It's like a tax service dog
on January 27, 2021
Posted by: FlyingC
from Stillwater, OK
I've used H&R Block Tax (or Taxcut) since at least 2010 and have had good luck with it. Most years our return is fairly simple, but several times I've had employer stock transactions and even some self-employment income and the software has worked well. Once you start using it every year, it's also really convenient to import all your basic info from the previous year's return which saves a lot of typing.
Another nice feature that looks like it was added this year is the capability to import your W-2 information by uploading a PDF or picture of the form from your phone. It worked perfectly on a couple of W-2s, but on one it missed the state information for some reason. At any rate, it's a big time saver but you'll definitely want to double check all the entries and values to make sure it's correct (the program does remind you to do that). Unfortunately, the 1099s still had to be entered manually but I think they're not as standard of a form layout so that's probably understandable.
I think the software is pretty intuitive to use, and it lets you view or print the actual tax forms if you need them or just want to double check everything. The running total of federal and state refund (or lack thereof) is a nice feature while you're entering your information. Speaking of refunds, this software also includes a promotion to give you a 3.5% bonus (it used to be 5%) if you choose to get your refund as a gift card to a certain well-known online retailer. So, for example, if you get a $1,000 refund that way, the bonus will cover the cost of the H&R Block Tax software. I believe there are some privacy trade-offs with going that route, but depending on your level of comfort after reading the fine print that's an option worth considering.
It's really too bad that taxes are so complicated. I can't imagine trying to sit down and do them myself based on reading the instructions. For the small price of this software, though, I get a great tool to guide me through the labyrinth. This way I can continue to do my own taxes without paying a lot more and having to take everything to some professional who probably has a 50/50 chance of making a mistake on it anyway.

Cool look, quiet operation
on January 13, 2021
Posted by: FlyingC
from Stillwater, OK
We're using this in our bedroom where we sleep with half a dozen cats. Surprisingly, so far, the air quality has had 0 across the board on PM (particulate matter). This might be because it's the winter with virtually no pollen and low humidity, but I'm still surprised there aren't more particulates in our air with the cats around. We'll see what happens this spring when the pollen comes back. The tVOC (total volatile organic compounds) has fluctuated a little more, but only between excellent and good.
The light bar on the top changes color according to the air quality (from red-very polluted to blue-excellent) which is kind of cool. We've seen it change from blue to green and back. Night mode turns off the display which is a must-have for the bedroom. The LED color bar is extremely bright even if you turn it to minimum via the app (but night mode turns it off completely). I set up a schedule in the app to turn that mode on during our normal sleep hours.
I did get it linked to Alexa, but that skill doesn't seem to work. Even though linked as a skill, Alexa doesn't recognize a device named "air purifier" which is what the skill says to use. Not a big deal though, because I don't really need to change the settings on the purifier much.
I plan to just leave it on auto and see how it does through the rest of the year. Hopefully it'll detect pollen and range fire smoke this spring and ramp up the fan to keep our air cleaner.
Here are some other observations and specs for the Blueair 7470i:
- I think the design looks really good in the bedroom and doesn't take up much space
- It's super quiet on the lowest setting. The specs say 25 dB up to 45 dB on the highest setting
- It uses from 8 to 48 watts
- The screen filters are easy to pull out and clean. The main filter is also easy to access and replace, but that shouldn't be necessary more than once or twice a year
- The filter contains an RFID to monitor usage, with a maximum 1-year filter life
- A replacement filter is $70 or 15% less with a subscription (subscription service coming soon according to the web site)
- The filters are not HEPA, but HEPASilent(tm). They claim the same level of filtration but this type allows air to flow more easily so it's quieter and uses less energy
- The unit has a 1-yr warranty that's extended to 5 years when you register, or apparently forever if you enter into a filter subscription

Great vacuum for pets
on January 7, 2021
Posted by: FlyingC
from Stillwater, OK
I've had some other Bissell vacuums and, with one small exception, this is a nice improvement over the others. The roller brush really does the job and doesn't very easily get hair tangled around it. It works perfectly against pet hair, but occasionally a much longer human hair might get wrapped around it. If you don't have humans with long hair in your household then that won't be a problem.
It was super easy to assemble the vacuum and get going. It's also extremely easy to switch from the floor setting to using the hand held attachments to clean furniture or dust things up high. The lift off capability is a great design. You can quickly lift it off the roller brush section by squeezing a lever then carry the canister in one hand and use the other to vacuum things. That worked really well on the stairs and using the turbo attachment.
The carpet height adjuster is really just adjusting the amount of suction through the hose and not the actual height of the roller. As you slide it to the thicker carpet setting you can tell it's just letting some air in to reduce the suction at the end point. This is important to remember if you want maximum suction when using the attachments (set it to the low carpet setting).
I have multiple indoor cats with a continuous supply of loose hair. This vacuum really does a great job pulling it out of the carpet and rugs, as well as gathering it from the hardwood floors. It's super easy to empty the canister when it gets full. A couple taps on the trash can and everything always came out with no reaching in to grab stray clumps of hair like on some models.
The one small exception to improvements I mentioned earlier is they didn't make an attachment with the silicone brush on it that works so well to loosen up hair from the cat condos and furniture. This vacuum just has a crevice tool/regular brush combo. I do miss the grippy silicone brush, but I can live without it given all the other improvements. The turbo tool can be used in some places to accomplish the same thing, but it's too big to go in some of the smaller areas I could reach before.
At any rate, it's still a great vacuum. And I'm a fan of Bissell having the pet focus and also donating money to pets as part of their business model.

