Extra security for you
on July 24, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
In this digital age, you really need all the security you can get.
The Norton 360 is highly regarded for good reason. I personally am not a fan of the subscription model that EVERYTHING seems to be headed towards but the Norton 360 has good value with all that it offers. Setup was simple and straightforward. I think the app could be a bit more stream-lined but it was easy to use. The anti-malware works very well. It uses machine learning and constant updates to make sure you are protected. Meanwhile, it is the other utilities that come with the Norton 360 that make it more valuable. The dark-web monitoring is useful. I am a fan of the VPN. VPNs are almost a must-have in this world. It can really protect you and prevent tracking and theft of your digital data. Turning it on and off was very simple. It had great access to sites. I have used VPNs that did not have access to sites like Netflix. The Norton fortunately does work with Netflix (although not Disney+). There is a drop in speed that happens with VPNs. There was a speed drop with the Norton 360 but definitely tolerable and well worth it in my eyes for the extra security. I enjoyed the cleanup functionalities and I do think it helped keep my PC performing well.
All in all, the Norton 360 is highly regarded and comprehensive. I think it provides good value and must-have functionalities in this digital age.

I just love this thing
on July 24, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
I unfortunately do not live in the safest part of town. There have been a string of break-ins and robberies. The Lockly Vision Elite Deadbolt Edition could not have come sooner.
This really has everything that you will need. I have seen Lockly products before and have always been pleased with their quality and ease of use. I was not disappointed with this one. The build quality just feels solid, sturdy, and overall excellent.
A quick review will let you know that this lock has a BUNCH of features. Starting from the setup, it was fairly straightforward. I am fairly comfortable with tech but DIY stuff around the house is not my forte. That being said, even I was able to set this up with the included instructions. The lock itself looks very sleek and modern and is a stark contrast to my crappy beaten up door. Needless to say, if I move or change doors, I am taking the Lockly with me. The app was very easy to setup.
In terms of the features, the listed features sounded too good to be true. Lockly really thought of everything when it came to this lock. It can record 1080 video and it is stored in the included 32 GB SD card. I give extra points for the INCLUDED SD card. No subscriptions to a proprietary cloud system. It has motion sensors that work great. It can also send notifications and auto-record when someone tries to mess with the lock or enters the wrong code too many times. The two-way audio is crisp. Night vision works great. My favorite feature is the fingerprint reader. You can apparently add up to 99 fingerprints. It worked very well. At least when I tried tricking it, I could not. I felt it was fairly accurate. You can also take advantage of its "smart" functions and use the app or your choice of smart assistant. I found myself not really relying on those functions. The solar panel is a brilliant touch. I am not sure if it is working but I guess I will find out soon.
All in all, I really can't express how pleased I am with the Lockly. I feel like they thought about nearly everything about what a consumer would want in terms of an electric lock/smart doorbell/camera/etc. It truly is feature-packed and a good buy for anyone who wants some extra security.

Just a lot of fun
on June 30, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
This just doesn't really need an introduction. The Hover-1 Turbo is a hoverboard with a go-kart attachment.
It was nicely packaged, but that wasn't what we cared about. We got to assembling it right away which was very simple. You typically assemble the go-kart attachment first and then attach it to the hoverboard via Velcro straps. The build quality of the attachment itself seemed fair. It did not feel like the attachment would snap in half any time soon. Attaching it to the hoverboard was a bit more concerning. I am not sure the Velcro straps were the greatest choice. The durability of the straps is definitely something to think about as even a few days of use has caused some wear-and-tear on the straps. I imagine you will have to replace them fairly frequently. A lot of adjustment is needed when you attach it to the hoverboard to find a comfortable sweet spot for you. The wheels also tended to wear down from riding on asphalt which was not ideal. I am not sure if there is a way to replace them.
You should be aware that the hoverboard is VERY sensitive. I am sure you have seen multiple videos of people falling, tripping, crashing into things. Seems common sense, but my suggestion is turning off the hoverboard when attaching the go-kart attachment. That way it doesn't speed away from you. I would also advise that you turn it on while you are on it. For some reason, I guess the pressure from the go-kart does activate the hoverboard to make it move. Once you are on it and the hoverboard is on, you should be ready for some serious fun.
I felt like a kid again as I zoomed down the street. The listed max speed is 7 MPH but it feels SO much faster when you're that low and close to the ground. The maximum operating range is 6 miles. To be honest, I think I was getting closer to 3-4. It may be because the max range wasn't thought to be for large grown dudes. Charging took around the advertised 4-5 hours.
All in all, the Hover-1 Turbo is a lot of fun. It makes everyone feel like a kid again and you get smiles from everyone as you zoom down the street. That being said, I would not recommend riding on roads. Cars just can't see you. There is a flag extension but I don't think that it would help. The long-term durability is also somewhat questionable when it comes to the wheels and straps. But for those who just want to have some fun, this is it.

