AN ABSOLUTE BEAST OF A GAME MACHINE!
on July 17, 2020

from Marysville, OH
I've been a longtime Dell fan, having purchased their products in the past, but there's no question some of the competition has been pretty formidable as well. So when it came time to find a reasonably priced laptop to be able to game on the go I took a look at the Dell G5 and the specs seemed to match what I was looking for. Not only did I want a good, or maybe even great, machine for on the go, more importantly I was looking for a laptop that I could use on my 65" 4K HDTV to game on. Getting the Dell setup was very easy and didn't take long. I also didn't notice hardly any bloatware, a real nice change from my last Dell experience about 15 years ago (which was filled with all sorts of software).
The only issue I did have with the setup was the Alienware keyboard lighting software didn't seem to do anything to change the keyboard lights. After 20 minutes of messing with it I was stumped. Finally I restarted the program and it asked me to get additional software from the internet in order to update the Alienware software. I clicked yes and waited. Nothing happened! So I restarted again, same question, I said yes and this time something began downloading.
The program restarted and the lights still did not work. However I noticed there was a dim or dark setting in the software and once I flipped that over to dim then the lights came on! Sort of strange, why not label it on or off? Dim and Dark are a strange label. But it then worked and gave me a couple of choices for lighting (I do love the lighting) and I was off and installing.
First of all the 512Gb SSD is an amazing drive, and yes this laptop boots up in less than 10 seconds, but if you want to game a lot you should consider buying more storage space, either upfront or like me, adding on a 1TB external SSD. I added the Western Digital P50 1TB SSD and was off and running installing all sorts of software. On the laptop I went ahead and fired up The Division 2, my favorite PC game at the moment, and was able to set everything to Ultra and it ran smooth at nearly 60FPS. I then hooked it up to my 65" 4K Samsung HDTV and for some reason everything was slowed down a good bit. It took me a few minutes to realize that the Division 2 had automatically adjusted to 4K and my game was running in 4K. It looked amazing but ran with too much slowdown. Time to dial back from Ultra. I dialed everything back to Medium, with a few settings at High and then it ran smooth as butter. I installed Anno 1800, Grand Theft Auto 5 and many other games and all ran fantastic at 4K with Medium to Medium-High settings.
No problems at all and have played many games all week, probably 25-30 hours or so and this laptop runs like a dream. No crashes which is fantastic considering my last experience using AMD (A $3,500 Falcon Northwest lan small form factor desktop which compared to this machine was more like a nightmare) but then that was 15 years ago so.....
Now one note, my wife did say it was awful loud when running a game (the Division 2) in regards to the fans, but then that is what headphones are for right? When not running a game it's dead quiet though.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention the Dell diagnostics and information station which ships on every Dell and does a great job of making you see everything you have on your machine and does a good job of explaining it all and maybe even making suggestions on what you might want to add. It is also setup to help a technician remotely diagnose any issues you may have on your new Dell which is cool. One word of note, the AMD Radeon software that comes on your Dell is Radeon Light and not the full Radeon suite. To download the full Radeon suite is 109Gb so that is likely why Dell didn't have the laptop come with the full suite of AMD Radeon software. If you have space to store the software I'd highly recommend getting it as it's a game launcher and does all sorts of cool things for FPS, your games, settings and etc.
This laptop does an amazing job of striking a really nice balance between looking like a sleek gaming machine but also appearing to be subdued and not too radical and "yo' bro" type of laptop. This is a beautiful machine that you will not feel ashamed of opening up on the airplane or in a coffee shop. Dell deserves kudos for their design here.
So to summarize, I'd highly recommend this machine, it's unbelievably powerful, fast and running in 4K it absolutely puts the current console, yes including the Xbox One X (which I also have), to absolute shame in regards to graphics and fluidity (which is absolutely just as important as graphics). One of my foster kids came up to my game room from playing Grand Theft Auto 5 on the Xbox One and saw me playing the same game on the Dell and exclaimed "how's come yours looks SO MUCH BETTER??" and I think that sums it up. The AMD Radeon 5600M is just a BEAST of a graphics card!!
I'D HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS DELL TO ALL YOU GAMERS!!

