Not DIY with my wiring; app needs improvement

The wiring in my home was a rat’s nest of aluminum. One of the terminals on the switch I was intending to replace was connected to a cluster of red, white, and black wires. This was not a job for an amateur. I needed a professional electrician to decipher the cluster of spaghetti behind my switch plate. If you intend to make this a DIY project, make sure that you understand the wiring that you need to use and don’t assume that someone else’s work was correct (even if it works).

The app was easy to install, but the dimmer configuration stalled during the step where my home network was searching for WeMo devices. I had to reset the device to its factory settings, turn off the cellular data setting on my phone, connect to my wireless network, and start the configuration from scratch. The device occupies a slot on the 2.4GHz band of my home network, which is fine for a stationary device with no real demand for band width.
The serial number and MAC address for the switch is on the package. You may need a magnifying glass to read it. Make sure to save this information. You won’t want to remove the switch to get this information (I’m not even sure that it is there).
Functionality:
We are using the WeMo switch to allow us to turn on the front porch light remotely. Many of the features (e.g. dimming, countdown timer, fade-out, and “night mode”) turned out to be unnecessary.

The scheduler is OK, but there does not appear to be a feature to add a day-to-day random offset to the on/off times to make it appear that someone is home. This shortcoming could easily be added to the app.
The dimmer panel on the switch is not a slider. A single touch at any point on the scale will set the dimmer level.

Cleans well, but it's very noisy

Disclaimer: My home is in the middle of a remodel and I have not had the opportunity to test the unit on indoor carpet.
The unit was easy to assembly. There is a handy mesh bag for storing the tools and hose. This model does not come with a hard floor attachment. And, despite the fact that one is pictured in the User’s Manual, Bissell does not yet offer a hard floor attachment for this model. There are several hard floor attachments advertised on the Bissell web site, but none are compatible with this model (1986). This was a real disappointment for me since the first task I had planned for this unit was to clean “mud” and drywall dust from the hardwood floor in our partially remodeled den.
I have had a chance to test the unit on the floor mats and cargo area of my car. The ”deep stain tool” did a great job on both areas and the cleaning solution removed some stains that I thought were permanent. Moving slowly over the wet areas will pick up more dirty water and leave the mats almost dry enough to use.
I hope to give this product a more thorough test and update this review once the protective plastic comes off my carpet.
As a caution, don’t fill the clean water reservoir while it is sitting on a counter. This will depress the release valve on the bottom of the reservoir and your counter will get wet. Good mike, lousy audio

Up front… I am not a gamer. I use the Kraken Pro V2 as a communications headset and for speech recognition. The microphone is quite good in both applications. The ear pads are comfortable, but get hot after a few minutes of wearing. The headphones, while well-built and comfortable, are very bass-forward with almost no treble. This makes voices and music muddy sounding. With the open-back design, there is no sound isolation. This is a good thing if you want to hear the world around you, but it means that you might need to turn the volume up to immerse yourself in whatever you are listening to. There is significant crossover between channels. If there is also a delay applied to the opposite channel, this might provide a more realistic binaural experience when listening to 2-channel stereo. However, this same feature would decrease the clarity of 1-channel (i.e. mono) input, like the microphone used on this and many other communication and gaming headsets.
The headset cable is 4 feet long, kink-free, and covered in a braided fabric. There is an inline volume control and a mute switch for the microphone. It is terminated with a 3.5mm TRRS connector that allows stereo listening and mono microphone input. The included splitter cable gives you the option to plug into separate speaker and microphone jacks. These jacks must be less than 6-inches apart or the cable will not connect to both. The extension/splitter cable is also waaaaaay too long (6 feet). Razer would have done better to supply a longer primary cable and a shorter splitter cable.

Great design and function (after setup problems)

