Effective Humidifier and Easy to Use
on January 26, 2024
Posted by: AlanD963
I haven’t used a humidifier in my house for years. The ones mounted on the furnace required much maintenance, and the portable units were difficult to fill and required constant filter replacements.
I thought I’d give the Levoit 6000S a shot and I’m glad I did.
First, it’s really easy to fill. It uses regular tap water and is on rollers so it rolls right up to the sink. Included is a rubber hose with a ‘faucet gripper’ end which grabs and holds onto the sink faucet so you don’t have to hold it there.
Of course, like most everything today it’s wi-fi capable and the app makes it so easy to use. You can set the unit a number of ways. You can set the target humidity level, set the speed of the fan if you’re not happy with the self-setting. You can set a sleep mode which will keep the fan low at bedtime or turn it off altogether. There’ s a “Dry Mode” which will extend the life of the wick filters. All these features can be controlled by the app. Of course, if the unit runs out of water, it turns itself off. I was delighted to see the filters are easily removed and WASHABLE, so they don’t need constant replacement.
Most importantly, I found the unit humidifies the house very efficiently. It arrived during a cold spell in Chicago, so I could actually see how effective it was. I’m a ‘weather geek’ so I have several humidity indicators around the house. In just a few minutes the humidity in my room started rising, and not long after I saw the humidity in other rooms in the house showed an increase as well. The only negative I could find to talk about, is that the clear ‘tube window’ at the front of the unit which shows the remaining water in the tank is very hard to use. The problem is since the water you put in the unit is clear, I needed the light on my phone shining in the window to see the water level. Since that’s not the fault of the humidifier, I really can’t blame Levoit, lol.
Bottom line, if you want a well-made, easy to clean, use and operate device to help humidify your home, I think you’ll be happy with the Superior 6000S.

A Bird Watcher's Fantasy
on November 7, 2023
Posted by: AlanD963
If you enjoy watching birds, maybe have a feeder already, but wish you could get a closer look at the birds at your feeder, you will LOVE this one.
Once set up, you just place it:
1) Anywhere where Wi-Fi is available.
2) Where sun can hit the roof to keep the battery charged
3) A location where squirrels can’t easily get to it
It was so cool, when after setup the feeder started sending ‘postcards’ to the Bird Buddy app on my phone, with several different views of each bird and even a short video of my dining visitor.
The AI feature correctly identified the bird on the ‘postcard.’ It also identified the “squirrels’ which invaded the feeder at my first test location. It would send postcards with the furry creature all close up. which I immediately deleted. I then found a less ‘squirrely’ location.
Set up however was definitely not intuitive. You need to have a Bluetooth connection to the device and your phone, just for set-up, after that, your Wi-Fi will take over.
The instructions tell you to watch the color of the indicator light on the camera as you were setting it up. Not only was the light very difficult to see, but the colors of the light never matched the colors that I was supposed to be seeing. They don’t offer any immediate assistance, so I spent an hour or so, looking at different YouTube videos other users have created and just did some plain trial and error experimenting and suddenly everything started working. You first charge the unit fully with a standard USB-C connection, put the camera in the feeder, fill it with bird seed, and you are off and running.
At first I was going to downgrade a star on my review for the frustration I was getting setting up my Bird Buddy, but the fun I was having seeing the birds close up on my phone made it all worth it, so the star came back
You can not only see ‘postcards’ from your feeder, but also beautiful pictures from other feeders around the world in real time. It’s a little ‘community.’ If you sign up for “pro” membership you’ll have access to more feeders.
As far as the effectiveness of the solar roof, I’ve had the unit up and running for a couple of days, and the unit’s battery has remained at 94 per cent the whole time so it seems to be working just fine. If I get a string of cloudy days, the camera just pops out of the feeder (it’s held in with a magnet) and would be easily charged up inside.
The feeder will continue to send “postcards” to you for free as long as you own the feeder. For $3 a month or $30 a year for the “pro” features, you get higher res pictures, more connection to other feeders, you can let more family members and friends see your feeder pictures, (without membership you are limited to three other people) and your feeder will start sending you more postcards, with the risk of higher battery usage, but with the solar roof, that shouldn’t be too much of a problem
Bottom line, after finally getting it set up, I love my Bird Buddy feeder, and always look forward to seeing more ‘postcards’ and AI identification of close up views of my feeder visitors. I think any backyard bird enthusiast would really enjoy this thing.