Good value mesh system
on June 30, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
My place is not that large, but unfortunately is long and narrow. The router is in the living room and my bedroom is on the other end of the hall which is separated by a closet, bathroom, and boiler room with washer/dryer from the living room. I was paying for fiber internet with supposed 1 GB speeds (not really), but I was barely getting 50 MB/S in my room. I could not get reliable WiFi in my room! The previous solution was literally buying a long Ethernet cable so that I can put the router smack dab in the middle of hallway closer to my room. A very unpractical and ugly solution, so I really needed a mesh system.
The Deco AX4300 was exactly what I needed. It looked nice enough out of the box. The build quality was decent. Setup was very straightforward. Like most mesh systems these days, everything is set up through the app. The app is fairly user-friendly and simple. It is definitely geared towards the layman. I had no problems with it. You set up each node which may take a bit with the firmware updates and then you should be good to go! For me, there really wasn't any strategic node placement needed. I just placed them in a straight line, and I was ready.
I was VERY happy with the speeds. Previously, if you stood right next to the router, I was getting about 600 MB/s. In my room, it would seriously drop to 50 MB/s which made streaming tolerable and impossible for gaming. With the mesh system, I was getting 500 MB/s. It was just a night and day difference. I even decided to push it and went outside and I was still getting 100-200 MB/s speeds on my phone.
For me, honestly there are a lot of mesh systems that work well. I had no doubt about the Deco AX4300 performing poorly in this day and age. However, the aesthetic and minimalism look is what really makes them valuable to me. No more ugly Ethernet cable running down the hall. They are small and minimalist. A lot of guests even think that they are aroma diffusers or something. All in all, they work for me!

Our baby monitor was built with the same Rexing standards and will prove to be the best personal babysitter. Our baby monitor stands out as it can record 720p video and Audio, all while alerting you if your baby is crying or if the temperature gets too hot or cold. Also, help your baby sleep faster by setting up and playing up to 8 lullaby songs.

A good no-frills baby monitor
on June 21, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
A good simple baby monitor is what you get.
Out of the box, you get the camera, monitor, and the power cables for both. They are unfortunately micro-USB and not USB-C. While they did not feel flimsy, I was not too impressed with the build quality. The monitor is a lot lighter than I expected and while weight does not correlate with quality, it also did not feel like it could hold up to a lot of abuse.
Setup is very straight forward. The monitor and camera pair instantly. I did not test the 1000 feet claim too hard but the monitor stayed connected to the camera at opposite ends of my place. The image quality is decent. It is supposedly 1080p but records 720p video. The image quality is just decent enough to make sure the little one is not up to no good. Of note, you have to have your own micro SD card if you want to record. You can zoom in 10x without too much loss in image quality. Of note, I could not find a way to zoom in less. It is either 10x or normal. I just found myself not using the zoom function. The night vision is decent so it definitely can give you peace of mind at night. The lullaby feature was a nice touch. You can choose between eight lullabies. It keeps going until you stop it so it would have been nice to have a timer or automatic stop.
Some issues that I had were with moving the camera. So you can control the camera view with the monitor. The controls were....very frustrating. There is a lag and you have to hold for a few seconds before the camera registers it and starts to move. Honestly, getting the correct positioning because of this lag was already annoying. In addition, the control icons were not too accurate. I have fat fingers but the controls are wide enough apart that there shouldn't have been issues. Sometimes I would want it to go left/right, and it would go up/down and vice versa. There is also no tactile feedback. This where physical controls probably would have been better. I tended to just try and not use the video controls. The temperature monitoring is a nice feature. However, it constantly blinks on and off. Which can be really annoying. In addition, I wish I could turn off the volume when toggling through the menu. It is loud and annoying. Unfortunately, it is tied to the volume of the audio too. The two-way audio is fine as well. The audio on the monitor side is a little soft but talking through the camera was decent.
All in all, it is a decent simple baby monitor. The lullabies are a nice touch. It does have some details that cause mild annoyances. While not the most expensive baby monitor, it definitely is not cheap so it would be nice to address the small things.

