A good value baby monitor
on December 20, 2021

The Vava baby monitor is a no-fuss, easy to use baby monitor for those who just want a simple plug and play option.
Right off the bat, setup is very simple. The camera is already synced with the monitor so when you plug in both devices, they pair. You should be up and running without too much fuss. The camera has to stay plugged in while the monitor does have a battery so you can unplug it and it will last up to 24 hours if you only use the audio and up to 10 hours with video. The camera uses a micro-USB port while the monitor uses USB-C port. I think the micro-USB is a little outdated but the camera really does not need the capabilities of USB-C.
The monitor itself is nice. It is 720P and the video quality is good. I was more impressed with the audio quality. It is clean without too much broken static even with crying. The speaker function is also nice as you can talk to your baby. It can be helpful with your toddlers. The audio quality from the camera was fair. The range of the device is advertised as up to 900 feet. I really did not have any problems with range in my apartment.
So all in all, this is a really simple baby monitor without all the frills. You don't need wifi capabilities, connection to the cloud, or an associated app. It is a good quality baby monitor and gets the job done.

Alot of features

The Belkin Soundform Freedom True Wireless earbuds is meant to be a more affordable alternative for those seeking to not eat peanut butter jelly sandwiches for a month just to buy airpods. It is going all in on that group, as the Soundform App is only available in iOS. It even works with Apple Find My app which was pretty helpful.
Out of the box, they follow the current trend when it comes to the design. I actually liked the design aesthetic and thought it was a fairly sleek design. The build quality is decent. They feel fairly tough. I dropped them in the case a couple times on accident. Some dings on the case but it seemed to be fairly durable.
Set up is not as straightforward as native apple items but there is a very helpful guide online on the Belkin website. There are two buttons on the case. One of them is resetting while the other is used for setting up the Find My function. You can connect to bluetooth via keeping the case open or touching and holding the touch sensitive controls to pair. If you want to increase or decrease the earbud size then you can do that. Then, you are all set.
In terms of its features, it is definitely packed. It has the Qi wireless charging capability. You can charge via USB-C as well. It has touch sensitive controls that you can use for both calls and music. I thought the touchpads worked very nicely. It is one of the first and currently few third-party devices that are compatible with Find My. It is sweat resistant so it can handle a workout. It has sensors to know when the earbuds are taken out and auto pause/play. The earbuds have good range and I could go around the house without cutting out. They are fairly comfortable. The battery life is good. I did not get quite 8 hours, a little bit more than 7 but pretty close. You get about 4 more cycles from the charging case. I definitely was not charging regularly and I was getting by fine.
In terms of the sound quality, I feel like this is where it cut some corners. It definitely might be personal preference, but the sound was not too well balanced to my ears. The highs were overrepresented and the mids were quiet. The bass was actually not too prominent which is something all earbuds struggle with in my opinion. They were also a lot more quiet than I expected. Where these did much better is call quality. The Advanced Environmental Noise Cancellation works very well and usually I hate talking on earbuds and listening to people on earbuds but these worked well. In my opinion, these equal or even outperform more expensive buds when it comes to calls. However, not many people buy earbuds just for calls. The Advanced Environmental Noise Cancellation only works during calls and not during media consumption.
All in all, there are alot of features but I would say its main functionality of listening to media was where it struggled. It is definitely a more affordable option and even more so when it goes on sale.

