LTE is great but what about the others?

The Fossil Gen 5 was the best Wear OS smartwatch last year (my opinion). Fossil wanted to build upon that success by adding LTE. Thus, the Fossil Gen 5 LTE was born. In my opinion, they might have undershot it this time.
So right off the bat, the LTE is only useful if you are on the Verizon network. It is not compatible with the other networks. I think this eliminates a lot of potential buyers as there are very few LTE Wear OS smartwatches on the market. Also, the Fossil Gen 5 LTE is only compatible with Android devices. Unlike the non-LTE Gen 5 and Gen 5E which had support for iOS (you could make calls!), the Gen 5 LTE does not. While I know this may seem backwards, to be completely fair, the other OS smartwatches do not work with Android devices so I think this may be a double standard. Fossil is really catering to the Android market. With this information out of the way, on to the smartwatch itself!
The top of the box was transparent so you can see the watch when you get it. It comes with the watch itself, the charger, and the papers. The charger is a magnetic connector that is quite strong so you don’t have to worry about it disconnecting through the night. The watch band that comes with the watch is a silicone band. I personally prefer these as they are more durable, can work out in them, etc. If you do want a leather band, they are sold separately. The design is very streamlined. While very similar to the Gen 5, the Gen 5 LTE has much more subtle and less protruding buttons and dial which makes it seem more sleek and aesthetically pleasing. I loved wearing it. It looked good and felt good. The weight of the watch also makes it seem sturdy with good build quality. The 1.28 inch AMOLED display is more than large enough, crisp, and bright. I had no problem seeing it in sunlight.
In terms of the experience, Wear OS definitely lags behind its competitor unfortunately. However, this is not Fossil’s fault. The Gen 5 LTE still runs the latest version of the OS. Google Assistant is great. Fossil has a HUGE number of watch faces that you can choose from. Honestly, I didn’t even go through all of them. I found one I liked and stuck with it. In terms of the health features, I really enjoyed the heart rate monitoring and fitness tracking. It has all of the basic features that we have come to expect from smartwatches. Battery life is good. There are different battery modes. Daily, which is the most draining, keeps everything on. Extended turns off everything except Bluetooth. Custom, the most versatile, lets you choose which features are on/off. Time Only, which the watch reverts to when low on battery, just shows time. I used custom feature mostly because why not? Things like NFC and location were unnecessary most of the time. With custom, I was getting through 2 days without charging. This is definitely decent.
Now the main feature that differentiates it from its predecessor: the LTE. In order to use the LTE, you use Verizon’s Number Share service. You pay the activation fee and then a monthly charge. The watch actually gets its own number but phone calls/texts to your phone are forwarded to the watch. With this, you are able to receive calls and texts without being near your phone. This really does make a difference. Being untethered to your phone just is more convenient. The biggest case being workouts. You can listen to music and use GPS to track runs without holding a phone. So it really can function for a short bit as a substitute. Now, the watch speaker quality is a bit tinny but definitely passable. In terms of call quality, I wouldn’t say that they are the best but it’s a watch. Receivers did say that my voice sounded like I was speaking from far away but was still audible. I did notice that some calls would get dropped or even not go through at times so it isn’t 100% reliable. Texts are more reliable even if you don’t get them instantaneously. You can pair Bluetooth hearphones/earbuds to the watch so it looks less awkward talking to your wrist. LTE does drain the battery way faster, but I still could make it through the day.
The specs are where I feel Fossil kind of missed the mark. It is the exact same hardware as the previous Gen 5 (save for the LTE modem). The processor is the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 with 1GB RAM and 8GB storage. While I understand that this is literally supposed to be the same watch with just LTE added, it is almost 2 years after the original was released. This also does not bode well for future-proofing. The performance is still good with the old chips. The UI was smooth for the most part but did stutter occasionally.
All in all, the Fossil Gen 5 LTE is a good watch. It has the great features of the Gen 5 and adds LTE on top of that. However, it’s been two years and to make only the addition of LTE, which is network restricted, may be a deterrent for a lot of people. While it is still a good watch, people may want to wait for the next generation devices.
Pros:
LTE! Untethering really is freeing
GPS so you can track runs without your phone
Design is sleek with good build quality
Good bright display
Battery life is decent (but LTE does drain fast)
Google Assistant
Cons:
Limited to Verizon network
Old hardware other than LTE modem
Wear OS lags behind competition (can be buggy, less apps)