The "AI" Champion
on October 14, 2023
Posted by: AlanD963
I received my unlocked Pixel 8 Pro this week and I have not been disappointed.
It’s always worrisome to me setting up a new phone for the first time and transferring all my data and phone number, especially when I’m doing it by myself. I needn’t have worried. EVERYTHING transferred perfectly from my old Pixel without even connecting a cable. Following the easy instructions, the new phone received all my information, including wi-fi credentials from my old phone. It then transferred my carrier account and phone number, I didn’t even have to remove the SIM card from my old phone. Literally in five minutes I was ready to go, and I just watched as each of my apps transferred perfectly to my new Pixel 8 Pro. The only thing which did not transfer was my username and password to each website. That was a minor inconvenience. The phone did the ‘heavy lifting’ all by itself.
Now, getting to the phone itself. By far the biggest new feature of this Pixel are all of its “AI” capabilities. With the camera, the Magic Eraser is smarter than ever but now there’s an AUDIO Magic Eraser, so that if your videos have irritating and distractive background noise, the AI will reduce or eliminate it. There’s also a new “Magic Editor” which can actually move the subject of your photo around the background and do other tricks with your photos. It was pretty amazing. The telephoto capability of the phone is very useful, even if you don’t want to take a picture. For instance, if you want to read a sign in the distance you can’t make out, the camera will bring it up close to you. In the opposite direction the macro feature is unbelievable this year. I had my phone less than an INCH from a subject and it was sharp and clear. Also back this year is the photo “unblur” and “night sight” and astrophotography. Get yourself a tripod or prop up the camera, and it will be as if you’re at the planetarium.
Another AI feature is the ‘summarize’ capability. You can open a web page and ask the phone to summarize what’s on the page and it DOES in its own words. I can’t imagine being too lazy to just read the article for myself, but the feature is THERE if you want it. The phone will also take a web page written in a foreign language and translate it for you, both in text and voice.
A few features offered I didn’t have a chance to try. Getting back to AI, if you have it set up, the phone will screen your calls, even ask QUESTIONS to the callers before it rings the phone.
Oh, and I almost forgot the temperature sensor. You can take the temperature of an object by scanning it, such as liquid temperature, a cooking pan etc. And no, you can’t take a PERSON’s temperature with it yet, but when approval comes from the U.S. Food and Drug administration, Google says it will turn it on.
This year Google is offering a industry leading SEVEN YEARS of security support and OS upgrades. So for seven years, if there’s a new version of Android, you’ve got it free. I don’t think Apple is going to match that.
OK, here’s my thought as to whether it’s worth upgrading to the Pixel 8 Pro. Especially if you’ve got a Pixel 7 Pro and are happy with it, if you don’t think you’ll use any of the AI and new camera features, you’re probably fine with the one you have. The new screen is supposed to be brighter, but it wasn’t noticeable to me. I suppose if I turned the brightness all the way up, there would be a difference. The battery is supposed to be longer lasting too, but I never really had a problem with my old Pixel’s battery. But if you think you’ll have fun playing with all the new AI features the new phone has, and I’m sure I missed a few of the new ones, then upgrade away.

Great superfast device. Low price.

This Western DIgital Easystore drive offers at very low-price, high-speed transfer and storage of your files.
I was happily surprised when storing a Windows directory of files on my Easystore, I had a transfer rate of 347 Mb/s. I’d never seen my computer exchange files so quickly to a device. The specifications for the drive indicate it has a speed of up to 5 Gbp/s but I guess my computer doesn’t support anything near that. I’m more than happy with the speed I achieved .
The drive comes with backup software included, which I didn’t set up. I just use it to store some pictures and audio files, and it did the job beautifully and as I say quickly.
Included is the short cord which connects the drive to your device with a USB-A plug on the end.
Also included is a tiny instruction manual in several different languages. I believe you’d need an electron microscope to read anything on it, lol, but you most likely wouldn’t need the manual to operate the drive. It's pre-formulated for NTFS. You might need to reformat it for macOS.
The bottom line is for a low price you have a very small, lightweight, high speed device to safely store your files. If you’re looking for a device for that purpose, I think you’d the happy with the Easystore.

Well made cable. No need to pay more.
on October 7, 2023
Posted by: AlanD963
Very good low cost braided USB-C to USB-C cable. Well made and works perfectly, making sure you take full advantage of the newer higher wattage USB charging blocks. The cable is rated for up to a 60 watt block and also gives you a 480 mbps. transfer capability.
You can feel the quality right out of the box. The cable is braided and comes with a rubber strip to keep the cable folded neatly in your bag until needed. The plugs have a rubber tip at the ends which should minimize any chances of the plug weakening with constant plugging and unplugging of your equipment. Also, a note on the box indicates the cable should withstand up to fifteen thousand bends. Granted I did not sit there and test it by bending it fifteen thousand times, but I believe it to be true, lol.
The bottom line here is there's absolutely no need to spend more for a charging cable. This Best Buy Insignia brand cable will work as well as any more expensive brand name cable you can buy. You might as well keep that money in your own pocket.

