A good ecofriendly laptop!
on October 24, 2023
Posted by: sollyp
Right off the bat, I love what the Acer Aspire Vero is trying to do. Acer is incorporating greener practices and recycled materials into this line.
Starting from the packaging, the box is made from recyclable packaging and is also recyclable. There is cardboard packaging in lieu of plastic packaging such as around the charging brick. The plastic bag is made from recycled materials. I feel like these practices could be extended to all mainstream products and not just the green Vero line.
The laptop itself is made from recycled plastics. I believe the quoted number is 40% PCR (post-consumer recycled plastic). The only thing that gives it away is if you look closely, it appears to have bits and pieces almost embedded into the plastic. It does not take away from the aesthetic at all, and, if anything, I actually really like how it looks. Regardless of whether or not the look appeals to you, it would not mean anything if the material is crap. Happily, I have to say that the build quality feels decent. The chassis feels nice and sturdy.
It's got good port selection as you can see. Jumping straight into the user experience, the screen is unfortunately not great. The brightness is about 300 nits and it shows. It is perfectly fine in indoor use but any sort of sunlight and I was struggling. The color accuracy was fine. The battery life is great. I was easily getting 10-15 hours with light streaming and browsing. The keyboard isn't bad and feels fairly responsive for a mid-tier laptop. The trackpad was actually great and felt good to use.
All in all, the Acer Aspire Vero is a good laptop for those looking in the mid-tier department while also trying to maintain a greener standard.

Great relatively affordable gaming monitor
on October 3, 2023

Honestly, with high end gaming monitors costing more than a couple thousand dollars, I just wanted a relatively more affordable one that made more sense for the average gamer. I really think that this ASUS TUF 27 LED monitor will fit the bill for the vast majority of people.
Packaging wise, I was pleasantly surprised at the box design. It definitely came off a bit fancier than I expected. It wasn't the generic cardboard but blacked out with the ASUS TUF marking on it. Inside the box, I was also pleasantly surprised by how many cables are in there. It came with a DisplayPort, HDMI, and USB cable included on top of the power cable. I feel the budget monitors can be minimal with what they include so this was a nice touch.
Setup was easy. In terms of real-life usage, I have to say that the features of this monitor are quite excellent. I think the curve can be hit or miss but its not too aggressive at 1500R and I think is done quite tastefully. The speakers are not going to blow you away but they get good volume. You can rotate the monitor too. The response time was great and the 240 Hz refresh rate is legendary. The image quality was about as good as you can get on an IPS panel.
All in all, a great monitor for the average gamer!

Charge your electric vehicle (EV) on the go with this portable level 2 charger. Compatible with all plug-in EVs in the United States, except for Tesla, which requires a SAE J1772 adapter. It's compact size and 17-foot charging cable allows for flexible installation and usability. All you need is a 220 Volt or 240 Volt NEMA14-50 outlet to plug the charger into.

Works well, but I wish there were adapters

The Rexing J1772 Level 2 Nema 15-50 EVSE works well. I had no issues with it connecting or charging. The build quality seems decent and it feels similar to my OEM EVSE. The charging speeds were consistent and I experienced no issues on that end. I did not experience any serious drop off in speeds at different states of charge. The cable did not get excessively hot even hours after charging. It comes with a carrying case which is great as nobody likes things clunking around in the back of your car. The LCD screen is a nice touch and does add a touch of quality to it.
The only issue that I have with this is that it does not use adapters. If you only have a level 1 NEMA 5-15 plug, then you need to buy a whole separate separate charger which honestly is not cost-effective or environmentally friendly. Conversely, if you have a NEMA 5-15 level 1 EVSE and want to have a NEMA 15-50 EVSE just for the rare occasions you go camping or have access, it's not a simple adapter.
All in all, it works great. I think Rexing could easily make the plugs adaptable.

What you didn't know you needed
on September 18, 2023

I mean who doesn't need an extension cable? You can never go wrong with having one. Sure you could probably get by without one but it sure makes life easier. An example being if you only have one charger in your garage. Sure, if the EV is parked right next to it, there might be no issues, but if you are one car away, the cable might not reach. Then you always have to re-park your cars. With the J1772 extension from Rexing, you don't have to worry about that. Another issue that I have noticed with EV charging is when cars (ICE or otherwise) who are not charging are parked in the EV charging spot. Then this cable can help reach your car. I have not noticed any drop in charging speeds when I use the extension cable. This cable can reportedly support up to 40 A charging. I did not try to experiment with currents higher than 32 A. It would have been nice if it did support higher currents but I guess it would cost more. I do wish there was a locking mechanism so people couldn't steal it or unplug you maliciously (which alot of people do surprisingly!).
All in all, I love this extension cable and it makes life alot easier.

An extra one for the road
on August 25, 2023

Now everyone who has a Tesla knows that they can't live without a J1772 to Tesla adapter. Unlike DC fast charging where the Tesla Supercharger network beats all of the CCS providers, J1772 chargers are alot more ubiquitous compared to Tesla destination chargers. The OEM adapters come standard with any Tesla. However, all it takes is one drop, one mistake, a misplaced pebble//rock and it becomes unusable. Whether it is a bent pin or some components shaken loose. If you need a replacement, the Rexing adapter is a fine replacement. It feels as sturdy and clean as the OEM one that Tesla provides. The build quality definitely seems to be on par. I have not noticed any deficiencies in charging. It works fine and the speeds seem to be on par with what I was getting previously. If there is any noticeable difference between the Rexing adapter and the OEM, it is that it does seem to a be tighter fit. We will see if daily usage loosens this up.
All in all, the Rexing J1772 to Tesla adapter is a fine replacement if you need one.