A good hot/cold solution for joints
on November 21, 2021
Posted by: sollyp
from Atlanta, GA
I unfortunately have a lot of bad joints, so I was excited to get the Sharper Image Flexi Wrap.
There are three levels each for the heating and vibration functions. You have to hold each button for a few seconds to activate each. You can independently control each one. The vibrations shut off by themselves after about 15 minutes while the heating stays on for a couple hours. I never used it for that long.
I think the Sharper Image Flexi Wrap works best with small joints. For my shoulder, elbows, wrists, knees, and ankles, the wrap worked great. For these small joints, you can (and should) wrap around the joint multiple times. This allows for a good amount of heat and vibration. The vibration is really not that significant. I wouldn't say its a massage but for the small joints, I think it was pleasant enough. The wrap is long enough that it will wrap around the waist for people but the vibration is just too weak for it to be meaningful for back and abdominal pain. I also tried using it for my neck. They do have a dedicated neck wrap which I have not tried, but the flexi wrap is not too helpful for the neck. The vibrations are not a massage like mentioned previously and it does not work too well for this specific place. I would say that if you want just heat on the neck, then it is a decent option.
It is not battery powered and you do need an electrical outlet within reach. The cord is 9 feet which does allow for some mobility but honestly, you probably should just sit down and relax.
All in all, I was pleased with the Flexi Wrap. It definitely provided relief to my old joints. Just don't expect it to like a heated massage.

Even I can tell it tastes good
on November 11, 2021

So I love a good expresso, but by no means am I an expert. I wasn't sure I was one of those people who could tell the difference between good and great expresso. So trying out the Café Affetto Espresso Machine, I was shocked. You really can tell.
Right out of the gate, this machine is just so SLEEK and has the modern design aesthetic. It just fit well into the kitchen. The copper piece stands out and gives it a premium look. The build quality matches its aesthetic. It does not take up too much kitchen real estate. I just hoped that it made just as good of an expresso. So I love fidgeting with gadgets, but I thought it was going to be complicated using this one. I just did not have experience with expresso machines.
Right off the bat, you need unground coffee beans. Can't get the already ground stuff. Then, you gotta play with the grind settings. Everyone has their own individual preferences. I liked the default grind size and set the grind time to the max. I would play around with the different combinations of size, time, and beans to find your sweet spot. All of these factors really do make a subtle difference. Once you find your favorite, you stick with it! I was really impressed with how easy it was and how good it tasted! Everything is just automatic. My dad who is an expresso aficionado, was also impressed with it. There are definitely better expresso machines out there, but the usability makes it worth it for the average person. The steam wand for your milk is also quick and easy to use.
All in all, this is a great expresso machine for simple people like me. I think the strength lies in how easy it is to use and everythings just automated so there is less room for people like me to mess up on. Nothing beats waking up to a quick expresso in the morning.

Now we are at 14!
on November 2, 2021

Ninja keeps going big. They really are going hard into the multifunction route. I am a huge fan of multifunctional tools and gadgets. They help simplify life and save space. This is truly going all in on that concept.
The “14 in 1” claim comes at a price. This thing is HUGE. It is also HEAVY. I definitely feel like I strained my back lugging it into the kitchen and lifting it up onto the countertop. Before buying this behemoth, I think it should be clear that this is clearly meant for larger families in larger spaces. The cost-benefits probably don’t work out as well for smaller families in smaller spaces. This thing takes up a lot more space than you think. The hope is that it will replace a lot of devices as well. Given that now you have one lid for all of the functions, it is heavier. I will say that I do not think my mom would be able to use this device freely.
The 14 functions are: Pressure Cook, Steam & Crisp, Steam & Bake, Air Fry, Broil, Bake/Roast, Dehydrate, Sear/Sauté, Steam, Sous Vide, Slow Cook, Yogurt, Keep Warm, Proof. Now to be completely fair, some of those are kind of redundant. However, I can attest that for real use, they each do have their function. I found myself using all of them in some way, shape, or form. I can attest that they do indeed work very well. I have always had trouble with pressure cooking rice on Ninja appliances. This was no different. However, it did an excellent job with pressure cooking chicken. The steam and crisp worked well with meat. Be sure to not overload the space. The steam and bake worked a lot better than I expected for making jiggly cheesecake. Air fryer works great. This was probably my most used function. Broil, bake/roast was probably not used as much but I did use them for quick pizzas and such. I dehydrated some fruit for some healthy snacks. I honestly probably wouldn’t do it again. Space is just too limited for it to be worthwhile compared to a dedicated dehydrator. I sous vided and seared a steak. I probably would just go to my cast iron pan and sous vide circulator to be honest. It doesn’t circulate the water and nothing really just beats a good cast iron sear. Didn’t try yogurt. Keeping warm keeps food warm. I definitely proofed dough and it was awesome.
All in all, I think this is a good kitchen device? Appliance? I do think they added some functions just for the sake of adding functions and upping the number to 14. The size and weight are also some limiting factors. I don’t think my parents could lift it and it may take up too much space in a smaller kitchen. Otherwise, I do think for those looking to simplify their life and you have the space and number of mouths to justify it, then the Ninja Foodi 14-in-1 is a good option.

