Impressive Mesh System!
on June 23, 2022
Posted by: bobcats9498
I've been looking to upgrade my mesh wifi system as my current system just wasn't fast anymore. I was skeptical with the Deco AX4300, but boy was I wrong. This thing screams fast.
I have a 3500 square foot two-story home which makes wifi not work so well getting to every corner of the house. My previous mesh network system had 5 units and would still not catch every room well. So you can see why I wasn't thinking this Deco system would do any better.
Setup was super simple. Plug in one of the units into your router using ethernet and plug into a wall outlet (I do wish the power brick was smaller - it is huge!). Download the Deco app and follow the instructions. Within a few minutes, your Main Deco is up and running). The app helps you as you place the other two units to ensure the best coverage in your house. Those are just as simple to setup. Plug in, add in app, and done. Do note that an update may download in the app to ensure you are running the latest firmware.
For advanced users, you can get deep into settings to setup port forwarding, address reservations, IPv6, etc. The app is pretty intuitive to use for advanced setups. You can also easily setup a guest network. The one thing that is missing from the app (or I can't find it), is a speed test from your ISP to the Main Deco.
I have gigabit service (this system can support up to 2.5 Gbps). To test the new mesh setup, I ran a speed test (speedtest.net) on my previous mesh system from several areas in my house. I then reran the tests once the Deco was up and running. On average, I saw at least a 50% increase in wifi speeds in my tests. In the main areas of the house (office, living room, etc.), I saw wifi speeds closer to 75% improvement. Color me impressed!!
In the end, the claim of 7000 sf coverage may be accurate (it at least covers 3500 sf without breaking a sweat). No need for additional units to get coverage in every corner of the house.
For the price point, features, and wifi speeds, the Deco AX4300 is a great mesh network solution for your home!

Ecobee Does It Again!
on June 14, 2022
Posted by: bobcats9498
If you need/want a smart thermostat, look no further. The Ecobee Premium Thermostat is the best smart thermostat on the market.
Setup is relatively easy. Download the Ecobee app (there is no installation guide) and it walks you through the process. Be sure to cut power to your thermostat before you start the install! Everything you need comes in the box (wire labels, screws, etc.). Make sure you take your time and check and double check your wire connections before turning the power back on. This latest version of the Ecobee thermostat is absolutely beautiful with its stainless steel and all glass front.
Once you have the Ecobee installed, the fun really starts. Using the remote sensor, you can create comfort settings (Home, Sleep, etc.) to keep your house at the perfect temperature. I put the remote sensor in my bedroom so at night I can have the thermostat run to keep my bedroom at the perfect sleeping temp (ignoring the temperature at the base unit). The remote sensors are what truly set Ecobee apart from other smart thermostats.
Ecobee keeps you posted on your AC runtimes and lets you know how much you save. You can also easily set vacations in the app and use the remote sensor and base station to know when your house is empty (automatically adjusting the temperature).
Overall, Ecobee is the one to beat in the smart thermostat market.

Great Scooter with Some Limitations
on January 30, 2022
Posted by: bobcats9498
from Texas
The Hover 1 Highlander scooter is a great way to get around. Setup is very quick out of the box. Screw in the handles, charge fully, and have fun. Charging to full capacity takes a few hours and the charger has an easy to read light to let you know when the scooter is fully charged.
Riding the scooter is very simple. There are three modes (eco, regular, and sport). Each mode tops out your max speed which has an impact on the distance you can travel before the battery drains. In sport mode, at 15 MPH, you move at a good clip.
I question the weight load of the scooter, listed at 264 pounds max weight, as I don't see how the scooter's motor would be all to drive at that limit. I am 45 pounds lighter than the max and the scooter struggles at the slightest hill. On flat pavement, the scooter easily reaches the max speed on each setting. Don't expect to move up a hill very fast, or at all depending on your weight, but that is to be somewhat expected.
The scooter folds down for easy carrying, though could be considered a little heavy for some.
Overall, the Hove 1 Highlander scooter is a great way to zip around, whether for a short commute or just for fun.