There was a lot of effort put into the design and packaging of the Velop. Nodes are small and attractive enough to fit unobtrusively in any room in my home. The recessed bottom of the housing and cutout to accommodate power and Ethernet cables are nice features. Even the packaging was first rate with a ribbon tab and magnetic closures. I’ll have to think of some use for the box now that the system was set up.
Setup of the parent node and first child were a breeze with the Linksys app. The second child node struggled during the “Checking your node’s location” phase and refused to synch with the other nodes. I had to perform a manual software update on the problem child and make it the parent (with LOTS of intervening resets and power cycles on both nodes) before everything finally worked as intended. Once operational, the network provided excellent WiFi coverage and speed. You might want to consider setting up your network in a limited area and then moving the “children” to their final positions when network setup is complete. The app will tell you that you could get better coverage by moving nodes away from the parent, but mine reconnected without problems after relocation.
The Velop is decidedly WiFi-centric. There are two RJ45 connections at the bottom of each node, but the only truly wired connectivity is on the parent node and one of these two ports is occupied by the Ethernet connection to my cable modem. All of the wired devices on my network had to be accommodated by connecting a network switch to the second port on the parent node.
I was disappointed to learn that I could not manage the Velop using a web-based user interface from my computer. Setup and management are only possible through the Linksys app running on an iOS or Android smart phone. I am not facile “typing” with my thumbs and configuration of my Velop network was cumbersome and time-consuming. Most of the functionality of a web-based UI is available in the app, including parental controls, guest access, device prioritization, reserved addresses, customized device names, and some additional features that are only meaningful in the context of a mesh network (e.g. which node is a device connected through). One problem with the app-only management is the noticeable lag between connecting a new device and its appearance as a connected device in the app. Some of my wireless devices are also miss-labeled as having a wired connection. Since it is managing the connection to each device, it should be easy to determine how a device is connected to the router and assign the proper label, but this was also a problem with the web-based UI for my previous Linksys routers.
Overall, Velop offers excellent WiFi connectivity and coverage once you get past the setup and configuration phases. For me, the excellence in design and function are somewhat shadowed by the difficult setup, the lack of a web-based UI, and the cumbersome app-based configuration.

Truly wireless security cameras

The package includes 2 cameras (with 2 rechargeable batteries, 1 power adapter, and 1 USB cable) and a base unit (with 1 power adapter and 1 Ethernet cable). Additional cameras are available. One camera was loose in my package on arrival as the screw holding it in place was broken. The camera was undamaged. Unscrewing the other camera from the packaging was cumbersome for my large hand.
Setup was simple with smartphone app. I had to try twice to synchronize the second camera with the base unit. Cameras can be given individual names for easy reference. Three video quality modes are available and can be varied for each camera separately. Zooming and panning are possible, but these are digital features only (i.e. zoomed images are cropped). Panning is only possible when zoom is active. The camera has no optical zoom or mechanical panning capabilities. You are better off capturing the entire 130-degree image and cropping after video is recorded.
Registration included the “suggestion” for subscription service. Free “Basic” service includes 7 days of video “memories” in cloud (up to 1 GB), up to 5 cameras, and 3 months of support. Premier service (“Most Popular”?) includes 30 days of video (up to 10GB), up to 10 cameras, and unlimited support. Elite service includes 60 days of video (up to 100GB), up to 15 cameras, and unlimited support. With 2 cameras in the kit, I chose the free basic service.
WiFi connectivity between cameras and base unit is impressive. I have my cameras placed 25 to 30 feet away from the base unit with 2 interior walls and 1 exterior wall between and the signal strength (according to the app) is very good. These cameras are truly wireless.
Magnetic mounts are effective, but must be located out of reach when placed outside to prevent theft as the cameras are easily removed from the mount. Cameras can also be place on a flat surface without a mount. Alternative mounting options are available separately.
Video and audio recordings must be stored on the Arlo cloud. This has advantages and disadvantages. Advantages: 1) facilitates remote access via smartphone app when beyond the range of your local WiFi signal; 2) no local storage medium is required. Disadvantages: 1) “Live” video (and audio) is delayed by a couple of seconds; 2) You need to trust that the Arlo cloud is reliable, private, and secure. The Arlo terms of service suggests that they are not responsible for uploaded “content”. There are two USB ports on the base unit for local storage, but this is in addition to (not instead of) cloud storage.
Video and audio recording (and other actions) on individual cameras can be triggered by motion or audio or both. The length of recording can be adjusted from 10 to 120 seconds. The trigger can also activate an alarm, send email, and/or notifications in-app. The alarm is VERY loud and comes from the base unit, not the cameras.
Unlike security service providers, video and audio are not monitored and you are entirely responsible for alerting authorities in the event of emergencies.
Be prepared to receive LOTS of emails and in-app notifications and, likely, a bump in your cell phone data usage if you use your smart phone to watch video. The sensitivity of motion detection can be adjusted separately for each camera. The default setting (“80%”) is quite sensitive and can be triggered by reflection from windows. Each camera can be turned off manually. The system can also be turned on and off and can be scheduled to come on at specific times for each day of the week. There is a built-in infrared (IR) light source that allows black/white “night vision”. In IR mode, near objects and reflective surfaces are very bright. The two-way audio feature is nice, but output volume is not very loud and the camera will have to be relatively close to the person with whom you are talking. Also be aware that there is a significant lag in the two-way audio making conversation difficult. Some browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer) do not support the push-to-talk feature required for two-way audio.
Rechargeable batteries are advertised to last 3 to 6 months in “regular use”. Extra batteries can be purchased. If you do not purchased the optional charging station, batteries must be charged (indoors) in the camera.

