Excellent 1600dpi Wireless Gaming Mouse
on December 27, 2019

The Alienware AW610M is an excellent ambidextrous, wireless gaming mouse. The Lunar Light color scheme sports the classic computer slightly off-white with a black rear base that serves as a thumb rest. In terms of lighting, there's little strips on the side of the thumb rest base that light up, as well as the Alienware logo and another strip behind the thumb wheel. Only the latter serves any true function, but it's a gaming mouse, so lighting efx are essential. The overall shape is a bit odd at first, like a regular sized mouse with a black tail stuck onto it, but it grows on you. I think the fins of the black base that serves as thumb rests could use more contour. It makes for an interesting shape, but it's not the most comfortable mouse I've used. This is likely due to being an ambidextrous design.
Functionally, this mouse is fantastic. It uses a 1600dpi PixArt sensor, which is honesty overkill, but I guess you can't have a serious gaming mouse today without at least offering 1600dpi. It's just too sensitive in most situations. Thankfully, there's a button right behind the scroll wheel that lets you adjust the dpi on the fly. It can be customized to 5 user programmable levels in the Alienware Command Center app, which you'll need to download to customize the settings on this keyboard. From the Command Center, you can set the different level of dpi, individual mouse lighting, lift off clearance, and program macros for the side buttons.
In terms of setup, it's straight up plug and play. This is NOT a bluetooth mouse, so you'll have to use the provided cable and use it as a wired mouse, or simply plug in the USB receiver and you'll be up and running in seconds. As a high end wireless gaming mouse, it polls at 1000hz, so it's extremely responsive, which is also likely also why there is no bluetooth option. Thankfully, the micro usb cable it comes with also serves as a charging cable, which powers a battery that lasts a claimed 350 hours on a single charge! That's just over 2 weeks on a single charge and that is absolutely amazing.
The Alienware 610M is a well-built, responsive gaming mouse with a battery life of over 14 days on a single charge. Alienware takes their products seriously and it shows.

Holy Mother Of God

This is my first Alienware and I am now a believer. It's actually my first time coming back to a Windows PC since the XP days, and while I've used Windows 10 occasionally, I never enjoyed it. It always seemed like it needed some tweaking and lacked the polished, intuitive experience of Apple's OSX. The Alienware Aurora R9 changes that.
I mean yeah, if a program has difficulty running with hardware specs like this, it's probably a faulty program. This thing is a monster, with 16GB RAM, i7 9700 processor, and the amazing Nvidia RTX 2080 Super. Yes, RTX as in Ray Tracing capable, which is the hottest thing in gaming now and likely the future of things. In short, it enables games to focus the light and shadows based on the character's position in real time, meaning more realistic depth, light, and shading. Some games use ray tracing better than others, but it's early and the results are already promising. I ran Metro: Exodus and let it automatically optimize graphics after scanning the hardware specs and almost everything came back set to Ultra. YES PLEASE. The game runs smooth as butter at 1080p and has impeccable details. What's also fantastic is how quickly everything loads, so there's minimal downtime between stages and respawns, even with almost everything set to Ultra with ray tracing. Again, this thing is a monster! So much so, that I'm considering buying Borderlands 3 for PC even though I already have it on PS4. The Playstation noticeably struggles at times during gameplay, while the R9 seemingly doesn't break a sweat doing anything. And with a rig this capable, it'll be quite a while before I'll need to make any upgrades.
Outside of the hardware, the Alienware support tools do a good job of making Windows 10 a smooth experience. It automatically scans and optimizes things for you, including installing updating drivers if needed. It also has a nifty program called Mobile Connect that syncs with your Android or iPhone. And while most programs that offer phone syncing seem underwhelming, this one is pretty nifty. It was an easy setup to my old Android LG v20, which essentially consisted of downloading an app, a few code confirmations and 5 minutes later I was set. It shows your phone notifications as Windows notifications, tells you if someone is calling, and even take the call if you have a microphone connected. What's really cool is that it easily lets you mirror your phone display. I'm not sure when I'll need to use this feature but I really loved how easy it was to do.
If you're looking for an ultimate gaming rig, search no more. It's got blazing fast hardware, one of the best graphics cards in the market, ray tracing capable, coaxial and optical digital audio output, tons of USB ports, HDMI output, Display Port, handles 4K video editing quickly, and can smoothly play just about any game on the top graphics setting. Even Crysis.

