Good headset
on March 19, 2024

Logitech is no stranger to gaming headsets. The Logitech Astro A50 X Lightspeed Wireless feels like a one-stop shop for all your gaming headset needs.
First off, I just love the way the Astro A50 X look. There is not much that has changed from its predecessor. It isn't a quiet design and it isn't excessively flashy either. I love the way that the headband slides up and down. The vast majority of the headset is plastic but it still feels premium. It does not feel cheap (and definitely is not cheap). Build quality feels good for the most part. The earpads are comfortable and breathable.
Setup was the most annoying part of the process for me. The true advantage of the Astro A50 X is the ability to connect simultaneously to all the different systems. Otherwise, it probably is not worth it for most people. Now, due to the nature of all the different systems, it requires multiple cables and HDMI (which are not included). I am not the best with cable management so it took a while to make it make sense and pretty. Once set up, I was blown away by the performance. The sound quality is excellent. The mic quality is even better. I love not needing to pair-unpair every time. Now, the process is not always seamless as it does occasionally require an unplug/plug to reset but I was happy with the convenience. Unfortunately, this also means that it doesn't travel well with all of its wires.
All in all, I was really happy with the Astro A50 X. It definitely occupies a niche role for those with multiple systems.

A good air purifier but a little misleading
on February 24, 2024
Posted by: sollyp
In this day and age of pandemics and poor air quality, I feel like air purifiers have become very important. The Shark NeverChange Air Purifier is a good air purifier. The NeverChange in the title but claiming 5 year filter life is somewhat misleading.
Out of the box, I would say I have always liked the design of Shark products. They honestly all have a characteristic "Shark" look in my opinion. It looks fairly nice and premium. The front display is crisp and makes it look more modern in my opinion. These are pretty common to see in air purifiers these days. The information is pretty standard: air quality, particle count, fan speed, etc. You can toggle between them using the touch controls on top. I just left it in auto mode which adjusts fan speed based on air quality.
The Shark works well in my opinion. It does seem to crank up after I have cooked something, left window open, etc. It is not excessively loud once the air quality is good but when it cranks up it is noticeable. The "odor neutralizing" is just that it releases it's own air freshener scent. I did not care for it too much. It was fairly strong and has a chemical scent. You have to keep buying the tabs as well. Shark tries to extend the life of its HEPA filter by utilizing three layers before the HEPA. This works well and the outer layer is able to be cleaned freely. Cleaning these will also likely increase the life of the HEPA filter. By the way, the fine print of the 5 year claim includes "up to" so be aware of that. It is too new to be able to state definitively how long it will last in real world use but I suspect it will not.
All in all, I like the Shark NeverChange Air Purifier and really hope it lasts 5 years!

Great gaming mouse from Corsair
on February 24, 2024
Posted by: sollyp
The Corsair M75 Wireless Gaming Mouse shows that Corsair listens to feedback. It took alot of the criticisms from its predecessor the M75 Air Wireless and addressed them.
Out of the box, it shares alot of the design language as its predecessor. In fact, you probably can't tell the difference at first glance. The deisgn is simple. The RGB is a nice touch. It is still supremely light, weighing in at about 89 grams per Corsair. It is a touch heavier than the previous iteration (the Air Wireless was 60 grams). Competitive gamers may be able to tell the difference right away in a world where weight makes or breaks the game. However, to casual people like me, I can only truly tell when I try them side by side. The extra weight is due to other features that they have added. One of the big criticisms of the previous generation was that it was right handed only. Well, they have addressed this and made it ambidextrous. Performance is great as always and very responsive. First-person shooters were a breeze.
All in all, I really like the Corsair M75 Wireless. I think Corsair has made improvements based on feedback. If this is in your price-range, then I think it's worth a look!

A good combo vac and mop with caveats
on December 4, 2023
Posted by: sollyp
I have long been a fan of the Roomba. I got the first one back in the day and loved it. Now, several years later with alot of competition, the bar is set pretty high. The iRobot Roomba j5 tries to separate itself from the pack as a combo vacuum bot and mop bot.
The build quality seems decent. The basic Roomba formula remains the same across the years I feel. I have had fairly good luck with the various iRobot models in terms of longevity. In terms of functionality, it vacuums well in standard Roomba function. Now because of the two in one function, the bin is pretty small. I had to empty it fairly frequently. Add a shedding dog to the mix and I found that it needed to stop fairly quickly every time. I would find that it would not have finished vacuuming when I came home due to the need to empty the bin. The mapping function seems to work fairly well and it did a good job avoiding objects from my direct observation. The mop function is decent as well but it does seem to leave some areas uncleaned. It did not feel as thorough of a clean compared to the vacuum.
All in all, this is a decent combo robot vacuum and mop for the right people. I feel it is more specialized towards people with a smaller and simple space.

