Perfect for the Kitchen
on November 1, 2018

I’m enjoying my new Google Home Hub. I already have an Insignia Bluetooth speaker with Google Assistant and thought the idea of a Google device with a screen would be useful. I was right and for more reasons than I had thought. It connected easily to my Wi-Fi with the Google Home app which I had on my phone from my other Google device. You use the app to configure your hub.
If you also already have a Google Assistant, you know what it can do. Ask and it will tell you your local weather, the capital of South Dakota or the height of Mt. Everest for example. The screen makes it so much better. I suggested using it in the kitchen because it’s great for getting recipes. Give it a request and the recipe is there on its bright screen. It’ll stay there, and you can find the ingredients and go down the instructions. It will wait for you, no hurry. It’ll play YouTube videos of course too.
I like the way it easily integrates with Google Photos at photos.google.com. At that website you can easily create a photo album with your favorite pictures, then on the Google Home App select that album and bingo, all your photos appear on your Google Home Hub with the interval that you can select. It’s like those old digital photo picture frames but you don’t need digital storage media attached to the device to see them, they’re in the cloud. If you have more than one Hub, you can have each one display the same pictures or select a different album for each. Each picture is displayed with the time and the local outside temperature.
If you’re a subscriber to play.google.com/music it’s really cool. You can just ask the Hub to play any song you can think of, or an entire album. I asked it to play the Tapestry album by Carole King and it played it all the way through. Just talk to it as you’re cooking to hear whatever you are in the mood for.
It’s called a “hub” because it’s the center of your digital home. You can ask it to change the house temperature if you have a Nest thermostat (I didn’t tell my wife it had that feature) or raise or lower the lights or change their colors if those smart devices are included in your home. As an old guy, I can tell you this reminds me of the ‘future’ in the old 20th century sci fi stories, and it’s here now.
It also does NOT have a camera, as the Amazon Echo devices do. I think it’s an advantage as privacy concerns are everywhere now. You can feel comfortable having the device in your bedroom for example. If you want to talk and see the kids, you’ve got plenty of other devices to do that I’m sure.
So for the price, I think you’ll find it a nice addition to a kitchen, den, or bedroom. It’s compact, the sound is decent, although not great, and has much flexibility, with Google adding new features all the time.

The Streamlabs water monitor gives you the peace of mind that your home is protected from water damage. It attaches easily to your existing plumbing, with no pipe cutting required, and uses ultrasonic technology to measure and detect changes in the flow of the water in your pipes. It's Wi-Fi enabled, so you can check on your home anytime, anywhere using the smartphone app. And real-time leak alerts will notify you if you need to take action. The Streamlabs water monitor is also part of your complete smart home, integrating with both Nest and Alexa systems.

A Really Useful Water Monitor
on October 30, 2018
Posted by: AlanD963
from Arlington Heights, IL
The Streamlabs Water Monitor really works, and installation is as easy as they claim. No plumber is needed at all.
The packaging is REALLY classy. It’s like something you’d expect from Apple. The unit is double boxed in heavy cardboard boxes.
First let’s talk about installation. You download the app for your Smartphone. The app then gives simple and complete directions on getting you up and running. First it instructs to power up the device right at your desk and with the app’s help you connect the monitor to your Wi-Fi, which I did with no trouble. It then tells you to take the unit to the pipe where the water enters your home and adhere it with two included plastic tie wraps; don’t worry, they give you two extra in case of a problem. (You do need to connect the device to an electric outlet. I was lucky, mine was about 6 inches from the pipe.) At this point the app then works with the device to identify the pipe’s composition. The last step is making sure you’re not using any water which calibrates the device, so the monitor can sense the pipe with no activity running through it. Now you’re done! By flushing a toilet, you can see the app at work, telling you how much water you’re using and how long. The whole installation process took me less than 20 minutes.
The best way for me to describe the app at this point is that it’s similar to the app for the Nest thermostat. Like the Nest, it shows you a graph by hours in the day and in this case tells you how much water was used for each hour. You can also compare your water usage from what you used yesterday and make comparisons for each day of the month and each month of the year.
But a REAL feature of the app is that it can notify you of unusual water usage which could be a calamity if not checked. The app has defaults for the alerts; how much water would trigger a slow leak alert or a major leak alert. This can be changed by the user. It doesn’t have to be a leak of course. The app will also alert you if, for example, you were watering the lawn and forgot to turn the sprinkler off, or if a grandchild had left the water running in the sink, or a toilet was running continually. It’s just reassuring as you head to bed each night to see that no water is being wasted.
Bottom line, if you think that this monitor would be something that you could use, don’t hesitate to buy it. It does what it says and is easily installed without professional help.