Sweet zone of value
on October 26, 2021
Posted by: sollyp
from Atlanta, GA
The Anker Life Note 3S earbuds are trying to hit the sweet zone when it comes to value. I definitely think it is a good bang for buck earphones.
In the box, it comes with the earbuds themselves, the charging case, and the USB-type C charging cable. The packaging itself is just what you would expect. The earbuds themselves have a simple design that follows the existing trend. I didn’t mind them. They are not particularly premium feeling or looking. It is all plastic. In terms of comfort, they feel good in the ears. I did not have any trouble with them falling out, but I did not do any strenuous activities. They are IPX5 waterproof so they can handle sweat.
The sound quality was good. I have to say they were better than expected. Good mids and highs. Vocals sound clear. For those who want that bass, unfortunately, that is where these earbuds lack. Despite claiming 13.4 mm oversized drivers and BassUp technology, I did not think they lived up to that hype. I personally don’t care about the bass but I do know that it can be a dealbreaker for some. The call quality on these were excellent as well. I was very impressed with it. My phone is getting old so I have to use earbuds to listen and speak on calls. These performed very well. They isolate out background noise very well.
The battery life is about 5 hours. I was getting about that. This is definitely on the shorter end. You do get 30 more hours from the case and just charging for around 10 minutes should give you close to an hour. I hardly have an occasion to listen for more than 5 hours so this wasn’t an issue for me.
All in all, I like the Life Note 3S earbuds. They are definitely good quality for the money. The logo is definitely playing on a familiar brand but I guess whatever works. Otherwise, I think for those just looking for decent earbuds without spending an entire paycheck, these should be on your short list.

Good multipurpose blender
on October 16, 2021
Posted by: sollyp
from Atlanta, GA
Kitchen space is hot real estate in my apartment. Having multi-purpose use devices is key. The versatility of the Ninja Foodi Power Blender Ultimate System (that's a mouthful) is great for simple living.
Right out of the box, I was pleased with the aesthetic of the blender. It looks minimalistic. It's sleek and fits the modern look. It is a full-size blender so you can expect it to be bulky but honestly takes up less space than my previous one. The build quality is decent. Like everything these days, it is mostly plastic which does raise concerns about the durability. It is well-built but not premium. I would expect to need to replace parts (if available) within a few years. There are suction cups at the base to keep it from moving which is a nice thought.
You get three pitchers. The main one is 72 ounces. Then, it comes with two smaller pitchers, a 24 ounce "Nutrient Extraction" cup and a 18 ounce "Smoothie Bowl Maker with Built-in Tamper." The tamper helps with getting food off of the side and I found myself using it alot. Also, the pitchers and blades are dishwash safe.
The blending is excellent. With the smaller pitchers, it is even better. It is excellent consistency with smoothies. I tried making almond butter for the first and it was excellent! No chunks. The blender can also be used as a food processor. It truly is different. Blending is different from food processing. I always substituted food processing with my blender which ended up with less than satisfactory results but this does a decent job. I will give the caveat that it is not as good as a dedicated food processor but still does the job. Shredding vegetables are quick and easy. With the included instruction manuals, you can learn more about what the blender can do. I actually never tried the 7 Auto-iQ Programs but you can just use them as timers for smoothies, extractions, bowls, spreads, chopping, food processing, and dough. I just did everything manually but others seem to have had good results with them. I never tried making dough.
Cleaning is very straight forward. You just blend some water or soapy water. If there is still some residue, just throw it in the dishwasher.
All in all, a versatile multi-purpose device that helps simplify things. You cannot hot blend to my knowledge which is a bummer so a little out of luck for soups. However, I think it is a good buy for most people.

