Handy USB-C / USB-A card reader
on September 17, 2023
Posted by: BIGASN
Handy little USB-C and USB-A 3.2 card reader. It reads both SD and micro SD cards with male USB-C and USB-A connectors on both ends. It’s rated to transfer data at up to 95 MB a second. I didn’t do any official speed tests, but my SanDisk micro SD card was recognized quickly on both my Android phone and Windows PC. Transfer rates seemed quick when copying a bunch of images and video files. It’s a bit limited in terms of types of cards it can read, but SD and micro SD are the most common, as are the USB-A and USB-C connectors. It makes swapping files between my phone and PC a legitimately easy affair. I also love that it’s about the size of a stick of gum, so it’s easy to carry around and be with me when I need it most. The only drawback I’ve found is that the USB-C connector is a little short and won’t fit into my phone without taking off the phone case. Not a big deal, but something to keep in mind if you plan on connecting it to your phone frequently. Overall though, this is a solid little SD/micro SD card reader and is small enough to always carry on you. Good job Insignia!

Sound quality with rugged practicality. Stays put.
on September 17, 2023
Posted by: BIGASN
The Jabra Elite 8 Active is where sound quality meets rugged practicality. Not only are these some of the best sounding earbuds on the market, but Jabra has made a point to make these self proclaimed “world’s toughest earbuds” stand up to the abusive conditions like drops, salt water, extreme dust, and they can supposedly even withstand being under 5 feet of water! I didn’t try testing that rating out, but it’s nice knowing that I can take them to the beach and not worry about sand or saltwater ruining them. Speaking of saltwater protection, this also means that they’re made to withstand getting soaked in sweat, so they can hold up to your heavy workout sessions. They also feature Jabra’s ShakeGrip rubberized coating that somehow reliably keeps the earbuds in place. I used to think it was all about having tight fitting earbud cushions, but these comfortably stay put without hurting my ear canal. And without any kind of “wings” the earbud bodies are able to maintain a low profile so they don’t look ridiculous in your ears. I often wear 1 earbud while I’m at work and most people don’t even know I have it in unless they’re paying attention. In terms of stability and fit, I haven’t tried playing sports with them on, but they stay in place whether I’m running around at work, going on a walk, jogging, or doing construction. It’s worth going through the 5 different ear cushion sizes (included) to find what’s the best fit for your ears. Because they’re earbuds, the cushions need to form a good ear seal if you want good bass response. And these babies produce..
The bass is strong, the vocals are natural, and the highs are smooth. Jabra has been making great sounding headsets for a while and these do not disappoint. They handle all genres of music well and the mics have a clear voice pick up which also makes them great for Zoom and Teams meetings. I was excited to see that the Elite 8 Active features Dolby spatial audio, but that was honestly the biggest (and only) disappointment I had in them. Turning on spatial audio adds reverb for a sense of “space”, but it just sounds like echoes to me. Maybe it works better watching a movie or videos, but I did not like it at all for music. Hopefully they make this better in a future software update, but for now it can at least be easily turned off.
Speaking of tuning things out, the Elite 8 Active features a new “smarter” ANC system that is supposedly 1.6x quieter than their previous models. I can neither confirm nor deny such claims, however I did notice that there’s some kind of automatic wind noise filtering. Jabra’s “hear through” is top notch and really shines vs other brands. It picks up a lot of the surrounding sounds you want to hear and I sometimes forget I even have the earbuds on if I’m not playing anything. To tune everything, you’ll need to download the free Jabra app, but thankfully it has useful features and is easy to use. Through the app you can adjust your ANC and pass through sound levels, customize the controls, tune a 5 band EQ, and even look up their last known GPS location in case they go missing.
If you’re in the market for earbuds that are practical, reliable, last long, sound great, and can withstand abuse, I highly recommend the Jabra Elite 8 Active.