A beautiful, useful little mouse
on June 26, 2020

As a longtime computer user I have bounced back and forth through the years between two major brands, Microsoft and Logitech. When my work mouse, a Microsoft mouse, recently quit working due to a faulty scroll bar I decided this time I'd find a nice, inexpensive little Logitech mouse to replace it. I saw the Logitech had a nice cheap and cool looking little mouse and I really liked it so I decided to give it a try.
When the mouse arrived a few days later I really liked it and the design was really what I was looking for. As good as it had looked online it looked even better in person. Unpacking it I saw that it came with it's own battery. Setup was 3 easy steps. First, remove the tab to activate the battery that was already in the mouse. Second plug in the mouse USB receiver to your computer (it is located just inside the battery compartment) and last, turn it on. That's it, I didn't install anything and it was up and running and ready to go.
Using it is pleasant, it scrolls smoothly and I have had only one small issue with using it, one morning it was jittery so I unplugged the USB and used another USB port and it went away. Be aware there is no back button on this mouse so if that is important you may want to look for another model. I'd definitely recommend this mouse as it's a good little mouse that works well, looks nice and is a real value for the money. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

A bit perplexing to get setup, but works well
on June 16, 2020
Posted by: Shaunh20
from Marysville, OH
My wife and I are new foster parents, we just got certified and during our training we heard quite a bit about just how bad some kids can be with abusing internet privileges (we have no children of our own) so I made it a priority to see what we could do to help lock down our internet and have full control without making it difficult for those of us, like myself and my wife, to use the apps and programs that we want to use. So when I read about the Circle Home Plus I felt it seemed like a really good option.
Unboxing it was nice, it seemed like an Apple Product almost in how it was simplistic and elegant. But right away I noticed an issue in that the slip in to the product gave you the basic instructions on how to get the app but gave no indication on how to hook up the hardware. I thought, well the hardware must be installed after you get the app. I assumed the app would tell you how to install the hardware. Well firing up the app it was pretty clear that you were to choose whether you had hardware or not and that, in my opinion, means you should already have the hardware hooked up. Going to the site for Circle Home Plus help really didn't provide any diagrams or information. In the end I really couldn't find any information so I just hooked it up on my own the best that I could. I did get it to work but then once I got into the app there was some issues with getting the app to work. I'd click on sign in and nothing would happen. Finally after uninstalling and reinstalling the app and messing with it for a while I did get it to work. It was not a simple, or elegant, Apple like setup, that is for sure. And for that reason I'm deducting two stars.
Once you get the darned thing working it works really well I think. You setup a profile and then you have all sorts of controls on that profile. To add hardware to it, a phone, a PC, whatever, you just add that device into that profile. It's really pretty genius and there are all sorts of things you can do such as limit time, set a schedule, set certain apps to block, certain apps to allow, etc. The one issue I did seem to run into that should be noted is that when you block an app or change just about anything, it will take a few minutes, up to about 3 or 4 minutes in fact, for that to reach your phone or PC.
Before I speak to that though to add a child account you do get the same app (that's confusingly called the Parental App) and then on the parent phone you scan a barcode on the childs phone (that you setup as a childs phone of course) and that is how you setup the "satelite" accounts". But then let's say you want to just block Facebook. So you setup the child app, on the parent phone add the device into the childs profile, block Facebook. Then on the childs phone they can try to access Facebook and.....it will still work. However, wait a few minutes and a message will come up on their phone that Facebook has been blocked (or something to that effect) and then it will block. The time lag of action on the parent phone to institute changes should be noted because I kept changing things and nothing seemed to be happening until I figured out you have to make a change and give it some time to go into effect.
In the end I felt like this is a really good and a really useful product. But it needs a lot more documentation and explanation. I did not call support because I do not like calling support, ever if it can be helped...and ultimately I did figure it all out. However, I feel as if this product really cannot follow the minimalistic Apple type documentation and needs a lot more help in the actual box. If nothing else at least put instructions in the box detailing the hardware hook up and the do's and don't's on how to hook it up. And the company should seriously rename the app to remove the "Parental" part in the store because it makes no sense to download an app called "Parental Circle App" to a childs phone.
With all that being said I have used a lot of the options on my wifes phone to block it, to allow certain things, to do everything else you would want to do and all of it works and works well. So with the reservation of knowing the lack of documention I do recommend this product.