Perfect head for perfect toothbrush

I recently upgraded from an older model electronic toothbrush. The smaller base and slimmer, lighter handle, and smaller brush base are a big improvement. The brush head is the right size for my mouth and the bristles have the perfect stiffness to reach between teeth without being rough on the gums. My only regret is that I won't be able to scavenge magnets from the new heads ;-)

There is a small plastic frame for the charging base that accommodates two spare brush heads. Brush heads are easy to put on and take off for cleaning. There are three brushing modes (clean, white, and deep clean) and three intensity levels within each mode. This seems like overkill to me, but you are sure to find a combination that meets your needs. The brush signals you every 20 seconds to encourage you to move to another area of your mouth. The brush will also let you know if you are putting too much pressure on the brush head. This feature is good for those new to electronic brushes and helps prevent unintended gum damage.

When you first launch the app, you are asked to give some details about your brushing habits. Mine were not in the list of options. The software does well when you follow the suggested pattern (start top-right and finish bottom-right). However, it doesn’t adapt well to a different brushing pattern and gets confused if you don’t follow the suggested pattern on the screen. You will be prompted to go back over area it thinks you neglected. There are also reference to “scraping” which were not part of my vocabulary. There is apparently a rubber brush head called a “tongue scrapper” intended to keep your tongue clean and breath fresh. I use a manual toothbrush for this purpose (TMI?).

Great software... not much of an update

Installation was quick and easy. The software came as a CD, but the license key worked just fine with the downloaded version.
I have been using Photoshop Elements (PSE) since version 9.0. It is an integral (albeit occasional) part of my photo-editing work flow. I use Light Room for raw image conversion and PSE to clean up unwanted artifacts and perform more elaborate image processing. I most commonly use the “content aware” healing brush. This is an amazing tool for getting rid of unwanted objects in your images.
I do not normally use the PSE organizer, but I tried it in PSE15 and may use it going forward, primarily for facial recognition. Importing and detecting faces on 18,000 photos took a loooooong time. It was OK at detecting faces when they were not profiles and the subject was not wearing a hat. I still had to put a name to each face. It did OK associating similar faces with the correct names once they had been entered for another good front-on photo. However, the process still requires manual confirmation. I have not figured out how to use “smart tags”. My guess is that it is something like keyword suggestions in Light Room (and facial recognition in PSE15)… once you start adding tags, PSE15 is smart enough to suggest them again for similar images.
There are a few new filters in v15, but they are mostly cosmetic (e.g. using a photo as input to text, collage processing, and some new frames). The most interesting new tool is “Adjust Facial Features” (in the Enhance menu). It might work better with young faces, but it was not very convincing with older ones in my catalog.
There are a few new guided edits that newer users may find handy. Most have been available in “Expert” mode for a while.
Bottom line… I would not recommend it for the experienced user of PSE14 (PSE15 doesn’t offer much in the way of an upgrade). I can heartily recommend it for new users. PSE is very useful and a great tool for image manipulation.

Plenty of reach and easy setup & management

Very easy setup and update. The WRT3200 provides good signal strength throughout my 2,100 ft^2 split-level home. The power switch in back is handy for hard cycling, but there is not much room for my fat finger between the antenna and power cord. There are 4 RJ45 jacks for wired network connections and 2 USB ports (one eSATA and the other USB3). I really like the iPhone app for managing the unit. I can turn on parental controls whenever necessary from anywhere. I did not test the bridge or repeater functionality.