An audiophile streaming receiver with CD
on September 11, 2023
Posted by: BIGASN
At first, I thought the Technics SA-C600 was just a high end cd player, but to my delight, I was way wrong. If anything, it feels more like an audiophile streaming receiver with a CD player. Not only can it spin discs exceptionally well, it’s capable of streaming audio over Bluetooth and WiFi which allows you to enjoy services such as Chromecast streaming, Spotify, Amazon Music, and podcasts. There’s also a surprising array of inputs from optical, RCA line-in, FM, and even a high end isolated phono input that’s specially designed to reduce noise. There’s no surround sound or overly complex gimmicks at work here, just high end HiFi with quality components and a focus on recreating good music. It might seem sparse, but the built-in 60w x 2 amp sounded wonderful mated to a pair of Def. Tech BP8 tower speakers. It’s been a long time since I’ve had them in a pure stereo setup, but the SA-C600 made them sing and thump in ways I forgot they were capable of. Vocals and highs were smooth and lifelike with a certain depth and detail for bass and strings. You can feel the energy emanate from Stevie Nicks in “Edge of Seventeen” and there’s no sense of shrillness when Ariana Grande hits her highs. From Prince to Curren$y, to Outkast, to Bob Marley, Rage Against the Machine, Eric Clapton, and even some Garth Brooks, it didn’t matter what kind of music I put on, the SA-C600 shined playing them all.
And honestly, I kind of thought it was silly to make such an expensive CD player nowadays, but going through my old cd catalog was a ridiculously good time. Especially when it came to playing my old mixed CDs, which felt like eating through a box of gourmet chocolates. I forgot what songs I put on most of them, so each mix was a surprise. There were moment of both pride and embarrassment for younger me, but at least all the songs sounded great through the SA-C600. It was also impressive how quickly the CD player was ready to play burned CDRs. I remember a lot of players being picky about even the brand of disc used, but it didn’t matter what old disc I threw at it, it loaded up and played quickly.
Unfortunately, I found out my old record player no longer works, so I didn’t get to test the phono input, but I’m excited to try it out soon. Apparently, it has a special noise free amp for the phono input, plus it’s Technics, so I’m sure they gave it some extra attention. Using the SA-C600 is fairly straightforward with inputs to cycle through and a few direct source buttons on the remote. The unit is relatively compact and roughly the size of a medium extra thick deep dish pizza box. It should easily fit on most tables and counters, plus the simple and elegant steel and black colorway should blend in well with most decors. There’s nothing I’d say it does poorly, but I do wish there was more control over the subwoofer LFE output (there’s none) and I would like to see native support for Apple music. But that’s just nitpicking, because I can still stream any music service over bluetooth or Chromecast, and LFE controls are generally available on the sub amp anyway.
If you love music and the SA-C600 is in your budget, I highly recommend it. Think of it as an audiophile streaming receiver with a high end CD player (that will read anything). It’s been a wonderful addition to my home and brought a new energy to the living room and kitchen. Highly recommended!
PROS
- Wonderfully detailed music

- Read all of my burned CD-Rs (and quickly)
- Digital “remaster” option
- Looks simple and high end
- Relatively compact
- Phono input
- Can use WiFi or ethernet port
- Natively streams Spotify, Amazon Music, podcasts, Chromecast, etc..
- Hidden 5 band EQ
- Buttons / user interface is responsive