A New Adventure in Cooking
on October 19, 2018
Posted by: AlanD963
from Arlington Heights, IL
Pressure cookers have increased in popularity over the last several years in large part due to celebrity chefs using them on competition shows like Top Chef and Iron Chef and because they significantly cut down on cooking time. I had thought about purchasing a pressure cooker for the last year but didn't want yet another appliance taking up space in my kitchen, however the Ninja Foodi is combination pressure cooker, slow cooker, vegetable steamer, and air crisper.
The Ninja Foodi was packaged well and came with all of the accessories and cooking instructions to get started. I will have to admit that I was a bit intimidated the first time I took everything out of the box as it seemed complicated. After you read the very simple instructions and give your first recipe a try, you will see that it is very easy to use - think slow cooker on steroids.
My first attempt was braised short ribs with root vegetables - one of the recommended recipes that comes in the instruction booklet for first timers. The recipe gave me an opportunity to use the sear/saute feature to brown the short ribs, the pressure cooking feature to cook the short ribs and vegetables in about 40 min,and the bake/roast feature to finish the dish and give everything a nice baked texture at the end. WOW. Incredible. The meat came out restaurant-style tender and the vegetables and sauce were very flavorful.
After the meal was done, cleanup was very easy. The removable cooking pot is non-stick, so cleaning it was as easy as any other non-stock pot or pan you may have in your kitchen already.
Overall, I am very happy with the Ninja Foodi. It is very easy to use, comes with a number of delicious recipes, saves time on busy weeknights, and gets you out of your standard comfort zone of go-to dinner options. Highly recommended.

A different but comfortable feel good mouse
on October 19, 2018
Posted by: AlanD963
from Arlington Heights, IL
I had never tried a “vertical mouse” before, I didn’t know what that even meant. But after using this new MX vertical mouse, I have a new appreciation for the ergonomics behind its design.
I never thought about the fact that when you use a regular mouse, you need to twist your hand from it’s normal resting position. With this vertical mouse, your hand remains in the ‘thumbs up’ position which would be less stressful to your nerves. For anyone with carpal tunnel syndrome using a computer, this would be a godsend. It takes a few minutes to get used to to the button placement, but it’s all about the comfort. The rubbery grip fits your hand perfectly.
It installs just like any other Logitech mouse. I used a Bluetooth wireless connection, the mouse was recognized instantly and connected to my computer. You can also connect it with the included USB cable if you like. I already had the Logitech Options software on my machine from my older mouse. When I opened it, it asked whether I wanted to install another device, and immediately found the vertical mouse. It told me all my options with this mouse, what each button could be made to do. I was pretty happy with the default settings, so I left it alone. The software can also be used to change the ‘speed’ of the mouse for each of two users. Each one can select the speed he or she prefers, and the mouse remembers each one with a press of the button.
Even though I don’t have any “maladies” right now I like using this mouse. It’s comfortable and maybe it will help keep me from getting one.

The "Subscription idea" has many benefits
on October 17, 2018
Posted by: AlanD963
from Arlington Heights, IL
I’ve been a Microsoft Office user for years and at first was unsure of the idea of a ‘subscription’ to Office, but the more I read the details the better it sounded. If you purchased the regular home version of Office 2019 for $149.95 it would be for just one user’s devices, you get just three of the Office apps and of course no upgrades as the years go by and no storage space. The subscription provides SIX Office apps, plus Skype and one Terabyte of storage on OneDrive each for up to SIX different users with upgrades each month included all for $99.99 a year.
I had a chance to use the free Microsoft support feature with my subscription when installing Office 365. I had an issue with my Microsoft account. I opened chat and a VERY helpful agent plowed through all the details with me and got me up and running with efficiency and a sense of humor.
I had been using Microsoft Outlook 2010 on my computer and I was worried that when I upgraded to Office 365 I might lose all my saved emails in the transition. It was a needless worry. I removed Office 2010 which was on my machine (It was a 32-bit version and I installed the 64-bit version of 365 and the two didn’t play well together.) When I first opened my new version of Outlook I thought I was going to have to give it all my Comcast email details but lo and behold, all my emails were right there. It took care of everything behind the scenes.
Bottom line, it seems like a no-brainer to get the ‘subscription 365’ if you’ve been using Microsoft Office all along anyway. If you decide at the end of the year it wasn’t worth it, you could always cancel and go back to the version you’re using now.