Low-cost printer for small offices
on May 6, 2021
Posted by: sollyp
from Atlanta, GA
HP out with another printer to fulfill your office needs. This one comes with HP+. I had no idea what this meant.
When it comes down to it, the Officejet Pro 8025e is a good entry level all-in-one printer. The unboxing experience was typical, nothing special. It comes with the printer itself, the ink cartridges (black, cyan, magenta, yellow), power cord, and the guides. The size is what you would expect from an entry level office printer. The display is 2.7 inches diagonally. It is a bit on the small size, but mostly every function can also be done remotely so I was not too concerned.
Setup was very straightforward. Setup is when you have to decide if you want the HP+ program or not. I will talk more about it later. First, I wanted to test out all of the connection options in order to print. There is a USB 2.0 port for direct printing. This worked as expected. My computer was able to find it and print. For wireless options, there are plenty. There is Wifi Direct, Apple AirPrint, Mopria, and HP's own Smart App. The only one I tried out was the HP Smart App. It really is the only thing that you will need. I found it very user friendly.
In terms of the specs, the automatic document feeder holds 35 sheets of paper. It manual duplexing so you have to manually scan both sides of documents. The paper tray holds 225 sheets, and the output holds 60 sheets. I was impressed with the print speed as well. It really holds up to the advertised 20 ppm for mono and 10 ppm for color.
The quality of the prints are very impressive. The text is crisp and readable (very important!) at all font sizes. There is some banding with backgrounds but not too bad. The pictures that you print will never go into an album but for business purposes, they are enough.
So HP+. Basically, it gives you an extra year of warranty (2 years total), 6 months free of Instant Ink, and recycles your ink cartridges. If you select HP+, you also have to buy original HP ink cartridges for the rest of the life of the printer even if you cancel Instant Ink. Essentially, in my opinion, the HP+ locks you down into their Instant Ink program for the duration of the printer's life. Don't get me wrong, for some offices, this is not an awful deal. In my opinion, if you print mainly in color and get close to the page limits each month, then these plans can be valuable. However, if you print mainly black, then this can be expensive. Non HP ink cartridges can be much cheaper than HP, but if you choose HP+, then you will forever be committed to HP ink.
All in all, the Officejet 8025e is a good entry-level all-in-one. It's decently fast and prints well. Whether or not HP+ is right for you depends on your needs. For home use or offices that mainly print black text, it may not be in your best interests. For those that need alot of color printing, then HP+ might be for you.
Pros:
Decently fast with 20 ppm black and 10 ppm color
Good print quality
HP+ adds one more year to warranty for 2 total years, and free recycling
HP Instant Ink may be worth it if you print alot of color pages (<6.7 cents a page)
Cons:
Manual duplex scanning
HP+ locks you into HP ink cartridges for the rest of the life of the printer
HP Instant not worth it for mainly text