Excellent WiFi security DVR cam system, no fees!!
on August 15, 2023
Posted by: BIGASN
Loving this new security system setup. I’ve been using one of the more popular subscription based cameras for a while (with great results), but adding more cameras is pricey and I really hate having to pay for another subscription service. This Night Owl system does just about everything it did, but with better WiFi range, sharper resolution, slightly better night vision, and the major detail: 1 TB of local storage. How long your storage lasts before being overwritten depends on how many cameras you’re using, but so far with 3 cameras mounted I’ve been able to go back through 5 days of footage. Navigating through events and the timeline is simple enough, though the app acts up a little when trying to review really old footage through the timeline. Scanning through events is much simpler and the app makes it easy to download a clip to your phone. Speaking of which, I was a little confused with the marketing literature about whether I could review the footage from a remote location on my phone or if I needed to be within bluetooth range. I’m happy to say, the answer is the former. You can be just about anywhere with data reception and remotely review events or live view the footage from every camera on your phone. I do wish I could review footage from a website, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I believe it’s for security reasons, because web browsers can be a big vulnerability point. Night Owl emphasizes that the footage is securely protected from hacking and so far I have no reason to doubt them.
Setting up the cameras and DVR base is pretty straight-forward and surprisingly a bit easy. I recommend synching all of the cameras to the base before installing them, because they need to be near each other during the initial setup. What’s awesome is how far the WiFi range works and that the cameras stay synched after unplugging and moving them. I have all 6 setup so far and was delighted to see that all I had to do was plug it back in and it automatically reconnected to the DVR without doing anything else. Unfortunately, while it’s a “wireless” camera system you still have a power wire for each camera to run. It’s easier than making really long cable runs to the DVR base, but finding an outlet to tap into can be challenging, especially if you mount them up high. I don’t know if Night Owl makes a rechargeable battery pack to plug into, but it’s not that hard to piece together if needed.
The daytime and night vision are both excellent. 2k resolution makes it easier to spot identifying features when zooming in, but the DVR base is compatible with the Night Owl 4k cameras if you want to upgrade. And while it comes with 6 cameras, it’s a 10 channel DVR base, so there’s room to add 4 more cameras as well. There’s a little bit of a delay in the live feed, but it’s on par with the other WiFi cameras I’ve used. Using the app, you can program notifications and activity zones for each camera and it’s smart enough to detect and alert you if it’s a person, car, or animal. It doesn’t have face ID recognition, but I’m fine with general person notifications. The motion activated spotlights are a cool feature and I like how you can program it to stay on or blink. The cams also record audio and have 2 way communication ability, which is especially handy when talking to a solicitor at the door. There’s also 3 pre-programmed audible alarms, but I really wish it would let me record my own.
Overall, I’m very happy with this Night Owl security system and am excited to finally have local storage and playback without paying a monthly fee. Outside of running a power wire, the cameras are fairly simple to set up and provide excellent video in both day and night time. It also comes at a solid price point for a wireless 6 camera system, which is less than $100 a camera and that’s not even factoring in the DVR. Highly recommended!
PROS

- Excellent night vision
- Easy to sync cameras to base
- Simple WiFi setup for base
- 1 TB hard drive local storage (no subscription needed)
- Easy to download video clips through app
- Motion activated spotlights

What a cordless vacuum should be. Great suction.
on July 9, 2023
Posted by: BIGASN
The Dyson v11 is a cool looking cordless vac with the power and battery life to clean a whole house. Granted, it’s going to vary largely on how big and dirty your house is, but with up to 60 minutes of run time in Eco mode I had just enough juice to do light cleaning throughout a 4 bedroom home. However, I honestly don’t know if I’ll ever use Eco mode outside of testing it for review, because Med and Boost mode is where this vacuum really shines. With a simple touch of a button, it’s easy to switch power levels and while the stronger ones dramatically shorten the battery life, it’s worth the extra suction. Med is the default power level and provides ample general suction that’s good for most situations, while the Boost power mode kicks it up a notch offering the strongest suction with an impressive amount of pull. It makes cleaning out the car with the brush and crevice tools much easier because I don’t have to try to loosen up the dust to help the vacuum suck it up. It’s actually strong enough to do the job and that’s what makes this Dyson v11 a winner. It has the power, battery life, and attachments to make cleaning easier and more thorough. And because it’s a Dyson, it also looks like a futuristic hand cannon, complete with a cool humming sound when you release the trigger (I won’t lie, when not cleaning the v11 is sometimes used as a toy).
Speaking of attachments, this v11 kit comes with a lot more than I anticipated. There’s a floor and a furniture rolling brush attachment that are both oriented for sucking up hair and fur without getting tangled up. The floor one does a great job on cat hair, but they’re short and not really the tangling type. I do wish it came with an LED light strip to illuminate the floor, but that’s not so critical for me. It also comes with a few fixed brush heads that I’m still figuring out. I think one is specifically for blinds, because I saw it on a photo and tried it and I’m happy to say it works great on aluminum mini blinds! There’s also a standard crevice tool with a fine tip and a hybrid brush/crevice tool that’s good for all-purpose duty. I love that it comes with a flexible hose and an angled in-line attachment that makes reaching those weird spots a bit easier. Cleaning out the bagless dust canister is also an simple process with one handle that both opens up and empties out the canister. I am a bit worried about the longevity of this handle since it’s doing double duty to pull and empty things, but we’ll see how it holds up. Thankfully, Dyson includes a 2 year warranty in case there’s any issues. They also provide lifetime support, though I have no idea what that actually entails.
Overall, the Dyson v11 is an outstanding cordless vacuum that’s a serviceable main vacuum and a fantastic 2nd vacuum. It’s powerful, well built, has ample battery life, comes with a ton of attachments, looks cool, and even makes cool sounds. If you’re looking for a cordless vac with respectable suction, look no further.
PROS
- Up to 60 min run time (in Eco mode)
- Legitimately powerful suction in Boost mode
- 3 power levels (Boost, Med, Eco)
- Comes with lots of useful attachments (2 focused on hair/fur removal)
- Easy to empty dust bin
- Easy to figure out how to use
- Bagless
- Excellent build quality
- Makes a cool sound when you let go of the trigger
- Looks and feels a futuristic canon
- 2 year warranty
CONS
- Relatively heavy for some
- Weight distribution centered on handle/trigger
- Wish it came with a bag for attachment storage
- Floor cleaner brush head attachment has no lights
- Charge time is about 3.5 hours

