Perfect little earbuds
on October 6, 2021
Posted by: FlyingC

I got these to link to my work laptop to use during Teams/Zoom/Webex meetings and they work great. While not quite as comfortable as over-the-ear headphones, they certainly look a lot better for business meetings.
The charging case is quite handy and small enough to throw in your pocket, but I leave it plugged in and charging on my desk. When I get a call on the computer, I can quickly flip the lid open and grab one or both earbuds and they're linked up and working by the time I hit the "answer" button. I've been very impressed with how consistently they've worked.
For earbuds, I've found them to be quite comfortable even after a couple hours. They do a great job of blocking outside noise, and their sound quality is excellent. When I play music through them the bass is strong and it sounds just as good as my over-the-ear headphones. The microphones in them work particularly well. Everyone has said my audio is perfectly clear and doesn't sound tinny or anything. When I had them paired to my phone for testing, my wife said she couldn't tell any difference when I used them or spoke directly on the phone.
I've had other Anker chargers and batteries and I've always been impressed with their price and quality. These earbuds are no exception, and are even better than I really expected. If something happened to these (cats chew them up or something), I'd buy another set in a heartbeat.

Sturdy Coffee Maker
on September 22, 2021

I've been using this coffee maker for a week now and really like it. It's a fairly compact design given the size of the pot, and I think it looks really good on the counter. I like that the buttons are big and easy to use, and the clock display is also nice and readable even from across the kitchen. There's a convenient water level gauge/window on the side so you know how much water you're putting in.
It comes with a plastic mesh reusable filter which might be good enough for most people using slightly courser grinds than we use. With our coffee, we got a small amount of sediment (very fine texture) that settled in the bottom of the cups. This was fine with me, but my wife didn't like it. So now we use a paper filter and we're all happy.
You can brew immediately or set it on a timer like most coffee makers. You can also set the "keep warm" time between 1 and 4 hours, in hour increments. When the pot is done brewing, it beeps a couple times and then the display under the clock says "keep warm" so you know it's done. The hot plate seems to keep it at a good temperature.
We've had other coffee makers with the non-stick hot plate that started rusting before too long. Hopefully this one will hold up, and it still looks new after a week, but time will tell. One other possible concern for me is the steam from the pot while brewing goes up the face of the clock and buttons and water condenses there. Hopefully this won't cause a problem with the electronics down the road. I'm sure they must have known this would happen and sealed everything well.
Bottom line is I'm very pleased with this coffee maker. When it's just two of us we can easily brew a half pot, but when we have visitors we can make use of the full 14-cup capacity. I hope to use it for many years to come!

A Beautiful Beast
on July 22, 2021

This is a beast of a gaming laptop! I've only used it a couple days so far, but it's been super impressive. I've been able to run my games at full detail settings and the laptop barely breaks a sweat. I'm using Steam for my game library, but it comes with the Omen Gaming Hub installed (Omen is apparently the HP gaming brand).
Once my Steam games were installed, I could actually see and run them from the Omen interface, too. Even if I don't plan to use it to manage my games, it does have the handy System Vitals display which shows CPU/GPU temperatures, utilization, memory usage and upload/download speeds. You can also adjust the cool keyboard backlighting based on key groups. I could see where that might make it easier to keep track of where your hands are on the keyboard. You can also install Light Studio and go crazy with the dynamic key color schemes.
It's a pretty beefy laptop at a little over 5 lbs (and add 1.5 lbs if you're going to carry the power brick, too). But you get a beautiful matte finish 16.1 full HD screen (non-touch) and a 1TB NVMe drive. I don't know if it makes a big difference, but it's an all-AMD machine with the Ryzen 7 CPU and Radeon RX 6600M GPU. It's got plenty of USB and video-out port options, too. I'm able to plug in an external keyboard, mouse, and a joystick using all the onboard ports. I also like that it has the RJ-45 Ethernet interface available, if you ever need it. Wireless has gotten much better over the last few years, but it's still nice to have the cable as a fall-back.
Overall, I'm really happy with this gaming laptop. It feels like it's near the top of what's available these days for a portable gaming machine.