The Mysa Smart Thermostat for Air Conditioners is the premium smart thermostat that's designed to control your home's electric cooling and heating by interfacing with your non-central air conditioning unit. Say goodbye to that unit's inefficient LCD remote and take full control of your window, portable, and ductless mini-split heat pump AC units from anywhere using the Mysa app on your smartphone or tablet. Each smart thermostat pairs with a single unit. To control multiple units, purchase additional thermostats then use the Mysa app to control them all. Clean minimalist smart thermostat
on June 21, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
Right out of the box, I really liked the minimalist look of the Mysa smart thermostat. It accomplishes all it needs to do with just some LED lights. Most of the heavy lifting can be done via the app so this worked for me. Of note, you should really make sure that your AC is compatible with this device. There is a list on the company's website. Regardless of the reported compatibility, there does seem to be issues with setup even with compatible units as I am sure multiple reviews have mentioned. Fortunately, my unit had initial struggles, but eventually was able to get connected.
In the box, you will find the Mysa thermostat, a micro USB cable, the power adapter, the stand, and velcro strips. I was a bit disappointed with the use of micro USB as opposed to USB-C but it works fine so I won't make a big fuss. Now, the reason why a stand is included is that you don't have to wall mount the Mysa! They do include the velcro adhesives in case you do. I personally liked the stand and placing the Mysa on a counter. Given that the unit isn't too heavy, you do have to hold it in place while tapping on the screen but otherwise, I actually thought it added a nice aesthetic touch to my office. The design is very sleek and minimalist. It's got buttons on the sides to control modes and fan speed. It was very simple for me. It may require multiple clicks to get to the mode/fan speed you want but I really thought it was simple to operate. Otherwise, the app controls most everything so this does not need to be the case.
Pairing is supposed to be straightforward with compatible units. You connect the Mysa to your phone and wifi. You point your AC remote at the Mysa and press the power button and you should be good to go. I had a couple hiccups with this for some reason despite it being compatible. Eventually it did work. This does seem to be a problem that multiple users are having and some just have not been able to connect.
Once I did connect, it was nothing but a smooth ride. It does the thing that you expect smart thermostats to do. You can set schedules, turn on/off remotely, etc. It is compatible with the big smart assistants. The app could be a bit more user-friendly but all the functions you need are there. It was quick and snappy and I did not have major issues otherwise. Once I set the schedule, I honestly didn't have to think too hard about it other than the fact that my office was now at a perfect temperature without me having to think about it.
One thing to note, the two dots in the front above the Mysa logo are light and proximity sensors but they are currently inactive. Mysa is working software updates so that eventually it can control brightness based on ambient light and automatic sleep/wake when you approach the device. That is something to look forward to.
All in all, a very solid smart thermostat to basically use your mini-split like you would a central AC system and adding smart functionality.

Affordable version of popular wireless version
on June 21, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
Like the title suggests, this HS80 is a wired version of the wireless version that had great comfort, great sound quality, impressive mic. By taking out the wireless aspect, they were able to bring down the price point a fair bit.
In terms of build quality, I may be biased, but I have always been impressed with the solid build quality of Corsair products. This one is no different. It does have quite a bit of plastic as you would expect at this price point but it is thick and combined with the aluminum, it is fairly sturdy. The earcups can be rotated and the memory foam they use is quite comfortable and cool although I do tend to sweat alot during longer gaming sessions. One design element that is brought up for the HS80 is the headband adjustment. It is adjusted with velcro. This was not a problem for me as I am the only user but if you have multiple users, then having to adjust via velcro every time can be a pain. Otherwise, the comfort of the headphones is really not an issue. While the comfort level will not be world-class, I did not mind wearing the HS80 for longer gaming sessions. A couple things to note. This is most definitely for PC gaming. The cord tops out at 71 inches and is non-removable. This makes for a comfortable length when PC gaming but definitely not for consoles. Another thing to note is that the "RGB" is not as strong as other options. The logos on each side and the microphone light up. That's about it. I am not crazy about RGB on gaming headsets so this was a non-factor for me but to each their own.
In regards to performance, the audio quality shines. Gaming, streaming movies and TV shoes, and music. This was excellent at all of them. I often picked up details that I could not otherwise hear with just speakers. Overall, I was very impressed with the audio quality. The mic is even better. I truly think that the mic is up there with the top-level headsets. My voice recordings were clear and crisp. No problems with communication. It also does a fairly good job of blocking out ambient sound.
All in all, I think the wired HS80 is a good buy. I think it has solid build quality with good comfort. It absolutely shines in regards to audio quality and the mic.