Well built, short battery, love the O2 sensor.

With the CZ Smart 45mm watch, Citizen offers a great looking smartwatch that falls short on its ambitious smart potential. Physically, the body is glass and steel with a style more reminiscent of traditional analog pieces. The band is black silicone, accented with stainless steel buckles that match the body. There’s a certain robustness in the physical feel of this watch that I adore. The fit and finish is top notch and what you would expect from a Citizen piece in this price range. I am a bit worried about how flush the glass face is to the dial. It looks good, but there’s no protective rim, lip, or anything. I don’t know how sturdy the dial and screen are, but I’lll be on the lookout for a glass screen protector for some peace of mind. Speaking of which, the screen offers an excellent full color picture with good touch responsiveness and a snappy user interface. I love that I can change faces right on the watch, without the app, but the lack of good looking digital watch faces is extremely disappointing. Being able to change faces is one of the best and most basic parts of having a smartwatch, but Citizen doesn’t offer many for some reason. In fact, so far there’s only 2 that I like, but of all things, this should be very easy for Citizen to rectify.
Outside of the heart rate monitor that’s essentially standard in smartwatches now, Citizen also includes a pulse oximeter (to read your oxygen saturation level) which really comes in handy if you’re traveling to high elevations (Colorado) or have sleep apnea. Like many people with OSA, I haven’t used my CPAP in a while, but I noticed a few early morning readings where my oxygen saturation dropped to 87% while I was sleeping. This could be something as simple as the watch taking a reading while it’s out of place, but it could very well be OSA. This isn’t a perfect watch, but it gets an A for helping me notice what could be a serious health issue. Which is precisely what I think the Citizen engineers wanted.
Featuring the CZ Smart YouQ app, this watch analyzes your biofeedback data against health models built by IBM’s Watson using NASA research info. I love the concept, because it tells you when you should be the most alert vs sleepy based on your actual biometric data. It’s an awesome idea, but so far I seemingly have not worn it long enough for it to give a proper reading. This might be because I mostly wear it at night to track my sleep, but this also brings me to the biggest fault of this watch. The battery life is….. limiting. Maybe it’s all of the sensors running, but even with turning the screen off for tilt/wake only, and changing the heart rate test to periodically, I still only get about 10-12 hours of battery life. For example, I’ll put it on around 8pm to get ready for bed and then by 5:30am it already needs to be recharged. It’s nice that it recharges quickly, but not being able to last a whole waking day is a big shortcoming. As is not being properly water resistant. Citizen mentions that it’s water resistant enough for rain or washing your hands, but that doesn’t sound very reassuring.
Overall, the Citizen CZ Smart 45mm is a good looking watch with a lot of potential and a few key flaws. I love the “Power Gauge” and biometric health info, but it needs better watch faces and much longer battery life. The pulse oximeter is a welcome feature and has already come in handy. Due to the battery life, I have a hard time recommending this as your main everyday carry watch, but a software update could help things out in a long way.