The Razer Kraken Kitty V2 Pro is just a cute and playful product. However, don’t let the looks deceive you. It is a bonafide Razer gaming product and lives up to the name.
Out of the box, it’s got that classic Razer look about it. Build quality certainly seems solid. The “Kitty” part of the headset refers to the ears. These ears have RGB lighting which you can customize to have fun with. If you want to ditch the ears, you certainly can although it kind of defeats the purpose of getting these Kitty headsets. The memory foam is comfortable and big enough that it completely covers my ears. It was pleasant enough that I could wear it for hours. My ears did get a little hot but honestly my ears get that way with all headphones. The sound quality is good. It’s punch and is very balanced. I will say that it performs well with gaming. With FPS, it’s precise enough that you can discern sounds but not the exact source. Razer microphones are always really impressive to me. These were no different. Truly will serve you well with streaming or recording.
All in all, Razer is a mainstay in the business for a reason and the Razer Kraken Kitty V2 Pro is a fun one.

Good value for what you are getting
on August 21, 2023
Posted by: sollyp
I have had a chance to work with several different security camera systems. However, they have typically all been from one brand. I was excited to get to try out the Night Owl 8 camera system. They are not a new company by any means.
In the box, you have everything you need with the cameras themselves, the DVR, and cables. The cables are very long, about 60 feet so you should be good on that end. Installation was simple enough. It was replacing an older existing system so I did not really require much prep-work. Right off the bat, I was happy with the video quality. I have learned that the resolution does not equate to high video quality. The previous system was also 2K but the Night Owl system just seemed more "crisp." Details were clear. The audio was decent. It was not as impressive as the video quality but that is not the primary purpose of these. The two-way audio is always a nice touch. It works well. I personally have found that I never use it, but it works.
The DVR system has a 1 TB hard drive which is awesome. I don't have to worry about subscription services or any nonsense like that. The interface is fairly straightforward.
All in all, I have been very happy with the Night Owl 12 Channel 8 Camera 2K system.

Works great and as intended
on August 21, 2023

Virtually everyone will agree that the Tesla Supercharger is unmatched in its reliability and ubiquity. It also tends to be much more reasonably priced than the CCS network. However, there does come some occasions where you need to charge CCS. The Tesla stations may be down or crowded. The CCS charger may be closer than a Supercharger. For example, the CCS network is just closer to me than the nearest Supercharger. Regardless of your situation, I do think that this is a much needed adapter for Tesla owners. My reasoning is that there definitely will be an occasion where you need to use the CCS network. You don't want to be out of luck when that happens.
Enter the Rexing CCS to Tesla adapter. This thing works great. It fits snug into the Tesla port. I had no issues with inserting the CCS. It worked great when I tried it on the EA network. Build quality seems solid and on par with the OEM one sold by Tesla. The OEM one is a bit cheaper so that does bring into question what Rexing is trying to do with this one. All in all, works great and I think all Tesla owners should have some sort of CCS to Tesla adapter.

Can't believe how cheap storage is now
on July 30, 2023
Posted by: sollyp
I really can't believe how far SSD technology has come. A 128GB SSD used to cost what this 1TB SSD costs. My first SSD was a Crucial drive. Crucial was a solid choice for SSDs back then and still is, no pun intended. The Crucial P5 Plus is a relatively affordable way to expand the storage for your desktop PC or PS5. The included heatsink is generous and nice added touch. It should definitely keep the SSD relatively cool while your system is under load.
Installation is simple enough and really basically just plug and play. The longest part was taking apart my PS5. After you install the SSD, you turn on the PS5 and just follow the instructions to setup. Speeds are blazing fast. You can read up on the read and write speeds (up to 6600 Mbps read and 5000 Mbps write). These numbers place it solidly in the upper echelon. I would say these are great bang for the buck and if you can get these on sale, then they are definitely a steal.
All in all, if you need to expand your storage, then you cannot go wrong with the Crucial P5 Plus.

Asus with a good one
on July 30, 2023
Posted by: sollyp
I love chromebooks and I think Asus did a great job with this one. They are using AMD's Ryzen 3 7320C which is part of the lineup of AMD processors that were designed specifically for chromebooks. This 14 inch chromebook should fit the needs of 95% of people in my opinion.
Out of the box, it feels familiar to most other chromebooks in its class but also has some design language that are similar to other Asus products. It feels solidly built although only time will tell. In my experience, chromebooks do tend to have some more mechanical issues (hinge, screen, etc.) than I would like, even the ones at more expensive price points. It feels sleek. The bezels are a bit thicker than I would like in the day and age. Overall, the design is simple and nice.
Performance is excellent. The AMD Ryzen 3 7320C is an excellent processor. There is no lag with normal tasks of web browsing, streaming, documenting. It can handle light gaming as well but I did not test any. The display is FHD. If you are used to higher resolutions, it will be a noticeable dip but otherwise a perfectly good screen. The brightness I believe is around 300 nits which is average. It is enough for indoor use with minimal to moderate amount of sunlight. The keyboard feels nice and tactile. It is not too mushy. The webcam is actually 1080p and not 720p like 95% of the competition. The speakers are bottom firing which I still do not understand why companies do this, but it is decent. It does not get as loud as I would like but otherwise is clear.
All in all, a solid chromebook from Asus.