Decent budget headphones
on November 21, 2023
Posted by: sollyp
Anker used to make fairly good budget headphones so I was excited to try out the Soundcore Space Ones. There are ALOT of reviews out there. I believe Anker was aggressive with the sponsored reviews this time around. This is concerning.
Out of the box, there are not any surprises. The formula for headphones these days are the same for all brands these days. Shiny headphones that fold for some portability. The build quality seems decent. The frame is all plastic but seem heftier than you think. Alot of these headphones just put in random metal to increase the weight to trick people into thinking they are higher quality than they actually are. Honestly, only time will tell how durable these actually are.
Connectivity is easy. I immediately connected to my phone and played a bunch of songs. I have to say, the sound profile immediately out of the box was just wonky. The mids and trebles just don't hit the spot. It sounded tinny to me. Alot of the reviews say you can customize the EQ but the average person buying budget headphones will not be playing with the EQ settings. Even with playing with the EQ, I could not quite get it to sound the way I wanted. The ANC is decent for the price. I hate that phrase but there really isn't any other way to phrase it. It struggles with cancelling out lower frequency sounds to the point that my wife thought the ANC was not on when I was talking to her. If you raise the volume, then you can drown out most things.
All in all, these are decent budget headphones. If you are willing to pay just a tad more, then you can get significant jump in quality with other options. I do think alot of the sponsored influencers were very generous with their reviews.

Good casual use
on November 8, 2023
Posted by: sollyp
In this day and age, it really is hard to find a mid-priced decent desktop. Indeed, some might say that you really don't need one with laptops and a HDMI cable. If you need more processing power, then you might just opt for a premium and pricier desktop. However, I do believe that these mid-tier desktops have their place. The ASUS D500 desktop is an option to look at.
Out of the box, I was happy with the build quality and aesthetic. ASUS is not trying to reinvent the wheel here. It is just meant to be a simple minimal barebones desktop for small business or home office use. It feels solid and looks like it belongs in an office. Now the page describes it as an ultracompact and sleek form factor which is a bit of a stretch.
In terms of features, it really is minimal. Some of the pictures show an optical drive but it does not have one which I do believe is a miss in a small business or home office use computer. Not everyone is utilizing the cloud. Several small businesses including mine depend on good old CDs. You can make the argument that CDs are outdated and I should not knock it for that, but then there is a lack of USB-C which at this point is ubiquitous in technology and makes it feel outdated. The page lists it as having one so I looked for it but I could not find it. The stock photos and descriptions may just be recycled over and over again among several similar desktops. It does feature a decent processor which is better than what you could find in a laptop of similar price range. Performance was decent and it stayed pretty quiet and fast. I would not game on this but some light casual gaming is fine. The ability to upgrade components is severely limited due to its power supply but it is repairable.
All in all, it is a simple desktop that if you are aware of its limitations, it should work for the small business/home office use.

Good quality keyboard
on November 6, 2023
Posted by: sollyp
Corsair is no stranger to the gaming space and have a good track record when it comes to their products. The Corsair K70 Core RGB mechanical keyboard does a lot of things well with alot of flagship features.
Right out of the box, despite being full-sized, I noticed that the K70 Core felt just a tad smaller than my other full-sized keyboards. I definitely didn't think it was a negative. It feels more sleek and minimalist. The top is aluminum and bottom is plastic. The build quality definitely feels sturdy. It does not feel cheap. The design feels nice and modern. It is fairly simple as far as color scheming, but it does have RGB lighting which at this point feels like a requirement. The K70 Core is not wireless which is something to be aware of.
In terms of features, I am obsessed with the dial. Its a metal dial and it just feels so satisfying to scroll it. You can control the volume, unmute, mute. You can configure it even more but I did not really customize or play around with it. You have your basic media control buttons. You can also customize the RGB lighting. In terms of the keys, they used the MLX Red linear key switches. I believe they are new from Corsair as I have never used them before. I was thoroughly impressed with them. They feel great and the sound-dampening was decent. It performed great.
All in all, its a simple and minimalist keyboard in my opinion. There are several competitors at this price point that offer a bit more features, but the Corsair K70 is definitely worth considering.