A really fantastic case that does it all!

The iPad Pro has slowly morphed from being a casual tablet to a full fledged laptop replacement and this product aims to completely remove any sort of last difference between the two products. As an old school (as in my iPad Pro) is older, I believe first generation I didn't know if this would work for me.
For example, I have no USB-C connector (which is what this keyboard uses to recharge so I had to buy that from Amazon for $14) because my iPad Pro came with a lighting connector. Also my iPad says it's 10.5" and this case says it is 11" but guess what, fits my iPad Pro perfectly so it's not an issue for those of you who may be wondering about that difference.
Anyways, how hard is this to get hooked up? Well about as easy as one can imagine. You slot your iPad down into the device, the keyboard light starts flashing, go to settings, Bluetooth and click on Logitech Folio Pro, you'll get a message to enter a few numbers such as 32760 on your keyboard (which took my brain a moment to process, what keyboard? oh THAT keyboard), I input the code into the keyboard and voila, it was all hooked up and working.
The keys are a little smaller than a regular keyboard but on par with smaller laptops and they do light up. However they do not stay lit in order to conserve battery. Speaking of battery, this one supposedly gets 3 months of battery use before you have to charge it up again. That is considering about 2 hours of use per day. You charge the keyboard back up again by simply inserting your USB-C cable (that came with your iPad Pro, again if you have an old lightning type connector you'll need to buy this USB-C to USB-C cable) and then get it all back charged up again.
I've not used this keyboard a lot but it seems pleasant enough to use for anything requiring data entry. This case does add some bulk to your iPad and I don't plan to use this all the time. I will use this when I go on the road and being on the road I think it's excellent to have a little more "armor" so to speak for my iPad Pro.
I also appreciate the support for the Apple Pencil as well, the case has a nice little slot (see pic at top) for you to have your Apple Pencil along with you for whenever you need it. And speaking of which, there's 3 modes, keyboard (upright) mode, drawing mode (lying down) and reading mode (fully folded back for simple browsing). Most of the time I will be in keyboard mode I think, as will most who are using this in a laptop replacement fashion.
I'd highly recommend this for you folks out there who are looking for a keyboard to pair with your iPad Pro and make it into a little laptop. Whether that is all the time or when you just go on the road. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