The Best Norelco Yet
on October 12, 2018
Posted by: AlanD963
from Arlington Heights, IL
I've been using electric shavers my whole life, both rotary and foil, and the new Prestige beats them all.
The first thing I noticed is how different the shaver feels against my skin, even from older Norelco models. It feels softer, the heads really swivel and follow the curve of my face. I waited for a few days of beard growth so I'd really be able to see how well it worked. It shaved my face like a lawn mower cuts the lawn, It seemed like after one pass the whiskers were gone. In a much shorter time than normal i was finished. I kept checking my magnifying mirror to see if it missed a spot or two but couldn't find one.
This shaver, unlike most "top of the line" models does NOT come with one of those electric cleaning stations. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as with many of them you need to keep buying cleaning cartridges from the manufacturer. With this shaver, when you're finished you just let the water from the faucet pour over it. You then lift the shaving head holder off the shaver and rinse them under the tap. The shaver is now perfectly clean and it didn't cost you a cent. And yes its totally waterproof so if you want to shave in the shower, no problem with shaving cream or not.
The only negative I can mention is that unlike any current shaver I've ever seen the trimmer is not part of the shaver itself. You have to pop off the rotary heads and then click the trimmer attachment onto the shaver. After a few days I realized that it was just easier for me to keep my old shaver handy and if I needed a trim I'd just use its trimmer. It was quicker and worked just as well.
That's really not a big deal. You buy a shaver for its shave quality and this one gets a 10 out of 10.

For Retro Fans Only
on September 24, 2018
Posted by: AlanD963
from Arlington Heights, IL
I really wanted to love this camera. I’m in my 60’s and remember my grandfather showing off his early Polaroid camera, “Imagine, instant pictures you don’t need to take to the developers!”
I showed my young grandkids this camera and they were fascinated; they all wanted to try it. First the good points:
The best feature of this camera is the free smartphone app that comes with it. It’s one of the coolest apps on my phone. It’s really well made, connects effortlessly to the camera via Bluetooth and allows you the ability to do all kinds of tricks with this camera that could never be done with Polaroid cameras in the past. You can use the app to remotely control the camera, using it to fire the shutter, take multiple exposures and act as a remote timer. You can use it to scan your finished print and save it digitally to share with others.
Now the ‘not so good’:
You’ve read the other reviews. The camera did take ‘acceptable’ pictures both color and black and white. The camera works much better in outside lighting. If you take a picture of someone indoors in a normally lit room with the flash, all you’ll see is your subject in a sea of blackness.
The biggest irritation is having to wait a full 15 minutes to see if your picture came out properly. If, after that wait the picture was too light or too dark, you could adjust the three position “lighten/darken” switch to correct that and try again. This wouldn’t be so bad if each picture didn’t cost TWO DOLLARS. Folks today with their digital cameras are accustomed to just deleting a bad picture, you don’t have to wait, you get your storage space back on your memory card and try again. It costs you nothing and you don’t have to wait 15 minutes.
Other thoughts:
This camera uses both color and black and white film which ironically is a novelty today. Like a traditional film camera, you just can’t switch film packs back and forth. If you’ve got the B&W film pack in, you have to take all those pics before you change to color, or else you’ll destroy the pictures left in your camera.
If you don’t want the flash to fire when you take your picture you can hold the “no flash” button as you snap the picture and it will keep it off, otherwise it’s always in ‘on’ mode.
Bottom line to me is that this is a very cool look at analog ‘photography from the past.’ As I said I loved showing my grandkids the camera and what it could do. The problem is the expense of operating it. I loved giving the kids the camera and letting them play with it, trying not to think about the fact that each film pack of 8 pics cost 16 dollars. In a way it’s a great lesson into the reason that digital photography has replaced analog.