A SUPER lightweight gaming mouse
on November 6, 2023
Posted by: sollyp
The Corsair M75 Air wireless is a premium gaming mouse meant for high performance. Corsair is no stranger to the market and I think they did a good job with this mouse.
Right out of the box, the first thing that you will notice is just how lightweight it is. 60 g is nothing to laugh at. This is legitimately the lightest mouse that I have used. I thought that I needed to put in a battery because it just felt so light. It may make you think that build quality was sacrificed to achieve the weight. While it certainly is not made of premium materials and some features were sacrificed to achieve the weight (going minimalist with the buttons), the build quality is still solid. Nothing was rattling or creaking and the buttons did not feel cheap. The design is fairly inconspicuous but I actually like that it does not scream gaming and that you can use it casually.
In terms of performance, the DPI of 26000 really shows. On first-person shooters, it really did feel like it was making a difference. At first, I thought the lightweight aspect might actually be a detriment as most are used to having a bit of weight but I actually think it was not a factor at all and probably helped reduce fatigue. Ergonomics are great. I loved how comfortable it was even with 4-5 hours of use. Battery life is claimed to be 45 hours on the 2.4 Ghz connection and 100 hours with the Bluetooth. I did not do any formal testing but it certainly does seem to be around there with the 2.4 Ghz connection at least.
All in all, I think it is a good gaming mouse with premium performance. I do think that cutting out features and buttons (preventing it from being a true ambidextrous mouse) was a miss.

A good ecofriendly laptop!
on October 24, 2023
Posted by: sollyp
Right off the bat, I love what the Acer Aspire Vero is trying to do. Acer is incorporating greener practices and recycled materials into this line.
Starting from the packaging, the box is made from recyclable packaging and is also recyclable. There is cardboard packaging in lieu of plastic packaging such as around the charging brick. The plastic bag is made from recycled materials. I feel like these practices could be extended to all mainstream products and not just the green Vero line.
The laptop itself is made from recycled plastics. I believe the quoted number is 40% PCR (post-consumer recycled plastic). The only thing that gives it away is if you look closely, it appears to have bits and pieces almost embedded into the plastic. It does not take away from the aesthetic at all, and, if anything, I actually really like how it looks. Regardless of whether or not the look appeals to you, it would not mean anything if the material is crap. Happily, I have to say that the build quality feels decent. The chassis feels nice and sturdy.
It's got good port selection as you can see. Jumping straight into the user experience, the screen is unfortunately not great. The brightness is about 300 nits and it shows. It is perfectly fine in indoor use but any sort of sunlight and I was struggling. The color accuracy was fine. The battery life is great. I was easily getting 10-15 hours with light streaming and browsing. The keyboard isn't bad and feels fairly responsive for a mid-tier laptop. The trackpad was actually great and felt good to use.
All in all, the Acer Aspire Vero is a good laptop for those looking in the mid-tier department while also trying to maintain a greener standard.

Great relatively affordable gaming monitor
on October 3, 2023
Posted by: sollyp
Honestly, with high end gaming monitors costing more than a couple thousand dollars, I just wanted a relatively more affordable one that made more sense for the average gamer. I really think that this ASUS TUF 27 LED monitor will fit the bill for the vast majority of people.
Packaging wise, I was pleasantly surprised at the box design. It definitely came off a bit fancier than I expected. It wasn't the generic cardboard but blacked out with the ASUS TUF marking on it. Inside the box, I was also pleasantly surprised by how many cables are in there. It came with a DisplayPort, HDMI, and USB cable included on top of the power cable. I feel the budget monitors can be minimal with what they include so this was a nice touch.
Setup was easy. In terms of real-life usage, I have to say that the features of this monitor are quite excellent. I think the curve can be hit or miss but its not too aggressive at 1500R and I think is done quite tastefully. The speakers are not going to blow you away but they get good volume. You can rotate the monitor too. The response time was great and the 240 Hz refresh rate is legendary. The image quality was about as good as you can get on an IPS panel.
All in all, a great monitor for the average gamer!