A must have for PC gamers, screaming fast!
on May 5, 2020
Posted by: Shaunh20
from Marysville, OH
I have been playing PC Games since 1988 and I've watched the evolution of the industry from the era of CGA 4 color graphics to our current amazing 2080 RTX graphic cards with millions of colors. There have been add ons that are game-changers for sure such as the advent of the sound card back in the 90's (yes I'm so old I can actually remember when games used the bleep-bloop of the internal PC speaker which probably cost about 20 cents LOL).
But let me tell you I don't think anything has changed PC gaming more than the revolution of SSD nVme drives replacing traditional hard disk drives that use mechanical, moving parts. To go from waiting for a minute or more for a level to load to near instantaneous loading times is just unfathomable and makes gaming so much more enjoyable.
So enter the WD Black P50 and it's easy ability to utilize using a USB-C port. A USB-C port is found on many modern PCs (check yours and you may have one and never have even known it) and provides very fast transfer speeds to utilize an external SSD drive such as the P50. However, don't worry if your PC doesn't have one as this drive comes with a USB-C to a traditional USB port.
This drive is about as easy as it gets to setup as you simply plug it into either the USB-C or traditional USB port and it shows up in Windows as a usable drive. Installing was a no-brainer and after using this some with some more recent games I can tell you that it did indeed make a massive difference from using a traditional hard drive.
Many things in the past have kept people from getting a SSD drive, often times it's the lack of an internal slot for one, the fact that someone doesn't really want to crack open their PC or just the simple fact of the extravagant cost of SSD drives. Well with this drive Western Digital has overcome both the inconvenience factor as well as the price aspect. This drive offers an incredible return on the investment for PC gamers and I cannot recommend it heartily enough. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Finally, a truly SMART air conditioner!
on April 21, 2020
Posted by: Shaunh20
from Marysville, OH
Smart products are always very helpful and fun to use once you get them installed. It's getting them working that can often be the primary headache though. As an owner of another air conditioner, the Frigidaire Cool Connect Smart Window Air Conditioner, I can tell you that it can sometimes be a real challenge. Usually my late spring consists of firing up the Frigidaire and spending an hour or so getting it on to my wi-fi network. Last year it got disconnected and I just gave up on it as it wasn't worth the hassle.
So upon receiving this I had a mixture of optimism and dread that it would be the same routine. Thankfully that wasn't to be the case. First of all this air conditioner comes packaged really nice with everything you will need in regards to installing it. It comes with more standard brackets and screws than my Frigidaire and, thus, makes for a better and more secure fit. It also comes with a decent amount of insulation as well, although perhaps getting a small insulation kit may be prudent depending upon your window and how it fits. Thankfully for my window this AC came with everything I need, and everything most people will need as well.
The instructions are clear, concise and lead you step by step on how to install it. I would have liked some of the pictures to be larger is my only complaint here. I am not the best at putting things non-electronic together so of course I struggled a little by installing the side flaps backwards, not once, but twice. I also input the fan part on each side in the wrong way which required a bit more hassle to get working. Just remember to snap the fan part into the AC first before the bracket; don't be a dummy like me and do it the opposite. After about 30-40 minutes of reading and getting the AC ready (please note that a "normal person" would take about 10 minutes at most here!) I was ready to throw this thing in the wall. First I input the insulation provided on the top, sides and bottom of the window, then mounted the air conditioner. After a few minutes of lining it all up I started inputting the screws to the window. I did that and then skipped the two base brackets because my window frame does not accommodate them. Inputting the side cover panels was very easy as it was just pull off tape on the back. I used the remaining insulation to do each side of the window to cover the 1/2" left slightly agape.
Now, using the app I was able to get connected to my network after a few minutes. The only issue I ran into during this process was I was long-pressing the WI-FI button and you are only supposed to just press it normally. On the Frigidaire you long-press the button for about 5 seconds to get it working. After wasting a few minutes figuring this out I was up and my AC was connected and controllable from my phone. No searching. No re-connecting. No nonsense, it connected and worked right away! This was huge to me and was such a relief that it just worked and was easy to do. Trust me, after all my battles with my Frigidaire this was so much better. Now let's hope it stays that way! Note that I also was able to very easily setup and control my new air conditioner with my Google Home using the setup instructions GE emailed me after getting the window unit online. Really cool.
As for how well the air conditioner works, well in my medium sized office that is about 150 square feet, this thing cooled it very quickly. The unit may not be large but the air that comes out is ice cold. My room went from 77 degrees to 74 degrees in about 15 minutes and finally settled to a cool 70 degrees at the thirty minute mark. I was very impressed and feel as if this unit outperforms the Frigidaire in both the smart capacity as well as the cooling capacity.
All in all I heartily recommend the GE Smart Window Air Conditioner. Especially if you are looking for a smart window air conditioner. I don't think it really gets any better than this unit to be honest. I hope all air conditioners going forward have this technology and can utilize it as handily as the GE AC does!

Here in Ohio there has been a law proposed that would prohibit picking up your phone while the car is in motion. This means you need a mount for your phone. Of course the law hasn't passed but I figured, why not go ahead and get a mount and get ahead of it because eventually this will be the law whether its this year or next.
I already had a mount in my car so this was going to go into my wifes car and support her iPhone 7. Mounting it to her phone was easy, then using the alcohol wipe on her dash was easy as well, and did no visible discoloration. We mounted the unit to her dash and waited a few days per the instructions, then she began using it. After about a week of use so far all has worked great. She did mount hers in a way that the phone overhangs another ledge so going over bumps really cannot cause the phone to tilt downwards, a complaint I've seen elsewhere about this type of mount.
All in all we are very happy with the Nite Ize, well my wife loves it and as they say Happy Wife, Happy Life! RECOMMENDED!!

A really high quality and great value camera kit!

