on November 8, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
HP is going for simple with their line of "e" all-in-ones.
As the name suggests, this is a part of HP's "e" printers. Everything is intended to be wireless. No printer cable is included. It is intended to be used with HP+, which requires an account, in order to fully take advantage of its features. Setup is fairly straightforward. I just followed the instructions and did not run into any issues. It does use one ink cartridge for ALL of the colors. Now this is 100% to get you to buy a whole new ink cartridge when you run out of one color, and I don't think that is a smart thing at all. Very wasteful.
In terms of its all-in-one features, everything worked well. It can print crisp texts and documents. Color prints were ok. I would not print a photo album on this but it can print powerpoints no problem. It scans well. It copies well. It does not do double-sided printing and requires some manual labor for that.
All in all, the printer works well. I think HP continues to push its HP+ and smart features. This may work for some and not others. Subscriptions are not my favorite and the one color cartridge feels very wasteful and unnecessary.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

A good entry-level mirrorless camera
on November 8, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
So mirrorless cameras basically are as it sounds. They don't use mirrors. As a result, they are simpler. This results in them able to have smaller and lighter form factors. They are also quiet. A ubiquitous example of mirrorless cameras are in everyone's pockets! Phones are mirrorless cameras. One of the biggest "cons" of mirrorless cameras is that they do worse in low-light environments but technology continues to improve!
Right out of the box, I was just blown away by how light and small the Canon EOS R10 was. One might fall into the trap of it's small so it looks not professional. However, I would not count it out.
In terms of real-life use, it works well. The auto-focus was great. It closes in automatically on subjects. There are different modes that you can use. There is focus stacking where it takes multiple images with variable focus and then combines them to create one picture with everything in focus.Think of it as the opposite of the "portrait" mode that seems to be so popular these days. You can do panoramas. Videos are where mirrorless cameras shine. This can handle 4K videos.
Where this camera suffers is the battery life. I would carry around extra batteries when going out for a trip.
All in all, for the value, the Canon EOS R10 is a good entry level camera. It can take some great photos and videos. You can easily switch between them. With all of its features, you can continue to learn how to further customize things. It does suffer from a shorter battery life than most people would like, but that is something that all mirrorless cameras struggle with. You really can't go wrong with this camera if you are looking into something more serious.
I would recommend this to a friend!

A good simple all-in-one
on November 8, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
For a simple home or very small office (emphasis on very small), a printer like the HP Deskjet 4133e is a good option. It does all the tasks expected of a simple all-in-one well. It prints well. It can scan documents. I t can make copies. As long as it is not a workhorse, this printer fulfills all of the basic needs.
Setting up is straightforward. I would say I followed the instructions and did not run into any issue. Now you do need to activate HP+ and create an account to really take advantage of the printer's features. The smart functionality is convenient but not all people really need it. I am not the biggest fan of needing to create an account and these subscriptions for ink. Now in terms of connectivity, I tried both Android and Apple devices and had no issues. This being a "e" printer, it does not come with a cable and everything is done wirelessly. This may be important for a lot of people.
In terms of printing, I would say I got the advertised ~8 ppm for black prints and ~5 ppm for ones with color. The text was crisp and clean. For documents, they work really well. For color printing, I was pleased with the quality. It was decent. I would say even on glossy prints, it held up well. There is no auto feeder for double-sided printing. You have to manually do things. If you want to save paper and/or print 100 pages double sided, this printer may not be the one for you. Scanning worked well. I ran into no issues. Copies also looked crisp.
All in all, this is a simple printer that will get the job done. I mainly recommend it for home or maybe as a secondary printer in a small office. It is one of HP's "e" printers, meaning everything is wireless. It does require using HP+ and making an account to really use the features. It can add an extra step to everything when setting up but can make things easier down the road.