Worth it for the office? Depends
on May 5, 2021

This printer is truly meant for the office that needs a fair amount of black and white documents. The HP LaserJet M234dwe is a great value all-in-one MONOCHROME printer for the office. I must emphasize monochrome because it is for the office (or for the rare home) that only needs black and white documents. It does come with some caveats.
Unboxing the HP LaserJet was typical HP, nothing special. Inside the box is the printer, toner cartridge, power cord, and the always required papers/manuals/guides. The size and weight of the printer are pretty average. There is a tiny 1.27” display that display minimal information.
Setup was unfortunately not as straightforward as I would have liked it to be. You have to install the HP Smart software from their website as well as make an account to use it. You also have to setup the printer with each device that you are going to print with, whether that is your phone, tablet, laptop, desktop, etc. HP is obviously investing heavily into the online connectivity/wireless capabilities. However, this can be very annoying to someone who just wants a quick print. However, for office computers that are always going to be there, this isn’t a huge drawback. Interestingly enough, they clearly discourage wired usage as no USB cord is included. There is a USB port but you still need internet and the aforementioned HP software and account to print. So this is a printer that purely depends on internet. Once again, this may be fine for businesses with constant internet access but not for the casual local printer.
In terms of the specs, there is no automatic document feeder for the scanner. This may be inconvenient for the office that needs to scan/send and copy multiple documents. The paper tray holds 150 sheets, and the output holds 100 sheets. I was impressed with the print speed. The advertised 30 ppm is indeed true. This is faster than most other printers in this class for sure. For more complex documents needing gradient backgrounds, it is definitely much slower. I would say its closer to 10-12 ppm. This is not as impressive. The quality of the prints are nothing to laugh at. The text is crisp and readable at all font sizes. There is minor banding with the gradient backgrounds but it is definitely more than passable.
So I am not as big a fan of subscription programs like HP+. It gives you an extra year of warranty for 2 years total and 6 months of free toner. You are also locked into buying HP toner for the rest of the life of the printer as the printer will not work with generics. Essentially, this locks you into their ecosystem. In addition, this printer does not give you the option of opting out of HP+. For SOME, HP+ absolutely can be affordable if you print close to the monthly limits. Otherwise, it can be not as worth it.
All in all, this is a good monochrome office printer for some. It's pretty fast for basic text and prints are good quality. It does come with the wireless requirements and HP+ but these may not be drawbacks for everyone.
Pros:
Very fast for its class with 30 ppm
Good print quality
Wireless capabilities
HP+ adds one more year to warranty for 2 total years, and free recycling
HP+ may be worth it if you print basically close to the page limits each month
Cons:
Requires internet and HP account to function
Virtually no wired capabilities – no local printer use
Initial setup can be annoying and has to be done with every device
Slower at complex prints at around 10-12 ppm
No automatic document feeder for scanner/copier
HP+ locks you into HP toner for the rest of printer’s life

For those who really want it
on May 3, 2021

I like these "smart" glasses. First, these are not augmented reality glasses. I know the "smart" title can be a little misleading. These are basically speakers in the glasses firing into the ear. Now, I don't mean to trivialize these devices. They are still engineering feats. I know that other companies have put out similar devices, so they are not the first of its kind to come out. However, I was excited to try out what these Anzu Smart Glasses from a extremely reputable gaming company had to offer.
I feel like the unboxing experience is just as much what you pay for as the device itself these days. I was not disappointed. I was pleased with the unboxing experience. The glasses were packaged very nicely, and they come with a premium looking case. Right out of the box, the smart glasses have the blue-light filtering lens on. If you desire, you can switch them out with the sunglasses lens that are also included. My understanding is that that for those who need prescription lens, you can get them (pay for them) separately through Lensabl. I elected to just keep the blue-light lens on. The build quality feels solid. These definitely don’t feel cheap. While the temples are pretty bulky, the fact that they are not regular glasses is not immediately obvious! That being said, you’re not going to be getting any compliments on your fashion any time soon. There are different lens size and shape options, so do your research before buying it!
The setup experience was very easy. I first charged them with the included charger. The charger is inside the carrying case for those who had trouble finding them like me! The included y-shaped USB cable connects magnetically via pin connectors to each temple side. It really is like wireless ear buds where each bud has to be charged. They take about 1.5 hours to fully charge. Mine came basically fully charged out of the box, but your mileage may vary. You also cannot use them while charging. After that, pairing via Bluetooth was quick and easy.
The audio experience is…fair. You are not going to get the rich and deep sounds that you would get from actual headphones, and these are not targeted towards the audiophile crowd. These are for everyday casual use. Songs are clear enough. Voices sound good. The advantage of these smart glasses are that they do not block your ears off. You are still able to hear your surroundings. That being said, the speaker form factor does mean that there is some sound bleed. If you share your office space with other people, I would be careful when listening to music so that it does not bother other people.
In terms of its features, it is IPX4 water resistant, so it can handle sweat and rain. A workout should be fine. I loved going out on bike rides with these. Unfortunately, you cannot mess with the EQ settings, which is hopefully a software fix later. There is a “gaming mode” for 60ms latency sound. These actually don’t impact battery life too much. You just have to be close to your device. Touch controls were fairly responsive although I really have trouble with all touch control devices. You can customize them in the app. In terms of the lens, the blue-light lens were fair. Colors do seem mildly warmer. I think all of these blue-light lens/filters tend to be more of a marketing thing than help with actual eye strain.
The battery life is where the Razer Anzu shines in comparison to its peers. They claim 5.5 hours of continuous use which I actually got close to. The battery use is minimal when not actively used so that was a huge plus. I had no trouble getting through a full day of use.
All in all, these are for a very few subset of people in my opinion. Headphones and glasses are both superior in their individual functions. However, if you are part of that group of people that needs this fusion device, then by all means go for it.
Pros:
Wireless Audio
Quick setup via Bluetooth
Different size/shapes available
Prescription lens available
Blue-light lens and sunglasses lens both included
Comfortable
5.5 hour battery life is higher than competition
Cons:
Sound quality is just ok
Sound leak
Bulky temples