I am always conscious about home security so although I already have an Arlo 4K camera I decided to add two more cameras. I could have added another Arlo but for the price of this package I was able to get 2 cameras. I was a bit wary of trying a different brand since Arlo works so well but I figured I would give Eufy a try. First impression upon unboxing was a really quality, Apple like product. My only complaint though was no instructions! I know everything is in the app and/or online but it's disconcerting a little to not even see a little poster showing the basics and/or a link to look at. But this was a minor complaint because the app was so good at walking you through everything and it was so simple that anyone could do it. After about 20 minutes, most of that was unboxing I was set up.
The only thing of note during setup was it tells you during the setup to press the sync button but I did that and it didn't sync. I thought "uh-oh" but I tried it again and this time I held the button down for about 2 seconds on the base unit and it made a noise and everything synced up. I felt this should have been noted in the app to say push and hold briefly instead of just "push the button". Again minor issue though. So, in conclusion, the setup was amazingly easy.
The cameras themselves are a little more rectangular than rounded/square such as the Arlo is. I think they look more in the vein of typical old school security cameras so I think they look really cool. There are two ways to mount them, either using a very strong magnet (which is how I mounted my Arlo) or a screw-in method where you mount the holder on the wall, then screw in the camera to the mount. Neither way will stop a criminal from snatching your camera, although the latter will make it a bit more time consuming and risky. There's also a really nice feature where if the camera is moved at all after you've mounted it then it'll set off an alarm on the camera as well as the base station. I have not tested this yet but I have read from other reviews that it's fairly loud but not ear splitting either. Now it also has a nice feature where it can detect humans only instead of all movement and puts a little snapshot of the human face on the clip, which is really nice. However, the Arlo camera goes one step further, indicating vehicles and animals as well. But I think the Eufy method is sufficient for security purposes.
The actual picture on the camera is really really clear and I have moved the cameras around and they present movement really well without clipping or getting behind in the frames so this means they have sufficient frames per second to capture everything without being grainy. Another nice thing about the Eufy camera is it uses an SD card and actually comes with a card to use, a 16GB card, which will be sufficient for most people's use to store recent clips. If you plan to go away for weeks at a time though you may want to buy a bigger SD card. Also, there are no subscription fees for Eufy which is really nice in this day and age.
My only other complaints here are that this camera does not yet work with Homekit (Eufy says they're looking into that possibility in the near future) and the app is written for an iPhone and there is no iPad app (so you have to use the double the screen method and turn your iPad). This camera system is high quality and Eufy needs to do like Arlo and create an actual iPad app for monitoring purposes.
Bottom line, I really am very happy with this camera set. I think it'll work really well with the Arlo to help ensure my home has no evil shenanigans going on. I haven't yet decided where I am going to permanently mount these but I know I'm going to mount them up pretty high (just in case someone does want to try to snatch the camera). I'm really excited about these being wireless and by that I mean the cameras really have zero wires. This allows great freedom in where to mount, only being restricted by your wi-fi signal. I'd heartily recommend this camera package to anyone in the market for a viable and affordable home security, zero-recurring charges, solution. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

A beautiful little tank that's fast for your Xbox!

I play a lot of games on my Xbox One X and I was getting low on storage, so when I saw this drive I thought, well why not, it looks cool, is big enough at 3TB and it's about time to upgrade. When I received the drive a couple of days later I opened it up and was greeted with a very tough looking, and feeling, alumininum type drive. I mean this drive is a little weighty and very sturdy. It feels like a little tank to be honest. And I really like the color scheme, with it having both black and white accents it is going to go with your Xbox One regardless if you have a white Xbox One S or the black Xbox One (or Xbox One X). It is a really nice looking drive.
Now installing on the Xbox One is a little easier than just doing a regular Windows PC drive you may buy from Best Buy. With those drives you have to format by selecting it from the menu yourself but this drive is really easy in that when you insert the USB plug into your Xbox One you will immediately get a prompt on screen asking you if you want to use it for media (like a PC drive) or actually put games on it. I chose the option to put games on it and after about a half second pause it asked me a second question - "is this where you want to install all future games?" and to that I said yes. That was it, it was just that easy and then my Xbox One X showed all kinds of space.
The drive is very quiet when functional, thanks to the large rubber feet on the bottom which makes it both quiet and less likely to vibrate. It also has a nice white status indicator to indicate the drive is on and it is near the back of the unit so it won't blind you or distract you from your living room chair when you're gaming.
All in all I'd definitely recommend this drive. It's wonderful in both looks, design and how it functions. All games load very fast, as fast as you can expect short of an SSD and it's installation couldn't be any easier. Did I mention it is built like a little tank too?
Sure you could buy another PC drive if you wanted to but why not buy this one that has it all and is made especially for your Xbox One gaming? Western Digital Black is the SSD in my gaming PC and now they are the HDD on my Xbox One as well. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
P.S. the instructions are great, #1 plug it in. #2 if you can't figure out number one call us!