A complete package
on October 23, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
So the Denon Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer is a combination package at an attractive price. The catch is that it lacks many "smart" features that it's competitors have.
The design is simple and should easily fit in with the aesthetic of nearly every TV setup. I really like the fabric weave design. For some reason, it gives a "homier" vibe that I liked. Set up was easy. I used the HDMI ARC connection to take full advantage of Dolby Atmos. Once you connect the soundbar, you can then pair it with the subwoofer with just a push of the connect button on the back of the subwoofer. I did not have any problems with the pairing process. That is all you need for setup. When I said there are no "smart" features, there is no app, no EQ, no smart assistance, no Wifi connection. You can stream with Bluetooth but as mentioned no Wifi. You can change modes and have some control over the bass with the remote but that is it. It is a no fuss sound system that sacrifices other things to achieve simplicity. I honestly think that it works. Alot of people who buy these sound systems do not play with the EQ, fiddle with settings, etc.
The sound quality is great. It is a very balanced sound. The subwoofer provides powerful bass. Dialogue is crisp. Movies were an absolute joy to watch. I could listen to music and make out clearly the distinct instruments with little distortion even at max volumes.
All in all, I think this provides a simple package that will please the majority of people looking for a no-fuss sound system. I have found that I generally tend to not use "smart" features as much. Cutting these out have made for a much more affordable yet quality sound system and I am all for it!

What else do you need to know?
on October 23, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
I think Dyson has pretty much established themselves in the world of cordless vacuums. The V7 is still a great model and choice for those who want a top-of-the-line cordless vacuum. The Dyson V7 Advanced Origin will be replacing an older Dyson that I have been using for 10+ years.
Dyson's build quality is always something I am happy with. My former lasted a long time and I have no reason to believe this one will not. It always does a good job with cleaning. Cleaning the vacuum itself is easy.
In terms of usual Dyson criticisms, the trigger mechanism is always a point of controversy. With my first Dyson, I hated it at first. However, once you get used to it and realize you don't need a death grip to keep it activated, then you just don't mind it. That being said, it would be nice to keep it on constantly without having to keep toggling the trigger. Also, there are no removable batteries for the Dyson which can make vacuuming for a longer period of time frustrating. Other cordless vacuum brands sometimes have multiple packs which is very helpful. The Dyson V7 also seemingly takes a while to fully charge. I do not have the exact numbers but it did kind of blow the air out of the sails when you have to stop and plug it in for a while. There is also no wall mount compared to some of the recent models so you just kind of have to push it into a storage closet.
All in all, I really think you can't go wrong with the Dyson V7 Advanced Origin.

Good crisp microphone
on October 23, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
So this is clearly not for online video conferences. This is geared for anyone trying to get into streaming, podcasts, media creation, etc. I have been trying my hand at podcasts and these fit the bill.
Out of the box, I was pleased with the design. Razer products, in my opinion, always tend to have a clean and sturdy build quality. The Seiren V2 Pro was no different. It has a clean and crisp design without overdoing it. Despite it being a "professional-grade" mic, it is not professional music studio stuff that I would start singing covers on. It connects via USB. You do have to download their software but it is pretty straightforward. It comes with a base that you have to screw in.
In terms of getting good sound, you have to speak pretty close to it in order to get clear audio. If you do that, you get some darn good sounds. I am a newbie when it comes managing all of the different settings, but I was getting some good recordings. It does pick up all sorts of ambient noise and distorted sound that bothered me despite playing with the gain. If I was better at using the software, this would potentially not be a problem. I will continue to fiddle with it.
All in all, I am happy with the sound quality but do think it requires alot of fiddling to maximize its true potential.

The Fourtify Wi-Fi Security Kit is a great way to get more security for less. It’s easy to install and you’ll have multi-camera monitoring in the palm of your hand before you know it. Simply connect the main camera to power and your wi-fi network, then using the cables, connect the three additional cameras to the main camera. Having 4 weatherproof cameras allows you to have full perimeter protection and you’ll know what’s happening at any hour. You’ll have night vision, 2-way audio, True Detect heat and motion detection, and 1080p Full HD resolution.

Good camera for certain use
on October 23, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
For most people who don't need a continuously recording full-time security system, a system like the Swann Fourtify 4 Camera system is a good addition to your home. It won't break the wallet and give you some added piece of mind
Setting up the cameras was pretty straightforward. You do need to download Swann's app which will walk you through everything. There is one primary camera that also has a microphone and speaker while the other three secondary cameras do not have those functionalities.
So the Swann Fourtify cameras are motion activated, not continuously recording. I personally use them in the front door and poor areas as well as the backyard. They definitely work well. I caught the little raccoons who kept breaking into my trash can. I had my suspicions. The picture quality is 1080p. You can make out faces but I would not count on these to make out the minute details. Night vision is decent. All in all, the picture quality is what you would expect at this price point. Videos are stored on a microSD cart slot. You don't have to take the card and put it into your computer to pull files. You can actually do it through the app which was nice.
All in all, this is a good wireless camera system. It is more a complimentary system for your home with everything that is out there. If you need heavy security, this is not it. For the average home owner, these are a good addition.