Clean Lines
on April 22, 2021
Posted by: sollyp
from Atlanta, GA
I like these trimmers. A lot of people have raved about these so I really had to try these out. I have really sensitive skin. Everytime I shave and/or use a razor, I have really bad razor burns. These definitely fixed that problem.
These trimmers look GOOD. Like I really looked forward to the unboxing of these. They look good. And they feel good in the hand. The contours and grip really do work. The build quality is clearly as excellent as it looks. It has got some heft to it and it gives you some confidence that it will not fall apart. I was excited to quickly charge it up and get started. The included charger is more than long enough. If you run out of battery and need to use it wired, then it is not a problem. When it charges, the LED light at the base turns on. They really did not pull any punches when it comes to the aesthetics of this trimmer.
You can adjust the blade to your preference. I wanted to try it right out of the box. I will warn you. The blades are really sharp. The blades did not cut me, but I still had razor burn afterwards. Learned my lesson and from then on, I adjusted the blade to not be as close. I still get a clean cut with crisp lines but don’t burn my skin even if I push the trimmer. After use, it is recommended to clean it and keep it oiled. I really think these will last for for a long time.
All in all, this is my go-to device for grooming. I had my barber friend try it out and he loved it, so it definitely works in the home and professional setting. If I had to nitpick, it is a bit expensive. There are cheaper (but corded) alternatives that can achieve similar effects. However, to be fair, a lot of high quality grooming tools are at this price range or even higher. If you need a go-to high-quality grooming tool, then you really can’t go wrong with the Bevel Trimmer.

Toothbrush in between manual and electric
on March 10, 2021
Posted by: sollyp
from Atlanta, GA
I recently had to get a teeth removed which was not a good sign for me at this age. It meant that my brushing obviously was not doing the job. I was excited to try out the Philips One. I think this is the hybrid of toothbrushes.
In the box, it comes with the toothbrush itself, a carry case, and a USB-A to USB-C cable. Not that I think aesthetics of a toothbrush matter, but the Philips One really does look nice. It's also slim and light so it is easy to pick up and use. There are contours on the handle so it is very easy to grip. The toothbrush lays flat on your bathroom counter. The bottom is rounded so it can't stand up. It does have protrusions on the backside that prevent it from rolling around.
It did come with a charge out of the box, but I wanted to make sure that it was fully charged. I just popped open the cap at the bottom of the toothbrush and connected the charger.
Getting started is very easy. You just press the button. There is only one "power" level so no need to press multiple times. You'll know that the toothbrush is on with the humming and vibration. The timer is set for 2 minutes automatically and turns off at the end. There are also brief pauses every 30 seconds. This is essentially letting you divide your teeth into 4 quadrants (top left, top right, bottom left, and bottom right) and to clean all 4 quadrants evenly. I really love this feature and it helps pace people. Don't brush for too long or for too little. Having used both manual and fully electric toothbrushes, the Philips One is truly a hybrid in the middle. It is a definite improvement over a manual. However, the cleaning is definitely not as powerful as an electric. You will still need to manually brush to an extent to get that clean feeling. That being said, my teeth did feel clean.
Philips says the battery is good for 60 brushing sessions or 30 days (two brushings a day). There is a battery indicator that shows the approximate remaining power left. Solid white means you got a lot of charge. Then, it transitions to a fading white light. When it gets to flashing amber and you hear beeping, you should recharge the battery. According to Philips, a recharge can take up to 8 hours so I would plan in advance.
All in all, this is for those who want that in-between electric and manual toothbrushes. The replacement heads can be much cheaper than those for electric toothbrushes.
Pros:
Sleek, slim, light
Portable
Carry case included
Rechargeable battery that lasts a month
Contoured handle makes it easy to grip
USB-C so if you lose the cable, no biggie
Built-in timer and 30-second pauses to remind you to move on
Replacement heads can be cheaper than most electric brushes
Cons:
Cleaning power is weaker than an electric