Theater sound in a small package
on June 25, 2021
Posted by: FlyingC
from Stillwater, OK
It took me about 20 minutes to unbox everything, connect all the cables, and get my first sound test going. I'd never heard a system with Dolby Atmos before, but I'm pretty impressed. My wife walked into the room and even said "wow, that sounds really, really good!" We have a living room that's open to the second story above. It's not a vaulted ceiling, but a traditional flat ceiling that's about 20' above the living room. I wasn't sure how the Q850A would sound in this situation, but it's pretty fantastic.
The only slight complaint I have is with the instructions--what came in the box isn't particularly detailed. The volume and subwoofer volume buttons on the remote about drove me crazy until I figured out you push/slide them forward or back to change the volume rather than push on them vertically.
The other issue that's still a mystery is the directions mention pressing the multifunction button for 3 seconds to activate Alexa. I don't know if that was a mistake in the manual or I just haven't figured it out yet. But pressing the button for 3 seconds doesn't do anything, and I wasn't able to find any other references about Alexa or how to set it up.
Other than those minor instruction issues, the rest of the setup was easy. I connected the TV to the HDMI ARC port. The wireless subwoofer actually linked up on its own when I powered it on, so I didn't even have to press anything. I did have to press the button to link the wireless rear speaker hub, but that worked exactly as described. Note that in addition to needing power for the subwoofer and the rear speaker wireless hub, you also have to run speaker wire (included) from each of the rear speakers to the hub. I didn't find any recommendation in the instructions for speaker placement, but we have a table right behind our sofa so it worked well to put the hub and speakers on it.
I think this is going to be a great sound bar system and it's about the closest I've come yet to feeling like my living room is a real theater.

Great compact laptop
on June 14, 2021
Posted by: FlyingC
from Stillwater, OK
This is a great little laptop in my opinion. With the 512GB SSD it boots super fast, and the screen is very sharp and easy to view. The 14" size is a nice compromise for portability, but yet it's still large enough that even my (somewhat) older eyes are able to read everything just fine. I was also impressed that I could get two external monitors working with it. I work from home so being able to get more screen real estate this way will be fantastic. Then, when I'm done and want to have something to read social media feeds and watch TV I can flip it into tablet mode and chill on the couch.
The laptop weighs just under 3 lbs 6 oz (at least on my kitchen scale) which is a comfortable weight to handle. Rather than the design being ultra thin and not having anything but a USB-C port like some laptops, this one is well stocked with two regular USB, one USB-C, an HDMI port, a headphone jack, and an SD card reader. Personally, I'd rather have the available ports and a slightly thicker laptop. I was able to get one external monitor via the HDMI port, then one via the USB-C port. In order to do that and get power, though, I used a Dell external USB hub that had power pass-through.
Rounding out the nice features are the fingerprint reader/power button and the backlit keyboard. I've got another laptop that does NOT have the backlit keyboard and I really miss it at times, so I was super happy this Dell had it. The fingerprint reader works great for me to unlock Windows without having to type a password or pin. Overall, I'm very happy with this device and would highly recommend it for someone looking for a 2-in-1.