All the camera most people need. Amazing focus.

The Canon EOS R50 redefines how I think about an entry level DSLR type of camera in a very good way (yes it’s a mirrorless camera, but I’m referring to the body style). If you mainly shoot in Automatic or Program mode, this camera will be your best friend. In fact, if you do any type of vlogging, videos, or social media content creation, you will love the R50. It’s essentially designed to be a high end camera upgrade for your phone, and it very much works that way. Using the free Canon Camera Connect app for Android, I was able to quickly pair the camera to my phone and begin either transferring files or use it as a remote. Transferring files is surprisingly quick, even the larger 4K videos, but using my smartphone as a second screen and remote is where it gets really interesting. The phone live view is virtually lag free which makes it very handy as a 2nd monitor, and I love that I can touch focus through my phone too. Speaking of which, the focus system on the R50 is ridiculous.
100% viewfinder coverage divided into 651 cells with Ai auto focus and subject tracking. And it actually works! As soon as a person comes into frame, you’ll see a focus box around their eyes. Animals too. It’s almost scary how it knows, but that’s part of what makes this such a good camera. It’s designed to help just about anyone create great looking content. The built in JPG processing is excellent and includes a lot of optional filters and editable features built-in. As a “vlogging camera” one of my favorite features is the Close-Up Demo Mode, which is a boon for product demos. In this mode, the R50 will quickly autofocus between you, the object you hold up to the lens, and then quickly back to you when you take it away. It doesn’t get lost figuring out what to focus on and that’s huge. Especially when live streaming where you can keep the focus on auto without worrying about the camera randomly trying to refocus. The tracking does an exceptional job of keeping up with the subject and there’s even a mode specifically to auto detect cars. In a way, these aren’t really new features, but to have them with such wide focus coverage with smart auto-detection and rapid focus tracking that works well, it’s truly game changing.
Like most entry level cameras in this class, it only has a few dedicated buttons, but that’s ok. A lot of features are quickly accessible through the LCD touchscreen, so you don’t have to fumble through menus and submenus. And in that sense, if you’re an old school photographer that mainly does photos and prefers to shoot through the viewfinder, this camera probably isn’t for you. The body is almost too compact to comfortably hold like a DSLR and it almost feels like I’m holding a toy camera when I use the viewfinder, because of how small it feels. Granted, that’s really a subjective thing and if you have smaller hands the fit could be just what you’ve been waiting for. However, it feels like this camera was made to primarily shoot through the LCD screen and if you treat it like a smartphone, it all starts to make sense.
The R50 was made for content creators who need a quick upgrade to their production values. Wirelessly transferring photos and videos to my phone is so quick and easy, it practically feels like a wireless extension of my phone. I also need to mention that the video exports as the super friendly MP4 format (thank you Canon), so no need to convert a funky file format that barely anyone uses. It’s funny, despite being an “entry” level camera, I think this is all the camera that most people need. If you’re a vlogger or do a lot of solo video recording, you’ll love the Close-Up Demo mode, focus tracking, and easy wireless file transfers. If you’re just getting into photography, you’ll love the image quality and how friendly this camera is to use. And if you bought an expensive DSLR camera, but only shoot in Automatic or Program mode, the 651 focus zones and Ai features will make your stuff look even better. Great job Canon.

Attractive and quiet HEPA air purifier.