Great high-end air purifier
on March 2, 2021
Posted by: sollyp
from Atlanta, GA
The Blueair Classic 605 is a highly regarded air purifier for good reason. This thing works.
Right out of the box, this thing was an absolute unit. Just reading the numbers 26"X19.7"X13.4" does not do it justice. Weighing in at 31 lbs, it is a solid and sturdy device. The build quality is excellent with a full steel body. It is also aesthetically pleasing. It reeks of quality. Despite being so heavy, moving it around is easy with the built-in casters (wheels). I am very impressed with the engineering of this device.
It is designed to take in air from 3 sides: the two sides and from the top. There are three filters which are identical (one on each side) for this purpose. These are HEPA filter with high efficiency. Getting into numbers, they can capture 0.1 micron air pollutants. This gives alot of credibility into their capturing "99.97% of airborne pollutants." They recommend filter replacements every 6 months. Your mileage may vary based on how much, how often, how hard you use the purifier.
This purifier covers alot of space at 775 square feet. For the average person in an average home, this is PLENTY for any room in the house. Air Changes per Hour (ACH) and Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) are important numbers when considering purifiers. Without getting into the nitty gritty, the Blueair Classic 605 has massive numbers and can easily handle large rooms.
This device has 3 speed settings. At the lowest speed, it is virtually silent. The medium speed produces a fan-level noise. It is nowhere near loud and is pleasant white sound. The highest fan noise is quite loud and not something I would want running when I am working or trying to sleep.
Setup with the app was quite easy. People seem to have a lot of problems with it. I personally did not have much trouble. It basically turns your phone into a remote to control fan speed. It also gives updates real time on outdoor air quality if that is something that you want. I personally did not see much of a need for the app. The only thing that can be done in the app and not manually is turning the LED light off. My only qualm about the app is that I see no need in connecting to Wifi or requiring location data. I am skeptical since tech companies make so much money scalping and selling personal data. I think just being able to connect via bluetooth and controlling it that way was possible. It is not a smart filter that detects air quality in the home either. You need a separate air quality monitor for that so I think the app is overkill if you are just running the purifier.
All in all, this thing is an absolute beast. I have asthma and allergies. My flare-ups have decreased immensely with the purifier running. I am actually looking forward to pollen season because I am curious see how it holds up (and how bad my allergies get). I recommend this to anyone who needs a high-end air purifier. When it goes on sale, it is an absolute bargain.
Pros:
Absolute unit
Stellar build quality and engineering
Beautiful design
Built-in casters (wheels) make it very portable
Great coverage means you can use in any room in the house
HEPA filters capture all but ultrafine particulates
Quiet fan noise at lowest and medium speed
Remote control with app
Cons:
Not really much but app is slightly overkill
Things to consider:
High cost but goes on sale
Replacing filters can be annoying cost of maintenance (for all air purifiers)

Good value tax return software!