Great Facial Cleanser but No Battery Charge/Change
on January 30, 2022
Posted by: bobcats9498
I was a little skeptical to use the Foreo Luna Play Plus 2 as it seems geared towards women, I am male, but after a week of using it twice a day to clean my face and neck, I am impressed. The silicon fingers do a great job of gently scrubbing your face and neck removing any grease and grim. My face feels a little softer after using even for a short time.
Using the Luna PP2 is easy; wet your face, add facial soap to your face or directly on the device, turn on the power and gently scrub your face.
The only complaint/concern I have with the Luna Play Plus 2 is that there is no rechargeable battery or a way to replace the batteries. Once the battery dies, you have to throw away the device. Not good for your pocketbook or the environment. Foreo claims you can get 600 uses from the device so at about twice a day use, you will get just short of a year before you have to toss it in the trash. I would recommend getting a similar device with the ability to recharge for laster longevity.
Overall, the Foreo Luna Play Plus 2 is a great facial cleansing device, even for men. Just be prepared to have to buy another one 600 uses later.

Awesome Compact 40W (2x20W) Charger
on December 2, 2021
Posted by: bobcats9498
from Austin, TX
The Anger Powerport III Nano Pro Duo charger is as functional as it is stylish. The very compact design allows the charger to not take up much space when plugged in. And for its small size, you can fast charge two devices up to 20 Watts each or 1 device at 40 Watts. The charger is compact enough for travel and will hold up well due to its solid design. Anker products last a long while so the charger will be useful for years to come. This charger has replaced my existing two chargers I carried around to charge my phone and tablet.

The APC Back-UPS 450VA battery back-up and surge protector is a must have to stay connected when the power goes out. With more people working from home, it is important that your Internet connection stay on when power fails. This UPS has you covered.
Plug in your modem and router and get up to 2.3 hours of battery time keeping you online and working.
The UPS is relatively small and has 6 plugs (4 battery back-up and 2 just surge protectors).
Overall, a must have in the connected world we live and work in.

Great Lightweight Sheet
on October 17, 2021
Posted by: bobcats9498
from Austin, TX
The Bedgear Dri-Tec Moisture-Wicking sheet set is a great addition to your sleeping routine. The material is very lightweight which allows for you to sleep comfortably all night long. The fitted sheet has great straps that help it stay in place even if you toss and turn a lot. Even the pillow cases have straps that keep your pillow from sliding out.
The sheets are easy to clean (recommended cold water and warm dryer - not hot).
The only negative to the sheets is they are easy to snag. Be careful if you have pets in your bed as they will easily snag the sheets. Other than that, these are wonderful silky sheets that help you get a great night’s rest.

Awesome Multi-Device Wireless Keyboard
on October 7, 2021
Posted by: bobcats9498
from Austin, TX
The Logitech MX Keys Mini Wireless Bluetooth Scissor Keyboard is an excellent multi-device keyboard. Setup is very quick and switching between up to 3 devices is a breeze.
The keyboard, although mini, is a great size for every day typing. I use the keyboard as my primary work device and it works well, and quietly, all day long.
Battery life is great as it takes several weeks for the battery to run low (I leave it turned on 24/7). The keyboard quickly charges via USB C when needed.
Overall, this is an excellent multi-device keyboard that can easily serve as your daily driver.

Almost the Perfect Robot Vacuum
on September 12, 2021
Posted by: bobcats9498
from Austin, TX
I’ve had a number of robot vacuums and I just assumed this one would be the same - it would roam endlessly around the house, get stuck on the smallest obstacles, and constantly get plugged up with hair and debris. I am glad that I was wrong. This robot vacuum is the best I’ve seen.
Setup is straight forward, using the app, the Shark maps your house allowing you to setup rooms, high-traffic areas, and no-go zones. Be sure to pick up everything you can on the floor to get the best map.
After that, set a schedule to clean or use the app to clean certain zones, rooms, or spot clean specific areas. The Shark is great at going to the area you specifying and the cleaning pattern makes sense (back and forth instead of zig zagging everywhere).
The robot cleans really well and is quieter than other robot vacuums I’ve used. And the ability to have the base station vacuum the vacuum is awesome. No more daily emptying of the collection bin.
There are just a few issues/wishes I have found with this vacuum:
* When spot cleaning, if you try to adjust the spot cleaning area in the app, it doesn’t work. The spot doesn’t change. You have to send the vacuum back to the base and start again to change the spot clean location.
* I wish you could specify certain rooms or zones to clean when setting up a schedule. Right now, it just cleans the whole house and only one schedule allowed per day.
Hopefully these abilities will be added to the app eventually.
Overall, I highly recommend this robot vacuum. It does the best job cleaning and has the most customizations and abilities.