My first e-bike!
on September 26, 2021
Posted by: sollyp
from Atlanta, GA
I was so excited to get the SWFT Volt! I was looking for a bike that would help me exercise while being more eco-friendly. This was definitely a great start
Right out of the box, I was impressed with how it looked. It looked really sleek and did not look electric at all! The frame feels very sturdy while not being too thick housing the wiring. They really did a good job with the engineering to incorporate the system into the frame. You cannot ride it just right out of the box. There is some assembly to be done. You have to attach the seat, the handlebars, the pedals, and the front wheel. Assembly takes a few minutes and the manual goes over everything. Once you charge her up, you are ready to go! I will also comment that the silicone plug over the charging port does not really fit securely so be careful in wet weather or leaving outside, etc.
Right off the bat, you should know that this bike was designed for taller riders. It says 5' 9" and up. While I am 5' 9", my legs are pretty darn short so I noticed that my feet were not able to touch the ground. This could get very uncomfortable so be very aware! Fortunately, it is not a problem once you get riding. Coming to a stop may be a bit of a struggle. Without electric assist, it is just a regular single gear bike. I found it to be just the right gear for pedaling on flat areas. There is no suspension unfortunately so the bike clearly built for more of a gentle commute and not cutting through dirt roads, trails, or mountains.
The display with controls is on the left handle bar. You hold the power button to turn everything on. It shows your speed, distance traveled, time traveled, and battery. There are three different levels of pedal assist. Life gets SIGNIFICANTLY easier with just the first level. It almost feels like gear shifting as the resistance just drops. I usually keep it at level 1 so that I get some exercise (not really). If you do not feel like pedaling at all, you can use the throttle on the right handle to get full propulsion. PLEASE BE CAREFUL. It is more sensitive than you think and just revving it like a motorcycle may jar you and cause you to fall. If you want to be on cruise control, press and hold the down arrow on the controls.
The battery life was definitely less than the advertised 32 miles for me. I think it could be due to technique or using too much throttle but I still found it good enough to get around without worrying about the charge.
All in all, this has been an absolute joy. It really is fun to use and just go around town (bike friendly) areas and parks. My dog absolutely loves it as she can go full speed during her walks. This is a great first e-bike for those who just want to get into it.

Simple is best
on August 29, 2021
Posted by: sollyp
from Atlanta, GA
I am an avid believer that Chromebooks can fulfill about 90% of what most people need in a computer. The Acer Kenzo Chromebook 311 is all about cutting down to the basics of what most people need and gives you the pure ChromeOS experience.
In terms of design aesthetic. It really is geared towards practicality. I actually like the simple design. It is thin and fits well with the modern aesthetic. The thing that does stand out are the bezels. They are very thick. I think they easily could have fit a 13 inch screen but understandably that would increase the cost. On the bright side, the size and weight make it very portable. It really is ultra-light and was no problem transporting around. The build quality feels sturdy. I would not advise it but I think it could take a beating. The port selection also has the basics. It has a USB type C port which also functions as the charging port. It has a headphone jack, USB 2.0 port, and a lock slot.
In terms of the keyboard, I have enjoyed Acer’s keyboards in the past. This one was no different. It was comfortable and the layout was easy to get used to. You may feel a little cramped, but it was usable. The trackpad is decently sized given the size of the Chromebook itself. The trackpad similarly was fairly easy to use. The display is 1366 x 768. For those who are used to FHD and higher, text may seem a little on the fuzzier side. The screen itself is also dim. Smaller screens also mean more scrolling unfortunately which can be uncomfortable. Sound is also just decent. I would carry around headphones.
So the processor that this Chromebook uses is an ARM processor. Basically, these processors are designed to be as efficient as possible. They are much simpler, consume less power, and are less expensive. For Chromebooks, these are ideal because they do not have the same needs as full laptop devices. This translates into a much longer battery life for the Chromebook. The advertised battery life is about 15 hours and I truly was getting close to that amount. I would forget to charge and still have plenty of juice left for me to get to an outlet later. This is the greatest strength of the Acer Kenzo Chromebook 311. In terms of performance, it gets the job done. I had no problem using the wide extent of ChromeOS’s capabilities. I downloaded and used apps, web browsed, streamed, and edited some papers. I love using Citrix to access remote desktops for work and this could handle it. I downloaded word editing documents and those worked great. I watched a little Netflix in my downtime and that worked fine as well. It did stutter at times but it’s to be expected given the processor. Simple is best for this one without the clunkiness of a full laptop OS.
All in all, the Acer Kenzo Chromebook 311 is a SOLID chromebook. Are you getting the latest and greatest, most beautiful laptop? No, but you get a small, lightweight, and portable machine that performs decently well. It can perform all the tasks that Chromebooks can do. You don’t have to worry about your kids breaking a 1000$ machine and it is a cheap way to have a daily driver that can get beat up. It has all-day battery life. If you don’t need the extra stuff and just want a productivity machine, then this Chromebook is really perfect for you.
Pros
Good build quality
Excellent battery life
Full ChromeOS functionality - web browsing, streaming, all of the Google Play Store apps
Cons
Small, dull, low-resolution screen (compromises have to be made)
Bezels