Great for walks or jogging.
on September 1, 2023
Posted by: AlanD963
These audio sunglasses are fine for listening to music while walking or jogging or gardening. The glasses fit very snugly, so especially if you’ve had problems with regular ear buds falling out of your ears, that problem is gone. The polarized lenses are excellent, I could see no distortion, in fact it’s probably the best feature of these glasses.
The audio quality, however, is just fair. There’s absolutely no bass. Your music will be very clear however, the stereo separation is amazing, with most tunes the singer totally comes from the middle of your head, and for jogging or walking outside, the ambient noise from the street is not muzzled so that’s great for safety.
Connection to Bluetooth is the easiest I’ve ever seen on any device. You just turn on the glasses for the first time, you’ll see “Lucyd” when your phone looks for new Bluetooth sources, just tap that and you’re connected. All done.
You just have to be careful to never lose the charging cord, as it’s made especially for these glasses, you’ll need it to connect each temple individually to the charging cord.
Bottom line, these glasses are really well made. A heavy duty case is included to protect them, they come with a polishing cloth and an A/C adapter for the USB cord (which is not found often on devices these days. I think you’ll enjoy them, just realize that it won’t be the main source you’ll use to listen to your music, but for just walking outside or sitting listening to your music, you should be fine.

A Great Idea, but - - - - -
on June 10, 2023
Posted by: AlanD963
My capsule comment:
I think the only reason you’d want to purchase this watch is if you don’t like wearing a normal smartwatch because you feel too ‘geek-like’ wearing a plastic watch which is more like a computer. In this case, this watch which is a beautiful looking timepiece would be perfect for you.
I really wanted to love this watch. It seemed like such a great idea. A smartwatch with actual mechanical hands, and then beneath them you’d get the typical info you get from other smartwatches. And as a bonus its battery lasts for over two weeks, instead of the two-day maximum with most other smartwatches.
The first problem was the readability of messages in the watch. The text is tiny. If you’re over the age of 40, I don’t think you’d be able to read anything the watch tried to tell you without glasses. And of course, to save the battery life, you need quite a bit of ambient light to read anything. The watch does have a little backlight however. You tap the watch face two times to turn it on for about three seconds. You’ll find you’ll be doing a lot of tapping during a typical day. The hands on the watch are supposed to be luminous, but the luminescence was totally gone long before my bedtime, even if I left the watch sitting in bright sunlight all day. So, if you wake up and want to read the time at 3 AM, prepare to do a lot of tapping, and speaking of tapping, there is no touchscreen on this watch, tapping to turn the backlight on is all that you can do.
As with most smartwatches today, the watch came with no instructions, aside from the one which told you how to pair it to your watch. Look online for the Citizen YF-30 manual.
Bottom line, as I said at the beginning, this is probably the most beautiful smartwatch available today. Perhaps it would be a watch you’d wear on more formal occasions. I just don’t think it would be one that you’d want to use as your only smartwatch.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

You'll Love This Machine
on April 17, 2023
Posted by: AlanD963
The Greenworks Pro is our third electric pressure washer and if you’ll pardon the expression, it leaves the others in the dust.
Assembly is surprisingly easy. You’ll just need a Phillips screwdriver. All the difficult parts are preassembled. The engine and large wheels are attached already, you just attach the handle, nozzle holder panel, and the holders for the hose, spray gun, and the power cord. The different size screws are in the bag with each attachment, so you can’t go wrong. You’re now ready to go.
Just one important rule. You need to run the water through the hose and nozzle before turning on the power to make sure all the air is out. You don’t want to ever turn on the power without a solid stream of water available. You’re then ready to clean. It comes with five different nozzle attachments, three with different fan width tips, one soap spray tip and a turbo tip when you’re really serious about cleaning. The Greenworks Pro was powerful enough to clean most of the dirt off our sidewalk with even the widest, lowest pressure tip, but you’ll know if you need more power the other tips are available, you just remove the old tip and pop on the new one, it takes less than 10 seconds.
I love the design of the unit. In normal use, it sits horizontally on the ground, but you can store it vertically if you have limited space in your garage as I do. Rolling it away is very easy with its big wheels. Another advantage over our older electric pressure washers is its hose is much more flexible than the others. It was more difficult to coil up those hoses on those machines.
About the only negative I could find at first use, is the port for your garden hose is in a tight space between the metal stand and the wheels. It wasn’t bad connecting the hose for the first use but when putting everything away it was more difficult to get leverage to remove the hose after a day of cleaning. The hose tends to take more effort to remove after use.
Bottom line though, I love this unit. I’ve never had a gas powered washer but from what I hear, the only reason people purchased a gas unit is they needed more power, and at 3000 PSI, for home use, this is most likely all you’ll need.