Well-thought-out design
on May 6, 2021
Posted by: FlyingC
from Stillwater, OK
I have a lot of cats and a lot of vacuums that I use to battle the hair and tracked litter. I think this stick vacuum will become the most used in the arsenal for several reasons. First, it's the quietest of all my vacuums on the normal setting. I've found that about 99% of the time that's plenty of suction, though you can bump it up to turbo to get more suction when you need it (and then the accompanying high noise level). Most of the time I'm using it, though, it's very quiet. That makes my ears happy, and makes the cats happy.
Second, the run time on the two batteries. At the normal setting, I can hit all the main traffic areas in my 2500 sqft house on the first battery. But if I need it, the second battery is sitting in the charger always ready to go. The last big reason it'll be the go-to vacuum is the Kompressor feature that lets you keep vacuuming without having to stop and empty it so often.
Though Kompressor sounds maybe slightly evil or something, it's really a simple, effective addition to the usual dustbin in a handheld cordless. It's a lever you push that slides a ring down the inside of the bin to pack all the debris to the bottom and keep the filter area free. With all the cat hair I'm picking up, it's usually fluffy like cotton candy and quickly fills up the other vacuum dustbins. With this LG, though, I can press the cat hair down multiple times and just keep on vacuuming. It also helps to push out everything when you do finally stop to empty it. I think it's a great design.
Now for a couple of things I'm not crazy about, but others may think they're more useful. One is the WiFi connection and the app. I could see if you had other LG products it might make sense to add it to your home devices. But for me as the only LG device I have, I don't get much out of it. Basically, it sends me a push notification when the battery is fully charge. It's not like I'm waiting for that to happen, so I really don't care about it. I think it also has some documentation and troubleshooting help in the app, but I'm really not sure it's worth having it connected to my home Wifi.
Another thing is the wet mop head. It's really a slick design with the way they've incorporated the water tank in the head. But the mop is essentially two terry cloth pads that buff your floor. I tested it on a tile area where our cats track in a little mud from outside. Normally, I'd spray some cleaner on the area and use 3 or 4 paper towels to clean it up. The wet mop head did pick it up, but it also sort of smeared it around. I took the pads off, washed them out, and went over the area again and it got better. But by the time I did that, I was wondering why I didn't just do the paper towels and be done with it. I have another wet vacuum that dispenses cleaning solution, has actual scrub brushes, and vacuums up the dirty water which I think is a much better option for me. But, depending on your use, you might like it better than me.
The only other feature I wish it had was the ability to turn off the roller brush when you're on hard floors. It works fantastic on carpet and rugs, but it does tend to fling litter or bits of food around on hard surfaces. Other vacuums let you turn off the roller and just use suction, so I'm not sure why they chose not to do that.
At any rate, I'm loving the design of this vacuum. The charging stand is sturdy and works great to hold every tool and attachment that came with it (which is not always the case with others). The battery run time and ease of use make this a top-notch cordless vacuum in my book.

Portable vs. Window
on April 11, 2021
Posted by: FlyingC
from Stillwater, OK
If you're debating between a window a/c and a portable unit like this one, it's important to know their differences. It's fairly obvious the window unit is harder to install, not portable, and will take up half your window (depending on the size of the window). This portable one rolls around on casters and has a large exhaust air hose that connects to a lightweight and easy to install window adapter.
The less obvious difference is the efficiency between them. A window unit is more energy efficient. The heat is exchanged directly to the outside, and most importantly, condensation from the cooled air is drained directly outside.
With the portable unit, the heat exchange is all inside the portable unit, then the hotter air is blown through the hose out the window. Ideally, some of the condensation from the cooled air is also re-evaporated and blown out with the hot air. If there's too much condensation, then it'll pool in the internal tank and will eventually need to be drained. That hot air being vented outside has to be replaced, and it'll come from more outside air being drawn into the building through air leaks.
Though you save window space with this, it does take up a lot of floor space inside. The unit itself isn't that big, but the specs say it needs to be 30" from the wall and also to keep 30" clear around the rest of it for air flow. For my application, this becomes a problem. I wanted to use it in a bonus room above my garage that only has one window. But, unfortunately, I don't have a lot of free floor space (a home office, exercise equipment, etc.) so this isn't going to fit very well.
The condensation drain also needs to be accessed with enough room for a flat pan of some sort to catch the water. The drain plug is only 1" off the floor, so that's not convenient at all (see photo). I live in the south with a lot of humidity in the summer, so it's a given that not all the condensate will evaporate and get sent out the exhaust port.
Another issue is sealing the plastic plate that goes in the window for the exhaust hose connection. I have a 28" window which is well within the 20"-46" range they say it fits. The problem is at 28" the track extends into the opening for the hose which prevents you from connecting the hose (see photo). The only solution would be to cut the track to shorten it by an inch or two. This seems like a not well-thought-out design.
Finally, it's a small thing, but they don't include any foam pieces to seal the space between the double hung windows that's created when you have the window open, or anything to help seal around the plastic bracket that holds the exhaust hose. Without that, there are huge gaps around the plastic and a lot of outside air would constantly be flowing back in.
As the Shark Tank people would say, for these reasons I'm out. It may work fine in other environments, but for me I'm going to have to stick with my GE window a/c unit.