No information overload
on February 16, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
I will say that I have used the Owlet smart sock before. While I was a fan, I thought that maybe the amount of information if gave could actually worsen anxiety for parents. Especially with the alarms. I think simplifying the information like the Owlet Dream Sock is actually the right move.
Setup is easy enough. You choose which of the 4 sock sizes work. Unfortunately, my baby has monster feet despite being 6 months, but I think the 18 month limit is great because past that, inquisitive babies just tear it off. Having just simple information about sleep quality is honestly all you need. When they are awake, they 100% are going to have supervision. And you will definitely know that they are awake. It is when they are sleeping that you want that peace of mind and monitor. So knowing about my baby's sleep quality and how I can make adjustments is more valuable than knowing my baby's oxygen saturation 24/7. If my baby starts getting restless, you get a notification for assist to come and help soothe.
Just like the information you get on smartwatches, it tracks the times when the baby is awake, in light sleep, in deep sleep, and in REM sleep. Battery life is awesome. Charging is very quick. All in all, I have been very happy with it!

All the hype you need
on January 8, 2022

I love this speaker. I really didn’t know that I needed it, until I got it. So I have to speak occasionally at church to my group. We do not have a good audio setup. With the social distancing and whatnot in a pandemic, its important to be able to speak to everyone in large spaces. The Bose S1 Pro does it all. I use it as a PA system after hooking up my microphone to it. If things get boring, I can connect my phone and play some music. I hook up my guitar and boom, it’s a mini-concert! It really outperformed all of my expectations.
Right out of the box, the S1 Pro was alot smaller than I expected. I had mixed feelings as I was happy it was more portable than I expected, but the smaller size had to come with a sound tradeoff. I was wrong. The speaker has a very clean aesthetic like what we expect of Bose. I was happy with the build quality. You can either connect via bluetooth which is quick and easy or via the XLR which is even quicker and easier. You are all ready to go.
In terms of sound, I was blown away by how loud it got. So that certainly exceeded my expectations. It’s got great balanced sound with minimal distortion even when you max the volume. It definitely filled the hall indoors. I tried the speaker outdoors as well and it still held up. One thing you should be aware of, the power cord is only 6 feet long. I always carry around an extension cable because of this. Honestly, I am tempted to buy this “optional battery” because it would just make this so much more versatile.
All in all, I love the Bose S1 Pro. It’s a great versatile speaker and PA system.

Even more deterrents
on January 8, 2022
Posted by: sollyp
from Atlanta, GA
Always a big fan of Swann products. I already have owned a couple of Swann surveillance systems and have been really happy with them. The Swann Pro Enforcer 8-Channel 4-bullet 4K surveillance system is definitely the most advanced system that I have owned so far.
Setting up security cameras is always the hardest part. Especially with the wiring and whatnot. However, if you want that reliability, then it really is the way to go. Swann does help alot with the process by having a great guide. Admittedly, when setting up Swann systems, you have to use the on-screen keyboard which can be annoying to type with. You cannot use a physical keyboard at all. Believe me, I have tried. Once you have set everything up, it should be smooth sailing!
Now for the quality and features. 4K is awesome. Image quality is great. However, what you should be aware of is that the 4K videos are capped at 15 fps. This goes up slightly to 20 fps when you decrease the resolution to 1080p but still fairly slow. This can make images fairly choppy and I did find it a bit disappointing especially when compared to the image quality. In regards to its other features, it really is packed with all the deterrents you need. It has heat and motion sensors! This can activate the red and blue flashing lights and sirens. It can trigger awhite spot light. It also has a microphone and speaker so you can have two-way talk. At night, it has night vision which works incredibly well. You can control all of this from the Swann Security app. It does require registering and creating an account, although you can use one account for all of your Swann systems.
All in all, I am a big fan. It gives you peace of mind. You can make sure your family is protected even when you are not around. I would keep the Swann Pro Enforcer on your short list of surveillance systems.