Very good corded vacuum

Maneuverability: relatively narrow head takes more passes than typical upright, but it works well around (and under) furniture and is just the right width for standard stair treads. However, on stair treads, the motor head is a bit unwieldy when attached with the wand.
Cord: About 1.5 rooms worth of cord. It needs to be unplugged and plugged in frequently. This is the most notable flaw in the design.
Canister: small size helps with weight, but needs to be emptied frequently. It is easy to empty either attached or detached from the body.
Filters: three replaceable filters (2 before and 1 after the canister) can be removed and washed. Shark recommends that this be done monthly. Replacement filters are available on the Shark web site.
Light: LED headlight is a nice feature, but you still need to get on your hands and knees to look under furniture. There is also a status light on the motor head to indicate when the unit is not operating properly.
Tools: the unit came with pet multi-tool, duster-crevice tool, upholstery tool, extendable under-appliance wand, on-board storage clip (holds 2 small tools on the wand), wall mount, and accessory bag. The pet multi-tool is just an upholstery tool with a detachable brush. The under-appliance wand is OK for appliances that can’t be moved (e.g. dishwasher) or for those who can’t (or don’t want too) move appliances and furniture to clean under them. The duster-crevice tool is handy as it allows you to carry one attachment with you while vacuuming rather than two.
Motor: Two-speed motor recommended for bare floors and area rugs (low) and high-pile carpet (high). Low speed seems to work for our low-pile carpet.
Two-roller Motor Head: This is a really nice feature! It is very efficient at picking up dirt on bare floors. This is the best design feature of the vacuum.
User comments: Wife… I like the maneuverability of the motor head. Son… This thing really sucks! (in a good way ;-). Me… It won’t replace our cordless stick vacuum, but it will be used more frequently than the full-sized upright.
If the option had been available, I'd have given it a 4.5 out of 5.

I had to return an older model that was damaged in shipment. This one is perfect as a shelf-top microwave. It has plenty of power. The interface is not conventional, but it is easy to use and has almost all of the features of its larger cousins. There is no temperature probe and no numeric key pad to enter time. Unless you need a larger size, there is no reason to look for anything else.
The only down side is the "tune" that it plays when starting and stopping. A simple tone would have sufficed.

Review for the wrong microwave

Disclaimer: My home is in the middle of a remodel and I have not had the opportunity to test the unit on indoor carpet.
The unit was easy to assembly. There is a handy mesh bag for storing the tools and hose. This model does not come with a hard floor attachment. And, despite the fact that one is pictured in the User’s Manual, Bissell does not yet offer a hard floor attachment for this model. There are several hard floor attachments advertised on the Bissell web site, but none are compatible with this model (1986). This was a real disappointment for me since the first task I had planned for this unit was to clean “mud” and drywall dust from the hardwood floor in our partially remodeled den.
I have had a chance to test the unit on the floor mats and cargo area of my car. The ”deep stain tool” did a great job on both areas and the cleaning solution removed some stains that I thought were permanent. Moving slowly over the wet areas will pick up more dirty water and leave the mats almost dry enough to use.
I hope to give this product a more thorough test and update this review once the protective plastic comes off my carpet.
As a caution, don’t fill the clean water reservoir while it is sitting on a counter. This will depress the release valve on the bottom of the reservoir and your counter will get wet. If you are expecting quiet, this Bissell unit is anything but. I would seriously consider hearing protection if you intend to use it in an small enclosed area. It’s Noisy!

After our renovation the Bissell got a real workout. The gunk that it got out of a freshly vacuumed carpet was amazing! Better than that, this Bissell was designed to be cleaned easily and completely. No more funky mess to fester in the machine between uses. They also now offer a bare floor attachment (not available at the time of my initial). Sorry for the initial 4-star rating. This machine is 5+ all the way!

HDR is enabled under the "SuperPhoto" option. It is not supported (or necessary) when shooting in RAW format.

Does this boost WiFi and cell phone service?

Can you copy on photo paper. From a camera?
I would not recommend this printer for printing photos. Color calibration must be done manually and only laser printer stock is recommended. There is glossy brochure paper that you could use, but most photo paper is intended for use in ink-jet printer and is not intended to withstand the heat of laser printing.

No. This printer will not perform duplex printing or scanning.

Does it have HDR?
There is an option to engage HDR for photos (and perhaps video). The Tab S6 will decode video up to 8K, but so far as I can tell, the 2560 x 1600 (WQXGA) display is not HDR capable with regard to video streaming/playback.

Does it have a headphone jack ? I must have a headphone jack. Wireless sound is not as good quality.
There is no headphone jack on the Tab S6. I suggest a USB(C) headphone adapter or DAC/AMP if you are not satisfied with the sound quality using Bluetooth 5.0.

The charger is dual voltage (9.0v @ 1.67A and 5.0v @ 2.0A). The 9.0v x 1.67A = 15.03 watts.

Is this device GPS enabled like the S4?
Yes. Location services use a combination of GPS, wireless network, and Wi-Fi data. Photos can be tagged with GPS EXIF data.