Now with 90W power passthrough
on March 15, 2021
Posted by: FlyingC
from Stillwater, OK
I have a work laptop that's very locked down, including having bluetooth disabled. So I've been living with plugging in a USB mouse and also an HDMI cable to an external monitor. At least once a day, I unplug everything including power and move to another location to work and that's been a bit of a pain.
Now, however, this adapter works great as a dock for that laptop. I can leave the mouse and monitor plugged into the hub, then just quickly pull the power cable and USB-C (from the hub) and move the laptop. When I bring it back and reconnect the hub, everything starts working almost instantly which isn't always the case with some other hubs I've used.
If you're looking at the DA300 model vs. this one, I think the only difference is the DA310 has an extra USB-A port as well as the 90W power pass-through capability which can be a very useful feature. You can plug a USB-C power source directly into the hub, then it powers your laptop through the USB-C out cable as well as anything else you have plugged into the USB-A ports. I'll include a picture from the quick start guide that shows the various options pretty clearly.
For external monitors, the hub has an HDMI, display port, VGA port, and USB-C (if you're not already using it for something else). However, it's important to know you can only use one of those at a time for video. So this won't work for you if you're trying to add two external monitors to your laptop, for example.
The hub itself is about the size of a Hostess Ding Dong if you're familiar with those. The very short USB-C cable that goes to your laptop is very cleverly rolled up or released by twisting the hub. In a few seconds you can have the cable stowed away and the hub's ready to go in your backpack. Overall, I'm very pleased with this hub and would not hesitate to buy another if I needed it.

A fantastic All-In-One
on February 26, 2021
Posted by: FlyingC
from Stillwater, OK
I've been using this computer for a few days now, and I haven't found a single thing that I don't like about it. Performance is solid, I love the screen, and the included keyboard and mouse are comfortable to use. When not in use, the system doesn't take up much space and it looks great. I'm using it as a second system on my work-from-home desk so I can take a break to browse, watch videos, or read the news without using my VPN-connected work system.
The full-size bluetooth keyboard is great to use, and the keys are even fairly quiet. The scroll mouse is comfortable and works well, and includes a tiny USB bluetooth adapter for one of the many USB ports on the back of the AIO. However, if you already have your own favorite bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo there's no reason you couldn't use that with this system instead. I think the included ones are great, though.
The non-glare, somewhat matte finish, touch screen is beautiful, crisp, and clear. I haven't found myself using the touch screen much, but when I did I didn't notice any fingerprints left on it so that's good. I also think the pop-up camera in the top of the monitor is a great feature. You no longer have to worry about covering up the camera so it isn't staring at you when you're not using it--I think all systems should be built like that! Another great feature is the screen can be tilted back at whatever angle is best for viewing in your setup.
I've heard the fan kick in a few times while using it, but it was much, much quieter than the fan on my work HP Elitebook laptop. I've also felt only the faintest hint of warmth around the top of the monitor, so it seems to run much cooler than I would have expected. It comes with a nice number of ports on the back (1xUSB2.0, 3xUSB3.0, 1xUSB-C, 1 HDMI input, and 1 HDMI output) and even still includes a wired Ethernet port. I may not need to use it, but it's nice to know it's there if I do!
I would not hesitate to recommend this Dell AIO. If something happened to this one or one of my existing desktops, I'd buy another one these to replace it. It's a fantastic AIO.

It's like a tax service dog
on January 27, 2021
Posted by: FlyingC
from Stillwater, OK
I've used H&R Block Tax (or Taxcut) since at least 2010 and have had good luck with it. Most years our return is fairly simple, but several times I've had employer stock transactions and even some self-employment income and the software has worked well. Once you start using it every year, it's also really convenient to import all your basic info from the previous year's return which saves a lot of typing.
Another nice feature that looks like it was added this year is the capability to import your W-2 information by uploading a PDF or picture of the form from your phone. It worked perfectly on a couple of W-2s, but on one it missed the state information for some reason. At any rate, it's a big time saver but you'll definitely want to double check all the entries and values to make sure it's correct (the program does remind you to do that). Unfortunately, the 1099s still had to be entered manually but I think they're not as standard of a form layout so that's probably understandable.
I think the software is pretty intuitive to use, and it lets you view or print the actual tax forms if you need them or just want to double check everything. The running total of federal and state refund (or lack thereof) is a nice feature while you're entering your information. Speaking of refunds, this software also includes a promotion to give you a 3.5% bonus (it used to be 5%) if you choose to get your refund as a gift card to a certain well-known online retailer. So, for example, if you get a $1,000 refund that way, the bonus will cover the cost of the H&R Block Tax software. I believe there are some privacy trade-offs with going that route, but depending on your level of comfort after reading the fine print that's an option worth considering.
It's really too bad that taxes are so complicated. I can't imagine trying to sit down and do them myself based on reading the instructions. For the small price of this software, though, I get a great tool to guide me through the labyrinth. This way I can continue to do my own taxes without paying a lot more and having to take everything to some professional who probably has a 50/50 chance of making a mistake on it anyway.