Just middle of the pack
on August 29, 2021

I’m very familiar with the Dell Inspiron line. My laptop in college was an Inspiron and have had few since then. The Dell Inspiron line is meant to be just a decent laptop at a relatively affordable price. The Dell Inspiron 5000 2 in 1 14” does not break from that mold.
The design of the Dell Inspiron 2-in-1s have remained fairly consistent through the years. The 14 does not stray too far from the design language. It isn’t going to steal anyone’s thunder in the aesthetic game. It’s a no-nonsense and practical design that will fit into the office or school workspace. The build quality is decent. There is a little chassis and display flex. The case is plastic. I have had experiences where the paint starts peeling off with my old Inspiron 2-in-1s so be aware. The hinge feels secure, but I personally have had some failures with Dell Inspiron devices regarding hinge failures so I do think you get what you are paying for with the build quality. Longevity is definitely a problem with the Inspiron devices. Port selection is good. You get an HDMI, one USB type C, two USB type A, headphone jack, the power jack, and SD card slot.
I personally don’t really use the tablet form too much. They’re usually too clunky, heavy, or uncomfortable to use as a tablet. The form factor of the Dell Inspiron 5000 2 in 1 14 inch is not very conducive to use as a tablet because the bottom of the chassis is not completely flat. So there is a gap when you fold it completely. This just really makes it uncomfortable to hold. That being said, I do like 360 degree hinges. I like using the tent mode. The hinge is pretty sturdy so it holds up.
The keyboard is backlit. The keys have good travel. They are a bit mushy for my taste but I got used to them fairly quickly. The backlight has two levels. The layout of Dell’s keyboards have always been good for me. The trackpad is also comfortable to use. It was a bit more sensitive than I would have liked. Sometimes, I accidentally triggered it which did cause some inconveniences. The fingerprint scanner works well. It does sometimes take a second or third attempt or lag a bit. It won’t be Touch ID but it provides an easier way of logging in. The speakers are bad. They sound tinny and grating. They are also downward firing which further contribute to dim sounds. The volume doesn’t get too loud and I actually struggled to hear the sound in a room with AC going on. You should probably carry headphones with this one. The display is also not too impressive. It is dim. Color accuracy just wasn’t there and the contrast is low. Battery life has been good. I was getting 5-7 hours with normal usage.
In terms of performance, 11th-gen Intel is a huge step up from its predecessor. That being said, most users don’t even need that much power but the i5 processor can handle most things you throw at it. Casual gaming, casual video and photo editing are no problem.
All in all, the Dell Inspiron 5000 2 in 1 14” laptop is an average laptop. It’s meant to be an affordable option. However, budget laptops have gotten increasingly more competitive and there are better options out there.