True wireless earbuds with Active Noise Cancellation. The AU Titanium driver gives it a more realistic audio playback because of its three-layer 13MM Titanium film, giving this true wireless earbud a frequency range of 20Hz -20KHz. The noise reduction system inside the earbud generates sound waves that cancel out the ambient noise.

Nice for the price

I got these mainly to use on Zoom calls so I wouldn't have to wear bulky over-the-ear headphones. For a while, I did have some problems with them dropping the bluetooth connection and reconnecting on my MacBook. However, it seems to be better now so I'm wondering if there was some interference with one of my bluetooth keyboards. I also tested them with my Samsung phone and they've worked perfectly so far. Pairing with a new device is as easy as putting them in the case and pressing the button on the back of it.
The sound quality with these is way better than I expected. Listening to music, they had plenty of bass so they didn't sound tinny like on cheaper earphones that I've used. For calls, I really like that you can use both or one at a time and it's very seamless. The ANC (active noise cancellation) is okay, but not quite as good as some other premium brands I've used. However, turning it on noticeably reduces air conditioner noise or other constant levels of sound like that. It doesn't seem to remember that setting, though, so each time you have to long press the earphone to activate it. Not a big deal in the scheme of things.
I do love how compact these are and that they have a solid, rugged charging case that you can easily throw in a backpack or carry in your pocket. The battery life seems to be as good as advertised so far. I do wish the case was flat on the bottom so you could stand it up on the desk with the lid open to insert or remove the earphones. Overall, though, I'm happy with how they're working.

One giant pot o' coffee
on November 6, 2020
Posted by: FlyingC
from Stillwater, OK
A couple years ago we got a coffee maker with an insulated stainless carafe because we always seemed to break the glass ones. However, there were a couple of things we didn't like about it: You couldn't see how much coffee was in it, and the pour spout always caused dribbles of coffee to run down the front of the carafe. So we decided to try this new one and go back to a glass carafe.
Even though the "cups" are only 5 oz, the 18-cup carafe is still a pretty giant pot of coffee. It's great to be able to make that much, but it's also pretty heavy when it's completely full so no weaklings allowed to pour it. The spout works perfectly with no drips any more. Overall, we're very happy with this coffee maker so far. Here's a summary of some pros and cons:
Cons:
When full, it's 90oz of hot liquid
Glass carafe, while nice to see the coffee level, will probably eventually get broken
The "pause and serve" valve does tend to drip a little after removing the pot
Pros
Controls are intuitive and easy to use
The water level is clearly marked on the front of the tank
The coffee maker has a nice smooth shape, easy to clean
Cleaning cycle will be a handy feature
Pour spout works perfectly and doesn't dribble
Makes 18 5oz cups in about 12 min
Aging timer is a nice feature so you know how long the brew's been sitting there
Hot plate definitely keeps the coffee hot
Nice that it includes a reusable filter
Two year warranty

Compact car charger
on November 6, 2020
Posted by: FlyingC
from Stillwater, OK
This is a solid, reliable dual port 24 watt (total) car charger that doesn't take up a lot of space in your car. Each port supplies 12w or 2.4 amps of charging power. It also comes with a cable. It has a small white LED that comes on when it's plugged in, but it's not obnoxiously bright like some of them can be. There really isn't much else that can be said other than it looks good and does the job. Belkin has been a very reliable brand for me, plus this charger comes with a 2-year warranty.