A Great Choice in Power Protection
on September 3, 2018
Posted by: AlanD963
from Arlington Heights, IL
APC has always been the first name one thinks of in UPS and this device explains the reason why.
It has 6 power backup and surge protected outlets and 4 others for just surge protection for items like a printer. Also on the front are two USB power ports, (a standard and a “c” port) to keep your phone batteries charged in an outage. There’s coaxial in and out connections to protect your cable modem from any surges. I really like the way its bright digital display is slanted up, so when it’s on the floor you can easily read it from your chair without crawling down on your hands and knees. This display gives you information on in and out voltages, total power you’re consuming in watts, amount of time remaining if you lose power and more.
But most important let’s talk about how the device will keep you running during an outage. I connected everything computer related on my desk to it, desktop computer, 25 inch monitor, cable modem, wireless router and switch, a total of slightly under 100 watts, and then pulled the power. There wasn’t even a ‘blink’ from my monitor. Since I had turned off the audio alarm (a GREAT feature that some UPS systems don’t have) the only hint was the display on the device now indicated that I was running off battery and gave me an approximate time as to how long it would run my system. According to the readout, it would power all my devices for over an hour. If I shut off the computer and monitor so that I’d just have my modem and router operational, I’d have my wireless Internet available for over 4 hours.
You can download free “Power Chute” software and then connect the device to your computer with a provided USB cable so that in a power failure the software should save open files and then shut down your computer safely while unattended before the UPS’ battery runs down. I didn’t try this because I usually don’t run my computer while unattended and the software had many mixed reviews on the Internet. The software is for Windows machines only.
About the only negative I could find with BN1350 is while the display panel is lit up, I detected a slight high pitched whine from the device. As soon as the display went dark, the whine stopped and it was totally silent. This didn’t seem like a problem because in normal mode the display blanks out after 60 seconds (although it’s easy to have it remain on continuously by holding down the display button for two seconds.) Underneath my desk, the whine was barely noticeable anyway.
Overall it seems like a great device for power backup and surge compression. The thing is built like a tank!

Retro Headphones Return, better than ever!
on July 25, 2018
Posted by: AlanD963

These headphones are so cool. Realize they are not “Bose” quality headphones but for under $20 they are amazing and so much fun to wear. My 5 star rating was for the value you receive with these.
They paired up instantly with my Smartphone's Bluetooth and I was on my way. I had forgotten how cool and simple “old style” phones like these are. You just pick them up off the table, snap them over your ears and you’re listening to your music. With the newer ear buds sold today, you need to carefully place them in your ears (after checking “R” and “L” first of course) taking time to make sure they are seated properly for best sound and so they don’t fall out. Totally wireless buds also require a special charging station and maybe a certain charging procedure. Nothing like that with these. Battery life lasts up to 12 hours which is more than most phones today.
They also come with a spare set of ear pads in a different color just in case you want to match these with your outfit.
I guess a negative would be there is no on board volume control. But hey, back in the day with your Walkman headphones there weren’t either, you adjusted the volume on the player, just as you do with these. Also there is only one button, so I had to write down the ‘code’ of how many taps and how long to do each operation such as advancing to the next track or answering or hanging up your phone, but once again, would you be able to do any of these things with your old Walkman headphones!??
Bottom line, for under $20 you really should pop these in your headphone arsenal.

This thing just FLIES!

I saw this drive and thought "OK it's really small, fits easily in a shirt pocket, but why wouldn't I just purchase a regular USB flash drive?"
Well I found out as soon as I started downloading a GB file to it. Before I knew it, the transfer was finished. I've never seen a drive move files this quickly.
If you are a photographer or videographer and need to transfer files to a drive quickly in the field you can't do better than this. As far as reliability goes, everything I've read says that an SSD drive is more reliable than a SATA, and at the sale price of $149.95 I'd jump on it now.

what is expected battery life

If you mean how long will the battery operate before needing a recharge, it's supposed to be about a month
If you mean how long will the battery actually last over time, Google is not saying.

Will the new 'nest' camera show up in the Nest app, or will I have to use two apps (Google home) if I have old Nest cameras?

This camera will ONLY work with the Google "Home" app and will NOT appear on your Nest app.
Google says that you can see all of your cameras on that "Home" app, which is true, but since this app is not available for a PC, you can NOT see this new camera on a computer.

Do the video feeds show up on home.nest.com for the new cameras?

No, for some reason this camera does NOT work with either the Nest app or home.nest.com. You can NOT see the output of the camera on your computer.

Previous reviewers are saying it's not compatible with the Nest App that my current doorbell and outdoor wired camera is on. Is this true? Can I integrate this camera with my Nest App and other cameras?

Unfortunately this camera is NOT compatible with the google Nest app which to me is a huge disappointment.
You have to use the Google "Home" app which does not work with a PC. So you can't even see the camera's output on a PC, which you obviously can with their other cameras.

How long does it take to charge one of these cameras? I would use it primarily overnight so during the day we would charge it whenever the battery is running low. Speaking of low battery, will the app display battery life remaining?

They claim that under normal use the battery should last about a month. Charging from zero to full should take about 5 hours.
And YES, the battery 'meter' is very large and clearly seen in the Google Home App.

No it does NOT!

And I hate that. You can only see this camera on their "Home" app,
This means you can't see the camera on a PC, only on a phone, or tablet, or Google Home device.

I already have a Nest aware subscription. Will these cameras be able to be added to my account?

Yes! The good news about the "Aware" subscription is that it will work with ALL your cameras.
Each time you add a camera, it makes the cost of your subscription per camera go down.