A beast of an air purifier!

I think just about everyone really needs an air purifier but not many people have them because of the confusion and/or price involved in obtaining one. While the HealthPro Plus is not cheap it's a unit that works extremely well and covers a very large area in regards to cleaning. As an owner of two cats and two small dogs we have been on the lookout for an air purifier for a while now and the HealthPro Plus seemed to fit the bill. Receiving the unit is a little intimidating at first as the box is huge but once you get it out of the box assembly consists of just a few minutes of snapping two slender plastic parts and then inserting the wheels until they snap into place. The manual doesn't really mention the part about the wheels, just saying to put them on and at first when I did that they kept coming off. I put the unit back upside down and pushed down on the wheels though and they did snap into place and never came off after that.
The filters all are in the unit so really aside from the wheels (if you choose to use them, they are optional) you only really have to "install" a power cord, which is akin to plugging a cord into a hole, very simple. Once that is done you can use the unit although, at some point, you will want to program the date and time as well for the sake of being able to set the timer and schedule the unit to run if you so desire. This is all done very easy and intuitively.
Now there are a couple of cons of this unit. First, the biggest is there really is no way for you to measure the quality of the air with this unit and it does not seem to measure the air quality at all on its own to throttle back the settings, you must do this manually. I emailed support and never heard back. I also tried calling them during the morning hours but they are on strange hours due to the fact I believe they are out of Europe. The fact that you spend so much money on an air purifier that does not measure the air pollution at all is a bit strange, I suppose though if you can afford $899 for a purifier what is another $100 for an air measurement device though eh? The last con is the display of the unit is not backlit which means adjusting it in the dark is not going to really work, you will need a light. This is more of a minor quibble than a real complaint though but it should be noted if you plan to be using this a lot in the dark.
Now, the bottom line is this: how does it work? Well it works fantastic. Running on 6 (the max) it will purify a room (as far as I can tell anyways using my nose) in a very short amount of time. 6 is pretty loud though and 5 is also loud. Once you hit 4 it becomes like a small fan and go to 3 and it's barely noticeable. 1 and 2 is so low I can't even hear the unit running unless I really strain to hear it. My wife has been coughing very little and my allergy attacks (sneezing) have pretty much went completely away whenever the unit has cleaned the air so in that sense it's really doing well at it's job! The fact that this thing is on wheels is nice as it makes wheeling it around to various parts of the house to purify the air very simple.
This thing has done an amazing job of cleaning up the air in our very, very large house and has removed all odors of any sort, pet or otherwise. I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a very sturdy, workhorse of a unit that is going to be a beast at cleaning your air. Just be aware you probably are going to want to buy an air quality measurement device as well (which currently go for about $100-150) if you want to absolutely measure the air instead of just going by what you sense it to be. The fact that it looks like a small copy machine absolutely works in its favor as it's very unintrusive besides any sound that may be emanating from it depending upon the setting. RECOMMENDED.

Unleash the power of the Samsung 980 PRO with Heatsink for next-level computing. With a PCIe® 4.0 NVMe™ interface, get up to 2x the data transfer rate of PCIe® 3.0¹ while remaining compatible with PCIe® 3.0. ¹Results are based on a comparison with Samsung PCIe® 3.0 NVMe SSDs and SATA SSDs.

Anyone know if the heatsink is easily removable in case I want to use it in a gaming laptop? I am not sure this will fit my laptop 2nd bay, Asus ROG m16 SSD slot. Thanks!

I don't imagine it would be that difficult to remove, however, I have read that in doing so you will invalidate your warranty. I'd look for a similar drive without a heatsink.

Is this product has app that can be accessed from cell phone? All I want is to have a control from my cell phone when to allow the kids to access internet or to limit their game time. Such as if I can set a certain time limit for the specific game.

Yes you have an app to control the device on your phone. You cannot set a time limit for a certain game on Xbox but you can set a time limit for the Xbox.