Close, comfortable shave on the first try.

The Norelco 2500 is an excellent dry/wet electric shaver. The descriptions online didn't mention that it's wet capable, but it's in the manual and I can confirm first hand. I'm coming from years of using a traditional blade razor and had bad luck with my last and only other electric razor. Supposedly, you need to use a shaver consistently for 3 weeks for optimal results as hair adjusts to the new cutting pattern, so I wasn't expecting much on my first shave. Boy was I wrong.
It's exactly what I envisioned the first time. Something I can walk around the house doing, or casually while sitting in traffic. Maybe while pacing around the office, brainstorming my next lunch. It's cordless, fully charges in an hour, and gave me a baby smooth shave on my first time. I didn't even have to spend long, just a few minutes and my face was baby smooth. It even has a pop up trimmer for sideburns and edges, but it was a bit of a struggle to get a close shave with it on my sideburns. It did better shaving upward, but still not as close as the main shaving element with the 3 flex heads. I can live with that. The 2500 is washable, quick charging, and offers a very close and comfortable shave. If you've had bad luck with electric razors before, definitely give the Norelco 2500 a try.

Quieter than a library. Great on any surface.

The Pebble is an excellent wireless mouse. It's as thin as a deck of cards, feels solid, and tracks on seemingly every surface. It passed the "use my thigh as a mouse pad" test with flying colors, and even tracks well on my bulky comforter. The buttons are quieter than a mime, yet give enough tactile feedback to confirm you've clicked something like a button should. The scroll wheel has notched feedback and a single AA battery supposedly lasts 18 months. It's about 18 months too early for me to verify that, but I'll be impressed if it comes anywhere near that.
In terms of setup, you can either use connect to it through bluetooth, or the supplied USB wireless receiver. The receiver is thin and almost fits flush when inserted, so you can be lazy and keep it plugged in while traveling with your laptop. I setup the Pebble on both a Windows 10 PC and a Macbook Pro and had no issues connecting or working with either. There's no hot buttons or any fancy functions, but the Pebble does what a basic mouse is supposed to do and does it very, very well. If you're looking for a silent, compact, wireless mouse, you should definitely checkout the Pebble.

Slick front and rear dash cam on a budget
on November 12, 2019
Posted by: BIGASN
from Olney, MD
The Rexing M1 is an excellent front and rear dash cam at a good value. In fact, this could easily be a 5 star rating with a simple firmware update. Let's start with the good.
If you've ever wanted a hidden screen in your car, you're in luck. The Rexing M1 straps onto the front of your rear view mirror with elastic bands holding it in place. Yeah, the little slide out camera is a bit of a give away and so are the power and camera wires on top, but it's fairly low key overall. What's really nifty is that the whole mirror is a screen, unlike most systems where the screen is just a box in the mirror. By doing this, the reflection is consistent for the whole mirror so it's not obvious it's hiding a monitor for a much better stealth effect. Plus you can use it to live stream the rear view camera for an extremely wide rear view mirror view. Sometimes I'm torn between using it in mirror mode or live streaming the rear view camera, but the only reason I'm undecided on this is because of how good the cameras are. The picture quality is crisp, bright, and offers good color rendition. What's most impressive is how well they do in low light. It's noisy in absolute darkness, but does a surprisingly good job while driving through town at night. The #1 thing a dash cam should be good at is being a camera, and for the budget the Rexing M1 passes with flying colors.
If you really want to make this a slick item, get it professionally installed so all the wires are hidden and the mirror blends in. The wiring harness for the rear camera attaches to one of your reverse lights, so the mirror automatically switches to the rear camera view when the car is put in reverse. You can set the screen to timeout after the car is out of reverse or to constantly live stream the front or rear camera angles. It's a touch screen display, so switching views is as simple as swiping left and right. There's a few things you can customize in settings like smart illumination, picture quality, and contrast, however I wish it was possible to change to a 12 hour clock format. I don't really mind the military time, but I'd rather not have to do the math. Maybe in a future firmware update? Speaking of which, I updated mine to the latest firmware and it unlocked a higher quality SHD recording quality. Unfortunately, setting it to this mode disables the rear camera completely, which means it’s only useful if you're using it exclusively as a front dash cam. Personally, the FHD quality is crisp enough and keeps the rear camera alive, so that's where I keep it. I absolutely love that it records the front and rear at the same time and the built-in mic does a great job of picking up sound. What also makes the M1 a delight is that it records video in the .mov file type. This is playable by most video players today, meaning no need to waste time converting files. Just drag and drop the file to where you want it. EASY.
While the Rexing M1 is a solid piece of hardware overall, it could easily be a 5 star item with a firmware update. I'd love to see a 12 hour clock, parking lot monitor feature, and an SHD mode that keeps the rear camera alive. Also, the screen time out feature is called screen saver for some reason. Translation issue? Either way, it's a solid unit and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a stealthy dash cam.