Good looking and quiet air purifier. It’s a lot bigger than the pictures make it seem, with an overall size that takes up the same amount of space as a small ottoman. I didn’t remove the filter cover, but it feels like the filter spans a full 360 around the body, so it pulls in air from all sides. The purified air then comes out vertically through the vented top, which you can feel as you stand over it. It doesn’t come with a remote, but you can monitor and control it through the Blueair phone app that’s free on Android and iOS. And I guess this is what sets it apart from other HEPA air filters, because not only can you get a live feed of the current air quality (down to 2.5 microns!), but also a readout of the current outside air quality, and of course you can use it as a remote. Unfortunately, you’ll have to look at higher end models if VOC detection or UV capabilities are a priority.
In terms of day to day use, air purifiers are kind of a set and forget thing. What I love about this one is that it has an Auto setting that automatically increases the fan speed depending on the quality of the air it’s pulling in. It mostly always stays at a low level that I can barely hear, but it ramps up quickly if someone has been smoking or vaping nearby. At the highest level, there’s clearly an audible whooshing sound with a little bit of intermittent whirring. However, it’s not so loud that I feel like I have to speak over it or blast the TV. Outside of the Auto and 3 speed settings, there’s a Night mode, which I’m honestly not sure what it does. I know it turns off the blue illumination light on the front of the purifier and dims the display, but I don’t know if it does anything in terms of limiting fan speed. What’s also pretty nifty about the Pure 311i series are the interchangeable prefilters. This is the cloth that wraps around the outside of the purifier. While I like the gray mine that came in, there’s currently 2 other colors available that I can swap over to and I can only imagine the third party designs that could be available in the future.
Overall, if you’re looking for an attractive medium room air purifier I highly recommend checking out the Blueair Pure 311i Max. It’s has a HEPA filter, looks good, works well, is generally whisper quiet, has a customizable cover, and an air quality live feed. Works great on smoke, vapor, and pet smells.

OLED HDR is a world of difference. Amazing screen.

This monitor isn’t perfect, but it’s absolutely fantastic. The picture is sharp, the screen is bright, the colors are brilliant, and the black levels are like ink. The extra wide format gives so much extra screen real estate that it’s honestly hard to go back to anything less than this or a dual screen. The real treat with the 21:9 aspect ratio is when games or movies use the entire screen. Blade Runner 2049 in ultra wide 4K HDR is an experience. And I’m beyond happy to report that Diablo IV fills the entire screen during gameplay, which really opens up a lot more of the map. The curve of the screen is gentle enough that it adds a little sense of immersion while up close, yet is barely noticeable from a distance. Playing Forza Horizon 5, it felt like the edges of the road reached towards my peripherals. Same with the background in Cyberpunk 2077. It makes a mild difference overall, but does add to the experience. What really makes this screen shine though, is the native 3440x1440 QD-OLED HDR1000 panel. I’ve had 4K screens before, but QD-OLED technology really opens up the joys (and headaches) of HDR.
OLED and HDR go together like peanut butter and jelly. Both technologies are focused on expanding the color and illumination details to create a more brilliant and lifelike image. A lot of people associate that with vibrant and colorful images (for good reason), but even more impressive is how it brings out the details in dark scenes. Black images are truly black, yet you can still see what you’re supposed to see (no more turning up the brightness so black is gray). This was huge for playing a visually dark game like Diablo IV where you might spend a lot of time in dark dungeons and caves. A good movie example of how the light localization of OLED panels and the increased range of HDR work well together is the hotel shootout at the end of John Wick 3. The flashlights were so bright against the dark black setting that they almost seemed blinding. It was wonderful! I have LED HDTV’s with HDR, but OLED takes it to another level. To have that as a 34” ultrawide 165Hz gaming monitor is like driving a Porsche on open roads to work everyday. It even includes the test sheet to show it was factory calibrated to a Delta E less than 2 (considered a professional), which explains why it looks great right out of the box.
But as grin-inducing as this monitor can be, there are a few moments of madness that I believe are more software than hardware related. For some reason, I cannot get Netflix to smoothly stream 4K HDR video through the DP1.4 connection, but it will through HDMI. I don’t know if it’s an issue with my graphics card (RTX 2080 Super), cables, or Netflix itself, but it just won’t play Netflix properly in 4K through the DisplayPort. I could just use HDMI to alleviate the 4K Netflix issue, but it limits the screen refresh to 100Hz, while DP maximizes it to 165Hz. I don’t think it’s a hardware issue, because I can game in 4K HDR @165Hz over DP just fine and YouTube in 4K HDR is absolute eyeball candy. Anyway, this is only an issue with the Windows11 Netflix app, and the problem goes away if I’m streaming in 1080P. Another thing to be mindful of with this monitor are the infamous burn-ins associated with OLED panels. Supposedly, Alienware says this panel was designed to prevent them and they stand by it with a 3 year warranty. There’s a pixel refresh reminder that automatically pops up after about 4 hours, but you can turn it off. I don’t know if there’s pixel shift to prevent burn-in like plasma TV’s had, but so far so good. I do try to be mindful of not keeping a static image on the screen for too long, but the warranty keeps me worry free.
Overall, if this monitor is in your budget, buy it. Having true HDR makes a world of difference in dark scenes, and the extra wide curved 4K format is just delicious. And despite officially being a Freesync monitor, I’m happy to report it’s also G-Sync friendly. This is a wonderful gaming monitor and I’m looking forward to playing a lot of Diablo on it.