I have used both Turbo Tax and H&R Block. I like both softwares and each has their own differences. The H&R Block software is very highly regarded and reviewed. Here are my thoughts on it!
This Deluxe package focuses on W-2 income, interest/dividend income, and form 1040. All in all, I think this will help the vast majority of people. This software is nice that it asks basically all of the questions that you would get asked at a CPA's office. You answer the questions, and the software does the work for you. What I really enjoyed was the tracking of your tax/refund in real time. If you have a question or do not know what things mean, there are links that provide great explanations/descriptions without all of the technical jargon. The questions help determine what deductions you qualify for and what you do not. At the end, the software reviews the information you provided and checks to see if there are any problems. When you move on to the state taxes, it transfers everything over and you just have to answer state specific taxes.
While you do get 5 free federal e-files, you only get 1 state and you have to pay to e-file it. If your state offers free state tax filing (mine does not), then you could just use the state program, print it out, or transfer the information over.
The only reason I took off a star is that my wife qualifies for a specific deduction that she gets when she uses another tax software, but for some reason, H&R is not able to get that deduction so the amount we owe is slightly higher.
All in all, great software for the vast majority of people. There are sales going on all the time so this is a great alternative and value to paying a CPA.

No more all-in-one printers to scan please!

The Epson WorkForce ES-400 II is awesome. I know a lot of people can get by with all in one printers, but a dedicated scanner can really change your life. Trying to scan more than even one page can be annoying. Turning documents into digital PDFs instantly without having to scan each page individually is great.
The scanner is fairly light and compact. You will have no problem finding some space in your office. Setup was relatively simple. You connect via USB. You download the software. Epson SmartScan is really user friendly in my opinion and I had no trouble using it. You can choose single vs. duplex, orientation, order, quality, and destination (desktop, email, cloud, etc.). You can adjust the images as necessary.
Its performance is crazy. It can scan both sides at once which is how it can do duplex. No need to scan the other side by flipping the page. It truly lives up to the 35 ppm one-sided or 70 ipm duplex speed as advertised. Another important statistic for scanners is how fast it turns the scanned image into a PDF on your computer. This scanner took about 10 seconds to do so. While mileage may vary, this was extraordinarily fast in my opinion. I am sure many can relate to the pain of using all-in-one printers to scan and then waiting forever for the image to result. My only gripe is the document feeder which sometimes missed the mark, However, everything else made this scanner well worth it.
All in all, I love this scanner. This WorkForce ES-400 II is the second iteration of an already highly regarded scanner. For anyone who wants to save time and scan multiple documents quickly, this is a no brainer for the office or home.

Great professional projector!

The Epson Pro EX9240 is targeted towards business use. Its features are well tailored for this. I think a good office/classroom projector is extremely underrated. The Epson Pro EX9240 completely redefined my expectations.
The unboxing experience was a classic Epson experience. However, I was happy to find a carrying case included with the projector! This makes it great for your portable business needs. Like most Epson projectors, it comes with a remote control, batteries, and power cord. I really liked the black colorway. The build quality feels sturdy as with other Epson projectors. It is relatively light at 7.7 lbs, making it very portable.
Setting up was simple enough. It is plug and play. I connected my computer via the HDMI port and we were ready to go. You really cannot underestimate the importance of a 1080P projector. I have other business purpose projectors but the resolutions range from VGA (640x480) to D1 (720x480). This blew those out of the water. As soon as I turned it on, I was impressed with the brightness and clarity of the pictures. Images were bright and sharp. Powerpoints looked great. I could read all the text very clearly. No blurry images. I am sure all students can relate to classroom projectors that just don’t cut it. With this, I can project this in a brightly lit room with sunlight coming in, and I can still comfortably read all text. The 4000 lumens are no joke.
Videos are watchable. However, with the low contrast ratio, it certainly is not ideal. The included speaker can fill a small room but the audio quality is not its strength. You can easily connect a speaker via the ports or use a bluetooth speaker connected to your main device.
All in all, this is a great projector for professionals. I think it is very reasonably priced for a 1080p projector. It is very light and portable. 1080p resolution means crisp text. 4000 lumens mean I can read presentations in broad daylight with no problem.