Great Price for a Good Shaver
on February 3, 2023
Posted by: AlanD963
The Norelco 5400 is a very good basic shaver from Philips. It has many of the features of the more expensive models at a very good price.
It’s a total wet/dry shaver. You can use it in the shower or bathtub, with shaving foam or gel or nothing. You can experiment to see what works best for you.
The pop-up trimmer is right there for your use. The shaver is cleaned by just running warm water over the shaving heads, then press the release button to expose the hair chamber, run water over that and you’re done.
This is the first Norelco shaver I’ve seen that uses a USB cable to charge the battery. The battery fully charged in less than an hour, then you get an hour of total shaving time before it needs to be charged again. The three element display lets you know the state of the battery in the shaver.
Included is a plastic cap to protect the rotary blades when travelling. It also features a ‘travel lock’ which protects the shaver from accidentally turning itself on in your luggage. It features a two-year warranty AND a 45-day money back guarantee. If you’ve used the shaver for that time and our still not happy with the shaver, you can send it back to Philips with your receipt and they’ll refund your money.
Bottom line, it’s a very reasonably priced shaver which matches the more expensive models in many ways. I compared the shave against a much more expensive Norelco and really couldn’t see or feel the difference. With the 45-day guarantee that they offer, it’s hard to see how you could go wrong.

ZOOOM !!!!
on December 3, 2022
Posted by: AlanD963
My grandson’s face lit up when I gave him this scooter.
Anyhill has been around for awhile making quality scooters for adults, and they just came out with this economical one designed for kids. It’s lightweight, just 16 pounds and folds for easy carrying and storing.
You can set it for three different maximum speeds for your child, 4, 6 or 9 mph. Just push with your foot to get it started and you’re on your way. Totally silent.
It was easy to assemble; it comes with all the tools you’ll need. Just push the handlebar stem down over the larger bolt, then tighten it and the other two bolts. Everything else is already assembled. Attach the charger until it lights up green and it's ready to go. You’ll always know how much life you have in your battery, there’s a bright light on the side of the scooter. When its green you’ve got at least 50 per cent battery life, orange is over 20 and red is less than that. I noticed after several minutes when not in use, the scooter turns itself off, which is good because kids are likely to forget to do that.
All in all, this is a well-built electric rechargeable scooter that kids should really enjoy. As a parent or grandparent, just make sure they always are wearing a helmet and knee pads would be a great idea too.

If you mean how long will the battery operate before needing a recharge, it's supposed to be about a month
If you mean how long will the battery actually last over time, Google is not saying.

Will the new 'nest' camera show up in the Nest app, or will I have to use two apps (Google home) if I have old Nest cameras?

This camera will ONLY work with the Google "Home" app and will NOT appear on your Nest app.
Google says that you can see all of your cameras on that "Home" app, which is true, but since this app is not available for a PC, you can NOT see this new camera on a computer.

Do the video feeds show up on home.nest.com for the new cameras?

No, for some reason this camera does NOT work with either the Nest app or home.nest.com. You can NOT see the output of the camera on your computer.

Previous reviewers are saying it's not compatible with the Nest App that my current doorbell and outdoor wired camera is on. Is this true? Can I integrate this camera with my Nest App and other cameras?

Unfortunately this camera is NOT compatible with the google Nest app which to me is a huge disappointment.
You have to use the Google "Home" app which does not work with a PC. So you can't even see the camera's output on a PC, which you obviously can with their other cameras.

How long does it take to charge one of these cameras? I would use it primarily overnight so during the day we would charge it whenever the battery is running low. Speaking of low battery, will the app display battery life remaining?

They claim that under normal use the battery should last about a month. Charging from zero to full should take about 5 hours.
And YES, the battery 'meter' is very large and clearly seen in the Google Home App.

No it does NOT!

And I hate that. You can only see this camera on their "Home" app,
This means you can't see the camera on a PC, only on a phone, or tablet, or Google Home device.

I already have a Nest aware subscription. Will these cameras be able to be added to my account?

Yes! The good news about the "Aware" subscription is that it will work with ALL your cameras.
Each time you add a camera, it makes the cost of your subscription per camera go down.

Just below the silver sticker on the bottom of the unit is the battery door. Just pull down on that 'lip' and the battery door will pop off and open.