Great work laptop. True 10 hr battery life.

I love the Dragonfly Pro 14 as a day to day and work laptop. It’s snappy, has a good typing keyboard, an excellent touchpad, and a bright and colorful touchscreen. It’s also very well built, with a stiff aluminum and magnesium chassis adorned in an understated matte black finish. I feel like this is the laptop Batman would use, and I stand by that claim. Partially because it offers a legit 10 hours of battery life which is essentially an all day charge. That’s 10 hours of being able to work anywhere, which is a comfortably long leash of freedom. It’s mated to a backlit keyboard with keys that are comfortably spaced and offer good tactile feedback. The haptic touchpad is accurate and a bit magical. I’m fascinated by how it makes it feel like I’m actually clicking the touchpad when in reality, it’s not moving at all. The best part is that you can “click” any part of the touchpad and receive a confirmed “click” which means you don’t have to reach all the way down to the bottom edge of the touchpad. It’s only a matter of inches, but the extra margin of error comes in handy when trying to rush through things. It’s small details like these that make the Dragonfly Pro 14 a joy to use, not to mention the bright and responsive 1920x1200 touchscreen. Covering 100% of the sRGB spectrum, colors are gorgeous and deep. Screen protection comes by the way of Corning Gorilla Glass, which should keep a clean finish over the years. Sound is by Bang & Olufsen, which is good, but for some reason the internal speakers are incompatible with Dolby Atmos. Not a big deal though as it still sounds good and movies look great. Port wise, I hope you like USB-C, because that’s all you get. Of all ports, it’s a good one to be stuck with, but you’ll need an adapter if you want to plug in anything else. That includes headphones too. On the bright side, you can plug the 96 watt charger into any of the 3 ports to recharge the laptop. Being able to move the charging cable to either the left or right side is a type of convenience I’ve only dreamed of until now (again, little things), though it’s still no excuse for not having a headphone jack. Speaking of which, while I love the Dragonfly Pro 14 as a day-to-day and work laptop, it’s not without some faults.
While snappy with photos and spreadsheets, it struggles for gaming. I tried Cyberpunk 2077 as a torture test and it crashed every time I tried to just start the game. Plants vs Zombies 2 through Game Pass / EA wouldn’t load at all, though that might be an EA/Game Pass issue. Surprisingly, Forza Horizon 5 was pretty smooth, though all of the graphic settings were set to low and it took a long time to load. The built-in camera sounds good on paper, but so far it seems like the average run-of-the-mill laptop cam. It’s still grainy in low ambient light, but it works well for Zoom, Teams, etc… There’s 4 special keys on the right side of the keyboard, which is marketed as a big feature, but only 1 is reprogrammable. I get having the Customer Service button stay static, but I really don’t need a key dedicated just opening the MyHP app. I hope this gets changed in a future software update as having 3-4 programmable keys would actually be really useful. And my last gripe is that it’s not user serviceable, so don’t plan on upgrading the RAM or HD later on. You get it as you got it, and it’ll stay that way.
Fortunately, the Dragonfly Pro 14 is fast with office apps and websites, so it should hold up for quite a while. With a bright screen, all day battery life, and a keyboard that feels good to type on, it’s a great laptop for school, work, and would make excellent fleet laptops for company staff. Especially with the dedicated customer support button to instantly bring help for any tech issues.

- Fast WiFi with good range
- Great do it all laptop

- Dedicated screenshot button
- Programmable key
- Quiet
CONS
- Bad for gaming
- Have to turn on keyboard backlight