Great Portable Contract Printer
on November 4, 2019
Posted by: BIGASN
from Olney, MD
I've been looking for a truly compact and portable printer to take out with me on sales presentations and negotiations to write and print contracts, photos, and leave behinds on the fly. It's so much more satisfying and leaves a greater impression when you can print out new contract terms or sell sheets and give it to your client right then and there. If you're looking for such a printer, the Epson WF-110 fits the bill admirably.
There's a lot to like here. Size wise, it's competitive with other printers in this category, should fit inside an average briefcase, and fits perfectly in my leather laptop messenger bag. At about 3 pounds, it weighs about the same as another laptop, which is remarkable when we're talking about a wifi printer with a built-in battery that can do legal, letter, 5x7, and 4x6 prints. The battery is good for 50 color and 100 black and white prints, which should be good for most portable purposes, however I always bring the AC/charging cable with me anyway. Getting setup to print is a pretty quick and easy affair as well. The printer has a little digital screen to hook it up to your WiFi network for wireless printing, or you can connect to it directly if a network is unavailable. From my Android phone, it was as simple as downloading the "Epson iPrint" app and following the prompts, and from my MacBook I just had to add a printer in System Preferences and it was ready to go in just a few clicks. I think setting up the printer's WiFi as the first step will make everything else easier setup wise. I was able to configure both my laptop and phone with the printer in about 8 minutes and haven't had to reset or reconfigure anything else since, so I'm pleased. I was able to print from my laptop and phone with the printer 40 feet away in another room at the other end of the house, so I'm happy with the range as well.
Print speed wise, it's noticeably slower than a regular full-sized printer, but you have to expect some compromise when going to something smaller, lighter, and portable. Black print speeds aren't bad at all, but full color prints slow it down considerably, which is why I think this is more suited for contracts and mostly text based prints. However, it does print photos and images fairly well. On Kodak Super Glossy 4x6 paper my color photo prints came out with good color and passable resolution. It's sharp enough to put up on a fridge door and most conventional photo prints, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for professional quality photo printer crispness. That's a bit unreasonable to expect in this compact package anyway. Thankfully, it does a great job for text, word docs, emails, and webpage printing on basic 8.5x11 paper.
If you're looking for a quality portable, wireless color printer, definitely give the Epson WF-110 a look. You can essentially fit an entire office workstation (printer, paper, laptop, chargers) in a messenger bag.