Arlos are great cameras
on November 3, 2020
Posted by: FlyingC
from Stillwater, OK
I've been a user for several years now of Arlo cameras. I've got a mix of Pro and Pro 2 cameras for a total of 10 cameras. I pay the annual subscription to support the 10 cameras, get 30 days of recordings, and use the smart motion detection (animal, package, person, etc.)
I've also got two base stations spread out to give me a pretty wide range around my house. I live out in the country so I use these to monitor my gate/mailbox area, barn stalls, and basically most areas around the outside of my house. I've tried a few other cheaper brands, but the Arlos have been the most reliable.
When I saw the new spotlight camera, I thought I'd give it a try for my driveway parking area. Spotlight is a bit of an exaggeration as it's just a couple of bright LED lights. However, it does light things up well in the 10-15 foot range. The infrared view does have a little better range, but if you need to know the color of clothes someone's wearing then this is a great solution for night.
I do miss the magnetic mount capability that my other cameras have. This one requires using the threaded mount that you need to screw into to something. For my parking area, that's fine, but I have made a lot of use of the magnetic mount to easily put cameras on my gate and on T-posts to cover various areas. It's also then easy to pull them off to charge the battery. But, depending on your application, this may not be a factor. If I was afraid of someone walking off with the camera, I'd definitely want the thread mount.
The video quality and function is just as good as my other Arlos. It was super easy to link up to my hub and I had it recording in a few minutes. It also came with a 3-month trial of the smart recording service so you can try that out if you don't already have it. You can also use the camera over WiFi without the hub, but I don't plan to use it that way.
The two-way audio is another nice feature, but not one that I use in my particular application. 99% of my visitors are the 4-legged variety so we don't talk much. The integrated siren is also an additional feature over my existing cameras. It's definitely loud enough to be noticed by the intruder, but I'm not sure it's loud enough to attract a neighbor's attention unless they're very close by.
The Arlo cameras might be a little more expensive than others, but I've found them to be reliable and well worth the money. Plus, the Essential series is quite a bit more affordable so that could be a good way to try them out and see if you like them before going all in like I have.

An Awesome Oven
on October 4, 2020
Posted by: FlyingC
from Stillwater, OK
This Ninja oven takes up quite a bit of counter space, but it's totally worth it! It's basically a compact, fully functional oven plus the 9 other cooking modes like air frying. You can even dehydrate fruits and veggies or make jerky. The controls and display are all on the front handle which seems pretty clever since that keeps the electronics away from the heat.
The included sheets and fry trays seem well-built and are easy to use and clean. When you select the oven mode, it lights up the recommended slot to use for the sheet or tray which is really handy. I haven't figured out if it's adjustable yet, but the alert sound at the end is a bit on the quiet side so you need to stay nearby.
The oven is rated at 1800 watts, so you'll want to make sure it's the only thing running on your typical 15 amp circuit. The good thing is it seems to cook things really fast. You'll also want to make sure to keep some space around the top and sides because the outside does eventually get hot.
Like other Ninja products I have, this appears to be a well-designed, quality product. If you're looking for a multifunction countertop oven I think you'll be happy with the Ninja Foodi. I've had a few different brands over the years and this is by far the best.

Rechargeable, plus button customization
on September 21, 2020
Posted by: FlyingC
from Stillwater, OK
I've been using the Logi M355 mouse, but thought I'd upgrade to the new MX Anywhere 3. So far, I'm really loving it. The ergonomical shape is more comfortable, and the MagSpeed scrolling is great for quickly getting around Slack messages (or whatever long list you might be scrolling through). I was kind of surprised at how "loud" the mouse clicking is again after getting used to the M355. The quiet clicking in that model is really the only thing I miss from it, though. (And by "loud" for this model, I mean it's just a normal mouse click sound.)
Having a quickly rechargeable battery is a nice step up from having to find batteries to put in. Now, I just have to find a standard USB-C charging cable, of which there are plenty around my desk these days. Another great feature is the ability to switch between three different devices by clicking a button underneath. Paired with a Logi keyboard that has the same capability, it's super easy to use my work Macbook, switch over to my personal Windows laptop to send a quick email or whatever, then switch right back to the Macbook. It couldn't be much easier.
One other feature that I haven't played with too much yet, but shows a lot of promise, is the ability to customize the buttons for various apps. After you download the Logitech software you can set this up. One option that grabbed my attention was the ability to make the side buttons mute/unmute audio and video in Zoom. While I won't be scrambling to click on the unmute in the app and can simply click the mouse button, I'm a little worried I might accidentally hit the button sometime and unmute at an inauspicious moment. Even if I end up not keeping the Zoom customizations, though, it still has use for other apps.
Logitech seems to have really figured out how to make great keyboards and mice lately, and this is another great one in their lineup.