The V150 is a 100% wireless and portable security camera equipped with Vosker built-in solar panel technology and a long lasting 10 000 mAh rechargeable lithium battery. This LTE-based cellular security device is ideal for remote area photo surveillance where access to electricity and Wi-Fi network is impossible. Receive mobile alerts right to your phone and never miss anything again. Set it up easily and let it get to work, anywhere you need it.

How much range of motion detection does this camera have?

The specs list it at 90'. That may be under ideal conditions, though. In my situation, I think it was more like 75-80'.

Can it be used in regular floors?

Not sure what regular floors are, but maybe hardwood flooring? This works well on that--it has good suction and the wheels are large enough and slightly cushioned so they roll smoothly and quietly on the hardwood. Also works great on carpets and throw rugs. On some of the smaller rugs I reduce the suction a little (thicker carpet setting) to keep from pulling them up.

Fragrances including Fabreez are filled with chemical compounds that are highly allergenic. Is it possible to get Bissell off the shelf without fragrances allergens in the filters? Defeats the purpose of buying this for allergy sufferers!

While other models came with the optional extra Febreze filter, this one just came out of the box with a regular filter with no scent.

Meet the Logitech Pebble i345. It takes your iPad to higher places with a level of precision and control you can’t get with a tablet alone. Use it to click, scroll, and control your workflow like never before. It’s small, portable, and comfortable—so you can keep exploring, wherever you go.

What difference is there between the Pebble M350, M355, and the most recent i345. As I understand the M350 is the first version, the M355 is the second version, both are compatible with various operating systems including IPadOS, and the i345 only iPadOS

Actually, the i345 is compatible with any device that has BLE (bluetooth low energy) and not just IOS things. I've used the i345 with a PC and also a Chromebook. As far as I can tell, the only difference between the i345 and the M350/M355 is that the i345 doesn't have the USB dongle to use on devices that don't have bluetooth.

I believe it is 6 feet long.

With color night vision, the cameras included with this Lorex active deterrence DVR security system provide a clear look at your property even in low lighting conditions.

hmm.. NO PoE ? .. does this run on regular old school BnC connections ??? if soooooo..... i have old lorex 720p cameras on BnC right now ... wonder if i can just order cameras and swap out ??? thanks for the help for whoever answers these questions

Yes, it uses BNC connectors so your old cameras should work. However, if you try to use the older cable with the new 4K cameras you'll likely have a very degraded picture if it works at all. I tried it with mine and I could see part of the image, but the bottom half was messed up. When I ran the new cable that came with the 4K camera system, the picture worked perfectly.

Will Best Buy install the system and will it work with existing cameras?

Not sure if Best Buy will install, but you could certainly give them a call. As far as working with existing cameras, I was able to swap out my Swann DVR with this one and still use the old Swann cameras with it. As long as your cameras have a BNC-type connector, you should be okay.

Does this camera have tots of false positive motion alarms? Does it have thermal sensing for motion ?

I haven't noticed any false positives, though it IS very sensitive. So bugs flying near it (day or night) definitely trigger it to record. I think you can adjust the sensitivity, though I haven't played with it. You can also "blank" out areas of the camera view to ignore motion. For example, trees in view of one of my cameras move back and forth when it's windy and constantly trigger the motion. I was able to select the trees in the view and ignore motion there to solve that. I do not believe it uses thermal sensing for motion, but rather changes in the image it sees.