Solid compact microwave with silent mode!
on October 29, 2019
Posted by: BIGASN
from Olney, MD
I absolutely love my Breville toaster oven, so was excited to pick up one of their microwaves as well. This is a compact model that'll fit in most places with a bright silver finish that should blend in with most interiors. It's really nothing fancy from a microwave standpoint, it heats up food very well, but it has a few features that help it stand above the rest. My absolute favorite is the mute button, which allows you to turn off all the beeps and chimes at the simple touch of a button. As a fan of late night eating, this has been a dream come true, a day... errr night, that I can heat up a late night snack without waking up anyone I would have to share with or ridicule my lifestyle choices. And to compliment how discreetly you can heat up food, the door has a silent, soft latching mechanism so you can open and close the microwave with barely a sound. Outside of the focus on being silent, one other feature that I didn't realize would be so useful is setting the microwave time with the knob. It makes setting the time as simple as rotating a dial, but the best part about it is being able to add time while it's currently cooking with a simple turn of the dial. Most microwaves only let you add time in increments of 30 seconds without having to stop it, so it's kind of wonderful that I can add time in increments as small as 1 second. This is especially handy when I have others helping me in the kitchen but aren't familiar with how long things need to be heated up. I love using a dial to... dial my cooking time down on the fly. In an ever increasingly touch screen world, it feels so satisfying to have a knob to turn. And if you're not sure how much time things need, there's a popcorn and beverage one touch button that makes it easy. Just press the button, use the dial to select what size you're heating up and voila, it takes care of the rest. Very handy if you're working on several dishes, and I find the beverage option works well for soups too.
If there's any downside to this unit, I was a bit disappointed the front is plastic. The main body is metal and it's put together well, but for a Breville unit, a metal front fascia would help add to its luxury appeal. Of course, there's always the higher end models for that...

It's like having an assistant chef.

The Ninja Foodi is a blender that cooks. A BLENDER THAT COOKS! I recently learned that such things even existed, so when I saw Ninja come out with one that had a few programs, I had to see what the deal is.
Physically, it's an attractive and very well made blender that feels sturdy and is surprisingly easy to clean. There's 2 main components like most blenders, except the blender jar has a heating element built into the base. I'm not sure if it's made of Pyrex, but it's thick glass that'll retain heat and stand up to abuse well. Unfortunately, while this makes it a sturdy unit, it also makes it relatively heavy as well. It can seem a bit cumbersome at times, but the trick is treat it like a pot and not be shy about using 2 hands when handling it. On the bright side, it doesn't budge when placed onto the blender base and the jar is incredibly easy to clean. In fact, it's the easiest to clean blender I've ever used. Just do a quick rinse of the inside, 2 cups of water, a few drops of dishwasher soap, and press the "CLEAN" button. Yes, it has a clean button and it makes cleaning up afterwards as simple as pressing a button and rinsing/drying it off. This is key, because I hate cleaning dishes and wish for a world where everything cleaned itself. Being practical will keep me using the devices, but that doesn't mean anything if it doesn't help make delicious food. "So, how'd it do you", say?
Outside of using it as a normal blender (which it performs very well as), I tried the tomato soup and chicken noodle soup recipes that they provided. The tomato soup is a 2 step process that involves adding a few ingredients, using the "saute" function, and then adding the rest of the ingredients and pressing the "smooth soup" button. That's it. It does the rest of the work for you and it's honestly kind of fun to watch. Saute is a 5 minute program and all 3 of the soup programs seem to be 30 minutes long. It'll do a quick spin, and you'll gradually see the soup start boiling. I was a bit skeptical at how the soup would come out while watching it cook, but it did a fine blend in the last minute and the soup was homogenous with excellent texture and consistency. Finally, after a cute little chime, the tomato soup in my bowl and it was.... ok. Disappointed in my first bite, I did what all aspiring chefs do and went off script. A bunch of softened butter, a dash more cream, a pinch more salt, hit pulse a few times to mix it all up, cook on high for another 2 minutes, and the soup came out wonderful! But we expect a blender to do a smooth soup well, how about a hearty soup like chicken noodle?
This was the easiest chicken noodle soup I've ever made. I followed the recipe provided by Ninja, which is essentially just chicken, carrots, celery, chicken stock and spices. You clean and cut everything up into 1" pieces and place them all into the blender jar and then press "hearty soup". That's it. You can add egg noodles in the last 6 minutes if you'd like, but totally not needed, and the whole cooking program is only 30 minutes. It cooked the soup and chicken first and then pulsed a few times to shred the chicken and chop the veggies just right. The chicken soup came out delicious and needed no additions or additional work at all. I was curious how a hearty soup with a bunch of stuff in it would come out in this blender, and it performed remarkably. It was like having an assistant chef in the kitchen making chicken soup while I focused on the rest of the meal. Knowing more about how it works now, I've started using the manual cooking mode more and am a big fan of this machine. And the best part is that when you're done cooking, all you have to do is rinse the jar out, run the clean function, and it's all cleaned up and ready to go again. It also has an "extract" mode that I haven't tried yet, but it's supposedly good for making infused water and I saw a tasty recipe for raspberry lemonade in their menu as well.
If you're in the market for a blender that you can cook in, you should definitely give the Ninja Foodi IQ a look. You can mix drinks or make chicken soup at the touch of a button and I feel corny for saying this, but it really has never been easier. Outside of room service, of course.