Large appetite, small stomach
on September 15, 2020

from Stillwater, OK
I really like everything about this vacuum, except the small dust cup. It has powerful suction with the wall outlet-powered motor and it's easy to use and maneuver. It's also easy to empty the dust cup, which is a great thing because you'll be doing it a lot if you have pets. I have multiple cats and before I got halfway up my carpeted stairs, I had to empty it. If they somehow could have made the dust cup larger this would be the ultimate vacuum.
I was a little worried about standing and storing the stick vacuum, but their solution turned out to be pretty genius. (See pictures) You can wrap the cord around the hooks, then simply disconnect the main part of the vacuum and slide it into the retaining clip on the front. It's perfectly stable on its own in that configuration. I've found it's easy to do that even while I'm vacuuming and need to empty the dust cup. No need to lean it against the wall and have it fall, or lay it down flat somewhere. You can just slip it into the holder on the front.
Like other Shark vacuums I've had, this one performs really well. The special roller in front of the brush works super well to grab debris that's trying to hide against the walls. The new anti-pet-hair brush seems to work as advertised, too. So, other than the dust cup size I love this stick vacuum. It still deserves a solid 4 stars.

How much range of motion detection does this camera have?

The specs list it at 90'. That may be under ideal conditions, though. In my situation, I think it was more like 75-80'.

Can it be used in regular floors?

Not sure what regular floors are, but maybe hardwood flooring? This works well on that--it has good suction and the wheels are large enough and slightly cushioned so they roll smoothly and quietly on the hardwood. Also works great on carpets and throw rugs. On some of the smaller rugs I reduce the suction a little (thicker carpet setting) to keep from pulling them up.

The innovative Lift-Off Technology boasts a removable canister that lets you easily clean pet hair anywhere. It's also packed with pet cleanup features, like a HEPA Sealed Allergen System, Tangle-Free Brush Roll, One Touch Easy Empty, and pet tools that store right on the vacuum. And this machine doesn't just clean up after pets, it helps save them, too! BISSELL proudly supports BISSELL Pet Foundation and its mission to help save homeless pets. When you buy a BISSELL product, you help save pets, too. We’re proud to design products that help make pet messes, odors and pet homelessness disappear.

Fragrances including Fabreez are filled with chemical compounds that are highly allergenic. Is it possible to get Bissell off the shelf without fragrances allergens in the filters? Defeats the purpose of buying this for allergy sufferers!

While other models came with the optional extra Febreze filter, this one just came out of the box with a regular filter with no scent.

Meet the Logitech Pebble i345. It takes your iPad to higher places with a level of precision and control you can’t get with a tablet alone. Use it to click, scroll, and control your workflow like never before. It’s small, portable, and comfortable—so you can keep exploring, wherever you go.

What difference is there between the Pebble M350, M355, and the most recent i345. As I understand the M350 is the first version, the M355 is the second version, both are compatible with various operating systems including IPadOS, and the i345 only iPadOS

Actually, the i345 is compatible with any device that has BLE (bluetooth low energy) and not just IOS things. I've used the i345 with a PC and also a Chromebook. As far as I can tell, the only difference between the i345 and the M350/M355 is that the i345 doesn't have the USB dongle to use on devices that don't have bluetooth.

I believe it is 6 feet long.

Only at Best BuyMonitor the exterior of your home with this Lorex active deterrence DVR security system. An eight-channel 4K Ultra HD DVR records and plays back crisp, high-quality video, while the remote-triggered siren and bright LED light work to scare off intruders. With color night vision, the cameras included with this Lorex active deterrence DVR security system provide a clear look at your property even in low lighting conditions.

hmm.. NO PoE ? .. does this run on regular old school BnC connections ??? if soooooo..... i have old lorex 720p cameras on BnC right now ... wonder if i can just order cameras and swap out ??? thanks for the help for whoever answers these questions

Yes, it uses BNC connectors so your old cameras should work. However, if you try to use the older cable with the new 4K cameras you'll likely have a very degraded picture if it works at all. I tried it with mine and I could see part of the image, but the bottom half was messed up. When I ran the new cable that came with the 4K camera system, the picture worked perfectly.

Will Best Buy install the system and will it work with existing cameras?

Not sure if Best Buy will install, but you could certainly give them a call. As far as working with existing cameras, I was able to swap out my Swann DVR with this one and still use the old Swann cameras with it. As long as your cameras have a BNC-type connector, you should be okay.

Does this camera have tots of false positive motion alarms? Does it have thermal sensing for motion ?

I haven't noticed any false positives, though it IS very sensitive. So bugs flying near it (day or night) definitely trigger it to record. I think you can adjust the sensitivity, though I haven't played with it. You can also "blank" out areas of the camera view to ignore motion. For example, trees in view of one of my cameras move back and forth when it's windy and constantly trigger the motion. I was able to select the trees in the view and ignore motion there to solve that. I do not believe it uses thermal sensing for motion, but rather changes in the image it sees.