Limited Features Not Worth the Cost
By bobcats9498
I had high hopes of the Velop mesh wifi system after reading about it from CES reviews. However, that excitement quickly faded as I started to setup and use the system.
I setup the first Velop node (connected to my modem) with no issues. Setup through the app was easy. The troubles came when I started to setup the second node. I have ethernet cable running around the house so had planned on using the nodes connected via ethernet to improve connectivity and throughput. Everything I read indicated that this feature was possible. The second node was being installed about 30 feet away from the primary node (two walls separating them).
I plugged the second node into my ethernet cable and started setup via the app. The app hung on the testing mesh connectivity screen. I called Linksys to get help (I quickly connected to an agent which I really appreciate). After explaining what was going on, she indicated that the system should NOT be connected via ethernet cables as it was not designed to do that. That’s opposite of everything I read. So I disconnected the ethernet cable and tried setup again (this time connecting second note wirelessly to primary). Still could not setup. The agent advised moving the node closer to the primary and trying again. I did this with success and then moved the node back to the original location. I was shocked that I couldn’t setup a second node only 30 feet and two walls away from the primary. The picture in the app while setting up the node shows the second node on a completely separate floor across the house. Not my experience at all.
I setup the third node (by placing it next to the primary and then moving it) and it went fine having learned from the troubles of the second node setup.
After having the system setup and using it, here were my observations:
Pros:
* The Velop system looks great - don’t have to hide nodes
* Setup of the primary node easy using the app
* Throughput is solid - not as high as my existing mesh system (Google) likely due to not being able to connect via ethernet
* Wifi covered entire house easily (4500 SqFt)
* App is easy to use (for average user, see cons below)
* Quick connection time with customer service agent
Cons:
* Setting up additional nodes can be finicky. Must be VERY close to primary node
* Does not support connecting nodes via ethernet likely resulting in reduced wifi throughput
* The app, while great for basic functionality, allows very limited advanced capabilities. You have to use the Linksys app to access the router so there are very few advanced abilities (like you would get if you accessed router via web browser).
* You cannot reserve a custom DHCP address for a device. You can reserve the address assigned to the device currently, but not specify what address you want reserved.
* You can’t change the ip range assigned to devices
* You can’t see what Velop node a device is connected to. You have to “trust” that it is connected to the best node.
Overall, the Velop mesh system is a good choice for many customers. However, given the limited advanced features and high price tag (hundreds more than other similar systems), I have to recommend that customers look at other mesh network options. Sadly, the Velop system doesn’t outshine it’s competitors enough to justify the higher cost.
Hopefully with some much needed firmware and app updates, the product will live up to its price.

Linksys Comment Contridictory to Article Reference
January 17, 2017
In their reply to my review, Linksys states that the nodes can be hard wired once setup wirelessly. They also mention "Having said that, we would still recommend using Velop to Velop wireless connectivity to achieve optimum network speed." They link to an article about setting up the nodes with Ethernet. When I read the article, it says, "The Linksys Velop can be connected together wired via Ethernet. If your home is already wired with Ethernet, you may want to take advantage of these connections to increase the range of your Velop system, maximize the speed, and reduce the risk of wireless interference."
So they say keep it wireless and the article says to keep it wired for improved speeds. Which is it?

How often does the filter need to be replaced and how much does it cost?

HOW LOUD IS IT?

Crazy loud on the highest setting. It truly sounds like a jet engine taking off. On the auto setting, or level 1 on manual, it is relatively quiet. But as soon as you turn it up or it detects pollutants, it will drown out a room.

Is there anyway to use these earbuds on an airplane for the movies

No way to use on airplanes. The only option is to maybe purchase a bluetooth adaptor for airplanes and pair the headphones to the adaptor.