Apex 9 mini will not disappoint
on October 23, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
So I have never tried a mini 60% keyboard before. I heard really good things about the SteelSeries Apex 9 Mini so I thought sure.
Obviously, if you are like me, you think "wow, can you really do everything you need with something 40% less than what you are used to?" The answer is surprisingly yes. Right out of the box, you notice how small it is compared to a full size. After I got over that, I was happy with the build quality. It has a mainly plastic chassis with an aluminum plate. It feels sturdy and durable.
One of the main selling points of this keyboard is the adjustable actuation switch. Basically, actuation means how much the key needs to be pressed in order for it to be recognized as being pressed. You can imagine that a lower number means slight touches will activate that key. This means faster response times. This would be ideal for gaming. This also means that errors are more likely to happen which may be less ideal for typing. So higher actuation points are ideal for typing while lower is ideal for gaming. This can do it both. You can set the actuation point at 1.0 mm for gaming which has the end result of super responsive and fluid gaming. The response times of the switches are also very fast. If you want to type stuff out, set the actuation point higher at 1.5 mm. The keycaps are also very grippy which for sweaty folks like me, is awesome. All in all, both gaming and typing were an absolute joy with these.
All in all, the Apex 9 Mini is a great keyboard. I would make sure you can get used to 60% keyboards and trying them out before actually buying one, but if you like them, then this one should be on your short list.

A good alternative
on October 23, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
Overall, a solid controller.
I am always weary of third party controllers. They do tend to be far less durable than the originals. Only time will tell if the MGC controller continues that trend. However, I have been pleased with this one. It is a bit more compact in size which you notice right away. I actually like the more compact size as does my wife. The joysticks and keys are not quite as tactile as the original keys. For some reason, all third party controllers struggle with this and just don't "feel as good" as my wife phrases it. However, they are decent enough to play games with the family. The white and black interchangeable switch plates are a nice touch. I actually do not like the red and blue on the joysticks and triggers, but just personal preference.
Setup was fairly simple. I could not get it to pair wirelessly so I just plugged it in. I did not have any troubles afterwards. The battery life also seems to be very good as I have not had to charge it since its initial charge out of the box. So far, in terms of actual use, they work great and I have not had any problems so far. All in all, I think it is an affordable alternative.

Experience fully immersive sound in a sleek, compact package with the Bose Smart Soundbar 600. Featuring Dolby Atmos, proprietary TrueSpace technology, and two upward-facing transducers, this TV speaker has the power to make you feel everything you play – whether you’re binging a new series, streaming this summer’s blockbuster, rocking out to your favorite artist, or playing a video game. For full immersion all the time, Bose TrueSpace technology intelligently analyzes signals other than Dolby Atmos, like stereo or 5.1, and upmixes them to create a multi-channel sound experience. The acoustic architecture of this Dolby Atmos soundbar squeezes five transducers – including two that fire upward – into a compact frame that fits perfectly under any television. With the Bose Smart TV Soundbar 600, you can stream content any way you want thanks to built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and Chromecast compatibility. This Bluetooth soundbar also has Bose Voice4Video technology and Amazon Alexa built in, so you can control your soundbar, TV and cable or satellite box with just your voice. Get a captivating sound experience that goes beyond simply watching with the Bose Smart Wireless Soundbar 600.

Just what I needed
on October 23, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
So I have been trying to find a simple sound system that will not absolutely break the bank. I was a bit reluctant on soundbars, but the Bose Soundbar 600 really blew me away.
Out of the box, I once again admired the build quality of Bose products. It is more compact than Bose's 900, and if I had to be honest, not as aesthetically pleasing as its predecessor. However, you can't win it all. You have options for connectivity with HDMI and optical. They have graciously included both types of cables. If you want to take full advantage of the Dolby Atmos, my understanding is that connecting HDMI ARC is the way to go, which is how I did it. It does have Amazon's Alexa for voice control which may be a con for others not in the ecosystem. It unfortunately does not support other smart assistants.
In terms of the sound, I was blown away by the crisp highs and mids. The bass was just enough for me, but obviously they do want people to buy the supplementary subwoofer if you crave that bass. There was no distortion or muffling. Film dialogue was especially crisp and I could actually understand it instead of depending on subtitles. Music was a joy to listen to.
All in all, Bose delivers a really good package that you cannot go wrong with.