A solid brew every time.
on October 13, 2019
Posted by: BIGASN
from Olney, MD
Mr Coffee built this machine with a focus on making an easy, consistent brew every time. There's numbers and color codes to match on the machine water level, carafe, and supplied coffee scoop. The intention is to fill each one to the same # level each time so you'll have a consistent brew each time. It makes sense, though more experienced coffee users probably have their scoop and water measure down already. Some of the other features I was happy to see were the built-in water filter and "brew later" feature.
The water filter is a simple cartridge you have to replace monthly. I honestly don't know how well it works because I haven't tried it without it, but it's a good feature for coffee snobs. Outside of making a solid cup of coffee, the "brew later" is my favorite part of this machine. It's not anything ground breaking, but being able to prep my coffee the night before and have it automatically brew for me in the morning is fantastic. No longer will I have to decide between getting my coffee ready or answering the beckoning of my cat to scratch her back in the morning.
Aesthetically, the body is adorned in a classy silver finish with a simple, modern look. It's unmistakably a coffee machine, but with nice curved edges that'll look good on just about any countertop. It's light overall and seems decently built, however I was kind of hoping it was metal. Then again, that would certainly increase the price point so I'm fine with it. I'm nitpicking here, which is generally a good thing.
There's fancier coffee makers out there, but if you're simply looking for a nice coffee maker with a few excellent features that makes a consistently good brew, you'll love this machine.

Bright and Crisp with Great Color and Black Levels

I love this monitor. It's extremely light and very thin without the base. I mounted mine to an adjustable arm, because they're finally affordable now and I'm about that baller life. All jokes aside, the image it produces is fantastic. It's bright with vivid colors and the anti-glare works impressively well. While it's lauded for having Freesync capability, another feature that everybody can enjoy is that it's bright without straining the eyes. This is extremely useful for anyone looking at the screen for more than a few hours a day (most of us). The 4ms response time ensured my PS4 was smooth and it worked great as an extended screen to my MacBook Pro as well. The picture looks great out of the box and from a wide angle! The only gripe I have with this monitor is that I wish it had more inputs. At least a 2nd HDMI input, but that's nit picking. This is a great monitor at a very reasonable price point. If you're looking for a bright 27" display that puts out smooth, vivid images that won't strain your eyes, you will not be disappointed.

Not 4k. It's 2560x1440. Think of it like 2K.

HYPERBOOM rocks a supermassive sound and extreme bass that takes your party into the stratosphere. Its phenomenal dynamic range brings your tracks to life, rendering every sound level in gorgeous detail. The brainy adaptive EQ reads the room—or patio, or rooftop—and automatically customizes the speaker’s sound until it’s utterly perfect for the space. Two Bluetooth, one auxiliary and one optical inputs let you and your friends connect four devices and easily switch between them, so the music never has to stop! With a rechargeable up to 24 hour battery, HYPERBOOM goes all night—and anywhere—from your living room dance-off to the ragin’ roof party.

Does it provide power to whatever is plugged in via the auxiliary input? (e.g. old iPod plugged in with poor battery life)

The Hyperboom has a USB port that's specifically for powering other devices so you should be good!

Can the AW510k keyboard be purchased with Cherry MX Red SILENT switches?

It currently uses the Cherry MX red switches, which I believe by color code are the silent switches.
